Wise Advice for My Perfectionism Problem + Friday Favorites!

Thanks again mom for making it possible for me to run outside while Andrew had another shift at the hospital yesterday.  Also, I was happy we were both wearing pink and as you can tell by my face, I got HOT during my run.

I set out a different direction than normal and made sure to watch every step while on this sidewalk.  One time I fell on this very sidewalk from a crack and I was not about to repeat that occurrence again.

IMG 2507

Gotta love this advertisement for a race!  I’ve done this marathon twice and half marathon three times, it’s a good one.

IMG 2505

Yesterday’s workout looked like this—>  60 minutes easy followed by 4 x 20 seconds at around a 6:20 pace with 60 second recovery!

IMG 2528

I started off with a long sleeve shirt and tied that around my waist during mile six (80 feet of elevation gain in that one mile)!  Skye slept the entire time while at my mom’s house and during a few errands too.

IMG 2526

And then she and I hung out for a bit before picking up the kids from school.

IMG 2533

Lunch with a side of a tea party with Brooke and Knox.  I combined 2 eggs, chicken, cheese, spinach and green peppers and put that all on top of a sweet potato.

IMG 2541

And then I went through the entire fridge (IT WAS BAD) and cleaned every part of it, it took a long time.

IMG 2556

A little bit more hanging out while Brooke and Knox were playing.

IMG 2549

And then we went to the park and it was 61 degrees.  Does this mean spring is here?!?

IMG 2554

For dinner we had pancakes (for the 50th time this year) with peanut butter and they were delicious.  They sounded good, the kids were hungry and Skye was in her fussing stage of the day so something easy for dinner was a must.  I started thinking about how I wish I was one of those Pinterest cooks making amazing/elaborate meals for my family each day but I’m pretty far from that ever happening.  And then I thought about something my dad used to tell me when I was in college.  I was a STRESS case in school.  I stressed about each assignment, test, percentage… everything.  I remember one time when I was so stressed over a Physical Science test coming up and having no clue what was going on in the class, my dad said to me, “Janae, don’t worry, C’s get degrees.”  Basically he was saying that you don’t have to get straight A’s, it’s okay to get some B’s and some C’s.  I’ll still get my degree without a perfect report card.  It’s not all about the grade anyways, it’s about doing your best and learning along the way.

So, when it comes to things like cooking… I just have to remind myself that C’s get degrees;)  I’m sure I’ll get some A’s in some areas of life but B’s, C’s, D’s and even some F’s are part of my current report card too and that’s okay.  Thanks Dad.

Time for some Friday Favorites!

*I bought a few of these t-shirts from Gap and they are so soft, long and I’m loving them… I fit into about 7% of my pre-Skye wardrobe so I’ve been getting some new things:)

*I bought a pair of these to wear around (errands, the park, random kid stuff) and I just think they are really cute.  I haven’t worked out in them so I don’t have a review for that but I just really like them.

IMG 2561

*For those of you that watched the Bachelor this last season, this spoof by Nick Viall and Dean Unglert is hilarious!

*Marie sent me this article about the most popular cereals in each state!  Here in Utah we are all about Life I guess!  A ton of states had Oreo O’s for their most popular cereal and I had no idea so many people love those.

*The Champion with Carrie Underwood and Ludacris… SUCH A GOOD RUNNING SONG!

*Hahah YES.. I knew Andrew was the one when he told me about his love for Costco and their samples.

IMG 0073

*Rhiannon sent me this yoga video (it’s for runners) and I tried half of it last night, it was awesome!

*How cool is this?  I want to start making pictures with my Garmin when I go running!

IMG 2494

*I didn’t use this during pregnancy but just started to use Vital Proteins Collagen again for a few reasons but mainly for my hair… I am losing quite a bit of hair postpartum (this did not happen with Brooke?!) and my hair dresser friend recommended trying Collagen along with the shampoo/conditioner I am using to help!

IMG 2492

*Stephanie Bruce on her Instagram said, “Mental toughness is finding fuel in an empty tank.”  I love that.

*When we were going around during dinner and saying what we are thankful for Brooke said, “I am thankful for myself.”  I love that too.

LORIBETH!!!  “I just ran my 11th half marathon on Sunday, March 4th in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  This race is on it’s 3rd year and I have run it each year.  The weather was perfect… around 36 degrees at the start and around 50 degrees at the finish.  I was nervous going into it because I had a tough race in November that had me stressed a bit for this one, not to mention a ridiculously cold January where we had 2 weeks where temps did not get above freezing all day… not normal for us.  That made me shorten several runs, and I felt a bit under trained.  But I have always heard it is better to be under trained and uninjured than going to the starting line worn out or hurting.  Turns out that’s right… even though I usually do a 13 miler before race day, I only made it to 10 miles in training but still managed to come out only 6 minutes shy of a PR!  I have a PR of 1:58 and I came in at 2:03:49.  So happy!  I loved that with the larger field this year they started us in waves, the first time they have done that.  I hopped in the second wave at the front… this got me some awesome photos when we took off, and made me feel really cool for a half mile or so while I was leading the pack, ha!  I loved the course, the weather, the crowds, and everything about it… a great race!”

Yay, my race recap! I have done that race each year for 3 years now, and I am a streaker in another half….this will be year 6………I hope to keep it up for a long time!

Not sure about those cereals, the answers seem off. Honeycomb? I prefer lots of cereals over Honeycomb.
This weekend is pet sitting and running in all the green I can to show off the launches with shamrocks on them before next saturday!

Have a great week, and PS Skye is the cutest.

You are an amazing mom! You prioritize what’s the most important for your kids and for you as a person. That deserves an A all the way! And btw I can’t cook pancakes and managing one kid takes everything I have lol so we can’t be happy comparing ourselves to the things people choose to post on Pinterest :-)

Mel, you are the best. Thank you so much… I hope you are having a beautiful day and I hope you know how happy your comments always make me!

Don’t worry about the postpartum hair losing! It’s totally normal (though disconcerting while it’s happening.) You may not have even noticed it, but your hair got nice and thick while you were pregnant. Now the “extra’ is falling out (it’s a hormonal thing) and in the end you’ll be back to normal. Luckily your normal hair is gorgeous so it all works out fine!

Reply

Oh thank you Jenny! That is so true, my hair got way thicker while pregnant! So good to hear this is all normal:) I hope your weekend is amazing!

I broke out my winter coat this morning which is really messed up because it’s Florida but a 20 degree temperature drop with humidity feels freezing.

Next week is school vacation so this weekend is officially the start of vacation! Staycation for me and sadly my husband still has to work. He’s really excited that we’re going to see Black Panther with him this weekend though.

Reply

How is Life on that list for SO many states, but Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Honey Nut Cheerios didn’t even make the cut??!

This weekend, I’m going to Winter Camp with the high school ministry at my church, and I’m so excited to see what God does in the lives of all of these teenagers! Also, I love that Brooke said she’s thankful for herself. More people should do that more often. :) Have a great weekend, Janae!!

Reply

How beautiful that you are so involved in your church community! At what point in your life did you grow the closest to God?

Reply

Hi, Linda! Honestly, I would say the last few years have grown me closer to the Lord than ever. I’ve been through heartache, multiple kidney surgeries and hospital stays, and huge life changes, and I’ve been reminded of His sufficiency and how much I need to depend on Him ALWAYS!

The collagen peptides have done wonders for my skin, hair and stomach. I mix some into a smoothie almost everyday. If I skip two days in a row, my nausea comes back. I can’t say enough good things about Vital Proteins. I hope it works great for you, too! I also love that you can use the box to send back donations for those in need!

Reply

No way… that is so cool that it has helped with your stomach so much too! I love it! Enjoy your day Michelle!

Ahh – Yes that Carrie Underwood song is an excellent running song! Love the video too. But I really love your Dad’s words on the grades. I read that section to my 10 year old. She compares herself with the A students and is really struggling to believe me that it’s not the grade but that you’re trying and doing you’re best. And she’s a very decent student, she’s got A’s, B’s and C’s scattered throughout her report card. Sometimes “someone else’s” advice and words are better than Mom’s. lol Then I point out how hard art class is for many kids, and she rock art and crafts all day long. We’re in the 30’s, so we are just at that middle stage of winter wanting to leave and signs of springs wanting to enter. But all depends on the wind, clouds and sun that day. We have a big huge weekend of basketball. We live in a teeny tiny small town. And our high school boys made it to state ! This is a pretty big deal here. They play today and if they win, they play tomorrow for 1st or 2nd. But to get 3rd or 4th and have had the opportunity to make it that far, is very awesome for them. This is one hoppin small town this weekend. Our local movie theater is even playing the game for locals who can’t travel to see them in person. That’s what we’re doing, comfy seats, big screen and popcorn !

I’m a big fan of Life too. It’s always been a favorite of mine.

I was hoping to run the Utah valley 10k this year. I’m hoping I get healed up quick enough here to be ready in time for it still.

The weather!! I’ll be spending time outside this weekend.

Reply

I am in love with my flyknits! I wear them to school on jeans days ;) So comfortable! I might have to snag a pair of the all black ones though, my white soles never stay clean!
I’m sharing my Friday favorites on my blog today! I’m loving the book Wonder!
It’s still WINTER here in Virginia…we have a big snowstorm in the forecast this weekend….not sure if I’m excited for that or not!
I can’t wait for family time! And being able to hold my 2 month old niece!

Reply

Wonder was such a good book!! Have you read all the little mini books that go with it? I want to see the movie eventually

Reply

Hey Janae! Love that you found Five Parks Yoga, I practice with her videos pretty much everyday aand I love them!
I have run the Madrid half for two years now and this will be my third, I love it! I also always do the New Years’ Eve 10k where more than 40000 (yes you read that right) participate aand it is such a blast. I raced a 10k last week in 44 minutes which is not bad for me and thinking aabout racing a 5k this saturday. Going shopping with my mom tomorrow for my bday present and just quite a bit of studying (I finish my degree in two months yey)
As always thank you for aalla your inspiration and sweetness. I love how you and your cute family make me smile every day :)

Your bowl of chicken, cheese, peppers and eggs looks AMAZING! Will you come live with me and make me delicious snacks like that?? :-)

That Bachelor spoof was so funny, I laughed out loud!

I don’t know how I feel about that cereal list…Michigan had Oreo O’s? I don’t even know what those are and I’ve lived here all my life, hah.

I am SO jealous of your weather!! I can’t wait until it warms up here and we can get outside more! We keep getting gross snow!! I hope you have a really great weekend, Janae!

Reply

I’ve been taking Vital Proteins Collagen peptides for a while. I even took them while pregnant. You might notice an improvement in your joint health and recovery after running. I do Crossfit and run and it has really helped me recovery and makes my joints feel great. Not to mention my hair stayed really thick after pregnancy. I just blend mine in my coffee each morning.

Reply

Oh that is awesome Megan! I love all of the benefits! I hope you are having a great day!

Here in Boston it was summer 2 weeks ago and I went to the beach then we got 10 inches of snow yesterday…. So annoying!! As for this weekend, I am looking forward to being done with my (dreaded) 20-mile training run tomorrow- and then eating all of the brunch:)

Reply

C’s get degrees is my motto right now! I’m halfway through my master’s degree and have never gotten below an A (ever-high school, undergrad, and my program now). Well, grad school as a stay-at-home mom to a 4 month old baby is pretty hard! My grades aren’t so great this semester and I have to keep reminding myself that it’s okay because my priorities are different. Although I’m still aiming for at least B’s.
And I think you get an A for pancakes for dinner! The kids were happy and you ate dinner as a family-that’s what’s important :)

Reply

I for one, love that you are not the Pintrest cook 100% of the time. My Friday favorite have come from your blog recently. Purple Bag of Boom Chicka Pop, and putting spinach in my eggs, brilliant.

Have a great weekend Janae……..my life spans the report card too!

It’s starting to feel like spring in TX. It even SMELLS like spring…lots of yard and flower bed prep going on here.
Whenever you post pics of your food, I think “that looks like what I eat” My H says I will eat ANYTHING if you put it on a sweet potato HA!! I like cooking, but I don’t always make a big deal with meals during the week. I just need some sort of meat and veggies or a big salad and I’m a happy girl.
I’m looking forward to a shopping event (workout clothes) with some of my running girlfriends tonight.
I ran the Cowtown Half Marathon last month. It was my 10th time (in a row) running the half and my 11th year running a race there. The first year I did the 10k.
I just love that Brookie is thankful for herself…that is AWESOME! Skye is quite the smiley girl lately :)
Have a great weekend!!

What kind of shampoo/conditioner are you using? Mine is falling out right now too and it’s always one big knot which is weird for my hair. I have been hearing about collagen and thinking about trying it.

My Friday favorite is my target find last night: Kodiak Cake Blueberry lemon Muffin mix! I can’t wait to make them!

It’s still winter here near Chicago. So sunny out but still under 40 degrees.

I’m really looking forward to dinner with good friends and our first time out without the baby.

Reply

I need that muffin mix! Let me know how it tastes! I’ve been using the stuff in this post:

I think the collagen is really going to help too! Enjoy your night out tonight wahooo!

The muffin mix is delicious!!

I’m currently 4 months postpartum and I just registered for the Utah Valley Marathon! Looking for another BQ! ? It has been tough getting speed back post-baby but working on it.
I live in Park City and it totally feels like spring!
And the collagen should help your hair, I’ve been using it for over a year and my hair and nails are in great shape. Be warned – Skye’s nails may start growing like crazy. I’m nursing and my son’s nails need to be trimmed constantly! I swear it’s the Vital Proteins!

Reply

Okay that is crazy interesting about Skye’s nails growing fast when I am using the collagen! Ummmm I am obsessed with park city! I want to live there. So excited for you to run utah valley… I wish I could be there this year but we will be out of town! You are going to rock it!

I had cereal this morning for the first time in a long time and it made me think of you. I mixed Raisin Bran and Kashi go lean. It tasted so good after a long run on the treadmill! I am traveling for work right now and will take what I can get (food and running wise)! It is definitely winter in Wisconsin… which meant treadmill for sure. I admire you for your cold weather outdoor runs. I just can’t do that when it’s both dark in the morning and cold.

I may have to get some fly knit shoes. They look amazing! C’s do get degrees. That is an Excelent mantra and applicable to all things life.

Happy Friday!!

Lucky Charms is our family favorite! We have my oldest daughters play off basketball game hoping to cheer her team to victory.
Pancakes for dinner is perfect. My youngest was so fussy at dinner time I wore her in the baby carrier from 4:30-7:30 every night so I could still eat and help the bigger kids.
We have cold temps and wind, with no snow. The kids are pretty disappointed to bundle up and it adds 15 min to our getting out the door time. Lol

I felt like we were finally getting into some spring weather and then POOF random cold front came through. Although, it looks to be settling in the 60s so I think that’s as cool as it’s going to get around here.
I need to check out that song, I love Carrie Underwood!
I’m looking forward to some sleep this weekend. It feels like I’ve been waking up with some form of upset stomach every day
this past week so I haven’t been getting a full night of rest. Hopefully I am able to sleep well tonight!

what shampoo are you using for the hair loss?

Hey Denesse!!! I am using the shampoo and conditioner in this post!

I noticed that you’re wearing a Lululemon Swiftly tech tee in your pink shirt pics! I LOVE those shirts. They’re my favorite long-sleeve and tanks! We don’t have much short-sleeve weather here in PA–it’s either cold or hot!

It’s funny that you mentioned Vital Proteins. I’ve been thinking over the last few days about trying that. Maybe your using them is another sign to actually try them. ha ha

Hope you have a fantastic weekend. I’ll be running, doing yoga, and going to a vendor show tonight to buy some delicious macarons. :) All about those sweets!!!!

Reply

I think it is definitely a sign Jen… you need the vital proteins:) Oh I have a few of the long sleeve and tanks too, they are the best. Thanks Jen and enjoy your weekend, it sounds perfect!

My Friday favorite is simply that it’s Friday! It’s been a long, busy week!
I’m jealous of 60 degrees!
My best friend is joining me in some workout classes this weekend and that’s probably what I’m most looking forward to. Friends who sweat together, stick together, right?!

Reply

Also I’m really glad you liked that video!

I just got some collagen powder and love it! I used to take the pills but it was 6 horse pills a day. Also, we just got this shoulder massager for about $40 that was on Jillian Michael’s friday favorites and oh my gosh, it’s the best thing ever. You can place it anywhere, so your neck, upper shoulders, lower back. It’s awesome! Sometimes I get knots in my upper shoulder or lower back and it gets it right out. Feels like spring here and I love it. It’s spring break for us this week and my husband took time off, too, so I’m super excited to spend the week with my family. Have a great day, Janae!

Reply

I NEED THIS!!! Where are Jillian Michael’s friday favorites so I can get one of these:) It sounds great. Enjoy spring break. Thanks so much Marie!

Three months post partum with both kids, my hair fell out a lot! Then it stopped and it did it again when I stopped nursing with they were 15 months each, but not as badly.

Reply

Really!?! That is so interesting… these hormones are crazy! Thanks for sharing Jodi and I hope you are having a great day!

Reply

Did anyone use maca powder for balancing hormones? Possibly coordinated with milk thistle tea to keep the liver happy while balancing.

Reply

My supper routine would get a C most nights and I’m okay with that. Gotta feed the hungry clan before total chaos ensues!

Last week I ran a ‘Tator Tot Trot’ – I went thinking it was a 5k and then quickly learned that it was not… you had to run 1 mile, eat a small dish of tator tot casserole, and then run 1 mile back. Craziest race I’ve ever been in!

Reply

Do they have hormone tests for post baby care? If one was to get to root causes, they would want to know progesterone and estrogen levels, for example. I didn’t do it, but I think this is the way forward. I think it is a commitment – like daily draws for a month. People vary and the person …. It’s all about the base – the root cause. Is it important? Well, what else is affected other than hair? Is hair the tip of the iceberg? It’s worth the time to get some mastery on this. Do hormones impact snoring? It’s all circuitous.

There’s probably another method like monitoring your energy and if it drops, your progesterone took a dive.

I mentioned maca powder in a reply above. It’s not modern like collagen powder. One thing about collagen powder – what’s the source? Is it the marrow? Is it the collagen-rich area of the skeleton?

Reply

I have a friend whose son always told her, “D is for diploma.” I prefer C gets a degree though!!!

Reply

Tell your dad thank you… I so needed to hear that “C get degrees [in mommying],” too. ? BTW do you promise those T-shirts are long? They look so short in the pictures!!

Reply

So I am 5’8″ and they go to my hips (I mean, they aren’t long like covering my butt butt) and I really like them… I hope you have a great weekend!

Reply

Hi Janae!! I started using collagen recently and although it might be just in my head, it really helped to alleviate some stomach issues I had been having. And if it gives me a nail/hair boost….bonus!!! I use Within Us brand since it is marine and not beef (personal preference).

The advice about a C getting a degree is such a great reminder. Wish I had had that mindset while getting my Doctorate in Physical Therapy…my goal was perfection…and it was stressful beyond belief.

This weekend….just hoping to get power restored after Quinn. It’s been 48 hours without electricity so far and they are estimating we will be out until the 14th!!! I can tolerate the lack of light/tv/electronics….but no heat?!?!? That’s my kryptonite! I’ll take any prayers you want to offer!

Reply

WHAT?!?! Are you kidding me, I am so sorry Caroline and my prayers are coming your way! Let me know how everything goes! So good to hear about the collagen helping you so much, thank you!

Reply

I can’t believe Wyoming’s was All-Bran. That is not a cereal you eat because you want to you eat it because you have to. That being said I don’t eat cereal much but I love frosted mini wheats. I don’t even buy them because I eat the box so fast! My favorites things today are my Nyx Love You So Mochi eyeshadow pallete. The eyeshadows are squishy when you press your finger into them so they are fun to use! And taking my 10 month old little boy to the library and listening to him giggle when he would see other kids. This weekend we are going to my cousins wedding. Here in St. George it definitely felt like spring today!

Reply

Love Brooke’s comment, I think she got some of your Mom’s wisdom! And I love what your Dad said too! I’m pulling quite a few C’s myself right now, and he’s right, it’s just fine. There are times for A’s and times for C’s and it’s good to give ourselves a little grace! Happy weekend!

Reply

I think I’d like yoga a lot more if I could do it in the same setting as the instructor in the video. LOL

Janae – this is one of my favorite motivational video clips to watch/listen to. It’s also a great length to do repeats to. The intensity of the music builds which also lends itself to building your speed throughout the interval. Just thought you might enjoy.

Haha, I love Brooke’s comment on what she’s thankful for. That made me giggle out loud. Happy Sunday :)
