Tuesday Tangents & My Proud Moment.

I have a NEW SKYE UPDATE HERE!!  She is officially 1.5 years old now.  I have a lot of random things/pictures to share with you.

———————————————————————————-

Emilee and I were able to get in a run together again!  It had been 8 days since our last run together which was way too long.  PS having an awesome running partner just five doors away is spoiling me big time.

IMG 8015

My legs were pretty sore from the previous week of running and the amusement park life but it felt good to be running around my area again.

We’ve got speed tomorrow!  With my new coach we don’t usually find out the workout until the afternoon/evening before we meet so it’s always exciting to get the text about what we are doing on Tuesday’s.  With previous coaches I would get my week of workouts on Sunday so this is a change for me.

IMG 8016

We picked up Beretta from the dog hotel.

IMG 8035

We also went to Costco to fill our kitchen up with the good stuff now that we are home.  Skye was bored because they didn’t have samples.

PS I am all about a written list when I go grocery shopping, lists on my phone drive me crazy.  I love to cross things out.

IMG 8030

We also went to Dr. Bennet’s office to get everything adjusted and in place to keep on training.  He has kept me injury free since the fall of 2014 (besides turf toe from coming off a curb weird on a run once).

He has one of the cutest dogs on the planet, her name is Fiona.

IMG 8023

The rest of our day was at home.  We had Turkey Trot Meatballs and roasted sweet potatoes for dinner (both recipes from here).

I’m full of tangents to share today:

*Bloglovin’ is back working again!  Who knows why it stopped sharing my posts but it is back now.  Thank you for letting me know that my posts weren’t going out.

*Wish my sister luck… they are remodeling their kitchen all by themselves.  You can see her kitchen remodel before and after HERE from her last house and her gym remodel HERE.  They are amazing.

*To answer yesterday’s debate question about Waze vs Google Maps—> I am 100% a Waze user and Andrew swears by Google Maps.  Both of us refuse to even try the other person’s favorite.  Waze has gotten me to where I need to go every single time and fills me in on the best route, accidents and hazards.  This is one argument of ours where we both refuse to compromise;)

*I saw a raccoon out on my run last week in California… Andrew told me when I got back to the hotel that raccoons must be my spirit animal since I see them so often.

*I have definitely gotten ice cream in my hair while eating it too.

IMG 7629

*My friend put this on her IG and I had never seen this quote before.  SO MUCH YES and I really believe this is true.

Screen Shot 2019 06 09 at 3 17 53 PM

*I had a weird flashback while we were at Disneyland to a time that I went there tenish years ago in this same restaurant.  I was so stressed about what in the world I was going to eat at Disney all day.  I remember being stressed about the entire trip because of that reason.  I didn’t have my ‘safe foods’ with me and I didn’t have my normal control over every bite that I took.  I had a proud moment sitting there last week thinking about the fact that those thoughts haven’t crossed my mind for years.  I’m very grateful that food now is part of the fun experience/memories from my trips/life rather than taking away from those memories.  I hope that you vacation (and live your life:) this summer free of guilt and eat the things that make your mind and body happy:).  If this isn’t the case for you right now then there is NO BETTER TIME than now to work with a professional to get through this problem.

IMG 7790

*A movie about running is coming out soon…. Let’s all get together and watch it at the same theater.

*We made this honey butter yesterday and put it on toasted Dave’s Killer Bread.  It might be one of the best snacks ever invented.

Who is running Grandmas Marathon?  I want to cheer for you!

-I was planning on running it this year but then the ultra/boston came up.  Maybe next year or the next year?!  I’ve heard it is amazing.

Grocery list—> Written out or on your phone?

At what age did you start swim lessons with your kids?

When do you know what runs/workouts you will be doing for the week? Right before?  The weekend before?  The month before?

Written! I 100% agree, must cross things off. I have different colored pens too haha. :)
Um, Skye covered in ice cream is adorable. My son ends up the same way. I love it when he gets an ice cream beard.
I just watched the trailer to that movie a couple days ago and it looks so good!! We need more movies that involve running. :)

I need to get some different colored pens for my lists too! Hahah watching kids eat ice cream is just the best. Have a wonderful day Mollie!

Grocery list written out unless it’s just a couple items – then it’s on my phone.
And yes, I think it would be fun to try to see Brittany Runs a Marathon as a Utah group! It looks so good!

Let’s do it! Have a great day Laura!

Can’t wait to see this movie, gets great reviews! It will be on Amazon on Aug 23rd, so not at the theater. I always keep a small pad of paper with a magnet on my frig. and add things to my list all weeek as I run out. Then rip it off to go to the store!

Reply

I need to get one of those lists for my fridge! I guess we all just need to come over to my house and watch it on prime. I can’t wait! Have a beautiful day Sara!

Quick question: is Dr. B a PT or chiropractor or something else?

Reply

Hey! He is a chiropractor! My favorite is the muscle reactivation that he does. I hope you have a wonderful day Carly!

I’m an iphone list person. i still keep a paper calendar and planner, but for some reason i like the ease of having the list with me at all times so i can add to it whenever something pops into my brain.

We started my daughter in swim lessons at about 18 months. i felt like it was the perfect age. she loves being in the water, and was actually old enough to understand the climbing out and some of the other skills they taught in class. water safety is SUPER DUPER important!!

Reply

This is exactly what I was looking for… signing up skye now for lessons. The pools terrify me! Thanks for sharing Jessica! And great point on the phone list. I hope you are having a great morning!

Reply

Grocery list written for sure (phone in a pinch). I don’t bring a pen to cross them out though, rather I fold the list so that the things I have gotten are no longer showing. Yes, it gets complicated, as the list is written in order of the items we deplete at home, and sometimes I have five different folds in the paper, but that is part of the fun :)

We started taking our son in the pool when he was six weeks and by the time he was three he just swam off. For the last three years we have been playing with him in the pool while encouraging him to swim under and on top of the water, and last week he passed the swim test at the Y! I think this winter I might sign him up for formal lessons for stroke development (he’ll be 7 then).

If I am training for something I know up to 12 weeks before what my training plan will be. If I am not, I just try to run when I can, distance determined by time available.

Reply

CONGRATS to your son, that is awesome! Good idea to fold the list… I’ll try that when I forget my pen (which always happens). I hope your Tuesday is a great one Tonya!

I wish I could talk to you more about overcoming your eating issues. I’ve dieted my whole adult life and fall into the trap of thinking how much faster I’d be if I weighed a certain number. Food is a source of unhappiness for me. I am striving to be like you and eat what makes me happy in moderation!

I’m running grandmas marathon!! I couldn’t make the trip last year so I’m really excited this time.

Reply

GOOD LUCK AMBER AT GRANDMAS and please let me know how it goes. Have you worked with any therapists? I wish I could pull you out of this because you deserve to enjoy food. PS I am a million times faster now that I am 30 lbs heavier than I used to be. Our bodies need energy. I have three assignments for you…. go follow @happilyfed , @beautyredifined and read this article: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/08/opinion/sunday/women-dieting-wellness.html
“Intuitive eating has been around for decades, but it’s suddenly receiving a lot of attention. Perhaps it’s because women are finally starting to interrogate the systems that hurt and exploit us. Perhaps it’s because we’re driven and ambitious and we need energy- not lightheaded, leafy-greens energy but real energy, the kind that comes from eating the hearty foods men eat.” We are smart, strong women with so much potential and we need the energy from hearty food to accomplish the things we want to do. Don’t give the diet industry one more day of your life, we deserve to take up space in this world and not feel like we need to disappear and take up less and less space. I am here if you ever need to email. Praying for you!

Reply

Thank you for your kind words Janae! I’m excited to check out the info you gave. It seems so hard to break out of the diet cycle once we’re in it, but you did it and I can too. :)

Paper lists and calendars all the way! I still put stuff in my phone but I hate carrying and relying on it when you’re dealing with kids and a shopping cart. I’ve broken my screen what too many times!

Reply

Maybe that is why I love the paper list so much too… Who cares if you drop the paper ha. I hope your day is a great one Angie!

Oooh I’m excited to see that movie!!!

My coach ->> @sugarruns is running Grandma’s Marathon and going for the sub 3 goal!! Lots of cheers for her!!

My coach also gives me the runs a week before. I think it would be nice not to overthink the workout a few days in advance, as long as I knew that certain day would be speed so I could get my body ready for that:)

I love what you said about your Disney memory. It’s so amazing to see tangible growth like that. Do you still feel like you have triggers/thoughts that you have to combat or do you think you’re completely healed from it? I have been dealing with this for a while and had a bit of regression when I got injured, and am getting back on track now. But one of my friends told me its basically a lifelong thing like that and you’ll never really get away from those thoughts, just learn to better deal with them. So I was curious about your experience with that.

Reply

That is so so exciting! I’ll be cheering for her to get that sub 3 too! Great question and you are doing amazing. I think a few days before my period (when my hormones are nuts) is when I am not happy with myself the most (with everything I am doing in my life… I have a tracker and mark it in my calendar to remind myself that it is just hormones making me feel like a failure) and sometimes different IG accounts will trigger me (in the sense of I eat way too many treats and should cut that out… thank goodness for the unfollow button) but other than that I can honestly say it is in the past. I think I am lucky in the sense where I have so much support. I have a husband that loves me for exactly who I am in the now, my kids love me for who I am right now, I feel so much better when I eat enough, I am able to run better, I am able to have a consistent period, I have time to think about other things than food, I’m getting older and I think that just helps us to worry less about ourselves etc so the pros just outweigh any thoughts of needing to change. I should make a vlog about this because it is such a hard answer to type ha. Keep on fighting that regression, you can do hard things!

Reply

Always, always a written grocery list! That way you can cross off items as you pick them, and you don’t end up forgetting something. Plus, it’s part of my menu planning. As I decide dinner for the week, I write down which ingredients I will need.
My boys were both 3 or 4 when they started swim lessons. The pool we used had a policy that kids had to be completely pottie trained. Both loved swim lessons ?
Good luck with your speed work today! ?

Reply

YES, that is what I am starting to do and I love it. It’s all in one place! I really want to stick to it this time too:) . You are the best, thanks Wendy and I hope you are having a great day!

I’m so excited to be running Grandmas!

Grocery list on my phone, but to-do list is written. I love to cross off things on my to-do list!

Reply

Good luck Tara!!! Will you please please let me know how it goes. You are going to do amazing!

Reply

Your sister must have an endless supply of energy to be able to look after the kids and remodel her house(s)! Can she please share with me!! Is she still training for half or did that happen/did she decide not to race it? I don’t know why that just popped in my head!
Grocery list MUST be on paper! I have even started planning out my lunches and dinners for the week and using symbols to tell me what items go with what meal so I don’t forget anything. Sure doesn’t work a darn bit but I try! Ha! If I have a list in my phone, I forget it’s there!
My oldest started swim lessons when he was around 2. My youngest hasn’t done swim lessons (he’s 5) but he’s modeling after his brother and he’s not a bad little swimmer! I really need to get in lessons.
I’ve only ever had 1 coach and she gave me a month of workouts at a time! It was heavenly and petrifying at the same time! Ha! She knew I’m a stickler for following plans and routine so she knew I needed to be able to plan my life accordingly and I wouldn’t budge from the plan. I’m very very type A that way. If it’s written in down, it’s law!
Have a great day!

Reply

I honestly don’t know how she does it! Her kids will be over here a lot this week while she works on things so it is so nice we live so close to each other. As the mileage got higher, her back felt worse:( . BUT she is obsessed with Burn Bootcamp now and goes daily so she has found her thing. Thanks for thinking about her. I need to try your symbol method:) . Hahah I can see how that would be a win-lose method… nice to have the plan but scary to see the speed you are doing weeks in advance ha. I totally get that… I’ll make it happen if it is written down. Thanks, you too Jenny!

Reply

I am totally a list girl who LOVES to cross it out!! And I use my phone too!
I started swimming lessons for my kids around 2-3 I think… It has been a while .. ha! But the sooner the better in my opinion, and if you can find a great place that integrates safety while teaching to swim that is a winner!
I usually know my running schedule the week before. I actually plan it around the weather. I hate running in the rain, or extreme wind so I take it inside!
I just love that you had that flashback moment to see how far you have come! It is so great when that happens. I also used to stress out when going places about what I would eat and never enjoyed a bday party or picnic! Not anymore though!

Reply

That’s how I feel… the sooner the better for Skye. I am so terrified at the swimming pool and I think water safety just needs to start young. So thankful you are in such a great place too now. It’s so nice that food is part of the celebration, not the enemy! I hope you are having a wonderful day Karen!

I have done my grocery list in Excel for years. I use a filter to only print what I have checked. I printed it out yesterday then left it at home! I was going crazy. I pulled it up on my phone via Dropbox, but still missed some things. I’m going to give “Out of Milk” (http://outofmilk.com) a try for a month and see how it goes. It has both a web based and mobile so I can organize via my desktop then it syncs to my phone. It also moves things out of the way when you cross them off your list at the store. I haven’t tried it at the store, but I’ll give a full report soon!

I’m the youngest of four and I remember sitting on the sidelines when all my siblings were taking swimming lessons. I think I was only 3 when they finally let me join the fun. I love swimming – I think I’m part fish!

I’m not following a training plan right now so I just decide the night before what I’m doing.

Reply

I have never heard of Out of Milk, let me know what you think and I might have to try it too! “Part fish” haha… that is awesome! I hope you have a beautiful rest of your day Kathy!

I literally got an Amazon Alexa b/c nothing ever seemed to make it to my grocery list. I often have messy hands while cooking and need to add something to the list……and would promptly forget when I would be physically able to write it down! So I add things to my Alexa grocery list verbally as the week goes on. Super nice that I can add things to the list as I think of things at work or other random places. Then I transfer those items and any other items I need after meal planning to my grocery store app. It sorts everything by aisle so I can get in and out in a breeze. I have literally been using this app pretty much exclusively for 3 years now. LIFE changing for someone who despises grocery shopping! I don’t always go to the same location and it knows to change the store and therefore the location of the items on my list based on where I am. Boom!
I used to be a list girl for sure until I found these tools!

My son walked into the deep end of my Aunt’s pool at Skye’s age. He had no fear of the water! I enrolled him in the next available spot in a swim class. I believe he was 2? He’s now 9 and can swim really well. No more worries around water!

Can’t wait to hear what your workout will be!

Reply

Oh I am so glad that your son was okay. I am terrified of that happening and with Brooke it wasn’t a worry as much because she clung to me at all times but Skye is out to adventure. I’ve found a place in my area that starts at 18 months so I’m waiting for them to call me back. SO glad he is such a great swimmer now.

We have an Alexa too, I didn’t know that you could do that… such a great idea. I hate grocery shopping too. I will have to try out this app and see if I like it better than writing things down. Thanks so much.

Grocery list – notes on my iPhone, always! Swimming lessons – we did parent + tot swim lessons when she was 1 years old, but I actually found them such a waste of time / money … the instructor was also blah and there was only 1 other kid in the class so that probably didn’t help with the excitement factor. Fast forward to today, and she just passed her first “big girl” swimming class last week (no parent participation) and she is 3 years old 3 months.

Reply

Andrea, your little girl is awesome. Huge congrats to her and to you. Bummer about the experience you guys had. That is frustrating! I hope you have a wonderful day and tell your little one congrats for me:)

Reply

I must watch that movie! It looks so good!

I use Google Keep with a checklist for my grocery shopping :) That way I can check stuff off as I get it and I can move stuff up and down my list based on where things are located in the grocery store.

I had my kiddos in the pool by about a year old just to teach them how to get to the step if they were to fall in, and actual swim lessons by about 3-4. We also have a pool at home, so I hired a college swimmer to come to my house and that was awesome!

I’m kind of in a weird transitional phase with workouts, so I’m by myself cycling right now so my workouts really depend on what time I need to be at work. When I’m running with my group, we get an email on Sunday to give us the weekly workouts and then I plan on when I join them based on what I’m training for and what I have time to do.

Reply

Oh Google Keep sounds awesome Marissa! Such a good idea to have the college swimmers come over. So smart of you to have them learn so much about swimming so early on. That is a hard phase right now and I hope it gets easier to figure out as time goes on!

Reply

That movie looks so good!! I want to see it!! Thanks for sharing!!

Phone list just because I hate carrying extra things like notes and pencils but my husband takes a hand written list to the store!

I started swim lessons with my daughter at 18 months. She’s currently 3.5 and she is an amazing swimmer! I will probably enroll my son even earlier, he’s currently 9 months and I will probably start him in lessons this fall.

Reply

This is what I needed to read… I was wondering if Skye was too young but I really don’t think she is. She is so fearless so I would love to get her started. Thanks for sharing Torrie and I really wish we could all watch this movie together. Have a wonderful day!

I am running Grandma’s!!! It will be my second full marathon. I have been dealing with a foot injury for about 5 or 6 weeks now, which was pretty disheartening. It is healed enough that I will be able to run all 26.2, and I have finally come to peace with the fact that I will be running and not racing. I have a lot of friends that are also running the full or half, some with big goals, and I am excited to have the opportunity to be there and celebrate with them on Saturday.

Reply

AHHH Valerie! I am so excited for you to run Grandmas and I hope your foot feels so much better during the race. Please let me know how it goes! I’ll be thinking about you!

My mom, who is 65 years old, is running Grandma’s Marathon! This will be her 49th marathon. She and I have run it several times before together, but I’m on a break from marathons. For her upcoming 50th marathon she wanted to pick a fun place to travel to, so she is going to do…. the St. George marathon in October! We live in Minnesota and she has never traveled to Utah. I’m so excited for her!

Reply

Congrats to her! That is incredible!! Will you be coming to St. George too? I would love to meet you guys!

My hubby is running Grandma’s! He is shooting for sub 3 to make it a BQ! Wish I was going to cheer him on but I’ll be doing that from home this time :)

Oh my goodness that is so exciting!! Please please please let me know how he does!

I love to write my grocery list out as well. I actually find it way easier carrying around a pen and paper grocery list than my phone! There are some things that are better the old fashioned way. Glad to hear I’m not the only weird one! ;) Wilmington, DE

Reply

Hey – my fitness group (of 7 women) are going to see this movie together !! Going to be a fun “date night” and go eat (of course) afterwards.
I think my daughter started lessons about 5. We put her in them until they well exceeded the last class. She’s a little fish and loves the water, so it was a must that she be a strong swimmer.
I definitely write my grocery list. I don’t like a list on my phone either. I organize it on the paper in the order of the store or sections, to make the stroll through the store go better to.

Reply

I ran Grandmas last year. It. Was. Magical.

Reply

I’m running Grandma’s as my second marathon! I teach a lot of swimming lessons and coach and find that it is worthwhile to start formal lessons at age 4/5. Up until then, lots of time in the water getting comfy submerging with informal instruction from caregivers is beneficial. There are of course parent and tot classes if you’re interested in starting earlier. Swim team is also tons of fun!

I cannot wait for the Brittany Runs a Marathon movie!

I struggle with the thoughts of ” if I was 10 lbs lighter, I could be a faster runner” all of the time, even though I’ve PR’d at Boston this year and again at another marathon a month after that. Why are we so hard on ourselves?

I’m running Grandmas this year! It was my very first full marathon in 2012, and I’ve run it every year since. This year it will be marathon #24. If you do decide to come here to MN to run it sometime, I can definitely give you some course details. :)

WUNDERLIST!!!!
I am a paper list person too – but for groceries and target – my hubs and I use wunderlist. We both downloaded the app and sync it so he can add to the list and I can add to the list which has made shopping SO much easier for us! I have separate lists for separate stores always going – if we run out of something or I remember something randomly, I can add it to my list and since I always have my phone with me (and it doesn’t get lost as easy as a sheet of paper) my list is always updated. The best part is it keeps all your past items stored, so you can scroll down to your past items, see the date you bought them (if you care about that) and re-add them to your list by just clicking on it. Most of my Costco or trader joe runs are re-buying the same items so before we go to the store, we scroll down to see our past items, decide if we need to re-purchase and add them back to the list. Its a sure-fire way to not forget something. Also, you can check the item off your list (for satisfaction purposes) and it will ‘ding’ on your phone as ‘completed’! TRY IT!! You’ll never go back to paper grocery lists again

Reply

Please tell me you use the pop star voice on Waze, too! Google definitely doesn’t have that haha!

We are a family of swimmers ( except for my husband who hates all things exercise, especially if he has to get wet). Get your child in the water as soon as you can and if there is an infant survival class near you go for it and then take advantage of the toddler swim classes and go from there. My girls were both water safe at age 3. They both could swim a lap at age 4. They are age 8 and 11 now and still do swim team ( my oldest year round). My youngest loves to swim but isn’t sure it is her true sport but she loves to swim in the ocean so I told her she has to stick with summer swim team to keep gaining strength. Ocean swimming is tough!!

Reply

I’ve ran Grandma’s full twice and the half once and ouuuff. I’ll never run it again. Spring races just aren’t my jam. I’m super affected by the heat and in MN (especially up North) the temp will go from the 50’s to the 80’s in a weekend. The last time I ran the full, the forecast was supposed to be 50/60’s and cloudy/rainy and ended up not a cloudy in the sky and 80’s. When I got to mile 20, the course director black flagged the event. I still finished but it was the hardest race I have ever ran in my entire life! (and I’ve done a 70.3!) The time before that one it was foggy nearly the whole race so it was like running on a treadmill outside for 20 miles. That being said, the North Shore is AMAZING! And the town of Duluth loves the marathon so once you get to mile 19/20 it’s full of cheering people and amazing energy. But if you run it, three pieces of advice. 1: be ready for every single type of weather! And only trust the weather you see when you wake up because even at night it can be saying one thing and then switch. 2: The first 19 miles are really hard to cheer for. If you know that going into it, it makes it easier. If you don’t, and think you are going to draw energy from the crowds, it can be a real rough start. 3: make sure you know the route for the final mile. There are a lot of turns!! And if you don’t know that going into it, you’ll start speeding up too fast because you can see the finish line. It kills a lot of people.

I’d love to have you come run Grandma’s because I’d love to finally have a chance to meet you!!! But if I’m going to recommend a MN marathon, my vote goes for the Twin Cities marathon in October. It’s hands down my favorite marathon. (And just happens to run right next to Target Field… the Twins baseball stadium… another one Andrew could check off his list ;) Oh! And they have family races the Saturday before. They even have a diaper dash and toddler trot that Skye could do!! (did I convince you yet?? haha)
