7 YEARS & I Have a Good Feeling About This

We had a great crew for our challenge run (aka trails with a lot of climbing the day after a speed workout).  This challenge run was shorter than previous weeks because we are pretty much all racing on Saturday but we got in 7 miles for the day with a lot of rollers in there.  If you are looking for a group to run with then check with your local running store because Runner’s Corner (our running store) is how this group has been formed!

We got in a bit of altitude training on our run ha;). We were up another 1,000 feet from where we usually train.

This might just be me (let’s be honest it probably is because I’ve seen Lion King way too many times) but every time I see a scene like this I hear Mufasa’s voice in my head saying ‘everything the light touches is our kingdom.’

IMG 2868

Random thought to go with this picture but let’s talk about rings—> In the morning my wedding ring has been hurting because my fingers are swollen a bit when I wake up. Anyone have one of those silicone type rings that you wear while running?  Do you like it?  What brand?

IMG 2904 2

We are at about 50% of our normal weekly mileage at this point of the week and I’m also going to take Friday off.   My legs are feeling much more fresh than normal right now so I have very good feelings about how this race on Saturday is going to go.   This course has a lot more rolling hills throughout the 13.1 miles but I’m going to focus on keeping my effort level the same on the ups and the downs so I don’t blow up on some of the hills.

Can you guess what my favorite color is lately?

We picked up Knox from his mom and got a few things done.

And lastly if you make a burger at home please try it on an asiago or cheddar bagel and then let me know afterwards how much you loved it.

HOW ARE WE BACK TO BACKPACKS and routines?!

IMG 2996

I shared yesterday that I’m a crier and here is one of those things I’m crying (a lot) about—>  Happy tears/good memory tears/time needs to slow down tears.

The day Brooke was born my entire life changed for the better.  I can’t believe how fast these 7 years have gone by and how incredibly lucky I am to be Brooke’s mom.  Andrew has the day off from work and Knox will be with us today too so the whole family will be together to celebrate Brooke’s bday and I cannot wait.

Do you wear jewelry while you run?

Those of you that run with a group—> how did you meet them?

Anyone reading that was a reader back when Brooke was born?  Remember how I got off the airplane, didn’t have anywhere to live and then went into labor?

Feel free to wish Brooke happy birthday… I’ll have her read them with me today!

Happy birthday Brooke!! I hope you have such a fun day with all you birthday wishes coming true.

My husband wears Enzo and likes them. He did have one tear on him but they replaced it.

I was a hit or miss reader then but I do remember that one!

I don’t wear my rings to work out or to sleep! I have a small plate to put them in, why not try that? If I go anywhere else without them I feel weird but working out, I never mind it!!

Happy Birthday Brooke! Enjoy age 7 and 2nd grade. 2nd grade was my little girls favorite grade. Eat a donut for us!!

Happy Birthday Brooke. I have known you since you were growing in your mom’s belly and she was out running fast miles. You and your mom paved the way for me of just what a mother/daughter relationship could be, and no lie, both of you crossed my mind when I found out I had a girl. Ok, getting a little heavy for a 7 year old. Happy Birthday…….hope it is sparkly, rainbows, with a touch of sugar.

I wear a silicone ring every day (I work at a gym). I’ve had a qualo one and now wear Lucky brand. They are cheap and it doesn’t matter if my fingers swell or my hands are cold it stays put without feeling tight or like its going to slip off.

Reply

I have Raynaud’s Syndrome (circulation thing in my fingers), so I stopped wearing my wedding ring a while ago. I mostly only wear a silicone ring because it’s comfortable when my fingers swell and shrink. I just bought the cheap ones on Amazon. And they come in fun colors :) My current one is teal – matches your polish and watch (and shorts, and shoes…..) :)

Reply

Well now I need the same one you have… thank you for sharing:) . A few of my running friends have Raynaud’s Syndrome too. I hope you are doing well and have a beautiful day!

MMMM…cheesy bagels! Have you tried the Heinz mayochup? I wonder how that compares with authentic Utah fry sauce?
I don’t wear much jewelry at all anymore. When I ran with my rings on, the sweat used to irritate my skin under my engagement ring. I’ve seen people at the gym wearing the silicone bands–usually Qalo–but I recently heard that Groove bands stretch less: https://groovelife.com/collections/silicone-wedding-rings-bands
My county has a very dynamic Road Runners club, and the Road Runners Club of America can connect people with similar ones near them: https://www.rrca.org/find-a-running-club
I was on pins and needles when you flew so close to your due date, then while you were getting your last prego running steps
in on the way across the hospital parking lot :) And your brand-new neighbors were so welcoming and supportive. I also can’t believe it’s been 7 years!!!

Brooke, I hope you have a fabulous birthday, having tons of fun, surrounded by people who love you <3

Corey, I can’t thank you enough for being my friend over the years and you just brought me some really fun memories. Thank you for that.. I forgot about the parking lot run:)
I love the look of those Groove bands… THANK YOU! And thanks for sharing the link to the RRCA running clubs, I love it. I will try Heinz mayochup as soon as I see it… sounds like the same ingredients haha!

Thanks Janae! What size does she have? Love Zara but it’s been so long since I’ve ordered not sure if they are true to size or not!

For Brooke it has been true to size. I ordered everything this time 7 and it all fits her except for one jacket is a little tighter than I thought it would be. So it’s pretty true to size if not a little tiny bit small!

Happy birthday Brooke! I’ve loved watching you grow up on your mom’s blog – I hope you have a great day!

Hi Janae! I have the silicone ring below and really love it for running/swimming/exercise. The Enso brand has lots of different colors and shapes/sizes. Happy Birthday sweet Brookie! I hope your day is filled with Panda Express and sprinkles;)

I use the Enso ring, I love it because people have told me it looks a lot less like the silicone rings and more like a real ring. it’s the “rose gold” color and has a nice shimmer https://ensorings.com/products/thin-elements-silicone-ring?ensoColor=Rose%20Gold

Funny story about the silicone ring is that my fiancé proposed and I wasn’t used to wearing jewelry, and so first day of CrossFit I wore my new engagement ring that he had spent months designing and I thought…people wear their rings to CrossFit right? Wrong. Like no one there has a ring on and I’m doing slam balls with a 30 lb medicine ball and hitting my ring on everything and my new fiancé was mortified;) So he casually bought me a silicone ring and was like this is for CrossFit…. ;) I learned :)

I run with a group that I met through my local running store, too! The running store did couch to 5k type classes and a bunch of us went through consecutive classes and then eventually had the hang of running and just decided to meet together! So now we meet Mon & Weds and then Saturday mornings and then every Saturday morning we all have breakfast together post run :)

I need to try the asiago bagel burger, ASAP.

Have a great day!

Happy Birthday Brooke!! I hope you have an AMAZING day! :)

I love running with a group- I met most of my running friends through a track group our local running store hosts.

Happy Birthday Brooke! Wishing you the best day you can have!

I have a Qalo ring for working out and swimming. It’s very comfortable and the pop of color just sort of makes me happy.

I met my running group through a local pub run. Then a few of us decided to train for a marathon together and we still run most weeks. I used to think I was too slow to run with a group because I worried I would hold everyone back but it’s made my running so much better. And the miles go by a lot quicker when we’re all chatting.

I was definitely a reader back then and could not believe you were a chill enough person to handle moving, then immediately having a baby, then having to sleep on an air mattress when you returned from the hospital. I would have lost my mind. It was clear from those early days (and every post since) how much you absolutely love your little Brooke, and that you would do anything for her. You are such a great mom, Janae!
… and yes, time needs to slow down!

Reply

I forgot about the air mattress hahaha… I definitely think I’ve gotten less chill over the years with stuff like that haha (poor Andrew;). Thanks Stacey and it sure is fun to be in the same boat with Skye and your little man the last 1.5ish years. I hope you are having a beautiful day!

Happy Birthday Brooke! I hope your day (and your year) is filled with lots of fun and sprinkles!
No jewelry for me when I work out – only my watch.
I run with CARA – Chicago Area Runners Association for marathon training. This is my third summer training with my group – I don’t know how I trained without them for my first marathon. The long runs are so much better with friends than solo. I never thought running with a group would make such a positive difference in how I feel about running. I’m in a slower pace group and we are all about enjoying ourselves along the way. There is a hill at the end of our long run route, and I love how my group-mates cheer each other up the hill.

Reply

Cathy, it just made me SO happy to hear about your running group and I totally relate… it’s life changing to run with such amazing people. The cheering= the best. I hope you have the best day and thanks for the birthday wishes!

Happy Birthday, Brooke! Seven is a great year!

I was a reader before Brooke was born, but then fell off when Google Reader went away because I just couldn’t remember to check everyday. I’ve been back now since just after you moved back to Utah (I think). Yours is pretty much the only blog I check in with everyday.

No jewelry for me while I work out. I’ve thought about trying a silicon ring, so I’ll be looking at some of the recommendations others have given.

Happy Birthday Brooke! I hope you have an amazing day! And I do remember the post about you getting off the airplane and going into labor. Didn’t you do a little “run” in the parking lot of the hospital on your way in to say you ran? Crazy that was 7 years ago.

I am curious about the silicone wedding band also. I don’t usually run wearing my wedding ring because I find myself messing with it while running. But I also feel naked without it.

Reply

I SURE DID… oh you are the absolute best. Thanks for remembering:) . I TOTALLY relate to feeling naked without it… so crazy! I’ll let you know which one I get:) . Have the best day!

I am definitely a crier! This last month + has had a lot of crying, between the passing of my dad and dropping my oldest son off at college… I have shed many years, good and bad! But I always feel crying can be very cleansing.
I am thinking I would like to try running with a group. I think it may be helpful for me. I have always just run by myself or with my husband, so a group might be a good change.
Have a great day celebrating Brooke ❤️

Happy birthday Brooke!

My husband and I both take our rings off for running. We have antique rings, so they’re a bit more fragile than normal and I’d rather not have to worry about damaging or losing it. We keep ring dishes all around the house (bed side table, bathroom, kitchen) so that we always have somewhere safe to leave them.

Reply

My hands swell when I run so I don’t wear my nice rings. My husband and I both wear Enso rings and love them. They’re comfy and durable. I wear mine when running, working out, or doing anything I don’t want to dirty or damage my nice rings.

P.s. Happy Birthday to Brooke! I began reading your blog shortly after Brooke was born and right before you moved away from California. My life experiences were very similar to yours during this time (minus Brooke) and I’ve loved keeping up with you all these years and see you find true happiness with Andrew and your three little kiddos!

I never wear my rings working out, walking/hiking, in bed, or anytime really when its very warm. My hands swell too much.

I run in a silicone band and love it, I can’t even feel it whereas my wedding band feels like a tourniquet if I wear it. I think it’s an Enzo brand ring.

Happy birthday to Brooke!

Happy birthday to Brooke! I can’t believe she’s 7! I started reading when she was 3 ;)

My husband and I have silicone rings for exercise (and when we travel on vacation). We have the Qalo brand and love them. I have worn them swimming, running, biking, etc. It stays put as long as you get a good fitting one. Qalo recommends half size up from your normal ring size, and I found that perfect for me. I have a friend who got hers from Amazon, though, and they are just as good as any more expensive brand. My Qalo was about $25, but that’s because we wanted matching ones in DC United soccer team colors haha.

Have a great day with the kiddos!

Reply

I love pyrkia rings, I have several different colors and widths. It is the only jewelry I wear when I workout (including their bracelets). The material that they use is so thin.

Happy Birthday Brooke!! Have a wonderful day celebrating!

Reply

Happy Birthday, Brooke! I hope that you have a great day!

I’ve tried a couple different brands, and found Qalo to be the best for my preference with silicone rings. My fingers get really swollen in the morning and working out too. Also, a couple of years back I bent my ring because I didn’t take it off when I was weight lifting. Oops.

I would LOVE to run with a group but I am super slow (I know a lot of people have that worry…). Maybe some day!

Reply

This may be unpopular opinion, but I don’t wear my wedding rings when I work out (or when I sleep actually). I just don’t see why it matters to go out for an hour or two without them. Plus, I’m hoping that the lack of sweat and exposure will protect the integrity of the rings so they last longer in good condition :)

Reply

Oh I don’t think there is anything wrong with that! I’m just the type of person that probably takes a bit too long to shower etc after a workout which would mean I probably wouldn’t be wearing a ring the majority of the day. Oh I totally think you are right about helping them stay in good condition that way! Have a great day!

Reply

Happy birthday Brooke! I have a silicone ring by Enso and I love it for running and lots of other things like gardening, water sports etc. I had our anniversary date engraved on it too so I like that as well. I got an Enso ring a year or two ago because I didn’t like to run or work out with my wedding ring – the stones we used were from jewelry worn by our grandparents and are irreplaceable – but I still like to have a ring, especially at the gym. Mine is the kind that looks like actual metal (I have the rose gold one, but in hindsight I would have preferred silver), and it’s so comfortable! It also has little grooves on the inside that help it breathe. Highly recommended!

Reply

Hi Noelle, just curious why you think you would have preferred silver over the rose gold? Just personal preference or what? I’ve been looking at all the suggestions here and think I like the Enso rings the best. I just recently got engaged :) thanks!

I bought a super cheap ($20), SUPER thin wedding band of etsy, half a size bigger than my normal wedding ring, and that’s what I work out it in – and I don’t sleep in my rings. I actually take them off the second I get home because as much as I can’t stand being without my rings in public, I can’t stand wearing them once I get home! I also completely change at home into my “home clothes,” aka grubbies.

I bought some of those silicone bands from Amazon a couple of years ago and they are great for running! I can’t get my wedding rings on/off after any type of workout (South Carolina is wonderful for finger swelling in the summer), so these things are lifesavers. I can’t remember the brand, but they came in a multi color pack of 6 and were less than $10.

Happy Birthday Brooke!!

Gosh you blink and time just flys by!
I have a qualo ring that is the color you are obsessing over right now! It even glows in the dark. I wear it during the week when I’m teaching classes at the gym and wear my other rings on the weekends.

Reply

Happy Birthday Brooke!!!

Re: The ring – So I’ve never used a silicone ring, but I do use a Bandit – it’s a cute little elastic-y bracelet that has a hidden zipper, and I put my (very new!!) engagement ring in that while running or lifting. It scares the heck outta me to leave it at home for some reason, so I really like having a way to keep the valuable jewelry on my body but safe. The little Bandit also will fit a house key, a little bit of money, etc. so it’s really useful!

Reply

Happy birthday, Brooke!! I hope your day is filled with all kinds of fun!

I definitely remember when Brooke was born. I’d only been reading your blog for about a month or so. Janae, you’ve done a wonderful job raising your sweet girl.

The only jewelry I wear running is my new Suunto 9 which I am currently loving. I added some bling in the form of Road ID (https://www.roadid.com/) something I’ve needed to do for a long time.

Reply

I take my ring off anytime I exercise

Reply

Happy Birthday Brookers! Gosh I remember reading your blog for the first time right after she turned 1!

I have 2 enso rings (love stacking them) and have loved them. They only do whole sizes, and I’d recommend if your ring is sized in between (like a 5.5) to size down, they do stretch out. If you do order the wrong size, they are super quick with exchanges. I love that you can get simple designs or colorful/trendy ones and they are inexpensive to switch out.

My husband has a qualo ring and likes it as well. He bought is in a small boutique on a vacation though so I can’t speak to their customer service.

Happy birthday Brooke! It’s been a pleasure watching you grow up online. Your mom has done an amazing job raising you into a fine young lady. You should be very proud. Thank you for sharing your life with your readers. Enjoy all the sprinkles on your birthday.

Happy Birthday, Brooke!! I still remember reading you mom’s pregnancy announcement and how adorable it was. You should ask her to see it if you haven’t already :) I cannot believe you are SEVEN already!! Hope your day is filled with love, fun and ice cream!

I wear an enso ring every time I run or workout. My fingers get so puffy! Plus my jeweler said to not wear my rings when I workout or do lawn work so I keep them safe in a little pouch or on my dresser. I used to just not wear them but I found myself always panicking that I lost them when I felt them not on my finger so I got a silicone one. Works great! I’d definitely recommend them!

Reply

Oh I need to show her that! I totally forgot about that… I was so beyond excited to post that haha. I panic too without something on my finger thinking I lost it! Awesome, thanks so much Amanda and thanks for being my internet friend for so long!

Qalo rings for the win! I hardly EVER wear my “real” wedding ring as I have about 4 of these rings and they are so comfy. I just bought one in a beautiful teal color too! They are cheap and they last – have never had one tear on me and I am at the gym (using a barbell, kettlebell, dumbbell, pullup rig, etc. 5-6 times a week) https://qalo.com/

Enso rings are great for running/working out! I have a few thin ones I stack together and think they look great – check them out!

I only discovered your mom’s blog recently, so I don’t remember reading about your birth, but I would love to read the story (you should add the link to your post, Janae). I hope you have a wonderful day, and know that you are a precious gift from God to your family. And enjoy second grade! My little sister is going into second grade, too, we have quite a few years between us, LOL. She idolizes me I think and I think she’s pretty awesome too!

PS Janae, when will you be doing another friend to friend post?

I can’t believe Brooke is 7! I remember when you announced you were pregnant, then remember how crazy I thought you were for running (albeit briefly) pre-birth! It’s been such a treat to watch her and your family grow. Happy birthday, Brooke!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! So exciting!

I recently started wearing an Enso ring for the same reason and love it! You forget you’re wearing it! They are very affordable and come in lots of colours. I have the “unicorn” one and it’s iridescent.

My husband and I joined a learn to run 6 years ago and made some great running friends who we still run with today!

Happy happy birthday Brooke!! My oldest turns 7 on Saturday-so crazy how fast it goes, but isn’t this just the best age?! I had two Enso rings but lost them both swimming after they seemed to get stretched out. I have had a groove ring the last 6 months and REALLY like it!

I have a Qalo ring and HIGHLY recommend it! I love wearing it instead of my band not just because of swelling, but because I didn’t want the build up of sweat/bugspray/sunscreen to get in between the stones. And I worried if I fell I would damage it. Best $20 ever spent!

My husband and I both have enso silicone rings. They’re super affordable, and I got a few colors to switch out with what I’m wearing because I’m cool like that. We’ve worn them snorkeling, swimming, hiking, camping, running, racing, doing house projects, etc. They have different styles, are so lightweight, and you barely notice you’re wearing them. We love them!

My husband and I both wear Pyrkia rings for workouts and LOVE them! They’re super light and you barely notice them!

My husband and I have Enso rings and love them! I wear a larger band and a thinner one (a stackable ring) with more intricate design to mirror my two traditional rings. I can keep them on even when I run (my hands swell a lot when I run).
