Thirteen Thursday THINGS!!!!

1.  Seven miles done and done before Brooke woke up.  On my run I was thinking about how nice (among a million other things) it is that I can do this again. For many years the treadmill was my only option most days because I couldn’t leave while Brooke was asleep.  Turns out that I was only sweating in one little line on my shirt during this run.

2.  I don’t know why I love running near water as much as I do.  Is it the reflection I love?  Or the cool breeze that usually comes along with it?  Maybe it is because there are usually animals near it?  I don’t know, but when I come next to water I just want to slow down for a minute, turn off my music (or podcast) and stare.  PS I just finished the Up & Vanished Podcast (I loved it)… now onto S-Town!?!?  Who else is listening to it or has already finished?  PPS keep any more podcasts recommendations coming, I am always needing them!

3.  What happens when you want blueberries with a little bit of waffle for breakfast after your morning run.  It didn’t look pretty but it sure tasted good.  You can never have enough blueberries in my opinion.

IMG 5222

4.  KNOX CAME HOME!!! When that happens we don’t see them much because they are too busy playing with their best friend and they no longer need me (until they are hungry;).

5.  I had a dentist appointment to get to so I could get my teeth cleaned.  They have a tv on the ceiling so I caught up on Good Morning America and tried to avoid any sounds of drills coming from the rooms next to me;).  I was right by my sister’s house (and my favorite salad bar;) so after my appointment I went over to her house and we got to talk for a few minutes on her front porch.  She is right in the middle of re-doing her entire kitchen. They are doing the whole thing themselves and completely gutted the kitchen… they are my heroes. I can barely paint a wall in my house without getting paint all over the place.  The raspberries in this salad were the best topping possible.

IMG 5227

6.  I think now that it is warm again, I am salad’s number one fan again.  Winter = I am all about every soup possible.  Summer = these.  This one was a spinach salad with grilled steak, feta, carrots, red onions and cucumbers… topped with ranch dressing.

IMG 5204

7.  A parents favorite thing—>  the 5 pm car nap (NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!)

IMG 5233 2

8.  She snuggled with Beretta when we got inside as she was trying to wake-up:)

IMG 5195

9.  If you were wondering, these are their mischievous faces.  I’m still not sure what they were up to but I am sure I will find out soon enough.

DSC04375

10.  The last soccer game of the season was Tuesday night (Knox couldn’t make it) and one of the parents brought Texas-sized donuts.  The kids were all on cloud nine.  Brooke told me she is more into swimming and running but as soon as she finds out that no one passes out these donuts to us at the end of races, I think she might be back to soccer for a bit.

11.  My mom and dad came to the game too.  Brooke had her favorite time-out chair to go to:)

12.  Brooke has inherited my necessity of having jam on top of a grilled cheese sandwich.  My family has done this for decades now and I’m happy to see the tradition continue.

12b.  Frozen grapes.

13.  Core work (I’ve gone back to this core workout and I’m loving it) post-run was done to this song on repeat.  I’m addicted to this one.

Any weird food combinations that you love to do?  One that your family always does?

Any new podcasts you are tuning in to?

Favorite type of cheese?  Anyone not like cheese?

Question from Andrew… what is your most recent WHOOPS moment (aka something you wish you didn’t do recently)?

-Andrew: “Ordering the wings at Dairy Queen… I need a reminder to only get ice cream there.”

-Janae: “Going to the salad bar thinking I would only spend $7 on lunch… and accidentally getting two lbs of salad instead ($7.50 a lb) or above waffle.”

My siblings used to put ketchup on rice………I thought that was sooooo weird. And my brother has been in a hot sauce phase for a few years now……………wondering if he will keep it up or outgrow it.

I like most cheese, but I think Swiss is my favorite…………the husband prefers provolone.
Recent whoops moment: Honey mustard vinaigrette is not the same as honey mustard dressing.

Running by the water is one of my absolute favorite things! It doesn’t matter what type of water (river, lake, gulf, ocean, etc.), I just find all of it to be so peaceful and natural.

Reply

Oh that blueberry waffle looks good. I might need to make one soon…haha maybe today.

I love running by the water but not when it’s windy obviously.

Jam on grilled cheese sounds interesting–I’m going to have to try that. I combine foods that people think are weird all the time. I put ketchup on pretty much everything (even carrots and apple slices), and one of my favorite snacks is Wheat Thins with avocado slices, ketchup and pepper. SO good.

Whoops moment: Trying to do too many things at once and accidentally knocking an entire plate of freshly baked and frosted cookies on my kitchen floor. Of course they landed face down so that all of the frosting became a huge mess to clean up.

Reply

NOOOOOOO ABOUT THE COOKIES!!! That’s the worst!! Okay, I need that wheat thin combo, sounds awesome!

My current favorite cheese is FETA. Put on top of a salad (especially if there is some quinoa + chicken thrown in there = amazingness.)

Right now, I’m not listening to any podcasts (I probably should!) but I am reading Daniel’s Running Formula and Hal Higson’s, Marathon: the Ultimate Trainig Guide.” Good stuff!

Oh my, I need that giant ? donut!

Hi Janae! I have been obsessed with the Tim Ferriss podcast, he recently interviewed Ryan Flaherty from Nike, the “Savant of Speed”. I think you would really enjoy it! So many of his guests that are in his recent book, Tools of Titans, are incredibly inspiring and thought provoking, I love listening to them when I run.
Weird food combos….pineapple and cottage cheese for the win!
Have a great day, Amanda

omg the 5 pm nap in the car! it was the worst when my son was little! actually, anything beyond 2pm was bad for bedtime lol. I would do everything I could to avoid it.

My family’s favorite/weird food combination is chili with pickles in it! Most everyone I tell about it immediately thinks it sounds disgusting….but once they try 1 bite, they say they actually enjoyed it! I love it so much, I won’t even consider eating chili unless there are pickles involved!

Reply

I’m not sure if it’s weird, but I love to dip grilled cheese in ketchup. Some people are totally with me on that one, and others think I am insane.

I just finished S-Town – OH MY GOODNESS. I loved it so much. Now I’m onto Serial…I know it’s way longer, but I loved S-Town so much so how could I not love it. One of my favorite authors Shauna Niequist just started a podcast – The Shauna Niequist Podcast. Only one episode so far but I would definitely recommend her and I will certainly be keeping up with this one.

I really think I love just about all cheese – except blue cheese. I think fontinella might be my favorite though. It’s a really sharp Italian cheese that I love to cut up in little chunks and put in my salads.

Reply

I love running by water too. I just love being by water in general. Oh god, S-town.. I binge-listened to it in one day the week it came out (as it was designed to be lol) and I don’t really know how I feel about it… interested to see if you like it

That donut looks like the size of Texas itself! WOW! Looks like a wonderful day!

I loved S-town! I hope you are already listening to the Runner’s World Podcast and Human Race(Also produced by Runner’s World) . . . . . .so many inspiring stories! . . . (Oh, and UltraRunnerPodcast!)

I love Colby jack cheese!
Feta for salads too.
I sometimes take my sea salt potato chips and crumble them on top of my salad. But then I have to eat the salad fast so the chips don’t get soggy.

The other night when changing for bed I realized I had my underwear inside out all day. Whoops!

My daughter does not like cheese! She likes it melted (grilled cheese) but that’s about it. She loved it as a toddler, but as a school age kid she no longer likes it. That’s just not right!! :)

Totally trying grilled cheese with jam! Weirdest thing… ketchup on butter noodles, so bad but so good!
S-town is suuuppeerrr interesting, just finished! I also love Serial 1 but def not the second Serial. I’ve heard Criminal is good.

Reply

My first thought was that sandwich is kind of gross but a Monte Cristo sandwich is similar with turkey. (I won’t be trying it anytime soon though) :)

Brie is my favorite cheese, hands down.

yes, I had coffee twice in one day. I drink it about twice a week, twice in one day was WAY too much.

My husbands family makes mayo and peanut butter sandwiches and I love him a little less for it ;) That is such a weird combo but apparently it tastes great?
I listen to a ton of podcasts – they are usually true crime or something in that genre. I finished S town in two days and loved it. I am always listening to Casefile True Crime (some episodes are really intense and I skip them). Last year I listened to Revisionist History by Malcolm Gladwell and really liked them – he is super smart and each episode is really fascinating.
I love cheese. We got into the habit of making a lovely cheese board in the evening with a glass of wine and then my pants started to feel a little tight …
Ha, this one is from my sister, not me: She entered a contest with a local nursing wear clothing store and didn’t read the fine print that said the pictures you submit will be posted online and the person with the most likes will win. She emailed them and raised a big stink about privacy and how you can’t post pictures without consent, and she is not interested in being in a mommy popularity contest, etc. Then she reread the contest rules and she is really embarrassed – I guess she can blame mommy brain haha.

Reply

Haha I grew up with pbutter and mayo sandwiches with tomato. I swear it isn’t gross!

I don’t like cheese!!! I feel like I am the only human who feels this way :)

Random question for you regarding your steak! How do you cook it because it always looks amazing? And how many times a week do you consume red meat? I have had to increase it per doctor’s recommendation and am looking for some yummy ways to eat it!

Thank you-Have a lovely day :)

That salad looks delicious. It’s hard to go wrong with raspberries.
I recently started listening to How I Built This. It’s about hoe entrepreneurs built their businesses. It’s really interested to hear about.

I am in the middle of S-Town right now and I am hooked! I thought it was going to be just like Serial, Undisclosed, and Up and Vanished but it’s surprisingly different and it feels more like a mystery mixed with a true crime podcast.

If you haven’t listened to Undisclosed, do so! Season 1 is about Adnan’s case and they have a season 2. They are doing smaller series right now as they prep for season 3. It’s so good, one of my favorites!

Reply

S-Town was amazing! So worth the listen. I also just finished Up & Vanished and loved it! Criminal is a good series! Each episode is about a different story, so a little different that the ones that continue the same story for a season. Also… loving Lady Gaga’s new song “The Cure” for running, core work, everything!

Reply

I really really really need to get a waffle maker. I’m not sure how I’ve lived this long without one.

Also, that donut. Just yes.

Reply

That donut is bigger than Brooke. I also love running near water – we have 2 rivers in Philly, plus a large creek and I am usually running near one of these bodies of water! The photo of Brooke and Beretta is previous <3

lol! the salad bars always get me! you think it’s cheap but it never is!

EXACTLY!! Good to hear I’m not alone:) Thanks Tiffany!

So my family’s favorite snack has always been popcorn with m&ms (but you must dump the m&ms in right after you take the popcorn out of the microwave). The chocolate is all melty in the shell and it is the best combination of sweet and salty!! It is now a favorite snack of pretty much all of my good friends. ? I think the grilled cheese and jam sounds delish! Growing up my brother and I would always have honey cheese toast which seems similar.

Reply

That sounds AMAZING… I think we have to do that this weekend!!! Honey cheese toast sounds amazing, thanks for letting me know about that. Thank you Christina and I hope you are having an amazing day!

Reply

I’m like you at the salad bar – I always spend way too much without realizing it! I just love veggies so I always come away with an overflowing container. I just can’t be trusted at salad bars!

Reply

Yesterday as I was eating my cottage cheese and watermelon post run snack I was wondering if anyone else in the world eats those together? haha

Reply

I mean I’ve never done that before but it sounds amazing and I’m going to have to try it ASAP!

Reply

I love running by the water and in the trees on trails… the perfect run is trail running and running next to a creek/river or coming to a lake… so peaceful!

I put ketchup on my macaroni and cheese and dip my grilled cheese into ketchup. My family has done it forever, but my husband thinks I’m absolutely crazy! My favorite everyday cheese is Gouda, but my favorite special cheese is Red Hawk cheese made by Cowgirl Creamery up by San Francisco. Every time we venture that way, I have to get a couple rounds of it… so yummy! My whoops moment was drinking a caramel apple spice from Starbucks before bed.. way too much sugar for this pregnant one! I was wired for half the night, but then again, I got a lot done so I guess there’s that!

Reply

I put ketchup on my mac and cheese too! I’ll have to try the grilled cheese! OH NOOOOOO about the caramel apple spice before bedtime but glad you got so much done haha! I hope you are having a wonderful day Samantha!

Hey!

Love your blog! S-Town is LEGEND a total must listen. Convicted is new and if you listened to Serial.. you’ll love Convicted as it has a lot of the same “characters” are at play.

Reply

Ohhhhh Thank you so much Grace for letting me know about Convicted… sounds AWESOME!!! I hope you are having a beautiful day!

Reply

I started listening to Up and Vanished when you mentioned it last week – totally obsessed. I’m on the last episode now and I almost don’t want to listen because then it will be over. I’m curious what you think of S Town. I didn’t get into that one as much, but I know everyone raves about it.

My mom used to make us cold cheddar and jam sandwiches. Grilled cheese and jam is taking it to the next level – I need to try this!

The other morning I went to my workout and then straight to work after where I’m lucky to have a shower. I brought my work clothes but realized I forgot my bra – whoops!! Had to wear my sports bra – luckily it wasn’t a super sweaty workout, but some days that would not have been an option!

Reply

I just can’t help but comment on how your constant KNOX IS HOME! proclamations. He was with his mom, not in prison. We get that you love your new perfect family, but you are so passive aggressiveness towards both sets of exes. I have no experience with divorce or step-families myself, but all of your unnecessary comments make you come across in a negative way. I hope you see this and think about it before this comment is deleted.

Reply

I don’t think she’s being passive aggressive! I think she’s genuinely excited that he’s home! I don’t see it in a negative way at all. It makes me happy to see that she loves Knox and loves having him with her.

Reply

Hi Bobbi. Having your children back after not seeing them for awhile is a very important part of our family and we are genuinely excited every time. She isn’t passive aggressive nor are we with our exs.

Reply

They’re all a team and he’s so loved. It’s amazing to feel that. You’re perspective is a tad misconstrued. Just let words of love flow from your mouth such as they do in this blog.

Evening car naps are THE WORST!!! It makes for such a rough evening!

My dad always used to make me Peanut Butter and Pickle Relish sandwiches, his favorite growing up. I thought it was totally normal until I got to school and everyone else had peanut butter and jelly. oops!

My favorite podcast of all time is Straight Talk with Ross (Ross Matthews, a.k.a. Ross the Intern from Leno). It is SO FUNNY. There is a lot of really inappropriate stuff and they definitely don’t watch their mouths, but I have been left crying from laughing so hard during this podcast on so many occasions. Highly recommend!

Reply

Definitely in the minority here, but I really disliked S-Town. I really disliked the characters and didn’t enjoy the story that much either. I listened to “In The Dark” before “Up and Vanished” and think they are very similar. I would definitely recommend that one. Joy the Baker had a good list of “True Crime” podcast recommendations last month if you’re looking for something in that genre: http://joythebaker.com/2017/03/my-favorite-true-crime-podcasts/

Your breakfast looks yummy! I am looking for a new waffle maker. Do you recommend the one that you have? Also, is it hard to clean? My last one was horrible to clean.

HEY MICHELLE!! My mom gave me this one a few years ago and I LOVE IT!! It is beyond easy to clean… I hope you love it too! Have a fabulous day!

Oh my gosh, that donut is the size of her head. I want to be on her team.

The weirdest food combination I have is carrots and salsa, which doesn’t strike me as very strange. When I was growing up my mom would put cottage cheese on her spaghetti, which I used to think was gross but now that I’ve come around on cottage cheese I can kinda understand it.

I started S-Town yesterday and I don’t think I’m going to keep listening :/ The story didn’t strike me as nearly as interesting as Serial, and it has a LOT of swearing. So if that bothers you, I would not recommend you listen to it.

Apart from the aforementioned cottage cheese, I am not a big fan of cheese! I especially don’t like it on salads.

I loved Up and Vanished. I thought S-Town was terrible. The first episode was okay, but after that it lost it’s spark. I feel as if the main character suffered from a severe mental disorder, and it was a tragic thing that the issue was not noticed through out the podcast. It was glorifying the impulsive behavior of someone who was clearly mentally ill. Try listening to Beautiful Stories from Anonymous People. Some episodes are a bit too inappropriate for me( episodes show what it’s about though, so the title reveals this) but some episodes are simply beautiful. It’s great to experience the life of strangers. Everyone has their own story.

Reply

That is VERY interesting Heather! Thank you for letting me know about that… and thank you for the recommendations! I can’t wait!!! Thanks Heather!

Reply

I’d give it to the end, Heather. Much more comes to the surface in the last episode or two.

Loved Serial and S-Town is great so far. Runners World Show is a good one and you can pick an episode here or there. Good interviews with regular people and elites. Usually has a synopsis to see what you’d like to listen too.

Reply

And now I’m hungry ;)

We do grilled cheese and jam too! I also love bell peppers with pb and some people think that’s strange. Mac n cheese with any kind of canned veggies is pretty yummy too!

S-Town was interesting. The language was terrible and it was sad, but still interesting. I’ve heard Convicted is good if you liked Serial, so that’s next on my list :)

My fav cheese is goat cheese, and does cottage cheese count?

Reply

Probably my biggest ‘whoops’ moment might have been agreeing to get this puppy :/

That salad looks so good. I need to switch it up. I feel like I become obsessed with a combo and I eat it all.the.time. until I am sick of it and then I move on. Right now it’s spring mix, fresh pico, guac, a turkey burger with chili lime seasoning and then topped with cilantro avocado dressing. Mmmmmm.

I locked my keys in my car after my Monday night run recently *facepalm* Funniest part is that I wasn’t sure they were in my car at first, I thought I had dropped them, so my whole running group was helping me look for them for like half an hour before I gave up and hitched a ride home to pick up my spare key. Sigh. Thankfully they still like me anyway ;)

Reply

Try Nutella on carrots!! The best!!!

(and jam on grilled cheese is delicious, I agree)
