15 Things Since We Last Caught Up.

It’s been a few days since I’ve filled you in on some of the things that we’ve been up to around here:

1.  Sunday= couch all day and Monday I got out with the Skyester for a few errands.  On Monday we also took around things to people that helped us on race day and made it to lunch with some friends.  A few hours after lunch my stomach felt sooooo off.  I figured it was from the craziness of the ultra but then I started shaking a bit too.  At about this point some of the girls that I had lunch with texted saying that they were having the same symptoms.  FOOD POISONING.  It wasn’t the most extreme case at all of food poisoning but yeah… I’ll be okay never eating there again (a local taco place).

2.  His diploma arrived, his NCLEX is scheduled for next Friday and he has already had an interview at the hospital he really wants to be working at.  Andrew. Is. Killing. It.

IMG 9852

3.  My R8 Roll Recovery hurts so bad but it is helping to get my muscles ready for action again.   The first two days I was crazy sore but I’m actually feeling like I am bouncing back faster than road races… that soft dirt/mud must be the answer.

IMG 9866

4.  We finally went out for my mom’s birthday lunch.  On her birthday I was sick so we pushed it to yesterday instead.

IMG 9877

5.  The steak salad + sweet potato fries at Cubby’s were something else and I was very thankful to not get food poisoning from this salad:)

IMG 9872

6.  I think I finally satisfied my need for salt and finally felt like something sweet again.  I picked up one of my favorite treats to celebrate the 50 miler.  Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory chocolate covered cinnamon bears.

IMG 9869

7.  From 2:00-2:48 pm yesterday Skye crawled in and out of this plastic container on repeat.  It was quite entertaining.

IMG 9871

8.  Soccer season is here which means between Brooke and Knox we have about 6 games/practices a week now.

IMG 9893 2

9.   Brooke’s first game is tonight!

IMG 9886

10.  Skye was very invested in the game.

IMG 9885

11.  We went out to get some more errands done.  On Saturday I thought I would never wear shoes again but I am!

IMG 9913

12.  Brooke had to get some new running shoes because cross-country starts soon.

IMG 9897

13.  We drove up some of the hills that I used dozens of times during my training for my ultra.  Being in the car driving up them made me tired;)

IMG 9943

14.  Life in Pieces (one of our favorite shows ever) season 3 just came on Hulu so that is what our evenings have consisted of.

15.  Judging by my sock in the below picture… I STILL kick the inside of my leg when I run.  I have done this for about 20 years now… it’s not with every stride but throughout a run it happens.  I think it means I need more strength training.

Ever been food poisoned from a restaurant before?  Did you ever go back and eat there again?

-I still can’t go back to Papa Murphy’s after I was food poisoned there when I was 9.

Chocolate covered cinnamon bears… terrible or a delicious idea?

Anyone else kick the insides of their legs when they run?

-I just kick my right leg, not my left.

What are your favorite summer running socks?

Got food posioning from Olive Garden and while I was pregnant too! Haven’t been back since.

Reply

NOOOOOO we love the Olive Garden. I cannot imagine having food poisoning while pregnant! NOOOOOOOOOO

Reply

Oh my goodness! I literally can only remember having food poisoning once and it was this past Fall for about 36 hours. It was the most awful thing I have experienced as far as sickness goes…and was also papa Murphy’s!? So crazy. Glad it was only brief for you this time around from the tacos. Also happy you are recovering so well! Love ya!

Reply

OKAY, 36 hours… that is terrible. Papa Murphy’s is killing us!!! Thanks Julia and love YOU. I am just so excited for your pregnancy!

Reply

I kick my right ankle :( I constantly have bruises on it. hahaha

Reply

What’s our deal?! I hope that you have a really great day Colleen!

Reply

Yes! I kick my legs. I am excited for Knox’s and Brooke’s soccer season because I remember the beautiful pictures of the fields from last year. Ha! Keep them coming please :)

Reply

Oh I totally will… the best views. I hope your day is a great one Amanda!

Reply

Hot Dog on a Stick when I was probably 7 or 8. Never again. And a peanut butter cup from a chocolate shop in Big Bear, CA. Can never eat a PB Cup again.
Chocolate covered gummies are delicious!
I love the feetures elite socks for the summer!
Glad your recovery is going well!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Reply

A pb cu!?!?! MOLLIE… that is terrible! Oh Feetures have awesome summer socks. Thanks Mollie, I hope you have a great day and I am sure you had a killer run this morning.

Reply

I love chocolate and cinnamon but I’m not sure I’d like chocolate covered cinnamon bears.

I recently tried balega socks and I’m in love. I bought a pair of ultra lights to try for summer, I haven’t run in them yet but I’ve tried them on and I’m pretty sure I’ll love them too!!

Reply

I think you need to try them… they are surprisingly so good:) . I LOVE BALEGA TOO! Have a fabulous day Lisa.

WAY TO GO, ANDREW!!!!

Food poisoning is AWFUL. It took me years to be able to eat chicken salad after I got it once from Central Market, and I still don’t eat it very often. And I’m an inside leg kicker, too. I mainly kick my left leg, but there will often be marks on both legs, especially if I run through mud or dirt, and I sometimes get bruises from doing so, too.

My sister gets in town tonight, and we start the trek back to Texas tomorrow! I CANNOT WAIT!!!! :)

Reply

Thanks so much Natalie! What is it with our inside leg kicking. AHHHHH TRAVEL SAFE. I am thrilled for you girl!

Reply

I’ve gotten food poisoning twice, both at really fancy restaurants! Once was in Italy, and I’m pretty sure the poached egg did it. Ironically, I bake a lot and have eaten loads of cookie dough and cake batter with raw eggs while ‘taste-testing’ and I have never once gotten sick from an egg that way.

Reply

Oh that is crazy that both places were at really nice restaurants. So crazy!! Keep enjoying the cookie dough:) . Have a great day Emily!

After a 24 mile run a few years ago we went to a local burger spot and got a huge delicious burger …few hours later I was sick as a dog and it was terrible for days. I will NEVER eat there again and never eat a burger with a fried egg on top either!

Reply

No. No. No. You had food poisoning right after running 24 miles. I hope that you can still eat burgers from other places after a long run because those are the best (minus the egg). Have a great day Donna!

Reply

My husband and I think we got food poisoning this weekend. Sunday was horrible and by Monday I felt better but empty and weak. We ate a different a different lunch than our boys but everything else was the same Saturday and they were fine. I really need to try to Cubby’s. Looks so good!

Reply

NOOOOO I am so so sorry that you both were sick… that’s really hard when both are knocked down. I hope you get to cubby’s soon. Have a great day Angie!

Reply

Glad to read that you are starting to bounce back! I can’t even imagine how your legs must feel! I’m amazed at some of the runners I follow on Instagram who do half marathons or marathons every weekend… HOW?! Makes me tired to even think about it!
I got food poisoning TWICE from Pizza Ranch… the first time I avoided the place for like a year. Someone talked me into going again… and we both ended up sick. So needless to say, I will NOT be giving it another chance. The food isn’t even that good there so I’m not sure how I was convinced to go back.
It’s supposed to be 60 degrees when I get off work today… I am counting down the hours until I can get outside and run in that beautiful temperature!

Reply

Thanks so much Rhiannon. It’s crazy how my body is bouncing back from this. OH… twice. NOOOOOO!! Never again:) . Oh enjoy every second outside later on today. Have a great day at work!

Reply

I kick the side of my leg sometimes too! But Lower down by my ankle.

Food poisoning is the worst. I’m convinced that’s what made me have anxiety about getting sick . It was so bad when I had it.

Reply

It’s so weird! I have that anxiety now too… I’ll probably be afraid to eat out for a while ha. I hope you have a wonderful day Jenny and we made it to gorgeous weather.

Reply

I kick my legs too when running! I’m not really sure how to stop though haha… it doesn’t hurt, but I do get muddy.

Reply

YESSSS well, you are not alone! If you figure out how to fix it, let me know. Have a great day Mariah!

Reply

I’m amazed that you were out and about early in the week, after running that far. Shows how strong you were going into it :)
And how cool is that for Andrew? Getting the diploma and job interview make it so real!
Knock wood, I’ve never been food poisoned. But I had undercooked chicken from a fast food place when I was a kid, and I never went back. It was more a texture thing than a health problem, thank goodness.
I’ll save all the cinnamon bears for you. It doesn’t sound awful, just not tempting.
Soccer and cross country sound so fun! I love the shoes Brooke is trying on. Wonder if they come in my size :)
Have a great day!

Reply

Thank you so so much Corey… it’s crazy how fast my body feels like it is recovering. I was not expecting this. Hahah I wanted to twin her with those shoes too. Have a fabulous day and I am so glad you were okay after that undercooked chicken!

Reply

Congratulations to Andrew!! And glad to hear you’re better able to get around after your ultra!

Reply

Thank you so so much Tori! I hope you have a great day today.

Reply

Ugh so sorry about the food poisoning! Hope it has passed…And go Andrew on getting that interview!

I have been poisoned in the past and I never went back… but it hasn’t happened in a long time. There is a rating here on sanitation in the kitchen and dining area and they can get an A B C so we just make sure the rating is an A. It has worked so far!

Yes I kick the insides of both my legs! I try not to, but it happens-

Favorite summer running socks: I love my la sportiva running (athletic?) socks. I just got thin darn tough running socks but not sure how they hold up and how my feet feel in them in summer temps yet. In cold temps they’re ok!

Reply

Thank you so so much! Good call just hitting up the A spots. HUGE CONGRATS ON YOUR NYC HALF. Can I come next year and do that with you?! Thank you and have a wonderful Wednesday!

Reply

Yes you must! it’s such a good race! It is hard (holy hills) like the nyc marathon, and scenic too – but it is so fun to just get after it with all these people running with you. A guy running with us was cheering us as we ran up the Manhattan bridge (as there were no spectators to cheer us on). Definitely think that Runners have resilience! And there were so many funny awesome signs again from the crowd as well as loud cheers and music. So great!

Reply

Papa Murphy’s, me too. Mine was more of that mild case you talk about, but whenever my mom suggests papa murphy’s for a family get together I am like, please no.
Taco bell is a no go to. But I think it would be at this point in my life anyway.

Hope you keep feeling better and better everyday.

Reply

NOOOOO WAY!! Oh that is crazy. I’ll never be able to eat there again. Andrew is sad about your Taco Bell experience too. Thanks girl and I hope you have a fabulous day!

Reply

Hey Janae! Food poisoning is the work so I’m sorry you had to deal with that but glad you got over it quick.

I’m VERY interested to try these chocolate covered cinnamon bears but where…….do I find them……

I kick the inside of my legs when I run and my ART doctor basically said it’s because my feet are almost running in a straight line rather than under my hips when I run and that is caused by lack of glutei activation. If you purposely go out and run and try to imagine a line between your legs on the ground and keep your legs on either side of it, you might be surprised how immediately you feel your glutei activate! At least I did!

I love the injinji toe socks, I wear them year around but wear the more lightweight ones during summer, or fall, or spring…basically all the days but like 5 in Florida…:)

Reply

Hey Eleanor! It seriously is the worst. We have them at Winco and Rocky Mountain Chocolate factory. Oh that is very interesting… I’m guessing that’s what my problem is too! I’m going to try it on my next run, thanks. Hahaha your weather… come race in Utah this summer:) . Have a great day!

Food poisoning is the worst! I got it after eating off of a deli tray that someone had brought to work. I’m not sure if it had been sitting out too long or if it was bad when they bought it but it was awful, awful food poisoning. I’ve never had chocolate covered cinnamon bears but that probably needs to change. It sounds good!

Reply

OHHHHH NOOOOO… that sounds terrible. I bet you have a hard time ever trusting deli meat after that. I need to send you some of the bears. Have a great day Ali!

My last big bad food poisoning incident was last spring–but it was when the whole recall on romaine lettuce thing was happening, so while I *have* gone back to the restaurant where I ate and think I got sick, I have very honestly requested that my burger does not have romaine lettuce on it. Even though in my heart of hearts I know that that whole ordeal is far past over. I got sick a day before Tom did, and he had this one specific frozen pizza before his “stomach sickness” happened, and even though he suspects that it was really the romaine lettuce thing, he will never ever get that specific frozen pizza again.

I love how kids, when they are young enough to be in a place of pure discovery, have full-bodied experiences with what they encounter (aka Skye and that plastic box). I love that pure, raw sense of interaction–this thing has a space that my leg fits inside, so let me put my leg inside–that has absolutely nothing to do with the mental process of discerning the purpose of the item and using the kind of self control over how and when and why they interact with that item. I love seeing Skye play with boxes. Or be obsessed with the same toy slide. Or whatever it is that she is discovering in the moment!

Chocolate covered cinnamon bears–not my thing at all. Tom got me these chocolate covered champagne-flavored gummy bears for valentine’s, and the canister is still sitting on the coffee table. The thought of dark chocolate and that gummy texture and the pure sugary sweetness mixing with the flavor of chocolate just doesn’t seem appetizing or exciting to me.

And YAY for wearing shoes again! And jeans! And for getting out of the house!

How long are you going to take to recover this time around? I know you took off 2 weeks after St. George, but I also know you have Indianapolis coming up a bit later this spring (except you’re just running 13.1, right? And that’s kind of an easier distance for you these days, right?)…

Ugh that’s all I got for ya. I’m so tired it feels like there are magnets on my eyelids and I have to struggle for them to not shut! I hope you have a great day out there, and YAY FOR SOCCER SEASON!!! Is Brooke going back to horses, too?

Reply

Oh I remember the romaine lettuce problem… I am so so sorry you got sick from there. It really is so fun to see them play and explore! Hahaha I love chocolate covered gummy bears but I can totally see why others do not. I honestly feel like my body has bounced back so much faster than after st. george (I feel 100% right now) but I’ll probably take another week or week and a half off?! I hope that you get some great rest soon… I don’t know how you do it all. Yes, she is!!! She can’t wait!

A HUGE congratulations on your first ultra – what an awesome time too! I am so impressed. I have a pretty strong stomach so I am not even sure I’d recognize a light case of food poisoning – I did have a bad case with some Easter eggs when I was little & to this day am not a huge fan of them. It’s definitely improved though.
I absolutely kick my leg – but for me, I kick more out – so it makes me look a little silly while I run. I am sure it is strength-related (as all of my running injuries have been!) so I have really been focusing on the strength stuff this winter. Hopefully it helps.
I love that Skye is entertained by a box! My little girl is just getting to the age where everything that is not a toy (remotes, sunglasses, kitchen utensils, etc) becomes the best toys ever.

Reply

Thank you so so much Katie! I hope that you continue on with your strong stomach forever! Way to go girl on focusing on the strength! Hahaha isn’t it funny how we buy all of these toys and then all they want are the things that we use to play withThank you so so much Katie! I hope that you continue on with your strong stomach forever!

Worst food poisoning of my life from a local wings place when I was on maternity leave. I was just getting ready to go back to work and I was so sick I had to have family help me with the baby and I was extra miserable because I was too sick to soak in my baby cuddles! 8 years ago and I still haven’t been back there!

Reply

NOOOOO!! First, worst timing ever to get food poisoning. I would never go back there either. I hope you have a beautiful day and that your 8 year old is doing well Samantha!

Reply

Congratulations to Andrew!!!
Chocolate covered cinnamon bears…yes please!!
I have never experienced food poisoning, thankfully! I’m glad you didn’t suffer for too long!
Skye in the plastic tub is so cute!
I saw another reader ask, and I am curious as well… How long are you planning on recovery and not running after your ultra? The Indy mini is in May, right? That should be such a fun weekend! I hope you get to meet Lindsey!! ?
Have a great day Janae!

Reply

Thanks so much Wendy! I need to send you some of these chocolate covered cinnamon bears… so so good. Ya know, I have no idea. I actually feel 100% today (but I need to be smart) so probably another week? Yes that is in May and there are some fun plans before then too that I’m talking about soon ahhhhh. Have a great day!

My husband recently got food poisoning at the Foundry Grill at Sundance! It was so awful, and he was so dehydrated we ended up in the ER. Such a bummer because I love that place, but now he says he’ll never go back. :(

Reply

NOOOO I am so so sorry that he went through this. And I am also so sad because that is one of my favorite restaurants ever! I hope that never happens to you both ever again!

Reply

Thank you SOOO much for posting about Life in Pieces! It’s one of my favorites and I missed the new season coming out.

Reply

AHHHHH YES… let me know what you think about this season. Have a great day!

Congrats Andrew! It always feels more official when the diploma shows up. And good luck with the interview and NCLEX!

I think I got food poisoning once from an In-n-Out in CA. I’m the only one in the family who got sick after eating there (on vacation, of course…the one just down the hill from the Reagan Library). The amount of Pepto & Immodium I consumed on that trip was probably really unhealthy. ? Not that I specifically avoid going there now, but I certainly don’t go out of my way to eat at any In-n-Out anymore.

I had never heard of chocolate covered cinnamon bears until we moved to Utah almost 15 years ago. I remember being horrified when they showed up on several holiday neighborhood cookie exchange plates, actually. Those and the chocolate covered potato chips. But then I realized my new neighbors were not fans of my buttery and decadent southern baked goods, so I figured to each their own. I finally stopped being such a snob and tried them—and I don’t hate them. ? I’d probably have to have a very specific craving to ever buy them, but if someone put a bowl in front of me at a party, I’d probably eat one or two without thinking about it.

Glad to see you are up and on the mend! Hope it’s a good Wednesday for you!

Reply

Oh thank you so so much Michelle. Andrew will be so sad to hear about your in-n-out experience. That is terrible! Haha what is it about Utah and chocolate covered items. Thanks so much Michelle and I hope your day is amazing (I’ll eat your buttery southern baked goods:)!

Reply

I may just have to try them!

Reply

Oh man, I hear food poisoning is the absolute worst! Bummer you got it … and while eating tacos??!! nooo!!!
I don’t believe I’ve had it but I have had very strong stomach reactions when eating pizza as a teenager (I’m glad I stuck with it to realize it was just a phase!) and I have gotten very sick after eating at races, which I think now is due to not eating enough before/during or eating too soon post race.
Chocolate covered anything sounds amazing but the only 2 kinds (found @ Costco & Target) of chocolate covered cinnamon bears I’ve had left me disappointed. Just like with pizza, I won’t give up until I’ve found the perfect brand!
I only kick myself when I’m super tired. And then I get wobbly and fall. I’ve learned to walk more or take a rest when that starts up.
Favorite running socks are the ankle socks from Road Runner Sports. Unless I’m on trails then it’s all about the thicker lower calf socks – my doughnuts ones are my fav for obvious reasons :)
Congrats to Andrew! What an amazing accomplishment!
Have a great day!

Food poisoning is the worse! Hope you are recovering quickly. I got food poisoning from an Italian restaurant in a town I was visiting. I ordered the crab raviolis and I should have known I was in trouble when I could smell an off seafood smell as the waiter brought them to our table. Yup an hour later I was sprinting for a bathroom and then proceeded to sleep on my friends’ bathroom floor the entire night. I have gone back to eat there but I stick to plain pasta or pizza only.

I also randomly kick the inside of my leg when I run. Makes me so mad when I do it. I actually tried the chocolate covered cinnamon bears not too long ago. I didn’t hate them but I didn’t love them either. Chocolate isn’t my favorite.

Reply

Congratulations to both you and Andrew on huge accomplishments!
I go on streaks where I kick the inside of my ankles- even when walking! A few times when I had golf shoes on I even drew blood from kicking my ankles. If you figure out the trick to stop this let us know!

Reply

Congrats again, Andrew! Such an exciting accomplishment!!

Ugh, I’m so sorry you got food poisoning! I’ve never had food poisoning (knock on wood!!) But the husband has from oysters and from Taco Bell. I don’t like oysters so I don’t need to worry about that but neither one of us has a hard time eating Taco Bell once in a while.

I LOVE chocolate covered cinnamon bears, Winco has some pretty good ones!

I kick my feet too! I notice it more when I’m wearing heels because it hurts like the dickens!

Reply

My dad was in the hospital for three days with salmonella after eating at a Mexican restaurant. When he finally got the nerve to go there again a few years later, my mom got food poisoning.

I kick the inside of my legs. Some days are worse than others. I was real bad about it in college and it’s been better since then. Maybe my form is just better now?

Reply

Congrats, Andrew!!

I got food poisoning at TGIFriday’s once. I’ve been back, but never order that particular dish again – it was a pasta/chicken dish – pretty sure the chicken was under-cooked.

I have never tried chocolate covered cinnamon bears… I think I would like them!

I was severely pigeon toed as a baby (casts, braces, the works.) I am still slightly pigeon toed so it’s kind of surprising that I don’t kick the inside of my legs.

Summer running socks? I’m not sure I have different socks for different seasons. I do have some wool socks that I wear when I’m cycling in the winter. I love Bombas year round.

Reply

I think I do the exact same thing with kicking my right leg every now and then. Sometimes if my leg itches I’ll even do it intentionally haha.

Hope you feel better now! I’ve never had food poisoning and I hope I never do but I probably will someday haha.

Today I had my best run in a month! It was both my farthest and fastest of March. I just got new shoes so I wonder if that’s why, even if it’s just a placebo.

Reply

Congrats to Andrew! Amazing!

Food poisioning is no joke! Luckily I’ve been spared (knocking on wood right now)…but my hubby has had it twice! Once from some meat that had been frozen, thawed, refrozen and then rethawed…which we didn’t know until later…and another time from canned tuna fish (that DID NOT smell good).
Oddly enough he will still eat tuna salad…but never ever homemade from a can! Ha

Reply

Soooo, I had never heard of chocolate covered cinnamon bears until I read your blog. When I ran St George Marathon back in 2016, I found them in a Utah and was instantly hooked. They are hard to find here in MN, but when I do find them, I get SUPER excited! So glad to hear you’re feeling much less sore after your stellar race!!

Reply

Yes!!!! I always start to kick my right ankle when I get tired!! I blame it on my left side being a teensy bit taller than the right hahaha

Reply

Congratulations on your ULTRA!!!!! You killed it. Kudos to Andrew too. :) Your Mom is the cutest!!
What glasses are you wearing in that first pic?? I need those in my life!!!

I had food poisoning once in college from a pizza place we ate at. It was miserable with violent vomiting and lots of abdominal pain. I don’t think I ate anything but saltine crackers for about 10 days. I never ate there again. Ever. And like your incident, the friend I had shared the pizza with had the same symptoms and the exact same time of onset (3am- lovely time to start puking) so we knew it was definitely the food.

I wear the same running socks year round. But it’s warm to hot here all year so I guess that’s why. I use either Swiftwick Maxus (zero or one) or Experia Thorlo. I like a lot of cushion with my socks and my feet are going to sweat no matter what so I might as well be comfortable.

Reply

Since reading your blog, I’ve been on the look out for chocolate covered cinnamon bears and I can’t find them! Every time I go to Trader Joe’s I search the aisles because I feel like if I would find them anywhere, it would be there. Maybe it’s not an east coast thing?

Reply

Oh I have never found them there either. I need to mail you some! I get them usually at chocolate stores in the area!

Have to say I loved the laundry meme. I used to leave my laundry drying on racks for days but it makes my other half crazy so I have stopped doing that hahah:).

Ooh, haven’t been to Boston in awhile but Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market are neat places to check out . Mikes pastry in Harvard Square has the best cannolis. I haven’t done this but friends of mine took in a baseball game and loved it. Also we did a Duck Tour – basically a boat tour of the city and that was super cool. It would be fun for the kids especially if the whole family is going.
Have a great day Jane!
