Are You Afraid?

I did ten miles with Emilee and Maddie to start out the week!  It was 39 degrees when we started so that was fun.  Thank you Brooke for the picture.

Brooke started off her week with the skip-it.  We bought one for Knox too and these things have provided hours of entertainment for our kids already!

IMG 6101

PS the one she got from school broke so we got her and Knox ones with counters at Target.

IMG 6104

Andrew and I have been loving them too and competing against each other.

IMG 5893

Skye is really into joining me in stretching after a run.  My hamstrings are SO much happier than they were a few weeks ago

IMG 6115

Brooke completed her MARATHON! The kids at her school had about a month to run 26.2 miles and Brooke did it.  They gave out a prize and yellow bracelets to all of the kids that completed the challenge.

When she wants something… she goes for it.  I don’t think I ran outside of soccer practice and recess when I was her age and here she is running a marathon in a month.  I’m very proud.

IMG 6109

Skye and I had a few errands to get in yesterday!

IMG 6126

Back to the store for the second time of the day because I forgot some things we needed the first time.

IMG 6139

Skye had quite the day of adventuring.

IMG 6144

We made it to the best time of year= Watermelon, corn on the cob and the bbq providing dinner.

IMG 6060

PS Andrew solved my problem and ordered all of these for me from the Ebay link many of you sent (and they were so much cheaper through Ebay).  I am officially stocked for the rest of the year;)

Random running thought for today:

I have had a lot of people tell me over the years that they are too afraid to run with other people because they do not want to slow the other people down.  They are worried that they aren’t fast enough or are going to need to take breaks etc.

Fun fact: I am slower (based off of PRs and the race we just did:) than all of the girls I am going to be training with from here on out. They’ve also been doing speed all year so far and I’m just starting it again too.

IMG 4667

It would be so sad for me if I missed out on the fun mornings and the lessons I am going to learn from them if I decided to not run with them because of the fear of slowing them down.

Take the challenge up ahead of you as an opportunity, not a threat.

If you want to run with people but you are too afraid of it then let go of that threat and see it as an opportunity to make amazing friends and get faster as you get to know the back of their heads really well.  That’s what I’m going to do so join me in doing so!

I think runners are some of the most accepting people on the planet so don’t you worry… if you want to run with people then go for it!  I’ve run with many many people over the years and not once has anyone been frustrated when I needed to stop to use the restroom or tie my shoe or breathe and if they don’t want to stop then they just keep going!

IMG 5880

PS Skye and I went to Runner’s Corner yesterday to pick up my jerseys etc and talk to our coach.  Talking with Hawk (coolest name ever, right?) made me even more excited for all of this training up ahead.

it’s nice I don’t have to decide about what top to wear for races now:

IMG 6136

Skye had a great time while we were there getting in her laps on the track.

Hey Janae!
Favorite summer meal—either grilled burgers/ or BLTs with homegrown tomatoes, corn on the cob, pasta salad, and local fruit!!!! It’s almost local strawberry season here, and I CAN’T WAIT! My favorite time of year–local strawberries, the start of summer, almost my birthday, and SCHOOL IS OVER IN NINE DAYS! WOOT WOOT!

Why is Andrew wearing one shoe and one sock in the Skip It photo?? ha ha ha I would think this would alter his effectiveness. ha ha

Reply

Can we come over for those BLTs and the sides, that all sounds so good. Nine more days and happy birthday (a bit early)! I hope you are going to celebrate big time. Hahaha he thinks that having that shoe off actually helps him… but I beat him so maybe not;) . Have a wonderful day Jen!

Training for my first Olympic distance triathlon. The individual distances don’t worry me… putting them all together at the same time has me a little like ???. By race day I’ll be like ??????

Reply

I am SO excited about your first Olympic tri! You are so right… the training is going to get you there and so so strong and I better get to hear all about it. You are my hero for swimming.. I need to work on that! It is such a good workout! Have a wonderful Tuesday!

Have you noticed that skye looks exactly like your mom?

YESSSSS!!! And people used to say that too about Brooke when she was about that age. I hope you are having a great Tuesday so far Minu!

I’m going to target immediately and getting a skip it!! My BFF and I would do it for HOURS on the weekends when we were little. I remember our goal was always to get to 1000 on the counter, but the dang thing would reset haha. I’m glad you got all of those lip glosses…..:)

Reply

My absolute favorite summer meal is bbq pork steaks, corn on the cob, cheesy potato casserole, fresh tomatoes from the garden with homemade cherry pie for dessert. Yum!

Reply

Well now I need that entire meal asap. That sounds amazing. Have a fabulous day Kimberly!

Reply

YESSSS go get one now! Hahaha that happened to our kids the other day and there were definitely tears because it reset. Thanks Mollie and I hope you are having a really great day!

Ahahaha that’s so much lipgloss. 2nd place in husband of the year to Andrew (sorry mine is #1, that’s just how it goes).

A couple of toys that remind me of childhood – Lite Brite & Etch-A-Sketch. :)
One of our favorite summer meals: https://www.myfoodandfamily.com/recipe/143961/gourmet-chipotle-burgers

I am 100% making those burgers… Andrew will love them! Thank you and Lite Brite… I need to get one of those for my kids. Have a wonderful day Amanda!

Starting to run again makes me so scared! I’ve taken a few years off due to having 2 kids, and an injury in between when I tried to start up again. I’m going SOOOO slow that it’s killing me, but I’m hoping it pays off!

I’ve always loved watermelon, but my kids love it so much that it makes me love it even more. We haven’t gotten one yet, so I’m thinking I may pick one up on the way home!

My sisters and I shared one skip it and fought over it all the time. I was the best at it! The skip it and then some plastic seat thing that you could hang onto the middle of and it spun you around (vague description, I know) are the two toys I remember the best from my childhood.

Have a great day Janae!

Reply

I totally know what you mean Sara… it’s scary to come back after a break/injury/babies. It will absolutely pay off and you are coming back the smart way. So excited to hear about how it goes for you. Grab a watermelon today! I need to see your skip it skills and figure out this plastic seat toy! Have a beautiful day Sara!

Reply

Maybe a Sit and Spin is the toy you’re thinking of? We had one growing up & I think my kids had one too. NO WAY I could go on it now – I’d get queasy with all the spinning!

Right now I’m nervous putting in a solid intense training block after a hip flexor injury last year. I signed up for a 10k in September and am just going for it though. Been feeling good running for the last 6 months so I think it’s time for the challenge.

This weekend is the Cabot Trail Relay Race though! I get to run the anchor leg for my team and I am psyched. It ends in the village I live in!! One big run party.

Favourite meal: glazed ham. Not good for the summer though. BBQ burgers and corn on the cob, or lobster, are always yummy.

Had a skip it, but the ankle blister causing Pogo Ball brings back childhood memories for me!

My partner and are have very different strengths so we aren’t overly competitive with each other.

Reply

I am SO excited that you are back after your injury last year Julia. I am cheering you on for this 10k and you better keep me updated on how the training is going. Have the best time at the relay, that sounds like so much fun. I need some lobster right now. Hahaha the kids were talking about their ankles hurting yesterday. I need to get a pogo ball. Have a beautiful day Julia!

I love that striped shirt! Where is it from?

Thank you! I got it at Madewell last year… they have great button up tops! Have a fabulous day Lindsey.

How exciting, Janae! Running with faster people I think helps to challenge us and can really help us get faster! And you are so right, no runner I know has ever been annoyed if I had to slow down or stop, generally they’re happy for a little break;) or if they’re going for something, they can just keep on going too! I think runners are fine with it generally because we have all been the slower one in the pack before trying to keep up with faster paces. There will always be someone faster than us and I’m so so glad you aren’t missing out on this wonderful opportunity—> sub sub 3;)

Right now running doesn’t scare me. Since injury, I just have come back kind of fearless. I know to listen to my body but I’m much more confident in pushing myself. However! The part of my training that scares me a little is joining CrossFit. They are all so so strong and I’m not at all and its a massive challenge for me, I modify every move. For the past few times I’ve felt stupid and everyone is just so encouraging and doesn’t care what weight you use, so I need to remember they are kind and encouraging people just like runners too and I can do this and will get stronger:)

I’m actually not a watermelon fan, I think I’ve had a few of them that were not ripe and so I just don’t care to find a ripe one now, haha.

My fiancé and I aren’t competitive with each other at all. We push each other and motivate each other, but since we met I’ve been a runner and he’s been a power lifter. But, he also runs too a few times a week but not for speed, and now I lift but very light weights just for a little strength. So it’s nice that we can enjoy each others main sport and encourage us to be the best but we are just on such different levels that it doesnt really make us competitive:)

Haha, sorry this has been a long post!

I agree.. we are all just happy for a little breather and to just be running with people. We all get it, you are so right. You are doing so well on your comeback Eleanor. Oh crossfit would definitely intimadate me but I’m sure they are just like runners and wanting everyone to succeed. Look at you two joining in on each other’s passions! I love it. I love hearing from you and I hope you have a wonderful day!

Reply

I am afraid to up my mileage too much because I don’t know where the sweet spot of most mileage and my normal life flips over to more mileage and tired/hangry/etc. wife and mom takes over.

Reply

Oh I totally get that… so hard to find that perfect number! Hope and Chris are so lucky to have you pay such close attention to that so that you can be there for them. Have a great day!

Reply

Currently I probably get the most nervous for speed work. But that’s because I just need to change my mindset from “I am slow, always have been, always will be.” To “If I put in the work anything is possible!” Summer foods to me are salads for sure. And peaches! Peaches are the best part about summer. I was a big fan of Barbies growing up and hoola hoops! My husband and I are competitive in two things. Pickle ball and guessing baby genders. He comes from a big family so we guess baby genders a LOT. So we usually make bets too so whoever wins gets to pick a treat of some sort.

Reply

I LOVE how you are changing your story with your thoughts… can’t wait to see you get faster Ehrin! You can and you will. I just started drooling when you mentioned peaches. They are seriously the best. We need to play pickle ball haha. I love that summer reminds you of guessing the baby genders too. Have a fabulous day!

Could you share a link to the Skip It you purchased for the kids? My Target doesn’t have them and there are so many different kinds online!

that is incredible that Brooke’s school did a marathon challenge. What are the chances? Also totally feel you on the running with other people thing. When I am the slower one, I get self conscious, but when I am the faster one, I am totally happy to go at the speed of a friend. Funny how perspective works :)

Reply

Seriously so cool that her school does that! I totally know what you mean, when I’m the faster one I could care less if I need to slow down for the people I’m running with so why worry when it is the other way around? We just want to run with people. I hope you have a wonderful day Nicole!

Hawk is probably the sweetest person on the planet. Being on the RC team is a dream!! Also, watermelon is the only melon I will eat – that’s pretty much the only thing I’m super picky about, I can’t stand melons!

Reply

Right?! He seriously is so kind and so interested in making sure everyone loves their running experience. REALLY? Oh Brooke could live off of cantaloupe, send yours over to her haha. Have a great day Tess!

Reply

Brooke is amazing! Please tell her congrats! That determination on yours and Andrew’s faces is hilarious! I would have never thought to check out ebay for lip gloss! Genius! Super exciting and very sweet he did that for you!
I used to be very scared to run with other people until I ran with an amazing group on trails. The speedy waited for the slower people at intersections so no one got lost, everyone had someone to run with and everyone was so encouraging and kind. I have speedy friends I run with and I’m always intimidated but I know they value our time together more than pace. If we’re going to do speed work, we meet at a track and run our own paces. Same with hill work. That way we’re not alone per-say and we get to run our own workout.
Something else that scares me is running a new route alone. I’m also paranoid to run trails alone in the early am. Today though I ran a new route in a different neighborhood and it was great! Got hissed at by a Goose but didn’t get attacked (score!), saw 3 other runners and didn’t get lost!
Favorite meal – always and forever tacos, pizza, all things BBQ, all things fruit.
Have a great day!

Reply

I totally will! Hahah we were both in it to win it! I love that… runners are the best. I love how inclusive runners are. So glad you found a new route in a different area that you liked and stay away from that goose! I hope you get some pizza and tacos soon.. I’m drooling. Enjoy your day Jenny!

I’m working on getting back to running consistently after doing more gym workouts (some include running, but that’s not the focus). I’m a little scared that my legs aren’t so much up to the distances and speeds that I want to work up to, but yeah, I’m sticking to it so far. If I get more consistent with some accessory training to help support my knees more, I’ll feel better about it.
Most things on the grill are a hit in the summer, though I’ve grilled in all seasons–it just tastes better in the summer :)
I LOVE the skip-it! I had one as a kid, and my daughters each dedicated themselves to mastering it several years ago–it’s tricky at first, but so fun when it clicks. Kickball also reminds me of childhood summer fun.
I’m really only competitive with myself…UNLESS I sense that I’m the target of someone else’s competitiveness. If I can tell someone is trying to outsprint me, sometimes I’ll just go for it, LOL!

Reply

Keep sticking to it Corey, you are doing awesome with your accessory training too… way to go! I agree, the grill just tastes best in the summer. Thank you for reminding me of kickball, I need to play that with my kids now. Have a wonderful day Corey!

I had a Skip It as a kid and loved it! I remember playing with it with a friend down the street in the driveway. We’d go for as long as we could and then the other person would have a turn. Isn’t it funny the things we remember from way back then?

Reply

Oh I love it! It seriously is so fun to think back on those experiences… too bad I can’t remember some of the important things I need to remember now ha. Have a wonderful day Fiona!

Reply

First of all, WTG Andrew! This is totally something my husband would do, so thoughtful!

And YES to running with other people. It is SO intimidating but I truly believe that it is one of the best things to help you improve your running! I’ve ran with faster people and while it’s so hard, they are so kind and the few times that I have ran with slower people, I just make sure it’s a day that I should be going slower anyway :)

A good watermelon is the BEST!

Ha, my whole family is competitive but we are also good sports for the most part.

Reply

I totally agree with everything you said about running with faster people. I would love to see your family play a game haha. I hope you get an amazing watermelon soon! Enjoy your day Marissa!

For me, the thing that makes me nervous is running in public. I am pretty big for a runner and it’s easy to get self-conscious when you’re surrounded by much smaller, fitter-looking people. This drives me to do it anyway because I know that 99% of people couldn’t care less and the rest aren’t my problem anyway.

It is sooo sweet that Andrew order you your favorite lip glosses. It is so wonderful when spouses care about things that are important to you, even if they might not understand it themselves. What a keeper!

Go Brooke! At my office we have a health app where you can earn up to $500 a year. Part of that is earning $15 a month for walking/running 56 miles a month. I love it for some extra motivation. I usually hit the goal by the 20th of the month, but since I was recently on vacation and walked A TON, I hit it by the 10th of the month.
Also I recently bought strawberries because they are in season and they are so good. Love them on my oatmeal in the morning. I refuse to buy them when they aren’t in season because they get so expensive. Yay for grilling season too.

Reply

Andrew is definitely a keeper and knows the way to your heart, haha ;) Congrats to Brooke! What a huge accomplishment and it seems like she already has your love of running, which is awesome. I feel like sometimes I am slower running and it makes me not want to run with other people because I might slow them down. But exactly like you said, us runners are very accepting people. Every time I have went with a group that I have had that fear of slowing them down, I have a great time. Runners in general are just an awesome group of people! Wilmington, DE
