The Best Bday Party= 33 Miles + Remember.

Well, it happened and it was an experience I will never ever forget.  I had some really important people in my life meeting me all along the 33 miles, which turned it into the best birthday party.  Oh and the French toast… that was the best form of birthday cake on the planet.

Things started at 5:30 in the morning with three of my good friends.  We all were shocked over how nice the weather was.

Running with friends = the time flies by and I love getting to really talk to people with zero distractions while we are running… They joined me for 15 miles.

Then I met Andrew and the girls at Kneaders before Andrew took Brooke to school.

IMG 2877

I didn’t have the strawberries and whipped cream but demolished the French toast and syrup.  I felt like I had the biggest burst of energy after eating these, so I might take some to my race:). I also took my Nanohydr8 with my breakfast so that probably helped too.

IMG 6710

After the French toast Brooke wanted to join me for about .3 miles which was so much fun.  Then I ran for a minute over to where Candice was parked and she did 11 with me!

IMG 2927

Jess met us, then my sis and Megan D.  It was so much fun and they kept me entertained with some really great stories.

IMG 6718

Andrew did the last 8 miles with me while my mom had Skye!

A new Personal Distance Record!  The farthest I have ever gone before yesterday was 28 miles (about 8 years ago), so it was really fun to hit a new record and feel so good during it.  I did stop my Garmin for the Kneader’s stop and a few short breaks!

IMG 6728

Here are 15 thoughts that I had from the experience.

*It felt so good to run outside in shorts.  It started in the 40s and then dropped down into the high 30s.  It got pretty windy and started to snow a little bit towards the end but the snow/rain storm waited to roll in until I was done with my run.  It was night and day compared to the week before ha.

*Fuel. Is. Everything.  I felt 500 times better for the 33 miler vs the 25 the week before (during the snow storm which made it really hard for me to fuel properly).  I fueled EVERY 30 minutes, on the dot.  I ate a pb and j sandwich on the way to meet my friends and then took these waffles (which were great), gummy bears and gels every 30 minutes along with the French toast stop.  I also had 2 24 ounces of Powerade along with a lot of water throughout the miles.

IMG 6700

*And finished with Megan D’s cookies (she is selling them now… they are heaven) and a protein bar.

IMG 6735

*And then the candy Candice gave me and then the candy Megan gave me too.

IMG 6833

*Murph reminded me the other day in the comments… “Don’t forget to wear your lucky shorts or lucky socks!  Every runner has a clothing item or pair of shoes they prefer as ‘lucky’ but no one wants to admit they could be just a TINY bit superstitious.”  So I made sure to wear my lucky sports bra (what I wore for the St. George Marathon… a $15 one I got at Old Navy that for some reason I really love).

*I felt like I could have kept going which gave me a big confidence boost for race day… much different than the previous week.

*I don’t remember who told me this but they gave me the tip to break up the run to 3 x 11 miles.  Doing that made it so much easier mentally to realize I COULD DO IT before I started.

*Andrew was the event planner:). I just had my friends and sister text him to get my location whenever they were ready to meet up for some miles.  He did an excellent job coordinating the miles.

*Blue ice/snow.  The Caldera 3s are my absolute favorites for this ultra training.  I wanted to get in a dress rehearsal with my shoes and pack for this long run.  I have zero blisters and very happy feet after this run which I think is a huge accomplishment.  I also finished with zero chafing (I rubbed Dove deodorant all over my normal chafing spots which is what saved me).

IMG 6721

*I tried to keep moving as much as possible (ps don’t you love the balloon that Rebecca tied on to my pack?).  If a friend needed to use the restroom then I just kept moving and looking like a crazy person running around the parking lot.  On race day I will be power hiking on the ups and taking walking breaks for fueling etc but I tried to keep moving as much as possible yesterday because we weren’t climbing a lot of hills or anything (900 ft of elevation gain).   I took about 15 minutes to sit at Kneader’s and then stops to hug friends, but that’s about it.

IMG 6703

*It has been months and months since I have run up my favorite canyon.  It was so nice to have a chance to go up (a few times) for the run yesterday.

IMG 6724

*I can honestly say I had so much fun doing this.  It probably won’t be a yearly tradition (#IWantMoreBabies) but it was a blast and when I told Andrew how much fun I was having at mile 32 I think he thought I was crazy.

And a few pictures from the rest of the day because I should really get in bed (I write my posts at night) ha!

IMG 6846

Andrew sent me to get a massage and then my sister watched the kids so we could go get dinner together.

PS A storm came through in the early afternoon.. I am so lucky it waited for me to run:)

I hope you have a Happy Valentines Day today!  My heart goes out to any of you that are feeling sad, lonely or lost today.   The biggest thing I learned from some pretty lonely days in the past is that today is really a day to celebrate the love we have for anybody/any pet/any passion/anything.. not just a significant other.  Your favorite Target employee that is so nice when they ring you up, your love for running or your running partners, your dog, your neighbor, your family, fresh air, chocolate… anything.  Like always, I’m here to talk if you are EVER feeling lonely.

———————————————————————————————————-

Would you rather receive chocolate, fruity candy or flowers today?

-A mixture of fruity/sour candy from Winco bins please.

Have a favorite birthday present that you’ve received in the past?

Have any running superstitions or good luck charms (in life or running)?

What is your current personal distance record?

That looks like the BEST birthday ever!!!! I also want your couch so bad. :)

I laughed at your Old Navy sports bra–that must be a thing. I obsess over gear and investing in quality clothes and then I’ll find a random Target shirt and it will be the only thing I wear for a month. Lol.

Happy Valentines Day!

Reply

Bahaha that is exactly how I am… we just get each other! Thanks Mollie, you too! GET THE COUCH… it is heaven!

Chocolate AND flowers! Although my mom has always been very anti-Valentine’s Day flowers because they get so expensive, so maybe I can get my flowers later, ha! I love your attitude about Valentine’s Day; I have never had a date for the day (aside from the box of Medjool dates I bought this year, to be punny), but my mom made it so special and fun growing up that I just really love it still. It’s also a great excuse for some self care!!

I’m so glad you had such a special birthday. It really goes to show that even though running can seem like an individual sport, it takes a TEAM to support you . . . and you have a great one. What a perfect way to celebrate!!!

Reply

Kristin, I love that your mom always did that growing up and enjoy the SELF CARE too… the best. Your pun was PERFECT. Keep in touch Kristin and if you are in Utah come join us for ordering in pizza:) . I agree, I have an amazing team!

What an awesome run!!!! I hope you had the best day, it sure sounds like you did. :)

My longest distance is my marathon! But I am training for a 50k soon, so I’m excited to go further.

My hubby ran with me and my girlfriends this morning, so it was a good start to Valentine’s Day!

I hope you have a great day!

Reply

Thanks so much Chelsea and I am so excited for your 50k… please keep me updated with how it is going for you! Such a fun morning, the best way to start the day.

SO PROUD OF YOU, Janae!!! Running 33 miles is AMAZING, and you just keep becoming more and more of a Superwoman!! Also, I need to come visit again soon, and can we please go get that French toast at Kneader’s??!! It looks incredible.

I am not a huge fan of this holiday for many reasons, but I wouldn’t mind getting some gummy bears today. I’m just going to keep reminding myself that God’s love is BIG and sufficient, and that’s all I need. My singleness doesn’t define me, and I won’t let one day out of the year make me feel like I’m not enough. Thanks for all of your encouragement :)

Reply

I NEED TO SHIP some gummy bears to you right now. Oh I love what you said and it is so so so true. You are more than enough. You’ve got this Natalie and I’m excited to see what happens over the next few months for you!

Happy Happy Valentine’s Day, Janae! I love everything about your birthday celebration–from the French toast, to the candy, to your HAPPINESS! And, that picture of you under the blanket at the end cracked me up :)

Great job on the 33 miles!! What an amazing accomplishment!! My personal distance record is a marathon.

I love your perspective on Valentine’s Day. I don’t have a significant other right now, but I have so many other good things to focus on! I made red velvet cookies for my friends and co-workers to add a little happiness to their days too :)

Reply

Mariah… enjoy celebrating that love for the people in your life and yourself! Those cookies sound amazing and way to go on making other’s day today better. I hope you have had a wonderful day so far and that you eat one of those cookies too!

Reply

Awesome run Janae! Sounds like a great bday spent with so many of your friends. You are so ready for the ultra and now know you can do it! Sushi and doughnuts sound great for Valentines Day! Hope you enjoy your day.

Reply

I hope you get both the sushi and doughnuts today (we had sushi last night and it was amazing). Thank you so much, I can’t wait! Have a wonderful day.

Reply

Wow – what an amazing birthday! Thanks for posting the details about how you managed your run, it was great to hear. I’ve been thinking of doing this (in km) since my 30th birthday but it still hasn’t happened (I’m turning 34 this year) and you might have just inspired me over the edge to actually do it.
Just one question – how did Andrew keep your family and friends informed? Did he drive along with you for part of it? Or did he have an app that tracks you or something?

Thanks so much for sharing this with us. I’m glad your birthday run was amazing and happy valentine’s day too!

Reply

DO IT (if it works with your training etc:) . Andrew just used the Find My Friends App to see exactly where I was to tell each friend when they were ready to meet me! I stayed within a 4ish mile radius so it made it easier for people to get to me! Let me know if you do it so I can cheer you on! Have a wonderful day Robin!

Reply

Such a great celebration, Janae! What a great family and group of friends you have.

I love to receive flowers! Maybe because I buy too much candy on my own, but never flowers ;)

Birthday adventures are the best! I couldn’t think of a single thing that I’ve received for my birthday that really stuck out. I’m all about making memories not getting more stuff.

Current personal distance record – 26.2. Pretty sure that’s gonna be it. I would like to ride a metric century (62 miles) on my bike… oh that gave me a great idea for my 62nd birthday! I’ve got 7 years to work up to it.

Reply

Bahaha so so true about the candy vs flowers! I love that idea for your 62nd birthday party and I am excited to hear about it in seven years:) . Thanks Kathy!

Reply

Happy late birthday Janae! I am single but I think for V day I would want somebody to just come over and help me clean my house. That and pasta or cookies.

If I wake up, and my hair looks flawless, I know my legs are like “ah yes let me fix that flawless hair for you” and I always have a good workout.

Current personal distance record is 16, but saturday it will be 18, then next saturday it will be 20 :)

Reply

AHHH I am cheering you on for Saturday (and next Saturday)! You are rocking this marathon training. I like the way you think… cleaning, pasta and cookies, yes please! Have a wonderful day Savannah!

I have these ratty run capris that have holes in them, but my husband bought them for me after I finished my first 5k and I wore them for both my half marathon and my marathon. They are super comfortable and I feel nervous about not wearing them this year, but I’m hoping that the luck transferred over to my new favorites. My hubby bought me a pair of Brooks capris as a finish gift last year after I finished my first marathon and I think I’ll be wearing those this year, as I try to run for a time goal. I also have some awesome socks, but when I am facing a tough run, I always go back to these special socks that my baby sister bought me. I’ve got a fuel belt that she bought me too and even though my husband has offered to buy me a “better” one, I can’t let go. That belt got me through every tough run, my half and my marathon. I also always make sure I have certain ridiculous songs on my playlist, because each one has memories of a special person in my life and no matter how bad things are, I can play the song and they’re right there, running with me.

Reply

I love the story of your capris and I am sure that the luck is transferring over to your new Brooks capris! I can’t wait to hear about how you reached your time goal in them:) . I love hearing about your playlist and the belt. Have a wonderful day Stephanie!

I want Megan D’s cookies for Valentine’s Day! Y’all have some awesome cookies in Utah. I need to come visit!!
My last birthday was so fun! One of my friends organized a run and breakfast at my favorite place. H and some of me friends kids joined us. Best day ever!
I have a Brooks running cap that is at least 10 years old and I have to wear it to all my important races. I just keep washing it and pray it doesn’t fall apart.
The longest I’ve run in training is 22 miles.
I’m so glad you had such a fabulous birthday!! I hope you keep celebrating all month long :)

Reply

Come visit and I will make sure you have the best cookies of your life here ha. That birthday run sounds like the best. Crossing all of my fingers that hat lasts for life (I have a few of theirs that I love)! Thank you Elizabeth, I agree that I should totally do that. Have a wonderful day!

Reply

Wow! How wonderful that everyone and everything (even the weather) aligned perfectly for your celebration run yesterday :) That is definitely a great way to accomplish that bear of a distance! I’m so impressed that you were still having fun with it toward the end…showing how well you’re crushing your training.
I don’t need flowers, but I did get some pretty lavender roses this morning :) And I had a Hershey’s kiss from the candy dish on my desk at work.
I’m not sure if it’s good luck, but I really feel best when my running outfit is color coordinated ~LOL~
Marathon distance is my PR. I considered a 50K a few years ago, but I couldn’t put in the training time. It is inspiring to see how well you and Andrew are doing with the increasing mileage and goals…maybe someday!

Reply

Yes, it really did work out so well! I definitely think that is good luck… keep on doing it! Keep me updated on if you decide to do the 50k in the future. Thanks so much and I hope you have a great day Corey!

Happy belated birthday!

And thank you for always taking the time to remember and acknowledge the people out there who struggle during days like today.

I am blessed to be in a happy place right now but that was not always the case. You’ve sent me replies in the past that had done so much to help me get through some lonely and sad times. I try to be mindful and sensitive to others as a result.

26.2 is my farthest, ha! But i plan to run 27 as a training for my full this November so that will be a new record!

Happy Valentines Day!

Jenny, thank you so so much for your sweet comment. Please let me know how your training goes for your next ultra (and huge congrats on running one already)! Try the French toast aid station, it was the best. Happy Valentines Day to you!

My favorite gift was a marathon entry my husband got me several years ago. I’d wanted to do one but kept getting nervous so him committing me was what I needed. On a related note, I was just thinking yesterday that it would be SO COOL if there was something like an Amazon Wish List for runners to put races they want on! I would love if people gave me entries to the races/distances I want for my birthday and Christmas!

Reply

And happy Valentine’s Day!! I’m so happy for you tbat you felt so great for the whole run. I’m so glad you didn’t have to run on a track (sounds horrible to me!) Such a cool and fun way to celebrate!!

Oh I LOVE that idea… you need to take that to Shark Tank! So sweet of your husband and I love that he did that. Thank you so much. Have a wonderful day!

Happy Birthday (a day late!)!!! You are a rock star! You ran 33 miles in less time than it took me to run my first marathon —> and I’m pretty sure I did NOT feel good! ? What an awesome support system you have! You will kill this ultra! ?

Oh thank you Amanda and you are amazing… do not forget that! Have a wonderful day!!!

Just want to remind anyone feeling sad today, remember the love you have for YOURSELF. You are amazing and enough. You don’t need a relationship to be an incredible human and lead a full and wonderful life. Yes, having special people in your life makes it extra special, but it’s special enough just with YOU! Celebrate yourself today and have a great day!!!!

Oh thank you so much Amanda… you are the best! Hahah the tangents get me every time too! Have a beautiful day:)

Sounds like a great birthday! I probably should have done that age/run thing earlier, as I will be 41 this year (no way LOL). I love the #iwantmorebabies hash tag, so cute. :)

I am a chocolate girl, so I hope I get some good stuff today! And my current personal distance record is 26.2. Never say never, but I think it will stop at that. :D

I knew this was probably my last year to actually do it so I 1000% understand why 41 would not be the time to start this tradition. Enjoy the chocolate today and I hope you get your favorites. Thanks April!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! (My daughter turned 1 the day before your birthday) My present to you is in the form of a new running song. My son saw the new Lego movie the other day, & he has been playing the “Catchy Song” (perfect name for it, it’s so catchy!) on repeat ever since. Every time I hear it, I just want to dance & run fast (sometimes both!). Yesterday while it was playing, I told him to see how quickly he could pick up his toys. It really worked! I’m sure it’ll work on your littles, too. I hope you had the best birthday ever. No one is more deserving.

Reply

Happy happy birthday to your daughter! I am 10000% going to use your Catchy Song/pick up advice. I cannot wait. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day Jessie!

Happy belated birthday Janae!!! I’m so glad your birthday run went so well! Congratulations on your new distance record.
I’ve been to couple 30 mike for 30 years birthday runs. They were both at a park with a three mile loop and picnic shelters. People came and got refreshments at the shelter as desired. Someone was always at the shelter to let people know when to expect the runners and to keep an eye on the gear and food. Because the loop was not too long lots of people showed up throughout the morning to get in less miles, keep the party going and enthusiasm up.
Happy Valentine’s Day!

Reply

Okay, the park idea with the 3 mile loops… that is a fabulous idea! That sounds perfect. I hope you have a great Valentine’s Day too!

Now that I’ve read your post, I officially want to run my age distance on my birthday. So fun doing it with people too!
I high school and college I had lucky sports bras and socks. I made sure to pack that before my jersey on race weekends :)
My personal distance record is 26.2 where I ran the Nashville marathon. Hopefully I can break that record sometime!

DO IT and let me know how it goes! I bet the Nashville marathon was awesome! There really is something to the luck we get from these items. Have a wonderful day Sloan!

Amazing birthday run! Sounds like you had a fantastic day. Enjoy all the recovery! My single personal distance record is 100km for a race. Or 135km over 2 days. Lately I have definitely not been running these distances..

We are headed to the mountains today to get some snow! He hates Valentines but he does stuff for me all the time so I can live without getting chocolates hahaha. I can get them myself. But I do like flowers!

Happy Valentines day Janae!

You are amazing! And you have amazing friends and family to do that with you.

For Valentines Day I could pass on chocolate, flowers, and fruity candy. But a Cherry Mocha from Starbucks would make my heart very happy. I got a Roomba that was a combination Christmas/Birthday gift and its ridiculous how happy those vacuum lines make me everyday when I come home.

Janae!! You did it!! So amazing. It looks so fun. What a great way to start your bday! Happy late bday and rest up!

That run does fun having so many people be apart of it! That was a big jump in mileage from your last long run last week to this week – will you decrease other runs this week?

Reply

Hey Mary! I did make a jump from last week so I adjusted the other runs this week so that I would still hit the number of miles assigned for this week. I hope you are having a great night!

Reply

Happy birthday Janae! You are truly amazing and I’m so glad you had the best time out there! Rest up and enjoy eating all the cake now ;)

Also, definitely chocolate over candy or flowers, best birthday presents were weekends away with my mum when I was growing up. My birthday was usually around the fall break and mum and I would pick a city to go to for a few nights and just have “girls trip”, I have since moved to the other side of the world and these memories are something I will treasure for ever! Running superstitions/good luck charm: wearing (almost) new socks! Life good luck charms: wearing a piece of jewelry passed on from a family member for good luck (bracelet that my mum gave me that her mum gave her, earrings that I made from beads that my granddad gave me etc!).

What is your current personal distance record?

Reply

Happy Birthday and CONGRATS for 33 miles! Wow! And the time it took you only?! Amazing. And, special thanks for the sweet note at the end of the post. I am 37 and single (never married) and sometimes it gets hard to feel like I’m the only one not married, without kids, etc. I know I’m not, but it’s hard to be reminded on days like this, so THANK YOU. You are so thoughtful and sweet.

Reply

YOU ARE AMAZING!!! and i’m so glad you had such a fabulous birthday :)

Mention. Tag. Cross promote. I really am embarrassed it came off that way because it TRULY was not my intention. I just like the validation of anyone telling me they like my cookies. I am a toddler like that.

Current, and most likely forever, distance PR is 26.2

I guess I would have to say chocolate? Definitely not flowers. I get so mad whenever Ross buys them “for me”. He bought me a new coat for Valentines. The last coat I bought myself was about 12 years ago so he said the coat isn’t the present, it is the fact that he went and bought it for me. Haha. I am the worst at buying the stuff I need.

Seriously, everything about yesterday was perfect. Happiest birthday! I am so glad you were born!

Very cool, so inspiring. Love your positive attitude Janae!

You are amazing!! Happy Birthday again!!
For Valentine’s we don’t do much, but we made chocolate covered strawberries at home since they are crazy expensive in the store. They were delicious.
