You Know…. + You Don’t Train to Feel Your Best + Help Andrew:)

7.3 miles with Emilee and I felt like garbage.  We averaged an 8:06 pace and my stomach and legs were just not feeling good at all.  I’m going to take this as a sign that they are just getting feeling like junk out of the way so that on Saturday they feel much better;)

But then again if I feel like I did yesterday on Saturday—> “You don’t train to feel your best, you train to be at your best when you feel your worst.”  All of the miles we put in aren’t to guarantee that we feel amazing on race day, those miles/workouts during training help us to keep moving forward when things are really hurting during the race.

IMG 6823

Over the years I have learned to go into a race knowing that there are going to be points where I hurt very very badly (not injury pain, just fatigue/cramps/etc).  I think I used to go into a race hoping, praying and wishing that I will feel great the whole time as I go for my goal and then when things started crumbling, I didn’t know how to cope with it.  Now I expect to feel good and bad and everything in between throughout the race and come up with ways to handle it so when the pain train shows up I will say hello and keep moving forward because runner’s aren’t afraid of pain.

PS I miss my iPod nano very much.

PPS the above picture is from my most positive split race ever:

Screen Shot 2014 06 14 at 2 24 02 PM

Instead of showering right after my run I sat down and got my recovery boots on and Skye brought me over some perfume.  I think she was trying to tell me that I should have showered first.

IMG 6828

I’m not ready for her to be able to open doors yet…

IMG 6833

The only way to make sure that I make dinner = do it during Skye’s nap and then put it in the fridge.

Brooke and I made Marathon Lasagna from Run Fast. Eat Slow.  Brooke recently told me she wants to be a chef when she grows up and I would really love that.  I would volunteer to be her #1 taste tester.

IMG 6838

Later on the cousins came over to play.

IMG 6843

Skye went through FOUR outfits yesterday haha! She and Andrew went on a few errands.  Andrew has trained her to give a kiss goodbye before she leaves.

IMG 4933

We went to Aladdin and it was INCREDIBLE.  Skye lasted for about an hour and then Andrew and I switched off with her.

IMG 6851

It may not look pretty but this lasagna was amazing.  Spinach, sweet potatoes, ground turkey, ricotta and much more… and the best part is that we have enough for dinner tonight too:)

IMG 6855

Time to get the legs moving for a mini workout before the race.  The intervals are going to be short but I am sure they are going to burn nicely.

And just a few you knows…..

*You know you are tired when one morning you rub CONDITIONER on your legs because you thought it was your Bath and Body Works lotion that you were rubbing all over yourself.

IMG 5737

*You know Andrew is busy when it takes us over a week to catch up on the latest Bachelorette episode…

——————————————————————————————————————–

Andrew is trying to find a good selection of filling/nutritious snacks that he can take to work each day.  I made him a batch of Superhero muffins for this week to take and we would LOVE to hear what you guys take to work each day.   Share what snacks work for you during your work day?

Those of you that have the Run Fast. Eat Slow cookbook, what are your favorite dinner recipes from it?

Is anybody watching Bachelorette this season?  What do you think?

Ever had a race with a big positive split?  Which one was it?

love the tuna white bean salad from run fast cook fast east slow! For work snacks, thinks like full-fat greek yogurt, string cheese, and trail mix are good if you’re trying to stay full and energized. Healthy fat + protein is the way to go!

Reply

I was looking at that one and wondering if it was good. Love those ideas and I agree, I feel most satisfied and energized when I get in some fat and protein with my snacks too. Have a great rest of your day Jessica!

I love Lara bars (esp the chocolate chip cookie dough one) and RX bars! They keep me full and get that sweet tooth, and I don’t have to worry about them going bad if I keep them in my drawer. I like any of the Rx bars that have chocolate. :-)

Ooh, I’ve made mostly salads and sides from that cookbook . . . but you’re motivating me to try the lasagna!

Watching the Bachelorette for the first time ever–some of my friends get together to watch it every week so I joined in. It is crazy but I like the friend time.

I ran a 5k once ten days post surgery. First mile was in the 9-9:30 range, but the third mile was like 14 minutes? That one HURT. But I was glad I did it. (P.S. My doctor had cleared to me exercise after the 10-day point. Probably still not my best idea.)

Reply

Yes, try the lasagna… so good. That is such a great idea to bring those bars and always have them ready for you in your drawer. Way to get out there so soon after your surgery (with your doctors approval:). That is TOUGH. Have a wonderful day!

Reply

I usually take Greek yoghurt to work. But oh my gosh I was stressing about this season because I wasn’t sure if I would like Hannah but I do! Her composure and camera presence has come a long way. That being said my husband is watching this season with me and it’s his first time watching and he is obsessed haha! We really like Peter (the pilot), Tyler C. (Elvis), and (handsome) Mike. We give a lot of the guys nicknames so we can tell them apart! Also super thrilled you know who went home ;)

Reply

I felt the same way.. I was worried she would be too much but I actually LOVE her this season. I love that your husband is watching it with you too. Peter is our favorite too. I hope your Wednesday has been really great so far Ehrin!

Reply

I love Chomps (beef jerky stick) for on the go. Lara bars, small bag of almonds, bananas.
I almost skipped this bachelorette season and I’m so glad I didn’t! She’s not at all what I expected and I like her! Luke P needs to go he scares me!!

Reply

I am so glad we didn’t skip it either… Hannah is awesome and I love how bold she is. Great snacks, thanks so much Erin and keep in touch with your thoughts on the season. I always wonder, do you think the producers pay them extra or anything to be extra creepy?

Reply

I am lucky enough to have a fridge and toaster oven at work, so I make toast (Dave’s killer bread!) and slather it with those individual-sized PB cups or the on-the-go guacamole packs. The bread stores nicely in the freezer.

Reply

From Run Fast Eat Slow, my favorite dinners are Flu Fighter Chicken and Rice Stew, Fartlek Chili (husband’s fave), the High Altitude Meatballs with Simple Marinara, and the Gimme Veggies Fried Rice. Her minestrone soup is good too. Get the second cookbook too– it may even be better??

Reply

Whoops, didn’t mean to reply in this thread, my bad!

Reply

I just bought it and can’t wait to start making things from that one too. Thanks so much JP… making those meatballs next. Have a wonderful day!

Reply

Oh that is awesome… I will ask him when he gets home if he has a toaster! Thanks Emily and I am going to make this for my snack today haha. Enjoy the rest of your day!

How does he feel about nuts? I almost always have almonds or pistachios at work. Also fruit, like apple or clementine oranges. Have you guys ever tried Muir Energy gels? They are based out of San Diego, but I order them all the time. They have fast burning ones that are fruit based, but they also have slow burning flavors that are nut based. I love them and use them for my pre-long run fueling and also on hikes.

Love Shalane’s cookbooks! I have tailored her banana bread recipe to be vegan and then my husband and I also love the Wild West Rice Salad. Not sure the kids would be gung-ho about a salad for dinner though. :)

Also…me too on the iPod nano. Mine died a few months ago and have been using my husband’s newer generation version (where they switched over to touch screen). However, when that one goes, I am not sure what I will do (besides be very sad).

Reply

He loves nuts so I will pick those up. We have not tried those gels, they sound awesome! Noooo to your ipod nano dying. I am still hoping that someday they come back with them. Enjoy your day Janelle!

I ran a 15 km race in December, my first 5 k was 31.06 and I felt good, then I had a cup of water and could’nt really run anymore, so I ran-walked and i finished in a bit more than 2 hours. I went to the first aid people and the wheeled me into their tent, and i had hypothermia! They gave me a blanket and a cup of hot soup and soon I was good to go again. Scary though, I was really glad I was there with a friend. (lesson learned: don’t hang around the start for too long, even if it doesn’t feel cold and don’t drink cold water). I have the Runners World cookbook and I should try more recipes from it. I take sandwiches to work, and an apple and a banana and some sort of biscuits. Sometimes some carrots, grapes or other fruit. I guess it’s easier for me, working behind my desk, than it is for Andrew in his job.
Have a great day!

Reply

YOU HAD HYPOTHERMIA!? Oh Eva… that must have been so terrible. I am so glad that you were okay! Those are great ideas, thanks so much Eva and I hope your Wednesday is going really well!

I work in healthcare too and it can be tough to find time to eat! People sometimes think I’m exaggerating when I say that literally there are times when I do not have time for a snack, much less a real meal :). That being said I always keep snacks close by that don’t need to be refrigerated and are easy to chew quickly lol. Beef jerky, nuts, RX bars, cutie oranges, and Reese’s peanut butter cups. 11 hours into a 12 hour shift they are a lifesaver!

Reply

YES… I can’t believe how busy you guys are! One day Andrew couldn’t eat anything until 3 in the afternoon. You are definitely not exaggerating. Definitely getting all of those items for Andrew!

Reply

The Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Chicken is very good!

I like to snack on dry cereal in the afternoons at work – usually some type of granola cereal, or Honey Nut Chex, Cinnamon Life, etc.

Reply

And now I know what I want for dinner tonight (I ended up eating leftover lasagna for lunch ha). Good idea on dry cereal, that sounds awesome! Enjoy the rest of your day Amanda.

Reply

The Flu Fighter Chicken Stew from that book is amazing! It has ginger which gives it this awesome flavor. I’ve made it for a few other people and it’s always a hit. There is also a fish in paper recipe that I like.

Reply

I need to make both of those! Thanks so much Sara! Enjoy the rest of your day.

Reply

For snacks I always bring to work a banana, a Siggi’s drinkable yogurt, trail mix, and a muffin from RFES. I generally don’t need all these snacks in a work day but then I’m prepared with healthy stuff if I get hungry!

Right now I am loving the Thai Quinoa Salad from the Run Fast, Cook Fast, Eat Slow cookbook!

I really like the quote about preparing yourself for performing well at the worst parts. I’ve really learned to be fearless with workouts. I may want to stop in the second interval but I just try to keep pushing and focus on the interval I’m in. Likely, I will get through it and if I don’t then I know my fitness level may not have been there or it wasn’t my day. But pushing through and focusing helps build that mental strength for race day.

Reply

I would much rather be over-prepared than underprepared with food! I cannot wait to make that salad, it sounds so good. Fearless… I love that concept Eleanor and I’m going to use that word on Saturday. I hope you are having a great day.

Reply

Hey Jenae,

I am a PA at our hospital here in town and have 4 busy kids and I also run marathons!! I met you and Andrew at the expo in Boston!! I have the same cook book as you and love so many of the recipes! The make ahead breakfast burritos are heaven bc they are very filling and are super easy at work just pop in the microwave. Also the breakfast frittatas and sweet potato breakfast cookies are amazing! The key at work is just making sure you have easy quick and healthy snacks. Granola bars, yogurt fruit etc! Good luck this weekend!

Reply

Tara, YES… I loved meeting you and talking. I remember wondering how in the world you do it all with everything on your plate. That really is the key and I’m excited to get prepping and buying things that are easy for him to eat! I hope you are having a great day:)

Reply

You need to make the Thai quinoa salad from their second cookbook (the recipe is also on their blog). It is so so good and will last a full week in the fridge (if you don’t eat it before then)!

Reply

I just got their second cookbook and I’m going to make that salad first out of everything. Thanks Emily and haha it definitely won’t last a week. I hope you are having a great day!

Reply

That lasagna looks amazing! I might have to look into that cookbook. I love the race picture you included because it so thoroughly captures how I’ve felt in so many races.

Reply

Yes, get the lasagna… so so good! Races sure bring out all of the emotions. I hope you are having a wonderful Wednesday Megan.

Reply

That is our favorite lasagna recipe!! The sweet potato makes it!!

Reply

Yes… it’s the sweet potato that takes it to the next level! So so good. Have a wonderful day Kristin.

I have similar door handles in my house, and found out that they are also easy for a motivated canine to open! My dog just puts her front paws up on the handle, and she’s in, LOL!
Isn’t it great when kids are interested in preparing meals? Brooke is sure to be a natural :)
My first Marine Corps Marathon was a big positive split. Right on pace to the half (2:08ish at the Capitol building), then the sun blazed through the clouds, temp climbed, humidity spiked, and my poor fueling habits finished me off (5:26 at the finish).
I used to snack on dried fruit/trail mix. Costco (of course) used to have a big bag of a great blend with dried strawberries, kiwi, pineapple, mango, papaya…not sure if they still do, but it was yummy.
I hope you get some rest and start feeling better pronto!

Reply

YOUR DOG can open the door?! Okay, this just made me laugh so hard! Oh goodness, I cannot imagine running the second half of a marathon in that humidity and heat. You are incredible for finishing that. He love love loves that trail mix, I am going to search for it next time I’m there. Thanks Corey!

Reply

My go to snacks are a chunk or two of Trader Joe’s dark chocolate (the huge bar in the red wrapper), a GoMacro or RX Bar, and a banana. After work it’s a handful or walnuts/almonds and/or a spoonful of peanut butter or sunflower nut butter. Or sometimes combine the dark chocolate with the peanut/sunflower nut butter :)

Definitely no Bachelorette here, just Survivor and Amazing Race.

Reply

We need to get into Amazing Race… that seems like a show that we would both love. Great ideas.. I love what you are snacking on. I haven’t had sunflower nut butter in a very long time, I need to get that for us to combine with that dark chocolate. I hope you are having a great day so far John and hopefully you have another run with your son soon!

Reply

I forget, is he the one that doesn’t like eggs?!

Can the food be refridgerated? I have greek yogurt, granola and blueberries in the morning. In the afternoon I have hardboiled eggs and fruit, or I have chicken salad (pre-cooked chicken, grapes, celery, mayo, curry) in a wrap. I do string cheese. I do celery with nut butter and raisins.

I love energy balls but I tend to eat too many of them :)

Reply

You have a great memory, yep.. he hates hard-boiled eggs! He is able to keep things refrigerated. Great ideas Jessey and I need to make that chicken salad in a wrap for me too.. that sounds heavenly right now. Have a great rest of your day!

Reply

My work snacks are apples, bananas, strawberries, greek yogurt, 1/2 PB or Almond butter sandwich (or on graham crackers), mixed nuts, RX Bars, chocolate milk (you can add protein powder for extra energy/calories). Now that I’ve listed these, I feel like my snacks are a little boring :)
The Super Hero muffins and breakfast cookies from RFES Cookbook are great for snacks on the go.
That lasagna looks soooo good! I haven’t tried that recipe yet. I agree with everyone else – the flu fighter chicken soup is AWESOME! The meatballs are great too! I have both cookbooks and they are the ones I use the most.
I’m so excited for your race this weekend! You got the bad run out of the way and now you know you can handle whatever the day brings! I’m predicting a new PR for you!!

Reply

Thank you so much Elizabeth and I can’t wait. I’ve been eying the breakfast cookies, definitely going to make that for him (and me). And now I need to make the meatballs next. Thanks for the help and ps how have I never thought of putting almond butter on graham crackers? Have a great day!

Reply

That lasagna sounds amazing! I really need to buy that book, it’s been on my Amazon list forever!

My go-to snack that fill me up during a long day are as follows: homemade trail mix (nuts can be pretty satisfying), banana, yogurt, roasted chickpeas (lots of protein in these). I also have been known to bring some jerky.

I’ve had a few positive split marathons, but my biggest by far was Tokyo b/c my injury crept up during the last half and there was a substantial amount of walking. It was bad. My first half I was on track for a 3:29 and I actually finished in 4:02 (my slowest ever) but heck I was just happy I finished at that point!
GL in your race this weekend – you are going to crush it!!

Reply

YES… get the book. I’m loving all of the recipes!
Oh I bet that marathon was SO painful with that injury coming in to get you. I really would love to run Tokyo someday, come do it with me again haha. So glad you are running again Annemarie! Thank you for the ideas, I really appreciate it and I want to try roasting chickpeas for me too!

Reply

Work Snack Ideas: Protein Energy balls (the little peanut butter oatmeal chocolate chip balls that you made for your grandma), banana or apple and peanut butter, or a kind bar.

Reply

THANK YOU Kaileigh… now I just need to make two batches each time of those energy balls:) . The best. Thanks so much and I hope you are having a wonderful day!

The Bachelorette is TOTALLY MY SHOW. Friends of mine from my PhD program and I are in a fantasy league together. As for this season–I really like Hannah B. As for her men–well, she seems to have a bunch of stalkers and “special snowflakes” who have a thing with treating people like outright possessions. And that’s not cool. STILL, I am happy I chose Luke P for my team, because all of his annoying drama earns me points as long as he gets a rose. ;)

As for snacks for Andrew–if he has a fridge at work, why not make a bunch of roll-ups and slice them so he can pop a slice in his mouth when he needs a snack? Something like turkey, gouda, baby spinach leaves, and smashed avocado mixed with lemon or lime juice (instead of mayo maybe) and spicy brown mustard rolled up in a whole wheat tortilla? It would balance protein, carbs, fat, and fiber–and I tend to think that keeping energy at a consistent level works very well when a person changes ‘snack’ to ‘mini-meal’ INSOFAR AS making sure what you eat balances protein/carbs/fiber/healthy fats (not necessarily insofar as mini-meals being, oh, stuff all filled on a plate–you can maintain nutrient balance with just a few bites of something). Or what about mozzarella sticks to eat alone and to be accompanied with celery sticks that get dipped in a bit of peanut butter? If he needs SHELF STABLE snacks, there is a protein bar that I love that seems to balance out nutrients nicely and doesn’t really have a lot of fake crud in it. The brand os OATMEGA (I find it at my local Kroger, often at a very good price)–the mint chocolate one reminds me of thin mint girl scout cookies (and even moreso when the bars get stashed in the fridge and eaten nice and cold…like thin mints taken straight from the freezer!!!)…

Reply

I wish I could watch The Bachelorette with you each week… wouldn’t that be fun?! Your tortilla roll idea made me drool a little.. that sounds so good right now. Off to find those OATMEGA bars too. Thanks for the help Stephanie and I’m off to go make that tortilla roll:) . GOOD LUCK IN TWO DAYS!

Reply

Baked Egg omelets are my good to meal prep. Just bake them in cupcake trays, then pop a few in a bag warm up at work. I throw in veggies, ham, cheese.
I pack yogurt drinks from Chobanni and my quest bars if I’m going to the gym after work.

Reply

Brilliant idea making them in the cupcake trays… I can make them for the kids too. Thank you so much Lauren for the help and I hope you have a great day:)

Reply

I’m a big fan of hard boiled eggs and Rx bars. ALSO I wanted to let you know that I was in Salt Lake City the other week and had Banbury Cross donuts per your rec…THANK YOU! Apple fritter was out of this world good, wouldn’t suggest that for a work snack though :)

Reply

Well this just makes my day. I am SO glad you went to Banbury Cross and now I need to get back up there for an Apple Fritter. Come back to Utah soon and let’s go for a run. Have a beautiful day and I’m going to get those Rx bars (but not the eggs for Andrew, that is one of the only foods he won’t eat and I love hard boiled eggs!).

Reply

Snacks for Andrew!
These energy bites:https://fountainavenuekitchen.com/no-bake-energy-bites/
(Check out her recipes in general–really good stuff!!!)
Also, greek yogurt with Larabar cut up and put in it, Banana with peanut butter and granola, Mini PBJ on wheat, Laughing Cow or Babybel cheese
I tend to always eat the same things, and I need to branch out more!!!

I think it’s so cool that you and Emilee have become such good friends and running buddies so quickly. I’m jealous!!!!!

Reply

I’m going to make those energy bites for Andrew and my grandma.. THANK YOU! All of your snacks sound perfect. Thank you so much Jen and come join me and Emilee! Have a fabulous rest of your day.

Reply

Almond butter and apple slices are a tasty and fairly healthy snack. I had that for a morning snack earlier!

Reply

That is one of my all-time favorite snacks too! Thanks Kimberly and I hope you are having a great day:)

Reply

I love Superhero muffins and I won’t lie, I’m kind of bummed my husband loves them too so there are fewer for me to eat. ;) I also do larabars, lots of berries (strawberry, blueberry, and blackberries) and nut thins are great crackers. Also the giant thing of cashews from Costco keeps me so full. Sprouts has these chocolate flax seed muffins (for when I’m too lazy to make anything) – they may not sound super appetizing but they are DELICIOUS and small enough to eat fairly quickly.

Reply

Bahaha I felt bad the other day thinking about that with my kids… we each only get like 2 in a batch because everyone loves them. Good call on the cashews and I need to try those muffins at sprouts. Thanks so much Tess and I hope your day is a great one so far.

Reply

This is random.. I know you’ve mentioned before an eBook subscription that you use. could you provide details for that?

Thanks! Cecilia

Reply

HEY!! I actually now get books from my library… all you need is a library card and it’s free. Thanks and have a great day Cecilia!

Reply

I liked taking frozen berries over yogurt to school with me when I was there all day. It’s super easy to put together in the morning and you just need an insulated bag and a few freezer packs to keep it cold. I think those muffins are a great idea too.

Reply

Oh he would love that… thanks Fiona! I hope you have a really great Wednesday!

Reply

I am a nurse too so I know all about those busy 12 hour shifts. I find that almonds help me a ton! I don’t eat nearly at much crap and I stay fuller longer when I bring some almonds and dark chocolate.

Reply

He loves almonds too… the other day he text me at 3 in the afternoon saying that he was going to be eating for the first time since 5:30 that morning. You guys are so busy! Sending these with him asap!

Reply

Hey hey!
Ideas for Andrew- perfect bars (so good. So filling. I recommend these to alllooot of my nurses because they often don’t have time to sit and chew their food or get enough calories during their busy day! And these bars pack in 300 calories of ingredients you can pronounce), RX bars, dates stuffed with PB and chocolate chips…Trust me, chocolate hummus and apples or bananas or strawberries, Orgain tetrapak protein shakes (the green ones without stevia- not the blue ones), the giddy up bites from RFES, or the chocolate date bars from RFCFES are wicked good (pro tip- add ground coffee to the bars. Amazing), kodiak muffin cups (have protein in them which is good and just add water and heat up in the microwave),EPIC jerky bars, drinkable siggis yogurts for on the go! Let me know if you have any questions- as a dietitian, I love this stuff :)

Holley

Reply

Thank you so much for the help Holley! We have never tried perfect bars, I’m going to pick some up. Love all of your other recommendations too. Can’t wait to try those bars. He is going to be so excited. Thanks Holley for your help and send me your dietitian tips for my running;) .

Reply

You’re so welcome! They’re super good. Definitely obsessed.

Haha yes! Feel free to DM me any questions- running and nutrition are my favoriteee. ( @fitcookienutrition on Instagram). :)

Reply

I love the Run Fast, Eat Slow cookbooks! From the first one, I really like the meatballs, the salmon and sweet potato cakes (a bit of work, but so worth it and the leftovers are great) and the flu fighter stew (for the colder months). In the second cookbook, there is an apple/carrot version of the superhero muffins that the whole family loves! And a balsamic and honey grilled chicken recipe for the grill and a veggie lovers pasta salad that I know will be big staples this summer. :)

Reply

I’m now drooling reading your favorites… going to be making them all. I hope your Wednesday is great so far Abbey!

Reply

For snacks that I eat quickly and on the go at the hospital – I especially like snacks that I 1) dont have to make cause sometimes I’m just too busy and 2) don’t have to touch as sometimes I’m eating on the go and don’t want to get germs in my mouth… – they are: Drinkable yogurt, there are some brands with extra protein – almonds – string cheese – trail mix – 1/2 sandwiches – cottage cheese cups!

Reply

I didn’t even think about getting items that he wouldn’t have to touch… THANK YOU Andrea. I hope you are having a wonderful day and thanks for the help.

Reply

SO I’m a dietitian and I bring a bunch of snacks :)

I like a carb and a protein… apple and cheese, apple and pb, carrots and hummus, trail mix (I buy it in single servings because I can’t control portions)… I also like Real food bars and kind bars…

Reply

Ellie, thank you so much for the ideas and I love hearing from dietitians! Hope you are having a great day.

Reply

I send individual snack size bags of trail mix to work with my husband. TJs sells them and I also buy them from nuts.com.

I love Hannah! And Peter is my favorite (Ben Higgins look-alike!) :)

Reply

Thanks, needed to hear this, when I take a week off I feel amazing but as I was slogging through my run today I questioned if I have the right balance of pushing myself. I think you are exactly right we train so we can feel great through the hard not through training! You are the best!?

Reply

I rubbed conditioner all over my face in the shower the other morning when I was half asleep because I thought it was my face wash. I hear you on being tired haha

Reply

I’m loving Picky Bars right now, and add an Rx Nutbutter packet or almond butter packet if I need extra with a snack. The Rx Nutbutter packs are also great to have on hand to eat alone, squeeze onto a banana or other fruit, or stir into yogurt.

I haven’t tried a Runfast Eat Slow/ Run Fast Cook Fast Eat Slow recipe that I don’t love. Some of our favorites on rotation are Superfood Soup, Meatballs (from the second book), Either chili recipe (it passes the “Texan” test), and the Oregon Berry Salad. Also. Make the PB Cups from Run Fast Cook Fast right now and keep them in your freezer. You won’t be sorry!

Reply

Dates with almond butter or pb for a snack!

Reply

I’m a big fan of any snack I can eat one-handed while typing with the other hand. My favorite is trader joe’s mini brie bites (tiny single serving wheels of brie) with almonds (especially the TJs rosemary marcona almonds). I also always have containers of TJs peanut butter-filled pretzels and some kind of trail mix, plus I keep a few protein bars in my bag because they’re a decent substitute days you really can’t eat anything else (AND you don’t have to touch them or use both hands). Other things I’ve liked are string cheese, slices of salami or pepperoni with cheese or pre-sliced apples, greek yogurt (also with almonds stirred in), apples with peanut or nut butter, individual nut butter packets by themselves, or crackers or vegetables with hummus.

Reply

Turkey trot meatballs from Run Fast Cook Fast Eat Slow are great.

Right now I am all about snack packs of almonds and an apple for a quick snack at work.

Reply

The cookie dough energy bites from pinch of yum and the no bake granola bars from fannetasticfood are some of my favorite healthy snacks to have around.

Reply

I have both of Shalene’s cookbooks but yet to make anything, but you just convinced me to make more effort with your posts!
I am so involved with the Bachelorette, and some of these guys seriously make me want to not date again – so crazy! I love Hannah though – she is a great bachelorette!

Reply

Hi! I’m a teacher so I have to pack lots of snacks for “on-the-go,” as I’m sure Andrew does as well. My favorites are: RXBars (I buy the big box from Costco to save $), Larabars, hardboiled eggs, trail mix, yogurt (and I sometimes pack a container of granola or fruit to put on it), string cheese + baby oranges, muffins with nut butter packets.

If I think of any more I’ll let you know!!! :)

Reply

A tip to make your lasagana cut nice/look pretty – make it but don’t bake it the day before. Then bake it when you are ready to eat. The night in the fridge really solidifies not only the flavors but the shape!

Reply

For filling work snacks I love Chomp sticks (turkey or beef jerky), Perfect bars, and yogurt (if I get the chance to step away to eat something). Sometimes I’ll also make portion sized baggies of nuts and raisins/any dried fruit, or Trader Joe’s peanut butter filled pretzels and stick one in my pocket.

Reply

These snacks are so good!

I love the molasses granola from Run Fast Eat Slow. We also love the meatballs from their newer cookbook and any of the soups and smoothies. I drink the beet one 2-4 times a week.

I positive splitted the hobbler half a few years ago, so not fun, I hate getting passed.

Reply

I’m a nurse and know the struggle of being hungry at work with no time to eat! I use a variety of granola bars, protein bars, and drinkable yogurts. Basically, everything has to be fast and easy to eat and handle.
