A Big Event + My 10 Running Thoughts

Sometimes it’s my easiest runs that I procrastinate the most.  I had 4 miles to get done and I kept putting it off and decided I was just going to hit the treadmill because it was getting hot out but then I thought of all of you that actually run in the heat… and you inspired me to get outside.  I was happy that I did.

4 miles @ 8:27 average pace and 10 random thoughts to share with you from my run/right after my run.

1.  Actually starting a run might be the most difficult thing (I’m being a bit dramatic).  I think we all deserve a round of applause for starting our runs each day because it is hard to get moving… thank goodness once we get going it is easier (and sometimes it is just once we finish that it feels easier ha;).

2.  St. George this fall will be my 10th marathon and it will be my 3rd time running St. George.  The other marathons I have finished are NYC, Boston, Top of Utah, Utah Valley (twice), Tucson and Salt Lake City.

3.  I prefer courses that go up and down vs flat courses for races.

4.  ENGAGE YOUR GLUTES ENGAGE YOUR GLUTES ENGAGE YOUR GLUTES.  Something I remind myself over and over again while running because I tend to let my hamstrings do the work and my glutes stay lazy.  Oh and my hip drop is currently out of control.  PS this video is AWESOME on this topic and super helpful:

5.  Boxed brownie mixes are actually better than homemade brownies.  If you disagree with this statement please share the brownie recipe that you have found to be better than boxed brownie mixes.

6.  I do not like it when my running shoelaces feel loose at all.  I probably tie my shoes a little bit too snug.

7.   Is this dog up ahead barking because he is excited and happy to see me or is he barking because he thinks my leg looks like a good morning snack?

8.   A red jeep just passed by… Brooke STILL talks a lot about the red jeep that I had (and how we should try to buy it back again) that I sold when she turned 3 years old.  How does she remember that car so well and why is she so attached to that car?

9.  I need something to go on our wall that would be cute to display our kid’s art projects.  Have you seen anything like this?

10.  Breakfast.  Breakfast.  Breakfast.  Breakfast.

If you have IT Band problems you need this R8 Recovery Roller big time.  It hurts so good.  Also, I am noticing my plantar is showing up a tiny bit again (maybe it’s from putting my socks on the wrong feet;)… every time this happens I go back to sleeping on my back.  Sleeping on my stomach is my favorite but sleeping on my stomach causes me to sleep with my toes pointed down the entire night so I either need to move to my back or scoot down on the bed so that my feet are hanging off the edge and not pointed all night.

IMG 1025

Skye’s morning faces are my absolute favorite.  Her excitement to see us and for a brand new day is out of control.

IMG 0893

PS I was looking at an old post for an article and there was this picture of Brooke and I thought it was Skye at first!

IMG 0889

You can always tell when Brooke has been in the room with Skye;)

IMG 0896

This is my attempt to eat a bunch of things in our fridge that might go bad while we are gone.  I hate throwing away food so it is my goal for us to eat everything in the fridge that could go bad before we leave tomorrow!  I had a bowl of steamed broccoli, chicken (from my Costco chicken skewers), spinach, sweet potatoes, eggs and salsa.  It wasn’t pretty but it did the job.

IMG 1031

We went on a little walk later on and the drooling is real over here… teething is happening.  I talked to my sister while walking and she was telling me about how on Monday night her husband saved someone’s life!  Their neighbor had fallen and stopped breathing (he was an older man) and his wife rushed over to get my brother-in-law and he was able to get him to start breathing again.  Pretty incredible.

IMG 1045

KNOX!!!! We have missed him and we get to spend the next 10 days with him.  They were pretty excited to both have flamingo swimsuits.

IMG 1033

They spent most of the day outside playing in the sprinklers on the tramp.

IMG 1048

This was a big event!  Skye and I were just hanging out on the rug and she dropped her paci out of her mouth to the side of her.  Then she rolled from her back to her tummy to get it.  It was her first time doing it ever so I was freaking out over the whole situation.

IMG 1053

One of my favorite snacks:

IMG 1055

For dinner the kids made pizza.  My pizza stone is at my sister’s house so we just used some cookie sheets and they turned out pretty good!  (Trader Joe’s pizza dough, pizza sauce and cheese).

IMG 1058

PS  Andrew bought a pair of the Levitates after I have talked about my love for them so much lately (you can read my review for them here).  He has his long run today (11 miles) and he will be sporting these:

PPS One of the most important days of the year is coming up:

Ever had plantar fasciitis?  What helps you with plantar?

-Sleeping on my back and when it gets really bad I sleep with these boots (which are so beyond amazing) and the boots always fix the problem for me.

Up and down course or a flat course—>  what do you prefer?

Do you sleep on your back, stomach or sides?

So I used to be in the same camp as you that boxed brownies were better until THIS recipe that I came across 5 years ago. These are life-changing! My husband said these are the only ones he wants anymore haha! The BEST brownies: http://onesweetappetite.com/2013/04/brownies/

*Tip* If you make them, keep them in the fridge as they get even fudgier! I prefer them like that, but hubby likes them room temperature.

Reply

The picture of those brownies made me drool. I will officially be making those. Thank you Elizabeth on my quest for the answer to brownies ha:) Thanks for the tips too… our family is going to love these!

Starting the run is actually the most difficult thing about running! I agree!
Flat course all the way! Hills kill me.
I’m not really a fan of brownies…I’d rather have a cupcake.
I actually wrote about my random thoughts during my last run on my blog today too! What a coincidence!

Reply

Right?! It really is so hard! Great minds think alike and we both ran 4 miles… I LOVE IT! Thank you for reminding me about Red Jumpsuit Apparatus ha… I used to listen to them all of the time. Have a great day Erinn!

This right here is the best brownie recipe ever: https://smittenkitchen.com/2010/01/best-cocoa-brownies/

You don’t need baking chocolate, and they’re fantastic . I often double them because we have four boys here. Do not overbake them! Even better if after cooling, you chill them in the fridge before cutting. My MIL always made brownies from a mix and was baffled as to why I would make them from scratch, but my kids have assured me that the scratch brownies are miles better than box brownies.

Reply

Those look heavenly and so dense. THANK YOU and I can’t wait to try them… you are the best. Have a great day Karen!

We are the same way about trips. We leave tomorrow and we have been trying to clear out the fridge. My son just said, “what are we even going to have for dinner tonight”? We will have to get creative:) I bought Girl, Wash Your Face to read on the plane ride. Did you see she has a new cookbook coming out June 5th? Looks interesting!

Reply

Oh fun… Where are you going? I hope you have an amazing day! I did and I will definitely be getting her cookbook, I can’t wait. Please let me know what you think of the book and good luck for dinner tonight haha!

We are actually going on an Alaskan cruise! I think we are going to have to break down and order a pizza tonight:) Have a great day!

To display artwork, I did thumbtacks (eye hooks would be sturdier) and kitchen twine. Then used clothespins to hang art. So easy. We moved and I need to do this in our current house!

Reply

Oh I LOVE that idea Susanne and so cheap… THANK YOU!!! Have a beautiful day Susanne!

I do agree with you—Skye and Brooke definitely resemble each other. And, I think Knox and Brooke kinda look alike, so it’s very cool how your family has blended together perfectly—meant to be :)

I was looking at pics from when my youngest daughter was smaller–for a birthday collage, and I was also stunned at just how much she and my older daughter looked alike at that time!!! Maybe they still do and I can’t tell so much?! I think it throws me off that one has blonde hair and one is brunette!

I can’t stand when my shoelaces are too loose either!!!!!!! Especially my right foot. Very weird. I really do think I’m unbalanced! I guess we all are to some degree!

I ordered my first Mercury Mile box yesterday—kinda like Stitch Fix with running clothes. I figured that I have nothing to lose by trying it, I love getting mail, and I love clothes, so…… I”ll keep you posted as to whether I like what I get!!! :)

I do agree about boxed brownies; HOWEVER, this recipe is AMAZING. If you slightly underbake them, well……………….heaven in the form of a brownie!!!! Try them!

Okay, those brownies do look amazing… I love the peppermint/chocolate combo. I will make them, thank you Jen! That is so interesting that one of your daughters is blonde and the other brunette! Tight shoelace lovers unite;) I have never heard about Mercury Mile, please tell me your thoughts once you get it because that sounds awesome! Have a wonderful day!

For the kids art display check out Hedy Art on Facebook. She custom makes Pieces in Eugene, Oregon but will ship them. I have three of her pieces. She makes one with a wire and small clips you could use to rotate Brooke’s and Knox’s masterpieces. And you could add a fun saying to the it to.

Reply

I just looked at Hedy Art on Facebook and her stuff is BEAUTIFUL. I’m in love with it all! Thank you so much Courtney… have a beautiful day!

Reply

100% agree on the brownie thing! I have tried so many homemade brownie recipes, none are as good as Ghirardelli boxed IMO;)

On the artwork display issue…..Emily Ley on IG has shown how she uses 3 Linen covered cork boards that she added frames to…..one for each kid. displays art for a good amount of time on them and switches them out. Many pieces of art can fit on one board. Pottery Barn sells these types of boards, but they are expensive….I am sure you can make them or find them somewhere else for much, much cheaper.

Reply

I used to LOVE the Ghirardelli boxed brownies but I think they changed something because the last 3 times I’ve made them, they’ve been terrible! I don’t understand.. they used to be perfectly dense and fudgey and now they’re fluffy or something, like cake. I can’t stand it and I’m so bummed.

Reply

oh no!!!! this is such bad news! Maybe my boxes are too old….I haven’t noticed a change….but I have been using my stocked up boxes and haven’t bought any new recently….

Reply

Ghirardelli is my favorite too and that is SO sad to hear that Rachel… HOW COULD THEY MESS UP SOMETHING SO GOOD? I can’t wait to check out Emily Ley, THANKS AMANDA!!!

I live in Mississippi and I prefer running in the heat. I guess I’m just used to it. I always think its crazy when you say 40ish degrees is your perfect running weather. I’m on a treadmill if its under 60 degrees.

Also, the first mile is always the hardest part of the run for me. My legs are waking up, I’m trying to get my breathing in a rhythm, and I’m trying to convince myself to keep going. This is why I try to run as far away from my house as possible. Because I have to somehow get back to my house and if I run, I get there faster. :)

Reply

It really must be just what we are used to… but can you please teach me how to be in the heat a bit better:) We deserve extra credit points for that first mile and I love your theory of getting as far away from your house as possible! Hope you have a wonderful day!

First of all, WAY TO GO, Skye!!!! Also, that French toast looks delicious! Did you use Dave’s Killer Bread?? I think you’ve mentioned that brand before, but I just discovered it, and I feel like I’m not exaggerating when I say that my life has completely changed because of it. :)

I had plantar fasciitis really badly a few years back, and I ended up having to change shoes completely to get rid of it. Thankfully, I haven’t dealt with it since then, but I remember constantly rolling my foot on golf balls and some contraption I bought. I also started focusing on my running form a lot more and making sure I actually use my hips when I run.

Hope you have a great day, Janae!

Reply

Hey Natalie!! We actually used bread that is made locally here… it is white bread but local so I feel good about it;) Dave’s Killer bread really is so amazing! Oh the golf ball… YES!! Thanks Natalie, you too!

Reply

I prefer an up and down course. Flat runs hurt my flat feet!!

For plantar fasciitis, I usually just roll it out on a tennis ball before it gets too bad.

I sleep on my sides and flip a lot during the night. It’s a whole big production, which I’m sure my husband loves?

Reply

Bahaha ‘whole production’… that is hilarious! Have a beautiful day Erin!

Reply

Where are those adorable flamingo suits from??

Reply

Hey!! Both from target… brooke’s Was from last summer and I just bought knox’s Last week! I hope you have a great day.

Reply

I’m glad you posted that video because I was literally just thinking how to fix my hip drop. I realized that I really don’t engage my gluteus much when I’m running so now I’ll be working on that.

I’m a back/side sleeper.

My thoughts on my run this morning we’re about looking strong during races. That was a big deal for me in high school and I did it all wrong haha! I’m not sure if it makes as big of a difference now.

Have a great day!

Reply

YES… her information is amazing! Let’s work on it together:) You look very strong in your pictures! You are doing an amazing job. Thanks, you too girl!

Reply

Hi Janae! You mentioned all the marathons you’ve ran… Any tips for the Utah Valley Marathon? My husband is running it next week and neither of us have run it before. We hear there’s some hills…
Thanks!!

Reply

AHHHHH that is so exciting! So from what I remember the first 7 are pretty fast and then you have four big rolling hills and then a few more and the last 7-8 are a small decline until the finish line. Remind him to not go to fast for that first 7 so that he can save up for the 4 humps (that’s what we call them). Also, let him know that the road that it is on is VERY slanted on the sides to run in the middle of the road to avoid killing his IT band. It’s going to be chilly at the start and be very warm for the last hour (not a lot of shade at that point)… take advantage of the water sprinklers they have. The scenery is UNREAL. He is going to be in awe half the time. Oh and during the first portion it is going to feel really easy since of the downhill but remind him to start taking in fuel early to avoid bonking even though he is going to feel so good. If you have any other questions let me know and please let me know how he does! Have an amazing day Kim!

The King Arthur Flour gluten-free brownie mixes are the absolute best – even if you’re not gluten free. They are generally allergen-free – no dairy, no soy, no gluten. And they are AMAZING.

Off topic, but have you read Abby Wambach’s commencement speech? It’s really inspiring for athletes and non-athletes alike.

Every couple of months, I do a blind-baking test for the people at work. I make one recipe homemade and another recipe using a box mix. I then have people vote on which one they liked the best. I set them out on the table with a number in front and a box with a slot for people to drop their vote. I had always heard that box brownies were the ONE dessert that is better boxed. So far my homemade recipe has won out! The vote is always pretty close though :) King Arthur’s recipe works well (according to my coworkers :) ). It does matter the kind of cocoa powder you use. I tried very dark once and that was NOT a winner. Just regular hershey’s, unsweetened, was a success. It is their “quick and easy” one I’ve tried : https://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/quick-and-easy-fudge-brownies-recipe

Reply

Those ones look DENSE and so delicious! I want to be part of this test and try all of your different creations. Good to know about regular hershey’s unsweetened. I’ll come to the next blind-baking test! Have an amazing day Amanda.

Reply

I don’t have that but I have bunions and am supposed to use a toe separator between my big toe and the next one but don’t. I’m a little stubborn that way. Your procrastination with running reminds me of drawing. Sometimes the hardest hurdle is starting the sketch but once I get going, I’m good. I’m a side sleeper with my hands holding my cheek. Haha. Have a great day, Janae!

I just saw my friend’s garage which had all of the school artwork hanging out there. I’m sure it was in the kitchen for a while first, but I thought what a great idea…all over the garage walls (and those kids are graduating this year.) Plantar…yup, just discovered oofos sandals. Holy cow, they really do work!

Okay, I love this idea so much. We will definitely be doing this now. Thank YOU! I will officially be getting those sandals now since this just randomly popped up again for me. Have a great day!

I have been wanting a “Look What I Did” board to display my daughter’s art. There are ton of them on etsy. They have clips so you can hang a couple pictures. https://www.etsy.com/listing/534916951/look-what-i-did-o-wood-sign-o-rustic-o

And I was totally with you about boxed brownies but now I am looking at all of these recipes other people are posting and now I must try them all!

I think my only thought on my last run was “why is is 90% humidity at 5am????” I also had the Roxanne song “She’s Got the Look” stuck in my head. So that was fun.

Reply

That is adorable… I LOVE that and I need it. 90% humidity… that is insane. Let’s try these different recipes and see what is best. Have a great day Corrinne and thanks for finding that for me!

I struggled so much with PF last year. Honestly, I think I might have been overdoing it with running (and maybe needed some better shoes) so once I started incorporating better rest days, yoga, and cross training, it seemed to fix itself. I haven’t had issues with it this year so far (knock on wood…)
I’d rather have some variety, so up and down is better…but not TOO many ups!
I am a side sleeper but usually I migrate from my side to my stomach. I only sleep on my back when I’m sick. Or when I accidentally fall asleep and take a nap on the couch! :)
I have an AMAZING homemade brownie recipe but I can’t remember where I got it from. They are the best brownies I’ve ever had but they are time consuming.
I ran this morning and I tackled some hills because I have a 7 mile race in July that starts with a GIANT uphill, and I want to be ready. So mainly I was thinking “keep going, keep going, use your glutes, pick up your feet!” I only ran 3 miles but it was almost all ups and downs, with more ups than downs.

Reply

I now NEED brownies in my life! LOL! I’m with you…box all the way. But now I see all these recommendations in the comments and it inspires me to try again.

We use a cable/clip system for our son’s art in the kitchen. I love how simple it is and you can purchase more clips. I am sure we purchased it from Amazon but of course now I can’t find it!
This is similar…

I LOVE THAT!! Thank you so much… that is totally what I was thinking. Thank you Bridgette and let’s try out these different recipes to see if they are right;) Have a great day!

I tend to be a back sleeper, sometimes my side. And boxed brownie’s all the way !!! We love the plain, but we also love the one with caramel mixed in, but our most beloved boxed brownie mix is the half brownie half cookie one. Oh my, it’s a staple in this house. We have a thing with brownie’s. Top of the food pyramid for sure.

Reply

Ha! I’m the same as you, I’ve tried so many homemade brownie recipes and they are never as good as boxed. I love the ghirardelli one you can get at Costco.

I also don’t love flat marathons, they are i think actually harder cause you’re only using the same muscles over and over. That said, I also don’t like having any big hills in the last 6 miles….just let me coast at that point!

Skye is so cute, i love that age in babies, it’s the best!

I completely agree on the brownies, unless I make my neighbor Nicole’s brownies, they are awesome. Recipe is below:

Nicole’s Buttermilk Brownies
Put the following in a big bowl:
• 2 cups sugar
• 2 cups all purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
In a saucepan bring the following to a boil:
• 2 sticks butter
• 6 tablespoons cocoa
• 1 cup water
Once the above comes to a boil pour over ingredients in a bowl and stir by hand to mix in.
Then add:
• 2 eggs
• ½ cup buttermilk
• 1 teaspoon vanilla
Pour onto large cookie sheet and Bake at 350 for 15-20 minutes.

Buttermilk Brownie Icing
Bring the following to a boil:
• 1 stick of melted butter
• 4 tablespoons of Cocoa (Nicole uses Tollhouse Brand)
• 5 tablespoons buttermilk
Once you reach the boil, take off the stove and add a 1# bag of confectioners’ sugar and a splash of vanilla. Let stand 5-10 minutes to frost.
Tip: Nicole freezes leftover Buttermilk since it is rarely used and it defrosts perfectly for the next batch of brownies.

Back and side sleeper, have never slept on my stomach, just don’t think my neck would like it.
I have played a lot of tennis lately so my last run felt awesome, I was on fresh legs, felt like I could just keep going.

Reply

Brownies are my husband’s favorite so I have tried a lot of recipes. It is all about the Baked Brownie. Baked is a well respected NYC bakery. I got their original cookbook as a gift and have been making this recipe ever since. Thanks to the Brown Eyed Baker, the recipe is online too.
https://www.browneyedbaker.com/the-baked-brownie/
(melt the chocolate and butter in the microwave to save time)

I always keep an aluminum can (diced tomatoes) in the freezer for rolling out plantar fascia pains. The metal can stays so cold and seems to fix the pains pretty fast when I roll out the foot several times a day. Plantar fascia is no fun. Hope you feel better!

Reply

Foam rolling my lower legs (hamstrings down to Achilles), hanging my heels off a footstool under my desk during work, ankle /foot circles, rolling a lacrosse ball under my feet, and stretching my toes all help alleviate or head off plantar fasciitis attacks.

I tend to pick flat courses these days–especially near beaches :)

Definitely a side sleeper.

Boxed brownie mixes are so delicious and simple, I’m not sure I’ve ever made them from scratch.

Yesterday with a running clock during a 5x400m with 1-minute rest between, maintaining time within 10 seconds for each: “Did I start too fast?” “Is this the same pace as round 2?” “Humidity is crushing me!” “I’m catching that guy.” “The clock should say X:XX when I get done with this one. Right? Or is my math wrong?”

How amazing that your BIL saved his neighbor! What an experience!!!

Reply

I love the flamingo suits!!

I had the first signs of PF in Dec. 2014 and in Jan. 2015 my plantar started to tear during a race. I finished the race and as I was walking to my car, the pain hit me hard and I sobbed. It was horrific. I had shockwave therapy and I make sure to roll out my feet fairly often and i haven’t had any issues since then.

I agree that I like rolling hills during a race, I feel like it engages more muscles than just wearing out a single muscle group on a flat course.

I make homemade brownies because I need them to be GF. I have found the best trick is to chop up some chocolate chips and add them to the mix :)

Oh, please try these! The reviews alone should sell you. They are a super rich brownie if you are into that kind of thing :)

As for the levitates, I just bought my first pair! I love them so far but will keep them for slower runs as I do find them a bit heavier and bulkier than a speed shoe. Thanks for the recommendation!!

Oh I will have to try these, THANK YOU! I can’t wait. Let me know what you think about the Levitate… so excited you got your first pair!

Seconded!! These brownies are the BEST!!

I had plantar fasciitis a few years ago leading up to my first marathon. I even got a cortisone shot in my foot — I don’t recommend that at all. It didn’t really help me and I have heard that the shot actually weakens the plantar over time. The thing that DID help me was switching to more supportive shoes. I was wearing neutrals and I switched to support shoes. It took a couple months for the PF to heal — it’s slow going, so be patient! But I could still run throughout the recovery. I stuck to easy runs while recovering. I also did a lot of stretching – I stretched everything from my feet, calves, hamstrings, quads, glutes, etc… and I also foam rolled religiously and did plenty of strength training. With time the PF did go away. The hardest thing is being patient and not pushing too hard (i did not do speed) during the recovery time.

IKEA has an awesome art wire we use to display our older daughter’s artwork…you just attach both ends to the wall and then use clips to display the art work. Pretty cheap, easy to change things up, and don’t have to put holes in the art or photos.

That’s so amazing about your bro-in-law! xo

I hung string in my toy room across an entire wall and then I hand the art up with clips. The kids love it and feel so special.

I’ve made these salted dark chocolate chunk brownies from Giada’s Italy cookbook three times since getting the book last month. They are so easy and so delicious. I use Ghirardelli bittersweet chocolate baking chips from the grocery store for the bittersweet chocolate chunks and I only use 1/2 teaspoon of Maldon salt; 1 teaspoon was way too salty, and I love salt.

I’ve had PF for almost 4 years! :( :( My PF in my left foot is almost completely torn away from the bone. I’m kind of hoping that it will just completely tear and then it won’t hurt anymore? ha. It’s miserable. So, not much running for me lately. It’s seriously the worst so I hope yours go away quickly!

Boxed brownies are one of my all time favorite desserts. Can’t be beat!

Reply

I have always said boxed brownies are better too! If you find a good homemade recipe, share on here so I can learn about it too.

And if you discover a way to display art share that as well. I just have it taped on the walls but a cute display sounds nicer and less cluttered looking.

And maybe I need to invest in that recovery tool because I have IT band problems constantly.

Reply

i neeeeeed that R8 recovery roller. it sounds like you love it… can you adjust the pressure?

i’ve not had PF that i know of – hope i don’t ever have to!

i prefer an up and down course i guess? i am mostly used to an up and down course. a flat course can get a little monotonous however i’ll take that over lots of turns in a course…!

i start sleep on my side (fetal) but i usually end up on my stomach or back.

homemade brownies i guess!

this morning’s run – i was looking at the sky wondering is it going to rain? it was really humid and it looked like it was about to. felt some wet on my face. briefly took inventory of nearby subway stations in case it poured…but alas no rain. i had some really long internal conversation going on in me while going over the bridge. but of course now i don’t remember any of it. i just remember thinking, oh, i’m in Manhattan already (ran in to work from home as a commute). i also thought, oh i could eat right about now. dammit i’m in mile 1… lol :)

yesterday’s run: i was running behind a lot of people on a path – right next to a planted garden wall (to beautify the path). there were these large purple blossoms and i was thinking oh that’s pretty. i guess i was breathing with my mouth open, and all of a sudden i noticed a humongous bee flying out of my mouth. i guess it flew in, realized i was breathing and flew out. i was just kind of surprised and stunned, but kept running. i thought about closing my mouth but figured i needed to breathe and air is important so i kept on running with my mouth wide open. hah!

that’s scary and what a relief that your brother in law saved someone’s life!

Reply

nice work about getting out for a run even tho it was hot out –
and thanks for posting that vid! i am always killing my quads, IT band and hamstrings and having to rehab them, and i’m definitely not using my glutes. it’s on my to-watch list.

Reply

1,000% agree on the “Breakfast. Breakfast. Breakfast.” thought! It is truly the only thing that gets me through a run in the morning… I mostly just have to be careful not to think too hard on that thought that it makes me cut the run short just to get home to my eggs and oatmeal!!
Re displaying kid art, my mother has a few of these frames (https://amzn.to/2J8p17p) and they are AMAZING and so easy to change out for new art. She rotates my little sister’s art in and I love seeing the new addition every time I visit home!

Hurray for milestones!!!! Go Skye!!!! Very exciting!

I use Trader Joe’s gluten free brownie mix (even though I am not gluten free) they are so fudgy! A little on the sweet side, but it’s ok. My one word of advice is they always need more time to bake than the package says.

PF is such a pain….I had it once. I got rid of it with constant calf stretching and massage with a tennis or lacrosse ball. And yes, trying my best to not go into plantar flexion at night was key. If you need another contraption, get the pro stretch calf stretcher.

I’m a side sleeper for the most part, but occasionally wake up on my stomach.

I prefer flat courses… I have to run on hills every time I run, so it’s a nice change of pace.

Homemade brownies! This is the easiest recipe and they come out fudgey and delicious every single time! They’re definitely not even close to healthy though… https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/10707/mmm-mmm-better-brownies/

Thoughts on my last run: “why does it have to be 88% humidity!?!?”

Thanks for sharing the glute activating video; I struggle with weak glutes ?

How do you roll out the TJ pizza dough? I have tried several times and end up with an icky mess! Thanks so much for your help!

Hey Vicki!! So I make sure to let it sit out on the counter for about an hour before I roll it out and then I put some flour on the counter and on my rolling pin before I roll it out. I know what you mean though… the dough is very sticky so add a bit of flour. Good luck, it’s delicious. Have a wonderful evening.

That is so exciting that St. George will be your 10th marathon!! I am sure you will crush it – I will eagerly be awaiting the race recap for the next couple of months ;)

These are some of my FAVORITE brownies – super gooey and the recipe calls for sweet potatoes (mom win!)

Thank you for posting that video, Janae! It was super helpful to me and I can’t wait to activate my glutes when out on my next run.

I love that Skye is so happy for each new day. Her smile is contagious. :)

100% boxed brownies…..only Ghirardelli dark chocolate brownie mix!

I found rolling my foot on a golf ball after running for 5 minutes helps a lot with PF! The stretch toes pose in yoga helps too! I like a course with rolling hills!

Hey Janae, I’ve made these brownies so often and man are they a hit.

I thought I would share since I love every recipe you share on your blog. I think I’ve made your Chocolate Chip Cookies roughly 1500 times (They are saved in my recipe app under Janae’s Chocolate Chip Cookies). I add a teaspoon of salt to the dough, or sprinkle the cookies with a little salt right before baking and man, oh, man oh man!

Thanks for your blog! Love it!

This makes me SO SO happy! I’m glad I’m in your phone on your recipe app! Great idea to add the salt… I am going to try that! And I need those brownies, thank you so much and I hope you are having a great night!

You’ve inspired me to make brownies tonight for my study sesh! (Friend of Andrew’s here from his nursing cohort… I’ve read your blog for years but never commented and what a small world to end up realizing you’re Andrew’s wife!)

I LOVE this recipe. Super easy and I think it rivals the box mix: http://www.runningwithspoons.com/2014/12/12/flourless-double-chocolate-brownies/

These brownies are AMAZING! They are the only kind I make now. They’re thick and gooey but the outside gets a thick crispy-ness, the best of both worlds!

The brownie recipe on the back of the Bakers Unsweetened chocolate box is the best hands down.

For our kids’ art, we hung up the wire curtain rod from Ikea: https://m.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/art/60075295/ and use the little clips to hang their art. Inexpensive and looks so cute in our hallway. Plus, it’s super easy to change out their masterpieces whenever they create something new.

Thank you for posting the video on activating your glutes! Struggling with hamstring issues lately and I realize now that this is probably why. Very grateful.

Oh that makes me so happy… check out her other videos too, she offers a lot of helpful advice! Good luck with your hamstrings!

I’m a little late to the game, but I thought I would contribute the brownie recipe I use. If you like super fudgy brownies, then these are the ones you need in your life. I always double the recipe. SO GOOD!

The box brownie mix comment has me laughing. I 100% agree. I love baking and all things homemade but i cannot make a better brownie than Duncan Hines boxed mix

Great post, but it just left me craving homemade pizza!
