Books! My favorite topic. If you up for a more difficult read, but incredibly powerful The Kitchen House has been a favorite for me this year. More adventurous Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer is one of my favorites (almost the Everest climb in the late 90’s) or if you want a soft murder mystery series (I think there is 15 books now) with a ton of character development then try the Louise Penny series. Start with book one Still Life.

Quote of the day: A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, the man who never reads only lives one!

Reply

Okay, that quote is amazing. I have never heard that yet. THANK YOU so much for the recommendations and I just placed a hold on Still Life (I love murder mysteries) and The Kitchen House. My library doesn’t have Into Thin Air for kindle loans but I”ll have to go find that somewhere else. Thank you thank you. Have a beautiful day!

Reply

Jon Krakauer also wrote Into the Wild; true story about Christopher McCandless. You may heard about this years ago, when Sean Penn directed the movie. It’s a very interesting read.

Hi Janae ?
Miracle Creek and The Mother in Law.
Best wishes for Saturday!

Reply

Going to get The Mother in Law today (my library doesn’t have it… boo) and I’ll check for Miracle Creek too. THANK YOU MARY and I hope your day is a great one!

If you’re looking for something light and fun to read, I recommend anything Molly Harper. Her paranormal romances are so much fun. I just finished re-listening the the audio books from the “Nice Girls Don’t Have Fangs” series. She writes in the first person with a great deal of sarcasm, so I identify :).

Sentence for the day: It’s my Friday!! I get to work a 4/10 schedule, so Thursdays are always my favorite!
Good Luck on Saturday. I’ll be sending speedy vibes your way.

Reply

HAPPY FRIDAY MEGAN! I hope your next three days are full of relaxing and all of the things you want to do. Thank you so much and Molly Harper’s books sound perfect (can’t find them at my library so I’m going to search Target today:)! Have a wonderful day and thanks for the help!

I’m seeing so many of the same books I was about to recommend :)
1. The Nightingale – Kristin Hannah — A-MAY-ZING. I loved it so much.
2. …similar to the Nightingale is All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. It’s also about WWII, and is just as captivating. I recommend both! Maybe space them out a little though…they’re very emotional!

3. From Scratch – Tembi Locke
4. The Nest – Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney
5. Where the Crawdads Sing – Delia Owens

What book did you read that wasn’t great?

Reply

I loved The Nightingale so so much and just added All the Light We Cannot See to my holds list at the library along with Where the Crawdads Sing and From Scratch! THANK YOU.
When life hands you lululemons…I saw it recommended a bunch of places but I just could not get into it and cringed a bunch of times throughout the book! I HATE giving negative reviews on things (it always makes me feel bad) so I usually don’t say anything at all when I don’t like something ha! Have a wonderful day.

Reply

Oh yeah I’ve definitely seen that book recommended a bunch of places but it hadn’t quite caught my interest yet. I’m always interested to hear what books people weren’t huge fans of – nothing wrong with that if something wasn’t your taste! But I agree that reading, or leaving, negative reviews out there can feel icky. I hope you enjoy all these new books!

Reply

Totally… and I like seeing when people warn me that a book isn’t great too! I need to work on sharing that side too:) . Thanks again for the help Anna. Enjoy your Thursday!

I am always looking for new book recs! I finished Something in the Water a few weeks ago, its a good twisty thriller. I enjoyed The Lying Game and The Other Woman this year, too. Also, I also recommend A Great Alone and The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah…. two of my all time favs! Happy reading!!

PS – I am excited to see you grabbed Cassy’s Cook Once cookbook! I hope it helps you with meal planning as much as it has helped my house. Try the Confetti Chicken Casserole!!! And the Chicken Street Tacos!

Reply

Oh I LOVED Something in the Water (I felt like I was breathing heavy from feeling so intense the whole time)! Nightingale is one of my all time favorites too. I am going to check out The Lying Game and The Other Woman too.. thank you! Thank you for the recommendation, I am going to start with it this next week. Have a wonderful day!

Bright side by Kim Holden. Then when you finish that, Gus is the sequel.

Reply

Everyone at work here has been raving about “where the crawdads sing”. and “the nightingale” I haven’t read them as I love more of a mystery/thriller category, but all four of them can’t be wrong! I just finished The Whistler by John Grisham and loved that. But I love all his books.

Reply

Where the Crawdads Sing has been one of my favorite reads of the year! Also, I see someone suggested The Art of Racing in the Rain. and highly recommend that book too. The movie comes out August 9th and I can’t wait!!

Hi Janae, I’d like to ask you which belly band for running did you use (or some other that you recommend) for running while pregnant. You always have the best ideas or advice :)
I’m like your children when I’m in Ikea – I take stuffed animals and walk around with them giving them voices ;) it’s so much fun.

Reply

HEY! Oh thank you so much and congrats wahoo! The one I used is no longer available but this one is similar: https://amzn.to/2L4CSjd

Have a wonderful day!

Reply

Thank you so much, Janae! I’m 39 and this is going to be our first child :). I’ve been an avid runner since childhood (races at school), then I prolonged my distance at 18 to around 10-15k, then ran my first marathon at 23 and never stopped running. I just shifted to walks this last month and now I already run 5k in the forest. I’m so happy for my new Garmin (thank you for your answer last time!), it’s so light and I chose the one with light green wristband, so beautiful! :)
I’m thankful you took your time for me and found a similar support belt to yours! I see it has great support and I love it! Our baby will probably be just about a week difference to Skye (mid-December) :)
Have a great day!

I just finished Educated by Tara Westover. So so good. I want to read it again with my husband.

I’m currently reading “Grit” by Angela Duckworth, I’ve heard great things about, it’s a little dry so far/research-y, but I have a feeling it’ll get better once I get into the sport relationship. It’s essentially about talent vs. grit.

Michelle Obama’s, “Becoming”!!

The Alice Network

You’ve probably already read it but “Where the Crawdads Sing” is amazing on Audiable!

I read a great memoir by Dani Shapiro called INHERITANCE–she and her husband did an ancestry DNA test on a whim, and she found out that instead of what she believed all her life–100% Jewish–her DNA revealed she was only 52% Jewish. She grew up in an Orthodox Jewish household, where things like sperm donors (especially in the 1960s–when she was conceived and born) were sacrelig, so this knowledge that her DNA was not what she thought and that this was an unspoken thing in her parents’ marriage (which she could only speculate about, as both of her parents had passed away…) shocked her entire sense of who she was in this world and how she could understand ideas of paternity. It’s a very well-written memoir, very thoughtful and engaging. I recommend!

I’m still waiting to hear on Kansas City (prayers? please?), so my only sentence for the day that has nothing to do with that is this:

A (very long, deep, uninterrupted) nap would be so nice.

Sending big high fives and hopes for some big-time joy out your way, GF!!! :)

You’ve probably already read it, but I just finished North, by Scott Jurek and it was great! The limits he pushed his body are incredible and inspiring! I haven’t read them, but these next books are the ones that Jenna Bush Hager has read or is reading for her book club ~ A Woman is No Man (Etaf Rum), The Last Romantics (Tara Conklin), The Unwinding of the Miracle (Julie Yip-Williams) & Searching for Sylvie Lee (Jean Kwok). Lindsey Hein recommends Just Mercy (Bryan Stevenson – and it’s a heavy topic), as well as Running Home (Katie Arnold – if you listened to a recent episode of her podcast :) ) And I read somewhere about The Death of Mrs. Westaway (Ruth Ware who also wrote The Woman in Cabin 10). HAPPY READING and good luck on Saturday!

Lots of great book recommendations in the comments. One I didn’t see mentioned is What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty. You’re at the perfect point in your life to read it! You’ll relate to the main character who is a mom with young children. The author also wrote Big Little Lies, but What Alice Forgot is my favorite.

I made those pb cups for Christmas neighbor treats last year and had more people comment on them than ever before!

I really like everyday-reading.com book lists if you want lots of options!

I recently read The Wednesday Wars to see if my nine year old would like it. Even though it’s juvenile fiction I really enjoyed it and it’s a fast read.

Love those pb cups too and I make in a regular muffin tin as well-my fav & just about to have one!
