21 weeks and help a sister out with what I NEED!

Twenty one WEEKS is here!  I’m feeling the best I have so far this pregnancy (I don’t take Zantac anymore!!) and I’m loving that!

*I think the kids love the fact that I take a lot more downtown each day than normal.  My normal self loves to be busy and running around but I’m not like that anymore.  If I don’t have to be busy, you’ll find me like this.  I’m going to transfer this over to after I have the baby a bit too.  It feels really nice to slow down.

IMG 1325

*This same thing happened when I was pregnant with Brooke—>  My sun spots are like 40 times brighter than they normally are (and I slather on the sunscreen each day).  I also get these weird freckle/dots (and a million of them) where the sun don’t shine when I am pregnant too… does that happen to anyone else?!  My OBGYN says that hormones affect pigmentation and that is what is going on… it’s amazing how much our bodies change during pregnancy!

*38 miles last week including a half-marathon.  This was my 4th half-marathon for this pregnancy and most likely my last.  With Brooke I did one at 30 weeks and I’m more than okay with this one probably being my last for a while.  I might do one next month if I’m feeling really good but I’ll probably switch over to the 10k now!

*Our little one is now around 10.5 inches long (according to the internet).

*We have our big/long ultrasound appointment to check everything out this Friday and I am beyond excited for it.  I so look forward to these appointments because I just worry and seeing her moving around and hearing her heart beat calms me down and just gets me more excited to meet her.

*We still haven’t changed our mind about the name we decided on (I wrote about how we came up with a name here.. we aren’t sharing until she is born though)!  I’m seriously amazed that we came up with it so easy and we keep loving it more and more.

*Food that sounds amazing:  Fruit, Bisquick (I might just start eating it straight from the box with a spoon to save time… I kid, kind of), any sort of comfort food, anything I cook at home.

*Food that I don’t want to come near:  Candy.  I ate a piece of Andrew’s sour patch kid candy and had to throw it away… HOW DID I USED TO LIVE OFF OF THAT STUFF!?  I also don’t want anything to do with pizza or marinera sauce items.  Most restaurants weird me out right now which is not like me in the slightest normally… I’ll eat at them but I would much rather eat at home.

*Another weird food thing… the idea of soda makes me sick.  I used to LOVE DIET COKE with everything I had:)  I quit a while ago (except for while on vacations) but still craved it all of the time.  With pregnancy, I want nothing to do with soda which is so weird.  I do have a cup that I reuse to go to the gas station every now and then to go get a big thing of pebble ice and water and it is delicious.

IMG 1343

*I think I have started nesting early… I’m going through each room and organizing/donating/storing everything possible.  I did Brooke’s room while she was gone ha… that made it a lot easier.

IMG 1498

*Sleep: Now that I don’t have the toothache from heck, great!  I just get up to use the restroom during the night and fall right back to sleep.  I can’t stay up late at night (even if I do take a nap that day) for anything… I’m always asleep by 9:30 these days.

*Weight gain, I have no idea (I step on the scale backwards) and I love it like that because I don’t even think about it except for when I sit down to write these posts.  I just have my doc tell me if I’m doing good and so far, great!

———————————————————————-

I need your help.  Big time.

We have nothing for a baby.  I kind of feel out of the loop since it has been almost five years since Brooke was born.  I left all of her baby stuff in California when I moved back to Utah and Andrew didn’t get any of Knox’s baby stuff so we are going to be starting from scratch:)  We also don’t have a ton of room!  We won’t have a nursery so the baby will stay with us for a while until she goes into Brooke’s room.  Luckily Brooke sleeps through just about anything at night so sharing a room will work great for them!  My sister and I shared a room from the time I was a baby until I was 12 years old so I’m excited for these two to get to do the same thing.

Long story short, we won’t be setting up a nursery BUT I do want to know what the best gear is for a new little one.  What things did you love?  Is the DockATot worth it?  Any things that you couldn’t live without with your little one?  We don’t even have a crib anymore (I sold the one that I bought for Brooke to have in Utah about 2 weeks before I met Andrew because I had given up hope that more babies would be an option for me).  Thanks for helping me out so much with everything!  You guys are sure an incredible resource for me and I cannot thank you enough!

———————————————————————-

Two MAJOR questions for you! 1.  How long did your newborn stay in your room at night? 2.  WHAT DO WE NEED!?  I need to know the best gear as far as these things go:

*Bassinet/small crib/mattress?cradle!?  What did you love?

*Recommendations for baby carriers?!

*I don’t need a new jogging stroller (I don’t think) but I NEED a good stroller for everything else.

*Carseat

*Favorite diaper brand?  Wipes?

*A PUMP!!!

*Anything that I have never heard about that you loved… help a sister out;)

(I’ll ask about things like a highchair etc later on when she is a bit older… those questions will come too:)

PS if your comment has a link in it (which I greatly appreciate) sometimes it doesn’t show up right away and I’ll approve it ASAP!

Must haves:

-rock n play!!! If you have a babe who needs more snuggling or an incline and movement the rock n play auto is a life saver!

-everyone I know says the dock a tot is worth it

-zip up swaddle blankets. My son always broke free from the velcro ones so the zippers were awesome

-Costco diapers and wipes all day everyday!!

-sound machine!!!

I second the sound machine!! My 10 year old still uses his!

My daughter is 7 months and my favorites so far are:
Pack N Play with the bassinet insert
Fisher Price Rock n Play
SwaddleMe Velcro swaddles
Sound machine
Play mat
Costco brand diapers and wipes are THE BEST no question!!!!
The medela instyle pump is awesome!

I agree with these recommendations! My daughter just turned 1. We used the Pack ‘n Play with the bassinet insert in our room for the first 2 months, then transitioned to a crib. Now, we use the Pack ‘n Play for our travels. I loved the Rock ‘n Play as it could be moved from room to room and I liked that it had an incline. We had our daughter sleep in it for a few nights when she was 3-4 months old and super congested. Velcro swaddles are wonderful! we love the Costo wipes!

I was commenting to say rock n play for sure! It is a life saver. My babies stay in my room for quite a while because I don’t sleep train until they’re older and they have reflux so they need to be in the rock in play. Also check out the new Chico infant car seat. I had a Chico for my first two and loved it, then got a britax, which I really liked (but not as much as the Chico) for my 3rd. And we are about to have our 4th and last baby and will use the britax again. If we were having more I would look into buying the Chico again.

Kiddos stayed in our room for about 6 months-ish. It’s been 10 years since I had a baby!!! But I swear by the Madela pump and my SIL used one and pumped exclusively for a year and it worked great.

Your little belly is the best! I just went through and purged reorganized my closet, kids’ closets, my kitchen, and the garage and it’s the best feeling ever!!

You look so cute with the little bump! Let’s also talk about the fact that you’ve run more half marathons while pregnant than I have in my entire life…if you can do it now then your girl over here can do it while not growing another human right?! Also so excited to hear the name (in 19 weeks ha).
My younger sister and I shared a room since we were little until I was 12/13 too! It was definitely fun but obviously we fought sometimes. Nothing major just usual sisterly fights which I’m sure you had growing up too.

Excited to read these comments as I need help too!!!

We moved our son into his own room at 6 months on the pediatrician’s recommendation. If we weren’t so nervous to do exactly what our doctor said, we would have done it at 4 months! He now sleeps through the night and we have so much more space.

The items we most love are the soft BabyBjorn bouncy seat, our Baby Jogger City Mini GT stroller (not really meant for jogging but perfect for long walks), the BabyBjorn carrier (we found the Ergo too bulky and complex, and I hate those unstructured “wraps”), and a baby floor gym which our baby started loving much earlier than expected. Also loved my Spectra pump.

Oh and LoveToDream SwaddleUP swaddles.

Rock n Plays were a lifesaver. My girls slept in them for the first 4 months, then transitioned into pack n plays, before we moved them into their cribs.
Swaddle blankets
Zippadeezips once you want to transition from the swaddle.
We used Chicco for our infant carrier and loved it.
We used Huggies diapers and wipes. We use the Great value brand (from walmart) for nighttime diapers though because they seem to work better than the huggies.
Nose Frida is essential!
I have twins, so no stroller suggestions….you have a lot of great options though!
Get several different pacifier options. We planned on using a certain brand, but our girls loved the Tommee Tippee ones. Those are the kind of bottles we used too.

Reply

Just (well, 18 months ago!) had my 3rd with a big age gap (older two were 9 and 7) so I felt out of the loop too!
-I say pack n play over bassinet and use it on bassinet level. They outgrow smaller bassinet quickly and then you can always use the pack n play. We happened to have saved ours!
She was in our room almost 6 months but I had her nappin in her crib sooner to get used to it in her room. Made the transition easier!
-pump is good but pricey so I’d make sure you wanna stick with it before you open it. Non returnable after opened. I had a medela pump in style that a friend gave me and I bought all new accessories. With my other girls had the medela Swing pump. Single sided but worked just fine. Also I’d get the name of a good lactation consultant. I struggled BIG time with my first but ended up getting hang of it with the help of a lactation consultant and then with each kiddo it got easier!
-favorite diapers when she was a newborn hands down was Pampers. Many friends order from the Honest company and love it.
-a good baby wrap or carrier since you will be. Jay chasing the other littles. I loved my moby wrap!
– everyone told me rock nnplay was a must have but ehhhh she didn’t love it. Maybe borrow that if someone has one bc they don’t use it too long.
-a swing was also a must have for me bc she napped there regularly! Some babies are not a fan.

It all comes back to you! Like riding a bike! Ha! Sounds like Andrew is super supportive so that will be amazing and it’s just such an exciting time. I panicked that I would not remember everything. Andddd I didn’t. And that’s ok! The older kids are so incredibly helpful and she just brings so much love and light to our family.
Sending you best wishes.

Oh! Forgot sound machine but I use a floor fan instead and it is a lifesaver. Love it. Helps drown out sound the other kids make while she’s sleeping.

Oops! I Forgot sound machine but I use a floor fan instead and it is a lifesaver. Love it. Helps drown out sound the other kids make while she’s sleeping. Very necessary:)

my babies sleep in a pack n play that has the bassinet attachment next to my bed for 6 months then I move them to a crib.
Must haves: a good breast pump, love medela
Zipper sleepers/swaddles so they can’t get tangled in blankets
Comfy carrier…with my 3rd we’re on the go and it’s so nice to have her in that so I can have free hands. I love the $30 infintino one from target. I also use it in the summer when my older kids are swimming in the lazy river and I just walk around with her strapped to me.

Reply

We borrowed a rock n play from a friend and it was a life saver for my little guy this past year. He was a snuggle bug and HATED his crib. It was either sleeping with him in a chair or letting him sleep in that. 100% worth it!

Reply

36 miles is awesome!!! Glad you’re feeling good.

Reply

Our baby stayed in our room until she was 5 weeks old. Then we moved her into a nursery right around the corner. She started sleeping through the night at that time – I think our snoring might have been waking the poor girl up before that:)

Reply

Bahahah I didn’t even think about that… I am the loudest snorer on the planet so I’m going to have to keep that in mind! Thanks Joan!

Reply

Did you see the video I put of Andrew snoring on Instagram?!! He is NOT a large man but he snores like a linebacker! HA HA HA! It’s so funny to me to imagine you snoring! You’re so little and cute!

Reply

My last baby didn’t even stay on our room and it was heaven for me. My middle child stayed in our room for 4 months because she woke up every two hours! It was a nightmare.
I loved my ameda pump and since you’re having a girl you need to try out girlie glue for her hair. It’s the best hair bow stuff EVER!
Don’t get a swing, get a bouncer because you can move it everywhere with you. If you’re doin a diaper bag, I love my Lilly jade. Expensive but worth every penny. Bumbos are great for when they are a little bit older to help baby sit up and double as a feeding chair. I also love my IKEA high chair!!

Reply

Definitely go spectra for a pump, available on Amazon and fantastic.

So excited for you and your family!! You look awesome, I’m glad you’re feeling so good. :) Okay, so because I just had a baby a few weeks ago, all these items are fresh in my mind haha here’s some essentials for me:
-Owlet Monitor: okay, so this is super pricey but is seriously so worth it in my opinion. I was a anxious nut case with my first making sure she was breathing while sleeping, which obviously made me not sleep, but this time around I can lay him down at night or for naps and know if something is wrong, the owlet will alert me! It’s the best!:)
-thoughts on the Dock A Tot: so I just purchased this a week ago in hopes of it making him sleep better, and so he could safely co sleep with me while my husband is away, and I’m not sure what I think yet haha it hasn’t made him magically sleep 8 hrs a night but it is nice to just have a safe place for him to lay down
-Swaddle Me velcro swaddles
-nightgowns from Carters (so easy to change diapers at night!)
-rock n play (or a swing of some type): so nice to be able to set him down or let him nap in there
-I have a Solly wrap and it’s been so nice to have, especially as he’s my second, so I can be hands free with my daughter!
-I just purchased the city select double stroller and am super excited to test it out!!

Okay… I’m sure there’s more, but that’ll do for now :)

Reply

I was going to say the Solly wrap also! It’s been perfect for us with a toddler and a newborn. It looks intimidating but it’s so easy when you get the hang of it. Also, Halo sleepsacks are amazing!

Reply

Really depends on the kid! I had all these grand plans of my daughter sleeping in the pack n play in our room, except she refused to sleep anywhere but my arms! She didn’t like the rock n play either, but I know a lot of parents swear by it. For the first 4 months, the only thing she’d nap in was the snuggapuppy swing, so that was my holy grail item (we sleep trained at 4 months, so now she sleeps great in her own crib. She slept in the pack n play in our bedroom until 8 months, and then moved to her own room. She is 9 months old now).

We loved the Halo velcro swaddles (the Swaddleme pods never worked for us). After she started rolling, we put her into Halo sleep sacks. She didn’t take to pacifiers, but she plays with her wubanub (it’s a Soothie pacifier sewn to a stuffed animal) when we travel now.

Baby carrier wise, we have the Lillebaby, and love it. It works from newborn all the way to toddler, fits both me and my husband, has nicely padded straps and lumbar support. My daughter hated all carriers until she was about 5 months, but now she’s totally cool in the carrier when we are out of the house (we also have a ring sling and a mei tei, but those get used less often).

We have a Britax B-Agile stroller that came with our Britax travel system. It works okay. We bought a ZOE deluxe stroller for travel cause it’s only 10 lbs. That one doesn’t have a full recline though, so probably not good to use with a newborn. Our daughter also hated her carseat, so we stopped using her infant one after like 3 months and moved up to the Britax Boulevard Clicktight, which I highly recommend. It’s heavy, but super sturdy (it has a steel frame!), and has a SUPER EASY install. It’s also plushy and comfy and my daughter stopped screaming all the time after we got it.

Diapers, we use the Babyganics brand. Pampers have also worked for us, but I kind of hate how they smell, and also how squishy the absorbant gel stuff in it gets when wet. The Babyganics ones are a bit stiffer, but feel more like matte cotton paper, and don’t have that chemical smell I hate. My kid isn’t a super wetter though.

Pump, do you have health insurance? I think you can apply for a free pump through insurance b/c of the ACA. Choices may vary depending on your plan though. I use the Spectra 2, and love it. This pump is also fairly cheap to purchase off Amazon if you cannot get a pump through insurance, or don’t like your insurance options. It’s a great price considering is hospital grade!

some of our necessities also include: Dohm white noise machine, yoga ball (sometimes bouncing on it was the only way to calm her down), baby probiotics (our LO had a lot of gas issues when she was younger), and the boppy (some people prefer My Brest Friend). I’m sure there are a lot more, but I’m drawing a blank now. I wrote a novel anyway!

Reply

I just wanted to second that about the pump, I got mine free through insurance. I went with the Medela double electric and it lasted me 2 years of pumping!

Reply

Dockatot is definitely worth it! Especially if you are breastfeeding. You don’t even need to get out of bed at night. My baby girl is almost 8 months old and we just stopped using it about a month ago. Also I use a medela breast pump twice a day at work and it works great. :)

Reply

Hi! I just had my second baby boy (20 months apart) we also don’t have a nursery and I love this mini crib for our room!! https://m.buybuybaby.com/m/product/babyletto-origami-mini-crib-in-grey/1044148003

It is small and has wheels so I can move it around my room as needed!

I’ve used several pumps and the Spectra pump is by far the best in my opinion (and cheaper than Medela on Amazon). I actually own two now one to keep at home and one to bring to work!

I use the Ergo 360 carrier. I have a Chicco Keyfit infant car seat and the Britain for the convertible. To be honest I don’t love my Chicco Keyfit- maybe the newer models are nicer but I hated the canopy and the newborn inserts for mine.

Some things I couldn’t live without for both of my boys: the My Brest Friend nursing pillow, Boppy newborn lounger, bibs! Soooo many bibs bc both of my boys drool sooo much!

Hope that helps!!!

Reply

A Boppy lounger will save your life. No joke.

Reply

I agree with a lot of these suggestions. I was going to suggest Ikea baby furniture. It’s very affordable and high quality but also not huge. We have a tiny little nursery but everything fits in there pretty well. I use the Medela double electric pump…. but mostly breastfeed. My daughter is 9 months old. Also- when you get there look up baby led weaning. ‘it’s been a blast.

Reply

Both of my nieces sleep with sound machines and they are lifesavers! Esp if you have two kids in one room!

Reply

When I registered at babies r us, they gave me a number for their “breast pump solutions team” and they contacted my insurance company and basically did all the work for me to get a medela in style advanced pump for free (I just had to pay for the optional tote bag). Definitely check it out to see if your insurance company will cover a pump!

Reply

Breast pumps are free due to the affordable care act (Obamacare)

Reply

I used a similar program through Target and it was so easy and they shipped my pump directly to me. So handy!

Reply

I am registered at target…. Who did you talk to exactly to get this kind of help?

Reply

Get the dockatot! It’s seriously saved my sleepy sanity. The sleep regression at 8 months nearly made me batty.

I also loved the swaddle me swaddles, they zip up and keep their arms up so the don’t roll as easy.

I loved the baby Bjorn, we used that a lot. Probably my fave when it comes to baby wearing.

Our baby slept in a pack n play in our room until about 7 months, so the transition to her own room was rough and thats why the dockatot was so great.

Congrats again!!!!

I’m going to be a first time mom so I probably have no idea what I’m talking about but the dock a tot does not seem safe to me! I know people swear by it though. I’m going to be stalking these comments to see what I need for baby too :)

Reply

No, you’re right. It’s not safe. The AAP states “Place the baby on his or her back on a firm sleep surface such as a crib or bassinet with a tight-fitting sheet.
Avoid use of soft bedding, including crib bumpers, blankets, pillows and soft toys. The crib should be bare.” (https://www.aap.org/en-us/about-the-aap/aap-press-room/pages/american-academy-of-pediatrics-announces-new-safe-sleep-recommendations-to-protect-against-sids.aspx).

I loved the Halo bassinest for my now 17 month old. She slept in it in our room for about 3 months.

Reply

The one thing I had that I absolutely LOVED was the hands free pumping bra. Seriously, it was the best thing ever and made very inconvenient times of needing to pump (like driving, working from home, reading books to my older daughter) very convenient! I would just put on the bra, attach pump, cover up (especially while driving?), and it was sooooooo much easier. My girls both slept in our room about 6-8 weeks. I’m such a light sleeper that I just couldn’t sleep with their sweet little baby noises.

Reply

I got my breast pump for free from my insurance. I’m not sure if that’s an option in your plan but it’s definitely worth calling to see. I swear by the mamaroo, it is worth every penny and the only way I showered for so many months. My baby loved it. Maybe get a pack in play for your room, that’s what we do. I typically have the baby sleep with us till around 4 months and then I put them in their own room. For a stroller I love the ones that hold the car seat so I don’t have to take the baby out, with older kids you’re always on the go and I feel like keeping them in the car seat keeps them a little more sheltered in busy places. We got our crib from babies are us with a coupon. I would recommend registering at every baby place, that way you get free baby stuff and they mail you coupons.

Reply

Breast pumps are free because of the affordable care act (Obamacare). Every insurance plan must cover them.

Reply

About breastpumps being free and covered by all insurance plans– unfortunately, that is not always the case. We had Tricare Reserve Select and no other insurance plan, and Tricare would not cover the cost of a pump because they are only a “supplemental” insurance and apparently exempt from the ACA. So I had to buy my own pump. Even with a doctor’s note, Tricare would not cover the cost of a breast pump. Call your insurance ASAP to see if they will cover the cost for you!

Reply

I agree with everyone who said Halo swaddlers and rock and play…we for sure used those to death. My boys each stayed in my room for a year and then moved to their shared bedroom. But they both had kind of traumatic starts so we were anxious to be seperated. My biggest piece of advice (and I really really think it is good advice) is to buy a decent but cheap pump for when you travel but RENT A HOSPITAL GRADE PUMP. Most hospitals have them (especially if they have a level 2 or 3 NICUs) I did this with both my boys and it was covered by insurance and made such a positive diference in quantity and time it took to pump!!!

-Love to Dream Swaddle Up, then Zipadee Zip
-nursing pillow (boppy or my Brest friend)
-we loved the dockAtot
-Spectra pump, hands down. So much better than Medela!
-sound machine
-babywise book
-city mini stroller
-solly wrap
-some sort of swing, we had the rock n play & mamaroo
My daughter was in our room until 4 months. She started napping in her room about 3 months. There is so much great baby stuff out there!

Oh I love this post, I want to shout from the rooftops how much I love certain baby items!!
-crib-if you aren’t opposed to hand-me-downs and painting I have one you can have! I LOOOOOVE the rock and play. Kennedy slept in that until 4.5 months (last week), they fit right next to your bed and you can just reach over and rock them. Plus they are so light weight, I would take mine to my moms house all the time for her. they are so great!
-I love the swaddle wraps (Moby or similar) because they are so snuggly in there. I also like something more sturdy for when they get a little bigger, so like the ergo. They are so worth the investment so you can hold them but still get other things done. Just be careful around the stove!
-Diapers-I am a die hard Costco shopper and they are by far the best. The Kirkland signature diapers are just like huggies so I buy those… unless huggies are on sale, in which case they are cheaper and I stock up. AKA I buy two boxes every times I go! I like the Costco brand wipes but they aren’t as strong as huggies, when those go on sale they are a better deal than Kirkland. They end up being the same price but you get a couple hundred more wipes! People will say luvs are cheaper or other store brands but I feel like Kennedy leaks out so much faster in cheaper diapers, I end up using more diaper so I prefer to buy them at Costco and save money!
-I got my pump through insurance but I ended up not ever having a milk supply so I can’t say much about pumps as I am strictly formula feeding. But I will say COSTCO IS SO MUCH CHEAPER THAN ANYWHERE FOR FORMULA. like literally half the price. It is the EXACT same as Similac but way cheaper. We only buy that stuff, it’s the best!
-I love the Aiden + Anais swaddle blankets, they are the best! I listened to their podcast on How it’s Made per your suggestion and that made me love them even more. Super cute, breathable and multi functional. win win win! However babies can get out of even the tightest swaddle when they sleep so for bed I loved the zipper swaddles. the ones that zip from the bottom are the best because you can change a diaper at night without waking them up, that mixed with the sleeping gowns and it’s perfect!
-other items I wouldn’t live without are the boppy, bumbo and a swing… life savers!!!
-The chicco carseat/stroller is the best. they are more expensive but soooo worth it!!
Hope that helps! You have the cutest bump ever! I love the baby posts!!

We were living in a smaller house when our second daughter was born. She was in our room until we sleep trained around 6 months and her and her sister have shared a room ever since. I wouldn’t have it any other way and am grateful we started them sharing so young. I think it would have been harder to transition later. Now we are due in October with our third daughter and I’m not sure where to put her. In her own room? Squeeze them all in the same small room? I also feel like we are starting from scratch too. Things change so much from year to year in baby trends. I do t even know what a dock-a-for is!! But the carrier we have always loved is the Ergo. But then again I have no idea what else is even out there anymore to compare it too!!

Reply

I just had my 4th baby 4 weeks ago (my 2nd girl!). We don’t have a room for her, so we bought the DockaTot to keep her with us until she can share with her big sis. So far so good! I’ve always hated swaddling my babes because they seemed to hate it, but the halo sleep swaddles have worked like a charm with this one, and she takes a nuk (wubbanub) like a champ. Also invested in a Dohm machine this time and I think I like it just as much as the baby! I’ve had the same Medela pump for 5 years now and it still works just fine. Love como tomo bottles! Congratulations to you and your sweet family! Such an exciting time.

I loved these swaddle blankets. I had one with my first and I would always pull it out of the dryer. I bought an additional one for my second kiddo. It is big and easy to wrap them up.The nightgown pjs and pajamas with zippers are really nice to have for easy diaper changes.

I think insurance might cover breast pumps now so you might want to look into that.

I’ve heard great things about the dokatot by we just used a hand me down bassinet. Worked just fine.

Carriers: ktan for when she’s little and lillebaby when she gets bigger. I use mine every day.

I use the medala breast pump. Works great.

Definitely need a noisemaker. We use the dohm one.

You need a boppy. Or breastfriend. Whichever.

Lucy’s List has all the great baby gear info in one place. Google it.

Rock and play sleeper for naps and nighttime sleep the first 3-4 months. Loved this item so much I had one for each floor of my house so I didn’t have to carry it up/down stairs. Definitely recommend a noise machine to drown out sibling noise when baby is trying to sleep (mybaby by homemedics soundspa has worked awesome for us for over a year), Medela pump in style (should be free for you as long as the affordable care act is still the law), bottles that don’t have a million parts, robeez soft baby shoes for when she starts crawling a lot and cruising. Good luck mama!

So exciting! We tried to have our little guy sleep in our room, but he hated the bassinet for some reason so he moved in to his bed really early and one of us slept in his room until 6 months (because of the recommendation for SIDS prevention). I shared a room with my sister when I was little and loved it! We moved when I was five and I got my own room, but I still loved having sleep overs in her room!

My baby slept in our room for six months in a pack in play in the “cuddle cove”. (Swaddled) started sleeping through the night at 5 weeks old.

Amazon for diapers. If your a prime member & subscribe to them monthly, saves a ton of $$$. I get a box of 160 for around $19 every four weeks. (They are $35.99 at babies r us & $24.99 at target for same size box)

Hands down best swaddle is the miracle blanket. Watch the YouTube to see how to wrap properly. It helped sooth my son and turn him in to a great sleeper. I’m currently 20 weeks and already unpacking boxes to find the swaddles! Good luck

My must haves:
The swaddle wraps that Velcro. I can’t remover the name of the brand, but it made a huge difference in sleep for my girls when they were newborns.

Pampers diapers for girls all the way. Every Huggie diaper they blew out down the leg.

Petunia pickle bottom boxy backpack diaper bag. I’ve used it for five years now and it’s still looks like new. I can easily wash the outside of it and car wear it as a backpack as well.

Ergo baby carrier. It transfers to the back when they are older which is perfect for hiking.

Chico keyfit 30 car seat. We bought two bases so it’s easy to transfer the baby from one car to the other. I work and so my husband drops my girls off at the babysitter and I pick them up. The extra base has made it so much easier.

Not a necessity both a client of mine have both my girls minky couture blankets and they are both obsessed with them. My oldest will be 5 in November and still takes her blanket everywhere.

For baby carries I have a baby k’yan that’s I love for when they are tiny and squishy and I also have a tula for when they are bigger. My second just turned one and I still use the tula multiple times a week. It’s nice to be able to hold him and still have hands free for my 3.5 year old. Honestly I used the tula rather than a stroller most times. I find it easier to go on walks without it.

My insurance covered my breast pump. I had the option to pay for an “upgrade” over what was covered, which I did. I have the Medela PISA.

My daughter just started sleeping in her crib at night on Sunday. She is five and a half months old. She had been sleeping in the Graco Travel Lite Crib in our room and we loved it. It’s slightly smaller than a pack and play, but it packs up similarly. (The two times we traveled she still could sleep in her bed.) The biggest reason we moved her was because she started wiggling around during the night and would wake up when she got “stuck” the short way. I’m sure you sister has a bunch of stuff she can lend/give you and since she just had a baby somewhat recently would know what the best products are too!

My children never slept in my room (unless on vacation). They went straight to their rooms in cribs and we used video monitors.

I hear rock n plays are life savers.

I wrote a post about my first year favorites when I used to blog… figured I’d share that too – especially the hands free pump bra if you plan to pump a all! You can work on your blog and pump at same time :) http://whattheschneck.blogspot.com/2013/11/first-year-favorites.html?m=1

The one thing I couldn’t live without was a baby bjorn. Get the expensive one with lumbar support. It’s nice to have your hands free while still keeping your baby close. It was really good for my separation anxiety. I couldn’t wait to get my son out and not be pregnant anymore but once he was out, I missued having him all to myself.

So, the Dockatot IS really pricey, but IMO it’s so worth it. I never thought I would cosleep but I wanted my baby close to me so I could constantly check on him and know he was okay. We put it between us in our bed for the first 4 months or so. I loved it because the raised sides made me more confident that we wouldn’t roll on him or anything while we were asleep. :)

At around 4 months we put him on his own mattress in our room with the dockatot on the mattress. It was great because even though he wasn’t in bed with us, he still had the comfort of the familiar dockatot, so he loved it.

Then, when all of us were ready for him to be in his room, again, the dockatot made the transition so much easier and familiar for him. It’s also great for travel or visiting family because we can always take his bed with us so he feels st home!

Soooo excited for you!! A rock and play is a must have! Especially one with an infant insert to make them extra cozy :)

My baby girl slept in her rock and play exclusively for the first 3 months while swaddled, then I transitioned her to crib in her room with dock-a-tot. I used the halo sleepsack swaddle too. I don’t think I would have bought the dock a tot on my own at first but after using it I 100% would buy it. I got to borrow it from a friend! I recommended it to a friend and her baby loved it too!!

I use the spectra s2 pump and it is the BEST. I got it for free through health insurance but it’s affordable on Amazon! It is seriously so much better than the medela pump. It has a much more natural suction and all the mommy groups recommend it too. I primarily nurse but always pump a little extra milk every morning when I wake up to save some for the freezer :)

Also use a loud white noise sound machine :)

-Costco wipes!!
– Miracle Blanket
– Conair sound machine
– playmat
– Spectra pump

One more recommendation! Chicco keyfit car seat!!! Love it and there is a light weight stroller that attaches to it :)

Rock n play with the auto rock plug into the wall feature I loved!

I exclusively pumped for my oldest for a year (awful!!) and had both medela and spectra and I have to say spectra is much better. I had the one with built in battery and that was a lifesaver with a toddler running around the second time.

The Miracle Swaddle blanket was the best for us!

The new recommendations are for babies to be in your room for 6 months to a year. I only lasted about 6 months and I was happy to have my space back again.

I know you said you struggled with breastfeeding and I did both times as well. It turns out both of my girls had posterior tongue ties which causes them to struggle with a good latch. We had them fixed by an ENT who is an expert in the field and I still couldn’t get them to latch. I think you have such an amazing well balanced attitude about it. If it works out great and if not your will still have a healthy baby girl. Most important is a happy mom and pumping all the time made me miserable!

My baby boy is 3 months and my favorites are our Grayco Classic Connect car seat because it has a stroller that you can click the car seat into while they are a baby and then it’s a regular stroller once they are done with the baby car seat. My other very favorite favorite are woombie or love to dream swaddle blankets. OMG can’t say enough great things. My baby when he was a newborn would scratch his face when he would cry and kick off his blanket when he wasn’t fully awake and wake himself up. They keep their arms in and they can kick their legs but the blanket doesn’t come off so they don’t wake themselves up as much so they sleep longer.

Definitely check out Lucie’s List (website that has reviewed all baby gear and needs)! https://www.lucieslist.com

We got a mini crib this time instead of a bassinet (my daughter never slept well in her bassinet) and our son seems to love the mini crib. We plan on keeping him in with us for at least the first 3-4 months (he’s two months now).

Must haves:
-Rock n play (ideal for naps since it’s cozy, inclined and can be moved around the house)
-swing (we have so many, including the super pricey mamaroo) and yet both kids preferred the Fischer price swing
-a good double pump (recommend medela advanced in style)
-pamper swaddles for diapers (only kind that I swear doesn’t leak)!
-Halo sleep sack and/or swaddle
-BabyBjorn carrier (seriously the only easy one I’ve tried, and I’ve tried so many)
-baby tracker. I found I preferred this paper journal compared to any app I could find. It was really helpful for doctor’s appts and starting to see routines. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/9729375011/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1501725218&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=baby+tracker+journal&psc=1

Pump: Medela Pump in Style

We actually got this free through our insurance so check to see if yours allows a free pump!

Bassinet: we just used a pack n play in our room with both of our girls until they were sleeping through the night (about 6 weeks). Then we moved them to a normal crib in their room (they share). We still use the pack n play tons while traveling and when we have visitors so it wasn’t a waste of money

12 Hours Sleep by 12 Weeks Old: sleep guide book that saved our lives! Both of our girls were sleeping through the night by 6 weeks old and still do (now ages 3 and 1). It just sets up a feeding schedule that helps them to sleep through the night and to learn to self soothe. It worked so beautifully with both babies…If I had to recommend only ONE thing this is it!

Baby Carrier: Ergo Baby. This thing was awesome!! We used it to actually get stuff done around the house, grocery shopping, family walks, etc. Both babies LOVED being in here. It was the only way I got anything done (cooking, vacuuming, laundry, chasing after the first kid) with my second baby who wanted to be held all day everyday.

Swaddles…Swaddle Me brand found at Target. One of our girls loved to be swaddled, the other hated it ha

Car seat/Carrier: we use the Graco Click Connect system. We have 2 bases (one for each car) and one carrier that we just click into the base. I think the second base was pretty inexpensive on Amazon.
http://www.gracobaby.com/en-US/snugride%3Csup%3E-reg%3B%3C-sup%3E-click-connect%3Csup%3E-trade%3B%3C-sup%3E-35-infant-car-seat

We really didn’t have anything else other than baby toys and blankets. I was determined not to spend a ton of money on stuff we’d only use a couple of months and I don’t feel like we missed out on anything!

First your questions and then other things that we loved. :)
1. Baby slept in our room for one night, and then we said get that baby outta here! They are just too noisy! So we moved him to his room the next night. Ha! However, we have a video monitor (only $200, motorola) so it was fine.
2. Rock and Play. These are awesome! Baby can sleep in them. It was great for us as well because he had reflux and colic. So it was nice to have him sleeping upright a little bit.
3. I got a Bjorn for my shower. I have heard the Ergos are AMAZING though!
4/5. We have the Gracco jogger/car seat combo. Love it! The car seat snaps directly into the stroller. I don’t use it to jog though. I would rather go super early/late to go without him. I also think other joggers might be better. It is nice because it is super smooth because of the jogger wheels. I know lots of people recommend the city select-but no stroller is worth $700-800 in my opinion. Plus you have to pay for every option. Like a cup holder. Really?
6. Both from Costco! (Same with formula. Funny. When I quit nursing, the $40 a can for “gentle/colic/reflux” formula was worse on his tummy than Costco’s.
7. Pumps are now free with your insurance. I was able to get the madela pump in style with mine.
I was a working mom and nursing. So I have a few tips about breastfeeding/pumping if you need them ;)
Buy fenugreek if you are worried about your supply. Take 2 pills 2xs a day until you or your pee smells like maple syrup and then stop. Your supply should increase.
I am sure you will get it figured out this time though. And if not-who the freak cares?! Get your baby the food and nutrition she needs!
8. PJ’s that are the dress kind. SOOO easy for night time changing. Avoid snaps like the plague! If you have to use footies-zippers! Who ever made snap pjs is the devil. They are just testing your patience and skills as a parent at 2 am. Ha! I would put baby back to bed all buttoned wrong because I didn’t want to have to try and figure them out when getting up every 2 hours.
9. No diaper genie. Poop goes in a Walmart plastic bag and straight out to the trash!
10. I bought a few nursing bras and HATED them. They offer ZERO support. I seriously loved wearing my Moving Comfort Juno sports bra. I even wore it for labor and delivery. I loved it while working out when pregnant and even after. I still wear it (obviously in a different size). Adjustable in the back, and velcro straps. Seriously keeps the girls in place. ;) They are now apart of Brooks. See if they will send you one to review ;)
11. Lots of people love the boppy nursing pillow. I didn’t care for it. I preferred to nurse without something. Just felt awkward.
12. Dr. Brown or Tommy Tippee Bottles
13. Lots of Lansinoh cream for when you get sore. I also would use a nipple shield during those first few weeks as we were getting used to the whole nursing thing. I know the nurses will tell you not to, but I totally did and it didn’t ruin anything or cause nipple confusion. Psh. I even would use a nipple shield months after. Sometimes he would just refuse to nurse, so I would pop one on.
14. The yellow butt cream can’t remember the name. Google it. I am sure it will pop right up ;)
15. Muslin swaddle blankets. We used these as burp cloths though.
16. For actual swaddles we loved the velcro ones from Walmart. Seriously zero hassle! Especially in the middle of the night. Pop them in their potato sack and velcro them shut. As far as sleeping in the rock and play-we just cut the legs off the bottoms of the swaddles so he could still be buckled in. We had some that were not cut off, and some that were.
17. Noise machine from Walmart $20.
18. Reclining rocking chair. You are going to be spending a ton of time it. Get one that is comfy.
19. Gas drops
20. We didn’t do a diaper bag. Yes they are cute, but we just did a normal backpack. We love it so much better! Plus, if my husband takes him, he doesn’t have to carry around a girl bag ;)
21. I do have a diaper wallet though. I love this because if I have to change a diaper, I just grab the wallet and not the whole dang bag. I did the Elari diaper wallet.
P.S. (Get some nursing garments ;) )
I think that is everything. Phew!

The dock a tot is so expensive but so worth it in my opinion. We bought it when we had our son and it was so nice to have him sleeping between us and was easy to roll over in the middle of the night to nurse him. He slept in it for 4 months in our bes before we transitioned him into his crib. We are expecting again and so its going to get even more use which makes me feel better about the cost.

Janae, you are so cute. It is a lot of fun following you on your journey with this sweet baby. A few things:
1. Breast pumps are covered under the Affordable Care Act – this means they are 100% free! Given the future of the ACA is uncertain, I would lock in a pump now. Reach out to your insurance and ask what you need to get the pump ASAP. I didn’t have to do very much, and was so grateful to have it.
2. Merlin’s magical sleep suit. This was a life saver for us. Our son also liked the Halo sleep sack when he was really young.
3. Nose freida. Gross looking but another life saver when the baby gets congested.
Those are my top three!

My 13 month old is snoozing away in her crib across the room from me right now. We haven’t moved her in with my 3 year old yet because she does not sleep through the night. Sadness. Newborn stuff:
-she loved the snuggle nest when she was little. It’s like a mini bassinet that sits on the bed. We had a co-sleeper for my son and he hated it. When she out grew the snugglenest she moved to a pack and play and then the crib.
-he loved Velcro swaddles, she didn’t need them.
-we wouldn’t have survived his first four months with out the rock and play, she was kinda meh about it.
– my carrier of choice depends on my mood, moby, baby ka’tan, and ergo. I like the wraps when they are tiny and each carrier stresses your body differently so variety helps.
– we half cloth and half honest diaper. Costco wipes (mostly because my parents work for the wipe company and that is what they bring over when they come)
My big advice is nurse if at all possible but introduce a bottle by 5 weeks. We missed the mark with my daughter and never really did the bottle thing and it was a pain. Now she will take her milk in a straw cup but wow. It was a while before I could be away from her.

Another vote for Rock and Play as a bassinet for your room! We kept my son in his in our room until he was about 6 or 8 weeks. At that point he was started to wake up from my husband and I making noise so we figured it was time for him to move into his own room.

We have been doing Pampers Swaddlers for diapers – and find that the cheapest price is through Amazon Subscribe and Save (even cheaper per diaper than the brands offered at Costco that are similar quality). Not to mention that delivery of huge boxes of diapers is easier than buying them at the store! And then we do Costco wipes and stock up when there is a coupon!

Congrats!!

Ok I didn’t read the other comments so sorry if these are duplicates. My 3 rd was spaced 4 years apart so I felt like the same way.

Rock and play!! The pediatrician referred to them as “crack for babies” but it saved my life with our little reflux baby.

Swaddle blankets with Velcro like Halo or Summer

Baby carrier of some kind, I liked Baby Bjorn

I moved out of her room at about three months, when she was sleeping most of the night.

Reply

The Wombie swaddle is a necessity in my opinion, a swing, baby carrier (I like wraps in the beginning then the bjorn, then ergo when they can hold their head up), white noise machine, a good nursing pillow (I love the honest company one that is kind of like the brestfriend style but so soft and organic cotton). Good nursing clothes….can’t think of what else, rocking my babe to sleep!

Reply

We used the rock n play during the day for naps and then we used a pack n play in our room at night for I believe about 5 months until we transferred her to her room in a crib. The transfer went great because the pack n play is already crib-like. The Velcro swaddles were awesome…as well as swaddle sleep sacks after that. We also used the NEWBORN lounger all. The. Time. We didn’t have too many bells and whistles…cause we don’t have much space, And I can’t stand too much crap! Just tried Kirkland diapers for the first time and they are exactly like huggies..never used a sound machine cause we can be loud ish so I wanted her to get used to it from the beginning ; lol.

My little one stayed in our room for the first 5 1/2 months. His room is on a different floor than ours though, so it just made more sense.
Cartier wise I LOVE my Ergo! I have the original ergo that was passed onto me from a cousin and it is the most comfortable! I have two other carriers and once I tried the ergo, never went back. It’s the best – no pain or strain whatsoever. i highly recommend and even at 18 months, I’m still happy to carry my son in it when we travel.

We had a cosleeper bed passed onto us that we used when he was in our room and I loved it! It pushed next to the bed and made life so easy for middle of the night feedings and he had a safe place to rest. Was easy to transport if needed too and stores nicely like a pack n play when not in use.

In regard to your face and skin changes, it is normal and I had great luck with my Rodan + Fields products. Would love to share more with you! Amazing.

+Spectra S2 pump (it’s hospital grade and I love it so much more than my Medela PIS

+Chicco KeyFit 30 for infant seat

+We got a Dock a Tot for my 3 month old and it was worth it for us. My first bed-shared from the very beginning because he absolutely would not sleep without me. It was great then, but now he’s a 3 YO and still in my bed lol. We wanted to be prepared with our new little guy so that if he needed to be in our bed he could, but would also still have his own space so the transition to a crib would be easier. We used the DAT in our bed for about a month? 6 weeks? And then put it in his crib which is right beside me in our room. He did that for a few more weeks, but then he started wanting to sleep on his stomach so he was completely out of the DAT by about 2.5 months. I think a lot of people get way more use out of it, but even so, I’d pay every penny for it again because he slept so so well in it from day one.

My other piece of advice is to hold off on buying “all the things” until you know what your baby will actually use. Find a friend who has a baby now and ask if you can borrow some velcro swaddles etc. We spent so much money when my first was born on all those types of things, but neither of my boys have really used them at all. You can also use the Facebook Market thing to get gently used baby things in excellent condition! Think Mamaroo, etc. just be sure to get a new car seat.

I’m so excited for you guys on this new journey. I’ve been reading since way before you had Brooke :)

1. Get a diaper bag backpack. It frees up both hands and makes carrying baby and other things much easier. We have a Vera Bradley one.

2. Rock ‘n Play auto or the Fisher Price swings that swing in different directions and speeds (my daughter loved the Snug-a-puppy one). Don’t waste your money on the Mama Roo.

3. Medela breast pump all the way! And buy/ register for extra pumping bottles and coolers. We also really loved the Dr. Brown’s bottles for when she had to take a bottle. Don’t let the amount of pieces scare you- it’s no big deal and super easy to wash. Also loved the Dr. Brown’s bottle warmer for warming her bottles of breastmilk. And don’t forget a bottle drying rack! We have the munchkin one from Target.

4. Sleep sacks!!! These saved our lives.

5. We had a bedside bassinet that she slept in until she was about five months old. It was one I just bought from a garage sale and it worked perfectly for what we needed it for.

6. Sound machine/ projector is also a fav of ours! She listens to the ocean when she naps and at night while she sleeps :)

7. We love Pampers Swaddlers and also the Target brand diapers. My daughter has a sensitive bottom and after trying various sensitive wipes, Seventh Generation works best for her. :)

8. Motorola baby monitor from Target!

Also, this is just purely FYI. We have battled diaper rash for quite some time. We tried everything and it wasn’t until a pediatric hospitalist (that I work with) suggested mixing equal parts Eucerin healing ointment, baby Aquaphor, and the purple tube of Desitin. Greatest thing ever.. it cleared her right up. I just mixed it up in a little jar and it works like a charm. :)

Hi!!! I’m 33 weeks along and my spots on my face have gotten DARK! This is my second child, and with my first I didn’t notice they were darker until after she was born. They did get lighter after a few months, so I’m hoping they will this time around too! Maybe the same will happen for you?!

For gear, I’d recommend a pack n play. One that comes with a changing station, and a small bassinet/carrier. I have one by graco that we used for my first, and for the first few weeks she slept in the little carrier. Once she was too big for it we kept her in the pack n play in our room until we transitioned her to the crib. They’re pretty versatile and we still have used it for vacations and what not. Good luck!!! :)

And we also really loved the Chicco Bravo travel system for car seat and strolled!!! :)

Oh, sorry I forgot a few things. I know you talked about struggling quite a bit to breastfeed with Brooke. Seriously, there are some amazing support groups on Facebook. Without them I would not have made it with my first. Dairy Queen’s and Milky Mamas are my two favorite. Also, while you’re still in the hospital make sure you have a lactation consultant come to your room each day. Ask her if there are any local support groups where you can go to get help (these are almost always free and run by certified lactation consultants!)

Soma has incredible nursing bras. You can get fitted in store and then they can order the nursing version of those bras and have them sent directly to your house.

And obviously, fed is best- just wanted to pass those tidbits along.

My biggest suggestion and life saver is the fisher price rock and play and yes get the one that rocks automatically. It is the BEST thing for newborns and my daughter slept in it until she was 5 months or could roll in it. I swear that’s why she slept so good!! I also loved my solly baby wrap and the swaddles that you can Velcro to keep them nice and snug. ?

Reply

My biggest recommendation is a good quality wrap like a Moby or a Solly wrap! You can hold baby and have your hands free to make food/play with the bigger kiddos!

Reply

I’m 37 weeks with my 4th right now and have been busy unpacking and setting everything up. I agree with the pack and play for your room. My kids slept with us until 2 months, since I’m a really light sleeper and that’s about when they started sleeping through the night. This swing was a lifesaver for us https://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Deluxe-Take-Along-Swing/dp/B00NFETGLC/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1501735866&sr=8-1&keywords=Fisher%2Bprice%2Btravel%2Bswing&th=1. It’s super light and easy to pack around and it has the option to be stationary as a seat for the baby. I have a Solly wrap and an Ergo carrier. I love the Solly for when they’re newborns and the Ergo for when they get a little bigger. The Ergo does have a learning curve to it, but once I figured it out, I loved it. Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy!

-No need for the dock-a-tot! Once baby can roll you won’t need it and it makes transitioning to sleep without it much harder.
-Velcro swaddles are the bomb.
-Loved my owlet with my first babe. (Bet they’d send you a free one)
-Don’t get a wifi monitor!!! We got one so my husband and I could see babe from our phones. Thought we were fine because it was password protected but mine was hacked :( not sure for how long but someone was watching me breastfeed. Talk about awful. Just avoid wifi monitors. Not worth it.

My husband bought me a super awesome pump, but I didn’t last longer than three weeks (with Baby #1) and one week (with Baby #2), so I might have one you could have, if you’re interested. I’ve been meaning to sell it for about um… 19 months now.

Reply

My baby is 9 months and these are the main things I’d recommend:
– solly wrap. Love love loved mine. I live in a big city and didn’t start using a stroller until he was 4 months old. Carried him everywhere.
– Ergo 360. My husband wore him that way with an infant insert and now I use it all the time, especially outward facing
– baby Bjorn bouncy chair. I borrowed this and it saved my sanity. So good for awake time, while I showered, cooked, etc…
Other than that, I just made do with most other things. I do know the dock a tot, along with rock and plays and swings aren’t safe for sleeping, according to the AAP (I would look it up). I used a bassinet in our room for the first 5 months then transitioned him to a crib. He slept many naps as a newborn in the baby carrier and his stroller later on.
So excited for you!

We have a small house and didn’t want to buy too much stuff for our baby (who is now 10 months!) so I feel ya on this. We set up her pack n play in our bedroom and used the bassinet feature on top for the first 8 weeks. She only spent 4 weeks in our room and then we moved the whole thing into the nursery (but kept the doors open between us) and then moved her to the crib after 8 total weeks. She was not phased at all! She has been an exceptional sleeper, though, so this route might be on the brief side for most. I think everyone slept better this way rather than hearing every single sound the baby made all night. (I was hyper sensitive!)

Also, I have used the heck out of my Infantino baby carrier because my baby never liked to be set down for the first 3 months and that was a tough time. I tried on an Ergo the other day and it was definitely nice but almost too big and bulky in my opinion. It also seemed more difficult to get a baby in and out of. I think I would like to learn how to use a sling for those first 6 weeks or so when the baby is still tiny (whenever we have another). Maybe it would be helpful to try some carriers on and practice getting a doll in and out of to see how it feels and works and then decide. Or maybe that is too much effort and you can just pick one! My mom has always had a highchair that attached to the kitchen table/island instead of a regular chair that took up soo much space. https://www.target.com/p/chicco-caddy-hook-on-baby-high-chair/-/A-15508638#lnk=sametab
Let me know what you think! We always put a chair underneath otherwise it looks odd when your baby is just hanging in mid air! Haha!

Your insurance may cover a breast pump! I love a backpack diaper bag- I’ve gone through 3 diaper bags and finally got a backpack. My baby loves the swing. Sadly he doesn’t like the Dock a Tot because it’s too hot for him. I have the Ergo 360 and LOVE it! So many ways you can use it. I’ve had the Moby and Solly wrap and I’m just dumb with wraps, lol. Never feel secure enough.

We planned for our son to sleep in the pack & play bassinet in our room for 6-8 weeks before we transitioned him to the crib in his room. The first night home our dog decided it would be way too exciting to share the bedroom with the baby, and we tucked in little man in the mamaroo in the living room adjacent to our bedroom. It ended up being the best arrangement for everyone. Little man slept in the mamaroo for naps and at night until he was 8-10 weeks when we transitioned him to the crib. Look into the mamaroo! We loved that it had an aux hookup. We put a white noise soundtrack on an old iPod and little man slept with that same soundtrack playing (later through a docking station/speakers) until he was 2!

We bought a lot second hand: baby bjorn, fabric wrap carrier (can’t remember the brand), pack & play, bouncer, car seat stroller base, crib and dresser, jogging stroller…. We bought our umbrella stroller, mamaroo, and car seats new. We were gifted the crib mattress, most blankets/bedding/sleep sacks, and pump.

Borrow and buy second hand what you can!

Every kid and family are different, especially with this being the third in the house! The things I couldn’t live without when mine was a newborn (and that I’ll be retrying/using for #2) include:
– Rock n’ Play: she slept in this in our room until 10 weeks, then moved to her crib in her room…no problems
– Halo velcro swaddles: she loved to be swaddled and we did this until she could roll over (around 3 months)
– Sound machine: we have a cheap Homedics one that is still going strong at 19 months. Now it’s her nightime “music” and she turns it on before she goes to bed!
– Baby wrap/carrier: great if you are chasing after other kids or if you have a kiddo that likes to cuddle like mine did. I did a Solly and Woven wrap when she was tiny, and a Tula when she got older.
– Pump: I got a Medela PISA through insurance and it was fine, but I’ve heard great things about the Spectra and will probably get it for my second.
– Sleep gowns/sleep sacks: so much easier for middle of night diaper changes!

Less is more! Get a bassinet or other mobile crib that you can wheel around and a boppy. Those were the two things that were lifesavers for me. And, of course, a good car seat/stroller combo. As the baby gets older, you can figure out what you want/need but in the beginning, I’d recommend keeping it light so you don’t feel overwhelmed.

Hope you don’t mind some ideas from Germay (I already recognized that in the US toys and stuff are different :D)…

and a baby carrier … look for a really good one!

What should the DockATot be for? I loved this https://www.amazon.de/babybay-BB-100112-Original-wei%C3%9F-lackiert/dp/B007NZHY04/ref=lp_3969035031_1_1?s=baby&ie=UTF8&qid=1501764731&sr=1-1 simply because you can move it around. From the kitchen to the bedroom. ;)

All the best for you, Janae!

Rock n play and Magic Merlin sleepsuit were LIFE SAVING. I was super skeptical about the merlin sleepsuit and it looks ridiculous but really did work. I couldn’t bite the bullet on the dock-a-tot but I heard great things from others who used it. And the medela breast pump and I spent a LOT of time together, it worked great and I got it through insurance.

Reply

I had a c-section with both of mine so they stayed in our room until I could walk up and down the stairs. We had a Graco pack in play and it worked great as a bed/play area and we could move it around to where ever we needed it to be. Get some Halo Swaddlers those were miracle workers for getting both of mine to sleep.

Hi Janae! Loving all of these comments! I have a 6 month old and breastfeeding.

So I have been seeing a lot of suggestions for the Rock n Play. We do not have one bc we didn’t know about them but at our pediatrician appt the dr always checks the baby’s head for flat spots and shape which is all good thankfully but she made a comment that she can always tell what babies spend a lot of time in rock n plays because it’s such a cocoon they dont get to move their heads and end up having to wear the cranial helmet to correct flatness/head shape/etc Not saying this happens to them all but thought that was interesting as she has seen that correlation!! She thinks the cranial companies and rock n plays are working together☺️

Our son currently sleeps in a pack n play beside our bed but we are transitioning to the crib this weekend. We’ll see how that goes!

We have the BOB running stroller. It is awesome! I would highly recommend the Limerick PJ breast pump. I started out with the insurance covered medela and it was terrible. The plastic hurt my boobs. The Limerick is softer and is hospital grade so works much faster. Can get what I need in just a few mins. You can find it on amazon?

Good luck!!

Pampers swaddlers diapers worked great for us. Though I recommend trying different brands if there is diaper rash or anything else.

Swaddle blankets – SwaddleMe, Halo sleepsack, Aden and Anais muslin blankets. Ours really hated swaddles so we kept trying different ones to prevent break outs.

I see a lot of recs for the Rock N Play and I think it’s great. Just wanted to add that mine would never sleep in hers, so every baby does their own thing and you may have to try something else. She didn’t sleep but she loved chilling in it swatting at toys above it.

Pack n Play with bassinet was amazing. I don’t think you need the one with the napper or diaper change station.

Playmat or blankets for tummy time. Ours loved the Fischer Price kick n play piano one.

Boppy or My Breast Friend pillow. We also liked the Boppy Newborn Lounger.

I’ve done a bassinet but we also have a mini crib and I’m thinking of doing that because I have 3 older boys who will probably be too curious with a bassinet (think rocking and riding).I usually move the babies out of my room around 3 months. Whenever the wake up call goes down to once or twice a night. My oldest two have shared a room since babyhood and the older one always slept through his bro. I think all insurances are required to cover a breast pump now. I’m trying to decide between the Medela Pump in Style or Sonata or something else. I’ve never had one and I’m pregnant with my 4th. Let me know what you find. Other than that I love swaddle blankets and a good (backpack style diaper bag because you need your hands with 3 little people) and some cute clothes and you should be set. Oh also I love the Solly baby wrap for under 6 months and the Ergo for over.

Reply

My favorites when I had Ben: Rock and Play for sure!! Medela pump (I forgot exactly which one — I had the backpack version because I always carry so many bags, ha!), a hand-pump as a backup (lifesaver — also extra tubing for the electric!), and I loved the Moby wrap. :) He stayed in our room for the first 9 months or so, though I think if we have another we’ll keep him/her in there for the first year.

Reply

I also get sunspots (freckles) when I am pregnant! I don’t get them any other time, and I used to think they were pretty cute… now I think they make my skin look old… but I AM 7 years older than I was the first time I had a kid, and that makes a difference too. ;)
As far as baby sleeping in my room. No. No. No. And No. I realize that not everyone has a home that permits separating baby from adults, but if a kid is in my room, I am not sleeping… and Mama needs her sleep! So for us the baby has always had his/her own room. THIS time around, we don’t want to move any kids to the downstairs bedrooms so we are putting the newborn in with the older brother (6) and having the two girls (5 and 3) share a room… We’ll see how that goes, finger’s crossed.
For all baby things, I really don’t go pricey or fancy. I also don’t like bulky furniture so we’ve done this ikea crib that becomes a toddler bed http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20248571/ from the time the baby was a newborn. No bassinets. No additional stuff. I have a friend who has a big laundry basket and would have her babies sleep in that until they were about 4 months old.. so you really don’t have to spend the cash unless you want to. Babies aren’t that picky.
I also used this pillow for the baby to sleep in, nap in around the house while I am doing stuff. I love it, but there are various schools of thought about their safety. My newborns have never had any issues. you can get it less expensively at other places. ://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/boppy-lounger/?catalogId=97&sku=8059706&cm_ven=PLA&cm_cat=Google&cm_pla=Blankets%20%26%20Essentials%20%3E%20Nursing%20%26%20Feeding%20Essentials&kwid=productads-adid^175992272781-device^c-plaid^364152817847-sku^8059706-adType^PLA&gclid=EAIaIQobChMInKbtkpe71QIVDGZ-Ch3pYQTKEAYYASABEgK7g_D_BwE&cm_ite=[[BP]%20[PLA]%20[Shopping]%20-%20Non-Brand%20Desktop]
For a carseat I LOVE the Chicco Keyfit 30. I am only sad I have to buy a new one because they only last 5 yrs. There is a big push for carseats that convert, but check out the consumer reports and safety ratings for this one. It is great. I got the travel system (with stroller) 7 years ago and STILL use that thing. It is durable and I love it. It’s also survived three very active kids, so… https://www.amazon.com/Chicco-Keyfit-Infant-Seat-Lilla/dp/B00MS9VTG0/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1501767491&sr=8-1&keywords=chicco%2Bkeyfit%2B30&th=1
But the BEST thing to do is see if some of your friends have these items for their kids and try them out before investing. Happily you live in Utah and there should be no shortage of baby gear to borrow or babies to borrow to try them out!
Good luck!
PS- We sometimes have a hard time picking names for kids and we decided that baby #4 will be Ezra Grant Wilson. We are actually both happy with the name.

We went rock n play, pac n play, crib. I teach safe sleep and frankly I don’t see how dockatot is safe?! But I have no experience with them. I love my ergo baby carrier as well as the baby k’tan. Use YouTube to figure out how to wear baby if you struggle. Actually just YouTube everything. That’s my parenting style :)

Hi! I just had a baby in Jan, so these things are fresh in my mind ;). We had the baby sleep in our room until he was 4 months, and we used the graco pack n play with newborn inserts. So it’s basically a pack n play with a bassinet and a changing table that attach on top, and it was PERFECT. And then when he outgrew the bassinet, we just took the inserts off and use the pack n play for him to sleep in when we travel. But you could also have your baby sleep in the pack n play in Brooke’s room! And I loved the changing table insert because it made nighttime diaper changes a breeze (I didn’t even have to get out of bed!). I would also recommend a Fisher Price play mat that lights up and plays music. We used it for tummy time from day one, but it’s proven to be great for every stage so far. As a newborn he loved to lay on his back and watch the lights, and then as he’s gotten older he actually reaches up and plays with the things that hang from it. It’s been a lifesaver! As for a pump, since you travel a lot I would recommend the Medela Freestyle, which is a battery operated pump. I use a medela pump at work that plugs into the wall, and it’s awesome, but I bought a battery operated one for traveling because it was so hard to find outlets in airports, bathrooms, etc. And on long trips I can just pump in the front seat so we don’t have to stop! It’s definitely worth the money. Lastly, I bought the Medela steaming bags to sterilize bottles, pump parts, and toys. They are so worth the money and such a time saver!!!!

I can’t wait to hear the name!!!! :)

I haven’t read all the comments so if this is a repeat, I apologize. About the pump: ask your doctor for a prescription, and take it to a medical supply store- you should be able to get a pump for a much discounted price (a prescription medical device price). And, get a Medela- they are a workhorse of a pump. I used mine through 2 kids, pumping 2x day for 9 months (until they were 1). Then, I donated it and someone else just replaced all the parts and is likely still using it.

I can totally relate to feeling lost about baby gear! I’m 38 weeks along with baby #1 right now and it’s the first baby in our family in a loooong time, so everyone was a bit out of the loop!

We are doing a cosleeper (it’s like a side-car attachment to the bed so she won’t be IN the bed with us) because a friend offered it for free, for the first few months (mainly for the convenience of night-feeding), and then moving her to a 4 in 1 crib.

Another friend gave me a Blooming Bath (https://www.bloomingbath.com/blooming-bath-baby-bath.html) which apparently makes for good photo ops in addition to being amazing :)

We got a Graco Playpen for visiting family (it collapses super easy and I’m thinking will be a good nap situation when we visit other people). https://www.amazon.com/Graco-Pack-Play-Playard-Aspery/dp/B00LVMSU0S/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1501771961&sr=8-1&keywords=graco+playpen

My brother and his fiance bought us the Graco Click Connect Infant Car seat. I got my mom and dad each their own base for mother’s/father’s day this year so they can easily drive with baby, too! And they got us the stroller that you can just click the car seat in. No idea how well the stroller does yet but hopefully I’ll find out soon. We still don’t have a jogging stroller yet though and it’s bugging me! https://www.amazon.com/Graco-SnugRide-Connect-Infant-Glacier/dp/B01BGVLGFE/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1501771991&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=graco%2Bclick%2Bconnect%2Bcar%2Bseat&th=1

It also makes me feel WAY better about not having a set “nursery.” We are renting a place that came fully furnished (only here until next April) and there’s no way to set up a dedicated baby room so we’ve made do with what we have…but it does make it hard when the internet/Pinterest keeps showing all those nursery pics!

My baby slept in a Rock N Play for about 3.5 months (right beside my bed where most nights I literally fell asleep touching her bed haha), then she slept in a Pack N Play (also in our bedroom) for about 6 months after that. Then she moved up to her “big girl room” and has done great ever since. The biggest reason she stayed in our room is that her room is upstairs and our room is downstairs so it obviously made sense to keep her close for nighttime feedings. Of course as time went on it was hard for me to imagine her bein so far away and then those AAP recommendations came out about having the baby in your room for at least 6 months so that was good enough for me. ;) She was never really a fan of swaddling, and she was born in the middle of August so she just slept in regular long sleeve jammies until it started getting cool weather, and then I had a couple different fleece sleep sacks for her. Once it got too hot for fleece sleep sacks I got her a knit one and she still sleeps in that.

We used the Pack N Play bassinet insert in our room for the first 4 weeks. My little guy is a super light sleeper and our tossing and turning/ my husband’s snoring kept waking him up. We did try to do naps in the crib as often as possible to get him used to it, but my son wasn’t the greatest napper.
Our baby monitor is a video monitor and even shows his room temperature so when I woke up a thousand times worrying it was super easy to just check him out on the monitor and see that he was just fine.
The Auto Rock n Play was a lifesaver for us. It was the only way my son would nap for basically the first 6 months. You can turn on the rocking feature or leave it stationary and ours had the option to play music as well. He had terrible reflux so it was also helpful because it kept his head elevated.
Nose Frida FOR SURE! They look disgusting, but I promise they work and we’ve never had any yucky mishaps.
We used the Chico Keyfit30 travel system. I loved the car seat and how easy it was to snap in and out of the base in each of our cars. I wasn’t a fan of the stroller though. The structure seemed to get warped and it started pulling to one side really early on. You can buy an attachment piece for a BOB jogging stroller (if you have one) that the carrier clicks right into–highly recommend that once you get the okay from your doctor and baby’s head/neck are stable enough.
Sound machine is really helpful for sleep.
Play mat for tummy time or just hanging out.
My guy unfortunately hated the infant carriers–he isn’t a snuggler and doesn’t like to be hot, so the combination just made him unhappy. We tried the Baby K’tan briefly and I really liked it. Youtube was a great resource for figuring out how to use it.
A backpack style diaper bag was wonderful because it allowed me to have both hands free. I have the JuJube BFF–pricey, but worth it in my opinion.

Our daughter stayed in our room until she was close to 5 months (I think)…I know that I had said I wanted to transition her to her room before I went back to work (and I took about 4 months of maternity leave), but that didn’t happen. It was harder for me to separate myself from her…once we finally put her in her room at night, I slept horribly fearing I wouldn’t hear her if she woke up, but she was absolutely fine.

We didn’t get a bassinet, b/c I honestly thought it was a waste of money for a child to use for such a short amount of time (those things can be EXPENSIVE!). We used a pack and play (with the additional insert to have her higher up) in our room and its something we still use on vacations, so definitely worth it. Other items we loved…the Halo Sleepsack, Pampers diapers and wipes, the Medela pump, bottles and microwaveable sterilizing bags, Bobby pillow, Lansinoh nipple cream, Honest Company Healing Balm (cures everything super quick from diaper rash to eczema)…can’t think of anything else right now.

Hope this helps!!

We bought a wooden bassinet on a facebook mom swap group and it is/was great! We just moved Hannah into her crib in her room the other night though- she’s 3 months. it was a little sooner than planned but our peanut outgrew the bassinet quick. I know a lot of people just used a pack and play in their room instead of a bassinet, might be a good multi use option as when she gets bigger you can/will still need/use a pack and play.

Hannah’s loves—> Soothe & Glow giraffe gets her to sleep every night (http://amzn.to/2hr3ptM), Boppy newborn lounger- this thing is so great and she LOVES laying on it all the time. She will lay on it next to me on the couch while I pump etc. (http://amzn.to/2v0tx3s), Wubanub she loves because she can hold onto the duck or animal and helps keep pacifier in too (http://amzn.to/2v29nEx)

I just had a baby three weeks ago and these are the things I absolutely recommend for newborns:

Fisher Price Rock n Play
Gracco Pack n Play with changing pad and bouncer
Swing
Swaddle blankets
My Brest friend or boppy if nursing
Spectra 2 or Medela breast pump and kiind twist bags
Dr. Browns bottles
Boppy lounger pillow
We also got the Graco travel system called Bravo. It has the car seat and stroller.

I did a post on my top 10 favorite baby items, many of them were already mentioned by others on this thread which I think shows how useful they are! Hope it help you!! And I think you’ll be amazed at how easily you remember what to do with a baby even though its been 5 years! Best of luck to you!

Your IKEA has candy?!?!??! Ours here in MI DOES NOT! so sad!
Also, my son is 14 so I really would have no clue as to what to tell you to get but if I did it again, I would agree that keeping it simple is the best! They don’t need 10 of everything. Just love and lots of time for laundry! :)
A heated wipe warmer is great when I watch my cousin’s baby twin girls. They keep smiling through the frequent diaper changes!

If you get NOTHING else … get the Fisher Price Rock n Play (the automatic one). You will not regret it.

SOLLY Baby Wrap. No contest.

Wubbanub Pacifiers … absolutely couldn’t live without them.

Baby #1 slept in our room until 6 months. Baby #2 slept in our room until 4 months and then we transferred him to his crib in his room.

I recommend renting a pump from the hospital. Much better than any pump I ever owned!

Reply

Get a clip for the pacifier so that it’s always attached to her. Seriously, my son is still using the pacifiers he got when he came home from the hospital and he’s 19 months old, but we always had them clipped to him, so they never got lost. That said, if she’s a thumb sucker/finger sucker instead, a pacifier clip won’t do you any good…

Also, I’d recommend a sleep sack that opens from the bottom (like a zipper). That way you don’t have to take the sleep sack all the way off to change a diaper in the middle of the night.

My son was about 5 months adjusted when he moved to his own room. I think the hubby would have been happy to move him sooner, but I refused to move him until we had blinds on his window so he wouldn’t wake up to the sun at 3am…

Oh, and my diaper bag closes with magnets. I hate it. If you overpack at all, all of your stuff falls out, usually at an exciting time like walking down the aisle of an airplane. Get a diaper bag that will stay closed, with a zipper or a snap or a buckle or a tie. Anything but a magnet…

My baby is still in me :) but I am a NICU nurse, so I guess I have some helpful advice to give. First off, I have to caution AGAINST the DockaTot… we’ve had a couple meetings at work regarding the safety of it, and many healthcare providers have deemed it unsafe. I’d really research it and talk it over with your pediatrician before purchasing.
I’ll also echo some above commenters on getting a prescription for a pump.
Oh, and I have been getting those darkening of sunspots, too. Lucky me, mine is in my “mustache” area! Ugh. SPF helps a bunch, but I feel like those hormones have the last say.

It had been 4 years since I’d had a babe and I was so worried about what I NEEDED. But in reality it’s just bottles, diapers, and onesies. The one thing I did get that I LOVED was a rock ‘n play. They even have ones that rock in their own and it was so awesome for the first few months!! He slept like a dream in it. I’m also a fan of a video monitor with 2 way sound you can watch from your phone. Game changer!

Reply

I didn’t use a carrier with my first because I just held her all the time but when my second was on the way, I felt a little panicky about how I was going to hold/bond with her while chasing a toddler and just being more out and about this time around. I bought a Moby wrap because I liked that for the newborn stage it keeps them nice and snuggled/secure without putting strain on their baby hips/pelvis and oh my goodness it was a GAME CHANGER!!!! I so wish I had used one with my first! The wrapping instructions can seem overwhelming at first but you catch on so quickly and it is beyond amazing. The Moby material was a little heavy for me so if we ever have another baby I would order the Solly wrap (www.sollybaby.com) since it’s the same wrap concept but much more breathable fabric (and they have so many cute patterns ☺️). My friends who have the Solly rave about them! Happy nesting!

You are looking grrrreat! Love the red.

Baxton stayed in our room for 4.5 months (until he got too long for his bassinet), then we switched him to his own room across the hall.

Bassinet: I totally recommend this for a snuggle baby from day 1. Ours slept in it “like a baby” through the night except for one wake up, but for naps slept in a big crib for 15-20 minutes. Then when we moved him to his crib when he was two long, he woke up multiple times in the night. I needed a bigger bassinet!

Baby Bjorn is always a classic. We had two, which was great with two parents so we didn’t have to keep adjusting..

Car seat – Clek Foonf. One of the few things I bought new, but the safety and security for peace of mind was totally worth it.

Favorite diapers were BumGenius Organic cloth diapers. By 10 months of diaper buying you hve broken even. He wore the same diapers from the first week until potty trained at 2.5, and then I resold them on eBay for 75% of my purchase price. And no diaper rashes – EVER.

My favorite pump was tree hospital grade one that I rented from the local hospital. It was seriously good!

Def check your insurance to see if your insurance will cover your breast pump! Sometimes they are awesome like a medela double electric, sometimes they are just single handpumps. Mine even came with free milk bags. I just called my insurance co and they would send them.

Loved our Ergo baby. Diaper bag not necessary but def get a bag that’s crossbody or a backpack to keep your hands free and out of the way.

Two things that I still use with my 4yo:
1. sound machine. We love this one. https://www.amazon.com/Cloud-b-7303-Z8-Sleep-sheep/dp/B00IABHYV4/ref=sr_1_4_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1501783545&sr=8-4&keywords=sleep+sheep
2. baby monitor. I like that I can still see what my 4yo is up to. https://www.amazon.com/Motorola-MBP36-Wireless-Monitor-withColor/dp/B004VL2VRO/ref=sr_1_5_s_it?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1501783655&sr=1-5&keywords=motorola%2Bbaby%2Bmonitor&th=1

Good luck! I love babies and can’t seem to have any more now so I’m living vicariously through your blog!

We kept babies in our bedroom in a pack n play for the first few months and then right into a crib in his/her room. Bassinets can only be used for such a short time, but pack n plays can be used for years when traveling or for naps, etc. Big fan of the pack n play! One item I recommend to all moms is the boppy infant longer. Love it! Didn’t have one for my first, but got so much use out of it with babies 2 through 4. It was so nice to have a comfy little spot to put the baby down that was easy to move from room to room.

Looks like you already have tons of awesome suggestions! But baby stuff is super fun so I’m going to leave some recommendations anyway ;)

-First off, I’m seeing a ton of recommendations for a pack-and-play and I definitely agree! I also really liked our Moses bed when my daughter was a babe. That said, I ended up co-sleeping with her and she is now three and will NOT get out of my bed. It’s become a ginormous challenge. But, the newborn snuggles were amazing and it made nursing SO much easier having her right next to me at night so I guess everything is a trade off. I feel like if you co-sleep but get them out of your bed by like 6-8 months you probably won’t have the same struggles I am currently facing. ;)

-Carrier- I LOVED having a wrap carrier when my daughter was a newborn… Baby K’Tan and Moby wrap were my favorites and you can get both at Target I believe. I also could not have survived without my Tula carrier. And they come in super fun prints which just makes me really happy.

-Pump- Medela InStyle

-Car seat- I had a Chicco KeyFit 30 and liked it. I would just make sure you get one that clicks in and out of a base so you don’t have to take the baby out of the car seat every time you get out of the car. I would also plan to get more than one base- one for your car, one for Andrew’s, etc. If you’re in the market for a new stroller, it’s also really helpful to get a stroller that matches your car seat so you can simply click the car seat out of the car and into the stroller (if that makes sense?). Super convenient. And usually, those strollers will then transform into a regular seated stroller when baby gets a little older.

**Sorry, I don’t know any of the technical words so hopefully this all makes sense! Just trying to remember what worked best for me! ;)

Other things:
-Swaddle blankets (The muslin ones from aden + anais are like dream fabric. I would actually recommend any and all of their products).
-Nursing pillow (Boppy)- made nursing SO much easier
-Baby swing = lifesaver to get anything done
-Nursing bra, nursing pads, nipple cream
-Diaper rash cream (you can find homemade brands at healthfood stores… Those were always my fave. But Badger balm makes this thing called Baby Balm… It’s amazing. Definitely get some.

Hope this helps! So excited for you guys! <3

My little one is only 1 month old, so I’m no expert but here are some of things we are so glad we invested in. The BOB stroller, right now we are using it with an infant carseat adapter and it works great for our walks on all surfaces and it will transition nicely once she is old enough and I’m ready to get back to running. The rock n’ play is great for day time sleeping, but because of safety concerns with overnight sleeping and AAP guidelines (I’m an over-paranoid Pediatric RN) we bought the fisher price soothing motion bassinet and our little girl has slept great in it right next to our bed (we tried the pack n’ play but she wasn’t a fan). We love our swaddle me swaddles, boppy, and sound machine. Oh and she is mostly breastfed, but the only bottle she will take for us is the MAM. You look great! Good luck figuring out what items will work best for you and your family!

When my babies (now teens) were babies, my husband and I had a *tiny* bedroom, so a crib didn’t fit. We used a bassinet, which we kept right next to the bed on my side – because that’s the only place it fit – but it turned out to be THE BEST for nursing. When baby woke up to eat, I’d roll over, pluck baby out of the bassinet, nurse, and put baby back into the bassinet, all without turning on the lights or even getting out of bed. I even kept a few diapers and some hand sanitizer right by the bed, so if baby was only wet I could even take care of that without getting out of bed (poops, of course, required lights and not being in my bed!) The bassinet is only safe until they’re big enough to roll over, then we had to move them into a crib in the kids’ room, but this worked really well when they were small and nursing frequently.

If I were you I’d keep the new baby in your room, first in a bassinet and then a crib, until she sleeps well enough that Brooke won’t be disturbed all night. So excited for you! Happy planning!

I have a 14 month old girl. Loved the Dockatot, Uppababy Cruz and Spectra Pump :). I bought too much stuff before she came…I wish I would have waited to see what her personality was and what I still needed.

I have a 6-week-old daughter and a 4.5-year-old daughter. So much has changed baby gear wise in just a few years! Also you should totally nest away right now! By the third tri I was so exhausted I couldn’t nest.
Room sharing wise, the AAP recommends that baby sleep in your room for first six months, preferably a year. There are lower rates of SIDS when room sharing. I definitely plan on having baby sleep with us for at least that six month timeframe. Search for “AAP safe sleep recommendations” to read more. We bed share following Dr. James McKenna’s guidelines (also really good to read about). I bought something similar to dockatot but it’s made with organic/natural materials (brand is Askr & Embla). We’ve also tried the rock and play but baby girl isn’t super interested.
Carrier wise I’m loving the Tula “free-to-grow” as you don’t have to use an infant insert, less sweaty all around!
We opt for a convertible car seat from the start rather than a bucket style infant carrier. The diono radian is awesome as it’s super slim and is good from 5-120lbs.
Stroller wise we got an Uppababy Cruz. Spendy but it drives sooooo smoothlyand has a huge basket underneath. It also has a kickback board that the 4.5yo can ride on the back, though perhaps that wouldn’t be great when you have two older kiddos?
Bottle wise- Comotomo brand were the only big sis would take so that’s what we’re using for little sis.
Good luck! Looking forward to seeing what you end up with.

SO many awesome suggestions in these comments! I have a 3 month old and 4 year old twins. My absolute favorite item has been the Owlet Baby Monitor. Seriously, I love it! I had serious anxiety about SIDS with my twins, so when the Owlet monitor came out I knew I had to have it with our next child. It has brought me so much peace of mind! Here’s the link: http://www.owletcare.com/
Other favorites: nose freida and saline drops for congestion, and Aiden & Anais swaddle blankets (I tie 2 corners of the blanket together then put it around my neck to use as a nursing cover too!). We also use the pack n play for the first 6 months. Oh and depending on your health insurance, a pump may be covered by them. Good luck, this is such an exciting time!

Janae, you look amazing! I am 31 weeks pregnant with baby #5. We thought we were done with 4, so I got rid of ALL my baby gear and here we are!:) I second a lot of what others have suggested. For diaper rash prevention, my pediatrician (who happens to be my uncle) always recommends using a blow dry to dry their bum after each diaper change. We hardly ever had any problems with rashes. Always apply any diaper cream only after the bum has been blow dried. The babies seem to really like it too! I was hoping to get a free pump through the ACA, but our plan isn’t compliant and we were “grandfathered” in, so I don’t qualify. I have also heard from nursing friends to steer clear of the baby wraps that are only made from fabric that you wrap around you. They have seen a lot of infant deaths with those. Good luck with your last months of pregnancy!

Like most of the comments above. My 4 mo currently sleeps in a bassinet that fits into his pack and play. We use a Joie pack and play that isn’t exactly the most portable (a bit on the heavy side) but I find it stable enough for everyday use and it comes with a changing top that folds away which helps save space.

We use a chimparoo carrier (that can also be used from newborn). I find that it’s a fair bit bigger than other SSCs like the Tula. But the baby likes it and I find it comfortable enough.

The other thing that we found useful for the newborn was this sleeping device called a cocoonababy. It is slightly pricey and can’t be used for very long. But if you’re able to find it secondhand… The baby slept really well in it.

I currently use a Korean pump, I don’t know if you’ll be able to find it in the states. But if you can. Its called the spectra S9+. It’s really light, portable and quiet.

I was obsessed with sleep and that’s how I found the Love to Dream swaddles. They are so amazing and I believe they are the reason my baby slept though the night at six weeks. They allow the baby to self smooth with hands in their mouths while still being swaddled. With my first baby I found that the Velcro swaddles weren’t strong enough and were much less effective after a few times in the wash. Love to Dream is an Australian brand and when my baby was born we received a lambs skin which is the traditional Australian baby gift. When my baby cried we would lay her on the lamb skin and she would curl her little hands into it and immediately calm which is why I think Australians know a lot about baby gear! Haha.

I saw this article posted on FB a few weeks ago about the DockATot. I know you can may your own informed decision, but may want to read this too. Just wanted to share.

So glad you are feeling better! I craved Diet Coke throughout my pregancyy and pebble ice (but never gave into it). Gosh, the combination still sounds good to me! I also bought bags of pebble ice from Chick Fil A (they even sold it to me through the drive through one more when I was desperate at 7:30am).

Being that I just had a baby last week, I’m no expert, but here’s what helped us survive her first week of life:

– Swaddle Me velcro swaddles: we had to keep getting the nurses in the hospital to swaddle her because she was a Houdini. My husband went out the next day and bought these so we didn’t look like total newbie parents.
– Ollie Swaddle: so expensive, but by far the EASIEST and softest swaddle there is and my favorite. She hates having her arms swaddled (who wouldn’t?) and this allows us to swaddle the rest of her body
– Pampers Swaddlers diapers: I hate the chemicals in them, but they are the only ones we’ve found that are small enough to fit her at this age. The sensitive ones have more of a smell to them, which bothers me, so I prefer the regular.
– Dock a Tot: yes love love love! Our favorite product so far. She takes supervised naps in this and it’s just her favorite spot to chill while we chat with her and read to her on the sofa.. She calms down as soon as she’s in it. We also love that my husband and I can hang out in bed with her in the dock in the mornings (one of us always awake). It’s my favorite ritual.
– Gerber onesies and side snap tee shirts. By far the most economical choice so it doesn’t kill me when she spits up breast milk on them and the fabric is so stretchy.
– Spectra pump: I love mine. Check out Amazon reviews
– Gerber prefold diapers for burp clothes. We have these stashed all over the house!
– Huggies Clutch and Go wipe dispenser (can get at Target or even the grocery store!). These are 10x easier and better than the plastic box dispensers. I own 5 of them and have them all over my house and in the diaper bag. They keep my favorite wipes, Water Wipes nice and moist.
– We chose the Uppababy Vista stroller and are absolutely in love. She loves riding in the bassinet that it comes with and we love how amazing it is to steer and push. You can use the bassinet for overnight sleep too and it would work well in your room with the stand. We aren’t quite as in love with the Uppababy Mesa carseat, but you can use the Chicco Keyfit carseat with the stroller as a different option.
– Nuna Sena travel crib. She sleeps in this in our room. The bassinet is comfy and airy and it’s super easy to set up and take down for travel. We bought the changing pad for it and love that as well. You can use it on the crib or just pop it on your bed for quick changes.
– Poopoose changing pad: We have this one in her nursery and for some reason, she NEVER cries in it. I think she feels super safe and secure in it. So diaper changes and outfit changes are a breeze.

Good luck with choosing what you want! It’s so overwhelming, but remember they just need a clean diaper, some milk in their tummies, and a lot of love. Everything else is icing on the cake.

We lived in a one bedroom apartment so Kid1 was in our room until he was 8 months old (then we moved to a 2 bedroom and he shared with my sister – his nanny – for 4 more months until we got our house). Kid2 was in our room for 3 months, then sharing with his brother. Kid3 was in our room for almost 5 months until he moved to his own room.

We only had a crib for Kid1&2 and that was fine. Someone gave us a bassinet for Kid3 and it was nice but definitely not necessary.

Ergo baby carrier all the way (I only one for Kid3 and really wished I’d had it for the first two).

I’ve only ever had a running stroller and one of those folding stick/umbrella strollers – but honestly, I used my running stroller 95% of the time…groceries, mall, neighborhood walks, not just running.

Wal-Mart or Target diapers for daytime, Huggies Ultra Supreme for night time. Wipes – Costco all the time.

I hate pumps with a passion – no advice for you there – I hated them all.

This idea for soothing fussy babies: https://www.babycenter.com/0_harvey-karps-happiest-baby-method-for-baby-sleep-and-soothin_10373838.bc Seriously a life saver with Kid3 and oh, how I wished I knew about it with Kid2!!

Insurance should pay for your pump – ask your OB about it! Rock n play and a sound machine. Life savers!!!

My older son stayed in the bed with me until he was about 15 weeks old. at which point i moved him to his crib in his room. My 9 month old slept in the bed with us until he was probably 17 or 18 weeks and then we moved him to the rock n play in his own room. We transitioned him to his crib once he could roll over. Had to go back to work six weeks after my older son was born and 8 weeks after my youngest was born so co-sleeping allowed me maximize my sleep as I could fall asleep while breastfeeding.

So happy for you!

Our baby stayed in our room for about….3 months I think it was. Then she moved way upstairs, but it was all good. She was our first, so baby showers supplied us with so much stuff. But in reality, I think less is more. Obviously the crib was a big one, we got the one that did the crib/toddler and big girl bed combo. Skipping all the obvious gear, I think the one piece I wish I could go back and have, would be one of those wrap things you wear around you to hold the baby. I mean seriously, to have them safely snuggled close and to have both hands free while you are out and about or around the house. I would have gotten many more things done, and been a lifesaver while out in public. The awkward door opening, dropping stuff, doing everything one handed…oh I so wish I would have had a baby wrap thing. I’m positive I would have loved it.

So it is a jogging stroller BUT it also was our only stroller and is fantastic! Baby jogger Summit X3. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B019W8WIU0/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1501961587&sr=8-1&keywords=summit+x3
It had a space underneath to throw a diaper bag/water bottles/whatever. My husband and I also run a ton and we just wanted to get one stroller. This, at the time, was around the price point of a Bob but I honestly think it’s superior. Right now it’s on sale on Amazon for $290, which is not nothing, I know, but it’s worth considering if you think you guys will be running with her a lot. It folds in half with one hand (I can do it by myself easily), has a front wheel lock on the handlebar (big plus for us since it was our only stroller so we didn’t want one with a fixed wheel), brakes, a bar you can buy to clip the car seat in for the first few months (which is easy to swap with the shade if you need to do so). I really can’t say enough good things about it!!! If there is a Buy Buy Baby near you, they always have one to test out. It’s been used almost every day for over three years, including training for two marathons and a number of half marathons, and hasn’t had one issue.

Jake slept in our room for five or six months. We used a pack n play. We have a cradle my husband made, which I’m hoping this new baby will use bc it takes up less space, but if I had to pick one, the pack n play because it was great for when his in town grandparents watched him or when we visited my parents.

I love the Boba wrap! I didn’t use it as much with my son because he was born in spring and it was always sooo hot! But I think I’ll use it more with her since she will be so little all winter.

Boudreaux’ Butt Paste was a miracle worker for whenever he had some diaper rash. And it cracks my son up to say it ;)

Oh! And if you are totally starting from scratch with baby stuff, we didn’t have a diaper bag so I bought a regular backpack. Personally, I never needed a cooler so buying a baby backpack just seemed like a waste and now I have a cute backpack for the gym, whatever moving forward even after I stop filling it with baby/little kid stuff. The only other thing they seem to have is the attached changing pad which I had and found pretty cheap. Just a thought :)

My daughter stayed in our room in a pack and play (the cradle we had was a 30 year old family hand me down and it didn’t sit flat so pack and play it was!) until 6 weeks old then we moved her to her crib in her downstairs bedroom. It was a bit rough having her on a different floor but a video monitor made it a lot easier! And I think I slept so much better not hearing ever little move she made during the night.

Huggies all day for diapers! Little movers & overnights are by far worth the money!

We used the Chicco click fit car seat. You can get extra bases for multiple cars and it makes it so much easier. Also you can get a stroller that it attaches too. I was ALSO able to get a bar that attached it to my Bob running stroller. THAT was the best!

Girl! You have so many comments on here, with so much great advice! I didn’t read everything, but in case someone didn’t already mention it, I learned with my third baby that my insurance will pay 100% for a new pump with each new baby! I can’t remember if I had to have a doc write a prescription for it or not (I will be looking into this asap again) but it was so great not to have that added expense last time and it was pretty nice. So excited for you guys! Love and miss you!

I agree with everyone else that the Rock n Play was a must have. We wouldn’t have gotten any sleep those first 2 months without it. Baby slept in it in our room for 2 months, then in the Pack n Play in our room until he was 5 months. When we put him in the pack in play, we started using the Halo swaddle sleep sacks. They were great to transition him from the RNP, then we were able to transition him in them to his crib, and now he just uses the sleep sack, not the swaddle.

Baby carrier: Boba wrap when they are still tiny (they love the tightness of it)… my baby was very colicky and I wore him in this for hours every night because it was the only way he would stop crying. Now I wear him forward facing in a Baby Bjorn (he is 10 months). He is one of those babies that loves being worn.

I am a big fan of my Britax carseat and the lightweight Britax stroller. They are known for being the safest on the market. We started with the Britax B-safe infant seat and recently transitioned to the Britax Boulevard convertible seat.

I love Pampers diapers but actually prefer Costco brand wipes over any others.

I have a Medela Pump in Style Advanced breastpump. I hate pumping, but work full time, and it does the job. I only use it at work (I leave it there) and exclusively nurse when I am at home. Luckily I respond well to the pump and pump enough where I do not need to pump at home to keep up with when I am away from baby. I also have a Medela manual pump just in case I get engorged and need to pump for relief. I read your pump on breastfeeding several week ago, and want to encourage you this time around. As you know, breastfeeding is hard but so worth it! I have breastfed through baby’s dairy intolerance, food allergies, multiple infections (one took me 3 months to fully clear), working full time, cracking/bleeding, and being sick several times. I am so glad I was able to stick with it. You can do it, too! You have an army of momma friends here to support you along the way.

Other things I would recommend: a sound machine, mommaroo (totally worth the money), and NoseFrida (it’s gross but works so well).

Janae! the Owlet Baby Monitor Smart Sock Two is definitely a must have! Being able to see my babies heart rate and oxygen level and know that they are doing okay is such a great feeling. And knowing that I will be alerted if they drop allows me to get some sleep. Totally worth it to me.

Shane started with Owlet before they launched a few years ago, email or text me and I’ll get you in touch with Shane and he can help you out. He mentioned you would also be a prime candidate right now to be on the beta testing of their new product coming out next year that will Be making huge difference in prenantal care. Let me know ASAP and I’ll get you guys in touch!

Love you girl and congrats on the new baby!

If you get to all 155+ comments…

First son was in our room for 4 months, second until 7 months, third is still in there at 6 months, but I am ready for him to move along.
I would just say borrow as much as you can and/or look for used items in local Facebook groups. So many items are fairly temporary (6 months or so of usage). I have borrowed different items for each, but liked the swing and a giant bouncer/exerciser we borrowed most.

First of all, congrats on your pregnancy! I was in the same boat-left most of the baby stuff at my ex’s house when I moved out with the kids and gave away most everything else because I didn’t think I was going to have more, so we started from scratch with my now 9-month-old as well. We didn’t get much since we are short on space too, but we did buy a baby bathtub, infant car seat, a good carrier (already had a Maya ring sling, which I loooove), a baby monitor, and a baby swing. For diapers, the Target store brand diapers are awesome, super cheap and no leaks ever-highly recommend!
