A Few More Things About the Accident + Searching!

Wow.  I am absolutely overwhelmed with the love and concern that all of you showed us yesterday.  Thank you  a million! It is pretty much the best to have internet friends from all over the place that love and support us (and I’m always here when you need that love and support too)!  Your comments meant a lot to us and my gratitude levels are at an all time high right now.  I had a few more thoughts from the crash that I have been thinking about:

*I totally should have mentioned this yesterday but EVERYONE involved in the accident (the people that hit us and the car in front of us) were all completely fine.  Very lucky.

*Southwest is the best.  Andrew was supposed to get home well after midnight but he told Southwest what had happened and they switched his flight to an earlier one and to a direct flight for free (he was supposed to have a layover in AZ).  He got home to us much earlier.

*I seriously do not even remember hitting my head.  I just have the nice bumps on my head to prove it but isn’t that strange how you can’t even remember something that happens so fast like that.  My brain went straight into PROTECT YOUR BABY mode.

*Thank you to the nice man in the hospital parking lot that installed Skye’s new carseat for us.  My head was killing me and some nice man spent 20+ minutes going through each step in the instruction manual and making sure it was all put in perfectly for us.  People are the best.

*My neck and back were a bit sore yesterday but better than expected.  I have an appointment to see Dr. Bennett (my chiropractor) to get everything looked at.

*Physically I feel pretty great but I don’t feel super great mentally as far as driving goes.  I don’t want to drive for a long time.

*I am so grateful that Brooke and Knox weren’t in the car too.  They don’t have the big car seat that Skye does, they have boosters, and it just freaks me out.

*I can’t even begin to imagine what it would be like to be involved in a high speed accident or on the freeway or something.  So scary.

Thanks again everyone for all that you said!

Let’s talk about Saturday now.  All three of us slept in and took the morning extremely easy.  I didn’t run because it just didn’t seem like a good idea and I traded in a weekend run for time in bed because that is just what we needed.

Skye needed it too!

My dad was really wanting to see us so we met up with them for lunch.  My dad has always been so worried about us when it comes to driving… hence why he drove 100 hours with EACH of us (5 kids) before we got our licenses.  He made sure we were in very safe cars (I was the 16 year old driving around a Crown Victoria) and we were never allowed to go under 1/4 tank of gas (so we wouldn’t run out of gas somewhere random).

I think if he could, he would buy me a tank to drive around in (and now I really want one).  It was so nice to just hang out with them at the table and talk about everything.  Skye napped and we don’t have the older two so we really got to chat.

IMG 9271

Kneader’s has all of their desserts out on display for you to see perfectly while you are standing in line.  This chocolate mouse treat sold me the second I saw it.

IMG 9272

From there we went out on a walk.  The clouds make it look cold but it was 50 degrees and really nice out.

IMG 9275

We walked over by the river for a little bit too.

IMG 9302

From there we decided to go check out some different types of cars.  I definitely want something bigger than my last car (I had a Honda CRV and it was a pain to fit all three kids in the back) so I think we will go with something that has two benches in the back.

IMG 9314

I get a rental car tomorrow and then we are going to search for a month (we are fine having just one car after the rental is done) or so to find something that really works for us.  I want to feel really good about our decision before doing anything.

IMG 9317

Finally, our home has some food.  It had been way too long since our last Costco trip.  Our Costco delivers now and I told Andrew we should try it and he was pretty offended I would even think of doing that.  It’s his favorite part of the week/month… how could I try to take that away from him;)

Also, don’t go to Costco the night before the Super Bowl.  It was nuts but we got out of there in 17 minutes total.

IMG 9325

And the sweetest Candice brought us over these amazing cookies!

IMG 9326

Brooke is having an amazing time in California driving around in her Jeep!

IMG 9270

And Andrew is off to pick her up and bring her back today!  I’ll go hang out at my parents’ house until they get home!

HONDA ODYSSEY!! I loved my odyssey!! With 2 kids the mini van is the way to go. Having an SUV with the 2 benches is super hard. The last row is so tiny and tight.
Glad everyone is great!!

Agree! It’s just about the most amazing party bus ever. Heated seats after a run? Yes please. Sunroof? Of course. Power doors? Heavenly.

I have three kids and had an older Honda minivan and just upgraded to the 2018. The middle row captain seats ADJUST so that whoever is in the third row can easily get back there without having to walk between the two seats. This is IDEAL with an infant car seat and two boosters. I love it! You just gotta get over driving a mini van. The auto doors are also awesome!

So glad you’re okay!!! Hope you heal up quickly (your neck & head <3 ) I was just going to suggest the chiro since that seems to work so well for us when we need a "tune up" but I'm glad you already have one! Hopefully, you find a car that works well for your family! I hope you have a great Sunday! XO

I am excited for the special episode of This is Us at the end of the superbowl! So glad you are both well. Also glad you are turning this into a positive thing by looking for a new car that will be better for the entire family.

So glad you’re both are.okay. Your parents truly are awesome!! They are both so sweet!!

Janae, this is the first I’m seeing about your accident. I’m so thankful you both (and everyone else) are ok! Very scary and it’s always worse afterwards when you think about how bad it could have been. Thank goodness for seat belts and car seats and well-built cars!
When my kids were little, I had a Toyota Sienna that I still have! It’s a 2004 and has 234,000 miles on it. My mechanic thinks I can keep it until at least 300,000 miles! I don’t know what kind of “kid-friendly” cars are out there now, but the Sienna was awesome for me. Lots of space and very reliable. Now it’s my Albus-mobile (that’s my dog, who is a Bernese Mountain dog and at 115 pounds, needs a lot of space!)
Again, so thankful everyone is safe. Take it easy until you start feeling less achy!

So sorry to hear about your accident, glad you and baby Skye are okay! Life is precious and people are good! Love to you and your family.

So glad everyone is okay, Janae! Yes, I was in a pretty bad accident several years ago where I flipped my car and basically crawled out the window. By the grace of someone up above, I was okay and only left with a bruised head and some cuts on my leg. Your body definitely feels sore for awhile though…there is something strange that happens internally I think when we go through things like this. You WILL gain back all of your confidence and MORE with driving. I remember it took me a little while..but forcing myself a bit and knowing that keeping focus would help.

Probably won’t watch much of the Super Bowl…well..maybe the commercials :o)

So sorry you had to experience that yesterday! Car accidents are so awful and feel terrible. You must be emotionally exhausted :( but thank God everyone is ok. I’ve been in several car accidents in my short 31 years but the worst was when I was 8 weeks pregnant. Another (ironically – also pregnant) woman pulled out into 5 lanes of traffic and hit me nearly head on. I was so scared I was going to lose my pregnancy. The sheer terror of that day still gives me chills. Both of our SUVs were totaled but we were both fortunate in that the babies were ok. After that I felt the same way you did, terrified to drive and determined to find the safest possible vehicle to fit our family. We ended up buying a Nissian Xterra (another SUV) which we love. We researched car seats and parked out front of the baby store to have them test fit different car seats in our car. And while most of our friends and family think we are overly cautious, we have kept our now toddler still rear facing (thanks to New convertible car seats that are suited to rear face longer). … I hope you get some well needed rest today and feel better soon ;)

Happy to hear there are no ill effects from the car accident, sometimes it is the next day before you really feel it! Smart decision not to run – it may have hurt you more than it would have helped at that point. Monday you can use the run to “work” it all out.
I am from Canada and had an accident driving through Salt Lake City on Christmas Day almost 10 years ago. Everyone was ok in our case as well, thank goodness, and I have to say, all involved were very nice and helpful, including your police who responded. The other driver actually told them we saved his life by “allowing him” to hit us and stop his spinning out of control. And I have had a few others as well, none that I was hurt in and none that were my fault actually. Driving is scary for awhile afterwards, but I would encourage you to make some short drives right away, and let the fear pass! Take care. You have a beautiful family!

I am so sorry you experienced this but so glad everyone is ok. You must have been so scared. It is great you have so much support close by and could lean on your parents while Andrew was away. Take care of yourself and do not rush back into activity too quickly. Hitting your head and a potential brain injury (no matter how small) can affect people so differently. My mother got into a fender bender when I was 3 and it didn’t seem like much at the time but she has had post-concussive symptoms ever since. Take care of yourself and your little family.
Lots of love from eastern Ontario <3

So glad that you are all ok! Go for a bigger Honda! They are such reliable vehicles. I was in a car accident in California on vacation when I was 12. Both my parents were in the hospital. It was scary! Thankfully everyone recovered and the employees at the hospital were so kind to me and my younger sister.
Unrelated, but I saw on your Instagram that Andrea Barber follows you. How cool is that! How about a guest post / Q&A etc?
Hope you are back to running soon!

So glad everyone involved is safe! How scary.
I am beyond excited for the Super Bowl!!!! I am an NFL super fan (I’ve been to 15 of the 31 stadiums so dar) and this year my team is playing!! I’m a nervous wreck (pretty ridiculous, I know). Then I will follow up the game with This Is Us. My husband has some Xanax on hand because I’m not sure I can handle all of the emotions. FLY EAGLES FLY!!!
Honda Pilots are a good option if you’re trying to avoid the minivan thing.

What about a nice big german car? ;-) Janae, I really understand your fear of driving now. I HATE driving with my little girl because I just freak out when I see cars who drive dangerously (or when my husband goes too fast…we have no speed limits on the most highways in Germany…).
I am SO SORRY that you had to make this experience! You shoudn’t have to.
Now take your time, rest and enjoy the company of your family!

So glad everyone is ok!!! My Facebook memory from today was sitting in the hospital for 4 hours getting fetal monitoring done after I got rear ended while 36 weeks pregnant with my 3rd. It was a minor hit and my car was basically untouched while his front bumper got mangled (score for the Honda Odyssey!) and I only got a tiny bit of whiplash. But I knew I would stress about it all night long if I didn’t get the baby checked out. Everything was fine and outside of some annoying insurance issues, it all worked out ok. As for cars, we have both a Honda Odyssey and a Chevy Traverse (with captains seats in the 2nd row). We do a LOT of roadtripping and nothing beats the odyssey for storage room. Seriously. The only car with as much trunk space is a Suburban. Plus kids being able to climb in by themselves and having automatic sliding doors so kids don’t hit parked cars on our sides are amazing features. And I clearly found the accident protection was great. We live in Colorado where snow driving is an issue, but consumer reports did a study on whether 4-wheel/AWD was better than snow tires…and snow tires won all the categories (stopping in ice, traction in a turn, etc) except for something like starting on an icy incline. After that, we went and got real snow tires for both our cars and have never had any issues in winter driving and I few totally safe without AWD. Anyway, I like our Traverse for mountain and ski driving, when we need higher clearance and that AWD for icy inclines, and it still fits everyone (4 kids) but it can’t match the convenience of our odyssey.

You have such a beautiful family and I’m so happy you are all safe. I it’s reminder that life can change in an instant. I was in a scary car accident once when I stop for a train but the car behind me did not. It pushed my car forward – thankfully not on the tracks. They flew past and hit a telephone pole, but they’re back and was too close to the tracks. I had nightmares about it for a long time and anxiety for quite a while every time I came to a railroad crossing, especially that one. My advice is to get back in the car and drive next week when you’re feeling calm – get back in the saddle so to say. Get the bigger car if you can! It will be easier and you will feel safer.
On a sidenote, my chiropractor in Illinois is name is Dr. Bennett too!

That is so scary! It’s amazing how life can change in just a moment. I’m so glad you two are okay!

I also have a CRV. It works super well for me- no kids- but I totally get what you’re saying. Three kids would be tough in it! ;) The Pilot is roomier, and still has the reliability of the Honda brand. Though, I don’t disagree with the tank idea…

And, yeah I have been in an accident. Not something I talk about much. But, I was 16. I still really don’t know what happened, but I blacked out and ran a red light. Thankfully everyone involved is okay, but it’s definitely something that stays with you.

Oh my gosh, that’s what I get for being busy yesterday and reading your blog! I am SO sorry. I can’t even imagine how scary that was – so, so, so thankful that you and Skye are okay! Prayers for healing (mentally and physically) headed your way, lady! Hugs.

Glad you both are ok!!

I was involved in a multi-car crash on an expressway last year – one car clipped a dump truck and went spinning into another car which then hit another car that spun out and then a whole pile of us had no where to go and drove into each other. Luckily I had time to react and put my head back so I was totally fine – but my car wasn’t. I hit someone and two people hit me – all that equaled no more car for me. It was definitely scary and I’m glad that my kid wasn’t in the car. Of course all of this happened while we were in the process of buying a new home/selling ours so car shopping had to happen really quickly.

haha this is the one time I will sit down to watch Football – although it is mostly to make sure I tune into This is Us tonight

I am so, so glad that you both were okay! It can be so scary. I was living in dallas and the highways are pretty fast there; one evening I was driving on the highway and the rush hour traffic began. As I was slowing down a guy rear-ended me (I was going around 20mph and he was going over 70mph). It was so scary but somehow we both were fine. It took months for me to drive at rush hour on that highway!

Also, go pats ;) have a great sunday!

I LOVE LOVE my Honda Pilot! Love it! I highly recommend it (and mines an older one so I can’t even imagine what a newer one would be like!)

We are going for the Eagles in our house. Basically we are just really tired of the patriots and all their crap. Lol but let’s be honest, I’m mostly there for the food.

I’m so glad you all are ok! As a mom, I totally get how even if you are hurt nothing will stop you from making sure your little one is safe. Take it easy the next few days and let your body heal. So grateful you have an amazing support system. I guess the sIlver lining is you can get a little bigger car.

I’ve been in a couple accidents. Ironically both involving a city bus (I was a passenger both times). The worst was getting rear ended by a city bus at a red light. The paramedics were so nice and good looking ?

Enjoy the rest of you weekend!

So relieved you and Skye are doing alright! That sounds like it was a scary incident. I wanted to share with you that the word ‘accident’ is being phased out in favor of ‘crash’ as most of what we call accidents could have been prevented (if the driver behind you hadn’t been speeding, for instance). Stay well! https://www.crashnotaccident.com

So glad you’re ok and glad you took it easy today. Such a scary thing to happen. We’re in completely the wrong time zone for the super bowl here in the U.K. but my other half is a huge American football fan so he stays up really late. He always has hot dogs on super bowl night, half at dinner time and half at about 3.30am! But now we have a little one who is really excited about it too, we have to have hot dogs at 5pm ?

The exact same thing happened to me when I was 14 weeks pregnant – people really need to put their phones down. I cried for what felt like hours but my son was fine in there! We drive a GMC Acadia that barely got a scratch on it. Also it has a third row – we looked into a Ford Explorer but prefer the 2nd row have Captains chairs for easier access to the back row. Glad y’all are safe.

So so glad you are all okay!! Car accidents are very traumatizing and when you walk away okay from it, you realize what a miracle that is and feel so grateful. We were in a very bad act accident this summer at high speed with our kids in the back. I know angels just had to have protected us all because it still doesn’t make sense how we all walked away just fine with no major injury. I was also pregnant with a lot of impact to my stomach and baby girl should be joining our family in a few weeks. Definitely a miracle! So glad sweet Skye was okay. Hope you are feeling recovered.
By the way, we REALLY love our Honda Odyssey. I never thought I could love a van so much, but I don’t know I would do small kids without it. I was so bummed our van wasn’t completely totaled in the accident but luckily we got another one just like it.

Oh my goodness, Janae—so thankful you and Skye (and everyone involved) are alright!!! I just caught up on your post yesterday after I saw your Instagram post. So scary!! But also so thankful for people like the man in the parking lot and your friend Candice who have such big hearts. My friend and I were driving somewhere yesterday and were at a light, and a woman in a wheelchair at the corner of the intersection fell out of her wheelchair, and multiple people immediately put their cars in park to get out and help her. You’re right about people being the best.

Hope y’all are all able to relax and rest today and enjoy the Super Bowl! Love you, sweet friend!!

So sorry to hear about your day but glad everyone is ok, which is most important! Good for you for taking the next few days slowly. Thinking of you and your sweet family!

Go Eagles! My hubby has been a philly fan forever even though we’re from CA. We are much more into baseball but excited that our team is there nonetheless.

Yes, been in an accident just over 4 years ago. Probably close to same scenario as you I was on a highway that has stop lights in the country. I came to a complete stop and the large SUV behind me never hit his breaks. So he hit me going about 60 mph. That slammed me into a kuckenbecker tractor work truck with one of those steel bumpers. My air bags did go off, but like you I think I blacked out because I don’t remember hitting it. Just waking up to the smoke that comes out. I didn’t know that airbags use gun powder so I though the car was on fire. Thankfully I was driving a Jeep Garnd Cherokee and it held up so well. I couldn’t imagine that scenario in a little car. I was just made because I had just laid it off 2 mi the prior, so that was crappy. I had 2 boys (not with me) in booster seats at the time and would have definitely went back to the Jeep but wanted something with a 3rd row. In now have a Dodge Durango and I love it. It has the 3rd row and seats 7. I highly recommend it.

PS glad ya’ll are ok and that fear of driving thing is normal and lasts for a while. I still quickly check my mirrors every time and am very cautious when I have to hit my breaks suddenly.

Reply

We just bought a Chevrolet traverse in November (the 2018 version, which I swore I’d never do– buy a brand new car but it’s the only one big enough to fit 3rd row and a double stroller in the trunk) and we LOVE it!!! Incredible safety, it has 2nd row captains chairs which makes it really easy to access the 3rd row. We’re due with baby #4 in June so this was important. It sits 7 comfortably, good gas mileage, drives great and still looks stylish. Not yet ready for a minivan ? it’s also easy to park which was incredibly important as we live right outside of DC (the only other 3rd row SUV with enough trunk space for a double BOB was a suburban or extended length expedition and the price, gas mileage and parking were definite NOs for me.

I’ve been in a few car accidents but the worst was in high school when my HS by rear ended a stopped car in front of us going 40mph. The seat belt malfunctioned and didn’t ‘click’ so at impact I kept going forward and hit my head on the console. No air bags went off either. Dislocated a lot (pelvis and public bones, 2 ribs and some internal bleeding) and 8 years later still have back issues but thankfully everyone was ok.

Reply

So glad you’re okay! I’ve been in a couple of car accidents – the worst was when I was 14. We were broadsided and I wasn’t wearing a seat belt. My skull left quite an indentation on the window and I required about 50 stitches. I didn’t get my driver’s license until I was 19 because I was so afraid of driving. I also can’t imagine not wearing a seat belt now.

We rented a Buick Enclave once and loved it – it’s seats 7.

Reply

I’m so glad everyone is ok! As a fellow mom of 3, I highly recommend the Sienna! It’s also available in AWD (a must for us living near mountains where it snows) – I think it’s the only mini van with the option for AWD. The automatic sliding doors and lift gate are life-changing.

When adrenaline hits, your body numbs itself to the pain to stay calm–it’s an evolutionary perspective on the instincts of human survival :) And the care you showed towards Skye further proves this.

Now, off to eat my own salad after seeing how delicious yours look! I’m jealous.

I was in a car accident in 2008, which totalled my vehicle, which I had some back pain (but running helps with that!). Then just before Thanksgiving a deer hit my vehicle. Thankfully, I was able to drive the car after that accident, but it was totalled out as well. I wasn’t injured. I decided to buy a Honda CRV and I love it! I live in the country and it is perfect for the Midwest winters. I highly recommend Honda – maybe go for a Pilot. I wouldn’t recommend you run at all until you see your chiropractor. It is okay to take time off until you get the approval from the doctor (and yes, chiropractors are doctors!). Have a fanstatic ending to your weekend!

I’m excited for This Is Us after the Super Bowl.

I’m so glad to hear that everyone involved in the collision is alright. Thankfully I’ve only ever been in fender benders – rear ended a few times and then a friend backed into my car as we were leaving to go to another friend’s wedding.

Seriously so so glad nobody at all was badly hurt. Such a miracle.
I was in an accident my freshman year of college that should have been really bad (involved deer in the middle of the canyon road, hitting black ice and skidding backward across all lanes of the freeway while trying…and failing…to not hit the deer and barely avoiding rolling the car by 1/4 of an inch of the wheels bending..that’s what they told me anyway). I totally understand the not wanting to drive for a long time feeling. I had major anxiety every time I had to go through that canyon for a good year (if not more!) after that.
I am sick and have TONS of homework to do today (I try to avoid homework on Sundays but it’s just not happening this week), so I’ll be having the game on in the background and I bought myself some black bean salsa and chips as my Superbowl snack :)
I hope you’re able to rest up and yay for Brooke coming home today! PS, she seriously looks 13 all of a sudden. She’s getting SO old!

I had a crv for 11 years and I LOVED it, but we also had a baby last year and 3 kids in the same row is a pain haha. We upgraded to a Town and Country Minivan and I LOVE it so very much. Automatic sliding doors (no more worrying about dinging cars), automatic back door from the keychain (the best for groceries), tv for long drives, air conditioning all over the back, room for their legs, stow and go seats, I could go on and on. I know you live in snow and have heard the toyota sienna is (or can be) all wheel drive. If we could’ve afforded it I would’ve gone with the Sienna or the Odyssey, but they weren’t in our budget.

I have an interesting “accident”- when I was younger we were visiting Utah (staying in the dorms at BYU) and my parents decided to go drop off a letter to my cousin at the MTC. My mom went in and while we were waiting my dad decided to drive around the parking lot. Well, there was a chain across a section of the parking lot and my dad didn’t see it and drove into it/over it. I was in the front seat and didn’t have my seat belt on (because we were driving slowly in the parking lot and I was just up there while we were waiting for my mom). My head smashed into the windshield and made a huge spiderweb in the front windshield. Two missionaries saw it and came over to help. I was the only one hurt but thankfully it wasn’t bad, just a really bad headache. Who would’ve thought the MTC could be dangerous LOL. Lesson learned- never take your seatbelt off.

Reply

Oh and I’m glad everyone is ok, I forgot to say that :). I totally understand the mom instinct, it’s amazing.

I forgot to mention that I’ve heard from so many people/friends that they didn’t want a minivan but once you drive it you just can’t get over the convenience of it and they end up loving it. Maybe you could rent it while you are without a car to see if it’s something you like. Can you tell I’m now team minivan? Haha. I know people like Honda Pilots but they don’t really have a lot of trunk/storage space with the 3rd row up. If you don’t want to go the minivan route I’ve heard good things about suburbans and Yukon xl (dream car for when my kids are bigger).

Thanks for the follow up on your blog today, glad you both are doing good! I have to comment on the Costco delivery, Andrew, they deliver! THEY DELIVER! You don’t have to leave the house to grocery shop! It’s perfect! :)

I think if you can park a Crow Vic you are pretty much set up for life as a driver-plus noone wants to park next to it and the big doors (depending on what year, of course).

So glad you are feeling better!

I didn’t like two bench seats when my kids were little. I preferred one bench and two buckets. I cant’ remember why though but I think it felt less boxed in and it was easier access.

No super bowl watching-it will show around midnight or later here. My daughter is having a few of her friends over and my son went to a friends house (to watch, we’ll see if they stay up the whole game).

Reply

So glad you are ok! I also have a CRV which should be ok for our family of 4 but I cannot imagine 3 car seats in the back! If it turns out the air bags should have deployed will you post about it? I am terrified that all these safety features are not going to work when I need them….

Reply

Hey Irene!! I totally will! I LOVED my CRV so much… I’m going to miss it!! I hope you have a beautiful rest of your day!

So glad you are o.k.! I was rear-ended about 3 years ago…My girls were 8 and 10 at the time, and fortunately other than a sore neck on my part, none of us were hurt. Once the initial shock wore off I had to laugh a little, because my girls were watching Harry Potter at the time, and our travel DVD player was knocked out of position at the moment of impact. After a “Woah, what happened?” my youngest asked if she could start the movie back up about 10 seconds after the crash. Kids are nothing if not resilient! I will say it took me several weeks to feel comfortable driving after that…Any time someone was too close to my bumper, my pulse would go sky high. It gets better with time, like most things in life!

Reply

Janae, I’m so glad everyone is OK and that your Mama instincts were able to kick in and get you out of there safely. I’m sure it was a huge relief to have your Mom there too!

And I was rear ended at fairly high speed on the freeway and it took a while for that pit in the stomach feeling to go away. Give yourself lots of grace right now and know that it will take some time. Maybe some short drives around the neighborhood without the kids could help break you in.

Reply

More blessings! Everyone’s ok!!

Challenge: get back on the horse. There is nothing you can do about a rear-end collision except clamp down on the brakes and pad the steering wheel. Thinking about your drivers ed teaching days (for better or worse) weren’t there more good teenage drivers than bad? I bet Google has some good insights for prepping at stops.

Love the crumble message from Candice! Way to rock the Costco trip!! I check out Consumer Reports too, BUT, consider the sample groups. If they didn’t sample a certain vehicle – I don’t know, like Subaru in the class you’re shopping – the article won’t show the results you desire.

Reply

I saw a few other people mention it so thought I’d also add that we LOVE our odyssey. My 17 year d self would die that I just said that, but the convenience is pretty great and it’s a really nice car to drive. So for what it’s worth, this random stranger highly recommends checking it out if you are considering a van!

But I also wanted to say I am so very jealous of wherever you live in Utah (maybe the whole state is that gorgeous though??). Your pictures just have the best views!! It looks like the most gorgeous place to run, or just be outside in general.

Glad you are both feeling well and crossing my fingers you don’t get sore! Happy car shopping!

I can’t imagine how scary that must have been, I’m so glad you’re both okay. I have only been in very minor accidents, never any injuries. The worst was when we were up at the Grand Canyon for a wedding and we got hit by a tourist from Italy, driving a rental car that he didn’t have insurance for. He spoke very little English, so it was hard to communicate with him, he just wanted us to call Hertz. We had no cell phone service, and we didn’t think to try and flag down a ranger, and without a “police report” the car rental company said we were 50% responsible. The guy hit us when we were in a parking spot, we weren’t moving, and the angle he hit us tore off my front bumper and grill. So while no one was hurt, the experience was AWFUL because of the people from Hertz. It was a fight to get it taken care of.

Anyway, we have been looking at Toyota Highlanders. I really want one with captain’s seats in the second row to make it easier to get into the back row. I’ve had a Pilot for 10 years and it has been awesome but I’m ready to trade it and its issues in for something newer. The list of what we want to look at keeps growing though. This will be a well-researched purchase.

Oh, I just saw the comment about someone flipping over! Ok, now I’m reminded of Brendon Burchard – he’s YouTubeable. So, he was in a very serious flip over in another country. One takeaway he speaks about is the three questions he asks himself every night:

Did I live?
Did I love?
Did I matter? ( I think this one is right.)

Janae, so sorry about your experience, but gladly everyone is ok. I recently traded my beloved CR-V for a Pilot and I love it. A smother ride and lots more room!

So glad you and Skye are ok! I don’t remember being in one – but I was told I was in a car accident when I was a kid.

Today I went trail running with friends in the morning – we got soaked but the post run coffee was great.

Neither my partner and I are huge super bowl fans but we might watch part of the half time show…

Enjoy your Sunday:)

I’m so glad to hear that you continue to feel good today. I think it was a smart move to skip your run and get some rest. How nice was Southwest to get Andrew back home so quickly!

So glad you’re ok! And it’s heartwarming to hear about the man that helped install the car seat.

Give yourself plenty of time to heal mentally and emotionally. After I was in the accident with my newborn, I kept waking up at night just terrified by how close we had come to a tragedy. And every time I was stopped behind another car, it felt really vulnerable. It definitely fades over time.

We love our Subaru Outback. It pretty much folded in half, and still kept my baby perfectly safe!

I have a Ford Explorer with captain’s chairs instead of a bench and it is so much easier to get the kids in and out. Third rows are a waste if you have car seats because it’s a pain to fold them down but captain’s chairs totally solve that problem!

So glad that you’re both okay!!

I’m really excited for This Is Us!! And I’m excited for chips and guac :)

My husband (boyfriend then) we’re rear ended at a stop light in his ‘67 Mustang when I was 17 :( He car was donezo! I was super stiff and sore for about a month. He ended up with a Honda Civic that was pretty much his baby and thank goodness for no accidents or tickets since!

You would never regret a minivan! When my husband and I were dating we vowed to never get two things — a cat or a minivan. We are 1 for 2 in keeping those promises, haha. We’ve had our Odyssey for about 4 years and I love it more than ever. Definitely a time when I’m okay with eating my words. ;)

So glad you and Skye are both okay!

I’m so so glad you’re all ok!! Car accidents are super scary and can shake you up for a while. I feel the same about boosters so I recently invested in some convertible seats that go up to 80lbs. They are Maxicosi from amazon. So comfy and easy to clean ( no rethreading) My kids were less than thrilled because they want to be in boosters but it’s just not worth it!! Just like you said, things can change so fast. Again, so glad you are all safe❤ take time to recover. You are so loved!!

Hi Janae,
I was so sorry to hear about your accident. So scary and so relieved you are all ok. Hug your kids and take it easy! There is plenty of time to get back on the horse with everything.
I was in 2 scary accidents and 1 near miss in my late teens more than 2 decades ago. One of the times, I was driving and skidded on a puddle and veered into the other lane so it was a head on collision. We were fortunately not going fast, but the air-bag deployed and I was very shaken up. One week later, my brother was driving us to my grandparents for thanksgiving. We did a 720 on the high way in the snow, but didn’t hit anything by some miracle. Needless to say, I was terrified to drive in bad weather and am apprehensive to this day. So I drive very cautiously in bad weather.
The last scary one, a friend of mine was driving us from Vail to the Denver airport. We hit some ice and flipped over and landed on the roof. Again, by some miracle, no one was hurt.
But it is hard and very normal to feel nervous about driving again. Just take your time!
And BTW, my parents were the same way about cars. My dad always wanted us in very big cars. Now I drive a mini-van. It’s so easy with 3 kids and has so much room. I don’t love vans, but they are certainly big and safe. We have the Toyota Sienna and love it.
Good luck with everything! Thinking of yoU!

I was in a pretty bad accident a couple of years ago and was so thankful my kids weren’t in the car. Buttt I’ve now become mildly obsessed with car safety for kids. Some great info about car seats and booster seats!

I’m just getting caught up on the blog! Wow, this timing is uncanny. My husband was just in an accident last Wednesday–not his fault either. He had a green light, and a young girl made a left hand turn in front of him. To get a text at 6:30 am that says “I was in an accident. My car is totaled. I”m okay” made my heart fall to the ground. Thank God he was okay—like you though, quite sore for a few days. His dad is a retired teacher, so that reallllly helped us to find a replacement vehicle at a good price over the weekend. He’s always wanted a station wagon, and I finally came around to it, too (bigger! safer!) so he got a Subaru Outback.
The same thing had happened to us when Caroline was about 3 months old–a man made a left in front of us and totaled our car. I know that scary scary scary feeling of having an infant in a car accident. You totally go into mama bear overdrive at the time, and then looking back, it’s all a blur. I’m so so so glad you are all okay. Car accidents are incredibly scary and kind of stick with you after a while mentally, too.

AND, GOOD NEWS! PHILLY WON THE SUPER BOWL!!!!!! WOOT! I’m a bit of a bandwagon Eagles fan right now, but I live an hour outside of Philly, and I love the city of Philadelphia. I am so happy for the die-hard fans. They deserve this. :)

I am so glad everyone is ok! I drive a Ford Explorer and I love it! Here is why – the driver door unlocks and the back will open if you just have your key with you. You don’t have to get it all the way out and unlock the door which is critical with kids. It also has a key pad on the drive door so if someone needs to drop something off or carseats needs to be switched, you can do it without having your key! It does seat 7 as well but has a lot of room in the back with the seats folded down. That’s my 2 cents! Have a great day!

Glad that you are both okay!!

I’ve been in three “fender benders” but I’ve always been the one that has been hit not the one that has done the hitting. The first one was many years ago and the lady it me so hard that her car was latched onto mine. She then became annoyed with me that I wouldn’t just let bygones be bygones and not call the police. Ummm…ma’am your car is STUCK to mine! Then two years ago, I could tell that I was going to get hit. The stoplight had turned red and I was breaking but the kid behind me (I could tell in my rearview mirror) was NOT slowing down. Thankfully it wasn’t too bad; damage was minimal. A Driver’s Ed lesson learned long ago, you should always be able to see the tires of the car in front of you touching the road then (more than likely) you will not hit the person in front of you if you get hit from behind. Even now when I’m at a stop light and the person behind me looks like they are practically IN MY BACKSEAT, all I can think of is “if YOU get hit, you are going to hit ME!”

With regard to that most recent accident, I was on my way out of town for a half marathon! I almost missed the packet pick up time frame because of all of it. I was able to do the race the next morning thankfully.

We didn’t watch the Super Bowl. I’m superstitious and really wanted the Eagles to win which meant I couldn’t watch the game. We did tune in to see the Halftime which – in my opinion – was average at best. I work in the Sports and Entertainment business so I’m probably a little more difficult to please but there was no “WOW” factor. Wish they had chosen a different song for the Prince tribute. Again, it was “okay” but it was no Lady Gaga or Bruno Mars halftime show. :)

That sounds awful! So glad you all are OK! Life sure can throw curve balls our way, but also has a funny way of showing us the important things in life.. In not so ideal ways sometimes..! :p

I don’t have children but Toyota Forerunners are great cars – large and super safe. :)

My husband works for a car insurance company and has regular access to crash-test videos from manufacturers. He will not let me drive ANYTHING except a Subaru or Volvo after watching them…

Hi Janae – I am so sorry you and Skye were in a car accident. So scary! Glad there were no serious injuries. As I was learning about car seat safety, I stumbled on a group called Car Seats for the Littles. They have a website with tons of information car seats – reviews, lists of recommended seats, etc. And Facebook group where you can ask specific questions about your car seat questions or post pics to get feedback on your installation. But, the reason I want to alert you to it is because I have learned so much about the limitations many vehicles have when it comes to needing to install multiple car seats. Things I never knew about…lack of tether anchors, overlapping seatbelts…all kinds of things that make it difficult or impossible to get upwards of two car seats properly installed in a vehicle Here is their article about shopping for a vehicle. Might alert you to some features to explore as you’re evaluating options. https://csftl.org/choosing-new-vehicle/

Good luck!

So glad you guys are okay!!! I was in an accident 34 weeks preggo! Everyone was okay thank goodness. I was rear-ended at a RED stoplight by a cargo van and hit the car in front of me who hit the car in front of them. Scariest moment of my life. I called 911 sobbing to the operator. I had to be monitored at the hospital for 4 hours. I am so thankful I was alone in the car. Our two older girls starting sitting in their booster seats in the 3rd row to practice for when the baby came. When I saw my car the next day I realized how lucky we all were because my girls could have seriously been injured!
