Friday Favorites + 11 Months + Do You?

7.15 miles at 8:16 pace which also means I spent about an hour trying to acclimate to cold temperatures again. It was 26 degrees when I finished and I give myself about 2 more weeks to get adjusted to the cold before it feels normal again.  Maybe I should cover my ankles and that would help.

Skye turned 11 months yesterday!

IMG 8025

She celebrated big time.

Do you eat raw veggies?  I do in salads but other than that… I eat veggies cooked.  My sister is really good at snacking on raw veggies throughout the day but I’m all about roasting them in olive oil and whatever seasoning sounds good that day.

Kids/homework/errands.

IMG 8055

And Knox started wrestling so he was pretty thrilled about that.

IMG 8057

Our neighbor owns a restaurant (and is one of the chefs) in the area so he invited us to come try the new menu (it is available starting Monday) and it was amazing.

La Jolla Groves for the win.  I’m going to need to go back weekly for all of this goodness.

IMG 8063

The gnocchi, arancini and kale salad were my absolute favorites!

I have a few favorite things to share with you today (affiliate links included):

*I have a few new favorite things from Roolee that I’ve been wearing a lot lately!  This shirt, this flannel, this dress and this sweater!

DSC07580

*It’s the little things…. this space heater under my desk feels so so good.

IMG 7678

*The Nest.  Andrew was SOOOO excited to get one of these and now I think it is pretty great too.  We like it because it can be controlled from our phones, it learns our cooling and heating habits and looks for ways to save money for us.  Another awesome thing is that our local gas company gives us a rebate for it as well!

IMG 7456

*This picture of Beretta.  She is loving the trails as much as I do but she is a lot faster and pretty much flies the entire time.

DSC07873

*This little car thing is still Skye’s favorite.

IMG 7421

*Did anyone else see this episode of Shark Tank?  Andrew and I sobbed.  These three kids lost their mother to breast cancer and then a few years later lost their father to cancer (a cancer that he developed during the cleanup of 9/11).  Their dad invented the Cup Board Pro and they are now selling it to continue his legacy.  Once they are aren’t sold out again we will be buying one.

IMG 7562

*I brought out my favorite slippers again to replace my oofos to wear around the house until my mileage is back up again.  Andrew gave me these slippers last year and I am obsessed with them.

IMG 7802

*Favorite podcast of the week:  The Morning Shakeout w/Mario Fraioli with Lauren Fleshman.

*A Million Little Things.  I cried 4 times in the first episode.

Katherine!!!  “I’ve always been a runner, nothing crazy fast, but I love the training process and the connection with other runners while training and racing.  I’ve done 5 full and a handful of half-marathons.  I found out I was pregnant over the summer and decided right away that I wanted to try and run (at least) one half marathon during my pregnancy!  I’ve followed your blog for a while now and remember reading about your races while pregnant with Skye, and how you rocked them!  So, last weekend, I decided to run my first (hopefully not last!) half-marathon while 18 weeks pregnant!  It wasn’t my fastest- or my slowest, but it felt great the entire time and I ended up placing second in my age group!  I’m hoping to find another soon, or at least a few smaller races to sprinkle in before April when baby girl is due:)”

Sherri!!!  “I’ve been addicted to the half marathon distance for a while now but finally ran my first full at the Marine Corps Marathon last weekend.  I was running with a friend and we were both aiming to BQ.  We came up with a 3:35:59 (59 seconds too many) but it didn’t matter.  We were so happy and had an amazing race.  The crowd support was like nothing I’ve ever seen.  Definitely recommend it to anyone thinking about running their first marathon.  Naturally I can’t give up on that BQ so I’m going to run another 26.2 on my birthday in April!  I didn’t think I would love the marathon distance, but there is something about it.  There’s something about giving every ounce of yourself that makes me want to do it again.”

Jessica!!!  “Good morning! I wanted to write about my son Will. We ran the Across the Bay 10k today. This is his favorite race—it is well organized, a beautiful sunrise and it is cool running up the bridge and seeing the sights. Will ran a personal best of 45:45. I am proud of Will for going after it, not giving up and pushing himself. I can’t wait to run more races with Will. I say “run”—-but it’s more like we start together and he waits for me at the finish line.”

Susan!!!  “On October 27, 2018 – I completed my first marathon – Run with Scissors trail marathon in Cuyahoga Falls National Park – Ohio. I have been running 10 years and recently celebrated my 50th birthday. I felt like 26.2 was a distance I could not achieve. Then I joined a Moms Run This Town trail running group and felt like I could finally achieve this distance with all the support I have received from this wonderful group. The picture below is me (on the right) and my friend Cynthia Thompson (she is on her 3rd marathon this year). The conditions for the race were rainy and slippery mud, rock and roots but my butterfly wings helped me make it to the finish line.”

Chelsea!!!  “I ran my first ever marathon on Sunday! It was the Bass Pro Conservation Marathon in Springfield, MO. Before this one, I had trained for two other marathons, but ended up getting injured halfway through training and was forced to pull-out of them – I guess third time’s the charm!! It was a crazy, crazy experience. I ended up finishing at 3:57:30 as the 13th overall female! I also snagged first in my age group! I couldn’t believe it. I definitely broke down and cried at mile 23, but my hubby and a girlfriend ran with me for a few minutes and that helped. I didn’t think I wanted to do another after I finished, but now I am already thinking about which one I want to sign up for next! I included this picture because it makes me laugh – I sprinted my finish and my body was DONE! People can read more about my race recap and training on my blog – papersandpavement.com ”

Melissa!!!  “I have been wanting to write this email (and hoping that I would be able to) for so very long. On Saturday I ran my first ever RunDisney race and my first 10k ever!!! After twisting my ankle in January and having to go to physiotherapy to rehab it I was unsure if I would ever get back to being able to do this distance. But patience, an amazing physiotherapist, and being an A+ physio student.. I managed to meet my goal of running a Disney 10k! The energy was unbelievable as I ran it with 30,000 of my Disney friends. Excited to run my second Disney 10k in April and now have an itch to try my hand at a half marathon… Gulp!!!”

Tanna!!!  “I (second from left) completed the Raleigh City of Oaks Marathon this past weekend with three of my best friends and managed to snag a TWENTY minute PR! I stuck with Laura (third from left) for the entire race. She and I have had the same goal for years- a sub 4:30 marathon. We have not always seen eye-to-eye and have been competitive in the past to the point that it ruined our friendship. After working on ourselves and forgiving each other, God brought us back together in a way only He could and we accomplished our biggest goal! Our time was 4:29:19!! I am so thankful for her and her friendship, I couldn’t have accomplished this without her! Her sister, Ashley (far right) also snagged a PR at this race and fought for every mile! Her mental game is something I strive for! Paula (far left) is my absolute best friend and one of my biggest supporters in life. There is no way I could have reached this goal without her help and encouragement. She ran the 10K and killed it! My parents were also HUGE supporters, both through training as well as at the actual race. They spent their morning (before 5AM) getting our breakfast ready and making sure we were all ready to reach our goals. I am so blessed that God chose them to be my parents, they are the absolute best! Lastly, God was with us every mile on that course. He has blessed me with the absolute best friends and family and I felt Him with me for the entirety of the race. I am beyond blessed… and also finally a sub 4:30 marathoner!!!”

Michelle!!!  “This has been a great running year for me who says we slow down when we get older!? Ha! I turned 46 this year and running has never been better! I ran a half marathon on Sunday in Santa Clarita, CA. I felt really good that morning and ended up with a PR of 1:45, 2nd place in my age group out of 70 women and 18th overall of women! So proud of myself! This is the first time winning an age group award for me! My next stop is Boston in April for the first time! I can’t wait!”

What are your weekend plans?!

How do you most often eat your veggies… raw, steamed, roasted?

At home do you wear shoes, slippers, oofos or are you barefoot?

Who has a November birthday?  A November race?

OK, that first pic of you is too precious, Janae!!

I’m all about cooked veggies and slippers on at all times at home. I usually get mine from Kohl’s or Target. The Dearfoams brand makes some really comfy and affordable ones. I also bought some $3 elf ones from the Target Dollar Spot, and I love them!

I was in the ER again yesterday for another kidney stone, so this weekend is definitely going to feature a lot of rest. I’m thankful that we have Monday off for an extra day of that. Hope that y’all have a great weekend, Janae!

Reply

Oh Natalie. I am so so so so sorry. That sounds so incredibly painful. Take care of yourself this weekend and I’m glad you get three days to rest.

I was just thinking about veggies yesterday. I need to eat more of them. I’m not a veggie person at all! I don’t mind roasted veggies but other than that (so dinner time) I don’t eat them.

I’m one of those people who have shoes on almost all the time. Mostly just because then I’ll be ready to go when we need to without having to find another pair of shoes. We also need a good system for shoes at our house apparently because my kids just cannot keep track of them and they are found all over.

Reply

Hahaha you are not alone… I cannot find a few of the kids shoes right now and it is driving me crazy? How do they just lose one of a few pairs? So weird. Have a wonderful day Jenny!

Well lucky for me I had a race in November AND a birthday – today’s my 30th birthday! My race in Mexico was good too – started out raining which was kind of not fun, plus it made some of the old stone streets verrrrrry slippery! I felt great up until the last three miles when the heat/humidity started getting to me. But I still finished! And I didn’t throw up on the course so I count that as a victory lol!
Seriously though, it can be tough running a race in a country where you don’t speak the language well. It was a great experience though! And Mérida is one of the best places I’ve ever visited!
I’m glad you linked to those slippers because mine are pretty worn out and I need some new ones! I pretty much wear supportive/comfy sandals in warmer weather, and slippers in cooler weather at home. Runners have to take care of their feet!

Reply

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY RHIANNON!! I hope your day is perfect today and I am so glad you had the opportunity to go race in Mexico! Congrats on an amazing race (heat/humidity/rain… you are strong). I want to go race in a different country. Yes, we do… our feet give us all of those miles:) Celebrate today with all of the treats!

Reply

I eat carrots, celery, and spinach raw, ever other veggie has to be cooked.
I wear slippers around the house my feet are always cold.
My son’s birthday was this past Monday on the 5th, my wedding anniversary is this Saturday the 10th, and my husband’s birthday is on the 21st. We have alot to celebrate this month.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TOMORROW!! I hope that you guys are going out somewhere fun! You have a busy month:) Have an amazing time.

We watched 4 episodes last night. We are hooked! Have a wonderful day Lindsey!

Wow! All the runner accomplishments were so inspiring–lots of first-timers and PRs and new experiences.
That pic of Beretta!!! Amazing! Do you follow We Rate Dogs on Twitter or Instagram? It makes my day EVERY day, and I think Beretta would get an especially high rating :)
A Million Little Things–had NO IDEA what it was about when I started watching it, but I love it and cry with it, too.
Steaming and roasting are my go-to methods for veggies.
Barefoot or sock feet for me.
My bday is at the end of November! It’s the reason I can’t start Christmas decorating until December 1.
Hope you stay cozy today. I’m so not ready for freezing temps!

Reply

NOOO I need to check them out, that sounds awesome! I am so invested in that show right now. I feel like they are real life friends now. Happy birthday month! Celebrate big time this month and I agree… wait to decorate, this is your bday month:)

Reply

I like veggies both raw and roasted. Have you ever tried roasted parsnips? Actually pretty good! At home I try to be barefoot or socks until it gets too cold, and then slippers come out.
A question for Sherri (ran the MCM) – are you the one with the Team PAWS Chicago shirt? I ran Team PAWS for the Chicago marathon this year and liked it so much I am doing it again next year (and not waiting on the lottery). Such a great cause and the spectators gave a lot of “go team PAWS” cheers throughout the course too. That’s a great photo by the way no matter which person you are! I am still hoping for a good marathon photo (3 races in, still no luck). Congrats on a great marathon time!

Reply

I don’t think I have… I will have to try them! Thanks Cathy:) If she doesn’t write back here I’ll email Sherri and ask her:) Have a wonderful weekend Cathy!

Hi Janae – no worries if there is no reply! I am amazed at how small a world it is sometimes!

I just love reading all the reader’s stories!! All of them are so inspiring ❤️
I love that picture of Barretta! Pure joy!
We eat lots of steamed veggies here. I try to snack on raw veggies, buy I am just not into them.
This weekend will be somewhat quiet, yay. One band tournament tomorrow, and that’s really all. Kind of nice for a change…ha, ha. I am really looking forward to a good long run too ?
Enjoy your Friday!!

Reply

Our community is absolutely amazing. Enjoy the band tournament and a slower weekend:) Thanks Wendy!

Roasted or steamed veggies, never raw.

Always wearing something on my feet around the house – knitted slippers, heavy socks, sandals with socks in winter (I know, goofy), or light joggers/walkers like sketchers.

A million little things tv show is awesome!!!! Way better than this is us, in my opinion!!!!

Reply

I am actually going to have to agree with you… It is better than this is us and it makes me feel way too many emotions:) Have a wonderful day Tracy!

You mentioned two of my favorite things right now……….A Million Little Things!!! I’m loving this show! My 15 1/2 year old son and I watch this show. We love it. Oh and you mentioned the Nest. I love our Nest too. Our light company gave us ours for free and installed for free. I think they give us a $20 yearly cash back thing but I was thrilled it was free! Have a great day.

We just got a second snowfall for NW MO. This is rare for our area of the midwest. Not complaining. I love winter and fresh snow.

Reply

They have it to you for free… that is awesome! Second snowfall already:) Enjoy and I hope you get a great run in the fresh snow! Also, I think we need to have a discussion group on A Million Little Things! IT IS SO SO GOOD!

That picture of Beretta makes my Friday, so THANK YOU for including it

Oh you are welcome! She loves those trails of ours. Have a wonderful day Anne.

This weekend is all about house prep for family coming to town for Thanksgiving and hopefully a lot of resting to shake a nasty cold I picked up. Boo.

As far as vegetables go, I’d say I’m equal opportunity in raw vs cooked. :) I was just diagnosed as gluten intolerant (not sure I’m ready to talk about it…still devestated by my gf holiday baking options, haha), and my snack habits definitely involve a ton of raw veggies at the moment.

My youngest had his bday on the 4th and my mom on the 6th and my sil will have hers on the 25th. November is a good bday month for us. :)

Happy Friday Janae! ❤️

I’m running the Syracuse Half Marathon on Sunday with my sister. Also home inspection tomorrow on our hopefully new house! =D

Veggies depends on mood and time of year- I eat them all three ways really. Love roasted or grilled veggies though!

Reply

Good luck on Sunday! You have such an awesome weekend up ahead. Let me know how it all goes, I’m cheering for you!

Reply

I wear slippers around the house but if I am sitting I usually take them off. Where I leave them my girls tend to steal them and walk around the house and then leave them in random places. So I usually have to go looking for my slippers!! But if I dare to leave them in my 7 year old’s room she is very quick to let me know!!! My youngest will turn 8 on 11/24. She is always tricky because it seems so close to Christmas and is right around Thanksgiving.

Reply

Happy 11 months Skye!! She really knows how to rock a pair of sunglasses :)

I also love that picture of Beretta, that is the epitome of joy! Wishing a great weekend to you and your family Janae!

Reply

That picture of Beretta made me laugh out loud at my desk!

Roasted veggies and slippers whenever possible!

Have a great weekend.

Reply

Yay! So glad to hear you’re loving A Million Little Things. Definitely a new favorite for me too!
Also how is skye 11 months!!! Why does that precious first year have to go so fast?? My baby is almost 3 now – can’t believe it!

Reply

It was 10 degrees at the start of my run this morning and I totally agree that it will take a few weeks to really acclimate. I was glad my husband kept the fire going all night so I could warm up when I got home. I have those same slippers, they are the best! We have tile floors, so I wear them all winter, and Vionic flip flops all summer (I think I need to try the oofos though!) And yay for roasted veggies and all the accomplishments!

Reply

I am still trying to acclimate to cold weather running and then when I woke up this morning there was snow on the ground! I am not ready for snow this early! I totally wear my Ugg Slippers all winter around the house. I cannot do barefoot with all of our tile. I am with you, roasted veggies are amazing! Do your kids prefer them raw or roasted? My daughter always seems to ask for her’s raw when we are making dinner. Really wish I had your chef neighbor, that food looked amazing!

Reply

Winter running is upon us here too (I’m in MN) and I definitely think covering those ankles would be a good start.:) I like to run with a headband around my neck/chin too – helps me with the wind.
This weekend we have showings & open houses happening at our place, so we get to go hang out with my parents. Should be fun!
I usually prefer veggies cooked – but certain ones I’ll eat raw – with hummus, or sometimes mustard (weird, I know). I much prefer broccoli, in particular, in it’s cooked form.
At home I wear regular or wool socks most of the time – extra slipper socks (mukluk style) when I am extra cold.
No November race – I’ve got a bunch of post-baby runs planned though! First little run happened last night.
Happy Friday!!

Reply

I’ll snack on baby carrots and bell peppers raw, but that’s about it! Love roasted broccoli.

Those slippers look amazing–curious about why you pulled them out “til milage is back up again”? Do you switch out your at-home footwear based on training?

Have a great weekend!! Skye is so cute!

Reply

HEY!! Yes… when I am training hard my feet hurt from all of the running so I wear OOFOS to help them to feel better:) Does that make sense? Have a fabulous weekend!

Reply

Yes! My feet are always cold so I’m a year-round slippers kind of girl. :-)

Reply

Big fan of the Nest – I love not having to get up to adjust the temperature. :) Even more lazy – setting up your space heater so you give Alexa, Google, etc. a voice command to turn it on or off. :)
