Passing the Baton (aka Skye) + Friday Favorites + Wow to You!

A photo of the baton pass-off.

Andrew left very early for his 11 miles (8:39 average and his last mile was 7:45… boom) and then when he got home I passed off Skye to him (the big kids were still asleep) and left with Candice for 6 miles @ 8:37 average pace.

Look at our matching Levitates… isn’t that sweet?

Just hanging out in the front waiting to cheer on Andrew for his last .02 miles of his long run.

A few weeks ago I met a girl while I was walking with Skye.  We started talking while we were both walking and pretty much told our life stories to each other (I tend to do that…).  She is a single mama right now (new readers—>  I was a single mom for a few years so I can understand a lot of what she is experiencing) and just really amazing.  We met up again for a walk yesterday and it was so much fun to see her again.

My mission to eat all of the food in our house that could go bad is going well and creating some random meals.

IMG 1134

We worked hard getting everything packed and ready to go for today.  It’s a LOOONNNNGGG (in my opinion) flight so this should be interesting.

Knox practices daily his flossing.  Andrew had the kids make a Mother’s Day movie for me and one of the reasons Knox said that he loves me is because I’m really good at flossing.  If you would like a video of my floss dance, please leave a request.

We finished up the broccoli… it is now okay to leave on our trip.  Costco frozen orange chicken:

I also made sure to finish off the chocolate;)

I’ve got some favorites for you today!

*Andrew’s phone case/wallet… super convenient and I love the look (he has had it for awhile too).  I have a Thread Wallet that connects to my keychain (you can find it HERE) and I have used it for YEARS and love it.  It’s nice to have your keys and wallet all together.

IMG 0833

*As I’ve told you 50 times already, I’ve been losing so much hair.  I have been using Vital Proteins to help in my protein shakes and then Andrew got these gummies for me.  He heard in one of his nursing classes that they are really great for hair so I started taking them.  If anything, I think they taste good and I think they are going to help my hair out too:)

IMG 0304

*Blueberries and cottage cheese.   Kerri told me about this mix and she is brilliant.  My #1 is cottage cheese with grapes but this is a close second.

IMG 0313

*THIS COOKBOOK.  We just bought it and it is beautiful.  Each picture will make you drool.  We can’t wait to try out Joanna’s recipes because we are obsessed with her.

IMG 0305

*This was my first time trying a Picky Bar and Laruen’s Mega Nuts was so delicious.  If only they weren’t kind of pricy for a snack… so good though.

IMG 0303

*NEW (to me at least) flavors (huma chia energy gel plus) that I bought at our running store!  Natural electrolytes—>  yes please.

IMG 0301

*These workbooks for the kids.  We got them for the kids to use during the summer to get ready for the upcoming school year and they are awesome.  You can find them here on Amazon but they are cheaper at Costco.

IMG 0309

*One of our most used summer items… This umbrella.  I just keep it in the car to bring it out whenever we need it because we love the shade.

I love seeing the amazing things that you guys are achieving.  If you want to be featured for the amazing running things that you are doing, send them to [email protected]

Rene’!!!  “I want to brag on my running club.  Six of us traveled from Texas to Ventura to do M2B.  We each had different goals but a unified purpose:  Lisa and I were trying to qualify, Denise was coming back from surgery, Chris decided to train to help Denise achieve her goal of a PR, Sheri battled injury throughout training, and Teri was running her second marathon.  We were gifted with the perfect race and each of us achieved our goals- PRs all around!!  The celebration that night was pretty awesome.  I feel so blessed to be part of a group (I’m looking at you MRC) where everyone is encouraged and works together to help achieve goals.  That is what it’s really all about.”

M2B

Catie!!!  “I ran my first 5k postpartum race Saturday morning!  I am 5 months postpartum.  I started running again in February.  Slowly but surely I have built back up my endurance and mileage.  I haven’t ran a race in well over two years!  It was a really warm race but I finished in 40:53!  I didn’t have a time goal for this, just a goal to finish.  My next race, probably in October, I have a time goal of 33 minutes.”

Eva!!!  “This past Sunday I ran my first half in Manchester, UK.  I agreed to run it with a friend who we’ve met on holiday in France 12 years ago.  Her parents invited me to sleep at their house and they all showed me around Manchester.  The weather was beautiful and warm (a heatwave in English standards).  Before the race we went to the toilet at her brothers apartment, just 5 minutes from the start.  I felt great for the first 15 kilometers (although I went to the bathroom at 7 kilometers and lost 3 minutes there, but my running comfort improved a lot so it was worth it).  Then I felt I was getting quite hot.  I saw someone lying at the side of the road so I took it a bit more easy.  I took another gel, had two bottles of water at the water station and drank the first one while walking.  Then I ran the rest of the race.  I finished in 2.18.23.  I had great support, my sister and her boyfriend came to spectate too.  I feel really proud I finally dared to try this distance, I followed my training plan, and enjoyed it a lot.  I only missed two workouts, but sometimes didn’t do intervals when they were called for, but that’s okay.  I really enjoyed being a tourist and running a race, and doing it with a friend made it extra special.”  You can read more at her blog here!

Michelle!!!  “I ran the Mountains to the Beach marathon yesterday 5/27/2018.  I have been training hard for a BQ!  In the last two weeks of my taper I had a calf issue and was so worried it would effect my performance!  Well I ran the marathon and went through a roller coaster of emotions, I felt tired at mile 10, then I cramped up at mile 17 but I kept pushing!  I realized at mile 20 if I just kept pushing I could BQ.  I rounded the turn along the ocean for the last mile and I pr’ed by 10 min and qualified for Boston with 6 minutes to spare, finishing with a 3:49.  I am so proud of myself!  I realized if you really want something you can do it!  This was my 5th marathon and definitely the hardest but the most rewarding!”

Here’s a favorite—> or at least a really awesome deal. I have been looking for some hiking sandals and Costco has some awesome hiking sandals right now for $5!! At least the one in Orem does. I was quite upset that they didn’t carry tiny sizes because I’m a size 5 and no one carries a 5. I have to shop kids section haha! So I found some at target in the kids section (size 4 in youth) and they will work great but people might think I’m one of the kids on our hike haha! It’s fine, they work.

Reply

Jenny I wear a size 5 too and its impossible to find shoes! I feel your pain.

Reply

Haha at least kid shoes are cheaper right?

Reply

WAIT WHAT? Hiking sandals at Costco for $5! That is crazy… I wish they had your size so bad! I might make you grab me a pair (we are leaving for a while) next time you are there and I will pay you back:) So glad they had some at Target for you! I hope you have a great weekend girl!

I wish Michigan and Utah were closer! I’d love to go for a walk with you. I also have a habit of word vomiting my whole life story, probably when people least expect to hear it, haha. I feel like we’d have lots to talk about!

My husband is an EMT / Firefighter so some mornings he is coming home from work and I’m leaving or vice versa in the evenings and we always call it our “TAG! You’re it!” parenting moment. It’s not my favorite thing in the world, but having undivided time with my kids is one of my favorite things in the world and I feel so lucky that both my husband and I get to have undivided time with them (of course, family time is my top favorite thing!).

Reply

We would get along well… word vomit is exactly what I do! COME TO UTAH:) Also, family time being your favorite thing in the world, we really need to hang out. Ha I am going to copy your “Tag! You’re it!” thing… you and your husband are doing awesome. Have a fabulous weekend Krystal!

I have a June B-day, so does Hubby (2 days apart)…then the very next day is our 20 yr Anniversary…..then 6 days later is my son’s birthday. We didn’t plan that very well did we;) LOL.
I’ve never been on a really long flight…..so no advice. but fingers are crossed for ya;)

Your June is CRAZY!!! Have fun with all of the celebrating:) Enjoy your weekend Amanda and congrats on TWENTY YEARS!

My favorite for the day: using NATIONAL DONUT DAY this morning to get donuts from DaVincis which I had been wanting to try anyway. I got a maple bacon and a French toast donut. Each one was mini-sized (3 bites each??) so it’s like I got one donut, right?!? ;)

Also I went to the gym super early to get in a spin class before work and I was able to get a kickass workout even tho an instructor whose approach I am not a fan of was subbing for the usual instructor (who’s also not my fave but I do get a good workout when J is on the bike…). So yay for getting in the workout early…AND for justifying my donutty ways ;)

My other favorite: the special victory collection of adrenalines and launches is now live on the Brooks website!

Have the BEST time in Kentucky! My husband and I went there (well, to Lexington…) for a weekend in November and fell in love with the area. So lush and green and pretty!!!

Reply

I need both of those donuts right this second. Great job on the spin class… I miss those! Are you going to get the special victory adrenalines/launches?! Thank you so much… we can’t wait!

Reply

I hope travel today wasn’t too bad!! Isn’t it funny how ‘liking’ an instructor (or not) can make a huge difference in your workout? It’s like the extrinsic motivation matters as much as the intrinsic. I found myself immediately getting into ‘this is it my teacher…let me judge him…’ mode and caught myself right away. I reminded myself that people who come to my classes can easily find a zillion flaws with what I do, and then that my workout is IP TO ME if I don’t want to let THIS instructor be the one who propels me forward. Oh—and afterwards true to my word I did weights. And Sunday morning I will do a 30 min version of Body Pump at home with the Les Mills ONDemand app. I couldn’t make a live class fit my schedule so that has to be good enough, especially since I have a barbell and free weights to make it happen!

Reply

YES I want to see your Floss dance :) Nature’s Bounty Hair Skin Nails gummies are the BEST! I don’t know how they do it, but I’ve tried a few other brands and with those is the first time I saw a noticeable difference in my nails. I just got my mom hooked on them too!

The longest flight I’ve ever taken is probably to London or San Francisco (I live on the east coast)…and speaking of flights..I’m really excited for June because I’m going to Las Vegas (for work with some fun mixed in) and then Europe with my family, pretty much back to back! I CANNOT WAIT!!

Reply

I will post my floss soon;) So good to hear that you love these dummies too… so far so good!Your two trips this month sound amazing! I am so happy you get to do that Anna and I want to hear all about it. Have an amazing weekend:)

Reply

That cookbook is on my wish list! I can’t wait to get it!
We have 3 June birthdays in our house. All within 11 days of each other! It’s birthday central over here! I am totally ok with this though because CAKE!
The longest flight I’ve ever taken is 6 hours to Hawaii. I have a hard time sitting still so it was tough! I want to go to Paris someday and just the thought makes me antsy!!!
Have a great time in Kentucky!

Reply

The cookbook is beautiful so I hope that you get it soon. You have a lot of celebrating this month… Have the best time and eat some cake for me. I have a hard time sitting still so I’ll probably be roaming the aisle with Skye ha. Thanks so much Brandy!

Reply

Where did you get those hair gummies? I need to try something, after my last baby I’m surprised I still have any hair on my head!
My favorite is cottage cheese and peaches…so yummy!

Reply

Hey Karin!! I got mine at Costco but you can get them here too:

Oh I need to try the cc and peach combo! Thanks so much and I hope you have a great day:)

Reply

CC AND BLUEBERRIES FOREVER!
Also, My longest flight ever was from Athens, Greece to Boston. I was 16 and I still remember that 8 hour flight to be SO ROUGH. But I’ve got a 13-hour flight on my schedule this summer so I’m trying to mentally prepare myself for that!
I’ve got a 10 mile long run that I’m doing today after work, and then I’m running our neighborhood’s annual 5k with my family on Sunday. Super excited for a weekend full of running!!

Reply

Thank you so much Kerri for telling me about this combo… it has made me miss grapes a whole lot less! A 13 hour flight… YIKES! Good luck! Have the best time on your ten miler and the 5k and let me know how it goes.

I am doing a sprint triathlon this weekend. I haven’t done one in like 5 years so we will see how this goes. I had a little bike wreck last weekend during a training ride (the gravel won) but hopefully I won’t repeat that tomorrow. I have my Huma gels all ready for the race. That strawberry lemonade one is good!
PS: Happy National Donut Day!

Reply

GO CORRINNE GO! You are going to rock your sprint tri this weekend. Please let me know how it goes and I am SO sorry about your wreck… be safe this weekend! Thanks, I need to find a donut to celebrate with!

Just had to mention- I tried those exact same biotin gummies, and had the *worst* case of cystic acne. Apparently biotin can cause breakouts! Who knew? May not be the case for you, but just in case you notice any changes, it may be because of the biotin!

Reply

Ahhhhh that is awful! I didn’t know this! Weirdly my skin has been better than usual right now but if I have a breakout I will see if it is the gummies! Thank you Marta! I hope you have an amazing day!

Reply

I have a June birthday! And after 10 months of repairing my achilles, I’m happy to say I’m back to running. Small steps….I’m mostly concentrating on building my 5 and 10 km up, but will soon be signing up for a half to motivate me!

Reply

Happy birthday month Melanie… I hope you celebrate all month long! YAY for running again… ten months is so long and you have been so patient. Keep me updated with how your training is going and signing up for your half! Have a wonderful weekend!

i just ordered the Brooke’s patriotic shoes and I am way too excited about it!

The longest flight I’ve been on was SoCal to Greece. This summer will be SoCal to Switzerland. We have one layover. I download lots of movies and bring good reading material and Benadryl ;)

Reply

Also, my kids are 11, 12, and 14 and we still do workbooks over the summer! It helps us to keep a schedule so much better!

Reply

I WANT THOSE SO BAD!!! They are beautiful:) Switzerland… I am so excited for you, that sounds amazing. Oh that is awesome that your kids are still doing the workbooks, we will be too! Have an awesome weekend Marissa.

It’s my birthday this month. And my goal is to have my dating profile ready by the 23rd. Sometimes you just have to put yourself out there. I’m a catch so I’m looking for my catch haha. Good luck on the flight

To a home-body like myself :-), it’s Amazing how much you accomplish in a day – as far as getting lots of outdoor time (by yourself and with the family). Major kudos to you! Best wishes on your flight!!

That’s great to meet a new mom friend!
Brooke looks so precious holding Skye and giving her this loving stare. i’m just mesmerized by this photo. meanwhile Skye is
totally oblivious to Brooke’s love-gaze!

You’ve convinced me – I have been getting bored on my long runs. my friend injured her foot sadly so we haven’t been running together lately. i had listened to so many podcasts when driving to go camping over memorial day weekend that i continued it for Tues’ long run (a procrastinated/missed long run from the weekend). well, it totally worked!

today i’ll long-run home from work using aftershokz which are bone conducting headphones. super fancy but they allow you to hear outside noise which i need. will listen to another podcast if it works. hope i figure this fancy contraption out before i’m done here…

no birthdays here, will be doing a 10K this month and a relay leg of the nyc tri for charity! should be great.

longest flight i’ve taken was 20-22 hours with Qatar from NYC to Singapore. we had a rest stop in Doha (i imagine to refill the plane?) anyway. i was so thankful to be waiting 3 hours at the Doha airport. that sort of flight is just pure torture. i kept trying to yoga and stretch. they do feed you well at least.

long run today and perhaps a run tomorrow. strength work is on the calendar… i am hurting tho from hiking on Sun & speedwork on Wed.

so many amazing running accomplishments! this is so inspiring. love reading these stories

Reply

Janae, thank you for being real. I’ve thought this for a while so I thought I better share it. I appreciate that your photos on your blog aren’t so edited and filtered and everything isn’t always set up to look perfect. That’s the one reason I keep coming back to your blog m. I just appreciate that you are a mom, sharing your love of running and motherhood. It seems that so many blogs now are just so staged and their purpose is to make others envious but I don’t get that from yours. Keep up the good work.

Molly, I cannot thank you enough for your sweet comment. It means a lot to me! I will never change and have perfect pics so do not worry about that:) I hope you are having an amazing day!

Love the hair skin and nails vitamins. Make my hair grow crazy fast!

Have an amazing trip!

We are headed up to Squamish tomorrow – I have a weekend of trail running/racing planned and then we will stay the night in a hotel for a treat.

June birthday – my brother in law in a couple of weeks!

I love reading about running accomplishments :)

I love those gummies! I was having hair loss problems and switched to Monat hair products and they seriously have worked wonders for me. That’s one of my Friday favorites ;)

Reply

We hiked 7 miles in the Texas hill country on our baby moon! I second the Monat comment. It worked for me with hair loss. Sorry about your flight delay that is brutal.

Reply

I’ve never tried grapes and cottage cheese, sounds yummy!

Reply

The banana bread recipe in the Magnolia cookbook is amazing! Make sure to use the square pan as she suggests.

I can’t wait!! Thank you!

I started taking Nature’s Bounty hair, skin, and nails supplements about 2 months ago. Mine aren’t the gummies but not difficult to take. I wasn’t expecting much but my hair has STOPPED falling out! I was starting to freak out at how thin my hair was getting (my mom’s hair is really thinning so that didn’t help my freaking out) and every time I washed or brushed it, it would come out like crazy! Not only has my hair gotten thicker and stopped falling but my nails are growing like crazy too. They used to be brittle and would only grow if I had a gel manicure. Now I have to cut them down every couple of weeks without having them polished.

Reply

HI! regarding your hair loss problem, there is a beauty youtuber called Tati Westbrooks that launched a vitamins line, the brand is called Halo Beauty, it is sold online here http://www.halobeauty.com, I was a little skeptical but it has had very good reviews, the before and afters are very impressing.
