Tuesday Tangents + It’s funny how your body…

THAT TIME CHANGE was rough (for everyone in our family;).  It’s crazy how one hour can just mix it all up so much.  I got out for the first half of my run, took Brooke to school and then finished up the second half of my run after that.  It’s crazy how on Saturday I was doing paces in the low 7’s and feeling comfortable and then today’s run at an 8:49 average (8 miles) felt just as difficult and maybe even more difficult than my Saturday run.  Our bodies sure like to keep us guessing.  I guess it would get boring if we always felt great all the time right?

It was a gorgeous morning though and I enjoyed catching the sunrise.

IMG 2838

I had a protein smoothie for breakfast and was ready for lunch by eleven!  I put together a salad with rotisserie chicken from Costco and then had some fruit and toast.  One piece with pb and one piece with honey butter because I couldn’t make up my mind on which one to have.

IMG 2846

Every now and then Brooke will go into full-blown crafting mode and come up with the most artistic creations and yesterday was one of those days.

IMG 2847

I think it might officially be spring here so I dressed Skye accordingly.

IMG 2841

I am quite happy to be back to seeing this scene again.  We went on a little walk until Skye started falling asleep and then we rushed home because she takes much better naps at home vs the carseat.

IMG 2844

A bit later and Brooke had gymnastics class.  She has mastered the handstand!

IMG 2854

Right after gymnastics we drove up north to go to dinner with Andrew’s parents to celebrate his birthday.  On the car ride up we talked a lot about how we are going to get me that sub 3 marathon.  I’ve been craving this goal a lot lately.  Andrew is all about getting me to this goal too. I lucked out with how supportive he is of my goals because this one is definitely going to take some work.

IMG 2857

Andrew requested Texas Roadhouse for dinner and somebody was a little bit excited about the rolls.

IMG 2859

Skye was eyeing everyone’s food.

IMG 2863

After dinner we hung out at my in-law’s house.

IMG 2872

And had pie and ice cream…. and then all three girls fell asleep on the drive home.

Time for a few tangents!

*YES TO ALL OF THESE THINGS!!!

IMG 2805

*I’ve got a new Skye update coming your way later this afternoon.

IMG 2853

*She is working really hard on Andrew’s bday gift for tomorrow!

IMG 2849

*Andrew sent me a picture of this drawer of candy that he found online.  My dream kitchen will include the below scene, a pebble ice machine, a Costco door (its a little door that goes from the garage directly to the pantry so that you can just unload your groceries from the garage straight to your pantry), a salad bar that someone comes and stocks daily and two ovens (for all of the cooking that I don’t do;).

IMG 2735

*Knox found one of my old cameras so he has become the selfie champion.

IMG 2840

*We have finally tried the Frywall so I thought I would tell you what we thought about it—>  WE LOVE IT.  It is so easy to clean and keeps all of the bacon grease in the pan rather than all over the stove and burning my skin.

IMG 2711

*My workout tomorrow is kind of scaring me a bit.  It’s short but painful.  I’m going to keep reminding myself of this truth when I’m wanting to quit.

IMG 2708

*Another bag bites the dust.  And sadly we didn’t pick up another bag of boom chicka pop when we were at Costco.  I might have to go back today to get some.

IMG 2625

*In this article ‘6 Rules to Determine How Many Miles Per Week to Run’ they included some suggestions for how many miles to run based on what distance you are training for.  For my half-marathon and marathon training I’m usually around 45-55 miles per week and I’ve never trained specifically for the 5k/10k so I’m not sure about that but this looks about right:

Have any Tuesday Tangents to share today?!

On average how many miles per week do you train for different distances?  The 5k, 10k, half-marathon, marathon?

What are some cool things that you would put into your dream kitchen?

How many times a week are you working out in nature/outside?  What benefits do you feel when working out outside?

Hi Janae:)

Loving to be catching up on your blog today. You’re always so inspiring to me. I’m currently training for a 5k and my average weekly mileage is around 15 miles per week. I only run outside once a week, on Saturdays for my long run. The reason for this is because the only time I have to run in the week is at 5am in the morning before work. So, I instead of being by myself out there in the dar I just go to the treadmill. That is why my long run outdoors is something I’m always looking forward to on Saturdays.

Reply

YES YES YES… when I could only run at 5 a.m. I was ALWAYS on the treadmill. I do not run in the dark alone! You are doing great Nathaly and I can’t wait for you to rock your 5k!

I don’t know if it’s pebble ice, but I found the best ice at Mod Pizza. It looks like little tiny balls of hail, and it is so so so good. I could go for one of those ice machines, too!

One of my favorite parts of running is just being outside in nature. It’s so so so good for the soul.

We don’t go hiking nearly as often as we should as a family, but afterwards, we’re always like, “Why don’t we do that more often?!” Just being out there, in nature, sun on our faces, NO PHONE RECEPTION are all such wonderful things!!!!!!!!!

OOOOOH, guess what I’ve been enjoying? Cookie dough flavored chocolate Easter Eggs. Like peanut butter eggs, but with cookie dough in them. My neighbor’s niece made them, and they are amazing. I’m thinking we need to place another order for a dozen more. lol Easter is so soon—doesn’t feel like it!!!!

Reply

Well, now I need to go try that ice asap! Sounds perfect. I totally agree with you about hiking. We are planning to get in a lot of that this summer with the kids and a little pack to put Skye in. Okay, I need to order those Easter Eggs… does she ship?! Have a wonderful day Jen!

Reply

I just ordered a dozen more cookie dough eggs. Lol I will seriously mail you one. If you’d like, just email me a shipping address! [email protected] :)

I usually run around 40 miles per week, regardless of what I’m training for, though lately it’s been in the 30s because I’ve been adding a lot more circuit strength training and am not really training for anything right now. I want to find a goal race, though, and build up my mileage a bit more.

My dream kitchen would be stocked with a cake batter froyo machine (and maybe a few other flavors, too), gummy bears, and an endless supply of Wheat Thins.

And as for your tough workout, YOU’VE GOT THIS, JANAE!!!!! You are going to get that sub-3—I just know it!

Reply

Okay, I totally agree with you on the froyo machine:) We need one of those too! Thanks so much Natalie and GOOD JOB on all of your circuit strength training! You are rocking it!

Reply

I bet Brooke is loving gymnastics class! So cute!
I usually run an average of 15-20 miles per week, but more if I’m training for a half or something.
My dream kitchen would have a HUGE island!
I always run outside! Only if the weather is truly awful do I take it to the treadmill ;)

Reply

Thanks so much Erinn! Oh a huge island (with a sink and dishwasher on it) is my dream too:) I hope you are having a wonderful morning!

Reply

That sunrise photo is beautiful! You have such gorgeous scenery to run in.

And I don’t know how it can happen, but Skye gets cuter every day!

My dream kitchen would have lots of counter space. I’m in an apartment with very little counter space and I dream of the day that I can just spread out and have room for all my cooking gear.

Reply

Oh thank you so much Joy, I totally agree! Oh I hope that you get that dream kitchen with SO much counter space someday! Enjoy your day and thanks for commenting today:)

Reply

My dream kitchen would have an appliance garage to stash the Instant Pot and mixer, and an eating bar. I’d also love a fancy ice machine dispensing Sonic ice cubes. The Frywell looks cool, I always splatter on the stove, but lately we’ve been baking bacon! 375 degrees for 14 minutes, with bacon spread on a foil lined baking sheet. It definitely has helped me to minimize arm burns.

Have a great day!

Reply

I want those things in my dream kitchen too:) I should try baking our bacon, great idea Jenny… thank you and I hope your day is a great one too!

Reply

Congrats to Brook on the handstand! What an accomplishment! I love the Costco drawer idea! I’ve never heard of it but it’s genius. I would also love a refrigerator that is wide and shallow so nothing can get lost in the back. I don’t even know if this exists but I want it.

Reply

I will ready Brooke your comment today, thank you! Your refrigerator idea is brilliant… you should invent one and patent it.. I’ll buy it:) Thanks Ali and enjoy your Tuesday!

Loved your kitchen ideas – especially the Costco door! I would add either a big pantry or a Butler’s pantry to my kitchen. I love cooking and have so much stuff to store!

When I was little we had a candy drawer that wasn’t quite as fancy as your picture, but my mom kept it stocked with bulk candy from the grocery store – like peppermints, butterscotch, Tootsie Rolls. She also kept bags in all the cars! I didn’t realize how strange this was until I became an adult. When I asked her why she did it, she said it was because her best friend growing up had a candy drawer; she vowed as a girl to have one when she grew up. So she’s did! :)

Reply

I think I would get along really well with your mom:) I love that she actually did what she said she would as a kid ha… she is awesome! I hope you are having a beautiful day and that you get those dream kitchen things someday:)

Reply

I love the idea of a stocked salad bar in the kitchen. That sounds like the ultimate luxury!!
We have a pebble ice machine at work and everyone loves it! It’s funny to hear people scooping the ice when they arrive in the morning.
On average I run about 30-35 miles a week. When I’m training for a HM I might run 40+
I love being outside! I’m running outside 3-4x a week the other days (2) I go to the gym to run on the TM and lift weights. When the weather is really nice it just makes me happy. When the weather isn’t that great (hot, cold, windy, etc.) it just reminds me that I can do hard things. Extra bonus when I see deer during my early Sunday morning runs. I feel like it’s good luck!
Love your bright pink nails!! I getting my nails done this weekend and I’m going to look for something bright and springy :)

Reply

Oh I love that you guys have the pebble ice machine at your work, I would be there first thing in the morning too ha! I love your favorite things about running outside and I totally agree. YES, go for the bright colors, they make me so happy and I did my toes the same color too! Thanks Elizabeth and enjoy your Tuesday!

Why did that make me laugh so hard that the miles to run chart has Elite vs. Mortal? I was expecting it to say “Average Runner” – Mortal make me giggle! I think I am right on target for that “mortal” category though for my half!
Dream Kitchen – double ovens because I cook a LOT! A big butcher-block island, hanging space for my pots and pans over said island, a gigantic sub-zero fridge, lots of counter and cabinet storage space… clearly I have big dreams!
Funny you ask about working out outside – it’s supposed to be in the 40s in the afternoons here, so I actually decided to run after work this week instead of in the mornings. It’s dark and about 20 degrees or less in the AM, so I’d rather switch my schedule up and take advantage of the sunshine and slightly nicer weather by running in the evenings this week and maybe next! It was also really nice to sleep in until 6:30 this morning instead of my usual 5:15!

Reply

HAHA I totally laughed when I saw that too! I hope you get that dream kitchen because of all of the cooking you do! I am so glad you got to sleep in and that you get to run outside this afternoon… ENJOY RHIANNON!

OH my goodness…the time change was so rough for me too. Literally felt like I lost 4 hours not 1. And somehow today is just as hard as yesterday. I have yet to adjust;)

I love how supportive Andrew is for your three hour marathon goal.. my goal for this year is a 2 hour half and having friends around me supporting me makes it so much more do-able.

I have yet to train for a marathon, but 5k, 10k, and half I do 25 a week for most of those. Its just what I like to keep consistently. Of course for a half my long run changes but my weekly doesn’t change much because thats what my body likes!

My Tuesday tangent is this long awesome quote I read yesterday-> “When you walk, one foot is always on the ground. When you run, most of the time you are actually airborne. For example: a 6-foot-tall runner with feet about 1 foot long was found to take 1,250 steps while running 8-minute miles. Thus, while covering 1 mile—5,280 feet—he was in touch with the ground for 1,250 feet and airborne for 4,030 feet. Put another way, he was in the air for 76% of the time. So don’t think of it as a 10-mile run. Think of it as 7 miles of flying.” -Paul Richardson

Legit. We be flying. ;)

Have a great day!

Reply

YES… I totally agree, it felt like a four hour change! I am supporting you for your goal too and cheering you on from Utah, please keep me updated with all of your training… I am so excited for you to nail this goal! Eleanor, that quote is SOOOOO COOL!! I am going to have to share this… thank you so much and I hope you are having a beautiful day!

I need that frywall pronto for my husband! My dream kitchen would have a coffee bar complete with an espresso machine that could make me fancy coffee drinks. Bonus would be if it came with a personal barista! I usually run 3-4 times a week outside. I just do not like the treadmill and gym. Fresh air just makes me feel calmer and happier. Especially if I can get run that is not in the dark. I need VITAMIN D! For the last year I have been running 15-20 mile per week and only doing an occasional 5K. I am kind of itching for a half marathon this spring. Usually that training bumps me up to about 30 miles per week.

Reply

Oh that would be an amazing kitchen… I hope you get at least some of that someday;) I totally agree with what you said about fresh air! Let me know what half marathon you choose for this spring, I’ll be cheering you on! Thanks Corrinne!

Reply

I think I usually land around 30 miles. Someday that will be more when I have more time to work on it. When I was in high school I was running between 80-90 miles a week.

In my dream kitchen a double oven is a must! And the Costco doors look really handy to me.

Reply

80-90 miles a week in high school…. WOW!!! I can’t imagine. And 30 is amazing right now with everything you have going on! I hope you get that double oven someday. Thanks girl!

Reply

This time change has really been hard! I also went home to CA this weekend so coming back to CO was not easy!

I run way fewer miles than that postcard, but I usually only run 3 days a week on average. I ONLY run outside, except when the ground is icy.
Looking forward to hearing about your sub 3 training! Have you picked a marathon yet?

Reply

Oh that would make it EXTRA hard, I’ll think about you when I’m complaining about the time change ha. I’m so glad you are outside for your running. AHHHH good question… so my dream would be to do it at Boston next year but I don’t currently have a BQ time and I’m not sure I could get one (wanna come back from having a baby smart) before sign-ups this year. I also don’t know how my body with breastfeeding is going to do with a fall marathon… I have a few on my brain right now = St. George, CIM, Phoenix or Mt Charleston. I’ll make my coach decide ha. Thanks Emma and I hope you have a great day!

Hi Janae,

I think the #1 issue with breaking 3 and achieving that goal is the mindset. If you think about it, it’s roughly 7min miles.. If you do MP (Marathon Pace) training down at 6:30s or so, then it’s really just an issue of having “that time” in your head. Train, relax, and trust your body. You train. You’ll hit it.

I posted my training for the NYC Marathon this past year, when I ran 2:47. I have only run two marathons: NYCM in ’16 and ’17; my NYCM in ’16 was 2:55, but I got injured on Queensboro and was literally crawling the rest of the way (it was so frustrating). In both cases, my primary training was 2 workouts and 1 slow LR. My workouts were all tempos and bi-weekly Canova-Ks. My LR were usually ~19-20mi+, but the latter miles were always super slow. My longest tempos were 11.6mi at MP (6:30 or so). I would mix short and long tempo each week; short at HMP and faster (6:15-5:45), while long at MP.

It took weeks and weeks to build up to the longer MP workouts (anything longer than 10mi), but again– time and training. Come race day, past mile 11, you’re (or I was) out of training territory. Still, you gotta believe and go with the crowd. If you do do NYC this fall, you’ll nail it– it feels more like crowdsurfing than running, and NYRR volunteers take good care of you (fluid stations, gels, etc, very regular and nice!).

#1 Don’t let the time get in your head– go after it, train and run your pace >:). You’ll nail it!!

Best wishes!

So can I just hire you to give me pep talks whenever I need them, I can’t thank you enough for your comment today and I am screenshotting it so I can keep it:) You are absolutely amazing and I LOVE hearing about your training and races… can you PLEASE BLOG (or do you have an IG I can follow)? Thank you so much, I really appreciate you taking the time to share this with me. Thank you!

Hahaha, I’m all about the pep talk— it’s too easy to be self-defeating!!

I did blog at one time, but it was mostly just about boring math and my goodness it takes a lot of work! That said I have my training for this past NYCM on my website.. I could email it to you!

Anyway, as is said in Chinese: “加油!Jia You!” (“Add oil!” It’s used to cheer people on!!) :p love it!!

EMAIL IT TO ME PLEASE!!!!!! [email protected]

5k/10k – normal mileage is fine, just add fartleks/hill repeats; Half marathon: 25-35 miles/week; Marathon: 30-42 miles/week.

I am outside, running/walking/yard work, usually 5-6 days a week. It keeps me sane – calmer, happier, more patient. And if you count having all the curtains open all the time for maximum sun, that’s 12 hours a day, every day of sun and mountain views.

Is chicken your favourite thing ever on salads or…?

Having a new puppy is like having a newborn. I can’t take my eyes off of him for 2 seconds, he cries and wants to be held 24/7. Thankfully he is stinking cute!

I’ve never really trained specifically for a 5 or 10k, I usually plan them into my half or full training plans and I would say I’m fairly close to the chart for weekly mileage. I pushed it a little with my last full training cycle and my ankle was extremely unhappy.

I completely agree on a pebble ice maker :) We opted for double ovens in this house and I’m so glad we did because we use the heck out of it!

I am pretty much outside most days. I live in SoCal, so the treadmill isn’t really a necessity unless I’m alone and it’s dark. My whole day just feels so much better when I can get outside!

Reply

You should totally make your bacon in the oven. 400 degrees on a cookie sheet for 15-20 minites depending on how you like it, with sides to catch the grease. I use a big sheet of parchment paper too. When the grease hardens ai just throw the paper away. Easy clean up. You will never go back to frying it.

:) Christina

I can’t believe you still fry bacon in a pan. Cooking it in the oven is soooooo much better!

That candy drawer would definitely go into my dream kitchen.

My mileage is anywhere from 65km – 100 km plus depending on the week – so about 30 mile plus to over 60 miles a week. I am training for an ultra marathon so everything is going in cycles

Almost all my runs are outdoors – though spring allergies are kicking in…so we will see.

Have a great day!

my dream kitchen would have double ovens, double lazy susans, and a microwave that’s not sitting on the counter. also, the dishwasher would work. what my dream kitchen doesn’t have is poop brown ovens and poop brown 2 x 2 tiled counters…….which my current kitchen has. it’s absolutely hideous. i am not responsible for it; it came with the house.

happy birthday to andrew! i hope he enjoyed his many celebrations.

Just getting caught up on your life. I haven’t watched The Bachelor yet and I am 3 episodes behind on This Is Us, but your blog comes first. This should show you how much I have missed you ;)

Those purple bags of deliciousness never last more then 48hrs in our house. It’s a problem.

I would switch up the candy I had in that drawer, but the idea itself is brilliant.

I would exercise out in nature every day if I could. The hike we went on in St Kitts got be all sorts of gitty for the hiking season that is almost here!
