Let’s Catch Up & You Just Have to Be Okay W/It

Let’s catch up on a few things over the last two days:

*Turns out Emilee and I have a very different perspective with temperatures.  I showed up dressed for summer (and I was still sweating) and she showed up dressed for what the temperatures were outside.  I get SO hot when I am running but the second I stop I freeze and my lips turn a little purple.

IMG 3409

*6.49 miles @ 8:02 average on Tuesday and then 7.4 miles @ 8:00 average on Wednesday.

IMG 3363

*I got a haircut.  My first one in over A YEAR.  I’m going to need you guys to remind me to do things like getting my hair cut because I just forget and remember once I see my split ends are 8 inches long;).  It feels so much better now.

IMG 3371

*While I was getting my hair cut these two went out for a run together.  Skye is getting in quite the jogging stroller miles this week.

IMG 3369

*We’ve had a few soccer games and Skye no longer wants to sit on the side… she now tries to get out to the field to go kick that ball.  It doesn’t matter how many times we bring her back to us… she is determined.

IMG 3388

IMG 3524

*Andrew and I had lunch together just the two of us.  We talked about how weird it is that things are going to be changing a lot soon.  He starts work in 1.5 weeks now.  Over the last few years we’ve pretty much had lunch together every day (unless he was gone doing his labs/rotations).  I’m really going to miss our lunches together.

IMG 3374

*Today is Megan D’s birthday so we went out on Tuesday to celebrate at Cubby’s.  A salad and sweet potato fries= heaven.

IMG 3391

*Brooke pointed out her crush to me at school yesterday.  WHAT IS GOING ON AND HOW IS MY BABY THIS OLD?!

IMG 3414

*We had those Costco street tacos again because we knew we had about 4 minutes to eat dinner between activities last night and they were so so good.

IMG 3525

*We are fully ready for summer!

A random thought to share with you just in case somebody needs the reminder…

I’m starting speed work again in a few weeks!  I have a choice whether to be frustrated with how much speed I’ve lost or to be excited to work hard again on it.  I’m going to choose excitement.

It might take a little bit of time or a whole lot of time to get back to hitting the paces that I was hitting last year… but that’s just life and I’m okay with that.  I can’t compare myself to where I was last September because that is silly and going to take out the fun of the process now.  If we don’t like the training or get down about ourselves the whole time over what chapter of life/running we are in now then why do it?  Comparison is what takes the fun out of the training so I’ll just be focusing on the here and now as I incorporate speed again.  This chapter might take me somewhere completely new with running and I’m excited about that and where I am today!

IMG 3259

Don’t look back… Full steam ahead on those running goals!  The best time to start on those goals is today.

Do you usually underdress/overdress or hit the sweet spot when it comes to running in different temperatures?

-I’m the person at the starting line in shorts and a tank top no matter how cold it is but then I usually pay for it at the end when I stop and freeze.

What’s your run for today?!

How often do you get your hair cut?

What did you eat for dinner last night?  Anyone have any really great sandwich/panini combos… I’ve been really craving a good one lately!

Once a year if that when it comes to cutting my hair. But I make my husband do it because I’m too lazy to go to a salon. Haha.

This is so good to hear… I’m not alone in my once a year habit. I love that your husband can cut your hair. I need to have Andrew learn:) . I hope you have a wonderful day Kourtney!

Hi Janae! Can you write a post about to start doing speed work? I’ve done two marathons so far and now I want to increase my speed a bit but have no idea where to start with speed work. Thanks and have a happy day!!

Reply

I WOULD LOVE TO!! I’ll start working on one for next week! Great idea Taylor and I’m so so excited for you to start your speed wahoo! You are going to do awesome!

Reply

Oh man I can’t even remember the last time I cut my hair! I almost always just braid it or put it in a bun bc I never take the time to do it after I run…so i don’t even notice how long it gets! ?

For panini, my two favorite combos are Brie and peach or apricot jam, or mozzarella with pesto and fresh sliced tomatoes. Yum!!

Reply

That’s how I feel… it’s normally in a ponytail so I never notice. I NEED THOSE SANDWICHES RIGHT NOW. Getting these ingredients. Thanks Rachael! Have a great day.

I’m a once-a-year hair cutter too haha. But I always get my hair colored in an ombre, so it already has that grown out look and looks like I kind of care but am too cool to care. ;-) jk. I probably look ridiculous. Those street tacos look INSANE! Yum!!!
Speed work is such a strange thing. I’ve been training since November for shorter races (and am so excited for a break before marathon training!) and the paces I was hitting two weeks ago when it was 40 degrees out versus the paces I’m hitting now that it’s 80 degrees are just not even comparable. It takes your body so long to adapt when it comes to speed! I know my fitness is there, but my body is like, whyyyyyyyyyy. I’m excited to see your journey back into speed work after the ultra!!

Reply

You are definitely too cool to care (that’s what I’m going to tell myself too;). LET YOUR BODY ADJUST… it’s crazy how much the heat slows me down but just keep remembering that the effort is still there and training in the heat will make you so strong! Thank you Mollie and please continue to keep me updated on how you are doing!

Reply

I love your perspective on not comparing ourselves to our past selves. I really need to hear that. Thank you for reminding me YET AGAIN why I’m working so hard with running: because it’s fun and I can do hard things!!

Reply

YES YES YES… you are not alone in forgetting that every now and then! You’ve got this Tracy, you are doing awesome!

Reply

I am always underdressed because I get super hot like you

Best panini combo: Chicken, bacon, avocado, red onion, tomato, arugula. Honey mustard dressing. Yummy

Reply

Yes…. I hate being hot while running so less is more haha. Well, I need that panini right this second. Just reading about it made me drool! Have a beautiful day Mallory!

Hi Janae! I don’t think I will ever get the whole dressing for the temps things down.. I am either way overdressed or way under dressed and just like you immediately freeze! I live in MN so the 30 degree and sunny days always throw me for a loop! But nothing a warm shower, and a hot cup of decaf can’t fix afterwards :)

I have 8 miles with 8x400s at 5k pace! I am coming back after many injuries and surgeries so it seems like a long road back- but your blog always reminds me to stay in my own lane and be proud of what I am able to do today!

I get a hair cut every 4 months.. just a trim!!

I hope you have an awesome day!!! I am always tempted to get a Costco membership after your posts- but it is just my husband and I so I don’t know if we would benefit!

Reply

8 x 400s at 5k pace–> BOOM! Emily, I am so so happy YOU ARE BACK! “Stay in my own lane”… I love that! I wish you lived here and I could just pick up what you needed at Costco:) . Have a beautiful day and I hope you are getting some really sunny days. Thanks Emily.

The street tacos are a weekly meal at our house! I haven’t cut my hair in about 6 months, I noticed the ends are needing some TLC. As for dressing for runs, I struggle…I dress in layers and keep shedding. I freeze before (and after) running. My arms/hands stay cold but the rest of me is sweating within a mile.

Reply

Aren’t they the absolute best… they make dinner so easy! It’s so tricky finding the perfect balance of what to wear! Have a beautiful day Tammy and I hope you get some perfect temperatures soon.

Reply

I am like your neighbor and I usually overdress! I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve actually been underdressed for a run, haha. 3 easy miles on tap for me today!

Because I prefer my hair short, I get my hair cut every 10 weeks. If I had thick hair like you I’d probably grow it out long again, but mine is fine and curly so short works best :)

Recently we threw together sandwiches grilled in a pan on the stove with smoked deli turkey, cheese (Provolone I think?), and leftover pesto from a jar – and it was SO GOOD!!!

Reply

Ummm that sounds so so good. Would it be weird to have that sandwich for breakfast?! I hope your 3 miles today were great ones Noelle!

Reply

My Mom reminds me quite often that comparison is the thief of joy. Words to live by! I get my hair trimmed/shaped up every six weeks or so. My hair is so thin and fine that if I don’t get those regular trims it just looks awful.

Reply

YES YES YES… it sure is. It’s weird how you can go from being completely happy with your life and then once you start comparing… boom, you can be miserable. I hope you have a beautiful day Kimberly!

Reply

I’m so jealous of everyone who can go months or a year without getting a haircut! I wish that was me. I get a haircut EVERY. 4. WEEKS! I keep my hair short and I don’t have “good” hair. It is naturally curly and naturally frizzy. When I started middle school I was horrible at styling my hair and my mom was even worse with styling. I went through years looking rough and got made fun of a ton!! But that’s ok I had good friends and it didn’t bother me that much. I knew I was a daughter of Heavenly Father and I knew my worth and value. Anyways……….fast forward many many years and I’m at the hairdresser every 4 weeks for a trim and doing a hair treatment to relax the waves and tame the frizz. Also my husband and 16 yr old son keep their hair super short so they get a haircut too. It’s a family affair when we walk in the hair salon.

Reply

I am so so sorry that you went through that and good for you for knowing early on where our worth truly comes from! I love that you guys all go together and my sis has curly hair and it’s my favorite thing.. I LOVE the way curly hair looks! Have a beautiful day Betsy!

I only get my hair cut once a year, too! It grows like a weed, so I could get it cut more often, but I HATE getting it cut. I must have had some traumatic hair cuts as a kid because I would seriously rather go to the dentist than get my hair cut.
I made tacos last night, too (we use vegetarian “meat”), but instead of a taco shell, I put everything on a baked potato. It was delicious!
Since my ultra, I have been back to short, easy runs on most days. I’m still not training for anything in particular and this is just working for me right now. The endurance comes back to me way quicker than does the speed. I’ve never been as fast as you are, but I have to work HARD if I want any kind of speed. If I’m shuffling along at a 9 min pace, though, I can go forever.
Have a great day, Baron family!

Reply

Hahah the dentist over getting your hair cut… what did they do to you growing up?! I will be copying that dinner idea. I totally agree, the endurance pops back faster than the speed for sure! You rocked that ultra and keep doing what feels best for you Stacey! Have a beautiful day!

Living in the South, I’m always the one to under dress for a run. My boyfriend will go out in a sweatshirt and I’ll go out in shorts and a tank top (even in the “winter”). Sometimes I wear leggings, but I rarely use sleeves. Once I get going, I tend to feel just fine and will even sweat when it’s a bit cooler.

I did a quick 2.5 taper run this morning. I have a half marathon on Sunday so I’m just tapering off.

I get my hair cut twice a year and know exactly when to do it because my hair gets to be like five million lengths. I haven’t changed my hair cut since I was in high school. Anyone have any good hair cut suggestions?

I’m on my way to get a breakfast panini across the street from my office. I’ve been craving it all week so I am pumped to get this in my belly!

Reply

Can I come with you for that breakfast panini?! That sounds so good right now. I am JUST LIKE YOU. I haven’t changed my hair since high school either.. you are not alone. GOOD LUCK ON SUNDAY and please let me know how it goes. I am cheering big time for you!

Reply

Let me just tell you… there is NOTHING like breakfast/brunch in New Orleans. That panini hit the spot. I’ll probably be full for the rest of the day…

I’ll keep you posted in regards to Sunday. Thanks for the support :)

I’m SOOO hungry after reading this ~ha ha~ Love Skye’s little sunglasses!
I try to dress for 20 degrees warmer than the air temp, so I’ll feel good when I’m all warmed up. But that sometimes takes me awhile when it’s cold to start off. Running when it’s already warm takes out the guess work :)
I always trim my hair myself. And I do it maybe 2-3 times a year, when the ends are dry and split. Needless to say, it’s often in a twist, bun, or ponytail :D
My daughter has been somewhat of a sandwich artist these days. One of her favorite things is to add large pepperoni slices (from the deli) to her usual lunchmeat for a little change in flavors.
Enjoy your day!

Reply

Yes… that’s a great way to dress for the run. I’m going to copy that idea Corey! Good for you to trim your own hair, I want to try that! I need your daughter to come make us lunch:) . Have a wonderful day Corey!

Well I had strawberry shortcake for breakfast and a a snack!!!! I did use some Froyo and lots of berries! So so so good I want another now but I must wait!

I’m gonna swap it up for my two ingredient angel food pineapple Bundt cake. One box angel food cake (add water as the only box ingredient) instead mix one can crushed pineapple then bake as directed on the box. This is amazing chilled and topped with some whipped cream and a banana!

The weather is getting so much better here and my walk “runs” are about five miles a day but with hills sprinkled in!! Today I have another five miler planned!

I overdress typically but I’m getting better thanks to layers! I just stopped wearing Cotton running tees and wow what a difference. I’m not drenched in sweat anymore!

Your kids are adorable as always ?

Janae… serious question here.. I know you are affiliated with Brooks and I also know you are an honest person. I finally converted from my target running shoes and as a mom of three kids this is a huge investment! Love the shoes! But BOTH shoes have tears along the inside near where we lace them. Same thing happened to my husbands pair! Would you maybe pass the message along? Has this happened to you? I have pics I can share if you wanna see. No pressure at all feel free to ignore this and no hard feelings!

I get my haircut about every 2 months! There is an awesome Aveda beauty school nearby and can’t beat $10!! I only get trims so my haircuts are simple but I swear my hair grows longer faster! Plus I love supporting students. They try so hard and are always super sweets

Have a great day!!! And keep smiling!! ?

Reply

I have had the same thing happen with my Brooks launch running shoes (past three pairs). I emailed Brooks (sent pictures of all three pairs) & they offered to replace them. I love the Brooks launch & wish they’d fix the issue. I really don’t want to switch running shoes!

Reply

NOOOO TO YOUR BROOKS!! Oh and I honestly am a true brooks fan for life (believe me, I’ve gotten offers for a lot of money to switch to different companies but I NEVER will). I will absolutely send this message over. I haven’t had this happen with my launch! They will totally replace them too… have you emailed them Sydney? I will too! Such a bummer! Five miles and hills is a ton! You are doing amazing and now I want some shortcake for breakfast. Let’s get your shoes figured out! I’ve never had this problem in 8 years of using them!

Reply

I didn’t email them! I wasn’t sure what to do! I am totally a brooks fan for life too! I never realized shoes could be so comfortable!!! Is there someone you would recommend I email? I hate to complain ?

Feel free to email me directly! I’m guessing you have my email from these replies? No hurry at ALL! I appreciate your concern!!! Please please don’t feel pressure to get back to me quick!!! You have a family and kids and so many other things!! Whenever you have time is much appreciated!

Reply

Oh I am SO glad. I would just email customer service! That’s what they are there for and THEY want to improve their shoes more than anything so sending any helpful information about the problems is so needed!

I LOVE that quote about not looking back! I cut my hair short so now I have to go about every 6 weeks! It is so funny that once I go short, if it gets just the tiniest bit long, I am saying “my hair is so long!” Even though it is about 3 inches long :)

Great pictures today (as always). I especially like the sweet picture of Brooke with her medal.

Reply

Hey girl! Teach me to take better care of my hair:) . Thanks Amanda! I hope you have a great weekend soon filled with hikes with your friends and dog!

I never seem to get my running gear right in the fall through spring; I’m either under dressed or overdressed so lately I’ve been wearing layers and as long as I stay close to home, it works like a charm! Monday for example, i started in gloves and long sleeves but when I decided to do speed work I had to shed my long sleeves for a tank. I was really quick to put all the layers back on during cool down though! Today, low 40’s, 5 easy miles, and I had the cold sweat thing going on. It was too cold to shed my sleeves and gloves but I was sweating which kept me cool. So strange!
I finally found a length I like (just below shoulders) so I’m being forced to cut my hair more than every 6-12 months. I love going to the salon but I haven’t been in at least 6 years so I cut my hair at home and use my kids reactions as a guide to see if I cut it ok!
Dinner last night was TJ’s mandarin chicken and rice :) When my husband chooses the dinners, he always goes the easy route. Those meals are the best meals for our busy busy life so no complaints here! I really need to get to Costco to try their tacos!
Have a great day!

Reply

Wait, so you didn’t go into the workout knowing you were going to do speed?! That is hard core. I feel like I need to mentally prep myself for a while before a speed workout ha. Way to go! Yay for finding the perfect length. We love that chicken so much. Let me know if you like the tacos. Have a beautiful day Jenny!

I just scheduled to get my hair trimmed this week too! I’m trying to grow it out so I haven’t had it cut in a year now, but i have very curly/wavy hair so it gets super tangled and messy when it gets long or I neglect it… so i just need them to kind of make it more manageable again. I’m going to a salon school because its only $12 !! and in my experience the students are always so excited to get to practice on you, they’re freaking meticulous because they’re learning, and I dont care so much about my hair so why not!

ps i’ve noticed you rocking the lululemon long sleeve swiftly a lot lately in new colors ;) I bought one a couple months ago after seeing yours and i want all the colors too! maybe my favorite shirt i own.

i cant believe the kids are getting crushes now! and more surprisingly that they’re telling you! hahaha thats awesome how you’ve created such an open relationship with them, i never would have told my parents ;)

Reply

AMEN–> It’s like my daily shirt now haha! I love it so much! Hahah I’m not sure why they tell me because I think I’m kind of embarrassing in how I react so excited haha! $12, that is AWESOME! I don’t care a lot about my hair either… I get you! Have a fabulous day Krista!

Reply

This cracked me up. I was the only one that showed up for run class in a long sleeve shirt and a hat last night. Granted it was cloudy and breezy most of the day so I thought I was good. WRONG. I ended up running in a sports bra and still sweat bullets. HAHA I always over dress! I am always the last to shed a layer:-)

Reply

Haha you are not alone! I’m glad you had a great run class yesterday… I want to come! Have a beautiful Thursday Karen!

Reply

Today is rest day! I’ve been trying to take those more seriously recently to avoid injury.

My favorite panini is jarlsberg or Swiss cheese, shaved asparagus (I use a vegetable peeler to make thin strips) and arugula! It’s super tasty.

Reply

I overdress and then regret it!!

Love what you say about focusing on where we are in workouts–my legs have felt SO sore this and they hurt when I run! I’ve pushed through but I’ve had to walk and stretch between miles–my hamstrings are painfully tight for some reason. Which is so frustrating when I felt great last week! BUT hopefully it just means I am getting those bad workouts out of the way and maybe I need to spend even more time stretching and strengthening.

Dinner last night was yummy but I need to hit the store–yogurt, apple/peanut butter, and popcorn.

Reply

I ran in long sleeves and used my ear warmers today haha. But if I’m running in the evening or any other time of day that the sun is up, then shorts and a tank top does the trick.

Honey mustard, grilled chicken, your favorite cheese (I like smoked Gouda on it) and tomatoes.

Reply

A GREAT panini recipe:
Thinly slice and roast some veggies you like. I recommend tomatoes, bell peppers, zucchini
While they are cooking, spread some goat cheese and pesto onto sourdough or whole wheat bread, you can also add a little smashed avocado if you like or entirely replace the goat cheese with it.
Pull the veggies out when they are done and make a sandwich. Then toast in a frying pan to your desired level of crispiness :)

Reply

I usually overdress for runs…..but I am working on my dressing skills!

Today’s run is somewhere between 8 and 10 miles after work, depending on the humidity and how long I can stand it!

And there is a restaurant in Nashville that I love that has a sandwich called “Love at First Bite”….it has Turkey, Bacon, Cheddar, Alfalfa Sprouts, Avocado, Honey Mustard, on Toasted Sourdough……..it lives up to it’s name. But I have yet to try and recreate it at home, but one day I will! Let me know if you try it!

Reply

I’m with you on under-dressing. My morning run buddy gets confused. But seriously- who wears a jacket running when it’s above 20? Too weird.

3 mile easy run today. I’m running Mt. Charleston on Saturday, so taper!!!

Haircut- every 8 weeks because I cannot stand how grey I’m getting.

I’d suggest you remember the awesomeness that is a Monte Cristo sandwich. French toast/ham and cheese, w/ jam. Yes please.

Reply

I’m also a once or twice a year haircut girl. But I just got my hair chopped! 11 inches. To donate to locks for love. So it be hard to get used to this short hair now but I know it will go and I can still make a baby ponytail which is what was most important to me!

Reply

Could you please share how you tell your stylist to cut your hair? I never use the right lingo and your hair always looks good :) I want to have more of a side bang/ swoop to frame my face but somehow I always end up with angles so I’m wondering if I use the wrong terms

Reply

Hey Emily!! Oh I wish I had a way to explain it… I just told her to give me a trim! I think my bangs/swoop are just shorter than the rest of my hair because they are damaged. I could send you an email with a picture of the swoopiness and you could take that?!

Reply

Love your attitude towards speed work – you’ve inspired me to have a better attitude toward it :) Love that Brooke is enjoying cross country, too! My daughter prefers basketball and volleyball, but I can’t complain because I was never good at either of the sports she’s good at – sometimes it’s funny how that works out :)

I also underdress typically – Colorado weather is constantly changing and I’d rather be a little cold than too hot (I sweat enough, ha!).

I ran a very hill-y 5 miles this morning – is it weird that I’d rather run hills than do speed work?

Am very much like you – about twice a year for hair cuts . . . oops.

I had a veggie smoothie and some peanut butter and dark chocolate chips. It was amazing.

Reply

I understand the speed work thing!!! As I’ve been working on short speed/5ks this spring, I’m rocking the speed and LOVING it. It will be hard to start over after I take a break from this. BUT, you’re right. Life and the run are a rollercoaster, and you can’t fight where they take you sometimes. New starts can be exciting :)

My run for today is 6 easy, which I will be taking EASY because I have speed work tomorrow!!!! When you have speedwork in the schedule, it definitely makes it “easy” to take the easy days EASY! :)

I get my hair trimmed and highlighted every 6 weeks. It’s the reason I can’t afford fake lashes, too. ha ha Being blonde isn’t cheap!!!!

And, my fav sandwich right now is a Caprese—–flatbread/tomatoes/fresh mozzarella cheese/spinach/pesto. So good!!!!

Reply

Everything is always ebbing and flowing in running and life. Sometimes we are at our fastest, our longest, best shape etc. And sometimes when we are not at those we are reconnecting with friends, getting a promotion at work, travelling the world, perfecting another hobby……..
To require the best out of all areas at all times would be exhausting and then none of them would be at their best.
You have a great attitude. Have fun finding that speed. I know you love the challenge!

Reply

Today is a strength day for me! This weather makes me want to run everyday, but my knees say nope! I too forget to get my haircut. When I do, I make sure I go visit a friend right after to have evidence that my hair does exist outside a ponytail or mom bun ?

I get my haircut every six weeks like clockwork. As a matter of fact, I have an appointment today!
My dinner last night was a nice, big salad – with just hardboiled egg, turkey pepperoni, mozzerella cheese, and Light Olive Garden dressing (YUM).
My favorite grilled sandwich lately is a grilled cheese with bacon and we use the Shammy garlic butter (from Sam’s) – so delish!

I haven’t had my hair cut or trimmed since before Christmas. It went from feeling okay to I-need-it-cut-now this week. My girl quit so now I have to find a new girl and it feels overwhelming and scary!!

That quote – Don’t look back. You’re not going that way – was my senior year quote! Also – No matter where you go, there you are :)

Do a caprese panini on focaccia with tomatoes, mozzarella, olive oil, balsamic, pesto, prosciutto. Or any of that combo, that’s what I ate daily when I lived in Italy. Oh dang now I want one!
