SURVEY kind of a day (with a prize/package from me!!) + our Tuesday NIGHT!

Happy Wednesday! I hope your day is off to a beautiful start!  I decided today would be the perfect day to have a survey because these questions are very important matters to me:)  I cannot wait to hear your answers!  But first, I have to share a bit from our day/night!

Last night Andrew and I went out for our weekly (ehhh try to get out weekly just the two of us) date!  We went to see the new Pirates movie and we absolutely loved it.  It was SO intense but so good.

We also had to stop at Cafe Rio afterwards for the good stuff.  It had been at least 3 weeks since our last visit.

Brooke had a blast with grandma and they went on a walk, played cards and learned about birds.

IMG 6848

She is always in the best mood at my mom’s house:)

IMG 6851

My mom had us stay for some brownies and catching up afterwards which was fun.

IMG 6857

Oh and earlier on in the day we hit up the pool and enjoyed the sun!

I am in love with cherries right now.  I can’t stop.

IMG 6822

A smoothie afterwards was necessary because we needed to cool-down!

Let’s play a game today!  Answer these questions in the comments and I’ll randomly select one person that answered the questions (I’ll use random.org to choose) to send a gift package of some random food/running things:)  PS you don’t have to answer all of the questions to enter for package/prize… just half or more (and if you aren’t a runner then answer them about your favorite workout).

1. If you could have one meal that was in your kitchen and waiting for you to eat each day after your run, what would it be (for this meal we are pretending that anything/everything is fair game… it’s all healthy, nutritious and will help your recovery so say whatever you think would be the yummiest)?!?

2. Would you rather have to eat 6 donuts or a large burrito in the middle of your next long run?

Screen Shot 2017 05 30 at 8 34 00 PM

3. If I handed you a $100 gift card to a running website (that has EVERYTHING running related)…  WHAT WOULD YOU SPEND THE $100 on (details are appreciated)?

4. Fill in the blank:  If it is ________________ outside, I will not run outside.  Would you then either choose to run on the treadmill or not at all?

5. If you could go on a run with any famous person or famous athlete… WHO would it be?

6. If you could go back in time and choose any race that you have done in the past and have that same experience all over again, which one would it be?

7. If your best friend decided to become a runner today and you could give her one piece of advice, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?!

8. What is one weird/different thing you do during your runs?

9. What is your usual race/hard run reward afterwards? A food/drink/other?

10. What has been the biggest change in your running from when you very first started until now?

You can copy the questions down in your comments or just number the questions that you are answering:)

1. Nachos
2. Burrito, hands down
3. Sports bras
4. Slippery. I’m usually an outdoor runner, so usually that would mean skip the run.
5. Kristin Richard (Armstrong)
6. The first half I ever ran – the experience of the crowds cheering and bearing down on the finish line was really special!
7. Be patient
8. Recite poems/lyrics to get through the toughest stretches
9. Burger!
10. To find where running fits into my lifestyle. Missing a run isn’t a big deal when running is only one part of what I do for fitness/wellness.

1. Peanut Butter and Jelly?
2. Donuts! Both good options though ;)
3. I’m wanting some of those vivobarefoot shoes that are waterproof. I’m curious if you can actually run in them though
4. Tornado-ing? Then I would treadmill run. Don’t want to get Dorthy-ed.
5. Oprah maybe…or Tim McGraw? For sure not a professional runner, I don’t think I could relate and the pressure of running with them seems too intimidating.
6. Maybe one of the Ragnar relays that I’ve done. Ragnar Great River
7. Don’t compare yourself. Not to others, not to your past self. Not to yesterday’s self. Do the best you can do today.
8. I don’t think I do anything weird while I run. I often have solutions to work problems pop into my head but I think that’s a pretty common occurrence.
9. Burger!
10. I’ve been running for 16 ish years and it was really hard to think of many changes in my running. I do think I’m more aware of having the right gear now than I was back then. We could probably attribute that to being older, larger, and more financially able now.

Reply

1. A HOT americano and toast with PB/AB, banana, and granola on top
2.Ew to both, but donuts sounds more digestable
3.Seriously I’d probably buy socks since those go missing ALL THE TIME and I hate washing and losing them
4. If it’s a BAZILLION DEGREES out I will not run outside. Okay, that really means pushign 80F. And no, I’d not treadmill. SWIM!
5. Joanie Benoit, Kara Goucher
6. Either my IM race just because it’s so fun or my first 10km run when I was 10 years old
7. My advice: Run again tomorrow!
8. I don’t wear a garmin or headphones. No music, no exact measurement, no pace, no time. Apparently that’s weird.
9. coffee and free time. I don’t usually reward myself because actually doing something hard is good enough. I’m boring!
10. Let’s see, being that I was 10 when I started and I”m now 47 I’d say gravity, energy, and time has changed. Of course now I use running to reset, have free time, think, and be outside!!!

Reply

1. A protein smoothie.
2. 6 donuts
3. Definitely shoes! I would use it toward new trail running shoes.
4. If it’s below -10 or above 80 degrees, I would much rather run on the treadmill.
5. I can’t really think of anyone
6. None, every race is different and gives us new experiences that we learn from.
7. Consistency and strength training! (Sorry had to do 2)
8.
9. Whatever I’m in the mood for at that time
10. I’m a lot faster! I think it’s a lot of changes over time that resulted in this. Weight loss, being stronger, consistency, motivation, having people to run with.

This is so fun!
1 – Currently obsessing over avocado toast
2 – Donuts for sure
3 – Moving Comfort sports bras and Lululemon tanks
4 – I don’t run outside when it is icy. I usually put on winter boots and walk to our community gym two blocks away from my house and run on the treadmill there if I can’t run outside.
5 – YOU! Come to Bend, Oregon!!
6 – Boston Marathon 2008
7- Stretch after running (do what I say, not what I do!)
8 – I listen to a lot of audiobooks when I run and sometimes I get lost in the story and can’t stop until the end of the chapter. So I sometimes take an extra loop or two around the block when I get home. My neighbors probably think it’s weird.
9 – Burger
10 – I’m healthier and stronger now. I am trying to protect my knees and hips, so I run every other day and do strength training in between. I love the Sweat with Kayla App for strength because it tells me exactly what to do and is only 28 minutes.

Reply

1. Some sort of chocolate smoothie or a rice cake covered in almond butter and banana slices (kind of lame but I always crave something on the sweet side after a run).

2. Normally I would say large burrito cause I like burritos a little more than donuts BUT a burrito would make me barf in the middle of a long run and 6 donuts would work more like fuel so my answer is 6 donuts.
3. I would say a pair of shoes because right now I only have 1 good pair to run in. If I have any left over money I would find a tank on sale and buy that too.

10. Before I had my children, I ran and raced, but didn’t really know my body or embrace what I was capable of. I took a three year break while I was pregnant, working, and pregnant again. I got back into running once I found a gym with cheap childcare and bought a double jogger. Something clicked and changed in my running. I was able to push harder, go further, and truly love what I was doing. After my third baby, it was even better! I was in the best shape of my life and now I’m 15 weeks with #4. I’m still running pregnant for the first time ever and, well, I’m just more in love with running than ever. :)

1. I want a huge bowl of oatmeal….really thick and gooey.
2. Definitely 6 donuts. I can’t eat much during a run, but think simple carbs are the better bet.
3. I would buy socks. I love really good socks but have trouble justifying so much money on something so simple….
4. If it’s super windy, I’m on a treadmill for sure. I don’t have TV at my house, so watching cable at the gym is a great treat!
8. I do “airplane arms” when I run around corners. I used to smash apples when I ran under an apple tree, but almost fell multiple times and had to give up the habit.
9. If I do a really long/hard run, I like to go out for pizza and wine that night. I prefer delayed gratification.

How fun! Thanks Janae.

1. A bacon, egg, and cheddar cheese bagel sandwich with a side of homefries drizzled with ketchup. I LOVE my breakfast foods! Sometimes I crave sweet, but I think I prefer savory first after each long run.

2. Donuts because the burrito would most definitely make me have to hit the port-o-potty immediately!

3. A new pair of running shoes – Brooks Launch 4 and/or Hoka One One Tracers! (both are my go-to shoes)

4. If it is Thundering/Lightning outside, I will not run outside. I would run on the treadmill (which is most days anyway since I have a 10 week old son haha!)

5. Stephanie Rothstein Bruce because she is a bad-a** mother runner who I truly admire as she had a killer comeback , especially after her second baby boy.

6. I would relive my first half marathon whcih was in Pittsburgh because I felt so strong and empowered for the entire run and the weather was PERFECT that day (60ish and overcast with some light drizzle at times).

7. Well, my best friend already IS a runner haha, but if she wasn’t, I probably would tell her that there are good days and bad days but they all work out in the end if you never give up. Plus, running allows you to eat a ton more if you care about that sort of thing haha.

8. I don’t know if it’s weird/different but I have each of my running playlists tailored to the speed I go including slower tracks for warm ups/cool downs and fast-tempo ones for when I do speedwork or tempo runs. I even know what song will come on at what mile because I’ve listened to them so much (I rarely change the playlists, rather, I just make MORE playlists haha!)

9. I like to get a big, juicy cheeseburger with sweet potato fries – especially from my favorite burger place in my area!

10. I used to just run at whatever pace I could do when I first started (and burning out quickly since I would just run at basically my threshold for each run), but now I have easy days, speed days, tempo days, etc. and I can cover a lot more mileage now. Plus I also track my heart rate when I run which I didn’t do when I started.

10. I’m much slower now (age + ended up needing surgery at one point), but I enjoy running more, so I think that’s a win.

Ooof. Burrito. Veggie.

3. If I handed you a $100 gift card to a running website (that has EVERYTHING running related)… WHAT WOULD YOU SPEND THE $100 on (details are appreciated)?

1. Chocolate Shake! A HUGE Chocolate Shake!!
2. Donuts all the way – but if someone got to the donuts before me, I would still happily swallow a whole burrito. I might even chew.
3. First impulse is a different type of running shoe. I’ve been in Brooks Ghosts since I started running, and am curious about lighter Pure Flow shoes (largely thanks being your favorites). But I’m nervous to spend the money in case they don’t work for my feet. I’d also like a running belt to hold my huge phone, and I always love more colorful running tops and shorts, and I REALLY want one of the personalized mantra bracelets. My go-to mantra came to me during a rough run a few years ago, “I’m grateful for my body.” I could spend a lot of money.
4. Tornado conditions (I grew up in the Midwest). Yes, when I’m afraid of flying houses, I’ll run on a treadmill. Also high humidity – that drives me indoors faster than a tornado!
5. Living or dead? Hmm, living . . . wow, spending a lot of time thinking about this. I think Serena Williams. I would be too star-struck to speak, but if we’re running that might be for the best given the difference in our current athletic abilities.
Dead would be Amelia Earhart. I want to know what happened!
6. My first race, a 5K through the Bronx Zoo. All the proceeds went to an elephant rescue. Having trained mostly on the treadmill, I was completely unprepared for the hills and in agony after the first one! But when I crossed the finish line, it was the best feeling ever. I had made my goal – which was to run the whole time without stopping.
7. Congratulate yourself for every single run that you do. Seriously – especially when starting to build a running routine. Getting out the door can be so hard, as can continuing to run while arguing with your brain. So every time you come back from a run, give yourself a pat on the back. Be proud – you did a really hard thing today.
8. Okay, this is really embarrassing, but when I’m having a rough time and I just want to stop, I’ll pretend I’m winning a huge marathon against the elites. It gives me the push I need!
9. A donut and staring at my metal for hours!
10. I did not expect this when I first started running off and on a few years ago, but quite recently I’ve noticed that I’m actually looking forward to running! Never could have imagined I’d be at that place!

10. What has been the biggest change in your running from when you very first started until now?

I believe in myself a lot more now

1. Tacos!! Yum!!
2. Donuts!!
3. Running shoes… or running clothes… you can never have too much!!
4. Snowing. I’ll run on the treadmill.
5. Honestly, no one famous. I’d much prefer a good friend or just run by myself.
6. My first Half back in September. It was the Revel Big Cottonwood. It was a huge struggle from mile 5 to the finish. Not only physically but mentally. I’d go back and enjoy every moment… the excitement, the pain, the tears, the struggle. I’ll be doing it again this year :)
7. A great pair of shoes can change everything! And that the running community is AMAZING! No matter how fast or slow, fat or thin, first place or last…. you’ll have the support of other runners.
8. Not sure. I usually run alone so….
9. Tacos. Then a shower. And a nap. Lol
10. The biggest change is what I know about myself. I ran a Half at 240 lbs and if that doesn’t change you, I don’t know what will. Realizing that not only did I finish, I finish standing on my own two feet… I completed 13.1 miles even though I was carrying 100 lbs of extra weight, my calves cramped up on and off from mile 5 and walked the last 6, struggling mentally for most of the last few miles not thinking I’d finish until mile 11 or 12, watching as other runners ran past…. but most runners gave me a high five and encouragement, I had trained for this-the pain, the struggle… and as I crossed the finish line I realized that I can do anything! I can push through whatever lies in front of me and come out victorious. I can fight through the pain and tears, the frustration, the mental struggle…
I always dreamed of completing a Half but never thought I’d have the courage to do it. Not only did I have the courage but I had the strength to keep going even when I wanted to quit. I am what changed since I started running.

1. If you could have one meal that was in your kitchen and waiting for you to eat each day after your run, what would it be (for this meal we are pretending that anything/everything is fair game… it’s all healthy, nutritious and will help your recovery so say whatever you think would be the yummiest)?!?

4. If it’s -20 degrees Celsius I wouldn’t run outside. I’d hit up the treadmill instead.

10. I feel focused on running for the first time in my life this year. I had a broken arm and surgery around the first of the year that stopped my running, but realizing how good exercising and running made me feel got me right back on that treadmill with my cast (until I finally was cleared to run outside again). I feel like I am really improving and it feels fantastic to be running 1 mile an hour faster than I was last year.

3. Shoes. Because we can never have enough of those.
4. The wind is my nemesis. I’ll run in nearly anything else but wind is way too awful.
6. NYCM. I would run that sucker again tomorrow. Well…a few months plus tomorrow because I need a few months to train for it but damn it was fun.
7. Running is hard but it’s the most rewarding thing you’ll do for your body. Give it time and treat yourself right. Stretch every time you run, wear the right shoes and remember to cross train so you don’t over train with running. Give yourself time to learn to love it. Don’t expect to fall in love with running immediately. It’s a learned process but it’ll happen.
8. I dance. I do a little foot dance when I just can’t hold in the love and the joy I do a little foot dance. Just a little one….it’s a little dance and a little turn and then…back to running.

1. I’m actually never hungry after a run and usually have to force myself to eat something after a long one. But the day after a long run, I want to eat all of the things – I actually usually crave muffins for some reason.
2. 6 donuts, no contest! :)
3. Sports bras. Mine are getting quite old and need to be replaced for sure.
4. Stupid cold. After a very terrible run in -40C (-40F) a few years back, I realized that treadmills were invented for a reason. My cutoff temperature is now -30C (-22F). I will and have run in just about everything else: driving rain, heat, hail and blizzards (including one day where we got 51 cm/20 in of snow)
5. Lanni Marchant. She’s a Canadian Olympian who competed in both the 10k and the marathon at the Rio Olympics. She also is a full time lawyer and speaks out for women in sport. She’s pretty cool.
6. Philadelphia Half Marathon. Not my fastest time, but I was strong and confident the whole way through. The crowds were amazing. The medals had a little Liberty bell in them and it was a bit windy, so all you could hear in the finishing chute was thousands of these little bells ringing – truly magical!
7. Give it time and know you can do it. It’s hard in the beginning and you think you’ll want to quit, but ease into it and be gentle with yourself.
8. Sometimes I’ll shout out answers to questions I hear on my quiz-show type podcast while I’m running….forgetting that no one else can hear the podcast but me. I got some funny looks during my first marathon as I shouted out seemingly random things like “Jennifer Aniston” and “the Alamo”, lol
9. Beer. Definitely a cold beer (or two)
10. When I first started running, I would go as fast as I could, run out of breath quickly, and get frustrated. Now, I slow down and can run a whole marathon! Now that I have the endurance down, I’m working on ways to build in the speed

Hi Janae!
This is FUN!
1. ) My number one post-workout food is without a doubt INDIAN!! I am always craving spicy indian curry with a side of garlic naan after every workout. It’s become a running joke with me and my boyfriend since it happens so often!
2.) I would consider it a PLEASURE to eat 6 donuts during my next run haha.
3.)$100 to a running website would be a dream come true…I would seriously need a spread sheet to figure out what would be the best thing to go with. I think I would choose either a pair of Brooks running capris (I’ve been eyeing the Greenlight ones in the pink, yellow, and purple color), Brooks Cascadia Shell running jacket, or put it towards the newest version of the Glycerins when they come out!!
4.) If it is sleating outside, I would choose to run on the treadmill. I like running a drizzle, but if it’s a mix or rain and snow-no thank you!
5.) I would choose to go on a run with Sara Hall, to talk to her about her adoption experience since that is something I want to do, or Ellen DeGenerous-I just love her!!
6.) I would go back in time and run the race I actually just ran this past weekend-the Boston Run to Remember. I got a huge PR, and pushed myself harder than I have ever done before. It was not an easy race by ANY means, but I showed myself I can push through the pain and accomplish anything I set my mind to.
7.) My piece of running advice would be-get prepared. You are about to change your whole life! Running is a passion that flows into every aspect of life in the best way possible.
8.) I dance during my runs all the time. The music I listen to always has me pretending to play drums as I run down the street!
9.) When I finish a race, I always get a HUGE ice cream sundae!!!
10.) I have finally started doing speed work, and it has made such a big difference in my overall running performance!

1) Cinnamon rolls and/or donuts!
2) Definitely donuts! Burritos have too many flavors and I’d be so sick. Glazed donuts on the other hand…
3) Could it be $1,000?? Ha! Maybe a new race day outfit – a tank top and shorts with some balega socks.
4) STORMING. I’ll do heat/cold/wind/rain but not storms. I’d probably just hop on the treadmill for my miles.
5) Desiree Linden. She seems so humble and down to earth but such a hard worker
6) My half marathon PR! I have no idea what happened that day but the stars aligned and I ran such a strong race. It was a beautiful day in South Carolina and when we got home from the race we decided to put in offer in on our new house.
7) Have fun! Don’t ever outrun your joy of running.
8) I’m always doing math in my head during runs, even easy runs.
9) Pizza is my absolute favorite!
10) I’ve learned so much about the sport. I understand how to listen to my body and how different workouts provide benefits.

2. Would you rather have to eat 6 donuts or a large burrito in the middle of your next long run?
I would rather eat the 6 donuts. I don’t think it would fill me up as much and therefore not get a stomachache while running! (#IBSproblems ;) )

4. Fill in the blank: If it is ________________ outside, I will not run outside. Would you then either choose to run on the treadmill or not at all?
Extremely cold! I would rather it be too hot than too cold. If it is cold and rainy, forget it! I would run on the treadmill.

5. If you could go on a run with any famous person or famous athlete… WHO would it be?
Britney Spears! I’m assuming she runs sometimes.

7. If your best friend decided to become a runner today and you could give her one piece of advice, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?!
STRETCH! After a short warm up and definitely after a run! (And hydrate/fuel!)

9. What is your usual race/hard run reward afterwards? A food/drink/other?
A Nap!

1. My mom makes this chicken, cornbread, and baked bean casserole that is to die for. I never get sick of it and it always tastes amazing after a hard workout.
2. Definitely six donuts. I crave all the carbs while I’m running.
3. My sports bras are in pretty bad shape so I would spend that $100 on a few nice sports bras.
4. I’m like you, if it’s windy out NO THANKS. I’ll take the treadmill over wind any day.
5. I would love to go on a run with Michelle Obama or Chris Pratt :)
8. As I mentioned above, the minute I start running I am always STARVING. Especially on my long runs I probably eat more than the average person. I can also run on a full stomach and not feel a thing. I just love food. I also don’t love to listen to music when I run unless it’s a speed day. I’d take a nice boring podcast any day ha

1. BBQ ribs! And a donut…
2. 6 donuts for sure
3. More athletic material TANK TOPS! I hate running in short sleeves but most of the tank tops I have are cotton and pretty uncomfortable once I get sweaty.
4. Humid/snowing/extremely windy. I’m clearly a baby. Depending on the distance I’d move my run indoors and potentially switch out the workout I had planned for something better suited for a treadmill.
5. Carrie Underwood!
6. Cedar Point Half Marathon in 2014! I grew up going there so was in a very familiar place and had a really great race experience. The weather was beautiful, the views were pretty and I felt very well-trained.
7. Not every run has to be fast and not every run is going to feel good, but you should keep going so that more of them start to feel good more often.
8. Sing out loud while wearing headphones. This is more of an issue on the treadmill since I am trying to keep myself entertained but most of the time I don’t even realize it until I get the weird looks from people around me!
9. I really only race in the summer so I will usually have a treat, come home and make a big breakfast, and spend the day at the beach not really moving haha
10. I actually enjoy doing it and often crave it! I started running towards the end of high school when I was nearly finished playing organized sports but wanted to stay in shape and I HATED it, just didn’t really know what else to do for exercise. But I’ve learned to love it now!

1. There is a local smoothie place called Wheeze The Juice. I’d have one of their smoothies after every run if I could afford it.
2. I think I’d be better off with 6 donuts instead of a large burrito. They both sound terrible mid-run.
3. I’m currently wanting a hydration belt, new running socks, and the Oiselle roga shorts in black. I’d probably get the hydration belt first.
4. If it is lightning outside, I will not run outside. I hate the treadmill so I’ll just wait for better weather and run outside.
5. I’d love to go for a run with Ryan and Sara Hall, or Meb.

5. Unfortunately, new at this running thing and am not even in the know about who the famous runners are :/
6. About five years ago I ran in Portland at a random race through the intercity forest. It was so beautiful and the first time I really pushed myself running.
7. I need all the advice, I am still new! But for sure to get proper shoes. I was running in really old worn out shoes at the start and it gave me a lot of unnecessary pain.
8. Hmmm
9. Frozen yogurt is my weakness.
10. Like I said, I am a newbie and the hardest part was a lot of pain from not getting new shoes that worked for me. Lesson learned :)

1 – Acai bowl with all the toppings – granola, more fruit, coconut, etc.
2 – Donuts, definitely donuts. I mean..neither is ideal…haha but the sugar must be more helpful than the fibre of any veggies/beans in that burrito! omg
3 – I’m seriously considering that I spend it all on socks…hahah!! They are so expensive but make the run so much more enjoyable.
4 – I would only not run outside if it were too icy…and then I would choose the treadmill. This only happened once last year!
5 – Probably Lauren Fleshman … I just listened to the Runner’s World podcast with her and she seems so down to earth and funny. The miles would fly by I’m sure!
6 – I haven’t raced a ton, but my first trail race (28km) was super fun. It was so, so muddy and sloppy and I had no expectations or goals except to enjoy the run..and I did! It was so great. I ended up with an age category prize and have loved the trails ever since.
7 – Be consistent – while it doesn’t seem like it at first, running more regularly will feel better in the long run and help you prevent injury.
8 – I never listen to music
9 – Pizza. Thin crust, Napoleon style pizza. And a beer :)
10 – Getting a running coach this year has boosted my confidence and has already made me a stronger (faster, healthier) runner. A total 180 from where I was this time last year.

For my long runs I usually drive my course in the morning and drop water and fuel!

For marathons, I let myself but a new running outfit.

10. What has been the biggest change in your running from when you very first started until now?

I used to run by a local place called Skyline chili and it smelled soooooo good when I was almost done with my run so I’d have to say I’d like to ahve a couple of cheese coneys waiting for me.

4. Fill in the blank: If it is ________________ outside, I will not run outside. Would you then either choose to run on the treadmill or not at all?
WINDY. I *hate* running when it’s windy. I would opt for the treadmill. I can run in rain and cold and dark but wind makes me go nuts!

5. If you could go on a run with any famous person or famous athlete… WHO would it be? I’d probably pick Kara Goucher. She seems cool and probably has some great stories.

Umm…??? Probably my most recent run. The weather was perfect. I got to run the last 14 miles with a friend during her first marathon. We had a great time and I felt good afterwards.
7. If your best friend decided to become a runner today and you could give her one piece of advice, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?!
Get up early and get it done ASAP before anything else messes up your plans for the day.
8. What is one weird/different thing you do during your runs?
?? I don’t think I do anything all that weird.
9. What is your usual race/hard run reward afterwards? A food/drink/other? Sometimes I stop at Starbucks for a foo foo coffee drink :)

10. What has been the biggest change in your running from when you very first started until now? I’ve been running for TWENTY FIVE years so I cannot even remember what I was like at the beginning. For starters, I was a 12 year old scrawny jr high kid. I was *fast* and now I’m… not so fast ; )

A big plate of freshly cut fruit! Peaches, watermelon, pineapple and cherries just to name a few!

2. Would you rather have to eat 6 donuts or a large burrito in the middle of run?

Donuts! Just thinking about a burrito and running gives me heartburn!

3. If I handed you a $100 gift card to a running website (that has EVERYTHING running related)… WHAT WOULD YOU SPEND THE $100 on (details are appreciated)?

A new pair of Brooks Glycerin shoes. I’m due for a new pair!

4. Fill in the blank: If it is ________________ outside, I will not run outside. Would you then either choose to run on the treadmill or not at all?

Pouring rain or SUPER windy. I live in North Dakota so there is a lot of wind across these flat lands. I actually love running on the treadmill so with 3 little kids, I actually run more on my treadmill than anything else.

5. If you could go on a run with any famous person or famous athlete… WHO would it be?

I’m not really sure. It would definitely be a strong female athlete though.

6. If you could go back in time and choose any race that you have done in the past and have that same experience all over again, which one would it be?

My first Fargo Half Marathon. It’s my PR and I was in the best shape of my life. I remember crossing the finish line and seeing my husband in the stands and bawling. It was amazing.

7. If your best friend decided to become a runner today and you could give her one piece of advice, WHAT would it be?

Do NOT worry about your pace right now and do not compare yourself to others or your past. I used to be in much better shape but life and injuries got in the way. It happens! Get up, dust yourself off and keep going!

8. What is one weird/different thing you do during your runs?

Sometimes I dance if a good song comes on. haha!

9. What is your usual race/hard run reward afterwards? A food/drink/other?

A big juicy burger and fries. I figure I’ve earned it!

10. What has been the biggest change in your running from when you very first started until now?

I was in great shape when I started running because I was doing Beachbody workouts very consistently prior to ever running. Like I said above, life, moving and injuries got in the way and I am not in nearly as good of shape now. I have to remind myself that this is where I am now and the only comparison I can make is to the present. Tomorrow I will go one more set or go a little bit longer but I can’t compare myself to several years ago.

8. I’ll try to run on busier roads when I get tired. Knowing that there are cars going by possibly watching (even though they’re really not) motivates me to keep goof posture/form and a steady pace.
9. Kombucha! It’s so refreshing this time of year.
10. I’ve started running with people. It’s so nice to have the company (sometimes… I still like the solo runs best though)

1. If I could have anything waiting for me after each run, it would be a huge bowl of Pho. It is something that has become a tradition for me for my races. I eat about half before the race and the other half after the race (usually in a really hot bath, if I’m totally honest). It is full of protein and carbs and FAT and helps calm the ravenous beast the appears after a great run.

2. I’d rather eat 6 donuts. I’ve ran too soon after eating both, and for me, donuts are easier. Burritos are definitely a no-go there.

3. I’d get another fuel belt. I have one, but it includes water bottles and I’d love one for shorter runs that doesn’t. I’m too cheap to buy one for myself though, so I’m holding out for one for Christmas. I’d also get a good pair of sunglasses. I don’t have any that work for running, and I keep forgetting to pick up a hat. This has led to an avoidance of running during the day.

4. If it is REALLY HOT AND SUNNY outside, I will not run. I really don’t like extreme heat and if it is paired with direct sunlight, I hide like a vampire. I don’t have access to a treadmill, so running just won’t happen. I can brave the heat and humidity if it’s at least partially cloudy and I can find a shady place to run, but if there is direct sunshine I’m out.

5. I would love to run with Shalane Flanagan or Meb Keflezghi. Both are just so positive and encouraging and I would love to have a chance to run with them (even though it would feel like a walk to them, I’m sure).

6. My 1st half marathon (April 2017) was so emotional for me. It was ten years since the very last time I took an Army Physical Fitness Test (April 2007), which took out my right knee (for the umpteenth time) and led to the very serious discussion that I likely wouldn’t be walking unassisted by the time ten years had passed. Not only was I walking on my own, but I ran 13.1 miles in 2:43:42, which was over 20 minutes faster than my predicted time. My knee is most definitely permanently damaged (I’m on VA disability for it and a few other things), but the emotion of running this race ten years after I was told I wouldn’t be able to walk by this time is something that I will always treasure.

7. My best friend is becoming a runner (she says because of me!) and I did give her what I consider the most important advice: TAKE IT SLOW. There is no shame in walking, because walking now means you’ll be walking later. As someone who has spent pretty much their entire adult life struggling to be able to keep walking, this will always be my first and most important piece of advice for anyone who wants to start running.

9. I always drink chocolate milk after my runs. It is the only time I drink it, so it makes it special. After a race, my favorite thing to do is take a big bowl of Pho into the bathroom with me while I soak in a very hot bubble bath. It’s weird and it grosses my hubby out, but it makes me so happy. I prop up my phone and watch a movie while I eat and soak my sore muscles.

10. The biggest change for me has been my foot strike. I was a major heel striker and it led to severe aggravation of my knee injury. A great physical therapist told me that I could possibly change my strike and that might help. It took some major work, but since I was already being forced to re-learn almost everything anyway, it seemed worth it. Before, I couldn’t run a mile without major pain in my knee and now I can run a half-marathon without true pain. Changing my foot strike literally changed my life and probably saved my ability to walk.

7. Don’t try to go too far at first, and it will start feeling better very soon!!

8. I have to spit a lot. Gross, I know!

9. Coconut water and Greek food.

10. At the moment, I’m recovering from a stress fracture so I can’t run. :( When I started, I was younger and I never seemed to get injured.

1. Smoothie with spinach, almond butter, almond milk, chocolate, chia seeds and blueberries :)
or watermelon chunks with sea salt
2. Burrito but both sounds equally gross to try and get down.
3. Compression socks and another running bra.

9. Smoothies! after a hard work. Eggs Benedict or burgers post race.
10. Got smarter about it. Learned to be more consistent and the importance of easy runs. I just can’t go kill it 2-3 days a week anymore. I need higher mileage at lower HR to feel good and get better. But I am faster now then when I was in college.

3. Don’t know any full blown running sites, but I’d do Calia by Carrie, JCPenney or Dick’s Sporting Goods or Old Navy. I really need a light running jacket and new shoes but tanks and capri’s are just fun to get.
4. If it’s ‘sleeting’ and yes I’d definitely do the treadmill instead.
5. You !!! Does that butter you up to rig the drawing ! lol I’d choose Carrie Underwood for a quick pick, and I’m just not sure if I had to think about it. Really tough question.
6. The 1st time I ran a 5K without stopping. It was such a struggle to get to that point and so bittersweet to cross the line.
7. Advice – to go slow to enjoy the run and sport, don’t go kill it to be the fastest, it’s not worth the injuries, it’s about the enjoyment and mindset.
8. I don’t stop on odd numbers. If my Garmin says it’s 3.21 miles, I’ll go 3.22 I also do that with eating. never 1 bite, i’ll bite it in half so it’s 2. Everything is in even numbers, it’s a strong obsession. I also start running with my right foot, I put the right shoe on first, right ear bud in first, right leg in pants first. The right side must connect with ‘even’ numbers and left must be odd things. typing this out, I realize I have issues. And I’m ok with that.
9. Race reward – a fancy overpriced drink or juice.
10. Biggest change – figuring out what’s best for my form and pace, not trying to do what others do. Making my run, “my” run and being ok not comparing it to others.

10. Running is the first thing in my life that I wasn’t at least a little good at when I started. I was a fast sprinter, but I had no talent for distance. Through a lot of hard work, training, and diligence, I was able to take over 35 minutes off my half marathon time and run a sub 3:25 full, which I never dreamed I’d do. I’m injured now, going on 7 months, and trying to be patient, but I am craving a good training cycle in the worst way!

1. If you could have one meal that was in your kitchen and waiting for you to eat each day after your run, what would it be (for this meal we are pretending that anything/everything is fair game… it’s all healthy, nutritious and will help your recovery so say whatever you think would be the yummiest)?!?

–I have a serious addiction to a sauteed kale and roasted sweet potato egg scramble lately (topped with some feta). Like I could seriously eat it everyday. That would be a good one for me!

2. Would you rather have to eat 6 donuts or a large burrito in the middle of your next long run?

–Neither sounds great during a long run… but I guess I’ll go with donuts because, well… donuts.

3. If I handed you a $100 gift card to a running website (that has EVERYTHING running related)… WHAT WOULD YOU SPEND THE $100 on (details are appreciated)?

–A good sports bra! And a running hat. My poor sports bras have about had it and I desperately need to splurge on a good one. And I’ve been super into running in hats lately since my skin is so prone to sunburn in the summer. All of my current hats are not made of sweat resistant/wicking material so they make my head really hot.

4. Fill in the blank: If it is ________________ outside, I will not run outside. Would you then either choose to run on the treadmill or not at all?

–RAINING… I would use the treadmill instead. :)

5. If you could go on a run with any famous person or famous athlete… WHO would it be?

–Hmmm… Meb, Mo Farah, Shalane, Kara. There are so many! But I’d honestly really love a run with YOU!

6. If you could go back in time and choose any race that you have done in the past and have that same experience all over again, which one would it be?

–My half at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC was pretty darn awesome. I hit negative splits the whole time and chased the 2hour pacer like crazy! That one left me feeling really proud of myself!

7. If your best friend decided to become a runner today and you could give her one piece of advice, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?!

–There are so many things! But my number one would be STRENGTH TRAINING! So many people say it helps reduce risk of injury and they are so correct!

8. What is one weird/different thing you do during your runs?

–Hold my phone and use wired headphones… this would drive some people crazy but I like to be in control of my music easily and Bluetooth headphones don’t work great where I live. I’ve accepted it. HA!

9. What is your usual race/hard run reward afterwards? A food/drink/other?

–Some relaxation in my bed with Netflix on! And maybe my favorite Almond Pillow Cookies from The Fresh Market.

10. What has been the biggest change in your running from when you very first started until now?

–My pace has improved A LOT! I used to run an 11-12 min mile, now I’m running comfortably at an 8:50-9:10 pace.

1. Burritos. Hands down. I’ve never been to your beloved Cafe Rio but I would love to try it!
2. Ha! I hadn’t read this question when I answered the first. Burritos. Clearly. :)
3. I would probably buy new shoes, because mine need replacing. But I’m also really digging the Oiselle running skirt. I would probably buy one of those and possibly a new pair of shorts. I’ve never really loved running in shorts, but this summer I’m determined to find a pair that I love to run in!
4. HOT. I actually LOVE running on a treadmill. As a busy mom, it’s currently my only option!
5. I think I would probably be to intimidated to run with anyone famous.
6. I would re-run my first half marathon. My amazing friends cheered me on throughout the race. I never knew where they would pop up but they always managed to do so just when I needed them!
7. HAVE FUN!
8. I mostly run on a treadmill which some would hate, but when I do run outside, I’m extra cautious about bears. I’ve spotted many while running before! Which might explain my treadmill love. Ha!
9. I don’t like to eat sweets for breakfasts (cinnamon rolls, donuts, etc.) but I do love to have them after a hard workout.
10. I’m running for fun, stress relief and enjoyment instead of obsessing over numbers – weight loss or mile times.

4. Monsooning…. and treadmill
5. No idea! Tough question!
6. Probably the last 1/2 I ran. It was 15 weeks after I finished chemo and I wasn’t sure I’d be able to even do it when I signed up. I cried a few times during the run and crossed the finish line blaring “fight song”…. I felt SO STRONG during that race (and was still mostly bald!) even though it wasn’t my fastest time :)

4. A blizzard: The treadmill is a mental barrier for me, but I will at least do a short 2 miler at my fastest pace.

5. Mia Hamm

6. My very first race a little less than a year ago. I’ve now lost 100 pounds, but I was around 60 pounds lost. I was too embarrassed to run shorts even though it was a HOT day. I would tell that girl she’s strong and should be confident for her hard work.

7. Don’t beat yourself off. Go slow, check out C25k. My biggest mistake was thinking I could start out running a mile (some can), but I couldn’t and had a really time with that hurdle.

8. What is one weird/different thing you do during your runs? So…. everytime I run, at exactly the 2 mile point I burp and basically turbo kicks in. My body is weird.

9. What is your usual race/hard run reward afterwards? A food/drink/other? A tradition is to go to Roosters (a wing place) after hard runs / races. But usually, I just grab a bag of Annie’s Cheddar bunnies.

10. What has been the biggest change in your running from when you very first started until now? 1-0-0 pounds. :)

4. Raining… I would probably go with the treadmill as long as my planned run didn’t exceed 6-7 miles (my limit for treadmill running).
5. Reese Witherspoon. I just think that she would be so down to earth and fun to hang out with!
6. My first marathon, St. Jude’s in Memphis. I was such a new runner and would change a lot of things about that race.
7. Competition will still your joy! Don’t worry about anyone else’s speed or ability. Be proud that your body is an amazing piece of machinery!
8. I wear two pairs of thin socks. The first pair are thin toe socks with a thin pair of regular socks or compression socks on top. This has helped with blisters during long runs. I swear by it!
9. An ice cream sundae!
10. I’ve learned to listen to my body. In the past I thought I should run through the pain :(

9. After a big race, I love getting a big breakfast! Omlets or pancakes or a breakfast burrito are my favs
10. Probably my form, which has helped me big time in being a better runner. All my HS cross country pictures look like i’m dying bc my shoulders are hunched forward and my arms are way high up. After seeing myself run on the treadmill, I realized how poor my form was!

3. I’m wanting to get a hydration vest as I am wanting to run an ultra.
4. Icing. Unfortunately, if it’s sleeting/freezing rain, there is also no way for me to get to a treadmill, so I would just do some other type of exercise in my house.
5. Could I say you? You’re famous to me.
6. The St. Louis GO! Marathon in 2013. A friend and I were using it as our 22 mile (+ 4.2 miles) long run prior to running the Christie Clinic marathon that was a few weeks later. I felt great, we were relaxed and just enjoying the run. Another friend snuck onto the course and joined us for a few miles. We ran the marathon together and I just remember having so much fun. I even tried to dance when a good song came on my MP3 player. My friend and I actually ended up PRing during our training run. This is one of my favorite running memories.

3. An arm band big enough to hold my iPhone 6Plus – it’s too big for my amphipod and then I would buy the sturdiest running bra I can find. right now, I am wearing two to get the support I need. anything left over, some NuUn electrolytes because I sweat a lot during the summer.
4. If it is more than 80 degrees outside, I will not run outside. I would go to the gym to run on the treadmill or wait until the temp cools down to run after dark.
5. I’d run with Usain Bolt – not cause I’m fast (I’m the slowest of the slow runners) but because I like how he seems to joke around a lot on the field.
6. My first race – it was a 5K at Giants stadium.
7. Best friend, start slow so you can focus on breathing properly and building your stamina.
8. Weird thing? Did I mention I am wearing 2 bras? I also run up and down the same side of the street so the tilt at the edge of the road evens out and I don’t stress one side of my body
9. What is your usual race/hard run reward afterwards? I like a burger and fries after a long run but I just started running again so I haven’t worked up to those rewards yet.
10. When I started running, I did races all the time. I haven’t done one now in what feels like forever.

Great questions, Janae.

1. Kodiak chocolate chip pancakes
2. 6 donuts for sure! Both wont end well but the donuts would probably be easier
3. A good pair of running tights that don’t slip down while running and depending on how much those were probably a good sports bar or use the full amount towards a new Garmin
4. cold and/or really windy and I would end up running on the treadmill or doing a strength training session instead
5. I’d honestly want to run with you or Monica from Run Eat Repeat, I follow both of us and you are both so inspiring and motivating plus the conversation would make the run that much better!
6. The Air Force Half Marathon by far, I run it every year (except this year bc I will only be 1 month postpartum :( ) but the crowd throughout the entire race is incredible and really keeps you going. Last year the crowd passed out bacon along the course!

1. Cafe Rio salad or burrito! It’s my ultimate comfort food.

2. Definitely the burrito! I don’t enjoy eating most varieties of donuts, plus they give me a stomachache even when I’m not running

3. Moving Comfort sports bras! They’re the best for those of us who love running but are well-endowed.

4. If it is over 83 degrees I will not run outside. I’ve run in -10 before though. :) I’d go with the treadmill, but the elliptical is usually my indoor go-to machine.

5. Lauren Fleshman! She’s amazing, and I find her so easy to relate to, though my struggles have been on a smaller scale than hers.

6. I was running a race in China (my husband and I are Americans, and were living there for about a year) and I found out that the race was going to be longer than advertised by maybe a mile, so I was already kind of nervous about how it was going to go. But it was a lovely, flat course around a large lake, and it was lightly raining (which I love). About 1/3 of the way in, I got a bad cramp in my thigh, so I started slowing down. Just before an older man, maybe in his 50s, had fallen into step with me, so when I started falling back he turned around and waved for me to catch up. I barely spoke Mandarin (basically, just numbers) and he didn’t speak any English, so we couldn’t speak to each other. But through gestures, I realized he was wholeheartedly encouraging me to keep going, so I pushed through it and ran with him longer. Eventually the cramp eased and I finished the race better than I’d expected. The man came up to me after the race and we were able to talk a bit because my husband translated for us. It’s a special race to me because this man showed me that people don’t have to speak the same language to show kindness and support each other. Because of his help, I had a positive and memorable experience.

7. Run with a group to have fun until it becomes less painful, then run on your own to find out who you are.
