26 Weeks + We Just Can’t Compare Ourselves + Mom Guilt!

26 weeks is here!  Two more weeks until I’m in the third trimester and hopefully that trimester is just going to fly by;)

A few new things to chat about from this week!

IMG 5057

*I am pretty sure I have had a runny nose for the past 22 weeks.  I haven’t had a cold or anything like that but I think pregnancy brings a runny nose for me and I’m not sure why!

*While I’m on my runs—>  a song, a sentence said on a podcast, a thought, a memory, you name it = tears just start coming.  I can never predict when it is going to happen but when it does, I just hope there aren’t a bunch of runners around me.  The hormones are out of control currently.  I told Andrew just to plan on me crying once a day, not because of anything he has done but purely because I just feel really emotional.

*I have done the statistics and 80% of runners/walkers that I pass in the morning while I am running stare right at my belly:)  Sometimes it makes me feel weird/awkward but then I feel hardcore and think they must be cheering me on in their heads.

*I AM SO BUMMED that I don’t have Brooke’s newborn things anymore.  This onesie of hers was my favorite (a sweet reader sent it to me).  Also, I sold Brooke’s crib (pretty much gave it away actually) 1 month before I met Andrew because I had officially given up on the idea of saving it for another baby.   We are currently shopping around for one this week!

*Sandwiches have been sounding really good again.  My doctor just told me to cook/heat up any deli meat that I use and boom… I get a delicious sandwich.  Also, tuna still sounds amazing.   I want all of the fruit and cereal… ice cream has taken a back seat again (but froyo is delicious).  Besides those things, I don’t really know what is sounding good and not good these days until about 10 minutes before meal time.  Cold water always sounds good which I am so thankful for because for a while there I didn’t want to come near water and had to force myself to drink it.  Oh and a glass of milk with most meals… yes, please.

IMG 4777

*The fullness has started to occur.  We were out to eat last week and I told Andrew that I was so full I couldn’t eat another bite and then Knox said, ‘but once we get in the car you are going to say you are hungry.’  Yep, he understands.  I get full really fast but then I’m hungry two seconds later.  I am not one to usually have a ton of leftovers after a restaurant but now I do and I take them home and eat the rest once I get home ha.

*Isn’t it funny how you forget how hard something was… aka the first trimester.  The other day I was thinking about how pregnancy really isn’t that bad.  Those were DEFINITELY not my thoughts during the first trimester.  I’m pretty sure every hour felt like a marathon for a few weeks there when the nausea was bad.  Good thing we forget about the really hard stuff in life sometimes.

*I feel like I am out of breath a lot.  Not during my runs but if I go from sitting to walking up the stairs, once I reach the top of the stairs I am breathing like I just did my 8th yasso.  Going from resting to moving = I am so out of breath ha.

*I needed a new swimsuit for my Las Vegas trip (my last pregnancy one doesn’t fit anymore) and I got this one and love it.  I also got this shirt, this baseball t-shirt and this dress… ASOS has really cute maternity gear and they have great deals!

———————————————————————————————-

One thing that I’ve learned this pregnancy is HOW DIFFERENT each pregnancy can be and how silly it is to even try to compare one pregnancy to another.  I’ve had a few days where I’ve been really frustrated with myself for not running like I did with Brooke.  I think I did my last half marathon with Brooke was when I was 33 weeks or something and still kept up some double digit runs after that.  I can tell you now, my double digit runs are long over until probably next April or so:)  Seven miles is pretty much my max and that is okay!  My paces were faster with Brooke and I just overall felt a lot better when I ran and all day long too.  This pregnancy has brought a lot more sickness and fatigue compared to when I was pregnant with Brooke.  I think the biggest thing we have to remember during pregnancy (and any time of life) is that we are all just doing our best.  It really is impossible to compare pregnancies.  PS I had major mom guilt during that first trimester of this pregnancy… let’s just say the kids saw more movies in those 15ish weeks than they had in the previous three years of their life ha.  When you are sick, you just go into survival mode.  When I would tell my mom about how bad I felt for having the tv on so much and being in bed all of the time, my mom reminded me that they will never remember that stage… and she was right, they already forgot all about it ha.

We all carry kiddos differently, we are different heights, our body handles each pregnancy different and we are all in different stages of life with each pregnancy.  It’s impossible to compare any pregnancies, each one is so different but the end result is more than worth all of the highs and lows along the way.  If you find yourself comparing yourself during pregnancy (or anytime) whether to your own previous pregnancies or to people around you, you aren’t allowed to anymore… look for fun similarities that you might have and focus on the prize you have up ahead (<— keeping my eye on the prize up ahead is what got me through the really sick months and the heartburn right now:)

And a random picture from longer than 3 years ago but when we used to have a Jason’s Deli (I miss that place so much) just a few weeks before I had Brooke.

Parents with more than one kid… how were your pregnancies different from one another?

Do you feel pretty emotional while pregnant or does it just depend on the trimester etc?  I feel like right now my eyes don’t stay dry for long even though I KNOW it is hormones and not real life.

Readers that are pregnant right now… what sounds delicious to you and not delicious to you currently?

Delicious – cereal and milk, fruit, smoothies, slushies, garden tomatoes with salt, banana bread
NOT delicious – most meat

Oh, and ice cream also sounds delicious. But I always love ice cream, especially frozen custard!

Our lists are pretty similar… I love it:) I hope you are doing well Ginger!!!

My second pregnancy was a ton harder. I was exhausted, had morning sickness longer, and overall hated life more. But delivery was a breeze compared to the first time. I mean maybe not an actual breeze but it sucked a lot less. Because my delivery was easier I felt that started me out with my son better than with my daughter. I suffered from PPD the first time but felt great the second time. Oh and the physical recovery was 1000 times better too.

Thank you so much Jesica for sharing! It is crazy how different pregnancies, the birth and recovery are from one another! I hope you and your little ones are having an amazing week!

During both of my pregnancies I had a really stuffy nose – not runny but just super congested feeling… I remembered thinking it was so random. And my daughter has never watched as much TV as she did when I was pregnant with #2 – at least the first few months anyway. Bubble Guppies was on repeat. You do what you gotta do!

Reply

Okay… I am feeling pretty congested too (especially at night)! Good to know I’m not alone with the TV too during the first trimester! SURVIVAL MODE! I hope you are having a wonderful week!

Every pregnancy is definitely different. It doesn’t matter the gender or how many pregnancies you’ve had. They are all different

YES YES YES!! That is what I’m learning now! I was convinced I was pregnant with a little boy this time since things were so different but nope, pregnancies are just so different! I hope you are having a beautiful day Jenny!

Totally needed the pep talk about comparisons. First pregnancy I started at 270 pounds and was almost 300 at delivery. After she was born I took control of my health and lost 180 pounds. Took up running and ran many races including 4 half marathons in less than 6 months. Got pregnant (This one was planned as well) and haven’t been able to run due to some issues early on. I am almost 25 weeks along and still work out 6 days a week but I’ve gained about 12 pounds. It’s been hard looking at some of the younger girls (I’m 40) who can still wear regular pants. Been kind of hard on myself.

Reply

Amanda, thank you so much for sharing your story with me and CONGRATS on losing 180 lbs! Congrats on your pregnancy right now and I can tell you… I haven’t been in normal pants (unless they are completely unzipped) in a very long time. You are doing amazing and I read this quote today I loved and want to share with you:

“We won’t be distracted by comparison if we are captivated with purpose.” Bob Goff

PLEASE keep me updated with how you are doing! We are due so close to each other!

I’m pregnant with my first and can’t imagine being pregnant while watching other kiddos…you’re amazing!

I’ve always been really even-keel and was just thinking the other day how I haven’t cried since getting pregnant and I’m 20 weeks now. I’m just a weird non-emotional lady I guess:)

Readers that are pregnant right now… what sounds delicious to you and not delicious to you currently?

White rice, hummus, avocado toast, anything savory!

Crazy how we forget the bad stuff! but I guess if we didn’t, no one would have more than one kid! :)

Runny nose is totally a pregnancy thing. I looked it up when I thought I had a three month cold…

Subway will heat your meat for you after looking at you like your nuts but sandwiches were totally my pregnancy craving.

I have a three month old and had a fairly rough pregnancy with a super traumatic birth that led to intensive care for my baby. And yet three months later I’m already thinking “gosh it will be fun to be pregnant again!” I have years before I go down that road again but oh do you forget the challenges fast when you snuggle the sweetness of a baby.

P.S. My baby rolled over for the first time today. It’s so much fun!

I think they refer to it as pregnancy rhinitis! Basically your sinuses and the vessels in your nose swell up while pregnant!

Reply

If I ever run past you (which in theory *could* happen because we run on the same trails) (but probably won’t because A–I’m slow and B–I start running later in the morning, I’m so not a morning person) I would think you were amazing, running pregnant, and not weird at all. Just bad-A! :)

Reply

Oh you are so nice! I hope we run into each other… that would be amazing!!!! I hope you are having a beautiful day!

Reply

Pregnancy rhinitis is a real diagnosis! My mom had it with all six of her pregnancies. Clearly we do forget how rough pregnancy is – I think nine months of congestion would have done me in!

My first pregnancy was much tougher than my second. Yes, it was challenging to keep up with my toddler during the pregnancy, but I wasn’t as sick and took much better care of myself the second time around. The adjustment to two kids under two once baby #2 was born? Most days I feel like I’m getting the hang of it, but I’m much harder on myself than my kids are. They won’t remember it down the road, but th toddler is loving the extra treats and TV time!

28 weeks pregnant RN here and also have the constant runny nose. Since your blood volume increases so drastically during pregnancy, your blood vessels dilate and swell, including the ones in your nasal passages. Hence, permacold ;) it’s also why (as my husband informs me) pregnant ladies tend to snore. At least it won’t last forever!

Reply

That makes so much sense… thank you!!! Poor Andrew because I snore even louder than normal now ha. Thanks for letting me know Liz and CONGRATS! Keep me updated with how you are doing!

Reply

A runny nose is common (and normal) in pregnancy. Your body is overproducing mucous ALL OVER which includes your nasal passages. My runny nose started in my first trimester and continued until about 3 months postpartum. I thought it would never go away!!

Reply

So exciting that you’re at 26 weeks! The days may not fly by, but it will suddenly be fall, then cold, then baby!

All of my pregnancies were different, even the degree of morning (or all-day) sickness and the food cravings. Definitely had the runny nose with each. The emotional aspect was very consistent (and now, getting to the “other side” of the hormone spectrum, it’s making a return).

While I can certainly imagine the frustration of having tossed away baby things you’ll have to repurchase now, I also think there’s something really special in that being a reminder of how funny life can be – just past the brink of giving up on a loving future for yourself, Andrew came into your world and changed things entirely. So a new crib isn’t without a price tag, but I hope it’ll be a physical reminder for you how even when you’ve just about given up, things can change for the better! Sending so much love from Canada to you Janae, as always!

PS: Since this is a running blog after all, worth saying I’ve been really bummed lately by some ongoing (and lifelong) IT band issues that have majorly taken down my mileage. Trying to be a good girl with strength training and stretching but nothing seems to help for long. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE tips or support from the HRG community! Please help! For now swimming has been my utter joy: I completed my first sprint triathlon earlier this season (after having never swam with any real purpose beyond floating!) and now am so glad to have another outlet while my running’s taken a hit. I find swimming so lovely and rhythmic – on the good days, at least, since goodness knows there are both kinds! Thanks in advance for any help readers might offer! xo

Terra, I absolutely love what you said… it is so true. Thank you for saying what you did! I am SO incredibly sorry about your IT band… that is the worst!!! The two things that helped me most are scraping and my chiropractor. For me I needed to reactivate some muscle groups (in my glutes especially) that had become lazy meaning my IT band overcompensated. Also with scraping (it hurts but helped so much) it really helps to break up the scar tissue. I wish you lived close so that I could send you to the people that helped mind. Keep me updated and let me know what you have tried!

It is sooo true about being like “Oh! The first trimester wasn’t that bad at all!”. I have an almost 4 month old (wait… what??? Weird.) Anyways… already have baby fever for #2 and I think, “Pregnancy was a breeze!”. Then I actually remember the first trimester when I was ugly face crying in the work bathroom because I couldn’t stop puking…

Even then, they are so worth it when they get here that you forget about the hard parts!

I love reading pregnancy posts. Everyone’s is so different. I haven’t been pregnant yet, but I think in a few years I plan to have kids.
Also Jason’s Deli, I used to have one near my old job and it was one of our favorite lunch spots. So good.

The runny nose aspect of pregnancy was so annoying! (it’s because of the excess fluid in your body, and add in limited space in your body pushing all your organs around!), I ended up on antibiotics at one point from a wicked sinus infection because of it all! Hang in there!

My emotions were a roller coaster during pregnancy with Hannah. First trimester was just ball of nerves with fear due to our history ( I remember talking to you about this…man it’s hard!). Second trimester I wasn’t too bad emotionally. But Third trimester I was SUPER sensitive. We have a relationship where we pick on each other a lot, and normally I love it but I got to the point where I couldn’t take ANY joking around…I took everything too seriously and too personally from anyone but especially those close to me.

I’m with you. 2nd pregnancy with 2nd girl and this one has been so much more difficult. I just physically can’t hang like I did the first time. I keep telling myself to stop comparing the two pregnancies but it’s easier said than done! 14 more weeks to go!

Reply

I am not pregnant and don’t have kids, but you also have to remember that when you were pregnant with Brooke you were not also keeping active with two young kiddos……..that probably tires you out more than you think! And you are doing freakin awesome……..hitting my normal paces when you are 26 weeks…….girl, you’re rockin’ it!

I’m 19 weeks along – and I can relate to so much of what you’re saying: runny/stuffy nose for 19 weeks. Things that always sound delicious: tuna, cold (COLD) water, fruit, grilled cheese and tomato soup. Sweets almost never sound good, and salty stuff only sometimes (which is the complete opposite of normal for me). I have also been very emotional…

I also relate in that my first daughter is 5 y/o and I have almost no baby things of hers anymore. It makes me sad. I also wonder if I’m weird in that I’m also a tiny bit sad that my relationship with my daughter will change. It has just been us for these 5 years. My partner has joined our family, which has been wonderful, but with a new baby I know the relationship my daughter and I have will change. I have loved being her mom so much, and I know she’s going to be the most awesome big sister, but… still, there’s that tiny worry/sadness in the back of my mind that it will be different. I am well aware that “different” can mean better, more wonderful, etc. but my emotions lately make that hard to remember!

Reply

I just kept nodding my head yes as I read your comment. I have those same fears about how my relationships will change and while our different is going to be amazing, it’s different and change can be hard. So yeah, your comment made me tear up a little bit because I totally relate and know exactly what you are saying. Congrats Heidi and I hope you get some tuna and cold water asap! Thinking about you:) Wish you lived closer and we could cry together from our hormones ha!

Treats always sound delicious, particularly vanilla ice cream. Not so great? Tomatoes.

Talk about comparing pregnancies. With my first I ran 15 half marathons including one at 36 weeks. With my son I had 3 days of contractions after a half marathon at 23 weeks. I was brought in to make sure I wasn’t in labor. It freaked me out so much that I really backed off on any physical activity for the rest of the pregnancy. So you never know what you are going ot have happen with any pregnancy.

Your comment about people looking at your belly while running made me think of a story my mom would tell. She was a runner and ran throughout her pregnancy with my little sister. This was back in 1981, when running and especially women running, was not as popular as it is now. My mom said that one of the older ladies who lived on our street would always yell at my mom whenever she saw my mom running. The neighbor thought that my mom was doing damage to herself and to the baby because of running while pregnant. Both my mom and sister made it through the pregnancy with flying colors. Don’t let the looks/comments of others get to you!

I remember we got subway for lunch one day when I was pregnant and I only got one soda for us to share. We got home at sat down to eat and my husband said I should have got soda for each of us in just nice casual conversation and it set the water works off! haha

Once Amelia was born it got even worse! I was crying multiple times a day, just looking at our little precious gift every day was hard not to!

At 22 weeks i’m feeling pretty much just like you are. Except I can’t even do 7miles :( but that’s ok, I’ve made peace with this fact and I’m looking forward to next spring when hopefully this is all going to change.

I just had my fourth baby four weeks ago. My first three pregnancies were a breeze once I got past the first trimester, but this last one nearly killed me. I was on bed rest for a month beginning at 7 weeks. Once one problem would clear up, another would pop up. I had had every intention of exercising this pregnancy, but was restricted from exercise pretty much the entire time. It was a long, hard time for me and my family and pretty discouraging at times. But I was thinking about it yesterday and couldn’t hardly remember the hard things about it, only the good. And I miraculously ended up with a strong, healthy baby in spite of all the problems. You just never can know what each pregnancy is going to be like.

I had to smile because fruit and cereal were everything to me the last few months of my pregnancy. That’s about all I had a desire to eat.
