Friday Favorites & That’s Why They Call It That.

For years and years I have run on a trail that I heard many people call the LA Freeway.  I had no idea why they called it the LA Freeway.  I just found out last week they call it that to stand for Lactic Acid Freeway.

And this is why it is called Lactic Acid Freeway… it is non-stop up and down and by the time you get back to your car your legs will be shaking.

10 miles @ 9:28 average.  My legs were feeling the mile repeats from the day before but this is really going to help build strength.

I went with two of my friends.  The views were gorgeous.  It’s starting to get hot (for me:) and I was very sweaty when I got home!

Just a normal day at our house.

Andrew had a training for work so he was only gone for half the day and then we all went to a splash pad but it started thundering so we switched to games at the table.

For dinner we had leftovers from the night before but instead of in tacos, we put it all on top of rice.  I think I liked it even better on rice vs tacos.

Time for a few Friday Favorites!

*This article HERE.  Everything about it.  It’s absolutely amazing and this is my favorite thing for the month:). Please read it if you get a chance and if you don’t have time then read these two sections I included.

*I saw these at Costco and knew that Skye was going to love them.  When I hand her one she acts as though I haven’t fed her in 2 days… she gobbles them up so fast.  She feels so cool dipping.  Everyone at our house loves them and they are easy to take on the go.

IMG 8036

*Proven fact in my opinion = Kodiak Cakes can do no wrong.  It took me too long to try out their little cups but I saw them at Target and had to buy them.  Such an easy snack that tastes delicious. Andrew has been taking them to the hospital too for a quick snack.

IMG 8040

*Seriously.  Brooks, you just have it figured out.  I love the way the Levitate 2s feel when I run in them and they are just so so pretty I can’t stop staring at them.

IMG 8101

*How have I lived 33 years of my life without knowing this?!  I’ve put them in before they were ripe and they harden up but I’ve never put them in when they are perfectly ripe.  Life changing information.

*I saw this on @ashleyklemieux (if you don’t follow her you should… she has an incredible story of overcoming grief and turning it into her strength) and bought it HERE.  I love a good self-tanner and this one is instant which is really nice.   A little goes a long way with it too!

I love hearing the amazing things you guys are up to!  These are from the last two weeks because of my whole laptop getting left at the airport thing while we were traveling:). If you want to be featured please send them in to [email protected]

Loribeth!!!  “I ran an 8k on Memorial Day and set a PR…….because I had never raced an 8k before, ha!!  It is called the Chattanooga Chase and is our city’s oldest road race…..this was the 52nd year they have done it! Some lady there has run it 47 out of 52 times! And a 90 year old lady did the 1 mile race!!  I think I found myself a new Memorial day tradition! It is VERY hilly…..the main hill is a road called Minnekahda and it is like a half mile up….at the top it is private property but every year for the Chase the owner allows the runners to pass thru and come down the other side. Let me tell you, i love uphills but don’t trust myself on the downhills so i was careful!  The whole course is thru beautiful neighborhoods on the golf course and right next to the Tennessee river…..so pretty! I finished in 45:55, which given the hills, 80 degree temps and high humidity at the start, i think it’s amazing! I was like 257 out of 549, so some fast folks run this! The winner had 25 minutes!! They also did a mile race and it was fun to cheer for the speedsters and the kiddos who ran! So cute!!  After they had food and drinks and awards….it was tons of fun and I got a sweet shirt, hat and socks!!”

Megan!!! “I’m so excited to share my latest accomplishment with you! On May 26th I ran the Mountains 2 Beach Marathon from Ojai, CA to Ventura, CA. The weather was perfect for running, 50’s and overcast, and the course is a nice gentle downhill to a beachside finish. I had a really great training cycle, followed by a crummy taper. During the taper I had some heel pain flare up, a pinched nerve in my neck, and my son gave me a cold. In spite of all my worries during the taper, I pulled out a great race! I finished in 3:31:54, a PR by 6 minutes, and a BQ by 3 minutes. I’m really hopeful this time will be good enough for me to get into Boston next year. Thanks for letting me share!”

Favorite board game is Clue!

I love my Levitates, but I feel like maybe they don’t last much longer for me than my Launches, which stinks bc they cost so much more. I may stick to the Launches, I love them and they come in such fun patterns……….the patriotic one is next!!

Reply

Ahhh I can’t wait to get out my patriotic Launch too. I need to get Clue… Brooke would love that one. Have a wonderful weekend Loribeth!

I got my son connect 4 for Christmas so that I could play it. Uno is fun, too.
I run in Ravennas. I got shinsplints when I tried the levitates. I want to try the ricochet. I will work up the courage at some point.
Have a great weekend!

Connect 4 is a game that I really love to play. Let me know when you try out the ricochet and keep loving those Ravennas (ps shin splints hurt so bad)! Thanks and you too!

We have a lagoon day this weekend!

My kids are really into uno and the game of life right now. I’m a big fan of games. But I’m ready to branch out from those two haha.

Oh we need to pick up Life for our kids! 8 days until your 10k AHHHH so exciting Jenny. Hope you are having a wonderful morning!

My kids love those dippers! Gotta love Costco!

My husband tells me about a dish in Okinawa called Taco Rice. He had it often when he was stationed there. It’s pretty much what you made, except less delicious because there’s no avocadoes and other amazing goodness. It’s literally everything you’d have on a taco dished over rice instead of tortillas.

There’s even an entry in Wikipedia about it! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taco_rice

Turns out I might like Taco Rice more than tacos:) . It was so cool. Thanks for sharing this with me Elizabeth! Have a wonderful weekend!

You might be interested in the body neutrality movement I just heard about. Unlike body positivity in which women are encouraged to love their body at any shape (I’m not saying this is right or wrong, just defining it), body neutrality teaches you to love or hate your body, doesn’t really matter…instead we need to acknowledge that our bodies are only a small part of who we are. At times you may love it, at other times you may dislike it (and that’s ok too!), at all times the body is only 1 of the many parts that make up a person. A friend posted something recently and it was my first introduction to this idea and it really resonated with me. Body positivity is not a bad thing, yet it continues to place emphasis on your body. Why is our body such a main emphasis at all? I was discussing with a friend and she said she thinks we need to live between the 2 ideas…and I agree. From a religious perspective we are taught that our bodies are gifts and we are stewards over them and therefore they are an important part of who we are (body positivity) AND we are also our spirits and so much more beyond our physical bodies that we shouldn’t dwell ONLY on our bodies (body neutrality). Anyway, I thought this idea fit with that intuitive eating article well. ?

Chelsea, can I call you right now and have an entire conversation with you about this?!?! I have been thinking about this concept a lot and I think I love it even more than body positivity. Why are we all thinking about our bodies aesthetics/size/shape (good thoughts or bad thoughts) so much? Like you said there are so many more things about us. Our bodies are incredible tools to lead us to great things but the constant focus (I need to love my body etc) leads us away from thinking about helping other people. Body neutrality= I feel good about this. And while I will continue to never say anything negative about my body in front of my kids, I think I will be talking less about the things I love about my body less because I don’t need to be talking about our bodies… there are a million more things for us to discuss. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and I feel like what you said was right on. Thank you Chelsea! I’m going to write an entire post about this someday:)

Thank you for sharing that article–I had seen the headline, but I hadn’t clicked on it because it’s so hard to know (like the writer points out) what is helpful and what is harmful. That was a GREAT read–I also get so frustrated when my friends spend all their time talking about how many calories are in a sandwich or what their legs look like. There are millions of better things we could be talking about! I have thought for a long time that even talking about loving our bodies can be harmful–I think it puts so much emphasis on thinking about the way you look, which is just not where our heads need to be all the time. So many more important thoughts and conversations we could be having.

Reply

Kristin, yes yes yes. I am so glad you loved the article. I fully agree with you… there is just SO much more to us as humans and things in the world we need to be thinking about or talking about. Thinking/talking/spending so much time on our bodies takes us away from helping others and that’s just a big problem! You are doing awesome and I love what you said, ‘is just not where our heads need to be all the time. So many more important thoughts and conversations we could be having.” Thank you for sharing and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Favorite things this week is trying a new pizza place tonight with family, my drizzly trail run this morning with a besty, getting to see more family this weekend and the fact that it’s Friday and we’re that much closer to last day of school! We have snow make up days so school is out on the 19th. We have it good – some kiddos are in school until the 26th!!!
Favorite board games – whatever I can get most of my family to play! So far it’s been my and my 5 year battling it out at Pop the Pig, Jenga, Monopoly and go Fish. Somehow he legit beats me every time and every game!
Tonight is dinner with my mom and my boys and then we’re driving 2 hrs north to stay the weekend with my bro & SIL where we’ll also hang with my dad for Father’s Day. It’s always a good time when we’re there!
My shoes are Altra Timp 1.5 for trails and Mizuno Inspire for road. I’m getting to the point of needing new road shoes and usually it stresses me out a little but I’m really excited this time!
Have a great day!!

I hope the pizza place is amazing! Your run this morning sounds perfect and I am so happy that school is almost over for you guys! I am going to have to check out Pog the Pig and Brooke is starting to beat me in most of our games too. Have the best time with your family this weekend:)

A game called Stare is really fun and funny. I played with my two 12 yo’s on one team and me and 11 yo on another team.
You pick a card and for 20 seconds “stare” to try and memorize what’s on the card. Then the other team gets to ask you questions about things on the card. We all loved it. Lots of laughs because some of the questions were really random.
Stare is ages 13-adult. They also have Stare Jr for ages 6-12. I’m guessing, less details on the cards and easier questions.

Okay, that game sounds like so much fun… our kids would love Stare Jr. Getting it! Thanks Kate and have a wonderful weekend:)

I LOVE Kodaik Cakes, they’re not something you can get that easily in the UK, but Amazon usually comes through for me and I love them before a busy day x

Oh I am so glad you can get them on Amazon in the UK! Have a wonderful day and weekend!

Intuitive eating changed things for me. It was a huge relief to stop fighting. If you don’t mind some asking- Did you ever binge eat? I was warned about that by people who’ve gone through ED recovery using IE, but I think it’s overblown as an issue.

Reply

Oh I am SO glad that you are doing so well! That is a great question and one I’m not sure how to answer because I don’t know how to define binge eating. In my brain as I was in recovery then yes I am sure I had meals and days where I felt like I binged but now I look back and see that I was just eating MORE and heartier than what I was used to during restriction but is that a binge or eating what my body needed? I’m sure I felt like I was out of control at times but I just don’t know what the true definition of binge is… because sometimes I think we need huge meals. As far as sugar goes, yes I do think that I have had many experiences where I ate so much I felt sick. After restricting it so long I probably went overboard but I think that is what helped me find the right place for me. From going from too little to too much it helped me find somewhere in the middle where my body felt best. Long story short, I don’t think bingeing was a problem for me (or for many people that turn to IE) BUT maybe their definition of what a binge is the problem (ie eating way more than what they do when they were restricting). I hope any of this makes sense, I wish we could talk about it in real life:) . Have a wonderful day!

What a fun way to incorporate the whole family on a run!
I love board games! Some favorites are Clue, Mall Madness, and the Game of Life!
We leave for vacation tomorrow! Heading to Gulf Shores with my husband, daughter, in laws, and brother and sister in law with their two boys! This will be our first family vacation to the beach with my husbands side. My daughter just turned one almost 3 weeks ago and this will be her second beach trip, but her first was in Hawaii at 4 months so this will be all new to her! Excited for a week off work and relaxing!

Thanks for the avocado tip. I definitely did not know that! I see more avocado purchases in my future! I am always an Asics Gel Nimbus girl. I have tried so many other brands, but I have been wearing them for years and my feet feel amazing in them. I want so badly to love Brooks because they are way cuter, but they don’t work for my feet. Have a great weekend! Wilmington, DE
