Lots of Damage, Back on the Trails & Your Homework.

I think this might be my favorite running (power hiking) selfie ever now;). There probably won’t be another running selfie from me for another week or so.  I will keep on enjoying sleeping in until the kids wake up each morning.

My body feels 100% back to normal now (my ankle was freaking me out those first two days) but I know that there is still damage that was done last Saturday that I cannot feel right now.  That damage still needs the recovery from running so the miles can wait as long as I need them to.

I won’t be back to the trails for a little while but Andrew is and he is thrilled about it.  One of his best friends from high school (when he lived in St. George) just moved to our area and he loves mountain biking too.  I’m thrilled that they will get to bike often together now.

Crazy hair day at school!  I picked up Knox from school yesterday and he had a green mohawk… his mom rocked it!

My sister called me to join her for bootcamp.  It was upper body day so I joined her and then went on a short walk with the gang afterwards.

IMG 9977

The only chafing mark post-race that I have.  It does not look like much but that spot was bugging me so bad on race day (on both arms).  My vest was fabulous but I just had never worn it with a tank top and I think that was my problem on race day.  I will continue to use this vest but probably just always have short sleeves or long sleeves on when I use it.

Brooke walked into the lunchroom and I was sitting there to surprise her with her favorite meal.  We ate lunch together.  I kind of want to do this every day now.

We watched Brooke’s first soccer game!

Brooke blocked every shot while she was goalie!

My pacer (Austin) shared this video with me.  I loved it so I wanted to share it with you too!

Kissing the Rock || presented by Ultimate Direction from Matt Trappe Photo & Film on Vimeo.

PS I had a few people ask me about how I found my pacer and why I chose to use one!  I’ve known Austin for about 13 years.  I’ve followed his ultra adventures and I’ve always been inspired by them.  When Andrew switched over to a different race distance I switched up my goals a bit and I asked Austin to pace me to my new goals and he was happy to join me.  Having a pacer was so important for me… He helped me to think more positive, to fuel/hydrate when my brain was tired, I needed the motivation when I was tired and it was so nice to not be running alone anymore.  I’m sure there are many many people that do not use pacers for 50 milers but for me, it made the whole experience that much better.  I will continue to use one in the future too!

This meme is a little bit too real for me;)

Your homework assignment for this week:  My running buddy told me about how you can sign up for the Menchie’s app and get $5 of froyo free when you do… Andrew and I both signed up which meant $10 free:

Anybody reading enjoy mountain biking too?  Where are some of your favorite places to go?

How much time do you usually take off after a race?  How does it differ with different race distances?

Those of you that enjoy frozen yogurt… Where is your favorite place to get it?

Chafing… where does that happen most often for you?

Brooke and Knox’s crazy hair styles are awesome!! I love Menchie’s too- they always have good deals! We went to one in CA during our Christmas family trip and they had unlimited for $5 each cup- we filled those with so many toppings, we couldn’t even eat it all!

Reply

Thanks so much Mariah… unlimited for $5?! We would be in trouble if they did that offer at ours hahah. I hope your Thursday is a really great one!

I used to chafe SO bad. I have been using Body Glide For Her and it helps SO much. I have scars from the chafing – it was miserable.

Your race experience made me excited for my 50k in November…I’m also super nervous! Thanks for sharing your life, lady. It’s fun to tag along.

I always heard you should take a day off for every mile the race was. Short races I never make it that long for recovery unless I get injured….maybe that’s why I get injured haha. But I usually just wait until I feel back to normal again.

And now I know what I’m doing after the temple tonight :) froyo, I’m coming for you.

Reply

Oh yay!! Which temple are you going to?!

Reply

Provo. Hopefully it’s not too busy. And hopefully our babysitter doesn’t fall through

Reply

Oh yay!!! I am hoping you get to go for sure!

A few things –> 1. Brooke, I can spot Panda Express from anywhere….yum!! We have similar tastes in foods;) 2. That G.H. Cretors cheddar and caramel popcorn mix….YUM again. I love the mix of salty and sweet its so yummy.

You are killing it with burn bootcamp. My last half cycle I added in body weight strength stuff like legs day with lunges, squats, etc., core day with planks, bicycle kicks, etc. but I really want to add in more other strength stuff. I’ve been intimidated to join like a cross fit gym or something but I know my body needs the strength!!

I’ve now learned my body needs 2 weeks recovery after racing a long race….one week can be “off” and the other recovery runs at like < 130 HR super slow just for some active recovery. Even when I felt great after a race…skipping the second week of active recovery led me to injury…#currentsituation

I would definitely encourage you to give your body the rest it deserves after building for so long.

Have a great day, Janae!!

Isn’t that popcorn the absolute best?! Do you guys have a Burn close by? I’m addicted to it now (and I HATE STRENGTH TRAINING with a passion normally ha). I’m excited to see if it helps my running:) Seriously… our bodies need a break after so much work! I hope your injury is 100% better asap!

Reply

OH MY GOSH janae. I was like nope no burn in our area….then I was like well let me google it….there is literally one (no exaggeration) right next door to my condo. HAHAH. A 2 min walk max.. :) So maybe this is a sign I should check that out! Thanks!!!

Reply

NO WAY!!! IT’S A SIGN!! Ours does the first 14 days free so you can try it out, I hope yours does too!

Whoa! That crazy hair–nailed it! The kids look awesome and probably had so much fun :) Did you see the photo on social media of the girl with an Ariel doll lying on top of her head, and a fishbone braid spray painted bright green to make the mermaid tail? I don’t know if i explained that right, but it looked so cool.
I really wish our county school policy would allow parents to join kids for lunch. They are always eager for volunteers and appreciate that very much, but only allow school-day visits for assisting the teacher or group of kids. Sometimes I think I should randomly pick up my kids for a lunch outing, and pretend they were at an appointment during lunchtime ;)
I think elastic is the source of most chafing for me. I haven’t worn a hydration pack in awhile, but the straps can rub my shoulders/underarms, and also the middle of my back sometimes, if it slips around too much.
Hope you have a great day!

Reply

Okay, I saw a girl at Brooke’s school with a very similar Ariel set-up… it was AMAZING!! Oh you should totally do that with your kids. That was my problem.. it was bouncing around a ton for some reason. Thanks Corey, you too!

I like to go to Yogurtland or Menchies for fro-yo. I always get a mix of the tart/fruity yogurt and then do cheesecake bites, strawberries, the popping boba, graham cracker crumbs, and then a little squirt of hot fudge! Also I was eating a salad yesterday and it made me think of you! Idk if you have ever had a salad from The Habit but they are SO good. The power foods is my favorite. The chicken they put on the salads is tender and yummy not rubbery and scary like some other places. If they don’t have The Habit up north you will have to come try it next time you are in St. George!

Reply

And now I need you to make me your fro-yo combo. That sounds so good right now. AHHHH we have a Habit that is not too far away so I will go asap to get the power foods salad. Thank you, I’m always looking for new delicious salads. I hope you have a great day (and I’m guessing you live in St. George? My brother moves there in two months and I cannot wait)! Thanks Ehrin!

Totally agree………….Knox’s mom nailed the green!!!

YES!!! I hope you are having a great day Betsy:)

Apparently there is no Menchie’s in Western, NY because I have never heard of it :(
I used to LOVE The Licker Store when I lived in New Hampshire. I think it went out of business years ago, but I would get a fun flavor of froyo with an enormous amount of chocolate candy on top. Yum.
I have never used a pacer, but know many people swear by them. I think it would actually be really fun to be a pacer some time.
I usually take a day or two off after shorter races, and at least a week off after marathon or more. You’re absolutely right that we can’t see or even feel all the damage done, but it’s definitely there.
Have a great day, Janae!

Reply

Wait, so you didn’t have a pacer for your 100 miler!?! I’m even MORE IN AWE by you. I cannot even imagine. Stacey, you are so crazy strong. Come pace me for a future ultra and I need that cup of froyo right now. You too!

Chris just bought a new Mt. Bike yesterday. Looks like you guys should move in for a week this summer. Boys can bike, girls can run and nap, and all (adults and kids) can eat amazing food!

Usually a week off no questions asked, and then I just listen to my body. I go for a walk, it it falls in and out of a jog, fine, but at any point it feels like my mind is trying mute what my body is telling me, then walk back to the walk it is. (My mind is definitely the bossy controlling one of the 2.)

That sounds like the absolute perfect week. We are in!!! I like your recovery method… that sounds like what I’ll be doing this time too. Have a fabulous day Erica!

I either need to stop typing these on my phone or need coffee. Wowsers on all the typos.
Have a great day, and if you need a physical and mental challenge, just order papa Murphy’s with olives for lunch. ;)

Reply

BAHAHA this made me laugh so hard! I do not have the mental strength to do that… no matter how much I trained for it;)

Reply

You are amazing for doing 50 miles!! I have LOVED reading about your training.
I just did a marathon a few weeks ago and took a solid 2 weeks off. When I started running this past weekend I had pains everywhere, but had no pains during the race!! It was awful! So I really backed down on miles and ran Tuesday pain free! YAY! So ready for Spring runs in sunshine and shorts :) Have a great day!

Reply

CONGRATS TO YOU TRACY on your marathon a few weeks ago. Yep, those pains pop up after and you were so smart to back off a bit again. Thank you so much Tracy and keep on enjoying those pain free runs!

Pinkberry is definitely my favorite. :-) I love how tart the original is! So good with chocolate chips and strawberries. I don’t live by a Pinkberry so I only get it on vacation, which makes it extra fun.

Funny you ask about chafing–I NEVER had chafing problems until this week! Very minor ones but I’m not entirely sure what to do since I’ve never had them before–I have a 10-miler coming up and I want to be prepared! I am still amazed you ran 50 . . . 10 seems daunting to me!

P.S. I went on a 6-mile run this week! That’s the farthest I’ve run since probably May, and I was feeling really nervous about this race, since I was hitting about 4 miles on my runs since injury recovery and PT. This run I took about a minute slower/mile, and when I hit six miles I felt done but I still felt good. Mentally I feel so much better about this race! Excited for it.

Reply

I have only had Pinkberry a few times and each time I absolutely loved it. So so so good. Boo to the chafing this week and girl, you are going to rock your 10 miler. Huge congrats on your 5 miler this week, you have come so far since your injury. Keep enjoying the journey and you better let me know how the ten miler goes!

Reply

Oh man, I can only imagine how bad that chafe spot hurt (showers post races are either the absolute worst or the most amazing feeling in the world!). I had major chafing from my pack + tank on my chest that i could feel early on in my last marathon but did nothing about it. By the time I was done it was so painful! I’m not sure how I didn’t scar from it.
I tried riding my bike on trails once. It was Thanksgiving, raining, chilly and such hard work! I would much rather run on trails in those conditions than ride a bike! I’m really amazed by anyone who mountain bikes/rides on trails. They have superpowers in my eyes!
I had no idea about the Menchies app …. I need to sign up for ASAP because I take my boys about 1/month up until summer and then we go about every week. Thanks for the tip!
Have a great day and enjoy your recovery days!!

Reply

Haha yes the shower afterwards hurt so so bad. Oh you had that chafing at the beginning of your marathon, OUCH! I agree with you on mountain biking, it kills me. Yes, get the app and enjoy. Thanks Jenny!

Reply

Congratulations on your incredible race! And a possibly useful tip: I put moleskin on the areas of my pack and inside my shoes where I may chafe (-: it works really well.

Reply

That is BRILLIANT! I will absolutely try that next time. Thanks Rachelle!

Brooke’s hair!! That was amazing! I have two boys and I’m glad i didn’t have a girl and have to learn how to fix hair because I’m not good at it!
And Brooke gets to play soccer with that backdrop!! Aaaaamazing beauty in your town.

Reply

Hahah I am not very good at doing Knox’s hair so I need help with that! Thank you Mary, come visit and I’ll take you for a run and some good food. I hope you are having a great day!

Reply

Brooke’s hair looked so cute! Bet that took forever.

Chafing is the worst. I used a vest for my race Saturday that I used for all of training and was fine. Thought it was all good until i hopped in the shower and my back started stinging. Chafed right where the bottom of the vest landed, where i can’t see or reach on my back. Not entirely sure how to prevent that going forward since I had a shirt and on under my vest.

Reply

Haha it definitely did! Oh that post-chafing shower sting hurts SO SO BAD… LAME!!

I’ve had chafing spots after every run longer than 8 miles- and it’s always in my arm pits… I just cannot figure out why. For shorter runs, I never get them…and I wear the same things on both types of run. This past 10 mile run I did, I had on my upper arm pit and the lower arm pit. When your chafing goes away, does it leave marks on you? It seems like I have these bruises (but not really bruises but just after-chafing spots).

Reply

Oh that is so so painful! Have you tried dove deodorant or anti-chafing creams? I never really chafe over and over again in the same place each time and just all over in random places. I am guessing having it happen in the same place over and over again would definitely leave spots! Good luck with this. Anyone have any tips?

Reply

It’s the repetitive movement – longer distance adds up (5000 arm swings -> 10000 arm swings…). Maybe try some kindof lubricant (body glide or the stick deodorant), but if it’s always bad in the same places you could try tape (fixomull or hypafix).

Reply

We just got a Menchie’s so thank you for the tip! Yay!

Mountain biking scares me, like not in a good way. I’m not coordinated at all. I mean I broke my ankle while running because I turned to look behind me and didn’t pay enough attention to my feet. I can’t even imagine what I would do on a bike on a mountain, ha!

I usually try and get some shake out runs in after races, but nothing hard or strenuous. I try and stick to taking off the amount of miles in days, so 13ish days for a half. I don’t completely take them off, just nothing hard.

I’m not super picky about froyo, but I do LOVE when they include allergies and ingredients, which Menchie’s and Yogurt Land does.

Chafing is the worst!! I’ve had it in the weirdest sport, but for some reason my under arms seem to get it the most often.

Reply

The background scenery from your soccer pics is amazing! What a beautiful part of the world you live in.

Reply

That first picture of you is AAAAAAMAZING. Frame that SOB.

I will let Ross know Andrew is cheating on him. It’s fine.

I always chafe at the very tippy top of my inner thighs.

Putting gummy candy of any kind in your ice cream/fro yo is something a psychopath would do.

Reply

I had horrible chafing once when I raced in a tank top (I think the arm holes were lower than what I was used to) so now I stick to tops with sleeves 100%. And it’s not really chafing, but I’ve had the drawstring on capris get wedged into my bellybutton on a long race and whoa the pain afterward was unreal.

I love mountain biking! We loved visiting Park City, the trails there are so beautiful and buffed out. Sun Valley is a favorite too and we are hoping to ride in CO this summer. My husband is super into it like Andrew, and we ride the mellower cross country trails together, and then he has his buddies to ride the super technical stuff with. Win win.

Brooke’s soccer field has literally the best views!

I just want to pop in and say the backdrop of your soccer pics are ridiculously beautiful! Those mountains!! My first time to Utah was this last summer and it was so amazing!! Have a great day :)

that first photo is PERFECTION!! and once again, absolutely incredible amazing job girl! seriously, a huge way to go! now keep on enjoying this bit of rest :)
also this lulu long sleeve shirts are the BEST. i have like 4 of them.

Reply

Totally depends on how hard I raced, but I’d say I usually take about 5-6 days fully off running (I’ll swim instead), and then I’ll gradually pickup miles again if things are feeling okay but still swim a ton and run minimally!

Question for you …
Boston is around the corner and my body is FRIED. I hit a pretty bad state of burnout a few weeks ago and I just really want to go into race day feeling fresh. I did a 21-miler last weekend that went well but I ran here in Chicago instead of venturing out in the burbs to run hills. We’re supposed to do another 18 miles this weekend out in the suburbs before starting the taper but do you think I’d be okay starting the taper now? I’ve done a 21 miler, 2 19s, 2 18s, and a bunch of 15s/16s. I’ve also kept up with all my speed work. Would love your honest opinion and expertise :)

Also – Yogurtland is the bomb.com and they closed all the ones in Chicago and it’s so depressing!

Reply

Oh girl… I would absolutely start the taper now!!!!! You’ve done the work that you need to do and the most beneficial thing for you and your body at this point is rest! Cheering for YOU!

Reply

Thank you!!! I needed to hear that :) Happy Friday and hope you have a GREAT weekend! Keep celebrating and rest up!!
