13.1 miles before getting Brooke off to school. Skye woke up at 4:38 to eat and I couldn’t fall back asleep after trying for a while (probably because I have been forcing myself to go to bed so crazy early the last few days) so I got out a bit earlier than usual for my run. It worked out nicely because it was a longer run than I usually do during the week.
Beretta joined me for the warm-up. She hasn’t quite worked up to interval paces but give her a few more weeks and she can join me for that too. She was so excited to go that when I opened the door (with the leash wrapped around me) she sprinted out like a bullet. I don’t know how I didn’t fall over but I’m lucky I didn’t. One day I’ll remember that she always runs out fast and plan around that.
I stuck to a very flat course for this workout and the w/u and c/d aren’t included in splits below. After the warmup I accidentally pushed save so I had to start all over.
2 w/u miles @ 8:21 and 8:33
Drop Beretta off and run inside to get water for her
3 miles —> 6:47, 6:50, 6:45
3 minutes —> 8:31 pace
3 miles —> 6:43, 6:40, 6:37
3 minutes—> 9:08 pace

13.1 miles total @ 7:07 average pace. 6:49 average pace for the 10.1 miles of the workout portion.
I was very surprised how smooth and in control those 3 mile intervals felt. I’m getting excited…
Turns out that trying new things during training is amazing. I don’t know why I haven’t played around more with things in previous marathon training cycles because I can’t believe what a difference it has made this time around. I swear I just keep finding better and better things.
This water bottle is perfect. I love my handheld one but I don’t love holding things while running so now I have a water bottle that just goes into my belt… it’s perfect. I completely forgot it was in there until I needed a drink. I didn’t have to stop to get water and just pulled it out (I did stop once for about 2 seconds because it is a little trickier to get back in but practice will make that easier). I couldn’t even feel it. I wore it on my back and I am so happy about this thing. The bottle has a small curve in it to fit your body better. This will be joining me for the marathon.
I also tried UCAN and absolutely loved it. I might be one of those people that does much better with UCAN/Tailwind for my calories before a race vs food. I am going to try out eating some oatmeal or toast 2 hours before my next long run (go back to bed) and then use UCAN or Tailwind before I start along with a gel and then practice using a gel and UCAN during the run for nutrition. It wasn’t until yesterday when I realized how good my stomach felt that I figured out a banana/sandwich 30-60 minutes before a run might not be the best thing for me. I’m still getting in the same amount of calories with the UCAN or Tailwind before but I felt a million times better this way.
Also, my nanohydr8 is a new thing this training cycle and that has been really great. I might just use it two more times before the taper and then during the taper have 0 caffeine so that it really works well on race day.
***Tangent—> Kathy said something that I loved yesterday and I think it is true for 99% of my runs: “Don’t trust the first mile.” <—How many times has that first mile made me think that I am going to feel terrible and not hit my goals and then once I’m warmed up, the run goes great. Don’t trust it!!
Andrew went on his run, Brooke went to school and then we all went to see Dr. Bennett (801-513-1078). I’ve been going to him for over 4 years now and I have never had a serious injury (except for turf toe but that was from landing really weird during a run) since… and I had a million before him. He helped me yesterday to get my right hip to pick up the slack again and balance things out. As I was walking in, Josse was walking out haha… he is getting her all good to go for the marathon too.
And then I sat in the back on the way home to help make sure that Skye got a nap at home and not in the carseat (because transferring does not happen anymore). She was so confused to see me back there with her.
When your lunch takes two dinner plates… Brooke thinks I am breaking the law by using ketchup with my eggs but I don’t think I could eat eggs without ketchup.
You don’t randomly find avocado on your kneecap an hour after eating it too?
After the kids were done with school we watched my niece’s volleyball game…
Right before we got there my sister’s husband sent me this hahaha! There is so much truth to this.
And then it was off to Brooke’s soccer game.
I think she was a little bored being the goalie. She started doing cartwheels at one point.
She enjoyed the running around the field part much more.
Knox found ways to entertain himself during the game.
Skye did too.
And then after the game we grabbed a Frosty. I love waiting until my ice cream is a little bit melty (and I’m that weirdo that loves soggy cereal too) so I eat around the outsides of my ice cream first because that part melts first.

I love that–do not trust the first mile. I will probably be repeating that as a mantra on my next run! I also like chocolate/vanilla twist. Soggy cereal is a no-go for me. And I prefer salsa on my eggs. Throw in a little guacamole and I’m in heaven. Happy a wonderful day!

That quote about not judging your run based on the first mile is SO TRUE. I ran a 12 miler here in Baltimore over the weekend and didn’t really feel prepared and honestly the first mile was HARD. But I started warming up after another half mile. I pushed through it then started feeling amazing the rest of the race and got a PR!!
Also I love ketchup and salsa on my eggs – I switch it up all the time!

Okay, so I am definitely stealing that workout- that sounds like an amazing way to tempo but not like, lose your mind thinking about 10 miles of nothingness.
I say that the fitter you get, the longer it takes to warm up – it helps me feel better about myself when 3 miles into a run I still don’t feel good and I kinda think its true! During a good cycle, it takes about 30 minutes to feel good – during the holidays when I take a step back, it takes 10 minutes. There is 0 science to back this up.

I’m definitely a vanilla girl and like my shakes partially melted, especially from Chick-fil-A. They have THE BEST ice cream and shakes. I’m not a big ice cream person (I prefer froyo), and Chick-fil-A’s is pretty much the only one I like (because California doesn’t have Blue Bell out here).
Ketchup on eggs is an absolute must! Although, I do eat ketchup on almost everything. :) Hope you have a great day, my friend!!

My first mile today was terrible and I felt defeated, but then finished with a total of 4. The last 3 were SO much better! I got into my show and I think my body realized what was happening it was 5:30am. LOL
I love vanilla with sprinkles…now I really want DQ which is what happens to me on days I run early. EAT ALL DAY! I don’t like soggy cereal at all, it reminds me of oatmeal and I am not a fan.

Where did you get your individual packs of UCAN to try? I looked on Amazon but didn’t see a variety pack. I want to try all the flavors haha! I am always open to trying new things but I tend to revert back to lemon lime Gatorade. I know there is a ton of debate on whether Gatorade is too sugary or whatever but it settles well in my stomach and I always feel good when I drink it and I personally don’t crash from it. I’m open to new/different things though! It takes me about 1 mile to feel warmed up on a run but when I have a 2 mile warmup that’s even better! :D

Kudos to you!!! I think those mid-week long runs are the very hardest to do, even harder than speedwork. It’s just hard to fit them in—so much easier on the weekends!!!! You deserved at least two plates of food for lunch!!!!!!!

Just a little salt on my scrambled eggs, but for some reason plain eggs can make me feel a bit “gaggy” and I usually eat them with bacon or English muffin–don’t even know why that helps.
Warming up depends on how far I’m going, but at least a half mile to a mile before I get in a groove.

I always go for the twist ice cream cones, and only certain cereals are ok soggy (captain crunch for example or you won’t be eating comfortably for the next week)
It takes me about a mile to feel good. Which makes racing 5ks that much trickier haha

Hey Collette!! I am so so sorry about your injury! He is in pleasant grove on Wednesday’s. He is a chiropractor (although the things he does to fix our injuries is much different than what you would think of a normal chiropractor doing)… he works on all of the BYU athletes and specializes with runners. Good luck! I can’t recommend him enough! He completely changed my running and the fact that I was injured every other month!

Twist cones have been a favorite of mine since I was little :) If I ever have one now, I feel like I’m 8 again.
Running is funny: Sometimes it takes me barely a half mile to feel warmed up and good, other times it takes me 2-3 miles, and even some runs I never feel warmed up and good. But on average, for me 1-2 miles in and then I’m really ready to keep going.
I know “we all” keep saying this, but you are really killing your training this time around!! It will be so fun to see how amazing you do at St. George!!! I’m excited for you!

What was the last new-to-you running product/fuel that you used? I think my most recent new running product would have to be my goodr running sunglasses which I absolutely LOVE. The fit perfectly, keep the sun out of my eyes, and most importantly DO NOT SLIP!
Chocolate or vanilla frosting/ice cream? Soggy cereal… terrible or delicious? Umm … I prefer Vanilla Ice Cream & Frosting … Vanilla Ice Cream needs to have something in it though i.e. cookie dough, m&m’s, broken candy bits, etc. or else I am just not as interested. I also like my Ice cream Soft so I can mix the candy bits in. I also have a love love relationship with soggy cereal. I think soggy LIFE cereal is one of my favs.
Ketchup, salsa or other with your eggs? KETCHUP … ALWAYS!! Is it even possible to have eggs without Ketchup. I would also recommend you try out this Salsa … http://mamacssalsa.com/ it is made in the area my mom lives in and is made by a mom&pop company.
How long does it usually take you to start feeling warmed up on your run? It takes anywhere from 2-3 miles for my legs to warm up and start ticking over … I am in full agreement that the first mile or two are complete LIARS!!

I feel like such an old fogey for admitting this, but I recently started using the Runkeeper app and love it! I haven’t been in “hardcore” training mode for a couple years now due to infertility, then pregnancy, and now breastfeeding, so I haven’t worn my Garmin or kept a running journal. But, the app is super convenient and gives me numbers without making me go nuts. I’m sure you understand what I mean ;)
Usually chocolate, and YES to melted ice cream and soggy cereal. When I was a kid, I used to wait until my Fruity Pebbles formed a pastey substance before eating them. My whole family was so grossed out by this.

Ahh thank you! Just ordered the water bottle. I think I figured out that my handheld water bottle was causing my hip flexor to hurt in the hand I carry it in. Might not be the cause but I’m going to say it is and hope this water bottle solves all my problems!

I realized I put my email address in wrong, so I never saw that you had responded. Whoops! I went to a podiatrist and wore a stabilizing boot for like a month. That didn’t seem to help, so eventually I got a cortisone shot. That seemed to help for a while, but it never completely went away. Lately it’s been pretty painful. Thank you for responding! You give me hope that this can go away, haha!

i am totally indifferent to vanilla or chocolate ice cream, but not familiar with a “frosting” version – soggy cereal is terrible, i’m always trying small bowls so i can finish it while it’s still good and crunchy :)

-I always used sport jelly beans when I was marathon training. It was the one thing that didn’t upset my stomach. But the chewing wasn’t my favorite…
