Living in Denial, My Hip Drop Problem & Many Tangents.

Eight miles in the most beautiful running shoes that I’ve ever seen.  I felt so cool in these Launch 5s.  Who else is VERY motivated to get out the door for a run when they have something new to wear?

I saw quite a few hot air balloons while I was getting in my Monday run.  There were still a bunch on the ground waiting to go up too!

8 miles @ 8:29 pace.  The first two miles I felt awful but then I finally got into the groove.  I think my body had adjusted to sea level over the weekend in Seattle and I had to gain back my altitude lungs.  Okay, I know it isn’t possible to lose that in just a few days of being away but it sure felt like it!

IMG 4853

So nice to be home again!

IMG 4863

Brooke is pretty proud because she can hold Skye now (only when I am right next to her though) when she is standing up.

IMG 4856

Skye is a big fan of Brooke, clearly.

IMG 4868

Ali and I chatted on Skype for another podcast episode together!  I can’t wait to share it with you guys.  Brooke joined in for the first few minutes to share her current thoughts on life too so I’ll let you know when it is out.

IMG 4869

Let’s just fast forward to the food highlight of the day.  Steak shish kabobs and grilled pineapple.  Followed directly by an oreo shake because it was needed.

IMG 4872

We then all went over to Andrew’s softball game!  They played three games and won all three!

I stayed for 1.5 of the games and took the girls home to get in bed after:)

I’ve been living in denial—>  About my hip drop.

Last Saturday we went on a run with the Brooks Beasts.  I was right behind these pros (it was their easy easy easy pace) for a few miles (my biggest fear was accidentally hitting their foot and making them trip/get injured and ruining their careers ha;) and I was just amazed as I watched them run.  It was so fluid and their form was just beautiful.  Their bodies moved so efficiently and seamless through the stride.  I have seen MANY pictures from races etc over the last little while where I definitely have a hip drop!  “A hip drop occurs when full body weight is being supported on one leg, like during the stance phase of running.  Typically, a weakness in the hip of the weight bearing leg causes the opposite hip to drop.” (SOURCE)

I’m not sure if it has gotten worse after having kids or if I have always done this but I desperately need to fix this because I’ve got some marathons to train for and I want to be healthy and fast.  I’ve been doing some good reading about it and I would LOVE to hear if any of you have experienced this and what you did about it.

Hip drop runners

My hip is like the B on the above picture!  I am going to work to get it to look like A!

Why is this a problem?  “The logic is pretty simple, then: weak abductor and external rotator muscles cause excessive adduction and internal rotation during running, since the hip muscles aren’t strong enough to resist the forces from ground impact.”  (SOURCE—> such a good article).

Time to pick up on the side leg lifts and clamshells and work with Dr. B to get this fixed!  BUT I need any help I can get from you guys too… PLEASE!

I’ll be doing a lot of these:

Here is an example of my hip drop from a few years ago:

Time for a few tangents this morning!

*The other day Laura reminded me about the amazingness of Polly Pockets.  One hour later we jumped in the car and drove to my parents’ house to find my old ones.  She is just as obsessed with them as I was when I was her age.   I’m sure glad I have kept these for 24 years:)

IMG 4362

*I was so excited to get to hang out with Natalie this last weekend.  She ran a 3:11 (and a 3:13 at CIM in December) marathon last month and I picked her brain on all of her running tips lately.  She is incredible in so many ways.

IMG 4870

*I loved seeing this machine in the Brooks lab testing out some shoes.  It simulates the pounding that we do on our shoes with each mile to test how the shoe holds up to all of the running we do in them!

IMG 4473

*I think I need to get the Brooks jacket that Des wore during Boston for this next winter.  I mean, it kept her from getting hypothermia and helped her to win the Boston marathon so I think I really need it.

IMG 4449

*My family has a big group text message going on at all times and this photo was sent out this last week.  Flashback to the time my parents had only one grandchild… and now they have 23 more:)  PS my two sister-in-laws in this picture have been in my family for so long I don’t really remember life before them.

*I have a red pair of goodr glasses and it always takes a second to get used to the fact that the world is not actually orange when I take them off ha.

IMG 4778

*Loribeth told me about Dunkin’ Donuts new donut fries and I need to try them.  We don’t have Dunkin’ in our area so somebody reading needs to try them and give me a review.

This is too funny! I’ve been reading all about hip drops all weekend because my knee has been bothering me. But I can’t figure out what it means that my hip drops on the same side as my weight l-bearing leg! Any thoughts?

Reply

My knee injury was how I figured out I have a hip drop. I would assume it’s related. I’m still working on it :)

Those pictures of Brooke and Skye melt my heart!! I love how big Skye’s smile is around her. SO sweet!!

I remember Polly Pocket! We didn’t have a ton of money when I was growing up, so I was never able to have one because my parents thought it was a waste of money, but I remember my friends having them! I actually didn’t play with toys much (mainly played sports outside in the street), but I love my koala named Tie that my best friend gave me in second grade. I still have him (and actually can’t sleep without him)! :)

Reply

OH I LOVE that you still have that Natalie, that is awesome! Oh thank you so much! Have a great Tuesday!

I am obsessed with those flag shoes but I can’t pull the trigger. I’m too cheap. I am a Brooks wearer but I always buy older models at a discount. My most recent running purchase was some purple Tifosi sunglasses and a hot pink bondi band headband. I love both. It was a really fun trip to the running store. I wandered around while my 2 and 3 year old ran wild on the track.

Reply

I need to check out the Tifosi sunglasses…. and the headband! Gotta love those running store trips:) Oh and Brooke loves running on the track there too. I hope you have an amazing day Jessica!

How about I was confused for a minute looking at that wedding photo because I thought your dad was one of your brothers! Then I was like oh wait it’s her dad! You should tell him that he may get a kick out of it ?

Reply

I can totally see that too… they look a lot alike! I will have him read your comment:) Thanks Sara and I hope you have a great day!

I don’t really have any issue with my hips (my arms always want to cross over in front of me, that’s my form struggle!) but maybe it’s because I do a lot of balance work/single leg strength training? I would imagine my hips and stabilizing muscles are a lot stronger because I do single leg squats, single leg deadlifts, bulgarian split squats, and front-to-back lunges with a balance in between. I noticed when I focused on including those movements, my hips/glutes felt stronger, so maybe those movements will help you?
Last running purchase – new shorts from the Nike outlet. I only got one pair because the rest were all XS or XL… not cool! I am debating on a new pair of Levitates but I can’t justify the cost right now!
Tuesday Tangent for me – this morning I just could NOT find my rhythm on my run! I felt like everything was off somehow – so finally I just turned off my music and the time alerts so I didn’t know what speed I was going, and I just ran. Somehow I ended up getting faster after I did that? So weird. It’s like I couldn’t relax or something!

Reply

Oh yes, my arms do that too. I guarantee you don’t have problems with your hips because of all of your balance and strength training. You are my motivation and yes, those things will absolutely help me! SOOOOOO fun fact that I’m talking more about soon. Brooks has a new shoe coming out soon that is a mix between the launch and the levitates and it is cheaper than the levitates but you still get a lot of the goodness that the levitates offer, they might be perfect for you! WAY TO GO this morning Rhiannon!

Reply

OOOOH well I can’t wait to hear more about these shoes! Sounds like just what I need!

Reply

So funny that you mention the Dunkin fries, I grabbed an iced coffee from them this morning and saw it on their menu and had to get them. They are definitely better warm than cold but still good.

Reply

Thank you for letting me know Rachel! Glad you got to try them out and if I get a chance to get them ever, I’ll make sure they are warm! Have a wonderful day!

Reply

I have a pair of Goodr glasses and mine are bronze and I think the same thing when I take them off! But I love them for running – they are great!

Never paid attention to the hip drop thing, but now i’m going to ;)

Reply

I want some bronze ones:) That is awesome. Let me know if you want to work on the hip drop thing together. Have a beautiful day!

Reply

I feel like I need to pull up and analyze all my race photos and see!

Reply

Hip drop! Mine is bad. I didn’t know t was even a thing until I went to physical therapy for my knee and now I know I need to work on it in a big way! All the leg/butt exercises now.

I really wish I kept my Polly pocket. I saw that they tried to make a new version when I went to toys r us before they closed and I didn’t even buy it. Now I’m regretting that too. The ones you dress are the worst!

Reply

AHHHH I didn’t know they had new ones at Toys R Us… we missed it. Jenny below says that they are coming out with more soon!

Reply

I am so excited that you’re going to be back on Ali’s show!!! That was how I found your blog to start with. Her show is amazing

Reply

Oh no way!! This makes me so happy Beckett (I LOVE YOUR NAME)!! Ali is seriously the best. I keep telling her that she is born to be a podcast host. Have a wonderful day and keep me updated on everything going on in your world.

Reply

There’s a name for it!!! I have terrible hip drop I guess- my race pics always look so weird- just like the diagram. I’m already working with a trainer on glute and hip strength but this post is super helpful!!! Thank you!

Tangent- we just got back from a week in Utah- our third time. So want to move out there! But lack of Dunkins might be a problem.

Reply

YOU WERE HERE!?!?! Oh that is awesome. If you were in my area though we might be in a fight since you didn’t email me to go for ice cream ha:) Keep me updated with what you learn to help your hip drop, I need to get this fixed!

Reply

I love my brooks shoes. I usually rotate between the ghost and the adrenaline. Do you know if the flag shoes, like you have, only come in the launch?

Reply

Yes, they are only in the Launch 5s this year! Have you tried the launch? They are definitely one of my favorites. I do love those ghosts too. Have an amazing day Trish!

Reply

PS they have the Adrenaline in patriotic colors too!

Reply

Haha, if you were wearing a frilly skirt while running you’d be sashaying from side to side! I guess this probably means you’re good at strutting down a Runway?! But definitely something to fix for running. I actually thought the opposite. I don’t have a hip drop at all while running and I look as stiff as a board, so I thought that that was a problem of mine that I needed to fix! Good to know that my lower body is pretty okay.

Reply

HAHAH yes! You are doing great Linda. I hope your Tuesday is a great one!

Reply

Will you show a picture of you with a hip drop. I understand it on this diagram posted on here but it’s harder to see when wearing clothes in my opinion. I guess I need someone to take my picture running so I can see if i do. I have itband issues so probably I do have hip drop.

Reply

YES… I’m adding one to the post right now! Refresh the page!

OMG you are wearing your American flag
launches and I am at workcwearing my Adrenalines from the same collection. You are my shoe spirit animal! ALSO I put a pair of Oofos aside to buy after my work shift ends (FINALLY getting the Oofos after thinking them over for literally 3 weeks now…)!

I love the picture Brooke took of you and Skye!

I am a bit jealous that you got to see all the things Brooks is coming out with in the next few months. I want one of everything!!! Right now I NEED the new Ghost 11s in navy…and I need someone with money to spare to gift me with them!!!

Reply

Oh I love the Adrenalines too. THE BEST. Let me know how the OOFOS work for you! Thanks Stephanie and I hope you get the Ghost 11s soon, they are amazing! Have a beautiful day!

Reply

Ahhhhhh I bought my Oofos and even though I only wore them once I got home and kicked off my shoes, I am already in love. Squishy and comfy on my feet! Ahhhhhhhh! I will love them even more TOMORROW after my 10K!!!

Hope you’ve been having a great day out there :)

Reply

That video you posted about using your glutes on a run has really helped me. I’ve noticed less hip pain, plus it gives me something to focus on other than being tired and wanting to stop.

Reply

YES… that makes me SO happy!!! I need to rewatch that video daily:) Thanks so much Joan and keep me updated on everything!

Reply

No hip drop, I think, but definitely some biomechanics issues I am working to fix. Namely weak glutes.

Last running purchase, a pair of purple stances socks, goodr sunglasses and an on sale ultimate direction rain jacket (I needed something waterproof for the trails as I have been caught in the mountains a few times!) Last shoe purchase – was a pair of saucony peregrine 7s – on sale.

Favourite toy when i was younger – likely barbie and anything fisher price – the phone was definitely a hit.

Have a great day and enjoy the 4th of July tomorrow!

Reply

OH I love stance running socks. So glad you got that jacket too! Thanks you Kristine, you too!

Reply

My little girls love playing with my old Polly Pockets! I’ve heard they’re releasing new ones this year; I hope they’re as detailed as the old ones!

Reply

NO WAY. You just made Brooke’s day… we can’t wait. If you see them before we do will you send me the links? Thanks Jenny!

Reply

I’ll definitely share links!

Reply

I’ll be watching for those for sure!

Reply

Gah, I definitely have weak glutes/hips. I fought a hammy injury for almost a year, which I think stemmed from that. I’m back to running, but I’m stretching, lifting, and doing some glute activation moves before I run. I’m excited to follow along with you as you balance out your gait! Positive vibes your way!

Reply

I’m so glad you are back to running! I’m doing the glute activation before my runs too! Thank you so much Chelsea and you too. Keep me updated on everything please!

Because of your mention of getting Andrew some goodr glasses I looked into getting a pair and was surprised that I have been driving by their shop on my commute to work in Playa del Rey for the last 10 years…cool company and great glasses for not a lot of money, so thank you for mentioning them on your blog!

Reply

I would not be surprised if I had a hip drop at all. That picture of yours though :) hahahahaha

There is a dunkin donuts in Midvale. Guess we need to make the drive. For research purposes. Obviously

Reply

Last weekend I saw this guy carrying a box of donuts and HAVE NOT been able to stop thinking about them. So I did what any sane person would do – I gave myself permission to leave work at 1 pm and go pick up a couple of donuts from our local shop. I feel like you would get this :)

Reply

Okay, he is my hero. That is awesome and I am very glad that you went and got some donuts for YOU! Have a beautiful day Amy!

Reply

I love my Goodrs…..they have gold lenses and I do have to get used to it when i take them off! I just bought 2 more pair of boa usa running shorts…..i love them! I prefer to buy the men’s smalls rather than the women’s because i love how high the split goes on the side….nice range of motion! I have a new pair to debut tomorrow that looks like the Tennessee state flag….it’s red white and blue so it’s perfect for July 4th! Have a great day!!

Reply

Great post!! I have a lot of hip issues when I run a lot. My favorite stretch is pigeon pose. I need to do it more often. I hope you and your family have a great 4th of July!!

Reply

I love those shoes! I don’t care what the date is, I would love to lace those up each day!
Thanks for those hip exercises. Easy and ones I can remember. :)
Have a great 4th!

Reply

I also have hip drop problems! I also think I have a “hip twisting forward problems”. So one hip comes forward more as i step, but because of this, my foot lands straight in relation to that hip, but crooked in relation to my body, so it has been causing that foot to turn inward, and it has increased pressure/a little pain on that knee.

I will be right there with you doing the clamshells!

Reply

Janae did you comment a little while ago about dirt marks on the inside of your calves from the opposite foot hitting? (I think that was your blog I remember seeing that on?) Probably related, and something to talk to your chiro about in getting those hips and lower core strong! For sure something to be aware of after babies :)

And now I want grilled pineapple…

Reply

YES YES YES! That was me! Something completely related, you are so right. Thanks so much Kelly! I hope you have a great night and that you get some grilled pineapple asap!

Reply

Hi Janae! I had a great run workout today with the training group I joined in my area for fall races! We did some ladders (4 mins out, 4 mins back, repeat with 6 and 8 mins each– it was challenging in the humidity here!) But it was good!
I wanted to ask a question about rotating your running shoes. I am upping my mileage a lot this year compared to the past few years since I am trying to maintain a consistent long run and training for a marathon and have already put almost 200 miles on the new pair I bought in March!!! Yikes! I know I should probably buy another pair to rotate and wondered if you had any suggestions for when to rotate shoes, how many shoes to try to get into rotation, etc. I have always only had one pair of running shoes so I don’t really get the whole shoe rotation thing. I would love if you could give us some tips!
(Also, my sisters and I LOVED playing with polly pockets when we were little so it is fun that Brooke is getting to enjoy them too!)

Reply

EMILY!!! Way to go on your workout and yay for a training group! You rocked it today! I would love to write a blog post about this… is that okay? Expect it in the next 1.5 weeks because I have a lot to say about this. I hope that works and way to go on your marathon training!

Reply

I would love to read a blog post about this so that’s totally Ok!:)

The Dunkin fries are good! We are buddies with our local DD (I may have an iced coffee addiction that’s led to my daughter’s donut addiction ?), and they had us try them last weekend when we were there.

Reply

You are the best. I LOVE that we got to hang out!!! I’m saving this blog post, cause I love this pic of us.
xoxoxoxoxo

Reply

Janae – don’t worry! There are Dunkins in Salt Lake :).

Reply

I’m sure you already do this, I don’t get to keep up with blogs like I used to do I apologize if it’s repetitive, but I go to the chiropractor for my knee pain and a lot of my pain stems from my hips not being aligned. I started out going twice a week and gradually as my hips became stronger and more aware of its ideal location, I was able to back off. I can literally tell now when my hips are out of line because I finally know what it feels like to be straight! Lol I just did my first 5k today in a very long time with no knee pain. I’ve been going to the chiropractor for a few years now and swear by it! Good luck with your hip, I know that’s frustrating!

Reply

Thank you Heather for letting me know about this. Thank you for taking the time. I’m so glad that things are so much better for you and HUGE congrats on the 5k with no pain. I’m going to have to go to my chiro asap! THANK YOU!
