I was REALLY tempted to…

Brooke left last night to be with her dad (we switch off every month between us taking her to California and him coming to Utah) for a few days and we are already missing her!

I was very tempted to go on a run yesterday.  Big time.  For me personally, I know that I really need to take this time off seriously.  With Brooke I started running quickly and my body clearly wasn’t fully recovered after having her yet and for years I had some pain because I didn’t wait.  I want to avoid that pain this time around.  Even though my body FEELS fine after having Skye and ready to go… that doesn’t actually mean that it is ready to run.  This same thing happens to me after a marathon.  After taking a few days off from running after a race I feel recovered and ready to run again but I still take more time off just because I know that my body needs more time to fully recover.  Sometimes our brains tell us we feel great and ready to go but I’d rather play it safe and avoid jumping back in too fast!  Running will be there for me when my body has recovered!

Instead of running, I jumped on the treadmill for a 2 mile walk.  It felt good to move and to have a few minutes just to myself!

Andrew brought me some entertainment during my walk:)

The kids wanted to go outside yesterday morning to play in the snow.  No one slipped which is a miracle and they got some of their own running in!  Judging by how small their snow pants were from last year (we need to buy new ones for this winter), the kids have each grown a foot in the last 365 days (slight exaggeration but still I cannot believe how much they have grown).

IMG 5264

Knox was pretty bummed that there wasn’t enough snow to make a proper snow angel.

IMG 5266

My lunch consisted of another salad mix from Costco, a sweet potato (with bbq sauce of course) and leftover cold lasagna.  Not a random combination at all:)

IMG 5268

Andrew’s day consisted of a lot of studying.  He has a huge test on Friday so wish him luck!

IMG 5300 2

My day consisted of a lot of this.

IMG 5275

The kid’s day consisted of a lot of this (their made up rules for this game sounded a lot more fun than the real rules)!

IMG 5294

Brooke loves to play with Skye’s feet while Skye is eating.

IMG 5302

And Brooke made me this bracelet to wear the entire time she is gone with her dad so that I can remember her.  Love + donuts… she understands me.

IMG 5290

The we jumped in the car to drop her off.  Our car selfies are a little different now that Skye’s car seat is in the middle.

IMG 5305

After Knox and I went into a store for a minute while Andrew and Skye stayed in the car.  It was sure nice to get out of the house for a minute!

IMG 5308

For dinner we picked up smoothies and had a bunch of snacks at home.  Someone want to come paint my nails?

IMG 5311

Two random things before I let you go:

Have you ever tried chocolate covered gummy bears?  They are something else.  Andrew got these for me and they are SO good.  I also highly recommend chocolate covered cinnamon bears if you ever get a chance to try those!

IMG 5123

Andrew gave me a new Hydroflask for Christmas and I’m loving it.  It isn’t as big as my last one and it has about 15 less dents from dropping it like my last one too;)  I LOVE a good water bottle.

Just a few more weeks. I know it is soooooooooo hard when your body feels so good. I felt like I could have run immediately. Pregnancy, birth, and recovery were way different for my body (in an exceedingly good way) than the stories I hear.

Dinner: egg sandwiches, roasted veggies, and a pear. Simple and hit the spot!

Yes yes yes to chocolate covered gummy bears!!
yesterday I worked and puppy sat so I am still kinda tired at work today, ha!
Last night we had Chick Fil A……..oh so good!

Lots of good vibes and luck to Andrew! My day yesterday consisted of using every fiber of my energy staying warm. It is freezing here in the Boston area! I know, boring talk about the weather :) At least the sun is shining. Bring me Spring please.

Reply

Amanda! I need to send you a bunch of hot chocolate to help you stay warm! I hope it warms up for you ASAP and enjoy that sunshine today!

The bracelet Brooke made you is adorable! She definitely knows her momma super well.

I haven’t heard of chocolate covered gummy bears but it’s something I will definitely try out if I find them.

A good water bottle is a must! It’s probably the only reason I get enough water into my body during the day.

I love chocolate covered gummy bears! The best ones I ever had were an hour before my wedding – I sent my Matron of Honor’s husband out to get us lunch and to pick up a treat and that is what he brought back – so in love!

We will be treadmilling it for a while here in the Northeast – icy as heck after snow/rain/snow/freezing temps :(

We are trying to eat up leftovers from Christmas Eve – I am contemplating throwing them all out though and starting fresh – why wait until the new year!

Reply

Okay, I love that you had them right before your wedding! I hope you don’t mind the treadmill.. that weather sounds awful! I’m like you, I can only handle leftovers for a few days! I hope you are having an amazing day Jessey!

Just in case you are starting to feel too housebound or starting to feel trapped by cabin fever: If it makes you feel any better, when I look back on my time home with my Christmas newborn it is with fondness. I think I started to feel like winter would never end and we’d never leave the house again or be part of civilization again but now all I remember is the warmth of hibernating with that little baby in a way that didn’t happen with my other kids (all born in the summer.) it’s one of those things…can be so hard while you’re doing it but then it’s the best memory later in life :)

Reply

Dee! Thank you so much for sharing this with me! I’m currently writing you back while snuggled in bed with skye:) As long as I get out every other day or so for a minute I am feeling great but otherwise the cabin fever totally kicks in! I loved reading about your memories of this time of life, thank you for writing this! You are so right… I definitely didn’t get to cuddle like this all day with Brooke when she was born so this is a special treat!

I love my Hydroflask! It keeps my water cold for so long and has zero condensation, which is wonderful because I hate condensation. :)

I had chicken rollups and roasted veggies from Zoe’s Kitchen last night. That place is really good, and I’m bummed there isn’t one in Cali. I’m going back there today, so I’m definitely going to miss some of my favorite places to eat in Texas (I’m looking at you, Potbelly). :/

Reply

I had to go to work yesterday but luckily our boss is giving us half days this week! I’ve never tried chocolate covered gummi bears but those sounds delicious! I have a S’well bottle and it’s about the same size as that hydro flask. Mine is covered in dents so I definitely have my eye out for a new one! Dinner last night was a chicken enchilada bake I made.

I love chocolate covered cinnamon bears!

My husband works for blender bottle so we currently have a giant amount of those all over the house. I switch between using my blender bottle and my contigo bottle.

Which Nursing program is Andrew in?? You said he did a lot of it online? Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Reply

Hey Rachel! Thank you! Andrew is doing the Western Governors Nursing BSN Program. Most of it is online except for clinicals and labs! I hope you are having a wonderful day!

Reply

I have been on the lookout for chocolate covered cinnamon bears since you mentioned them awhile ago and haven’t come across any yet! But the hunt still continues.

I scored a Hydoflask during my office’s yankee swap and I LOVE it!

Reply

Chocolate covered cinnamon bears are my favorite. My son gave me a bag of them for Christmas. Yum!!

Reply

Best present ever… your son is smart! Have a wonderful day Amy!

I’m glad you decided to walk instead of run. I’m slowly starting to workout again after having a baby and it’s so much harder than I thought it would be. Chocolate covered gummy bears don’t sound good but I would give them a try. Hydroflasks are the best water bottles! I like lots of ice in my water and love that the ice stays frozen in it. Dinner last night was supposed to be soup but when we realized we forgot the diced tomatoes, it turned into a pasta dish. Good luck on your test Andrew!

Reply

Your bracelet reminds me, did you see that DM I sent to you in Instagram? Totally random, but I was in London 2 weeks ago, and they had massive donut pillows as prizes at a carnival game. I thought of you, snapped a photo, and sent it. haha — and chocolate covered gummy bears are delicious AND we had burgers for dinner, last night. :)

Reply

Ahhhhh I didn’t see it!!! Going to check right now! Thank you Emily! I hope your trip was perfect!

Reply

Good luck to Andrew on his test! Seems like such an odd time to have a test, right before the new year holiday. I’m sure he will do great. It’s so wise to let your body fully rest before getting back to running. I stated back running too soon after my marathon and ended up pulling a back muscle after an 8 miler. Its been 18 months since then and my back still feels a little funny sometimes. Not worth it. So good for you, for being patient!!!

Reply

Back pain is the worst Dawn! I am so sorry you went through all of that and that it still doesn’t feel 100%! It really is not the best time for a big test!!! I hope your day is an amazing one!

I LOVE chocolate covered cinnamon bears!

Yesterday was a hilly run with friends, putting up Christmas, Costco, Red Robin & Star Wars!

I have 2 Hydroflasks ;) A 40 oz and a 64 oz. I take both to work with me and it’s perfect for the whole day!

Reply

A 64 ounce hydroflask… I need that!your day yesterday sounds absolutely perfect! I hope today is a great one too Marissa!

Reply

It’s so hard to not run when you think you feel good enough to go! But I think you’re doing the right thing, taking plenty of time off!
I am not a fan of chocolate covered gummy bears. The two flavors don’t go together well in my opinion. But I’m not a huge chocolate lover so that could be why!

Reply

Hii! Just wondering if you guys go outside for walks with Skye in stroller? ☺️My baby was born in November 2 years ago and after first 2 weeks we did that all the time! It was a great way to get outside and move a little. Baby bundled up nice and warm of course! I live in Finland and that’s what we do here, in the winter too but not in super cold weather..! Just wondering! Have a great day!

Reply

Hi Karoliina!
I want to come visit you in Finland! So we haven’t yet just because our doctors told us to wait a little bit longer… the air quality in our area isn’t great during the really cold months! I absolutely cannot wait to get out with her and get some fresh air and sunlight for both of us! I hope you are having a beautiful day with your two year old!

I’ve never ever tried chocolate-covered gummy bears but now I’m intrigued! We love gummy bears! Do you have to get it at a special shop? Yesterday was a lot of relaxing and game-playing with the kids. We got hooked on this new Sleeping Queens game we just got them. We use one of those stainless steel bottles we got from Costco. I forgot the brand now but it’s not Hydroflask. We had Beef Pho for dinner. Have a great day Janae! Love your blog!

Reply

Hey Marie! A few different grocery stores have them here! Ahhhh we have that Sleeping Queens game too, so much fun! Thank you so much Marie and I hope your day today is a great one!

Reply

dinner was two hardboiled eggs… we were busy at the hospital!

Reply

You’ve almost convinced me to try the chocolate covered gummy bears. I’ll look for them the next time I’m at the store. I saw some orange & cream swirl gummy bears the other day. I might need those too.
Yesterday was my birthday and I slept in for a little bit. Then I went to the gym to run because the weather was yucky and H was sick (he rides his bike while I run). The rest of the day was spent relaxing on the couch, talking to & texting friends and family. I’m pretty happy with the way the day turned out. I tried shopping on my b-day last year and it was miserable. I def needed the quiet time.
I use a Kleen Canteen for the gym and a Swell or a Yeti for everyday running around. I have a Hydroflask pint cup for water at work.
I basically ate all day long. The last thing was leftover fajitas so I guess that was my dinner.

Reply

Happy happy happy birthday yesterday Elizabeth! Sounds like it was a great day and I need to send you some chocolate covered gummy bears! I need to look up your water bottles! I hope your day today is great too!

Reply

um, eww to chocolate covered gummy bears. I like cinnamon when I add it to recipes and oatmeal but I don’t like cinnamon flavored things.

I cleaned out files and old emails yesterday and did some work.

Dinner last night was a chicken burger with caponata on top (cousin’s girlfriend made the caponata for Christmas), a small sweet potato, swiss chard, and a salad.

Reply

I need to follow your lead and get a good treadmill! It was -2 today but I needed a run so I braved the elements and did 3 miles outside! It was actually a lot of fun to imagine what all the drivers thought of me as they drove by in their toasty cars. Nothing like a cold run to make me feel awesome about myself… but it was very icy so it was a slow run and I’d like to do some speed work after being stuck in the house all day.
I do have a question: do you track your mileage each year? I did this year and last year (425 for this year, 11.45 left over 4 days…) I was just curious how many people do this? It really motivates me through the holidays!

Reply

Way to get out there and run in that weather… you are amazing! Also, you rocked your mileage this year! I also make it a goal to track my mileage and last for a few months and then forget but I have a good idea around how many I run in the year! Keep me updated on your running and drink lots of hot chocolate after your cold run today!

Reply

Andrew doesn’t get a winter break? Poor guy! Good luck to him!
Good for you for resisting the temptation to run. I hope I’m not overstepping here, but I think you’ve said before that you feel a bit addicted to running. I can totally relate! It’s hard to shut that addiction off, and I think we sometimes convince ourselves that doing things like running too early after giving birth, or running through pain is “just fine” when it’s not. I finally decided that maintaining the integrity of my urethral sphincter was more important than maintaining my running endurance :) Plus, every body (and I do mean “body”) deserves a break!!

Reply

I generally only use my water bottle at the gym now, though when I was in school I took it with me everyday. There were surprisingly few water fountains!

Reply

Re not running today: Lessons. Girl, I just find it incredible you ran TO THE DAY you and Andrew brought little Skye into the world. Amazing!

Reply

You’ll be up and running in no time! That’s so amazing that you’re already feeling good enough to run!! I hope to feel that one one day down the road when we have kids, that’s for sure!

I’ve never tried chocolate covered gummy bears, but that’s two of my favorite things so I bet they’re amazingly good!!

Our day was filled with some house work on the house we’re renovating! We put in new french doors which made for a huge update for us!

I use a Healthy Human water bottle and I absolutely love it!! I want to try the hydro flask too! I’ve heard they’re awesome!

We had chicken alfredo for dinner last night! :) Always a big hit!

Have a great Wednesday Janae!!!

Reply

Proud of you for not going for a run! By feeling good it means you are resting and recovering from birth! That’s how it should be even though it makes the temptation greater!!! Truly, let your ligaments heal longer (I know you know this). Walking easy is so nice and it’s kind of fun to have the “excuse” to walk for POSITIVE reasons instead of negative ones (hurt, sick, tuckered out, over trained, etc).

The bracelet….too cute.

Last night’s dinner was a variation of tacos/burritos. We all made our own creation. I had vegan taco salad, my son had taco “sliders” (go figure). My daughter was out to dinner with her friends but she couldn’t resist a small ramekin of taco meat.

Enjoy your day!

Reply

I feel your pain because I’m injured right now… something with my hamstring. Doesn’t feel like anything serious but it hurts when I try to run. I want to run so badly but I know I just need to wait it out. Seems to me like Christmas is both the best and worst time to be taking time off from running, because it’s easy to enjoy relaxing and food with family, but after a while all that relaxing and food makes me anxious to run!

Reply

Good for you for getting in a walk Janae, I bet that felt amazing. I forgot that you guys get the inversion this time of year and walking outside probably isn’t too fun. But it seems like you guys get great light in your house, so hopefully you can hang out in the light a bit. Skye makes me smile every time I see a pic, that little bitty nose, eek!

Good luck Andrew!!!!!
Never tried chocolate covered gummy bears so no opinion here.
Yesterday was filled with work and relaxing for me.
I tend to use leftover Gatorade bottles a few times before I toss them. Once I move of my current rental I will get a real water bottle, things tend to disappear where I am now.
Dinner last night was SOS, it is a recipe my dad tweaked from his army days, it is basically chipped beef on toast. But I love it and it reminds me of home.

Reply

I got the 32oz Hydro Flask water bottle for Christmas! I don’t go anywhere without a water bottle? Chili was last nights eats and tonight stuffed pork chops!! It is super cold here in Iowa so lots of comfort food.

Reply

I would be soaking in a break, particularly if I was on little to no sleep! Rest, Janae….those miles will be there for you. Treadmill walking for the win!

Chocolate gummy bears…haven’t had in a long time, been purposely limiting sugar and they just don’t sound good now. Suppose that means something is working! ;)

Dinner ( pretty much hit repeat every night for this): spiralized sweet potato, pork sausage and olives; toppedwith Swiss cheese. I am not exaggerating when I say I eat this every night. It’s so easy to not have to think about what I am going to eat and makes meal prepping so easy.

Reply

PS… sending you good vibes, Andrew!!! You don’t need luck , you’ve got this!

Reply

I am seriously jelly of Brooke’s bun!!!! Perfectly imperfect!!!
And Skye is just soooooo cuddly!!!! Too soon to ask if you’ll have more kids? I mean…you have to share those genes with the world!!!

Good luck to Andrew!!!! I remember the stress of those exams while in school for my doctorate and it is no joke. NOTHING gets done until the exam was over.

All of my hot yoga peeps swear by the hydro flask because they keep your drinks so cold…but I LOVE my bkr bottles. They aren’t insulated, but they are glass with a silicone sleeve (perfect since I drop everything) and the colors are swoon-worthy!!!

Reply

Never tried chocolate gummy bears but I imagine I would love to. Yesterday = solo run, then we visited my mom and had lunch together and at night I had a movie/wine night with one of my best girl friends. Dinner was persian food she made/her mom made which was amazing.

Today, Jason and I went snowshoeing because it was snowing in the mountains and it was gorgeous.

Enjoy your down time with your family!

Reply

So glad you are feeling great already. It must be all that Running you did. I am getting ready to order myself a hydro flask but can’t decide on size. What size is the one you have?

Reply

Thank you Anne!! I have both the 40 and the 24 ounce and I love them both! I think the 24 is going to be used more because it is a good size to take around… the 40 is huge and hard to take sometimes! Let me know what you end up getting!

Reply

I was wondering if you had any good running books you’d recommend. I’m an avid reader and love to read anything about my favorite activity. Also – I am 100% adding chocolate gummy bears to the list of things to try.

Reply

Hey Hayley!! Good running books are the best… my favorites are on this page!

Let me know if you read any of them! Have a wonderful day!

Well done for sticking to your resolution about not running yet. Generally I’m all in favour of chocolate covered things but I’m not a fan of gummy sweets so I’m not too sure about the bears! We spent a lot of yesterday in the car driving up to my parents, and then the afternoon amid child cousin chaos :) We might get out to a trampoline park today.

Reply

Good luck, Andrew.

Reply

I’ve never tried chocolate covered gummy bears! But I bet they’re delicious!
Great job sticking to your not running yet resolution..It’s 13 degrees here this morning, so I quickly lost my motivation to get out for a run :(
Love the bracelet!

Reply

Chocolate covered cinnamon gummy bears are LIFE!!! Anytime I see them in a store or candy shop, it is a must purchase item. I am also in love my HydroFlask as well, I just need to get a straw lid for it to make it that much better.
My boys have left for the week to be with their dad, so I am living on leftovers and whatever my friends invite me over to eat for dinner….gotta love friends who are like family ;)

Reply

Good luck Andrew!!!
My boyfriends step mom brought me chocolate covered gummy bears when i was home on maternity leave too! I was pleasantly surprised at them, I am a huge gummy lover but somehow never tried them?!

I laughed at how you said your HydroFlask had all these dents in it, mine is the same way! I have the big one and always seem to drop it. You’d think for what material it is made with that it would be stronger haha

For dinner last night…. i had KNOW Foods waffles that took probably an hour to eat. I have a 6 month old who is in the clingy, can’t put him down phase (insert palm hitting face emoji). I love looking at Skye’s pictures, even though it was only a few months ago, I so miss the new baby phase <3

Have a great day!!
