Cut it short, thinking about you guys and your running accomplishments!

The weekend is (almost) here!  All of Andrew’s siblings are in town this weekend and every one of my siblings is going to be here too (except for one of my brothers) so we have a lot of family in town for an event tomorrow!

I set out yesterday thinking that I’d do my long run but at mile 7.8 I decided that 10-11 miles wasn’t going to happen and ran home from there (finished with 9 miles… of course at a 9:22 average pace?!?).  I have a half-marathon next weekend but I did 10.5 miles last week so I should be fine next week and I can always walk the last few miles (or DNF) if that is what my body tells me to do.  Utah was slightly humid yesterday (normally it feels like a desert ((probably because it is one)) and I think that was what made the run so hard for me towards the end.  I kept thinking about all of you runners in the humidity as I was complaining about it to myself during those miles… seriously, you are amazing.

IMG 0245

PS I drink 2 glasses of water (3 if I stole the kid’s cups) before I head out for my run.  PPS my eyelashes are VERY fake.

IMG 0225

I came home and Brooke started massaging my shoulder all on her own.  She is sure trying to take care of her pregnant mama right now:)

IMG 0249

I just did a few glute exercises (a few of them from this post) and then I just went into child’s pose for as long as possible.  Also, I didn’t feel it during the run but afterwards my right foot felt strange on the bottom.  This means = if I wake up and it still feels funny then I will take the day off.  If I wake up and it feels fine then I’ll go out for a short run.  Too many times I have run through pain instead of just taking a few days off only to then have to take weeks off.

IMG 0265

Brooke found one of my running headbands and decided that it is hers now.  Looks like the sharing of closets is starting quite young for her.

IMG 0266

We drove up to go to my in-laws!  They always have so much fresh fruit there which is always exciting for me.

IMG 0278

For lunch my sis-in-law made these French Dip Sliders and they were SO good.  We switched it up with different meats and cheeses too… the sauce on top was so good.  It’s such an easy meal to make for a big group of people if you need something!

IMG 0273

We don’t really see the kids much when we are there because they are too busy running around with their cousins (I didn’t even get one of Knox because I don’t think he stopped running) but they had a blast.

IMG 0287

We made chicken enchiladas for dinner and then Andrew’s mom made his favorite dessert:

IMG 0298

Yummy Chocolate Dessert (it is VERY rich so it just takes a small piece to do the trick:)

4 Tb. Cocoa

2 Sticks Margarine

4 Eggs

2 tsp Vanilla

2 C Sugar

1 1/2 C Flour

1/2 tsp Salt

Melt margarine and cocoa. Beat eggs and sugar.  Add flour, salt and cocoa mixture.  Beat well.  Add vanilla.  Pour into greased and floured 9 x 13 pan.  Bake @ 350 degrees for 30 minutes.  Cover hot cake with Kraft marshmallow cream (found in ice cream section).

Icing:

1 Stick Margarine

1/4 C Cocoa

1/2 C Evaporated Milk

1 lb Powdered Sugar

1 tsp Vanilla

Heat margarine, cocoa, milk.  Add sugar and vanilla.  Mix well.  Apple to top of cake!

I started a new book (I only am a few pages in). I love thriller/suspense type books and a friend recommended this for me since I loved Girl on a Train.   I definitely have been reading way more while pregnant which I’ve loved.  PS the best book like this that I’ve read this year is The Couple Next Door.

Kristina!!!  “On July 8th, 11 Peace Corps volunteers, including myself, ran the Mount Mulanje Porters’ Race in Malawi.  The Porters’ Race was originally established as a competition for Mulanje porters and mountain guides, who have done the trek countless times, usually carrying large packs.  Over the years it has grown, and is now open to anyone of the age of 16 who is up for the challenge.  For me, and many of the volunteers, it was one of the most physically demanding races I have ever done.  14.4 miles up, over, and down the highest mountain in Southern Africa and we all made it!  Check out my full blog post for more about this cool race HERE!!

Jessie!!! “On June 15th I fell off my road bike- going pretty fast (15 mph).  I ended up breaking my dominant hand, cracking a rib, and just generally being pretty banged up.  I gave myself a week to recover & thought I was feeling better, but every time I tried to run it HURT.  My rib/breathing specifically.  So as bummed as I was, I didn’t push it.  I even walked my July 4th 5K because I had a few lingering niggles.  Yesterday I ran 3 x 5 minutes on the treadmill, sloooowly working up my speed. And today I ran TWO continuous (and PAIN FREE) miles outside- my first was 11:16/mile, but my second was an 8:44/mile.  Not only does it seem like I’m back to running, but my legs even remember some of the fast turnover I worked so hard for.  2 miles never felt so sweet.  You can find my blog HERE!!

Brooke’s face in the massage picture is so funny to me. It looks like she’s thinking “Really mom? I’m just trying to help you and you’re taking a picture?” I put both of those books on my Goodreads to read list!

Is the event tomorrow perhaps a baby shower?!

I’ve always loved Michael Connelly thrillers (Harry Bosch is SUCH a cool detective), but I really love books that challenge and inspire me (Annie Downs and Jen Hatmaker are two of my faves). But the best book I’ve read so far this year is Love Finds You in Sunset Beach, Hawaii by Robin Jones Gunn. She wrote my favorite series I read when I was a teenager (The Christy Miller Series), and this is somewhat of a spinoff of that. I think God used this book to help push me to move to California, which I’m doing later this year (and SO excited about)!

And THANK YOU for the ROOLEE discount!! Best.clothes.ever. :)

Long run of 9 miles tomorrow. I’m trying to figure out if I should do the Timp half. I have some friends who want me to do it. Technically if I did 9 tomorrow and 10 next week, I should be able to do the half the following weekend. But I worry it’s too much too soon for my foot (speaking of foot problems). Any thoughts? Have you done that one? I have a half next month and while I really want to do the Timp I worry about getting hurt and then not being able to do my next race. But maybe I’m just being overly cautious. And now I’m just babbling :)

I like most genres, but I have been reading a lot of thrillers lately – I just finished a book called The Good Girl by Mary Kubica and it was SO good!! Totally caught me off guard in the end but I really liked it. And The Underground Railroad was one of the best books I’ve read in ages. It’s painful to read a work of fiction that ties so closely to reality and what happened in our country’s past, but I think it’s important to remember things that have happened. And it was just really well-written and interesting.
I struggle with plantar fasciitis and I wouldn’t wish it on anybody. I think have it under control (mostly) now, but it can be really painful for me sometimes – there are times when I’m just sitting and my feet throb! It’s crazy.
14 miles tomorrow – longest run in my half marathon plan, and this week has had the highest running volume – I am ready to start dropping down a bit! It’s supposed to drop in humidity and only be about 60 degrees when I plan to run tomorrow, and I am looking forward to it – the humidity has been awful lately, and that’s worse than heat!

Yaaaaay, I love it when a big family gets together! (I have a very tiny fam, so big family stuff is always so intriguing to me.) Andrew’s fave dessert sounds like it would send me into a downward chocolatey spiral of doom. That guy’s pretty hardcore.

I’m not gonna lie to you (lol, why would I?): I don’t like reading that often. I wonder if it’s because I haven’t given things a chance; I do know that my eyes get tired quickly, so I have to be really into a book to get through it.

I’m still *coming back* from an eight-month long {no running} foot injury (plantar fascial TEAR, +the dreaded PF, +bursitis)! Slowly, but surely. A LOT of your older posts keep me motivated.

When I was pregnant I did PopSugars 52 books in a year and read a book a week, out loud when possible. Such good memories.
What is your monthly or quarterly budget for self care (nails, eyebrows, lashes)? Do you just one thing like that a month or how do you figure that out?

Reply

Oh Sage, that is AMAZING… I love that you did it! I should do a post on this… so Andrew and I actually decided (and we love this) that we would each get x amount of cash at the beginning of the month. I spend mine on stuff like nails/eyebrows etc and he spends his on usually saving it up for mountain bike stuff. I usually spend $100 a month on this stuff but it works great for us because then we both end up spending the same a month… just in different ways if that makes sense!

That book was great and the ending was too!

OH I am so glad you liked it… so excited for the ending:) Thanks Linda!

I just finished reading Behind Her Eyes!!! It was so good and I promise the end will blow your mind!!

I’ve been having some lower medial leg pain in my left leg. I am thinking it’s shin splints?? Any advice on how to overcome this? I’m training for a marathon right now but have taken 4 days off so far. Let me know!! I’m open to any suggestions!

Reply

NOOOO LESLIE!!! I am so so sorry! Have you been able to go in to a doctor at all? Shin splints are the worst (especially during marathon training!!!!) I wrote all of my tips in this post and I hope it is able to help you:

Due to my form, I’m most suspectible to foot injuries. I’ve had a couple of metatarsal fractures…

It sounds like you’ll have a busy but fun weekend! Enjoy! I have off work this weekend so my husband and I hopefully have some fun plans!

Right now I am reading You Are a Badass. It’s so good! I love self help books! This one is really motivating!
I have been having bad knee pain when running lately. It’s been going on for a while so I am making an apt. with a specialist. It just annoys me! I want to be able to just go run and I can’t without horrible pain. Sad.
I was going to ask you, how do you feel the clothes on ROLEE.com fit? Is it true to size? Do they run small? Big? There is a dress and shirt I really want but I wanted to ask first!
Have a great weekend with family!

Reply

Oh I love self help books too… I’m going to have to check that one out! Thank you Brandy! I hope that your knee pain goes away ASAP… that sounds awful! I would say that it runs pretty true to size and sometimes a LITTLE bit larger than size if that makes sense. Let me know what you think!! Thanks Brandy!

Cory Reese’s No Where Near First is THE BEST BOOK EVER. And I’ve hardly read any of it. haha

Reply

This is up next for me! I’ve been so excited to read it, but need to finish my current book first.

Most of what I read is non-fiction, history stuff. A lot of WWII. History nerd here! Cory’s book will be different from anything I’ve read in a really long time.

Reply

Thank YOU Leslie!!! That sounds awesome… I will have to read that! I’ve met him once and he was the nicest!

Reply

I usually have two books going at the same time – one fiction (aka a fun, easy beach read) and one nonfiction (to grow my brain haha). Right now I’m reading The Trespasser and Evicted:Poverty and Profit in the American City.

Those sliders your sister made look amazing. I love mini sandwiches because then I can eat like 20.

Picked up The Couple Next Door from the library last night – glad to hear you liked it so much! The best book I’ve read so far this year has been The Kind Worth Killing. Drew me in from the very beginning. So good!

Let me know what you think! I’m going to have to check out The Kind Worth Killing! Thanks Amy and I hope you have a great weekend!

Im a terrible reader. Audiobooks have saved me though. I read Option B by Sheryl Sandburg and Magnolia Story ( the book about chip and Joanna Gaines. )

Well I had ankle issues that caused pain on the outside of my foot for a very long time (Peroneal Tendonitis) and as you know I’m currently dealing with what we are now diagnosing as a bone bruise on my toe. Since March I have only had 2 weeks that I was able to run. And it looks like I’ll be out until the fall. Apparently they take forever to heal. Feet are hardworking. We need to respect them :)

Reply

Hi Janae! Loved today’s post… I’m definitely going to add that book to my to-read list!!

I actually just got my first food injury last Sunday… I broke it by tripping in heels! Can you believe it? I started a blog documenting my healing process/fitness/everything else in my life. I’d love if you could share it/take a look yourself.

Thank you so much! You are an inspiration to me! <3

Thank you Janae!! Thanks so much for checking out my blog. Means a lot to me :) and I’m hoping for a speedy recovery as well! Just switched from crutches to a boot so that’s progress :) have a great weekend!!

You should try reading Karin Slaughter. She writes suspense/thrillers similar to Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl.

I CAN’T WAIT!! Thank you Lauren… I really appreciate it. I hope you have a great day Lauren!

I broke my foot once in apparently the most common way, go figure! I stepped off a step the wrong way and rolled my ankle onto my foot. It happened so fast that it really wasn’t that painful. Bunion surgery (when I was 29 so bunions aren’t just for the older crowd), although completely worth it with the end result was a LONG recovery.
My 9 year old has read way more then me this summer, I think our last count is 25 books, including The History of American Architecture. Don’t know where that kid came from!! Her younger sister avoids reading at all costs.

Reply

Hi Carrie – I just broke my foot last Sunday in a really similar way (twisting it in heels)! UGH! I’m currently in a boot and hoping for a speedy recovery. How long did it take for your foot to heal? Do you have any tips/workouts you did?

Reply

So sorry you broke it! It was many years ago so I don’t remember exactly what I did but I know I kept active with a lot of core activities. Cardio is hard with the boot but upper body strengthening and core work are perfect. I think I had 4 weeks in the boot and 1 week in a surgical shoe. My foot was still swollen so that was why I had the shoe, no normal shoe fit but I had no restrictions. 4 weeks go by fast.

Reply

Oh Carrie, that is crazy that that happened! Oh I love how much your 9 year old reads, that is awesome! Enjoy your weekend!

I need to read this book asap! I LOVE thrillers / mysteries!! Thanks for the recommendation AND for commenting on my blog yesterday–you made my day! <3

I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get a run in this weekend (we are going to be pretty busy with family :)) but if I do it’ll probably be early morning or late evening – I’m hoping for 5 miles or so!
I really liked The Couple Next Door – I totally got sucked in and finished it in 2 days haha ;)
Have a great weekend!

I like a lot of different books. I need to find some good books to read because we are taking the camper out for the first time next week and I think I might need to have some reading time.

I have a confession….. I am not a runner so I have zero accomplishment! But I love your blog. Those sliders look and sound amazing. And thanks for the book recommendation, always looking for a good suspension thriller.

I’m coming off 3 12-hour shifts in a row, don’t know if I’ll be doing anything that remotely resembles physical activity! Have a great weekend :)

Kelly, thank you SO much for your sweet comment and I am so glad you read! THREE 12 hour shifts in a row… yeah I would probably sleep for the next three days straight! Enjoy your weekend and relax as much as possible!

I loved Girl on the Train and Couple Next Door (and all of Gillian Flynn’s books, have you read those?). Also check out The Widow. It reminded me a lot of Girl on the Train. But I’m going to be honest, I was disappointed with Into the Water, which is the second book by the Girl on the Train author. PS – have you added Gone at 21 and Fall Line to your true crime podcast list?

Reply

I haven’t read all of Gillian Flynn’s books… putting them on my list now along with The Widow. I LOVED Girl on the Train so I’m stoked to read this one. Thank you for the new podcasts too… I’ve been needing new ones! Thanks Joy and have a great weekend!

I HAVE to make those sliders, thanks for sharing!

When I read “cut it short” in your title I thought you were talking about your hair (haha.) When I was very pregnant during the summer (both times!!) that’s all I wanted to do! For some reason, my hair drove me crazy!!

We live where it’s pretty hot in the summer like 113 and a bit humid so I should be used to it, but I can always feel when it’s a few degrees hotter on my runs.. add extra humidity and multiply that feeling by 5!

You will do great on race day, you always do! Plus you will have access to ICE and pleny of water which makes all the difference :)

Reply

AHHH I want to cut all of my hair off right now too… I’m dying of heat! 113 + humidity…. I cannot even imagine!!! Thank you so much Karissa, you are so right about all of the ice. I hope you have an amazing weekend!

Oh my God! all of that food looks delicious!

I had an easy 4 mile run yesterday. My legs were really tired and now I’m having a cramp on the side of my foot. I had scheduled a 7 mile run for tomorrow but now I would have to see how I feel.

NOOOO I hope the cramp is just a one time thing on your foot! Keep me updated!!!

I love romance novels and literary fiction- thrillers give me bad dreams! I also like to keep up with the YA novels my students are reading!

I recently read “the strange and beautiful sorrows of Ava lavender” and LOVED IT more than words can describe!

I tripped and fell in flip flops last summer and completely busted my foot! It took a lot of physical therapy to get better, but it doesn’t bother me at all anymore:) I’m still recovering from my stress fracture, but I am finally able to get on a spin bike without discomfort now so I feel like I’m on the upswing!

Happy weekend!! PS that dessert looks fantastic.

Reply

That sounds great… I’m going to have to check it out! OUCH… about your foot and I hope your stress fracture continues to heal quickly… YAY for no pain on the spin bike! Have a great weekend Kerri!

Right now, I am enjoying reading some light, ‘brain candy’ fiction. I do enjoy biographies or devotionals, but there is nothing like a captivating story every now and then :)

I have a HALF MARATHON (!!) this Sunday and I am super pumped about it! It is the first time my husband and I are racing together, which makes it even more special :)

GOOD LUCK ON SUNDAY BETHANY!!! You are going to rock it and I love that your husband is racing it with you… love it!

Brooke is so sweet to massage your shoulders! You have raised her so well :) I have not read The Couple Next Door, but it has been on my list for a while now. I totally mix up the genre of books I read all the time. I think my favorite is either like motivational non-fiction or some kind of super suspenseful drama/romance book. I think the best book I have read this year is The Four Agreements, which I am actually in the middle of reading right now.

Reply

I hated The Couple Next Door. Not because it wasn’t well written. It was definitely engaging. I just didn’t like any of the characters. They were all awful people. I’m definitely in a phase now where I just want to read books that are positive and have happy endings.

Reply

Oh I totally see that!!! I guess my look for a book right now is one that keeps me guessing the whole time!! Let me know if what positive ones you are loving! Have a great weekend Allison!

Reply

Best book so far this year is “Long Way Gone” by Charles Martin. I recently discovered this author and I’ve read 4 of his books this year. His books hit every emotion – some of his descriptions are hilarious, but then he really gets to the heart.

This will be our last weekend on Oahu for a while so I’ll take one more trip up Tantalus on Sunday (10 miles, 1500′ of climbing then 1500′ of descending.)

Reply

I want to know about the those things Brooke and her cousin are playing with outside — looks like giant markers and stencils?

Reply

Ok, I have to write about dessert for a second. Andrew’s favorite looks excellent. Very Important Question (VIQ): there’s apple on there?/ It’s going on there? How do I feel about apple there? From the pic I feel very s’mory. Rocky Mountain has chocolate covered apples…. So is apple an ingredient on Andrew’s favorite?

When I look at the picture I want to know what my tastebuds should be craving. This is very important. Thank you.

I love Shakespeare!! Such drama and comedy! I know that is weird. I feel accomplished because I have done all my training runs this week. 2 short ones and a 4-miler. I am frustrated because I know I need to lose weight so I can run the races better but to be honest I love to eat for all occasions so it is a big challenge. You look so great!
