Sissy’s New Workout Room (She Remodeled It… the Before and After Is Amazing)!

Hey!  I’m so excited to share with you what I have been up to over the last several months.  But first a few family pictures :)

I can’t believe how fast they are all growing up.

IMG 4421

They are so stinking cute together!

IMG 5197

Okay now on to what I’ve been up to.  So I have a confession….I am a little addicted to remodeling.  As soon as we finished remodeling my last house I felt  a little lost.  Now what do I do in my free time between 9-11pm at night???  So as any sane person with 5 kids would do, you sell your completely remodeled home and buy another house that needs a complete overhaul!

IMG 3472

Welcome to the boat room… yes that is a porthole in the wall :)  I call the carpet patchwork Americana…it is in the whole basement.  I am saving a piece of it and framing it so I never forget it.  You can’t buy carpet like this nowadays :)

IMG 3475

The whole room was covered in paneling with a drop ceiling and very little light since there is no overhead lighting.

IMG 3476

It was very satisfying to tear down that paneling :)

IMG 4794

The older kids are learning to tape and mud!!!

IMG 4793

My new workout room…. I love it!

IMG 5346

We put in an exhaust fan and dimmable can lighting.  It is so fun to dim the lights and run while watching a movie.  It’s my own personal cardio cinema room :)

IMG 5349

The flooring we used is actually horse stall mats.  They are 3/4 inch thick rubber mats that are super heavy and awkward to carry but totally worth it!  They are about a third of the cost of the gym rubber floors :)

IMG 5128

I was going for more of a spa/zen like feel than a typical home gym.  The only problem is I tend to want to dim the lights, roll out my yoga mat and take a nap ;)

Does the idea of remodeling an entire home all on your own terrify you or excite you?

-Sissy: Excite.  Janae: Terrify.

What usually fills up your free time?

Would you like my sister to show you room by room her remodeling when she finishes them?  She is currently working on a bathroom and her kitchen:)

What is your workout today?

Nice to have unlimited time and money

Hey Tracy! Janae here! I thought I would clear some things up for you about my sister! My sister has 5 kids which means she has very little free time! She does her remodeling while her two toddlers are sleeping at night (instead of sleeping/relaxing herself)! She has turned this into her job and I am beyond proud of her. She took her last house and completely remodeled it all on her own with her husband on a limited budget. They were able to sell it and make money on it because of the hundreds of hours they spent on it and took that money right into this next home to remodel it. I’m amazed at how she has turned her passion into a way she can make money to help her family while at the same time taking care of five amazing kids! She is beyond talented and works harder than anyone I know! Have a beautiful day Tracy!

I’d like to know how one gets unlimited time and money! Lol. Pretty sure everyone has a limit on both! (But in all seriousness your sister and this remodel are amazing!!!)

Reply

What a talented and motivated sister!! Love the remodels. It was clear in the post that the remodels are being done in the hours after the kids are asleep … even if they weren’t, and someone did have unlimited time and money, who cares??? That IS nice! What a strange comment. I’m sorry people are silly, please keep sharing!!!

I hope Tracy’s day got better after she took her problems out on your blog! It must be so sad to feel so bad. Beautiful response, Janae :) and I do absolutely nothing when my two little girls are sleeping. You’re sister is incredible and so are you!!

Reply

Love it! It looks awesome! You are very good at design! And clearly do not require much sleep:)

Wow! You definitely have a gift! Remodeling a home is not quite part of my skillset. Plus, I’ve mainly done the apartment life. :)

My free time is mainly spent watching sports, spending time at the beach, and spending time with people. When I first moved to California a little more than a year ago and knew no one, I made it a priority to get to know people so that I would have a solid group of friends, and, for the most part, I continue to make spending time with people a priority. But I do make sure that I get some solitude time, which are times when I love going and just sitting on the shore and watching the waves roll in.

I would love to see more remodeling updates!

Terrifies me. I have a hard enough time doing (or hiring out) repairs. Wow! What a change! How big of a square did you save? That carpet is soooo cool.

Currently my free time is filled by my job hunt and waiting in line at school pickup (if you don’t get there by 2:20 you have to wait until 3:15 for pickup instead of 3, and if you don’t get there by 2 you don’t get to leave school pickup until 3:15 instead of 3:03. I like to get there as early as my schedule allows, brining something to read or watch, then watch excitedly for the reports from my Kindergartener.

Yes, please show us your future progress! I think house flipping is a very hard but rewarding way to make income :)

My workout today is breaking down camp (the first trip in our cricket camper) and unpacking/washing everything at home!

Less than two weeks until Halloween!!!

Yes! Love the remodeling posts because it gives me ideas for when I own a home someday

Excite. Looks great. Thanks for sharing.

Terrifies me. Can Sissy come visit me??
And please ignore the haters. I know how much is saved/budgeted/worked for to make this happen. And the gym membership and childcare costs saved by doing it. I’m not the only one either.

Reply

Love it!!! That’s going to be so nice in the winter.
House projects terrify me. But I have zero design skills. You should share some tips on how you come up with ideas (on a budget!) and where you find things!!

Reply

Sign me up to be on the terrified team!
Looks so good!! Definitely keep showing off the updates!
And do I remember hearing one of your sons is dressing up as Abe Lincoln for Halloween after visiting Springfield’s Lincoln Presidential museum? I’ll need to see that. And it is one of the best museums ever!

I have a very old condo, so I definitely want to remodel, but I think plaster is beyond my meager skills! But if Janae’s sister wants to come help out, I wouldn’t say no…;)

Awesome Job! I love reading both your posts! I have 2 sisters and I ABSOLUTELY love the sister love here!!

Wow, your sister truly has a gift. That room looks beautiful! I definitely look forward to seeing more of her remodels :) And also….please tell her that she is amazing and not many people I know can take on 5 kids and remodeling annnnd doing all the activities I see y’all doing!! Great job!!

To answer your questions->remodel excites me. My boyfriend is doing some house projects in his new home now and its so fun to help. I make some of my date nights helping remodel and thats super fun, and it seems like your sister does that too with her family so I think thats super cool. it’s nice to do an active project together as a family.

I wouldn’t say I have free time;) Between grad school, full time job, training for a sub 2 half, and boyfriend and friends, that pretty much takes up my time. But I like to run, have movie nights with my guy, binge watch Netflix if I have free time…:)

My workout today was 3 recovery miles + core work!

Hope you both have a lovely day!

Reply

This is beautiful! I can’t believe the transformation – and that someone would actually make their basement look like a boat! :) I would love to see her other projects.

Reply

Wow!! Are all women in your family super women?? I’m impressed, I would love to see more remodeling projects in here. I have zero skills and would be terrified of doing it myself, but I love seeing the before/after projects and hear about all the ideas, definitely taking note of the horse stall mats . Her little ones are so adorable and is so nice the older ones help out…

I m doing 2 miles easy, short swim and maybe weights today… im coming back after some time off, when the PT said I shouldn’t run that’s all I ever wanted to do, I felt like in a horror movie where the monsters were everyone out there enjoying their runs hahaha, and I could see them everywhere I went haha. Soooo dramatic. Now Im trying to keep the swimming and weights class haha, but I know those 2 miles are going to be the happiest ones…

Hope you are having an amazing holiday, and huuuuuge congrats for your marathon!!!

Reply

You did an amazing job!!!! Remodeling terrifies me but you have the gift! I totally want to see more pictures of roooms! And you are brave doing all of that with 2 toddlers in your house and I love that the big kids are learning too!

Reply

Congratulations on your new house!! That is quite a transformation! I can’t wait to see more. Please post all everything you do at the new place. I love that you got the big kids involved. That is an awesome skill to have.
We just bought a new house and are in the process of remodeling too, so I am very interested new ideas. I’m a little intimidated by all the work and picking out new stuff, but I’m lucky to have two sis-in-laws that are awesome with design and very willing to help. Now I’m thinking I need a home gym :)
Besides running, I like to read and learn new things, cook and play with my dog.
I’m hoping to get in my hill workout today. It’s been raining and flooding all week so I haven’t run outside because my bike sherpa (husband) would not enjoy a bike ride in the rain. I’ll go to the gym again if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

I love a good remodel project as long as I have lots of help because I like to think I know how to do all that but I really don’t ha!

Reply

Come do my house!! Wow I remember the last kitchen! So much work so yes please show us it all in your new home!
We flipped a property recently and it sold SO fast!

Love the updates! Remodeling both excites and terrifies me! My dad became our 3rd roommate for a few months and helped us completely remodel our bathroom. It was completely gutted and I’m so glad that we did that first. It was pretty awful, it had carpet in the bathroom, a very short toilet, low counters, and a shallow tub. The downside was that we only have 1 bathroom in the house, so for 2 weeks we had to use the park bathroom that was a block away and resorted to gym showers to clean up. My dad is a jack of all trades and handled the plumbing, electrical work, as well as all the installation and tiling. We also had plastered flower designs on the wall in our room and we sanded those down and then mudded all 4 walls and sanded them down (think mudding and taping drywall seams, except doing it on all 4 walls!) We hired someone to refinish our hardwood floors (there was carpet covering them) and got all new windows. May I ask how your sister learned to do everything? Did she have anyone help guide her who knew what they were doing? I can handle small projects, but i’d be afraid of larger projects without someone showing me what to do first.

Reply

That is awesome! Good job sissy!! And yes! Please share more pictures as the remodeling continues ?
I would love to remodel more of our house, but I’m a little nervous as to where to start. I guess just one room at a time ?

Your sister is amazing! Can i hire her?!!!! The thought of remodeling excites me buuuutttt it just hasn’t been a priority! I’ve had huge plans for our house but here we are 12 ish years later and only have new painted walls to show for it! Ha! I would rather be running or playing with my kids and my husband would rather do anything else! Ha! The remodel looks great and i would love to see more remodeling pics!
No workout for me …. I’m on day 5 (out of 5 ha!) of recovery and can’t wait to run tomorrow with a friend! I ran a 30k trail race on Saturday after running only 1 long run in training so I was very sore for the first couple days after but now I’m itching to get back out there!
Have a great day!!!

Reply

Braver woman than I! I have one kid and I can barely gather the energy to vacuum the carpet after she goes to bed. It looks awesome!

I always want to do a remodel but then when it comes around to actually doing it I just rather be doing something outside :) That’s usually what takes up my free time. Hiking, skiing, running, camping, etc.

Would love to see your sister’s house when she’s all done!!

And I did my long run at 4:30 this morning (13 miles!) since I’m out of town this weekend! I kind of love running alone in the dark (minus the scarecrow that startled me today and the rustling plastic bag the made my heart leap out of my chest). It’s so peaceful and it feels pretty bada$$ to be up and out at 4:30 am while the rest of the world is still asleep!

That room looks like a dream. Your sister is so impressive. I love her vision and her ability to make that vision become a reality.

Thank you for not deleting the negative comment above. Sadly is a good reminder for us that is a privilege that Janae and her family share their lives with us. They probably face negativity more than we realize.

If you feel the need to be negative -please continue to read this blog- maybe her positivity will rub off on you. But please keep the comments to yourself.

By the way- not a family member- never met any of them. Just an east coast long time reader who understands that while this is her business – this is our privilege to read.

Kindness matters above all.

Hi Bethny! HRG Mom here. I too believe that kindness matters above all. Thank you so much for your kind comment. You made Janae’s day for sure. Thank you for being a long time reader too! You rock!

Wow that remodel is FANTASTIC!!! I love it!! I would love to see more of her remodeling as she finishes :)

What fills up my free time? – – – – what free time, lol. I have an almost 13 year old middle school boy, so helping with homework, cooking dinner, cleaning etc. In what free time I have I do always get my workouts in and I scrapbook.

No workout scheduled for today as I have found that if I take off Thursdays and Fridays before my LONG run on Saturdays it always goes so much better, so that is what I have been doing :)

Reply

WOW! Amazing! Good for her. It terrifies me. We just built a house which is nice because everything is new but I don’t have a yard yet and my trees are tiny. I can see the appeal in remolding older homes in established neighborhoods. She needs to teach a class. :)

Reply

Sissy! Yes! I would love to see all the remodeling pictures. You are incredible at this. Well done! That rug is amazing! Haaa. I know Janae shared my before/after house pictures with you …and all of that was hired out. I think you would have loved every minute of the renovation :) I nearly had a breakdown and I didn’t actually DO any of the work. I absolutely LOVE my basement workout room and you will be in heaven this winter. SO nice to just stay in the dry and warmth.

Janae – have you already found a spot for your treadmill in your new home?

I spend my ALL of my free time walking my dog. I fear (although don’t really care, ha!) that I am known as the crazy lady who walks her dog all over town :) Although there are tons of us dog owners in the neighborhood (and most of them are friends now!). The dog has made me so social.

Truly, have a beautiful day. This blog makes me happy every single day and I appreciate and am grateful for all of the contributors.

Wow, that is the workout room of my dreams!!! The before pic alone would have made my day, but how cool to see the end result. HRG Sis, you are so talented! I would love to see more rooms. And so cool that you’ve got your kids involved, those are great skills to pass on. I’m more in the terrified camp. I don’t mind the work but I have zero vision and design skills. I’m happy to pay someone for that part :)

That is a sweet-looking workout room! I love that plant in the corner of the room.

My free time typically consists of a jog, blogging (it can sometimes be hard to get into the rhythm of posting, but it’s fun!), reading, or planning a trip with friends. Especially when it comes to planning a trip, it’s pretty neat to know that I have friends who are so down to travel (and happen to have a similar schedule to me)!

If the workout room is any indication, then definitely would like to see the rest of the remodeled rooms/areas!

My workout today will be a simulated 5K race on the track. I have a 5K coming up next month (mid-November), and I want to run it well. I also have a 5K this Saturday, but I’m not running it for a PR or anything like that. This Saturday’s race is just trying to remind myself what the adrenaline of race day feels like! I feel like I need to infuse my training with a race that I can use as motivation to help me run faster (by giving me healthy competition and allowing me to chase a rabbit – figuratively – for the race since I know there are plenty of people that will be faster than me)! :)

By the way, I love your positivity! It shines both in your posts and how you respond to some folks who don’t seem so… I don’t know… nice? “Haters gon’ hate”, so you keep doing you! Not everyone will understand that you as a person is more than just just your blog, so please keep up the good work. I’m sure that you’ve already impacted many people in a good way!

I am simply TERRIFIED of any kind of home fixing stuff. I have had a curtain rod that needs to be hung sitting around literally for over a month. I’m afraid it will be crooked, or the screws won’t be secure, or I might die… Yeah, dramatic I know… I do love seeing before and after pictures. Keep posting!!
I’m training for a half on Nov. 17th. Trying to finish before 2 hours. Your latest success still brings me to tears. AWESOME job!!

So awesome!!

Sissy, you are 100% amazing. I love your new workout room!!!

Would you be willing to talk dropped ceilings with me here? Our house has dropped ceilings in the basement too. I really do not like them for all the obvious reasons. However, one contractor said they are there for a reason like vents or pipes running across the drop space. Another contractor said they are always hiding some “trouble”. So we are afraid to try to change them.

Did you replace the tiles to make them cleaner? Ours seem to be aging or yellowing.

We did replace the downstairs bedroom ones and it was hard and they def did not go back up nicely and there is a little sag now. I’m terrified to do the family room ones now.

We also have dropped in the kitchen!!! We are replacing those with tin type tiles and I think those will be okayish.

So I guess my question is if you decided to keep the dropped ceilings why you chose to do so. If you kept them did you replace the tiles? Should I just adjust to dropped ceilings as retro cool?

Thanks for any advice or support (ha!) you can give.

Love it!! Looks so zen – I would definitely want to nap there too!!

I love the idea of doing a full room re-model like this but as someone who has never used more than a hammer construction-wise (ha! Lets be honest. It wasnt construction – i was hanging a picture..) I am so intimidated about starting a project. Any advice about how to start learning construction basics?

You are superwoman – Thanks for sharing!

looks awesome!! Is the wood style on the walls wallpaper or stickers or real wood? I love the idea of remodeling a whole house – i dream about being able to do that one day. I wanna see all the rooms when you’re done!

HRG Sis, you are simply amazing and so very talented!! Is there anything this wonderful family can’t do?! :) You are all so inspirational in every way. Would LOVE to continue to see the remodels ~ while I’m in the terrifying bracket, I love getting ideas for when I want someone to do it for me ~ ha ha. I also love you decided to go for the “spa” feel – it’s so fantastic and you deserve all the time you get to spend in your new space!
And thank you to Bethany for the reminder you posted!! I’m so thankful Janae and the rest of her family allow me to peek into their lives, inspiring me, making me laugh, smile, encouraging and motivating me towards my goals…It’s a gift.

Beautiful job on the workout room! ! And major congratulations to you Janae on your marathon!! You are both inspiring and impressive and I love your work ethic!!

I am not much of a remodeler. But I am always down to paint some furniture or walls! I helped my mom re-paint her whole house when I was like 34+ weeks pregnant last February because I was nesting and we lived in a rental that I couldn’t do much to! I would so love a workout room someday! The dimmable lights is such a great idea! Today I did a HIIT/lifting workout and went on a walk with a friend. I also cleaned the tub and made bread with my busy 18 month old so I am feeling like a champ this morning!

Reply

It looks beautiful!! You mentioned your sister sold her old house — I remember she shared a kitchen remodel on your blog awhile back — did they sell that house??? I wish we had a gym
in our house; this is totally inspiring me.

Reply

Wow! Awesome! please help me at my house! Remodeling does not sound like fun. After kids are in bed I want to be in bed too! When do you workout? Early in morning? Which is impressive if you’ve stayed up late remolding. Makes me feel lazy.

Reply

That is absolutely amazing! Please shoe us more before and afters—this is better than HGTV! :). I absolutely love your posts Janae but I also think your sister should do more posts as well! It’s so fun reading about both of you—thank you for sharing a part of your lives with us!!

Meant show not shoe :). I don’t mind others’ typos but it drives me crazy when I make one :).

Ahhh. The porthole design had me feeling anxious. I’m so relaxed now!

Holy smokes HRG sister – you are something else!!!! Let me tell you what I find extra special about your talent – your ability to take on huge projects and create beautiful spaces with extremely limited time and on a budget (I remember how smart you were financially with your kitchen remodel and the use of horse stall mats… brilliant!!). I just think you are super inspiring. Please continue to show us your remodels as you take on other rooms!! How was moving a family of 5? I am tired just thinking about it!

I personally love remodeling but am fearful to do projects myself so we often hire someone to do upgrades but really do our research on installation & material costs.

Thank you so much for sharing! I declare you the Utah version of Joanna Gaines! :) enjoy that work out space girl, you definitely deserve it!!!!

Reply

Great job on the home gym!! Looks amazing! What a transformation! We have a home gym in our garage. We also put down horse stall mats and they were so heavy! Hope you get lots of happiness & endorphins out of your new space!

Reply

It’s amazing to me there are some things that absolutely DRAIN me, that actually energize others. lol. Not to say Sissy wasn’t exhausted doing this remodel, but I also think it must invigorate her if she keeps doing it (otherwise she is insane! ;) ) I have a hard time visualizing something that turned out so beautiful out of something so…ummm… interesting. That is my problem. I don’t even see the potential.

My home gym has those same horse stall mats. I love them. My space looks NOTHING like that. It just looks like an extra room we decided to put exercise stuff in. Haha. I am actually still trying to decide on a paint color for the room. Maybe if you sister runs out of things to do (which I am sure happens with 5 kids) she can come help me out. I need all the help I can get ;)

Reply

Boats Boats Boats – ha ha. That room! Definitely an improvement! It amazes me what people can visualize and make happen. I’ve been in the same house for over 10 years now and still can’t decide what color to paint my bathroom!

Reply

This is beautiful! It definitely has a very calming, zen-like feel to it…I would have a hard time not rolling out my yoga mat for a very long savasana as well ;)

Recently my free time has been dedicated to thrifting and reselling and building my own blog/online boutique…website building is NOT intuitive to me so it has been quite the adventure haha. And I would LOVE to see more re-model posts — it gives me inspiration and it’s just awesome to see your sister showcase her eye for design, talent and pure drive :)

Today is a rest day for me…I’ll be back in the gym for strength training in the morning before work and then doing some beach runs this weekend. Hope the whole HRG family has a wonderful rest of the week!

Reply

I like the use of the wood as an accent, super pretty and calming.

I think it would be super cool to see a “tips and tricks” blog post about like, where do you go for the paint and why; what to look for when choosing a space to re-do; ways to get the kids involved by age/etc. Very interesting stuff and I am sure would inspire people to try this themselves!

It is super empowering to create your own space, and no matter what your budget is, I think we would all benefit from enhancing the space and people around us and encouraging them to be better. People that can see a space and see its potential, whether they are stay-at-home moms, working 3 jobs, or living on the NYC skyline, should be celebrated. Kudos to you Janae’s sister

Reply

Her work out “center” is AMAZING! Love that she made it warm feeling too! Some people just have an eye for these things, my hubs being one of them! I’m like send me away and bring me back when it’s all done! We just had our whole back yard dig up, a retaining wall built and now it should going to be a place we can escape to, can’t wait! Love that your sister enjoys this and look she helped make her family more money on the sale of their home, SMART!!!! Keep it up, sissy!!!!
Janae hope you guys are having a ball! Did all core today and took it outside since we woke up to 45 degrees!!!

I’d love to see more of her remodeling! I’m hoping to buy a house soon, so I can always use more ideas. For instance, I’d worried about what I could use for flooring in a workout room of my own, so the horse stall mats are an awesome idea. I didn’t even know they were a thing!

The room is beautiful, by the way, and it’s great that the kids helped.

My workout was post-natal yoga and my FIRST post-partum run! Mostly it was a walk/jog and super short, but you gotta start somewhere!

That room is amazing! I would love to know what you used for the wood on the walls.

I want to get some horse stall mats for my little room in the basement too. Then maybe get a squat rack and treadmill for a mini workout room. The transformation looks amazing. Also great to teach your kids how to remodel young. I wish I knew more as I just got my first house, but I will learn.

Can you come do that for me!? I think that would definitely help me want to run on my dreadmill.. :) I am in love with the spa like look

Incredible job!!! Thanks for sharing the tip about the horse stall pads, I am in the process of doing my workout area in the basement and have been looking at the traditional pads. I will for sure be checking these out. Did you get them at a local place or some place like Amazon (if they sell those?)?

Also, great job responding to that negative comment, you’re incredible and handled that so well!

Hi! I met you briefly at the St. George Utah marathon. During the race my sister kept commenting that she only picked this run because she followed you. She had an eating disorder and your blogs helped her recover. She was mostly happy at the end of her first marathon to get to meet you in person. Thankful I got to see someone that helped bring my town sister back to life (literally). Congrats on the sub 3. You rock!

Would love to win some shoes or some cash to add to my running wardrobe.

Your sister is awesome!! Yes, I want to hear all about her remodel! :) And that’s a great tip on the horse floor mats! I would have never thought of that. I plan to buy a house/have a home gym in the next couple years, so that’s great advice!

Also…a BOAT ROOM?!?!?! hahahaha ahoy matey!
