Stories from My Phone + Help Me out on This.

I’ve got a few stories and pictures/screenshots from my phone that I wanted to share with you today!

*We got one of our family pictures back from Andrew’s amazing cousin and it makes me really happy.

*I love the Hansons Half Marathon Method and Marathon Method (two of my favorite running books)… they have a new book coming out soon and I’m sure it is amazing if you are thinking about running your first marathon!  I love their training plans and this book has one too:

Screen Shot 2018 08 13 at 9 31 17 AM

*Getting Skye dressed or changing her diaper has turned into quite the workout.  This girl is ALL OVER the place and wiggles right away when trying to get her clothes on.

IMG 9228

*Well, I love Allie Kieffer even more now… I wrote her a message to see if she could add her power bun tutorial to her story highlights and she wrote back the nicest messages.  For those of you that missed that… she has them there now so we can all copy her.  PS Andrew may have teased me for how excited I was that she wrote me back.

IMG 9404

*Every time we stay at my in-law’s house Brooke goes on a bike ride to visit the horses near them.

IMG 9406

*Turns out Beretta loves those little baby puffs.  Skye recognizes her love for the puffs and is very willing to share.  Look at Beretta licking her lips.

IMG 9283

*My nephew has been talking about how he wants to be Abe Lincoln for Halloween non-stop.  They went to the Abraham Lincoln museum this summer and that is all he can think about.  They weren’t able to find an Abe costume so he settled on Batman.

IMG 9328

*For my sister’s youngest she has had to get very creative.  During the night he loves to take off his pjs and make some messes;)  So she cut off the arms (because it is summer) and feet of his pajamas so that she could put them on backwards with the zipper in the back.  Now he can’t get out of them.  #Lifehack.

IMG 9327

*Andrew took the girls on a date this last weekend so I could sleep (aka the theme of my weekend).  These two sure love him.

IMG 9425

*Skye’s hair is long on the top and short on the sides everywhere but one spot on the left side of her head.

IMG 9090

*I also did her first braid ever yesterday on the top so that was pretty thrilling.

IMG 9497

*My cute mother-in-law has run the St. George Marathon two times in the past!  Andrew has finished it three times (with his longest training run being 10 miles;) and this will be my third year there!  Another reason I love this marathon… it’s kind of a family thing.

IMG 8927

*Gwen Jorgensen shared a video of what her marathon training for her fall marathon looks like.  Just a bit different than my marathon training;)  I find it so interesting to see all that goes into these world class athlete’s training.

*I love charts/graphs/running data.  Suzy told me about Runworks and they have a ton of fun calculators there including one that can give you equivalent finish times for courses at different elevations!  I need to get to sea level!

Screen Shot 2018 08 11 at 7 04 24 PM

*Andrew just started a home health rotation so his shifts are 8 hours instead of 12 hours for a little while.  This way we get to see him for a bit before he leaves!

He graduates in February so he is getting really close to being done!

IMG 9479

*No run for me yesterday but I did feel a lot better which was nice.  I spent a lot of the day still resting… I did try to go out for a walk but we went right back inside quickly because although it didn’t look smoky out, the air was terrible.   I better start loving the treadmill again because I’ll be getting in some quality time with her this week.   I have 50 miles in the next 5 days to get in!

And yes, she yanked my hair as hard as she could right after I snapped this picture.

IMG 9476

*Brooke’s very first lunch box ever arrived (she got this one and it comes with the cutest little bento box too).  I asked the school if I could come eat lunch at the school every day with her but they advised me not to (okay, I didn’t but I wanted to).  I would love to hear from any of you parents reading, what kinds of things you pack in your kids lunches each day!

Lunch ideas for Brooke to take to school… She is not very picky so send over any and all ideas that you might have:)

-I remember if my mom put Dunkaroos in my lunch during elementary school then it was the highlight of my month.

Anyone else in school right now?  How long until you graduate?

Any new life hacks that you’ve figured out lately?

If you could go for a run with one elite (in the past or present) athlete, who would it be?

LOVE that precious family photo!! And so exciting that Andrew is SO CLOSE to being finished with school!

Those Uncrustables are pretty convenient for lunch (as an adult, I even sometimes take them), and I always support Gushers and Fruit by the Foot. :) Also, maybe some string cheese?

Glad that you’re feeling better, and I hope that you have a great treadmill run today, Janae!! YOU GOT THIS!!

Reply

Thanks Natalie! Oh I totally remember the Uncrustables… I loved those!! Thanks girl! I hope your day is a beautiful one:)

Reply

What a great family picture! Dunkaroos were the best, the vanilla icing with those big sprinkles in them were my favorite! My mom would also freeze our yogurt so that when we were ready for lunch it was nice and cold still. I guess that is a life hack and a Brooke lunch idea ha!

Reply

RIGHT?! They really are the best. Okay, my mom used to do that to and I totally forgot… I’m definitely going to do that for Brooke! THANK YOU. Have a wonderful day Melissa!

I lived at 7500 feet for a little over a year and swam while I was there, and going to sea level was AMAZING. USA Swimming even has official altitude adjustment factors for different events for qualification for meets. So I had some times in their database that are faster than I ever actually really swam. It hurt a lot when I first moved there, though! I bet you could pull off some incredible times at sea level.

Reply

7500 feet…. WOW! Oh I bet it felt like heaven swimming at sea level after that! That is so interesting how they adjust your times according to altitude… awesome. Thanks girl, I hope you are doing well and what’s next for you?

Love the cute lunch box!
Allie is my favourite pro right now. She shows her workouts too, which I love.
She just broke up with her boyfriend and the internet trolls accused her of doping which made her (justifiably) mad, so I cannot wait to see if she turns those emotions into a PR or win this fall.

Reply

I absolutely love that she shows her workouts too… it’s so incredible to me. I love that she shows how she adjusts them too according to how she is performing that day (faster or slower, more or less etc). YES–> I can’t wait to see what she does too. So exciting. I can’t wait to see what YOU do at NYCM!!

I struggle with lunches! I always do leftovers (bc my kids are in preschool and they still heat up lunches ;-)) but my fav snacks are the apple banana crushers from Trader Joes, veggies and hummus (or the veggie stick crackers), string cheese or cut up cheese sticks and homemade muffins or banana bread. I’m totally going to watch the comments to get ideas! Glad you’re feeling better. :)

Reply

Oh I wish they would heat up lunch at Brooke’s school, that would be awesome. THANK YOU for the snack tips… I’ll have to make homemade muffins too, Brooke would love that. Have a wonderful day Mollie!

Reply

Teacher here- If they won’t heat up her lunches and you want to send leftovers (they make the absolute best lunches), get a kids thermos. I have parents who put everything in them (chicken nuggets, spaghetti, taco meat, soup, etc.) And they’re still warm come lunch. Also, as an easy swap tortilla roll ups are always fun for kids. Anything that goes on a sandwich goes in the tortilla and they get so excited about something other than a sandwich.

Reply

BRILLIANT!! Thank you so much… I will definitely be kidding a gets thermos for Brooke. She loves leftovers like me so this will be a game changer. And the tortilla idea… so smart. Thank you for the help you guys!

Reply

The trick if you want to send leftovers in a thermos is to boil water in the morning and put boiling water in the thermos for about 5 minutes (or the time it takes you to cook or reheat her lunch). When the lunch is ready, you remove the hot water from the thermos, pat the thermos dry and put the food quickly in it to keep the heat inside. By the time lunch comes, it is still decently warm ;-) I’ve been doing that for my son for years! That way it is possible to send noodles, soup, mini-pizza pieces, etc.

Hey! You should follow my neighbor on Instagram (livin_lovelee). During the school year she posts lunchbox ideas (as far as what she packed for her kids) and she is so creative. I will be using her as a resource when Emery is old enough for school lunches!! Hope you are feeling better!!

THIS IS WHAT I NEED!! Following her now, thanks Julia. MISS YOU! Let’s hit the trails soon:)

That’s so cute that your nephew wants to be Lincoln for Halloween. Too bad they couldn’t find a costume! We went to the Lincoln museum over the summer too – it was amazing! I’m happy someone so little is interested in history – hopefully it’s the beginning of something he continues to enjoy.

Do NOT look to me for luck packing advice. My youngest packs everyday and brings what is probably the most unhealthy lunch there is….it’s always a lunchable, chips, a capri sun, and fruit snacks. She does eat a healthy supper every night though, she loves vegetables. But for whatever reason, she’s hooked on that lunch and refuses to eat anything else. That’s one battle I’ve learned to let go of.

Reply

Oh that is so cool that you went to the museum too, I was so sad that we missed it (they did it as part of our family reunion but we had to get back for Andrew to go to his labs)! That sounds delicious to me! Brooke is obsessed with lunchables! I hope your day is a great one Amanda!

Reply

Love your family photo!!!

My baby is starting Kindergarten in Sept:( it makes me so sad thinking about it. We did the LLbean backpack and lunch bag – I’m hoping it will last most of the elementary years:) I haven’t had to pack lunches yet but I am planning on making muffins, banana bread, cookies, she likes “wow butter” (me not so much hah) and jam sandwiches, goldfish crackers, yogurt tubes, cheese strings, fruit, those fruit to go’s, soup in a thermos, hummus and veggies or crackers are all good options.
Is Brooke going into Kindergarten or grade 1? Could you be share some back to school clothing ideas for the kids if possible.
Have a great day

Reply

AHHHHH Kindergarten! How do they grow up so fast!?!? Thank you so much for the ideas… I really appreciate it! I’m going to join in the muffins and banana bread club–> I want that for lunch too. She will be in first grade! So my biggest tips are to use RetailMeNot app to find awesome deals for back to school shopping and also to get a gap or oldnavy card. We got everything this year at those two stores but got crazy good deals since I have my gap credit card… like ridiculous deals!! I cannot recommend it enough and I just pay it off the second I get home:) Have a great day Ash!

Reply

I got all my daughters clothes from Old Navy too but I had no idea about their credit card – Im definitely going to look into that, thank you!!!

Reply

Oh awesome! Let me know if you get it and the deals you get! My gap card gets me an extra 10% off every day and I get a ton of rewards and other random sales too. Sometimes I’ll leave the store feeling like I am getting too good of a deal haha!

Reply

My son is a very picky eater. When he was in pre-primary (age 2 – 6) the teachers would let him sit on his own to eat because he got nauseas. The only thing I can pack him is different fruit and cherrie tomatoes. I would love to run with Bruce Fordyce King of the Comrades.
ps Glad you feel better!!!

Reply

Really?! That is so interesting about your son! At least he loves fruit and cherrie tomatoes:) Is there a chance you will ever get to? Does he still do it every year? Thank you so much!

Reply

I am kind of obsessed with Gwen! I’ve seen all her videos :)

My mother made me the best lunches. They were all super healthy (I wasn’t picky either which helped) – homemade, no pre-packaged stuff. A sandwich, some fruit, sometimes a salad. But the fun part was always a little treat. She would usually pack 3 Hershey Kisses for my dessert. I loved the small token and it was like she was sending me a kiss at school when she wan’t there :) Also a little napkin with a note – short and sweet.

Reply

I am too… I love her! I want to have your mom make me lunches now! I love the 3 Hershey Kiss part–> so sweet! I’m going to do the napkin/note thing for sure, I love it:) Have a wonderful day Amanda!

Reply

1. I am always jealous of Allie’s bun and loved her tutorial. Thanks for that!.

2. Did your sister go to the Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield? If so, that’s one of my all time favorite museums!

3. I am seriously considering St George next year. That elevation pace chart isn’t reassuring since I run at 700 feet.

Reply

YES… that’s the one! It was during our family reunion! I was so sad we missed out since we had to fly home early. OH COME DO ST. GEORGE ahhhhhhh! It’s the best!

Reply

I’m not ready for school to start :( I love summer!

My oldest is picky so I have to get creative. Her favorite lung is a small version of 7layer dip with chips and then fruit or apple sauce on the side.

Reply

Me neither, this is breaking my heart. Oh I love that idea of the dip! Any word from the race?

Reply

They said as of right now it’s still on with the option to defer until Thursday. My asthma has really kicked up but I’m still hoping to run! And praying for a lot of rain haha. The air up the canyon has been retry moderate at worst so that’s good.

I love Brooke’s lunch box! It’s so cute and colorful!

And good luck falling back in love with the treadmill. I recommend lining up your absolute favorite running shoes next to them (so: allllllll of the Levitates and Launches?!?!?) so that each time you need to run on the ‘mill you can look at your shoes and make it like a special decision–what will I wear today? Which will get me through? Silly, but if it becomes a fun little game and a sort of ritual that’s specific to the treadmill, then maybe it will be easier to fall back in love with ‘mill running?!? (It’s the little things, right? And it’s all about creating a good kind of mental game to make it all actually happen, right?)

Lunch box ideas: instead of a regular sandwich, make pinwheels and put the individual slices face-up in Brooke’s little bento box compartment that’s good for sandwiches, and make them super colorful. Add a couple of squares of Dove chocolate in another compartment (or a few pieces of a specific candy that’s a favorite to both you and her so she knows that you specifically thought about her and a candy love that you share…) and in another one, those carrot ‘chips’ that you can get pre-cut and bagged at the grocery store that look almost like wavy-cut potato chips. When lunches get colorful (even when they’re so stinkin’ easy, they become even visually more fun to eat. Added bonus: if you use the big burrito sized tortillas to make pinwheel sandwiches, you can probably get like 6 or 8 slices of pinwheel out of them which is totally enough for a couple of days of lunch…and if that’s lunch on Tuesday and Thursday, then BAM! Two days of the week are taken care of!

…and on the Wednesday between the two days, maybe she gets hummus and celery sticks and pretzel sticks (and a couple of oreos… #becauseoreos are totally life, right?!?). And then maybe on Monday and Friday it’s something different–like a pita pocket sandwich stuffed with tuna and cheese.

Dang it–I should write all of this down for lunches FOR ME, because today is my first day of teaching (I am writing you from my office on campus, by the way), and now with being on campus Tuesday and Thursday and STILL having my running job on Mondays and Fridays, I need a super duper easy approach to making *my* lunches when it’s time to meal prep over the weekend!

Anyway–I hope you have a good day! I love that family picture, and especially the way Knox is holding onto you and the way Brooke is so relaxed standing in front of Andrew. Your blended family, and the fact that these little kids have extra parents to love them, to share wisdom, to encourage their dreams, and to help them stay focused when the world presents too much danger of straying from what they identify as their biggest priorities is so beautiful. I love it! (And I get that sometimes it’s glorious and easy and energizing…and sometimes it’s probably so exhausting and challenging…)

Reply

That is a great idea about lining up the shoes by the treadmill!Awesome ideas about the lunch box food and making it look so colorful and beautiful! I have a feeling I’ll want to eat it once it’s done:) THANK YOU Stephanie! Oh thank you so much, that means seriously the world to me. It seriously made my heart melt when he reached up to hold my hand all on his own for the picture:) Thank you! I hope your day is amazing Stephanie! When do classes start up again?

Reply

Classes start up this week!!! Today I get to meet all the students in 3 of my 5 classes–about 85 of my 110 students this semester!

I hope that when Knox becomes a bigger kid and goes through your blog and sees how you write about him with so much love that he really gets how much you love him. My husband had his stepmom FORCED on him at a really young age with all of the authority of “she is my wife and she is now your mom” instead of “look at all the love that surrounds you and the ways that you can learn to love one mother from near and one–his birth mom–from far away.” Tom, as an adult, has a big strain with his dad regarding this. His dad still wants Tom to acknowledge his stepmom as his mother, and Tom’s tag line is “I am an adult and need to make my own decisions–you forced something on me after a really hurtful divorce and you can’t force anything on me anymore.” This is neither here nor there–but seeing TOm’s dynamic with his father and stepmother, I just really appreciate, in a very sincere way, how you portray the LOVE in your blended family without feeling the need to either over-amplify the good stuff and sweep the challenges under the rug or emphasize the frustrations and assume that the good stuff is there. Focusing on the love that your family creates doesn’t change that there are good times and some big lessons…but it sets a foundation for what matters the most. The other stuff is always there (even in non-blended families). It’s the love that everyone creates together and that you fight for that lets everything else coexist! :)

Oh–I did something to either strain my glute muscles (right in the gluteus medeus range…) or start some nasty inflammation right around where the top of the IT Band attaches to the glute muscles. I’m sore and my right butt hurts! I could barely move on Sunday, and while today is BETTER, I was still sore enough and feeling serious aches and pains with every foot-fall this morning that I decided to crawl back into bed and be a well-rested Dr. K on my first day of classes instead of a potentially in-pain, unable-to-walk-properly Dr. K (who already looks sort of young and short and goofy and wants to make the RIGHT first impression on her students). I feel a bit bummed about missing my run, but since I am not training for anything right now I decided that rest is an amazing thing for the body instead of forcing myself to stick to a schedule. Hopefully it’s a good idea! :)

Reply

That is awful what Tom went through! I can’t imagine. Thank you for what you said:) YAY for meeting so many of your students this week! I want to come to your class. I am SO sorry about what is going on with your glute! Good for you to take the rest day . Keep me updated on how you are doing!

That family picture could not be more beautiful!!

I feel Beretta on those baby puffs….Confession: I don’t have kids and I eat them!! The macros are bomb and are perfect when you need something crunchy/salty/sweet.

Andrew looks LEGIT in those royal blue scrubs!! That’s the only color RN’s wear at my hospital, so I get pretty excited LOL. February will be here before you know. Nursing school is hard on everyone. Can’t wait until it’s over for you guys.

Reply

Oh thank you so much Kelly! Hahah that is awesome that you love the puffs too, we have tried them and they are tasty. YES… the royal blue are my favorite too. I hope you are having an incredible Tuesday!

We start back to school tomorrow. I have a picky eater, so that’s fun ! And she had a lot of food allergies while younger but is much better after 5 years of immunothereapy. But I think that’s why she’s so picky, never had a good variety of food choices while younger. So, her go to lunch is bologna on a Hawaiian roll, string cheese, dorittos and grapes, sometimes a fruit roll up. For a treat, she loves lunchables or a Subway sandwich. Those are good when I need an easy quick lunch to send. She loves when we throw homemade cookies or brownies in there too. Good luck and have fun lunch packing !!

Reply

Good luck with the first day back to school! I’m so glad that she is doing so much better now! Thank you so much for ideas and Brooke would love all of those things! Have a wonderful day Michele.

I know you don’t eat gluten free in your house but there are some great ideas on this site. I use this for myself actually, for snack ideas and easy lunches. I don’t eat a lot of gluten because of how I feel when I do so I love these suggestions.

Okay, I want to eat from the lunch boxes she posted… those meatballs look so good. Thank you Megan, these are fabulous ideas. I really appreciate you sharing this with me. Have a wonderful day!

Reply

Hi! I’ve been reading your blog for years but have never commented. In terms of lunch ideas, when I was in grade school, my favorite lunch ever was “Make-your-own pizzas”- my mom would pack me a Ziploc of mini pitas, one of mozzarella cheese, and a little Tupperware of tomato sauce, and I’d get to construct my own mini pita pizzas. It was the best! Other ideas include PB&J cut into fun shapes, carrots and hummus, celery/apple slices and peanut butter, string cheese, and anything easy and portable like beef jerky and cut-up fruits and veggies.

Reply

That is brilliant. I love that idea and Brooke would too! Thanks Kathryn for taking the time to give me these ideas, they are perfect. Thank you for reading and keep in touch! Have an awesome Tuesday!

Reply

Love, love your family photo! Skye is getting so big now! Congrats to Andrew on being almost done! My sister is a nurse and I remember her telling me how intense the rotations could be during school! She has been an RN now for 3 years and LOVES it. I am currently in school for my masters in social work.. I have 2 semesters left until I graduate in May! ??
If I could run with anyone, it would probably be Kara Goucher. She just seems like such an amazing person. So, I definitely need to do one of her podium retreats some day!
I hope you are feeling better ?

Reply

Let’s both go to her podium retreat, seriously that would be amazing! AHHH 2 semesters left, you are incredible. You are going to help a lot of people!

Your family photo is beautiful! Here are some lunch ideas that my little boy loves: leftovers from supper (rice, meat, potato, veg.); pasta noodles and sauce with cheese sprinkled on top; soup occasionally (or alphagetti) ham and cheese sandwich; veggies and hummus; a piece of fruit (apple, banana, grapes, blueberries); annie’s cheddar bunny crackers; string or baybel cheese; yogurt drink; homemade muffins, bread, granola bars; real fruit strips; cheese and cracker packs; bear paws… I try to mix it up, but usually include a piece of fruit, a yogurt, some form of cheese, and treat snack and another healthy snack along with his meal! I hope this helps :)

Reply

Thank you so much Chelsea! Your ideas are perfect… seriously, thank you so much (and reading it made me hungry and needing some alphagetti;) Thanks for taking the time to do this for me. It definitely helps.

Reply

Lunch idea! GAH! I am SO not a fan of packing lunches!! My son is not picky per se but he is kind of a foodie and will only eat a sandwich about twice a month. Apple doesn’t fall to far from the tree! We do bento style with rolled up turkey or ham and cheese, fruit, energy bites (homemade pb and chocolate chip goodness – I am sure google could help), crackers, carrot sticks with ranch, trail mix, yogurt and cheese sticks, etc. I find these types of lunches handy b/c my son is a chatterbox. He can still eat and chat! LOL! We also utilize a thermos. Leftovers, soup, mac & cheese, and things like chicken nuggets or quesadillas wrapped in foil and placed in the thermos work nicely. My son also loves a “nacho fun lunch.” All the stuff for nachos separated for his enjoyment! 100 days of real food on FB has lots of great ideas too! Good luck!

Reply

Oh that makes packing lunches very hard. I LOVE all of your ideas and I will be copying many. Thank you so much… this is perfect. Brooke would love a nacho fun lunch too. Going to check out that FB page. Thanks so much Bridgette!

Reply

Allie Kiefer wrote me back too when I thanked her for making it permanent and asked her what kinds of hair bands she uses. So nice! So I make my kids pack their own lunches (I’ll help my kindergartener with the main item such as sandwiches, cracker stackers, hard boiled eggs and crackers, etc) but then they get to choose 1 vegetable, 1 fruit, and 1 snack to accompany the main item. We also pack it the night before so it’s not part of the morning rush. Good luck!

Reply

SHE DID… oh seriously she is the best! Okay, that is such a good idea to have your kids pack their own lunches. I think Brooke would actually really enjoy doing that or helping me at least! What a great way to get them to understand including all of the different food groups in a meal etc. I love it. Have a beautiful rest of your day Chelsea!

Anna walked by when I pulled up your blog and she said, ‘Oh! That is a pretty picture!’ (of you family picture) and I couldn’t agree more. Although, the picture of Skye with her little tongue outside also wins all the cute points.

My mom used to pack me a tupperware of cold cereal and then I would buy milk at school and pour it in so I could have cereal for lunch. She usually accompanied that with a handi-snack, a fruit by the foot and some dunkaroos. I am not even kidding. All the kids were jealous of my lunch. I am just surprised I didn’t get sick to my stomach….or get diabetes….

Reply

Tell Anna thank you and thank you again for the cutest shirt ever. Your mom is brilliant. And I think I’m having that combo for lunch tomorrow;)

Reply

Lunch, fruit, yoghurt, and her favourite sandwich? I love pickles so I would put those in too. Maybe ask Brooke what she wants in her lunch (within reason ha).

Ah, I have been out of school for a while now, and not keen to go back hahaha.

I like your sisters life hack with the pajamas. My sis had to do that with my almost 3 year old niece because she can get out of almost anything these days :).

Hmm, if I could run with any runner – I would like to run with Kaci Lickteig – she won Western states 100 mile last year – or Jim Walmsley who set the course record this year at Western States. Of course this would mean I would have to have magical powers to keep up haha.

Have a fantastic day!

Reply

YES… I love it! Thanks Kristine! Wow, both of those people would be amazing to run with (or bike next to for me while they run;). Thanks, you too!

My kids loved easy to eat things: cream cheese and sprinkle cheese wrapped in a tortilla and cut into slices, PBJ, Hawaiian rolls with ham and cheddar, noodles and butter in a thermos, etc. Sides were always a fruit (no giant apples or oranges, keep it small!) grapes, clementines, cut melon, berries. Really, kids don’t eat that much at lunch so as long as they get a decent breakfast, a snack, and a healthy dinner they’ll be fine. Heck, one of my kids was happy with a bag of cereal that he would add school lunch milk to in lieu of a sandwich. As my daughter got older, she took leftovers.

I’d love to go on a group run with Joanie Benoit, Kara, and Desi and invite Meb to join us.

Reply

Brilliant on the wrapped tortillas! I need to do noodles and butter in a thermos for her too, that’s her favorite! That is very true about their lunch habits ha. I will definitely be doing the bag of cereal + school milk thing for her once in a while. Thank you so much Kelly! I hope you are having a great day and that you get that group run someday!

Beautiful family photo! I hadn’t clocked that Andrew has done full marathons too! Lovely that St George is a family thing :) My little boy has packed lunches quite a bit. He usually has some sort of sandwiches, plus a hard boiled egg, some fruit and something like cherry tomatoes or mini sausages. I have to admit that I’ve got a little bit into decorations – little animal picks and cupcake rings which means the lunch can be themed and look cute with minimal effort! He also likes these little moulds for boiled eggs – you boil and shell it, and the new place it in the mould and by the time they open it for lunch the egg is in the shape of a bear, or a star, or whatever. He also likes a little pot of pickles, olives and sweetcorn, and especially loves the odd little chocolate treat I put in very occasionally (that’s what he told me to say when I asked him just now what he would recommend for Brooke :)) In winter I sometimes give him warm food in a thermos, like pasta or even sausages, with a bun separately so he can make a hot dog. Beware though – the decorations can get pretty addictive!!

Reply

Yes… and he has done an Ironman, he is amazing! Okay, you rock… brooke loves hard boiled eggs and I didn’t even think of that! I love the idea of decorating them too, thank you so much for sharing all of these awesome tips. Have a wonderful day … thanks again for taking the time to give me these ideas!

Reply

I typed out a super long response earlier and succeeded in losing it somehow. So this will be short: sunbutter and jelly sandwiches, apples, chips (one kids’ favorites); yogurt, kefir, cheese sticks, naked smoothies, pretzels, fruit (my other kids’ favorites)

Reply

AHHHH noooooo! I am so sorry it got lost. Great ideas, thank you so much! I forgot about those naked smoothies, Brooke loves those and Costco has the small bottles of them. Also, we need sunbutter. Have a great rest of your day!

Reply

Wow I can’t believe your luck with the strep … glad you’ve rested and are feeling better! I am sort of in school … I have TWO WEEKS left in my medical residency (the end of a ten year road) … soooo close!

Reply

Seriously, I don’t know how it knocked us all out the way it did. TWO WEEKS ANDREA. You are my hero. I can’t even imagine all of the hard work that you have put in… you better go on a sweet getaway to celebrate:)

Reply

I hope you post about Brooke’s lunches so I can get ideas too. But my son is picky so it’s harder. He loves pb and banana sandwiches though but bananas cut up ahead of time always brown so I’m not sure about that one. This is our first year in school and having to pack lunch.

Reply

I totally will, great idea Mary! Picky eaters are SO hard… I understand. Does he do pb and honey sandwiches? Why do bananas have to turn brown. Good luck with him going to school.

Reply

Just wanted to share that Brooke and I have the same birthday, and that I also was six when I started kindergarten. I was always one of the older kids in my class, but I truly think it set me up to do much better academically throughout the years than if I had been one of the youngest. I was a hard core mommy’s girl and definitely wasn’t ready for full time school at five, so I did two years of pre-K. Can’t wait to see how much she loves kindergarten!!

Reply

HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOMORROW RACHEL!!! I hope that you have the most perfect day tomorrow!! Thanks for your sweet comment.. Brooke is a hard core mommy’s girl too haha!

We use PackIt Freezable lunch boxes so that their lunches stay cold. I always for get the freezer packs to pop in so these lunch boxes stay in the freezer and they are usually still really cold when they come home. I use the easy lunch box containers with them and I often prep lunches for the entire week or for 3 days in advance.

I love the easy lunch box containers, the lids stay on and I color code my kids so they know which one to grab from the fridge. I also sometimes put in a hot lunch and I use thermos brand but we are getting a Stanley thermos to see if it will work even better (according to the description you can leave ice cream in it for 10 hours so we are going to test it out!!!).

One of mine loves variety and the other would be okay either way. The girls favorites are a make your own tacos, pizza pinwheels/bagel pizzas, big salads, turkey roll ups, wow butter and jelly sandwich, tuna fish, breakfast for lunch and healthy snack assortments. I use the silicone cupcake liners to further separate items if needed. Usually they have their main meal, then fruit in one compartment and veggies in another compartment.

But… I hate making lunches with a passion. My husband doesn’t get it when I get excited that their is no school simply because I don’t have to pack lunches. My oldest just about had a lunch bag thrown at her when she came home in May and said “Hey Mom, you are really not that creative with lunches lately”. She is not too thrilled that she will be assisting in her lunches this year.

School lunches can be tough. My youngest loves pinwheel sandwiches. Tortilla spread with cream cheese, ham or turkey & cheese sliced up into pinwheels. I usually pack some kind of fresh fruit & pretzels or whole grain crackers with it. She also likes to pack the individual cups of peanut butter to dip pretzels & apple slices into.

I love that your nephew wants to be Lincoln for Halloween, and I’m going to strongly encourage your sister to piece together and/or make the costume happen! Know that they already settled on Batman, but Halloween is far off, and I have a feeling they can either return or resale the Batman costume, and Batman is so generic – no other kid is going to be Lincoln! I’m sure with this much time before Halloween, your sister would be able to find a top hat, surely they can find an Abe-like beard from somewhere online, and then he just needs a black slacks and a black coat which I bet can be found at thrift store!

It’s so hard to just pick one elite pro!! I think running with Des would be AWESOME, but I’m loving Allie too ~ she’s so honest and I think it’s great how she posts her goals for all to see; like I think yesterday or in the recent past, she said it was her goal to be on the podium at NYC! It’s going to be wonderful to see her and Shalane go head to head :) LOVE IT. Hope you’re having a great day!

My son’s absolute favorite lunch is a bacon or sausage/egg burrito. Usually with sliced red/orange/yellow peppers on the side. His little eyes shine with delight when he comes home and empties his backpack, lunchbox, etc. Usually, he tosses the mostly not eaten lunch box on the counter and disappears, but opens it with pride and puts the dishes in the dishwasher on days I sent the silly little breakfast burrito. Perhaps he’s trying to train me with positive reinforcement?
