Skye was pretty confused that I did not go running yesterday morning so she started bringing me over my gear to encourage me to go get after some miles;)

My dad and I shared our birthday party last night <— We do this every year and it is the best!

Together we came up with the perfect menu for our meal—>  Sweet potatoes, an incredible salad bar, rolls and an an ice cream sundae bar.  I wish you could have all come because it hit the spot.

We had a bunch of shredded chicken in the crockpot to add to our salads too.

I had a request for us to make a vlog about how our training is going so far!  We will definitely do another one right before the race and right after too.

Time for peak week for both of us which means a little jump in our mileage, lots of sleeping and extra refueling!

————————————————————————————————————

Do you have the day off today?

What is your normal breakfast these days?

What would be your birthday meal request?

What are you running today?  When was your last rest day?

That ice cream bar looks delicious! You could make some ice cream sandwiches with those cookies too! I might steal that idea for my birthday dessert. But the meal request would be Mexican- I can never get enough tacos or chips and salsa/guac/queso!

Reply

YES, that is what my niece did with hers… try it, it was so fun. And now you are making me need tacos today. Thanks Mariah and I hope you have a great Monday!

Y’all are simply the cutest!! Also, your meals always look so good, so please expect an extra dinner guest soon. :) My birthday meal request would either be froyo (an obvious choice) or Zoe’s Kitchen (I LOVE the chicken rollups and veggies) or a sandwich from Potbelly.

I’m off today from work and running, but I’m going on two walks with two different friends, so it’ll still be nice to get outside and enjoy the sunshine that’s finally back! Enjoy your day, Janae!

Reply

YES YES YES… come on over. I LOVE POTBELLY sandwiches. We have one now and this reminds me that I should go. Enjoy your day off and the walks/sunshine! Thanks Natalie.

“….but are you enjoying it….” HAHAHA I’m dying. Andrew’s reaction. These poor guys have no clue what they’re getting into marrying into running. Seriously though, to be doing a 50k while finishing up school and, oh, being a dad to three….he’s ROCKING it. I was cracking up though. :)

I do not have the day off today, but my kids and husband do. :(

I had a terrible first big workout back after the flu yesterday and now I’m freaking out that there’s no way I’m going to hit my goal in my race in two weeks. It’s crazy how two weeks ago I had no doubt and felt in such great shape, the flu happened, now I can’t even run my goal race pace. I’m hoping it’s just still lingering and I haven’t lost ALL fitness. Ugh. Winter training is rough!

Reply

Hahaha he really had no idea what he was getting into when he signed up but he is doing amazing!
Mollie, I am so so sorry about your workout yesterday… as Molly Huddle says, “I’ve had too many bad workouts to fixate on any one bad (or good) one. The sample size needs to be bigger, and fitness realistically takes many months, even years to maximize.”
https://www.runnersworld.com/training/a26322088/how-molly-huddle-handles-bad-workouts/
This one workout does not mean anything in terms of your fitness… you are probably still getting over this flu and by the time the race is here, you’ll be in tip top shape and well rested. How many days total did you take off? Leading up to St. George this year I couldn’t even run my mile repeats at race pace (like a week before the race.. I felt so off) but then race day came and I did it for 26.2 miles. You can and you will! Don’t let your brain take you to another place…. You’ve got this!

Reply

Thank you, thank you x a million for posting that link! It made me feel a lot better about that workout. I’m really hoping you’re right and I’m just still getting better…and by the time the race gets here I’ll feel more like myself. I really only took off 3 days in a row, but I missed two big workouts and things just haven’t felt the same. I think a lot of it is I was hitting paces I had never hit before and part of me doesn’t even believe I can do it to begin with. So when I didn’t it was just confirming what I’ve been thinking. I’m trying to remember I HAVE hit those paces (like 3 weeks ago which isn’t that long ago I guess, haha) and really trying to be positive. It’s hard though!
And thank you also for sharing your mile repeat story….that’s just so crazy! Our bodies are so weird that way. But training plans really work, even if it’s hard to believe! Have a wonderful rest of your day!

Reply

Poor Andrew seems to be really not enjoying the training. I know you BOTH will Rock it and feel so proud and glad you did it (and that it’s over) after!

Reply

Like he says… he doesn’t love it but can’t live without it ?! Thanks Ashley and I think you are 100% right!

YAY ITS BACK!! I was so concerned haha!

I do not have the day off today, sad.

My normal breakfast is oats + 2 scoops collagen + almond milk + blueberries:). I usually make it the night before and refrigerate it and eat it cold.

I’m running 6 miles today. My last rest day was Friday! Last week was peak week and tbh it was making me feel so tired. Race day is 12 days away and I think life stress has just really made me not be as excited about this goal as the last one. I was so stoked to break 2 in Jan because it was my goal from running since day 1. However, now breaking that and going for a 1:53 ish I haven’t had as much time to internalize it and get excited which I know is so important for race day! My priority for the next 10 days is SLEEP, but if you have any tips towards mental side/goal I would love to hear it:)

I loved seeing Skye walking on Insta yesterday and seeing how excited your whole family was. It sounds like you have a great support team, I love that.

I hope you have a wonderful day!

Reply

Thank you Eleanor, that was so weird… it’s never gone to that screen before. Oh I hope your work day is a great one. Your breakfast sounds so so good. Way to go on peak week and smile every time you think about your race. Be stubborn about your goal. You want it, you’ve done the work, nothing can hold YOU back. You are so much stronger than you think and sleep will help you build the excitement. Take care of yourself and don’t stop believing in yourself. Email me if you need any other tips! I’m cheering for YOU! Thanks so much and I hope your Monday is a great one. TWELVE days until you get to go celebrate your training!

Reply

I asked this question a couple weeks ago and I don’t think it was answered, if it was and I missed it apologies. You had mentioned Andrew was dropping down to a 50K, you were still running the Ultra. 50K is roughly 31 miles, what is the mileage of the Ultra?
Thanks and Good Luck to both of you, I doubt I will ever get past a 1/2 marathon. :)

Reply

Oh sorry about that! I didn’t explain that very well! I will be doing the 50 miler! A 1/2 marathon is incredible… that is awesome Shannon. Have a great day!

Reply

I don’t think I’ve ever played four corners. Your ice cream bar looked amazing.

Yay for nursery time! I hope she gets comfortable there soon so you get a lot of good upliftment when she’s there.

Reply

YES YES YES… we are getting closer to her going on her own wahoo! Thanks Jenny. Ask your kids to play four corners with you… I think it is part of elementary school curriculum;) . Have a great day Jenny!

Try running with bear spray on the trails! I k ow you carry enough as is but that will help you against any animal they you may come upon that could be a threat. Bear spray has a direct stream where as mace goes more into the air and can blind you as well. Look into it!

Reply

That is such a good idea… I didn’t know that it had the direct stream. Purchasing today. Thanks so much Emily and I hope you have a wonderful day!

That salad bar set up looks great, but CAN WE TALK ABOUT THAT ICE CREAM BAR SET UP WITH COOKIES?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? That just looks like the best…

I love how Andrew admitted that he doesn’t love running but can’t live without it. I think this race will be like that–he will hate the running, but he will love the fueling stations, and he will be proud of himself after…and he might stay away from doing another (unless you invite him to join you with a big big smile on your face…) and then in a couple of years he will shrug his shoulders and say “hey why not do that again?”

That’s my prediction at any rate!

I don’t ask for anything anymore for my birthday dinner. When I was a child and we had birthday dinner at home, I *always* asked for baked ravioli (it was boiled the normal way and then baked in a rectangular baking dish with pasta sauce, mozzarella, ricotta, and parmesan…even when I was a kid I was smart enough to know that a meal with ALLLLL THE CHEESE is really where it’s at!!!). In this part of my life, Tom and I surprise each other with a nice dinner out. We can’t afford *nice nice nice* restaurants in our everyday budget, but we save and take each other out for a fancy dinner as part of our birthday gift to each other (and these restaurants should be special, anyway, right? They should be appreciated and not taken for granted, right? That’s what we think anyway). And we don’t tell each other until our birthday day (and usually we try to hold out until we are on our way to the restaurant).

ACK–this is long!!! Sorry :) I have to get back to work…AND sneak away little bits of time to plan this week’s blog post…

Reply

Come over for our next birthday party! It really will be so incredible for him and he has worked so hard… I can see him saying that too in a few years haha. I need that baked ravioli right this second, I’m drooling. I love what you and Tom do now, you guys have such a great relationship. I hope today’s work day is a great one! Thanks Stephanie!

“9 and a half…I mean 9:30, I’m tired” ??? I can only imagine the training on top nursing school! Good job guys.

Reply

Hahaha I KNOW… he is killing it! Thanks Jenn and I’ll make sure he is in bed tonight by 8 and a half;) . Have a great day!

Reply

My birthday meal request would definitely be spaghetti. I could eat spaghetti every single day.

I always take Sundays off as my rest day. Today my brother and I are both out of school so we will probably do 4 miles together. It’s the only day of the week it isn’t supposed to rain so the goal is to get in a good workout!

Good luck on peak week to you and Andrew!

Reply

I would join you on the spaghetti streak! I hope your run with your brother was a great one and that you got some sunshine too! Thanks Sloan!

Happy Belated Birthday to you and your Dad! I love your ponytail in the vlog—you look like Belle! ❤️

Reply

Oh thanks Kristen! I’ll have to do it more… Brooke will think I’m cool. Have a wonderful day.

Reply

We don’t have the day off today! boO! I bought a 2-pack of big quiches at Costco and i’ve been eating slices of that for breakfast!
hmm i love homemade broccoli soup as a birthday request

Reply

I feel so bad for Andrew. This guy is schooling, working and fitting in training. My hat is off to you Andrew. You look drained. Hang in there, my prayers are with you.

Reply

AND SPENDING SO MUCH TIME WITH HIS KIDS AND ME. I have no idea how he is doing it. Thanks Cathy!

Reply

Poor Andrew looks like he needs a nap! I applaud your determination, because I couldn’t possibly imagine how exhausted you are! Positive vibes to both of you.

Reply

I honestly think he could do it with the training he has already done so hopefully he will just coast until race day! Thanks Courtney and I hope you have a great day!

Reply

Oh my goodness, you always have the best salads, they keep me inspired. Also OMG how tall is your nephew now? I don’t have the day off :(

Reply

I hope your work day goes by quickly! Hahaha he has gotten way too tall.. With his hair he is 6’3″ and without his hair he is 6’0″:) . Come over for our next salads. Thanks Jacinta!

Looks like an awesome birthday dinner! And it is super cute that Skye brought you your running gear :)

I do have the day off – it is Family Day Long weekend here in BC. This morning we had oatmeal with cinnamon, nutmeg, goji berries and bananas. And almond milk. It was really good. Confession: some mornings I have eaten candy for breakfast

Not sure how far I am running today yet. Yesterday I went to hike up a local trail covered in snow which was lots of fun!

My birthday request often involves ice cream cake. I am negotiable on the meal haha.

Have a great day Janae!

Reply

Candy for breakfast… I knew I really liked you. Enjoy your day off Kristine! And now I need birthday cake. Thanks Kristine!

Andrew looks miserable! Please tell him that I’m sure your readers won’t judge or mind at all if he ends up not going through with the 50k. I remember that time during my Capstone/NCLEX and I was DRAINED just from that. I can’t imagine if I was also training for my first ultra… and I love running!
It was very cute when you were talking about food and you pulled out a roll from off camera ;) That’s my girl!

Reply

I keep telling him that but he is determined… he said he signed up so he has to do it! He is quite stubborn. Hahaha I feel like I have a carb in my hands at all times. I don’t know how you did the 100 mile training! You are my hero. Have a wonderful day Stacey!

Reply

I was going to say the same thing!! Poor Andrew…. why is he doing something that he seems miserable? He seems to really enjoy mountain biking and other forms of exercise. He could certainly still run for exercise when desired. I really sympathize with how hard it is to exercise when you are doing 12 hr hospital shifts and studying full time. I think he ought to just maybe join you running for some miles during the 50 miles to keep you company and have fun together, but not kill himself trying to do a 50K…. I mean what’s the actual point of doing it if you are miserable? None of us would judge him for not doing a 50K.

Reply

I agree 100%, Melly! No one would judge him at all, in fact, I’d respect him even more for dropping out and just doing some miles with Janae during it. Once his schedule chills some he could give it another shot if he really does want to.

Looks like I broke the internet with looking miserable… just wanted to add my two cents in here. I hope you are having a great day. Just a little FYI I’m not miserable, when we filmed it I literally had a very hard week and even worse training week. My runs seemed to be unproductive and WAY harder than usual. Having a bad week and being emotionally spent, doesn’t determine my relationship with running although at that moment it was off. To me it was a down week, but this week has already been better and I’m still focused on my goal of completing the 50K. Do I love other things more… of course, but its always been my status quo to challenge myself and get uncomfortable.

Reply

I really liked that you waved the roll at the camera at the end of the vlog. :) That made me smile.

Reply

Hahahah at any point of the day I could probably do the same thing haha… CARBS. Have a great day Marilyn!

VLOG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yall are awesome! Great way to start the week! Thank you!

Oh I am glad you liked it! Thank YOU Alisha and have a great day!

Your birthday dinner looks perfect to me! Except I need to have birthday cake. This year I made myself a coconut cake with lemon cream cheese frosting.

Unfortunately I don’t have today off from school but at least I don’t have to go to work. I just got in my longest run since my marathon in December (I think). I didn’t really plan it but it ended up being around 17 miles. Felt good after a rest day yesterday!

Hope this week goes great for you!

Reply

That bday cake sounds HEAVENLY! Huge congrats on your 17… that is awesome! Thanks Grant, you too!

Reply

That birthday dinner sounds fabulous! My sis and I often share our birthday dinners and we love it!

I’m so thankful for a 3 day weekend this week! My oldest is at winter camp and I’m nursing a sprained ankle so no work = perfection!

9/10 breakfast is a Costco protein bar. It’s just so darn quick and easy.

My last bday meal was homemade enchiladas!

I am currently on a continued rest day until I figure out what’s up with my ankle! And no lifting weights because I took off most of the skin on my hand when I fell. Boo!

Andrew’s passion for ultras is so inspiring! ?

I sent this to someone else but thought I would share with you !! I hope you are having a great day. Hey Andrew! That comment was totally light hearted! You’re going to school, spending hours at the hospital (I work at a hospital too!), you have three kids, a house to take care of and are trying to train for this race. Your demeanor was appropriate but nonetheless it made me laugh. ?

Reply

Hahah no worries I couldn’t tell :) and some are just thinking I’m miserable… it’s been a whirlwind , but I’m stoked!! have a fantastic day!

Reply

I think Andrew is more representative of how MOST of us feel about running, haha …. there are the few people who are truly obsessed/in love/incredibly passionate (like you) and then there are the rest of us … running cause we NEED it not cause we LOVE it. thank you for sharing both sides!! You guys are very cute and both should be so proud of what you are accomplishing. It’s incredible!

Reply

I think you are 100% right Andrea!! Thank you so much and I hope you have a great evening Andrea!

Reply

Wow, I hope that Andrew isn’t representative of how most runners feel about running! I love to run and there are some days I only half like it but if I felt like he does about it I wouldn’t do it. Why would anyone do it if they feel like he does about it? Exercising shouldn’t be a job or a chore, it should be a joy. Ride your bike, dance, play basketball, swim…but do something that is good for you body, mind and soul. I truly hope Janae doesn’t agree 100 percent with Andrea’s comment about running. It shouldn’t be an obsession to the point of misery!!!

Reply

I agree with this 100%! Exercise should be good both for the body AND the mind. If he’s miserable doing it, then it doesn’t sound like it’s too great for the mind. And if he’s so exhausted/burned out with his heavy load right now, then it may at that point not even be good for the body either.

At the end of the day, sounds like he has many other high-priority goals/life responsibilities on his plate. Nothing wrong with(further) re-calibrating your needs and goals to adjust to life’s changing paces. If this isn’t bringing you joy, then no one will judge you for admitting that and moving on

Turns out I ended up getting whatever Felicity had. I went to bed last night at 9:30. I looked back through my fitbit app (so it goes all the way back to when I got it on May 17th) and that is the earliest I have gone to bed (by an HOUR!) since I have gotten the watch. Teach me your ways. I need to go to bed earlier! Can you call me and tell me to go to bed when you do?

I LOVED the vlog and the realness haha – you’re both amazing and so disciplined! honestly, why I enjoy reading your blog the most is that it’s so inspiring to see how you stick to your plans and all the running, makes me wanna be a more disciplined person as well :D (Well, I can not lie, I also love ALL THE FOOD featured in the blog, that also inspires me, just in another way hehe :D).
Wish you both good miles and great sleep :*
