We went camping and it was really great.  The stars were unreal and spending so much time outdoors together was the best.

Beretta was thrilled to come and she ran around like crazy.  She also thought that she deserved some of Brooke’s Capri Sun.

IMG 1883

S’mores for breakfast?  Isn’t that just a necessary part of camping.

Our kids are weird about their s’mores and they barely cook their marshmallows.  I need my marshmallow to be golden brown and very melty and gooey in the middle.

IMG 1863

PS Have you ever tried a roasted Starburst?  They are delicious.

We made it home around lunchtime and got the laundry going and showers before heading off to church.

IMG 1891

It was the first day ever that all 5 of us had clean hair on the same day.

IMG 1904

For dinner we had my parents over and we made spaghetti and meatballs (with ground turkey).

IMG 1930

Skye woke up from her nap after dinner (we had an early dinner) and she was so happy to see my mom and dad at our house.

IMG 1933

They brought us delicious ice cream for dessert.

IMG 1935

And then we went on a walk.

IMG 1948

That 20 miler (and camping;) has left me exhausted.  Today will involve an easy run and lots of time just hanging on the ground with the kids.  This training (how do people run 100+ miles a week?!?) is no joke but I can officially say that my marathon is next month now that it is September.

IMG 1951

——————————————————————————-

I’ve got a few things to talk to you about today:

*My friend used this awesome water bottle that fit into her running belt during her 20 miles.  It is even curved so that it is shaped to wear in your belt.  I just ordered one and I am excited to see how it feels to run with in the belt that I’m already wearing during the run.

IMG 1548

*Candice made this bowl of heaven (Sweet Holiday Chex Mix) and I could not believe how delicious it was.  Try it asap.

IMG 1841

*My brother sent me this picture of my niece at her last cross-country race.  He said it was an extra hot day and super muggy.  I love how I can see how strong and determined she is.  I can’t wait for them to live in Utah (next year) and get to run with my niece below and her sister.

IMG 1890

*I love both of these things from Kara’s book so much.

IMG 1913

*Okay, you can’t really see it that well in this light but I burned my arm on a curling iron two years ago and there is still a huge mark on my arm.  For some reason I thought it would have gone away but it sure hasn’t.

IMG 1912

*Random picture time.  I came across this photo and remembered it from a night where Andrew and I both thought we were not into each other (hence sinking into my friend’s couch and giving my best fake smile).  We were texting (it was the day after our first date) and I was texting through my computer and for some reason when I left my house, the new texts that he had sent weren’t going to my phone.  While I was gone I thought he was over texting me (I had asked for a picture of Beretta and I was thinking maybe I must have crossed the line ha) and he sent the picture (and it went to my computer not my phone but I was gone at this point and he thought I stopped texting him because I didn’t think Beretta was cool enough).  Five hours later when I went back home and saw his text messages on my computer I was so relieved that he wanted to keep talking ha.

IMG 6301

*I NEED YOUR THOUGHTS.  Who has used UCAN?  What did you like about it?  What didn’t you like about it?  I’m wondering if I should try it asap and see if it can help me on race day!

Have any curling iron burns/random scars etc?  What from?

If you have used UCAN please give me your thoughts on it!!  I’m trying to perfect my nutrition game for this marathon.

What are your Labor Day plans?!

What is your run today?

Not sure if you have ever listened to the Marathon Training Academy podcasts but they absolutely swear by UCAN (and if you don’t listen to their podcasts you should, they are awesome!)

No run today for me I don’t think, hopefully some cross training :) I’m coming back to running after having my 2nd kiddo and i’m still completely sore after my 1st postpartum run on Saturday haha!

Reply

Thanks to you I just listened to an episode by them on my run this morning and it was SO good. Thank you!! CONGRATS on baby #2! I am so happy for you and way to go on your first postpartum run! Keep me updated on how you are doing Theresa!

When I use generation UCAN I feel like I can fly. I used it about 30’ before speed workouts/harder efforts and I would make it a gel that I would eat while doing a long run. It was gentle on my stomach. I love it so much. The taste took a little getting used to, I got the smaller packets and tried every flavor before buying a bigger container. For a short period of time I used the protein one after workouts and I do think it helped me recover but it got a little expensive! Good luck with your marathon! I know you will have about amazing race :).

Reply

Really!?! This is so good to hear. Okay… if you have a second could you let me know how you make it into a gel? I am so glad it was so good on your stomach too! THANK YOU and thanks for taking the time to share your experience with me. Have a wonderful day!

I would love to hear more about how you use the Nano Hydrate stuff and Tailwind and if you do use the Ucan like how you use it and when. I’m curious because I typically get up and hour 1/2 before I need to run and eat a slice of toast with peanut butter or jelly on it, drink coffee and I take my Tailwind with them in my bottle and drink it during my run. Now I’m wondering if drinking it before I run is better? This stuff is all so confusing to me and I know everyone is different but gels tear me up. Did you drink that Tailwind an hour before? See then my problem would be having to pee so bad while i’m running hahahah. Thanks for any detail. gina

Reply

Hey Gina!! This stuff really is all so confusing and hard to figure out. I actually drank my tailwind on the way to my run… so maybe 10-20 minutes before starting!? I take Nanohydr8 RIGHT before I start running (like seconds and sometimes I do it after the warmup and right before the hard miles start). Maybe drinking it before and during would work for you. I hear you on gels, humas are so much better for me than gu but I am wondering if drinking my calories is my best option. Keep me updated with how you are doing! You’ve got this!

I bought ucann at the San Francisco marathon expo. It’s amazing. Like magic.

Reply

AWESOME!!! Thank you for telling me you love it. I think I’m going to go for it. Have a wonderful day and the San Francisco marathon is gorgeous!

I’m running for a very good Division 2 Cross country Team and we use UCAN to fuel and hydrate us before late track meets, during workouts (we usually do 10+ miles in a single workout) and before races. I love it and have never had any stomach issues with it. I also really like the mellow, not too-sweet taste of it and the fact that it really doesn’t give that high-and-crash like other sportsdrinks.
I would definitely get the berry-flavoured one instead of orange or cinnamon. It’s way better!!! Oh and you can also adjust the concentration very well based on your needs and it still tastes amazing even when double diluted…

Reply

This is so good to hear… thank you Hanna! I’ll try out the berry flavoured one! HANNA… YOU ARE AMAZING!!! Very good Division 2 Cross Country Team—> Send me any amazing tips you have on racing:) Have a wonderful day!

That first pic of you guys in your hats has me SO EXCITED for cooler weather! Bring on the fall colors, jackets, and boots!

I have a random scar on my forearm because I didn’t have the cap on our clothing steamer and it leaked out and burned a little streak on my arm.

Reply

YESSSS it was really chilly up in the mountains and it got me really excited. AHHHHHH oh that sounds so so painful!!! I hope your day is a beautiful one Laura!

Reply

Oh my gosh… I burnt the inside of my thigh with my curling iron when I was in 8th grade, and you can still see a light scar!! I’m 46!!! Weird!
Yesterday was my long run day (10 miles)love, so today is a rest day. Todayy be filled with getting stuff done around the house, then pool time and my husband’s best grilled steaks!!
Have a wonderful Labor Day!!

Reply

AHHHHH NO WAY!!! That must have been a terrible burn Wendy, ouch! Way to go on your 10 miles yesterday and enjoy that steak (I’m drooling just thinking about it)! Thanks Wendy, you too!

Reply

My husband swears by UCAN. He has tried numerous other drinks/gels/gummies, but he always goes back to UCAN! Definitely give it a try!

Reply

REALLY!?!? Okay, this makes me really happy… I can’t wait to try it! Thanks Amanda and have a fabulous day!

Reply

My sister in law makes that Chex mix and it amazing!

No big plans today. Probably will clean the house and hopefully find something else to do too!

Reply

I just cleaned the house too… it feels so good now. Have an amazing day Jenny!

Love the s’mores photos! So cute. Ucan worked fine for me, but I could only use it before the race because I didn’t want my family to have to rush around to different parts of the course (especially at a world major marathon) and stress about getting me a bottle. That said, I’d rather eat real food pre-race over drinking something. Bagels > liquid

Reply

Oh that makes a lot of sense… wouldn’t it be nice if they just let all of us put our water bottles on different tables. That is true about real food… I’m just wondering if I should do bagel/oatmeal along with tailwind or UCAN?! SO MANY HARD DECISIONS!! PS what world major marathons have you done, that is awesome!

Reply

Just a scar on my face when my brothers plotted to throw a cat at my face when I was four.
And I can’t wait to read your review on that water bottle! I might need it!!

Reply

YOUR BROTHERS DID THAT!?!? NOOOOOOO!!!

Reply

Hahaha I’m dying at “can I see a pic of your dog” oops must’ve crossed the line it’s over

Sadly as most of us know some guys COULD be turned off by this. Glad Andrew is not a game player!!

Reply

HAHAH seriously… I thought for sure he must have thought I was asking him to marry him or something by asking for the picture;) Have an amazing day Sara!

Reply

Oh that’s so funny in hindsight about your text misunderstanding!! So glad it worked out! :)
I have a random scar on my hand from the refrigerator shelf. Those things are sharp! It was such a deep cut, I’m sure the scar will be there forever.
We are headed to the bees game for Labor Day and I’m hoping to get a run in this evening when it cools down. :) have a good day!

Reply

A refrigerator shelf… I had no idea they were so sharp!! Enjoy the bees game, that is such a good idea…. maybe we will have to come do that too:) Thanks Laura, you too and enjoy a cooler run!

Love Skye’s red nose in your camping picture. You and I may not agree on olives, but I am totally with you on gooey marshmallows for S’mores! Les likes to set his marshmallows on fire.

I’ve never used UCAN, but I think Meb uses it so it must be great!

Last barbecue of the summer today and I’m putting my Fall decorations out, which means it will probably go back into the 90s in the next few days.

No run today, I rode 20 miles on my bike. I ran 8 miles on Saturday – the last time I went that distance was the day I sprained my ankle. I’m so slow but I know you’re only suppose to add distance OR speed, not both at once. It just feels good to be active again!

PS – Les, his brother and 6 other guys are headed to Utah on Saturday. They will be riding their bikes starting in St. George. I’m not exactly sure of their route, but they are riding for a week with a few hikes thrown in. If Les decides to blog about I’ll share the link with you.

Reply

Ohhh Andrew does too with his marshmallows. Enjoy your barbecue today and all of the fall decorating! I am so so excited about his adventure in Utah! I would love to read about it if Les writes a post! So fun. You are back up to 8 already?! You are rocking it Kathy!

How does camping work with Skye? Where does she sleep? I’m impressed with you doing that after your 20 miler! And your church is in the afternoon??

Reply

Our church has all sorts of different times that you can go to. We usually go to one time each week but we got back a bit later so we did another time:) We just brought a little pack and play type thing for her! Thanks and have a wonderful day!

Reply

Skye in that little winter hat = adorable! Glad you could get out for a quick family camp trip. And your niece is a rockstar! How fun that they will be close next year. She’s going to love running in the Utah fall temps!

Reply

Thank you so much Michelle! I agree, that little hat killed me:) I really can’t wait for them to be here. Have a beautiful day Michelle!

I use UCAN before all my races. I take it plain for very short/intense races, or with a banana for longer ones. It is a good way to get calories in the morning without risking upsetting my stomach. I know one person who uses it as pre-race dinner so she can sleep better (no digestion problems at night). It is worth picking up a few packets to try it! It’s a lot more palatable if you blend it with ice in a blender.

Reply

Really!? Okay, this is so good to hear. oh I’m interested about the pre-race dinner too… I wonder how many calories she gets in for her dinner with it?! I picked up a few and good call on the ice/blender. Thanks Victoria. I hope you have a wonderful night!

I LOVE Ucan. Used it for my last training cycle and marathon. It is amazing. It is a slow release carb so keeps you fairly steady for a good while. Never upsets my stomach. It is not super delicious and has a bit of a chalky taste but it works. My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes a year ago so I have learned a massive amount about slow release and quick release carbs. This stuff was actually developed by a father for his type 1 diabetic child so that’s why I tried it in the first place. I drink this before the marathon and then use fast acting gels during and it works great :)

Reply

Thank you so much Donna for sharing all of this with me. I am very excited to try it! That is so interesting! So do you eat any real food too before the marathon or just the UCAN and if so, how many calories worth? Thanks for your help!

Reply

I usually eat a few mini blueberry muffins before the race as well. That with 3 scoops of UCAN is about 450 calories and seems to start me off good!

Reply

Thank you so much for telling me this!! I appreciate your help!

Reply

I have used UCan and I think it works! I mix a scoop of chocolate with vanilla Greek yogurt. I do not like it mixed with water. It was convenient when I traveled to marathons because you buy it individual packets and you guy get Greek yogurt anywhere. Sometimes in pinch, I even eat if for breakfast (because who doesn’t need energy for a class of first graders).

You are rocking your training!! It’s so fun to follow along with you. Good luck with figuring out the fueling!!!

Reply

Oh this is awesome! Good to hear about using it with greek yogurt, I’ll have to try that! You teach first graders…. oh I knew I liked you:) Thank you for doing what you do, I feel so grateful to Brooke’s teacher. Thank you Katie and I hope you have a wonderful week!

I bought UCAN thinking it would be a miracle, then I sort backed down and chickened out because it just sounded so starchy and I don’t love Stevia. So, this summer as my 50k approached I had a huge dilemma on what to train with for long runs (it really shouldn’t have stressed me out so much but it did) I ended up using Tailwind + water (remember, tailwind is fuel, not hydration). I knew that during our event I’d be eating solids so didn’t worry too much about it, just during training and practicing to have additional fuel. I am appreciating all the positive feedback on UCAN so perhaps I CAN (ahahhaha) try it now. I’m such a chicken to try stuff.

Today was a rest day so went to the chiropractor, ran a few errands.

Skye’s nose is so cute camping!

I still have a burn on my head from a hair highlighting incident 25+ years ago!!!

Reply

50K… YOU ARE AMAZING. Wow. I love Tailwind… it felt so good on my stomach last weekend! I’m glad you had it all figured out. I’m going to try it this week and let you know my thoughts on UCAN! 25 years ago… you were burned big time. Enjoy the rest of your day and thanks Kelly!

I used to work at the Outback Steakhouse and have a scar from burning my wrist on their bread oven. I think every one of their employees, past and present, have an identical scar. That bread is good, though!
I set out for an easy 2-3 miler with my little guy in the stroller, and he ended up falling asleep. So, I kept going… until he woke up at 9 miles. We have done stroller runs that long before, but I just did one on Saturday, and it was HOT here today. I’m proud of myself for gutting it out!
Hot dogs and corn tonight!
And I haven’t tried UCan (I’m a Heed person, myself), but have heard good things.
PS: Nice job on that 20 miler!

Reply

STACEY!! Hey you! Oh that burn sounds terrible! That bread really is so so so good and I’ll think of you now every time I eat it. Way to go on 9 miles with your little man in the stroller (pushing the stroller means that was equivalent to running 15 miles in my opinion). Thank you and I hope you are having a great night!

My weekend long run happened this morning. The weather prevented it from happening sooner. And having the day off today helped me fit it in. It was a 5 mile run (which sounds like nothing when I think of your 20 miles this weekend). I’m now jealous of those who get to run in the morning. The weather was so much cooler. It was the longest run of my training so far (I’m only on week 4) and it was the best run of my training. It’s amazing how the weather can dictate how you feel out there.

And your 20 miles this weekend was amazing! You rocked it and it is so fun following along with your training! As a amateur I like getting all your tips and recommendations!

Reply

GO JENNIFER GO!!! That is AWESOME!! Oh I wish you were able to run in the morning more often! The fact that you run later on in the day means you are hardcore… between the heat and being tired, I don’t think I could run past 11 a.m. in the morning. You are strong. Keep me updated with all of your training and how things are going! Have a great night!

I use UCAN for all my marathons, including my PR marathon. I use 2 scoops 90 minutes prior and maybe another one 30-45 minutes before the start. I never used gels or gus, just alternated gatorade and water at every aid station on the course, since they’re usually a mile apart. I had one bottle on the course one year, and I missed it, so I wasn’t able to even get any during the marathon. But I have made it into a paste/gu and carried it with me to use by mile 16 or so.
Good luck trying it:)

Reply

Okay, hearing from YOU made my day. I am your #1 fangirl. THANK YOU for letting me know what you do… I will be trying that out on Saturday. Any other tips for me… I just think you are the greatest!

I have no burn scars BUT I do have a few scars on my forehead from when my head met the head of my brother’s golf club when I was about 4. I am now 28 and that scar is going NO WHERE! I guess I have learned that I need to step a few hundred feet back when he is swinging his golf clubs! lol

NO running today. I ran a bit too much over the weekend so I took it to the spin bike. I will probably spin for the rest of the week! I need to lay off the knee so I can run again this coming weekend!!

Reply

Ahhh, thanks:) You’ve got this marathon – no stress:) Sub 3 is all yours.
UCAN is definitely great. It’s been my go to for years. You can make the paste out of it if you don’t want to drink a bunch and have it sloshing around by just adding a little bit of water to it, until it’s the consistency you like. And it’s easier to carry with you in a marathon. I am a big fan of glycogen depleted long runs – but not when there is a workout in the long run, so UCAN is great for those. I’m not super familiar with your training or nutrition, but Mary knows her stuff. You are in great hands. Make sure you are getting plenty of protein:) Rooting for you

Reply

I used UCAN for my two best marathons to date :) Here is a snippet of what I wrote about using it (also just to clarify, I don’t count calories or macros ever, but pre-race and during the race I wanted to know exactly what I was getting in):

Pre-race I took in between 300 and 400 calories, which is what my coach recommended. I had some yogurt, a banana, one packet of UCAN (vanilla protein) with 20 oz. of water, a small (probably 4 oz.) cup of coffee and a cup of water with an electrolyte tablet. By my calculations, this was about 375 calories, 7g of fat, 53g of carbs and 19g of protein. This was more than I typically take in before my long runs, but we also didn’t start running until close to 10 a.m. and I usually run at 6 a.m., so I knew that I needed to eat more beforehand than I do on a typical long run day.

During the race I alternated with water and Gatorade Endurance Formula at the aid stations. Basically I tried to take a few sips of something every 20 to 30 minutes. I took water at mile three, Gatorade at mile seven, water at mile 11 and Gatorade at mile 15. I mixed more UCAN with about 12 oz. of water that morning (not the protein blend). I drank half of the bottle at mile 18 and finished the rest of it around mile 22. This was about 200 calories and all carbs (approximlatey 50g) during the race itself.

Hopefully this helps!

Reply

I have been using UCAN for almost a year now and I LOVE it! I actually do 3 scoops mixed with water before a marathon, and I also carry a gel made out of it so I can take it around mile 17. I try and eat 2 hours before the race (bagel with peanut butter) and then take the UCAN 30 minutes before the race. I get the chocolate flavor because it kinda tastes like chocolate pudding lol.
