My 2018 Running Goals and something AMAZING for your running!

Good morning!  I am super excited to talk about a watch that we have recently fallen in love with!  It does SO much more than any other watch I’ve ever used!  Andrew has been running with it and I have taken it on some walks.  I am so excited to use it next month when I am running again!  This post is sponsored by HUAWEI!!

———————————————————————————

In about a month I’ll be good to go to start running again (after my OBGYN appointment:)!  I’m enjoying this break from running and love having this special time with my family but I’m sure over the next few weeks my excitement for running again will increase!  Just because I’m not currently running, doesn’t mean I haven’t set a bunch of running goals for 2018.  I wanted to share a few of them today!

*To visit the track 2 times a month (once I am training for races)!  A lot of my training this next year will be on the treadmill (SKYE:) but I will have the chance to get out and get in some great runs too.  The track scares me.  I know that if I am going to the track I am going to hurt and have to push myself out of my comfort zone which is why I want to make this a goal.  The hard stuff is what makes us stronger.  I can’t wait to work towards getting stronger.

*Before I start racing 1/2 marathons or marathons, I really want to race some 5ks.  My goal is to race at least four 5ks this year (which is approximately four more than I normally do) and to go below 19:30 for my time!

*To not let Instagram, social media, etc affect how I feel about my accomplishments with my running.  To go along with this goal, I want to avoid comparing myself to what my times used to be.  It is so easy to compare ourselves to others around us and what we used to run.  Ever been proud of something you have done only to get on IG and see that someone else did it faster and then feel bad about your accomplishment?  Join me in this goal, focus on the baby steps you are making with your training and celebrate those accomplishments along the way!  I want 2018 to be about focusing on where I am now and the steps I am making in this stage of life to get faster and stronger!

*To hydrate, fuel and train in a way that will allow me to continue to breastfeed!

*To beat Andrew in our race;)  As you may remember, we have a race against each other in about 10 months.  The kids told Andrew I am faster than him so he came up with the idea to race each other.  I’ve got to train hard to not let him beat me at the half mile, mile and 3 miles.  We are both taking this quite seriously!

*To get working with a coach again as soon as I start getting a few miles under my belt.  Having a coach helps me to stay motivated, keeps me injury free and helps me to train smart and fast!

*Sub 1:30 in the half-marathon at the end of the summer.  The half marathon is my true love and in August I want to race the half and run under 1:30!  PS some of these goals might adjust a bit when I see how my running is going after having a baby but I definitely think I can do this one!

*A marathon in October (ST. GEORGE) to run just for fun (no time goals).  I want to remind my body how to run a marathon again and then to start training for a PR marathon in April 2019.  So training for that race will start next December!

*Most importantly, to run happy as much as possible.  To remember that I GET to run, to take time to feel gratitude during each run, to run with friends and to love the process of getting in running shape again rather than focusing on how hard it is going to be after having a baby!

Those are my current goals for this next year and I would love it if you would share your goals in the comments!  We can keep each other accountable to them!

Today, I also want to share something that I am going to use to help me reach these goals of mine!  I read about the Huawei watches and heard great reviews about them in the past but had never tried one until now!  It felt like it was Christmas morning for both Andrew and I when it arrived at our house because we were so excited to try it out!

LRG DSC01613

The HUAWEI Watch 2 is a premier smartwatch for runners!  I have tried out watches over the years that were both used as a gps for running and a smartwatch but among the many things that are so different about this watch that I love, the HUAWEI Watch 2 (4G Supported Version) makes it so you can leave your phone AT HOME while still staying connected!  You can leave your phone at home, go out for a run and still get notifications/texts/phone calls/listen to your music all from your watch!  This watch is able to do this thanks to independent mobile connectivity and a built in GPS chip.  I love being able to stay connected to everything without carrying your phone around with you too!

LRG DSC01620 2

I’ve been taking it out on a few walks.  It is sure making me excited to take it for my runs soon, both on the treadmill and outside!

Andrew has been taking the HUAWEI Watch 2 out for his runs lately.  Something he loves about it is the heart rate monitor that is built into the watch!  Along with the heart rate monitor, there are other built-in sensors that collect your data including distance, speed, steps, heart rate range, calories, route and more.  The HUAWEI Watch 2 is a touchscreen watch (along with two buttons on the side) which I was pretty nervous about because I haven’t had great experiences in the past with touchscreen watches. This touchscreen was so completely different than anything I’ve tried.  It feels like you are using a phone screen.  It is SO easy to get to where you need to go by just touching/swiping the screen lightly.   This is one of my favorite features because it makes navigating around to the different things I want to see on my watch SO easy and quick.

DSC01988

Let’s talk about the aesthetics and feel of the HUAWEI Watch 2 for a second!  It is incredibly light ( lighter than my other watches), especially for everything that this watch can do!  The watchband is very comfortable, soft against your skin, flexible and it’s easy to switch to different bands if you want to change colors etc.  The watch has a classical wristwatch design yet it is really comfortable and fits perfectly to use on a run.  The watch is water resistant, has a ceramic bezel, allows you to choose from so many great watch faces (below are a few of them) and sleek!

The display on the watch is actually really bright and easy to see (my pictures don’t do it justice) out in the sunlight which is so important as a runner.  We want to see our stats easily!  The HUAWEI Watch 2 also gives you real time guidance during your runs with notifications on your distance and target/goal completion!

IMG 4414 2

This watch pretty much records everything which I LOVE—>  everything from your daily steps, the time taken for medium to high intensity exercise and detects the number of times you stand up after long sedentary periods.  I am a numbers person so it is really fun for me to see the stats on everything throughout the day!

Below are some photos of a FEW of the many things that this watch allows you to do… it does everything from texting (you can voice text back), GPS, Strava, Runtastic, your VO2 Max, phone calls, music, goals, training effect, alarms, maps, etc.  I keep finding more things that I love!

One of my absolute favorite things about the HUAWEI Watch 2 is the fact that you can play music from your watch without needing your phone to do it!  You use the Google Play Music app to download songs, stream music and access your playlists without touching your phone!  You can go out for a run without your phone and listen to your favorite playlists from your phone either through bluetooth headphones or through the speaker on the watch.  The sound is very clear and it can play pretty loud too!  I was expecting a fuzzy sound but nope, it was perfect.  The same goes for phone calls.  It is so easy to hear the person calling you and for them to hear you too!

DSC01982

I’m beyond excited for 2018 and to start training again!  Now, let’s all just plan a race where we can meet so we can hang out in real life.  I’ll bring the candy.

Ok, that watch is gorgeous! I totally want one! Maybe Santa can bring me one?

For 2018, I want to run a race with my hubby/friends! I’ve never done this — I usually run solo, but I’d love to make it a group thing!

I don’t have any new running gear, but I did try out some new running socks — does that count? They were AMAZING!

Reply

I hope Santa brings you one, it is amazing! Running with a group is the absolute best. I am excited for your 2018! What socks were they… I want some!

First of all, you look AMAZING!! And I love your goals, especially the one about not comparing yourself to others. I ran my first race in more than a year over the weekend, and it was ugly. I felt really slow and out of shape, which I am right now. It’s tough not to want to compare how we did to how others did, but I had to remind myself that I had a lot going on this year with my kidneys and everything else, and it’s going to take a while to get back where I want to be. So my goal for 2018 is to continue training hard, run more races, and run a half marathon PR in the fall. I know it will be challenging, but I am going to push hard to make it happen!

Reply

Thank you so much Natalie! You got out for your first race this year… way to go! Good job on reminding yourself that your body has been through SO MUCH this year… it’s amazing that you are out running again!! Love your goals and I can’t wait to see you rock them!

Ok, I was expecting that watch to be way more expensive than it is!
I actually don’t love my garmin or my apple watch. Maybe it’s time to sell those and upgrade.
Running goals: healthy running! I had some great (for me) times this past year, but I was hurting alllllllllllllll the time. Turns out I had some big problems with my back and hip. I’m working to get those fixed, but it doesn’t look like a *fast* Boston is going to happen. So I’m focusing on getting healthy, running Boston for fun and setting my sights on a big PR in Chicago!
You’re going to do so well with your goals! And it’s so smart to wait. I did not wait after baby, and here we are! : )

Reply

Mollie… I expected it to be way more than it is too! Yeah, I definitely did not like running with my apple watch either, it was always SO off on distance and pace. I am so glad that you are getting your back and hip figured out (pain there sounds awful)! Can’t wait for your PR in Chicago! Thanks so much and I hope your day is a beautiful one!

Reply

Hey Janae! I’m curious why you felt the Apple Watch was not accurate. What were you comparing it with? I use mine daily and I love it and have always thought it was pretty accurate. Now I’m wondering if I’m wrong….

Reply

Hey Lindsay!! So I have the very first generation of the Apple Watch! I’ve heard the newer ones are much more accurate but with mine the mileage was way off. Places that I knew were a mile away were not on my apple watch.. it would say .8 miles or something like that and that would also change my pace because it was off on the distance if that makes sense! I took it to a track one time too and it was off on each quarter mile lap. It might have just been mine or the first generation Apple Watches (I haven’t tried any of the other ones)! Take yours to a track to see if it is measuring pretty accurately! Thanks girl and I hope you are having a great night!

Reply

Ok, good to know. Thanks, Janae! Merry Christmas!

Reply

Okay, I LOVE that watch! How awesome that it can do so much?! I am really wanting to upgrade to a good watch next year for sure, I’ll have to add this one to my list for sure! :)

One of my main two running goals for next year are to run my 2nd full marathon and then to get a 2:00 PR in the half!

I can’t run without my phone because it tracks my run, has music and for safety!

As of lately I’m 100% a road runner. But, I’d like to get back to the track too! I’ll probably be heading indoors to the treadmill too really soon!

Reply

Yes, add it… it is amazing! I LOVE your goals Chelsea and I can’t wait to see you reach them! Join me in a track goal this year! I hope your Wednesday is a great one!

Reply

Wow! Just yesterday I was hiking with a friend and we discussed exactly what you said about comparing your times to what they used to be. I am now 51 and have to realize that I have peaked already in my running and need to come up with new goals. I won’t lie, it is very hard not comparing myself to my younger self but I have to embrace aging and get over that. So that is my big goal for next year running/racing.

Reply

It really is so hard to not compare ourselves to what we used to do but I’m just working on focusing on each season in life and loving what I can do in that season. Let’s both work on this together this next year:) You are amazing Holli and now you have me wanting to go for a hike!

Reply

I have added in strength and stretching this fall because every time I would run as long or as fast as I would like (aka out of the comfort zone) I would end up with some niggle somewhere. I am excited to add in some speed and distance to see if the body will withstand it.

Reply

I am excited for you too Erica, I think the strength and stretching will make a huge difference in how your body feels! I’ll join you mmkay?! Wish we could do it together though! Enjoy your day!!

Goal for 2018 is to BQ!

I really thought that watch would be much more expensive than what it sells for! I just bought a Garmin 230 after my Forerunner 310XT went kaput, so unfortunately I don’t need a new watch now. But my Coach really wants me to stop running with a phone (I use it for music) and I had been looking for a running watch that had music playing capability. Alas, I will have to wait a bit. Anyone have a recommendation for a running MP3 player that’s lightweight (NOT the Apple Shuffle)?

Reply

AHHHH Kim… I love your goal and I am cheering you on! So excited for your 2018 and a BQ:) Right, I thought it was going to be way more pricey too! I don’t have a MP3 player recommendation but does anyone else?!?! Enjoy your day Kim!

Goals: Listen to my body, STAY HEALTHY, enjoy running, and hopefully run my 2nd full marathon next fall.

It’s weird, but I just feel off if I’m running without my sunglasses on!!! Oddly enough, my favorite pair is my Oakley Commits, which I’ve worn for a few years now after YOU recommended them on your blog! :) Love them!!!

Zero percent of my runs are on treadmills. Okay, maybe 2%. I think I ran on a TM one time in the past year because it was storming crazily outside. Most of my runs are on the road; I wish more were on the trail, but we just don’t have a lot of trails around here. I think soft trails would be beautiful AND good on the body!!!!! I’ve been on and off injured so much that I haven’t been on the track much lately. I’d much rather do speed on the track than on the road though.

Have a great Wednesday, Janae!!!! :)

Reply

Oh I am going to copy you and add ‘listen to my body’… thanks for that. SO important! Oh the Commits… I miss those so much! Mine are broken… I’m just like you and if the sun is out, my sunglasses are on! Oh I wish that more of my runs were on the trails too! Thank you and I hope your Wednesday is a great one too Jen!

My 1018 running goal is to do a 10k it two. For as long as I’ve been running you’d think I’d have done one but I haven’t. 5k is my comfort zone and it’s time to step out of that a little bit.

I also want to do more track runs but we will just see how that one plays out. That gets kind of tricky with high schoolers schedule.

Reply

I will come do the 10k with you. Seriously! You’ve got this!

Reply

It’s a plan! I gotta find one now lol

Reply

Hey Janae! That watch looks super great, and I’m in need of an upgrade! How is the gps accuracy? Did you or Andrew happen to do a comparison with a garmin or other watch? All the features sound so cool, and I’m so surprised by the price!

I love all your goals, I definitely will be borrowing a few of those to add to my list :) I hope you have a wonderful day with your kiddos!

Reply

Hey Stephanie!!! Andrew took out his garmin and and this watch out one day and by the end of the five miles they were off from each other by .06! When we run together with our Garmins in the past they are also about that much off from one another. Also, when using Strava it is pretty much right on compared to the same route we have done on strava previously! Seriously for the price and everything you get (I was expecting it to be way more expensive), it is amazing!

Running goals – run two half marathons, two 10ks, and two 5ks. I’m already signed up for one half in November in Mexico, so I just need to find another one to do in the spring/summer. There’s usually a lot of smaller races around me so I need to find ones to do for my 10ks and 5ks! And honestly, my main goal is to just keep running and most importantly, keep finding the JOY in running.
Running gear – I tried to find a stocking hat that I could wear while running in colder weather – my head is just too big or round or something. I’ll stick to my earbands instead.
Cannot run without my phone – for music (sometimes) and tracking, but also for safety or just in case something happens and I can’t run anymore. It’s just not worth the risk for me.

Reply

LOVE your goals Rhiannon! So excited for your half in Mexico! I love what you said about finding the joy in running… that is the most important thing we can do! Yeah, I definitely stick to headbands/earbands more than hats because my head is huge! I hope your day is a great one:)

Reply

I love your goals and will take my cue from one of yours. Despite having two high schools w/in a mile of my house, I run absolutely ZERO runs on the track. I wouldn’t even know where to begin/what to do. I like your idea and will attempt to incorporate more track work into my runs. My larger goal is to run not one, but two marathons, this year. I am in the middle of training for the Napa Valley Marathon in early March and last week I found out I was accepted into the lottery for Chicago in October. I’ve only run one marathon/per year but I think these two are far enough apart to allow me to not over train and get injured. I am really good about cross training and strength work and will just continue to listen to my body and work on “pre-hab” to thwart off any potential rehab.

Reply

I will totally post some track workouts this next year in case you want to get out to one of those hs tracks by you! TWO MARATHONS… you’ve got this! I want to run Napa one year, I hear it is BEAUTIFUL! Congrats on Chicago, that is awesome! I’m so excited for your year Rosie!

Reply

I’m totally joining you in the comparison goal! I have some pretty big goals and one that is super scary (let’s see if I actually sign up for said race…) and I know that not comparing myself will be the best thing for that goal.

That watch sounds awesome! When you start running again (or have Andrew do it now), can you compare to the Garmin and Suunto (I think that’s the name of it at least…) watches? I know the latter aren’t smart watches but I’m curious how they compare in terms of activity tracking and what not.

Have a great day Janae :)

Reply

Andrew took out his garmin and this watch one day for a five mile run and they were off from each other by .06 by the end! When using strava on the watch it was pretty much right on with previous runs on the same course! I will definitely compare it with the Suunto once I’m running again! Sign up for that race! You are going to rock it Maureen! I hope your Wednesday is great!

2018 goals:
1) Stay Healthy and Run Consistently!
2) Race a new distance (TBD – I will decide in May 2018, after completing my next half marathon!)
3) Work on improving my 5k, half marathon, and 10k times – PR/PBs would be lovely, but I will be thrilled to keep making progress

I decided against the Apple Watch, since I need a new faucet in my house and I decided to replace the sink at the same time. I moved into the house in April and this my first stage of kitchen renovation/redesign. I am going to have to check out this watch, because it looks pretty neat!

Happy Wednesday!

Reply

Margaret, I love your goals so much! 2018 is going to be amazing for you and I can’t wait to hear what race distance you decide on! I want to see the before and after pics of your kitchen! So exciting! Enjoy your day!

Reply

Main goal is to stay injury free! Okay, so I really don’t want you and Andrew to race. I just don’t think it’s a good idea for anyone – the kids, etc. It can seem like a fun thing for everyone and then get pretty annoying if one of the kids harps on it too much or if the one who doesn’t win gets even a little perturbed – joking or not. I just really don’t want anything minor to make you two upset! I feel really strongly about this for some reason! Please don’t race :) Okay, that is my nervous-nelly input (unsolicitied!). Hee.

Reply

Amanda!!!! Girl, you are the best! I am a total worrier too so don’t you worry about that.. I do the same thing! Thank you for caring about us, that means a lot to me! I hope your Wednesday is a beautiful one!

Thank you :)

I love all of your goals, especially not comparing yourself to what used to be! Hope you guys have a merry christmas :)

My running goals for 2018 are to beat my marathon PR and to fuel and rest properly so I won’t get injured as much!!
I recently got some new insulated winter running tights. They’re warm and they stay up… but they’re definitely not the cutest/best fitting leggings in my drawer!!
This time of year I am all about my gloves and headband! I need them to get myself out the door/into the cold for my runs.
I run probably 20% on the treadmill, and I honestly haven’t been to a track in YEARS. I probably should do that….

Reply

LOVE your goals! Which marathon are you looking to do this year? I am so excited for you! During the winter I would much rather be warm than cute while running ha… enjoy those tights! Let’s both get out to the track more haha! Enjoy your day Kerri!

Reply

I’m running Boston with my hospital’s charity team, and I’m also plying with the idea of running either Toronto or NYC in the fall!! And so agree that warm >cute right now. We’ve already got snow on the ground in Boston!!!

Reply

Oh that is so awesome!! Keep me updated on everything and no slipping!!

Reply

2018 will be a big year for me…I just signed up for my first marathon in the fall! So, that’s a biggie, but I’m also hoping to PR in the half marathon this spring :)

My most recent running gear that I’ve tried is a timex ironman! After feeling like I was getting WAY too focused on my running pace, I decided to go old school and just run by time with a basic stopwatch, and it’s been the best thing. I’m planning to use it for at least a couple races next year and see how I do running by feel!

Reply

AHHH NOELLE!! I am so so so excited for your 2018! Which marathon? I am so glad that you have found the perfect watch for you and your training, that is the best! Keep me updated on your training!

Reply

Twin Cities Marathon (which is local for me)! I’ve raced all the other marathon weekend races in years past (10k, 5k, 10 mile) so the course will be super familiar, for better or worse ;)

Reply

Oh I love it!! That is so exciting Noelle! I love knowing the course of a marathon before I go into it so hopefully that is great for you too!

Reply

The not comparing goal is a goal for me too. One of the friends I run with once a week used to be as fast/slow as I am, but now we have the same app I can see the runs he runs alone are at a lot faster pace than when we run together. Even though I know our bodies and circumstances (and age) are different, I still find it hard to see those fast paces. So my goal for 2018 is only compete whith myself. I’m thinking about running my first half marathon, but it scares me too. Otherwise, just stick with 10k’s and be happy than I can run, stay healthy and happy. I’m loving the gloves and hat (with ponytail hole) I bought a couple of weeks ago. Last Sunday it had frozen just a bit, so we ran over a path through the meadows to avoid the slippery road. It was lovely, grass cracking beneath our feet. On trail/path about once a month or less I think. And this past summer I ran on the track for 10 weeks. I would love to do that again next summer.

Reply

Do you still wear the Suunto from last month? Or will this new one replace that for training? I loved the look of that one and liked that it had the heart rate option over my current Garmin model.

Reply

I am sure I’ll use the Suunto for runs randomly too but I love the smartwatch part of this watch so much that I will be using the HUAWEI for the majority of my runs! I hope you have a great day Bethany!

Reply

Okay now I want this watch! Here are some goals for 2018:
1. Buy this watch! :)
2. Run a PR half marathon. I have my eyes on one in March so any specific half training plans you love, I’d love to hear!
3. Read more about running – I want to know more about things that will help me in my running and I also want to read things to keep me motivated.
4. Be more consistent. While I’m consistent overall in my running (not taking more than a week off), I’m not consistent from day to day. I started teaching this year and it has been a struggle staying motivated to run after school each day. My goal is to get over the “I’m too tired” excuse and just get out there. Packing clothes to change into and driving to a specific location after school will help a ton. If I say I’m going to run at home, I tend to put the pajamas on instead of the running clothes.
5. Hydrate more. Another problem with teaching is that I don’t get to use the bathroom whenever I want which has led me to not drinking as much water as I should.
6. Be more diligent about my workouts. Having a goal race helps me focus on what kind of workouts I should be doing, rather than just running to get the miles in.
Sorry for the long comment! Goals just kept coming into my head! Thanks for all of your goals to help me brainstorm mine.

Reply

Love your goals and I can’t wait to read about your speedy races!
I am way intimidated by the track as well…last time I ran a track workout was back in August. And I can still remember how much it hurt.
I would love to run a 10K PR this year!
I find it so hard to stop comparing my current times to old ones. Like of course I’m not going to be running the same times I was in high school, that was 10 years ago!

Reply

You look great!

I love the idea of a watch that allows me to leave my phone at home while staying connected. And people keep telling me that heart rate training is the best, so maybe this would actually allow me to try that out ;)

I try to run on the track once a week. Like you, I know it will hurt, but I always leave feeling stronger and faster.

Running Goals: Run faster, Actually incorporate strength training

Reply

I’m so excited that you are planning on running St. George!! The hubs and I decided that will be our next marathon just yesterday :) I BQ’d at CIM but not enough to get actually get in so I’m working on taking 3-4 minutes off of my time and I think St. George will be the perfect place to do it!

Running goals for 2018: Stretch & strength training! To run with a local running group at least once a week! A track workout 2x’s per month.

My hubby got me the Fenix 5 for my bday/Christmas gift this year and gave it to me right before CIM. I’m loving the wrist heart rate monitor and it has definitely helped me in recovery this training cycle.

I have to have a rubberband when I run. I could skip music/watch, but I can’t run with my hair all over the place.

Right now, everything is pretty much on the roads. I’m not training for anything specifically yet, so a few miles outside has been just perfect :)

Reply

AHHHHH Let’s meet in St. George! I am SO so excited! Huge congrats Marissa on your BQ, that is awesome! I love your goals and I am so like you… my hair has to be up and out of my face. Enjoy the rest of your day!

i really like all your running goals. i want to say i have similar goals (except the times)!

I would love to hear your running goals for 2018! Please share.. let’s cheer each other on!
– to run a 5K in less than 25 min, hopefully sub 24 min.
– to run a 10K in less than 1 hr, hopefully 51 min.
– to run a half in less than 2 hrs, hopefully 1:50.
– to do more strength work (which i know i should)
– consistent 20+ mileage weeks, hopefully getting to 30 mileage weeks.
– to go harder at the track and in my tempo runs. i tend to hold back at both.

What was the last piece of running gear that you tried out? What were your thoughts about it?
new running tights from EMS! i love them so much i got a 2nd pair.

What is something that you ABSOLUTELY CAN NOT run without?!
um my mizuno wave riders? i would probably say that’s first and everything else is secondary or well, that’s good enough.

What percentage (just take a guess) of your runs are on the track? Outside on the roads? On the treadmill? On the trails?
runs or mileage? hm. 90% are on the roads, 5% on track, 5% on trail. i did run on the treadmill the other day, first time this year! post-cortisone shot.

That watch looks amazing!
I was just going over my 2018 goals! I want to get a PR on my 1/2
Run a 50k (I already signed up for Smith Rock 50k eeek)
get a Marathon PR
Its going to be a big year! My husband is actually a personal running coach :)
He has helped me so much, I wasn’t a runner a year ago and within a year I finished my first marathon!

You look absolutely amazing!

Reply

That watch looks awesome and way less expensive than I thought it would be! The last piece of running gear I tried out were my wireless headphones. Such a game changer. Love em. I haven’t really set my running goals for this next year yet. But I know I want to continue to add strength training. I’m so bad about this and the older I get the more I know I NEED to in order to stave off injury. I’d like to try to do another full marathon. It’s been a few years. Had some setbacks that kept me from doing one. Oh and definitely want to keep eating healthy. Been on a good streak for the last two months. Hard around the holidays but I’m doing it!

I love hearing about other people’s goals for 2018. I’m hoping you’ll be successful at reaching all of yours.
I’m one of those people who needs water during my workout. I think it’s more of a mental thing, but if I don’t have it, or I forget my water bottle, my workout is just blah.

me too, it’s great reading everyone’s goals! it’s very inspiring

hope you reach more for that water! i’m lucky in that we have water fountains available everywhere where we live.

Congratulations on Skye! She is beautiful and so happy for you and your family.
My running goals are try to do a half and also do a 5k race with my oldest daughter. She loves running. Other goal find a new running shoe. I have been a die hard Pure Flow fan for years, but suddenly they are bothering my ankles. Any suggestions to a Brooks that I may want to try? (Nothing bulky or heavy I like to feel the road)
Thanks!!

OH NO about your ankles!! So I have always been in love with the Pure Flows but I need more support the older I get (I still wear them on speed days though) but I LOVE THE LAUNCH! I used to wear the PFs 100% of the time and the switch to the Launch was perfect for me. I love your goals… that is so great your oldest daughter loves running and that you are going to do a 5k together! Keep me updated on everything!

Your watch review is awesome and I’m shocked at the reasonable price, so fantastic! I thought you just started using the Suunto not too long ago though, can you provide some insight into why you switched, or how you would compare the two watches? Thanks so much for the great information you provide!

Once I am in training I am going to do a full comparison between the two watches! I switched when I read and watched the movies about HUAWEI. It looked so cool, I had to try it! Thanks Robin and I hope the rest of your week is a great one!

First, let me say, I love your goal to run happy. That’s what it’s all about! My current running goal is to choose a 10k and get registered.

I haven’t tried any new running gear in quite a while.

I absolutely cannot run without my Brooks Adrenaline shoes or a good running bra. If I’m running indoors, I must have music!

I prefer to run on the parkway trail. During bad weather (including the nasty inversion), I run on an indoor track. My least favorite option is the treadmill.

Good luck on all of your goals!

My 2018 goal is to keep on running! I’m due at the end of May, so I’m just hoping to keep my running fitness along with other workouts as long as possible! I’m also trying to get more strength training in. I used to always incorporate it when I ran in a gym, but now that most of my runs are outside, I hardly get in any strength training. And when I do, I’m always so sore after, which makes it hard to go back! This is my first pregnancy, so I have NO IDEA what to expect on how I’ll be for before and after the baby. The no comparison goal, will definitely be hard to avoid! I also think it’ll be soo hard to not go out for a run after the baby since that’s when the weather gets so nice! But I will be sure to get in lots of walks (with approval) until then!
Things I can’t run without… Shoes and a hair tie!

Running isn’t going to be a huge priority for me in 2018 but here are the goals I do have:
-Do races with the stroller for fun. I’m not going for PRs but I’ve missed doing races because I enjoy them. I’m so excited to do them with Chase, so we might as well start early. Do you have any advice for running with a stroller?
-Run the BolderBoulder with my dad in less than an hour. This is kind of an ambitious goal for me postbaby but it’s my dad’s goal and it’d be so special to do it with him.

That watch looks awesome and way less expensive than I thought. I just got the Garmin Fenix 5 for my 40th bday gift so I won’t be changing for a while. Haha. I commented on your IG post this morning quick, but I just had a chance to read your blog post. I also want to work on my 5k’s in 2018. I’ve gotten the exact same time (21:54) the last two times racing so it is time to break that, right? That along with the fact that my 10-year-old daughter On my heels and less than a minute off my PR. The time is coming where this mom will get beat soon. By the way, you look really great, and your family is just the cutest!

Hi Janae,

Do you feel this watch has a large face, and is it “girly” enough? It kind of looks like a men’s watch but I could be way off.

Coming of tearing my hamstring 1.5 yrs ago (yikes) then fracturing both ankles last winter I am finally back to jogging a bit. My mantra will be “listen to my body” esp. my ankles and hamstring!

Congrats on Skye! I am so happy for your gorgeous family!!!!

Hey Tammy!! So the face is actually a bit smaller than my other two watches and all of my watches (besides the suunto) in the past have been black and looked like they could be worn my men and women so maybe I’m not the best to ask:) I think it looks sporty! Keep listening to that body of yours and I hope that you don’t have any more injuries!! Thanks Tammy!

An April Race? Are you aiming for Boston again?!???

This year, I’m going to enter the nyc marathon lotto again. Fingers crossed.
I have a triathlon schedule for the spring. I want to beat my time from last year and MAYBE my husband too. But that’s pretty unlikely.

I do a few runs on the track, but I like to push it and do speed work when I am on the treadmill. Most of my runs are on roads and the board walk but I did a trail race last year and it was very fun!

I wish!! I won’t have a qualifying time for Boston in time for sign ups:( But I have a different one that I have my eye on! AHHHH GOOD LUCK on the NYC marathon lotto… I hope you get in! I am so excited for your triathlon. Keep me updated on everything!

Oh what a cool watch!!! My running goal for 2018 is to be more consistent. I find myself running for a few months and then abandoning it in favor of other workouts (probably because of the wet and cold PNW fall/winter). But this year I’d like to be more consistent and ultimately run a half marathon!

great goals Janae!! Can’t wait to follow along and watch you accomplish them all:)

my 2018 running goals are not set in stone yet. I focused more on cross-training this year (I love orange theory classes) and I plan to still do a bit of that, but running is my true love and I’m a firm believer in sticking with what makes your heart happy;) I have a couple 15ks planned in early 2018 with time goals in mind for those. And to improve my 5k time! I would love to see me hit at least one sub-7 mile in the 5k :) :) :) I’ll be running my 7th half marathon in January so maybe I could aim to get to my 10th half by the end of the year??! Or maybe it’s time to try the full…..

also. that watch. super affordable. what’s wrong with it? jk, but honestly what does the Garmin offer (what I have now) that this one lacks?

You have some great goals!!!! Mine is a 50K this year. Let’s hope I survive. :) Your family looks perfect!

I’ve read a couple of your blogs over the years, but on seeing the title I just had to read on…

You see I’m coming back from a knee op, and after 6 weeks on crutches I have start my comeback.

With my first run planned for Feb 1 I have also set goals for 2018, and long term goals for 2020!

Like you it’s 5km is first up and I’ll be running a lot of them not real races, but Park Runs… and then a marathon at the end of the year.

So you are looking for a coach, and in years gone by I would have wondered why as if you’ve been trained before you can just go back to an old program and adjust it! But now I know not every athlete can help themselves. So yes a coach will help, and a bit of fitness will help. My tip to you is: before you meet your new coach for the first time (even if it is on email) run a TT off 3-10km any distance will do, as a coach I always like to know what an athlete can do when starting. Know how much time you have to train. Know where you can train (your treadmill, and the track). You have your goals, which is good. Then don’t be afraid to ask question about ‘problems’ that can arise… also find out if you can contact them if you have to change a session…

Good Luck, and I might just pop in from time to time to read about your progress

That watch looks awesome, i need to check it out!

I love your list of goals, especially the social media one. I too am still coming back from having a baby, I did a 5k with my baby at 2 months and it was no where near my ideal time and that is ok because i got to run with him! But then of course I get on FB or Instagram and see other who ran the same race bragging about times, some even with their baby as well and it just crushes you. I am looking forward to this fall for 2 big half marathons, one of which i ran last year while pregnant and didn’t even know :) I would love to PR on it but just being able to run it again and have all those wonderful thoughts about how he was in my belly last time I’m sure will be rewarding enough! Who knows, i may even run with him :)

Good luck on your goals, I know you will crush them!

Thanks for sharing your goals. I like hearing what others are doing. I really want to run a marathon in late fall of 2018. It’s been since 2011 Pre – kids that I’ve done any marathons and I’m wanting to try one again. I hope my body can handle it and I can work it out around the kids.

My biggest running goal for 2018 is to have fun running again. I got burnt out last year trying to balance it with grad school and a lot of other junk I was going through that it became kind of a chore. I didn’t train properly and had a terrible Chicago marathon experience, albeit humorous in hindsight. I also want to get down to around a 4 hour marathon so I will need to get into training.

I’m not really into watches and gear like that because I find it makes running less fun for me. But I did by myself a running journal for 2018 so if that counts as gear I’m really looking forward to trying it out.

I should run on the track more, I run 0% there right now. 90% of my runs are outside on the road with 5% on trails and 5% on the treadmill. I run so little on the treadmill because I hate it but I love trails. I really need to find some good ones out here, I have been here for a year and a half so the just moving here excuse doesn’t really apply anymore. I guess I’m adding finding some good running trails to my 2018 running resolutions.
