Happy Birthday Sissy!!!! For Janae’s birthday this year I told her I would write a post so she could have the day off. Feel free to to wish her a happy birthday in the comments because I’m sure she will check those out.
I’m excited to share with you my latest remodeling project! But first a family picture because they are my favorite :)
So my latest project was the main floor powder bathroom. This wasn’t originally at the top of my list of project priorities, but when your son comes up from the basement telling you water is pouring down from the ceiling every time someone flushes you tend to make it a priority :O
So this is the before picture. I don’t know if you can see in the reflection but the door opens into the toilet, which drove me crazy! Also not quite sure why you would need double sinks for a powder bathroom?
The whole room needed a complete overhaul! When we lifted up the linoleum to find the source of the leak, we found that the leak had been going on for quite sometime. The subfloor was completely disintegrated! We were lucky no one fell through! We needed all new plumbing and electrical. Luckily my hubby knows how to do both because I have absolutely no desire to learn how to do that. I like doing everything from sheetrock on :)
I saw this tile and fell in love with it! $1.29 a sq/ft from Floor and Decor (just in case you fall in love with it too :).
The final product! I love how it turned out. I found this antique table on my local classifieds for $120 and turned it into a vanity.
I know a wood countertop isn’t ideal in the bathroom but I love the look of it and since it’s a powder bathroom it doesn’t get as much use. So I sanded it down and applied a coat of tung oil on it every couple of days until I had eight coats. Then I let it cure for a month. In the end you get a much more water resistant wood :)
Now a couple random happenings…
One of the little ones found his sister’s polaroid camera and I have been finding random pictures throughout the house :)
I never know where I will find a kid randomly passed out sleeping in my house… he barely made it into the house from the backyard :)
Has this happened to any of you??? One day I’m going about my day picking up kids from school and when I get home I happen to glance in the mirror and see a bald spot that came from out of nowhere?!?! Somewhere there is a big clump of hair with my name on it. I went into the dermatologist and I guess I have Alopecia. Luckily my mom blessed me with a lot of hair…so comb over time :)

I have also had sudden hair loss – mine was alopecia too! I use a topical prescription and got some injections for a while, it’s also worthwhile though to get blood work done. Hair loss can be indicative of low iron or other issues, so make sure you’re getting enough of all those good vitamins!

My current home project is more of just konmari’ing everything…so far I’ve tackled all of our clothes and kids clothes and toys as well. I try to purge on a regular basis, but I really got the kids into it and asked them to only save things that sparked joy and we will give away those that don’. They actually really got into that concept. Thank you, Marie Kondo! :-)

We’re currently in the everything is torn out and completely nonfunctional part of remodeling our former wet bar right off the garage and converting it into a drop zone/mud room. Almost one wall of shiplap up and then we’ll begin the bench/shoe storage/coat area.

Happy birthday Janea! I was going to text you and see where to meet you for part of your run but my knee started randomly hurting in a totally different spot and I have no idea what I did to it. So I’m taking a couple more days off to see if it will be better before I go see someone for it. It’s annoying but hopefully nothing big again.
My friend had hair loss from that but hers was a really bad case and she ended up having to shave her head. Luckily hers all grew back evenly. I think there are diet things you are supposed to be able to do for it but I could be wrong.

I don’t have alopecia but I think about it every time I notice a lot of extra hair when I wash it or dry it, which has been happening lately. I have autoimmune disorders – don’t know whether you do but I know alopecia is one of the things I may develop down the road because of it. I developed vitiligo years ago. I’m so healthy by so many measures, but then my immune system attacks parts of my body. Our bodies are so weird!!

I’ve dealt with chronic hair loss for about 18 yrs (I’m 38 :) ). Originally diagnosed with alopecia then a while later with thyroid issues…which can lead to hair loss. I’ve tried topical treatments, injections, rogaine, steroids you name it. What finally has worked the best for me in the last 5-7 yrs though has been lifestyle changes if you can believe it! Sleep, exercise, proper nutrition, hydration and the biggest factor DE-STRESS YO’ SELF. I didn’t realize I was stressed out at all but once I made a conscious decision and effort to eliminate unwanted stress everything changed. (Oh and maybe try a sulfate-free shampoo lol.) Good Luck!

I don’t get sudden bald spots but my hair does fall out all over as a stress reaction after major illness. I used to have massive amounts of hair but after three kids (my hair only comes back ~80% after each post-partum fallout) and a major stress reaction hair loss episode after pneumonia a few years ago…I’m down to about 40% of the hair I had in my early/mid twenties.

I have Alopecia Areata. Started when I was 24. I lost almost all my head hair, eyebrows, etc. most of it has grown back but what has seemed to help if you’re interested: steroid injections in my scalp, steroid shot in my hip, ointments for the spots to promote growth, and most recently Platlet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment, which seems to be helping a ton.

Also to your sister, the bathroom looks beautiful, and I think the wood surface will hold up really well after the tung oil. Regarding the hair loss, someone else may have mentioned this, but have you had your ferratin levels checked? If your iron stores get low, this can lead to hair loss, and iron supplements for a few months might help. Last year, I was really tired and couldn’t exercise without major fatigue. My hemoglobin was just within range, but my ferratin level was 9, which was way too low. While researching it, I read about many hair loss stories. I didn’t lose hair but experienced some other not so fun symptoms. After supplementing with iron, my levels are much higher just after a few months. Could be your thyroid as well. Seems like low iron and thyroid issues are often connected. Hope this helps and again, LOVE the bathroom!

I had a few random bald spots as well (dang stress and alopecia!) and my dermatologist injected a steroid into them and it not only stopped the spot from growing but it also helped the hair grow back. Thankfully I have a lot of hair too!

Hey Janae, tell your sister to get her magnesium level check and if it’s low to take magnesium powder supplements. I was diagnosed with the same but I drank the Garden of Life Magnesium orange flavored powder every night in warm water for 6 months and my hair is coming back so thick and strong! It’s amazing plus it calms me and I sleep 10 times better.

Hey I have alopecia too. It developed this summer. I had a couple big bald spots. I did steroid shots and it is mostly growing back. I waited a little longer on one and it is coming in slower and became a bigger spot. I like the style edit root touch up. It’s for grey coverage but seems to did the scalp too and covers the white shiny head. :) amazon! It really took away the need to try and cover with hair.

I’ve never had hair loss like that just the usual just had a baby hair loss. I love seeing what your sister is doing to her house because the previous owners are my friends in laws.

Loving the powder room and the TILE! The floor reminds me of something Janae and Andrew did. Tung oil – awesome! What a major job under urgent conditions, way to go! (Although, seems like the home inspection could catch water streaming into the basement? Seems like all water producing areas should be turned on for inspections, and maybe all at the same time!!)

A close friend of mine started losing entire chunks of hair, according to her doctor it was probably just from being extremely stressed out (which led to her sleeping terribly, etc.). Weirdly the hair loss only set in a few months after the stressful situation. Having said that, women are much more likely to get a “it’s stress! you just have to relax!” diagnosis so who knows maybe she was actually dealing with something else…
Anyway, beautiful renovation, I love the tiles and vanity!

Fun remodeling project! – my current project is selling our previous home. We are set to close tomorrow! And I have lots of hair loss at the moment post-baby, which is sad. It’s a little crazy to see your “bald spot” photo here because you can’t even tell at all from other pictures!
