18 Weeks + how we came up with the NAME!!

18 WEEKS (on Friday:)!!

We had an appointment with our doctor last week and it was SO nice to see that everything is going well… the worrier that I am needs that big time:)

A few things about this last week!

DSC07292

*I CAN FEEL THE BABY MOVE!!! I could even feel her once from the outside when my hand was on my belly… I can’t wait until Andrew gets a chance to feel her.  This makes it all so much more real for me and I love it!  Knox asks me throughout the day whether or not the baby is awake or asleep and if I can feel her.. he is very interested!  I don’t think I felt Brooke move until I was 22 weeks or something, I am much earlier with this baby!

*As you know, we are having a girl.  I wasn’t really that surprised just because I felt like I had very similar food cravings with Brooke.  My pregnancies between Brooke and this one are VERY different but I am guessing that might be because of different dad DNA and I’m also 5 years older… I also have two kiddos (well, 50% of the time we have Knox) to take care of this time around which means I’m going to be more tired no matter what.  Andrew had two dreams before finding out the sex of our baby that we were going to have a girl…  I thought that was really interesting:)

*Hot dogs are still in full force in my brain.  I don’t know what it is but hopefully this one ends soon ha.  Cottage cheese and grapes are still going strong around here two.  I have a few bowls of this a day.

IMG 9839

*I don’t have as many aversions as I used to but I still can’t think about a chocolate chip cookie and I tried really hard at the movie on Saturday to eat Sour Patch Kids but my body wanted nothing to do with them!

*Still needing to use Zantac each day (when I try to go without it I feel awful) so I am ridiculously happy that it helps me so much and my doctor is more than happy to have me take it.

*Last night was a rough one for me though… I felt like my hormones hit an all time high.  Headache + nausea + lots of crying.

*My skin has been breaking out suddenly like crazy, so that’s fun.

*I just bought THIS BRA and I am obsessed.  One of my best friends recommended it to me and I am so grateful for her.  Life changing and she said it is great for nursing.  It is so much more comfortable than the bra I was using before (with an underwire)!

*Weight gain:  I have no idea!  I just get on the scale backwards and the doc tells me how I’m doing… doing great so far!

*Running is still happening, I just have to take a million bathroom breaks ha!! Last week I did a total of 43.54 miles!  I was pretty excited about those miles.  Everything ranged from about an 8:55 to a 9:45 average pace.

*Brooke pretends that this little doll is her new sister… I have a feeling Brooke and Knox are going to be big helpers!

————————————————————————————————

When we first found out that we were expecting, we started talking about names.  Quickly, we decided to wait until we knew the sex of the baby before talking names because it seemed like a lot to try to come up with both boy and girl names (even though I had a feeling we were having a girl).  One thing we realized with our first discussions of names was that we had VERY different opinions of names and we are both pretty opinionated about them.  I was a little nervous how the heck we are going to come up with a name together!! Brooke was super easy for me because it was a name that I wanted to use ever since I was in Jr. High so when I found out she was a girl, it was a super easy decision.

It was during our first discussion about names after finding out we were having a girl that Andrew said a name.  I think it was the second name that he said.  I stopped him and said, THAT’S IT!!!!!   Instantly, I just felt like that was her name.  He loves it, I love it and a few minutes later we talked about middle names and after talking about ten different ones we decided on one.   Neither of us have any desire to change what we decided on (but that isn’t much insurance for my ever-changing emotions right now;) and every time I think of the name, I get really excited.

I didn’t expect it to be that easy for us but it sure was!  Now here is where I’m not very nice and we are waiting to tell EVERYONE (even my mom!?!?) until she is born to tell the name.  Look at us being secretive (I give myself 2 more weeks before I accidentally type it on a post or something).

PS Brooke might be disappointment that we aren’t naming her Rainbow Sparkles but I’m sure she will love this name too.

————————————————————————————————

I REALLY want to hear from you… how did you come up with your kiddos names?  Have any different opinions on all of this?  Did you wait to tell people?

Did anyone else have a feeling or dreams about whether they were having a girl or boy before finding out?

Did anyone wait until their baby was born to find out the sex?

We were super secretive with our name(s) – we didn’t know the sex of our baby until birth, so we had first and middle names ready to go for both a girl and a boy. It was really hard to keep it a secret…but frankly, I didn’t want anyone’s opinion! And it seems like everyone has one…once the baby is here, everyone is too smitten to actually offer any negative opinions. We even decided to keep our chosen boy name a secret in case we want to use it later.

We went with Clara Elizabeth – I actually spotted Clara on a gravestone when we were walking in a cemetery plot where a lot of my relatives are buried. So, it’s technically a family name, but I never knew my great grandma Clara. Elizabeth is my name (and I did the hard work of growing her!), but it’s also a strong family name with ties to my mom and the grandmother I am very close to.

I really loved not knowing the sex until the delivery room… It was just nice to have it be a complete surprise. It also reduced some of the advice we got, and also led to less gendered gifts-which will be super handy when we have a 2nd if we have a boy! We did both guess girl though based on hunches and dreams. :)

Also, holy heck does time fly…Clara will be 5 months old next week!

THAT IS SO COOL that you waited to find out the sex… I love that! WHAT A SURPRISE! Yes, that is definitely a big reason we want to keep it secret too! Clara Elizabeth is an absolutely beautiful name… I love the strong family ties too. Happy 5 months next week Clara. Thanks Elizabeth!

i loved the appointments for the reassurance!! I would have let them hook me up to a monitor for the entire pregnancy. Kidding. Sort of.
Chris thought for sure it was girl. I had 2 girl dreams before birth. Also, while I was preggo I was super drawn to pink. Clothes, yes, but even bought this pink purse that I now refer to as the Hope purse.

Reply

Really!?!? Okay, that is so interesting Erica that you were super drawn to pink… I love the Hope purse:) Yes, I would really appreciate one of those monitors PLEASE!

Oh gosh, TOTALLY a good idea to keep it secret! When I was pregnant with my son I had about 6 friends who were pregnant too and I didn’t want them to use my name, so we kept it secret until birth too. Never mind the fact that everyone tends to have an opinion! Ain’t nobody got time for that, especially when you’re tired and feeling icky!

Reply

You had 6 friends that were pregnant at the same time?! HOW FUN!! Yep, great call on keeping it a secret:) I hope you are having a beautiful day Kelly!

Reply

Yep, it was nice to have so many ppl to relate to at the same time! Only a couple of them knew each other though as they were from different parts of my life! It’s a gorgeous day today, so yep, it’s a good one. I hope you are feeling better today!

We always knew middle names would be after grandma/grandpa…once we decided on the first name then we just went with the one that sounded best.

We knew the sex of all 3 before giving birth but NEVER gave out any name details. WAY too many opinions out there and we didn’t want to hear them.

Reply

YES YES YES… the opinions makes it fun to wait until the birth! No one is going to have an opinion about a name once they see that baby’s face! Love that you named your three kiddos middle names after their grandparents! Thanks Kathy!

Our baby girl is due to arrive next month, and we still aren’t 100% sold on a name. It’s so hard to choose! My husband had some pretty strong opinions about some of my favorite names, which I was surprised about! We have a few top contenders, but are going to wait until we meet her to make a final decision. I haven’t shared our top picks with anyone, which a lot of people find very frustrating. My dad tries to sneak it out of me every now and then, but he hasn’t been successful yet ;)

Reply

We wanted to find out the sex so that we could be adequately prepared. We wrote a list out of our top 10 for boys and girls: I had the girls name, he had the boys.

I totally had feelings throughout that we were having a girl: dreams and a gut feeling.

We ended up having a girl (!) and naming her Eleanor Joyce. I actually got her first name from the TV show Chuck (ha!) and her middle name is after my husband’s late grandmother.

Reply

So we both for sure thought boy because this pregnancy is different than with my daughter. Way more nausea, way more tired and completely different cravings and aversions. But, nope. I’m 23 weeks today with a little girl. Before we found out boy or girl we were brainstorming names. We have like 5 girl names and 1 boy name. My hubby actually picked both the first name and middle name for this baby. Last time we chose together. I thought that maybe our name would change before birth, but a week after “deciding” on the name we looked up the meaning. The name we chose means “daughter of Adam”. My husband’s name is Adam! How crazy is that?! There’s no changing it now…we feel like it’s meant to be. While my daughter (who is 4 1/2 now) thinks we should name her Cloud, we are going with Addison Jeanne.

Reply

My first daughter’s first name is a combo of mine and my husbands middle names, her middle name is Anne after my grandma Ann. My second daughter I just loved the name and kept saying that was her name. So it stuck. My son is namened after my husband but just the last part of his first name (Von) and his middle name is after my oldest brother who was a still born. We didn’t decide for sure on any names until they were born though.

Reply

We are on #4 and we NEVER find out gender. It’s one of my favorite parts, pushing out that baby and having my husband lean in real close and tell me that we have a “new son/daughter!”

We casually talk about names over the whole pregnancy but the only name we knew for sure was our boy name (family names). Our first was a girl and we talked it out with her in our arms since she wasn’t a boy; our second was a boy so we knew right away; and our third was a girl with no names really picked out! We figured it out with her in my arms, too. We always use at least one family name to honor a member of the family.

For this one, we actually have two names picked out, which is amazing to me. We tell NO ONE the names … People are just too opinionated and vocal in a negative way (in my opinion lol)! Once the cute baby is out its harder to give negative feedback!

We didn’t know the sex of our chuldren before birth. We knew the name of our oldest son (Hans) a long time before he was born, he was named after my father in law, but I liked the name before I met my husband. We had chosen a name for our second son, but about six weeks before he was born we were driving home and decided we should name him Bart. The name we first chose came in handy as a middle name if the number two twin would be a boy. But our twins turned out to be a girl (Femke) and a boy (Joost) so that name didn’t get used. It took us a while to choose names for our twins in all possible combinations. But we’re still really happy with our choices.

Reply

With our daughter we didn’t know whether she was a boy or a girl, which was fun and exciting. We were not 100% sure which name would suit her best. But when my husband said: it’s a girl, I just said: oh Eva. So that was that. When we had our son we did know the sex, but we kept it a secret. And we also had a name for him, which my husband accidentally used in public at least twice. I found that knowing he was a boy and naming him already did help me while I was in labour. I visualized him in there and talked to him which made it a better experience than my first delivery. But if I had another baby (which is highly unlikely) I would go for not knowing, then none of us could slip up on the gender or the name.

Reply

Just like you, I just a feeling that I was having a girl. Since this literally was a miracle baby for us I had no preference though. My husband actually came up with the entire name. He wanted another flower name but he also wanted it to have meaning. He came up with Dahlia Amerie Gomez and just like that I said yes! Dahlia happens to not only be another flower but it starts with a D like both of our names and it happens to be the national flower for Mexico. Our culture is very important to us so this name has a very significant meaning for my husband and I. My hubby loves telling the story that he came up with the name himself ?

Reply

I have 2 boys, Nolan and Jude. We didn’t share names of either until they were born but found out the sex of both. With Nolan we were between 2 names until I was in labor and the nurses helped us decide! Nolan Ryan is my husbands favorite baseball player so he obviously hasn’t high hopes for him :) When Nolan first started talking we had the Beatles playing a lot in the house and he would sing along to Hey Jude and I always thought it would be a great baby name. When I was pregnant again I was convinced it was a girl because my symptoms were sooooo different than the first time but it was another boy so we were able to let Nolan play a part in naming his little brother. Of course his first choice for a name was Tow Mater (from Cars) but he’s happy with Jude too :)

When we found out the baby was a girl I knew I had to name her Isla. Luckily my husband loved it too. We couldn’t agree on a boy name so this made it easy. My sister was the only person who knew her name until she was born. Back in 2013 Isla wasn’t popular at all but in now #4 on Nameberry yet so many people have a hard time pronouncing it. It’s Eye-la but we’ve heard at least 4 different pronunciations of it. My sister was the only other person who knew her name before she was born. Seriously if we had told anyone her name prior to birth we would have heard how hard the name was going to be pronounce and that we should pick another. We love it and think she does too! I can’t wait until December which by the way my birth month so feel free to name her Christy ;-)

Reply

It’s such a relief when you choose the name! Good job! We had a similar experience with our first child’s name. Total disagreement until we found the one. We used our mom’s maiden names (Cole and Wright) for the middle names and chose pretty strong, easy to pronounce but somewhat unique names for their first names. We told no one the names until they were born. I didn’t want to see reactions or hear opinions. I think naming your child is a pretty personal thing for just mom and dad.

Picking a boy’s name was easy (and we will still use it if we have a bit next!) – my husband’s middle name and my dad’s name. For a girl, we knew we wanted Grace for a middle name; I suggested Hannah and after a few days of thinking about it, my husband agreed that it was “the one.” We are horrible at keeping secrets plus it made her arrival feel so much more real, so we shared her name pretty soon after we decided on it. ;)

Reply

Funny, at least one ‘meaning of’ Hannah i have read – and what we tell people – is that the name is Hebrew and it means “grace of God.” Our oldest is Hannah Laurel and Laurel means “crowned with laurels.” So she is “grace of God crowned with laurels.”

Reply

I found that out when we were preparing to have Hannah Baptized! She is essentially Grace x2! I love Hannah Laurel, what a beautiful name!

I LOVE the idea of waiting until the baby is born to reveal the name. We did that with both of our kids. With my first (a boy), it took a little while to come up with a name we liked so we did tell people the ideas we had, but we never said what his name would actually be. Then with my girl, we had named her shortly after we got married, so we knew what it was going to be. We didn’t tell anyone anything about her name. Not even my mom. I loved when she was born that I announced her name. It was so fun! And then no one told us their opinion, because it was her name! So good for you! It was hard to keep it a secret because everyone asks, but I am very happy we went that route!

Reply

I love that you’re waiting! So fun! Our names have all been family names, our son was my maiden name and the my grandpas first name for his middle name, our daughter we Shirley the second we found out she was a girl, my hubs and I each had a Grandma Shirley and he middle name is mine and my moms middle name (people either LOVE or HAtE the name Shirley and they tell me either way?) our third baby, was a girl and we had a hard time but I have a great great grandmother named Pearl and my hubs has a great-something aunt Pearl so we were thrilled when we found that. Her middle name is not a family name, I was extremely sick with her and had an IV for months while I was on bed rest and at 15 weeks I said if this baby is a girl her middle name will be Ivy so she knows how hard I worked for her, so she’s our Pearl Ivy. Whatever you name your baby girl will be perfect, I’m sure! I mean I totally voted for Rainbow Sparkles!

Reply

Aw that’s so exciting you have the name picked out! My husband wanted to wait until we found out the sex before discussing names. We found out on Monday we’re having a boy and have a strong contender now. The middle name is family and the first is one my husband suggested that’s growing on me. We’re planning to keep it secret until he’s born but I’m not sure I can keep it quiet for 18 weeks!

Reply

I love baby talk! I am 33 weeks tomorrow so babies are all I can think about. With our first daughter Rylee I think my husband and I played the name game 75% of my pregnancy. I had said Rylee a couple times before and my husband wouldn’t budge either way. Then one day when I was 35ish weeks pregnant out of the blue he goes I think her name should be Rylee. We decided on the untraditional spelling and her middle name is Rose after my husbands God-mother. After Rylee was born my brother in law asked us if we made her name on purpose, my husband and I didn’t understand what he meant so the answer to that was no. My name is Ally, my husbands name is Ryan so Rylee is the perfect combination of both! How that worked out I have no idea.

Fast forward to this baby, also a girl…played the name game only this time my husband hated everything I was saying. Until one night he goes….”this is the only name I like let’s name her baby girl (we’re waiting until she is born) Anne (will be her middle name). So I think we have her name, I love it too and it feels right!

With both my pregnancies I 100% thought I was having a boy and I could not be more wrong LOL. So I know we are not done having kids after this baby girl is born. Well at as long as everything goes smoothly so I think with our next babies we might wait. I say that now but as soon as I hit 16 weeks the countdown begins to find out!

I’m excited to see what you picked and I love following along on your journey!

When I got pregnant with my first we knew we wanted to use the name Elliot for a boy as it’s a family name of my husband’s great grandpa. She was a girl but we still wanted a family connection so we decided on Isabel Edith, after my husband’s grandma (who incidentally I had lived with for 2 months before my mission and was equally special to me). Then when my 2nd was a boy, the chance to use Elliot came up and we added Arthur as his middle name as it’s my dad’s, brother’s, nephew’s, grandpa’s, great grandpa’s and great-great grabdpa’s name. ? With our 3rd we joked we liked vowel names, but when someone at church gave the baby blessing and said the baby’s middle name was Oliver…well, I loved it and held onto it for a year until my 3rd child was a son. His middle name is my maiden name. Then lastly when Oliver was 2 weeks old and I had given away all my girl gear, I had a super special experience where I was clearly told I was supposed to have another child, she was going to be close in age to Oliver, and she was a girl. 20 months later we had Avery Beth, Avery because of a dream my mother in law had while I was pregnant with Oliver and she saw us in a dream with this 2 year old girl with blond curly hair and her name was Ava. We laughed it off because we weren’t planning on more kids after our 3rd. But when I got pregnant again after that strong revelation…well, We didn’t particularly want Ava but we went with Avery instead and Beth after my grandma. And guess what, she is our only child who got my husband’s super curly hair…and it’s super blond!!!! Anyway, that’s my novel about children’s names. ?

I just had my second girl last year and we had a name we kinda sorta liked but then she was born and came out completely opposite of what we were expecting (like my girls don’t even look like sisters —- hair, eye, skin tone are total opposites and yes same dad haha) and the name we kinda liked definitely didn’t go with how she looked so for about 2 days she was nameless! So I say never settle on a name for sure until you see that baby in person ;)

We did wait to find out the sex of the baby. We wanted the good ol fashion way of finding out, and I was using bold primary colors for everything, so it didn’t matter for preplanning. We chose a girls name right away, as of the time she was born, thankfully she was a girl, because after 9 months, we STILL couldn’t agree on a boys name and had nothing. I was so scared it was going to be a boy and we didn’t have a name and they’d force me to choose before leaving the hospital and I’d pick something in a rush I wasn’t happy with. It was a huge fear and stress for me. Whew…it was a girl though. I actually found her name in a Readers Digest while flying even before I was pregnant. It was about a little girl named Ashlyn and she couldn’t feel pain, like when she got hurt, she couldn’t feel it. The more I read the name, the more I liked it. We had 2 others we liked, but this was different and not too common, but not crazy out there either.

Reply

My first was easy. My Dad passed away when I was 12 and his name was Cecil so we did Cecelia and her middle name is my maiden name. My 2nd was tough. We could come up with nothing and so I went on to a babycenter forum and asked for suggestions. I think it was likely the only post I had ever done on that website but someone suggested Audrey and that clicked! We tell her she is named after Audrey Hepburn because she is confused why big sis was named after someone and not her!!! We did not share her name until she was born, we told everyone it was a secret when truthfully we just did not know until the week before and she was a week late!!!

Reply

We did NOT find out the sex. It was hard, but my husband LOVED the moment he got to go to the waiting room and announce, “It’s a girl!” Names were hard because we are both teachers. :) We found the name we used for our daughter in a baby name book. We both (separately) put the name on a list: Delaney. Her middle name is my grandmother’s name: Vivian.

Reply

Wow! 18 weeks and already feeling the baby! What a treat! :) I was 21 weeks until I felt any movement and thought that was late. That’s so funny Andrew had two dreams that it was a girl! That’s what happened to my husband and he was convinced from then on. (And he was right!) I can’t wait to find out the name in December! I’m sure it’ll be perfect.

Reply

We pretty much told everyone our names as soon as we had decided. However, with Braden he didn’t have a name until after he was born. The hubs and I each counted to 3 and said our names and they were different. We’ll just say that the husband won and I’m okay with that. With Luke, I had a dream around 25 weeks that his name was Luke and that was it :) I also had a very strong feeling about the sex of each baby and I was right with the first 2 and totally off with my last one.

I can’t wait to find out the name when she is born!!

We named our son after his grandfathers. We figured we could get the family obligatory naming out of the way. It wasn’t until he was born that we finally decided on the name. My OB/GYN helped us name him. In a funny story, when my cousin was little and her mom was pregnant, she wanted to name the baby Valvoline (like the motor oil). Rainbow Sparkles doesn’t seem that bad in comparison.

That’s so exciting you guys came up with a name! I can’t wait to hear what you name her. I’m glad everything is going well so far.

We named our daughter after one of my best friends and my aunt (who didn’t have kids of her own). That one was super easy for us, but we hadn’t really told everyone/officially made up our minds and one of our friends got us an engraved music globe with that name…so we were stuck. ;-) It took us three days in the hospital to name our son, and it came down to two choices. My husband wanted Matthew, but I’ve dated too many Matt’s in the past, so we ended up with a totally random name with no meaning: Nathan. Unless you count my favorite character on One Tree Hill back in the day. But I love it! :)

I tried so hard not to use Zantac because I didn’t want to medicate at all, but my heart burn got to be so bad that my OB was like, for the love of God, just take one every morning and you will feel so much better! And I did, and it helped a lot, though as she grew, I had to use TUMs also. All that worry and she’s as healthy as can be and almost six months old!

Reply

We chose our son’s first name because it was technically a family name, but a super distant relative (so really, I just liked the name). The middle name is Beau, for my MIL – she still uses her maiden name, Beauregard, and apparently in college her nickname was Beau. We didn’t tell anyone the name until he was born. My due date was two days after Thanksgiving, so we called him Butterball while I was pregnant. :)

So exciting! Like you, I’ve had a name I like picked out since junior high. I always wonder if I’ll still like it/use it when the time comes for me and my husband to start our family!

We chose to not find out the sex of the baby beforehand. In life most surprises, sadly, seem to be of the negative variety and this is one of the few ones that we genuinely bring us joy so why not hold off in finding out. That said, we were CONVINCED (as was everyone) she was a boy-her name was going to be Lucas Clayton. We never even really talked about girls names because we just assumed I would deliver a boy. Imagine our surprise when our sweet girl came out instead and her name, without giving it any real forethought, just kind of rolled off my tongue: Ava Grace. Over 9 years later and I still smile thinking about it. One of the best days of my life.

I have that bra too! I ordered it a few weeks ago and it’s incredibly comfy and perfect for nursing. YAY!

Reply

When I was pregnant with my son my husband and I had very different ideas about names so it took us a while to pick one we both liked. The only requirement was that the first name had to be short. Our last name is long and a bit of a tongue twister. So we went with Dean, something not too weird but not too common. For our daughter, we googled one syllable female names and found it from a list. We chose Winn. Then her middle name is my husband’s grandfather’s middle name, Valentine. He hated it until we used it for her middle name.

Yes to the dream! The night before I took a positive pregnancy test I dreamt that my husband and I were taking care of an 8 month old little boy for a few months – he wasn’t ours but for some reason in my dreamworld he was staying with us for a quite some time (random I know). The next morning I got the positive test and I just had a gut feeling that our baby was a boy, and sure enough he is! 36 weeks today and we can’t wait to meet him. We’re keeping the name a secret too though, but there was no way I could wait to find out the sex! Can’t wait to hear your baby girl’s name in a few months!

I think it’s great to wait and tell the name after the baby…………it’s an element of surprise, but also, when you meet her, what if suddenly you do change your mind? Better to wait and announce when you meet her. Exciting! And I am not even sure if I want kids, but I do have favorite names already-ha!

I had a dream that the nurse told me she was pretty sure I was having a girl based off the hormone levels in my blood. (Is that even a thing?!). Sure enough when we found out the gender it was a girl! My husband had a sister that died at birth so that’s where her first name kylee came from, and her middle name may is mine & my grandmas middle name! We did not tell anyone her name until she was born even though we had it picked at about 6 month.

I don’t think I could keep a secret that long from my mom. :) Can’t wait to hear what name you guys picked!!

We are about 5 weeks (eh give or take depending on when baby is ready) from “d-day”) and still haven’t picked out a name for baby girl yet! We are down to 3 now I think. Our choices were mainly based on heritage- a combination of Irish/Scottish (me) and Polish (him), and 2 middle name options that I love equally that are both family names and work well with the first names. When my boyfriend talks to the bump he asks “What’s your name??” :D We’re both thinking we will wait until after she’s born to make our final decision, but if it happens before I’m keeping it a secret for sure :)

Also- I totally had dreams about having a girl early on but for some reason we kept referring to it as a “him” until the 20 week ultrasound (she has had a hard time sitting still throughout so the doctor had the hardest time trying to guess until the 3D ultrasound).

Reply

I think that’s great you’re waiting til she’s born to share her name…makes it more exciting for everyone else and more special for you! Hope you’re having a wonderful day!!

Loved reading the responses here because I think names are really important and come from deeply within. I know the name you guys decided on will be just perfect for your sweet baby girl! We chose not to know the sex in advance of either of our babies so we picked our favorite boy and girl names before delivery. Their middle names were chosen in honour of their grandparents. :)

We have six kids and knew all of them would have Hawaiian names (because they’re Hawaiian) but with 37 cousins coming up with a name of their own (that had a strong meaning and also wasn’t a commen name, Kai, Kapono, Leilani) was hard. So with our first we decided to use character traits that we believed represented the fruits of the Spirit. Some of them weren’t given a name until right before we left the hospital! Akahai (gentleness), ‘Oliko (joy), Hako (goodness), La‘ahia (faithfulness), No‘iau (temperance) and Ma‘alahi (patience)…..I guess we need to have 3 more!? All of them have Hebrew middle names and the girls also have a family name from my dad and my mom.

I always thought I would have a boy but I have a girl! I was in shock when the ultrasound tech said “girl!” I was happy but I was so convinced that I was having a boy that it was like a girl wasn’t even an option LOL Then a couple weeks before she was born I had some dreams that she was a boy! Made me nervous! When she was born one of the first things I said was, “It’s a girl, right???”

We kept her name a secret until she was born! It drove everyone crazy not knowing but it was fun! I think it’s cool to make the announcement when they are born! Excited to see what name you chose!

I had 3 boys and back then (1965-1969) one had to wait to know the sex. So I prepared for both kinds! All my names were biblical, so Philip, Paul, and John. Their middle names had links with family. I liked biblical names because, well, they are biblical! And because, by virtue of that, they are timeless. Sadly, we lost Philip, my first, when he was 14 to anaphylactic ahock when we were on vacation in England visiting family. Over there Pippa is short for Philippa, so when son John had his second, a girl, he called her Pippa to honor his brother ?. I loved this–names so mean a lot!!

We didn’t tell anyone our third girl’s name, so that we wouldn’t have to listen to everyone’s opinions about it! Once there’s an actual baby, it seems like people only have nice things to say. :)

My daughter often dreams of our close family/friends when they are going to have a baby(before they tell) and/or the gender of the baby. It’s SO strange. Her dreams of baby gender have been right every time!!?
She has moved away but last week dreamed a couple in our community had a baby boy so she called me. She didn’t even know they were pregnant but baby had actually been born the same night she had the dream. Crazy!

This turned out long, sorry.

We waited to find out the sex for the first two – it was awesome. Life only has so many genuine surprises! I wanted to wait on the last but my wife insisted on knowing and I wasn’t going to let her know and me not.

Our first child was easy to name. She was named after the German landlord that introduced me to my wife. (LOOONG STORY). We just Americanized the name Hannelore to Hannah Laurel. If she had been a boy she would have been Jackson Brenner. Jack came from the name of a birthday gift teddy bear I gave my wife when I was finally ‘ready’ to be a Dad.

For our second my wife got dibs on the first name, Hope (because we were ‘hoping’ for a long time, 4 miscarriages and about 7 years). I got the middle name, Leannán (pronounced Lan-awhn). It’s a Celtic name for a ‘fairy sweetheart.’ If she had been a boy we didn’t know what to name her. I didn’t like Jackson anymore and my wife didn’t like Brenner anymore (my Mom’s maiden name – she was an only child). We were literally in the pre-op without a boy name, but my wife ‘knew’ it was a girl, so it ended well.

Our third (who was a bit of a surprise) we found out was a boy before he was born. I had dibs on the first name but I was being pushed by my wife and Hannah into Jackson Steele. But I still didn’t care for Jackson anymore, and it has become a far too popular name. He was at least 40 hours old – and I almost got my wife to agree I had a good choice first name but not an appropriate middle to go with – before I conceded. (My Mom was getting pretty testy too). So Jackson Steele it was. We call him Jack. Jackson is just there in case he wants to go formal later in life.

They are 11, 3 and 2. In texts they are HaHoJa. And last bit of trivia is all 3 were born in the same hospital, same doctor, on same day (Friday). First one was at least 10 days late, induced and then delivered via C-section, so the rest were scheduled C-section. (We love that doctor).

I didn’t find out my daughter’s sex until she was born. We had a home birth and the midwives/doctor didn’t do routine ultrasounds and I never even had one!

We had a name for a boy and a girl. We named her Tenai for where we live. We live in the Kootenai Mountains and we shortened it. Her middle name is Willow because I love willow trees.

We didn’t discuss names with anyone else either because it was exciting to surprise everyone and I didn’t really need anyone else’s opinions :)

I’m so excited for you and your family Janae!

Have you heard of Nieman Ranch all natural hot dogs? I loved them during pregnancy and found them at Whole Foods – SO delicious!!

I didn’t know what I was having but I had a girl’s name picked out after going through the social security registry from 1920-1940 (I wanted something old fashioned). The boy’s name I didn’t know (I felt like it was so much harder)k and husband and I tried to pick out in between contractions at the hospital in case it came out a boy!? Luckily it was a girl and little Eleanor May just turned 6 months old!

From the minute, I took the test we knew it was going to be a girl and we were right! We couldn’t agree on any names so we bet our March Madness brackets on naming rights. I lost, but was still throwing out suggestions. Fast forward to the waiting room getting ready to be induced and the husband says, “Morgan or Madison, you’re pick.” Emily and Morgan were my favorites, so Morgan Diane it was! Diane is after my mom. I loved not having to deal with name opinions.

I love that you are waiting to share the name! Love surprises :) For now, we plan on keeping the gender a surprise (for us and everyone) until he is born–I’m convinced we are having a boy, but I am always wrong with my friends–but I might give in and find out at an ultrasound.

We already settled on a girl’s name and a boy’s name…and thankfully we both agree on the names and love them both! First name will be in honor of my Dad…middle names in honor of other family members.

Happy to hear that you and baby are doing well! And that Brooke and Knox seem excited!

So fun to hold out on the name!
I have a Brooke too. My husband always wanted a little girl named Brooke?! I love the name but also wanted Olivia incorporated because I like the old school feel ;) Poor kid ended up with the initials BOB but we just tell her that it is after her Grandpa Bob. She calls him: GrandBob :)

Your little baby bump is adorable!!! If your readers can vote on the name….I will vote for Brooke’s choice – Rainbow Sprinkles!!!

I am a twin. When my mom was pregnant with us, they couldn’t tell there were two of us since our heartbeats coincided. Also…the technology (waaaaaaay waaaaaaaay waaaaaaaay back then) wasn’t as great as it is now. She had a feeling she was having twins though. She said she kept getting double-yolk eggs and other signs like dreams, etc.
She will tell you the best moment of her life was when she was on the table (she had a c-section) and the doctor said ‘There’s another one in there!!!!’

We waited until birth to find out the sex of all three of our kids – was so exciting. I loved having to come up with boy and girl names for all of them – and they were all different even though we had the alternative name still available. They all love knowing what they would have been called if they were the opposite sex!

For our first we didn’t have a name picked until after he was born – Bryce. We just couldnt agree but i finally gave to Bryce because its scottish and his middle name is my maiden name, Murray, which is also scottish. For our second, I’m currently 38 weeks with a girl and we have kept her name a secret except I accidently said it in front of my sister! I didn’t even notice and my sister gasped when I said it, lol. Oh well. Regardless, the rest of our family is chopping at the bit to know! Hopefully only two more weeks!

We always waited to find out the gender. With our first, Madeline, it was a name I always wanted.
And our third, Alexander, was the boy name we always loved.
But our middle, Gabrielle, went about 3 days with no name. We had decided on Lauren but when she was born she just didn’t look like a Lauren.

We waited until birth to find out the sex. We had a handful of names boy/girl but nothing fully set. We wanted to met him/her before deciding a name. Once he was born we narrowed the list to 2 first name contenders and 2 middle name contenders. It took us 3 days to name him! LOL! We were in the hospital for 4 days due to c-section. Can’t wait to hear her name! So exciting!

I’m currently approaching 21 weeks in my first pregnancy and I’m so excited to follow your journey to baby #2! My husband and I have decided not to find out the gender and wait until the baby arrives. We figured that we’re happy regardless if it’s a boy or a girl, and so few things in life can be that big of a surprise that it just seems like it will be the best thing ever! We’ve picked a name that can be used for either a boy or a girl (I like boy names for girls anyway), and the spelling will change slightly depending on which it is. We talked names for a few weeks I think and once my husband said the name, we just both really liked it! We’ve also decided to keep it a secret from everyone. If no one knows the gender, what’s the point in knowing the name, right? ;) Plus, even normal, stood the test of time names get scrutinized and I didn’t want to deal with all of that nonsense. When the baby arrives and we make the announcement, it’ll all fit just like it should. We can’t wait!!

We are waiting to find out the sex, but it’s a tough wait! My friends and family (along with my husband and I) are divided 50/50 team girl/boy. We do have a name picked out for each, but are waiting to tell… we figure we’ll tell the baby first ;) You look fantastic, Janae, and it’s so fun sharing this journey with you!

We didn’t find out the sex with all 3 of our kids – I loved it that way!! Names were super hard for us – I had TONS of ideas and my husband seemed to veto ALL of them. In fact, he didn’t like our middle’s name (Cora) but I had in my head we were having a boy – so when SHE was born the doctor says “It’s a girl, what’s her name?!” And with total shock and uncertainty my husband says “Cora?” And the doctor says “Are you sure???” We laugh so hard about it now because he loves her name now :)
With our 3rd, we had said if the baby was a boy we’d name him Andrew Murray and call him Murray – but when we had our boy we just started calling him Andrew – he just seemed so much like an Andrew to me! :)

When I was pregnant with my daughter I had a dream about a little girl I met in a store filled with dolls. She had long curly dark hair. I had long curly drk brown hair so naturally I thought this was her coming to me in my dream. I asked her, “Are you Marina?” (the name we had chosen) She was shy and nodded, “No.” I thought OK. What’s YOUR name?” She replied, “Lizette.” Fast forward 5 yrs. My daughter, Marina enters kindergarten and comes home to tell me she made a new friend, her name is Lizette” WEIRD! They stayed friends for many years until they started going to different middle schools.
