SURVEY kind of a day (with a prize/package from me!!) + our Tuesday NIGHT!

Happy Wednesday! I hope your day is off to a beautiful start!  I decided today would be the perfect day to have a survey because these questions are very important matters to me:)  I cannot wait to hear your answers!  But first, I have to share a bit from our day/night!

Last night Andrew and I went out for our weekly (ehhh try to get out weekly just the two of us) date!  We went to see the new Pirates movie and we absolutely loved it.  It was SO intense but so good.

We also had to stop at Cafe Rio afterwards for the good stuff.  It had been at least 3 weeks since our last visit.

Brooke had a blast with grandma and they went on a walk, played cards and learned about birds.

IMG 6848

She is always in the best mood at my mom’s house:)

IMG 6851

My mom had us stay for some brownies and catching up afterwards which was fun.

IMG 6857

Oh and earlier on in the day we hit up the pool and enjoyed the sun!

I am in love with cherries right now.  I can’t stop.

A smoothie afterwards was necessary because we needed to cool-down!

Let’s play a game today!  Answer these questions in the comments and I’ll randomly select one person that answered the questions (I’ll use random.org to choose) to send a gift package of some random food/running things:)  PS you don’t have to answer all of the questions to enter for package/prize… just half or more (and if you aren’t a runner then answer them about your favorite workout).

1. If you could have one meal that was in your kitchen and waiting for you to eat each day after your run, what would it be (for this meal we are pretending that anything/everything is fair game… it’s all healthy, nutritious and will help your recovery so say whatever you think would be the yummiest)?!?

2. Would you rather have to eat 6 donuts or a large burrito in the middle of your next long run?

3. If I handed you a $100 gift card to a running website (that has EVERYTHING running related)…  WHAT WOULD YOU SPEND THE $100 on (details are appreciated)?

4. Fill in the blank:  If it is ________________ outside, I will not run outside.  Would you then either choose to run on the treadmill or not at all?

5. If you could go on a run with any famous person or famous athlete… WHO would it be?

6. If you could go back in time and choose any race that you have done in the past and have that same experience all over again, which one would it be?

7. If your best friend decided to become a runner today and you could give her one piece of advice, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?!

8. What is one weird/different thing you do during your runs?

9. What is your usual race/hard run reward afterwards? A food/drink/other?

10. What has been the biggest change in your running from when you very first started until now?

You can copy the questions down in your comments or just number the questions that you are answering:)

6 donuts

Will Ferrell
6. If you could go back in time and choose any race that you have done in the past and have that same experience all over again, which one would it be?
Run for your heart 2015. My first half marathon. The image of my husband with our 5 month old daughter at the finish line ?. I ran for my grandma who passed away in June of that year due to heart illness.
7. If your best friend decided to become a runner today and you could give her one piece of advice, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?!
Start slow and monitor your diet, especially before long runs
8. What is one weird/different thing you do during your runs?
Wrap my right ankle. I haven’t had an injury in years, but now it’s just habit (or ritual)
9. What is your usual race/hard run reward afterwards? A food/drink/other?
Ice cream
10. What has been the biggest change in your running from when you very first started until now?
I run according to my body, not a watch. I used to be so focused on time and distance, but now I focus on how I feel.

Reply

1. Chocolate milk
2. Donuts
3. I’d buy a new pair of running shoes for my long runs.
4. side-ways sleeting. I love running on the treadmill!
5. Mirinda Carfrae!
6. Lewis and Clark Half Marathon in St. Charles, MO. The weather was perfect. The course was flat. The crowd was amazing. The is along the river. It’s perfect.
7. Get a good pair of running shoes- get fitted, have someone watch your gait, and listen to the person that’s fitting you.
8. I really like to surge up the hills. It makes me feel like Rocky.
9. Cheeseburger and fries.
10. I used to follow a running plan to every detail, regardless of the weather, my plans or how I was feeling. Those runs were about hitting distances. These days I follow a training plan that includes intervals, speed work and hill work and I follow the program according to my body. Life is a lot better when you listen to your body.

1. I could eat tofu and veggie stirfry after every single run. My absolute favorite meal!
2. My stomach hurts thinking about either one, but I think I would go for a burrito mid run over six donuts.
3. My logical side knows I would probably use a gift card for shoes because they are so expensive and getting a high quality pair is important. However, there are lots of smaller things it would be fun to spend it on, like arm sleeves, compression socks, handheld water bottle, buff, etc.
4. If it is icy out I won’t run outside, but I will hop on the treadmill.
7. My one piece of advice would be: Don’t get discouraged by how hard the first mile is. The first mile is ALWAYS hard, no matter whether you are running two miles or twenty.
8. One thing I do differently is that I never listen to music while running.
9. I don’t have a special post race treat, I go for whatever sounds good at the time. I do always eat popcorn in bed the night before a long run or a race though.
10. I used to hate running alone, I wouldn’t go as far and I would walk a lot if I was by myself. Now I love to run alone, no matter how far. Part of it was me finding my love for running (instead of it just being training for other sports) and the other part is being a SAHM to two preschool age kids. Running is the only time I get to myself now!

1. Costa Vida…I’m kind of addicted
2. Donuts!
3. Brooks running shoes. I’ve always wanted a pair
4. Snow and ice (darn Utah winters). I don’t hate the treadmill so lots of winter running is done on it.
6. I ran my first race with my little brother in 2014 right before he left on his mission and it was amazing. It was during the training for that race that I decided I love running!

4. Below 20 degrees AND raining/sleeting or above 95 degrees

7. Find someone to run with. It keeps you accountable and makes it more fun :)

10. Hmm…I run with people a lot more. I use to only run by myself but now I run with friends more which has enabled me to run further!

8. My run time = catching up on everything Bravo.
9. If it is an evening run, i love to relax with a glass of wine and watch dumb TV with my husband.
10. I first got into running as a way to rehab from shoulder surgery and because i had to fill my time that i used to spend pitching. Now it’s my favorite part of the day

8. Hmm…I don’t think I do anything weird or different, but I probably do.
9. All I want after a race is a burger.
10. All of it! I run so much better now! My pace is better, my form, and my speed! Speed still needs work as I got hurt, but it will come!

Reply

1. Tacos. Always.
2. Any other time in life the burrito, but I think the donuts in this case. Either way, the rest of that run would be painful.
3. I need new shoes but also desperately need a new sports bra.
4. Over 100 degrees and I would run on a treadmill, but I don’t own one (yet, hopefully) and don’t have a gym membership. I need to change that because I love treadmills.
5. Bernie Sanders for sure. Not sure if he runs, but we can always walk.
6. My first half marathon- City to Sea.
7. Don’t try to run too far or too fast at the beginning, just enjoy it. And run trails!
8. Lots of unnecessary mental math to distract myself. And meal planning.
9. Beer, chips, and couch time
10. I’ve stopped training for races (for now too busy with family) and just run whatever I can fit in for health.

8. I don’t know, not weird but new for me in the last 2-3 years that I do most runs with a group, which I love.
9. After my trail half marathon last week, it was beer, burgers, and salty fries (after a hot sweaty, hard run)

1. I would have to say tuna fish or chicken salad w/ plantain chips and fruit!
2. 6 donuts – I think the beans in the burrito would come back to haunt me!
3. I really want the new Brooks Ghost Capris, so I would put the $100 towards a pair of those!
4. Fill in the blank: If it is ___45 degrees or colder____ outside, I will not run outside. I would run on the tread, especially if I was in the middle of a training schedule.
5. Hm…Tom Brady
6. Probably the half marathon I PR’d at in November 2016. It was perfect weather, the course was beautiful and I was just so happy!
7. Mind over matter – running is just as much mental as it is physical. (I’d have a million other tips as well!)
8. Probably not very different but I don’t run with music. I like to listen to my breathing and feet hitting the ground.
9. My reward is actually the night before, I enjoy Fettuccine Alfredo for dinner (I know – it actually doesn’t bother my stomach like most people would think (especially with that cream and cheese!) at all and fuels me very well so I can’t break away from it, its tradition)
10. Biggest change has been incorporating HIIT workouts – my pace improved greatly!

If you could have one meal that was in your kitchen and waiting for you to eat each day after your run, what would it be (for this meal we are pretending that anything/everything is fair game… it’s all healthy, nutritious and will help your recovery so say whatever you think would be the yummiest)?!?
Ooh man, I think I would love a big burger and fries. I always crave something salty after I run.

2. Would you rather have to eat 6 donuts or a large burrito in the middle of your next long run?
Hands down a large burrito.

3. If I handed you a $100 gift card to a running website (that has EVERYTHING running related)… WHAT WOULD YOU SPEND THE $100 on (details are appreciated)?
I’d really love to get some fun running tanks. I get so hot when I run, that from about April on it’s tank top weather for me. All mine right now are plain and boring, but the ones I love seem so expensive!

4. Fill in the blank: If it is ________________ outside, I will not run outside. Would you then either choose to run on the treadmill or not at all?
Hmm, there used to be a lot of ways to fill in that blank, but this past training cycle I ran outside in pretty much ALL weather. Super hot sun, sleet, rain, wind, the dark. Even snow. But raining & 35-ish degrees would bring me inside. If I was in training mode, I would head for a treadmill, but otherwise I would skip it all together.

5. If you could go on a run with any famous person or famous athlete… WHO would it be?
I would probably say Matt Damn, ’cause I have a big childhood crush on him.

6. If you could go back in time and choose any race that you have done in the past and have that same experience all over again, which one would it be?
My HM PR in 2015 was an amazing experience. Cool, but clear day, I felt like I was flying. The last 2 miles were tough, but I ran a 2.5 minute PR when I wasn’t sure I had it in me! The miles flew by!

7. If your best friend decided to become a runner today and you could give her one piece of advice, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?!
GO GET FITTED FOR SHOES! OMG the right shoes make such a huge difference! And if your thighs rub together go get some compression shorts!

8. What is one weird/different thing you do during your runs?
I always wear sunglasses. I ran my first ever marathon in the rain and wore them the whole time. My eyes are super light sensitive, so there is pretty much no day that is too dark for sunglasses.

9. What is your usual race/hard run reward afterwards? A food/drink/other?
Longer races are always celebrated with a restaurant meal. Even if it just means Chipotle! No one should have to cook after a race! But I love a big burger & fries + a beer or other drink!

10. What has been the biggest change in your running from when you very first started until now?
I think I know more now, and maybe in a bad way. I ran a sub-2 HM on my first try, and had no idea that that was such a big deal for some people until years later. Now I feel like it’s kind of a mental barrier for me.

Oh my. Birthday cake with tons of frosting and flowers. With key lime and coconut ice cream from Flamingo Crossing in Key West. Wowza!

2.Would you rather have to eat 6 donuts or a large burrito in the middle of your next long run?
6 doughnuts, NO CONTEST!

3. If I handed you a $100 gift card to a running website (that has EVERYTHING running related)… WHAT WOULD YOU SPEND THE $100 on (details are appreciated)?
Probably new running shoes–can never have enough or stockpile enough

4. Fill in the blank: If it is ________________ outside, I will not run outside. Would you then either choose to run on the treadmill or not at all? POURING rain I’d try to avoid the treadmill because TM running hurts my body for some reason. I’d cross train that day. I’ve learned that missing one day of running won’t hurt me :)

5. If you could go on a run with any famous person or famous athlete… WHO would it be?
Oh my. This is hard! Des Linden or Jenny Simpson

6. If you could go back in time and choose any race that you have done in the past and have that same experience all over again, which one would it be? Key West 1/2 from this past January–it just all came together, I got an AG award, and it was gorgeous–my fav place.

7. If your best friend decided to become a runner today and you could give her one piece of advice, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?!
Listen to your body. Taking a day or a week off won’t hurt you if you’re feeling pain/a niggle!!!!!!

8. What is one weird/different thing you do during your runs?
I don’t think it’s weird, but I’m not sure if others do it. I love just being out in nature, and I’m constantly taking pictures in my mind of all of the beautiful things that I see. I love the inspiration.

9. What is your usual race/hard run reward afterwards? A food/drink/other?
A scone from Barefoot Market in Ocean City, NJ. We go for a week to OC every summer, and I buy a ton of them to freeze and pull out after a long/hard run. Their Mexican Chocolate scone is soooooo good.

10. What has been the biggest change in your running from when you very first started until now?
Confidence. I know I CAN do hard things. I know I’m PREPARED to race and run hard when I race.

6. My first triathlon. I was so proud of myself the whole time, and enjoyed all of it.
7. Buy good shoes and increase mileage slowly!
8. I get really into my music, and sometimes have to dance it out. It is good I run early in the morning before people are out!
9. Burger and fries.
10. I run for fun most of the time, unless I have a triathlon I am working towards. Running is just for fun/mental break/alone time now, not to cross a training day off the list.

Grilled Burgers

2. Would you rather have to eat 6 donuts or a large burrito in the middle of your next long run?

Neither….

3. If I handed you a $100 gift card to a running website (that has EVERYTHING running related)… WHAT WOULD YOU SPEND THE $100 on (details are appreciated)?

A subscription box!

4. Fill in the blank: If it is ________________ outside, I will not run outside. Would you then either choose to run on the treadmill or not at all?

Hailing I will run on the TM

5. If you could go on a run with any famous person or famous athlete… WHO would it be?

Kara Goucher

9. What is your usual race/hard run reward afterwards? A food/drink/other?
A Pepsi

10. What has been the biggest change in your running from when you very first started until now?

1. I’d have a huge smoothie waiting for me, but if I had to clean the blender, that’d be a deal-breaker ;)

2. …Eating 6 donuts in the middle of a run? It’s like you reached right into my dreams, & pulled that one out.

3. Nothing makes me happier than new sneakers, and I’ve been itching to get on the Brooks train (I’ve only ever run in Nike’s), so that would be the perfect excuse!

4. Take your pick: If it is icy, rainy, snowy, too cold, too windy, etc. I will not run outside. I’m convinced if I didn’t have a treadmill in my basement, I’d never get my runs in. I do love an outdoor run when weather conditions are perfect, though.

5. Why, Hungry Runner Girl, of course. Was that even a question?

6. I’d do my last 5K over, & push myself a little harder, now that I know that the person who placed first in my age group crossed the finish line right before me.

7. Slow & steady wins the race. Don’t go too hard, too fast. And for the love of God, foam roll!

8. I convince myself that I have a second set of runny legs (like how some people have a second stomach just for dessert), & when I feel like I can’t take another step, I tell myself that it’s time to use my spare legs. Works every time.

9. To reward myself for a hard workout, I let myself plop down in front of the tv that night with a HUGE bowl of buttery popcorn.

10. I NEVER used to stretch for my runs. At all. I convinced myself that it was better to work out for longer than waste time at the beginning and end when I could be burning calories instead. In January 2016, I found out that I had stress fractures in both tibiae. After having to rest for months (I kept trying to come back too soon, & re-injuring them), I now do yoga before every single run, & I foam roll immediately after. It’s amazing the things you suddenly have time for when the threat of losing something so dear to you is looming.

1. Either a peach/mango/green smoothie, or an Upstate breakfast from Gandolfos. Two very different meals, but things I’ve both craved after workouts/runs.

3. A Nathan hydration vest. (Something like the VaporHowe 4L Race Vest, or Firestorm Hydration Vest maybe).

4. If it is icy outside, I will not run outside. I would probably try to find a treadmill or indoor track, or cross train if I had the flexibility to do so.

6. My first Ragnar Relay. I joined the team THAT WEEK and was only somewhat prepared to run it because I had just run my first 10k, haha! But it was so much fun.

7. Have fun with it! Whether that’s finding the specific running workouts that you really enjoy and savoring those, or cross training with things you love.

8. …burp periodically? Because I have a sensitive belly / stress induced acid reflux. Yikes.

9. A good meal (note Gandolfos above, haha!), warm shower, and Netflix.

10. It was a casual hobby for years before but I started actually training with a coach for the first time just in February or March, and it’s become part of my lifestyle now. My weeks are now divided into easy runs, speed workouts, long runs, or rest days. It’s a focus and a passion for me now in ways that it never was before.

1. Pancakes topped with fruit and an almond milk latte!

2. Man, both sound terrible in the middle of a run, but I think I’d vote donuts.

3. I really want to try Adidas Boosts. Of course, $100 would only buy me one shoe, but still!

4. Freezing rain is basically the only thing that brings me inside to the treadmill!

5. I really love Shalane Flannigan

6. I LOVED every step of running the Richmond Marathon a few years ago. I felt so strong the whole race.

7. Take it slow and give it time. Running really sucks at first, so if it’s not love at first sight, don’t give up right away!

8. Well, this is a little different, but since I’m a breastfeeding mom right now I have to pump before I leave, so that isn’t a part of everyone’s routine!

9. A latte!

10. I am a crack of dawn runner. As the mom to two small children I like to train while everyone is asleep, so seeing 4:10am on my alarm clock is totally normal these days!

Donuts – is that even a question?

3. If I handed you a $100 gift card to a running website (that has EVERYTHING running related)… WHAT WOULD YOU SPEND THE $100 on (details are appreciated)?

A fuel belt with more than 2 water bottles – those go quick in the Houston summer and we don’t have water fountains

4. Fill in the blank: If it is ________________ outside, I will not run outside. Would you then either choose to run on the treadmill or not at all?

If it’s lightening, I will run on the treadmill instead. But I’m a weirdo who like the treadmill.

3. That’s hard because I feel like most stuff these days are over $100… But I’d probably get a running leash for my dog and new sunglasses! If it were for $500 though, I’d definitely get the new suunto watch with wrist HR!
4. icy or thunder storming. Depending on my goals, I’d either run inside at the track or do some cross-training, or just sleep in :)
5. Kara Goucher!!!
6. NYC Marathon. Even though I got sick during my training and wasn’t in the shape to race it, I wouldn’t change a thing. I had so much fun experiencing the city and people and loved finding my friend and boyfriend throughout the course and was so happy to see my parents in the grandstands at the finish! It was such a cool race and weekend!
7. Some days you are going to SUCK at running. That doesn’t mean you suck at running, it just means that day wasn’t your day. Shake it off and crush it the next day! Everyone has bad runs!
9. Ben and Jerry’s ice cream!

6 donuts
2. If I handed you a $100 gift card to a running website (that has EVERYTHING running related)… WHAT WOULD YOU SPEND THE $100 on (details are appreciated)?
A pair of Brooks Launch shoes

4. Fill in the blank: If it is ________________ outside, I will not run outside. Would you then either choose to run on the treadmill or not at all?
Windy. I would run on the treadmill instead.
5. If you could go on a run with any famous person or famous athlete… WHO would it be?
Kara Groucher
6. If you could go back in time and choose any race that you have done in the past and have that same experience all over again, which one would it be?
The 7 Bridges half Marathon in Chattanooga TN I felt really strong most of the race.
7. If your best friend decided to become a runner today and you could give her one piece of advice, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?!
Follow a training plan religiously and give yourself a lot of grace

8. What is one weird/different thing you do during your runs?
My pace is pretty erratic because I will start thinking about things or get distracted.
9. What is your usual race/hard run reward afterwards? A food/drink/other?
I need to choose one!
10. What has been the biggest change in your running from when you very first started until now?

1. Chinese food EVERY time; I think it’s the rice I love :)
2. Definitely the burrito
3. The new Brooks Ravenna
4. Sleeting and I wouldn’t run at all because I would have to drive to a treadmill
5. I think you’re famous Janae; can we run together? :)
7. Consistency – just stick with it as it becomes easier and more addictive. Also, get appropriate attire and shoes!
9. A really good meal – don’t worry about if it’s healthy or not
10. I am definitely faster, my desire has grown to maintain the running and early on, I ran by myself. Now I have discovered fellow runners who are my friends.

1. Definitely an Ihop omelet with pancakes. They are the best!!
2. I’d for sure choose the 6 donuts. A burrito sounds like a stomach problem waiting to happen.
3. Ohh I would spend a $100 gift card on a new hydration vest for my trail runs!
4. If its hailing or any temperature below zero I will not run outside. And yes to the treadmill because i’ll take those endorphins however I can get them!
5. I would love to run with Killian Jornet or Emelie Forsberg…if I could keep up with them that is.
6. I would go back to the Greenwood Furnace trail half marathon and relive that experience. It rained 90% of the race but the scenery was extraordinary and I felt so strong.
7. If something feels off take a break! That way it doesn’t have to turn into an even bigger break down the road. I know that running becomes an obsession and we just want to run ALL the miles but we have to remember to approach running as an ultramarathon and not a sprint!
8. I can’t think of one.
9. Ice cream!! And any other dessert laying around!
10. I now know that rest days are just as important as training days if not more important. And also that easy runs need to make up the majority of our training or else we’ll get burnt out or injured.

Reply

1. Cooked kale, fried egg and a biscuit. Doesn’t sounds nearly as tasty as it is.
2. Donuts- I get crazy manic sugar highs and would run super fast until I passed out.
3. Comfy sneakers (I’d bring back the Brooks Ghost 8 in fantasy land) or UPF long sleeve shirt that breathes
4. Icy ground or freezing rain
6. A turkey trot I did with my dad – his first and only race. We walked it together, but he got so excited at the end, that he sprinted away at the finish!
7. Cross train, leave time for recovery and find a shoe that makes your feet happy!
8. Snap pictures of ducks and turtles I see on the trails. I swear my camera roll has more pictures of ducks in the same spots than family/friends!
9. Popsicles in the summer, cocoa or coffee in the winter.
10. Being a little gentler on my body, as I’m currently recovering from injuries.

Reply

1. I find this to be the toughest question because it really all depends on the time of the workout, early morning would have to be banana pancakes, midday or after work workout: spaghetti

2. 6 donuts I would hope the sugar would give me an extra kick to finish at least

3. Definitely another pair of running shoes

4. Pouring Rain, me and the treadmill are not friends so I would go 50/50 treadmill or not at all

5. Serena Williams
6. Hampton Beach half, Hampton NH

7. Dont put too much pressure on yourself at first to be a step ahead of where you are, just stick with it and progression will happen :)

8. I set short little goals during it, like make it around the loop then to the next tree and then that building, its helped me go farther than I plan on most runs.
9. Both I love a good meal with a glass of bubbles to celebrate
10. I just enjoy it now, I dont put too much pressure on myself to run a certain pace or beat my last run, I just go out and run, if I’m not feeling it during a run I plan to just complete it and don’t push myself, but I’ve noticed I actually run faster now than I use to

Reply

1. Veggie and cheese omelette and hashbrowns
2. Definitely donuts. WIthout a doubt.
3. A headlamp for my 100 mile ultra training! And some new socks and sports bras!
4. Icy. I’d definitely hit the treadmill and watch some Netflix.
5. Kara Goucher or Kristen Armstrong….that’s tough.
6. Ironman Louisville. It was my first (of two) Ironmans and it was AMAZING!
7. Don’t quit.
8. I don’t listen to music. Ever. Lots of people think that’s weird…
9. Pizza and hard cider.
10. I’m much more willing to take bigger risks. I’m also much faster than I’d ever thought I’d be!

A huge veggie scramble with poached eggs with tons of avocado and smoked salmon with a green smoothie on the side and a soy misto coffee

2. Would you rather have to eat 6 donuts or a large burrito in the middle of your next long run? 6 donuts, definitely. Sugar rush!! Gross to the burrito sitting like a lump in your belly. UGH.

3. If I handed you a $100 gift card to a running website (that has EVERYTHING running related)… WHAT WOULD YOU SPEND THE $100 on (details are appreciated)? Proper running shoes…never been fitted for the “right” ones. Also a running tank that doesn’t ride up and is flattering.

4. Fill in the blank: If it is ________________ outside, I will not run outside. Would you then either choose to run on the treadmill or not at all?
Monsooning. I’d run on the treadmill, or do another indoor workout like spin

5. If you could go on a run with any famous person or famous athlete… WHO would it be? Do you count? But seriously! I’d love to run with you! Usain Bolt would be fun, too. If he walked :)

6. If you could go back in time and choose any race that you have done in the past and have that same experience all over again, which one would it be? My first half marathon

7. If your best friend decided to become a runner today and you could give her one piece of advice, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?! You never regret a run. Just START. Tell yourself you can quit after a mile (you won’t!)

8. What is one weird/different thing you do during your runs? I walk for at least 15 seconds after each mile. It gets me through.

9. What is your usual race/hard run reward afterwards? A food/drink/other? Pedicure for sure :)

10. What has been the biggest change in your running from when you very first started until now? I don’t get nearly as sore and am SO much faster

I hope I win! I never fill these out, and this was fun! :) Thanks!!

Fun little survey! Thanks Janae!
1. Cafe Rio Pork Salad.
2. Definitely 6 donuts, I don’t think I could handle a large burrito.
3. You can’t get very much with $100… If everything was say $20 or less WITH the gift card… So I’m basing my answer with the assumption that everything (including shoes) is $20. :) I would get 2 pairs of running shoes, a pair of spandex running shorts (cause I just can’t handle the loose running shorts), a new tank top to run in, AND a new running watch.
4. If it is 85+ outside, I will not run outside. I’ve ran in 109 degree heat for a relay race, and I hated it and felt disgusting. So I would run on the treadmill ONLY if I had constant fans on me.
5. I’ve never thought of who I would run with… I don’t do well meeting famous people, I would love to go on a run with you or Monica (Run eat repeat).
6. Running the Dopey Challenge. By far my favorite race experience!
7. Go slow and keep with it. Progress is progress no matter how small.
8. I walk (which is neither different or weird) and use mantras to get me through each mile.
9. A drink (Dr. Pepper) and donut.
10. Distance, and doing it solo. I don’t have many running friends so I have had to push myself to train and keep myself accountable.

Honestly, I have to stick to my tried and true favourites – a big bowl of oatmeal or eggs. Maybe the oatmeal could be topped with chocolate and brownies, though ; )

2. Would you rather have to eat 6 donuts or a large burrito in the middle of your next long run?

Definitely six donuts! I remember eating Mexican before a run and my guts were not happy. I will spare you the details but seriously, burritos (especially with beans…) are not pleasant when you are trying to sprint up a hill.

3. If I handed you a $100 gift card to a running website (that has EVERYTHING running related)… WHAT WOULD YOU SPEND THE $100 on (details are appreciated)?

I would go on the Running Room! As much as I love Lululemon, you can’t really buy anything for $100 so… No. I want to get more bang for buck! I would buy more running tank tops and shorts for summer.

4. Fill in the blank: If it is ________________ outside, I will not run outside. Would you then either choose to run on the treadmill or not at all?

If it is monsooning (or pouring rain sideways) outside, I will not run outside. I would choose my treadmill and watch YouTube videos!

5. If you could go on a run with any famous person or famous athlete… WHO would it be?

Kara Goucher, hands down! I think she is so inspiring and is such a fearless woman in the running community.

6. If you could go back in time and choose any race that you have done in the past and have that same experience all over again, which one would it be?

Probably my first half marathon in 2012, the Bank of Montreal Half Marathon in Vancouver. It was such an amazing day and I felt on top of the world after that. Either that race or the Scotiabank Half Marathon because my whole family was there at the finish line & we went out for burgers and fries after : )

7. If your best friend decided to become a runner today and you could give her one piece of advice, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?!

Have fun with running and don’t put too much pressure on yourself. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the miles, time goals, numbers, and everything that comes along with it, but it’s more beneficial to be patient with yourself and understand that it takes time to progress!

8. What is one weird/different thing you do during your runs?

I will count cars that pass by, or people. It keeps my mind occupied, and sometimes I will think things like, “If I see a bird fly by me then I know I am on the right path.” Then a bird will fly by and I will feel super “omg I am so in tune with the world.” LOL. Weird, I know.

9. What is your usual race/hard run reward afterwards? A food/drink/other?

I will either treat myself to a pedicure after a super hard run, but on race days Ryan and I go out for breakfast. It is our post-race tradition and something I think we both look forward to after an early morning!

10. What has been the biggest change in your running from when you very first started until now?

My mindset and my appreciation for my body, hands down. I used to be so concerned about just getting the miles in. I would run a lot of “junk” miles that were not serving a purpose. While I still love to get the miles in, now I try to have more intention behind my workouts. Speed, hills, long run, cross training. And now I am appreciating my body for ALLOWING me to do these workouts instead of trying to CHANGE my body with the workouts.

1. Any meal? Probably fruit already peeled, sliced, cleaned, layed out on plate, etc.
2. Eat the donunts. Ive went for a run after eating chips & guacamole and that was terrible. Lesson learned!
3. I would buy a new garmin watch. Im still using the Forerunner 10. My 12yr old has a better watch than me. She has the Forerunner 15 :)
4. If it was already RAINING, I will not run outside. I don’t mind getting rained on while I’m out. That happens, but having the motivation to even start in the rain. YUP! not that dedicated. Take me to the treadmill!
5. I would run with Meb! I got to meet in briefly in Chicago on year and I seen him run his last Boston. I appreciate his dedication and respect for the basics of running.
6. The St. Louis GO! in April 2014. I ran the marathon relay will friends/family. everything went wrong. It was super hot. They race redirected runners. We thought people were lost. I got a chance to run with people that day that it was their “goal” to finish. But we made memories!
7. My advice. Don’t stop. Keep moving. It does get better. I PROMISE!!!! You may never “love” to run but you’ll love the way you feel AFTER you run!
8. I think a different thing I do is I don’t run with music. It may not be weird but it started as a safety issue. I have a lot of 18 wheelers drive by my house and not getting run over is a plus in my book. Now I just run and I don’t even realize what I’m thinking about. I just zone out.
9. Post race…chocolate milk! is a favorite of mine.
10. Biggest change: the reason why I run. When I first start it was fitness goals, PR’s, etc; Now-I just want to finish, and not be lapped by my daughter in the process.

4. Fill in the blank: If it is ________________ outside, I will not run outside. Would you then either choose to run on the treadmill or not at all?
Too sunny and hot (I am already one giant freckle). And i would then opt for the dreadmill and pump that incline UP!
5. If you could go on a run with any famous person or famous athlete… WHO would it be?
Tom Hanks. We’d take pics of all the single shoes and gloves of the world. Hanx.
6. If you could go back in time and choose any race that you have done in the past and have that same experience all over again, which one would it be?
Jack and Jill Downhill. I had just broken up with my long time boyfriend and I took this trip out to seattle for a solo trip. I was the happiest and freest that i’ve ever been and I had a 15 minute PR that day. It was incredible.
7. If your best friend decided to become a runner today and you could give her one piece of advice, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?!
Don’t ever take it too seriously. Except for recovery–take that seriously (I need to heed my own advice.) Oh, and the protein powder right in front of your face at Trader Joes is delicious and cheap and knocks the socks off of all other protein powders I’ve experimented with since day one.
8. What is one weird/different thing you do during your runs?
If I am bored and want the run to be over with quicker, I’ll just pick up my pace to make it end sooner. =)
9. What is your usual race/hard run reward afterwards? A food/drink/other?
Red wine.
10. What has been the biggest change in your running from when you very first started until now?

I love oatmeal with fruit (banana, or apple usually) after a run and a side of scrambled eggs. Even though I usually run in the evening – I enjoy breakfast food after a run.

2. Would you rather have to eat 6 donuts or a large burrito in the middle of your next long run?
Burrito. The donuts would be too greasy.

3. If I handed you a $100 gift card to a running website (that has EVERYTHING running related)… WHAT WOULD YOU SPEND THE $100 on (details are appreciated)?

Probably new sneakers and some sort of light to wear in the dark that shines on the path in front of me. Just not one that you wear on your head – I find them uncomfortable. Plus a whistle that doesn’t make a click, click noise when you shake it. I like quiet when running (as much as possible – to really zone out and just run).

4. Fill in the blank: If it is ___Snowing_____________ outside, I will not run outside. Would you then either choose to run on the treadmill or not at all?
Would then prefer the treadmill if my energy level is up – in other words, if the snow has not made me feel housebound.

Ryan Gossling. Only because I would want to do anything with him.

6. If you could go back in time and choose any race that you have done in the past and have that same experience all over again, which one would it be?

No races for me. Just running on my own in the neighborhood.

7. If your best friend decided to become a runner today and you could give her one piece of advice, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?!
Find the right pair of sneakers to suit her feet/body.

8. What is one weird/different thing you do during your runs?
I have no idea. I just try to finish successfully. I never really consider myself a runner, I consider myself as someone who tries to run.

9. What is your usual race/hard run reward afterwards? A food/drink/other?
I am more motivated to eat very healthy after a run. I rarely go a day without a sweet something or other, so after a run I focus on healthy food. On a non running day, I always have treats. I figure I will burn it off the next time I run.

10. What has been the biggest change in your running from when you very first started until now?
My breathing capacity is so much better. It feels great.

6 donuts, hands down.

Either a new Garmin or a new pair of shoes (Mizuno Wave Riders are my favorite).

Raining; I would instead do a fun dance workout video…even though I have zero rhythm.

Ok, so I never win these things, but these questions were so fun so I am going for it!!!!
1. Homemade buttermilk pancakes (I have the best recipe)
2. 6 donuts – I do not even like burritos so that was a no brainer
3. Hmm…a toss up between a new pair of Brooks Launch and a new handheld water bottle and Feetures socks
4. Freezing like under 10 degrees- which is never going to be the case in south Florida so I am good. In that case though I would treadmill it if I had access.
5. I would actually MUCH rather go for a run with one of my favorite bloggers (you would be on that list) instead. I feel like I would be WAY less nervous and have a lot more fun!!!
6. My Richmond Marathon 2013. Not only because it was my PR, but I also felt SO good and negative split. I also did better than my A goal. It was really a dream race for me that day!
7. Just love it! Sign up for a race either with a friend or in a place that you really want to see and enjoy the whole process. Get involved with the running community and you will never want to stop!
8. ??? I don’t do anything weird that I know of, but I also 90% of my running by myself so maybe its just no one is there to tell me.
9. No real rewards…I just have what I want :). Usually right after a race there is not that much that I want…but the next day I am all about having whatever I crave.
10. SO many changes!!!

Those are just a few that come to mind :)

3. OISELLE! I’m crazy about the FlyOut line – perfect for hot weather and I love how non-clingy the tops are.

4. ICED OVER. Yep, that’s when I head to the treadmill.

5. Joan Benoit, one of my running heroes.

6. Probably one of the 4 x 800 relays I did in high school. Our team was really successful, and I’d love to re-experience that speed and excitement.

7. The first mile never feels great. Give it at least two miles before you decide how you feel during a run.

8. On an out-and-back run, I always have to run EXACTLY the same way back that I came: cross at same street, take same angles, etc.

9. A cold glass of water + Nuun and some JasYoga videos for stretching. Ahhhh……

10. I’m a masters runner now, so I pay a lot more attention to “prehab” – with strength training, dynamic warmups, specific PT stuff for any tight areas. Injuries are no joke as you get older (I’m 43!) so I make sure to put in the time even when I don’t want to so that I can stay out there on the roads and trails.

Thanks for a fun survey!

1. If you could have one meal that was in your kitchen and waiting for you to eat each day after your run, what would it be (for this meal we are pretending that anything/everything is fair game… it’s all healthy, nutritious and will help your recovery so say whatever you think would be the yummiest)?!?
Sushi!!!
2. Would you rather have to eat 6 donuts or a large burrito in the middle of your next long run?
Large burrito and pretend the eggs are helpful protein
3. If I handed you a $100 gift card to a running website (that has EVERYTHING running related)… WHAT WOULD YOU SPEND THE $100 on (details are appreciated)?
New sports bra, tank, shorts and shoes! All decked out!
4. Fill in the blank: If it is _a tornado_ outside, I will not run outside. Would you then either choose to run on the treadmill or not at all?
Probably not at all because I’d be pretty worried about why there’s a tornado in Colorado!
5. If you could go on a run with any famous person or famous athlete… WHO would it be?
Bobbi Gibb because I LOVE rebels.
6. If you could go back in time and choose any race that you have done in the past and have that same experience all over again, which one would it be?
My very first half marathon, the Other Half in Moab. That was the first time I truly realized what I was capable of and had SUCH a rush!
7. If your best friend decided to become a runner today and you could give her one piece of advice, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?!
Take is slow and be patient with yourself.
8. What is one weird/different thing you do during your runs?
I like to think I’m a perfectly normal runner. :) I sing to the best songs and am definitely racing myself all the time.
9. What is your usual race/hard run reward afterwards? A food/drink/other?
Beer after a race, chocolate milk after a hard run.
10. What has been the biggest change in your running from when you very first started until now?
I first started as a sprinter and now I’m mostly focused on half marathons. I use running more for my mental and emotional health now rather than physical.

1. A turkey sandwich with avocado, lettuce and onions. LOVE avocado!!
2. If I had to eat one or the other, I would have to say 6 donuts.
3. New running shows, I want to get the new Brooks PureFlow or Brooks Launch and sports bras and tops.
4. If it is FREEZING RAIN OR SNOWING outside, I will not run outside. I would go to the gym and run on the treadmill. =) I don’t mind running on the treadmill. That is typically my go to in the winter months.
5. Hmm, this is hard. I think if I could run with a famous person, it would Jennifer Lawrence. I think she would be a fun person to talk with during a run and might make it a bearable run.
6. If I could go back to a race, I think it would be first ever race I ran. It was a 10k and I was new to the racing world of running. I was more than ready to run the race but I soon learned that I need work on figuring out how to pace myself and not push as hard as I can in the first mile. I burnt myself out but it was a good learning experience because I was determined to correct my mistakes and I think that is when I fell in love with running. It is a trial and error sport.
7. I would tell her to take her time, listen to her body and learn from her mistakes (HA, goes hand in hand with what I learned after my first race :)). And remember to stretch before and after a run!
8. I typically make crazy faces during my run or tend to look down when I am running (cause I am clumsy and will trip over everything). My goal is to start looking up during my races so I can enjoy the scenery and the crowds. I tend to go into autopilot when I am running.
9. My reward is usually a nap! haha, but once I am recharged, it is a big meal and glass of wine!
10. The biggest change would have to be listening to my body. I used to just get outside and hit the pavement, no warm up whatsoever or stretching and that worked when I was younger. Now I have pains in places I didn’t know could hurt haha. But I definitely changed how I start my runs and how I end them, I try and work up to a good pace versus running hardcore in the beginning. I also changed how I refuel and re-hydrate during and after runs. I am working on taking care of my body better when I am running. =)

1. Pizza… hands down!
2. 6 donuts! We have the Krispy Kreme race here in Raleigh (the goal is run 2.5 miles from NCSU to Krispy Kreme, eat a dozen donuts, and run 2.5 miles back all within an hour!), so that would feel more natural :)
3. This is so hard! I’m really into compression socks now, so maybe a pair of those. I can also never get enough running hats/headbands so probably a few of those too!
4. If it is STORMING outside, I will not run outside. I’m really scared of lightning! And I would probably NOT run on the treadmill because my lightning phobia has me convinced I’ll be electrocuted on the treadmill if lightning strikes my house :)
5. Again.. so tough! Probably Meb just because I love him.
6. My freshmen year of high school, my 4×800 relay team won the state championship. It was such a fun experience!
7. Don’t judge the sport of running by how terrible it feels the first 2-3 weeks. Get past the tough first couple weeks, and you’ll start to enjoy it!
8. I’m not sure how weird this is but my husband swears I can’t run in a straight line to save my life. I’m always bumping into him when we run together!
9.Food. Always food. And usually a cup of coffee too!
10. When I first started running, I ran competitively in middle school and high school. I really, really didn’t enjoy it back then because it was always about the times and winning races. There was so much pressure! When I think back now, I remember wishing I would get injured (I realize now just how bad of a place I was in with my running). Once I finished my senior year, I took pretty much all of college off of running. Once I graduated, I decided to train for a half marathon. Something about it being MY choice and there being 0 pressure from coaches/teammates/parents made me love it again! Now, I run for ME and it’s pretty much my therapy :)

7. I’d tell her to go slow, so she doesn’t get injured.

10. What has been the biggest change in your running from when you very first started until now?
My running has gone thru it’s ups and downs but at the end of each and every run, I feel like a renewed person for having taken the first step. It is more meditative these days as opposed to running fast and I have reached a point that I am a-ok with that.

Yay!

1) Gosh, I can’t even think of what that might be. Right now, I’d say a thick smoothie made with banana, pineapple, milk, spinach and maybe a bit of almond butter.

2) Oh Lawd….can’t even choose. I’m a Donut girl ALL the way, but can’t imagine that amount of bread in my belly while running eek. But Burrito ain’t no better! Have to go with donuts and pray for the best.

3) $100 gift card?!?! I’d die. Hmm, usually I’d say running shoes, but I’m injured, a pair of running shorts and nice, LOOSE, cool tank-top would be a privilege x

4) Pouring rain, a cold rain. Pouring. And, yes, to the treadmill.

5) Kara Goucher….or, truthfully, Sidney Crosby actually but he’d never run with me.

6) A local 10-mile race I did years ago with my sister x

7) Don’t take it and yourself so seriously. Always stay humble in yourself and training. Running is a privilege, but if you’re injured or out for months – get over it and yourself. Injuries will happen and you don’t get back faster by thinking you deserve to.

8) Count the number of letters in words/sentences and adding them up, etc….I’m weird. It’s also exhausting at times doing all the math but I can’t seem to help it.

9) Ideally, I’d say a healthy delicious smoothie, a shower, and a rest with reading a book, and maybe a coffee from the local shop :)

10) I don’t think it’s all there is to my identity; I recognize the importance of recovery and taking care of yourself FIRST.

6. I’d redo the Marine Corps Marathon (and this time I wouldn’t have GI issues!)
7. Ease into the miles and don’t run if you are getting an injury–the goal is to be able to run FOREVER, so a few days off to allow healing is NBD
8. I wear a Garmin, but I never look at pace. I run almost entirely by feel. The Garmin is just used to easily determine the distance I ran.

If nutrition were all equal I’d have to go with frosted cake and ice cream. It might be my favorite food but it seems to be reserved for special occasions ;)
I recently had a Chocolate Cake Shake from Portillo’s in Chicago and it still haunts my dreams it was so good.

2. Would you rather have to eat 6 donuts or a large burrito in the middle of your next long run?
Donuts easy
2. If I handed you a $100 gift card to a running website (that has EVERYTHING running related)… WHAT WOULD YOU SPEND THE $100 on (details are appreciated)?
I need some new running shoes. I fell in love with Brooks Pure line- the Pure connect was my favorite but I’m not sure they still sell those, or if they are anything like the version I had years ago. I love all running clothes too.
4. Fill in the blank: If it is ________________ outside, I will not run outside. Would you then either choose to run on the treadmill or not at all?
Below 10 degrees or storming or super windy. If the weather is supposed to improve by tomorrow I would take the day off. If it was a week of bad weather, I’d hit the treadmill.
5. If you could go on a run with any famous person or famous athlete… WHO would it be?
This is hard because I like running by myself…maybe Jimmy Fallon.
6. If you could go back in time and choose any race that you have done in the past and have that same experience all over again, which one would it be?
Probably my first marathon (Kansas City marathon). It was fun and exciting and the weather was perfect and cool.
7. If your best friend decided to become a runner today and you could give her one piece of advice, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?!
Keep walking after your long run or race for a few minutes instead of stopping or sitting. It makes a huge difference in how you will feel for the rest of the day.
8. What is one weird/different thing you do during your runs?
My husband (who uses a running app to keep track of mileage and pace ) calls me a metronome because I run almost every mile of our long run at the exact same pace.
9. What is your usual race/hard run reward afterwards? A food/drink/other?
After a race it’s usually whatever is served at the post-run party. And then i might get a burger. After a normal weekly long run it’s usually Chipotle.
10. What has been the biggest change in your running from when you very first started until now?
I used to only run at night and somewhere along the way I became a morning runner. Now I have a really hard time running at night.

1- If you could have one meal that was in your kitchen and waiting for you to eat each day after your run, what would it be: Man, that’s a tough one! I would probably have to say, a turkey burger, sweet potato fries, and a diet coke! Ha! I rarely eat meat but after my super long runs, I crave a big hamburger and some salt!

2-Would you rather have to eat 6 donuts or a large burrito in the middle of your next long run? Burrito! If it comes with salsa…

3- If I handed you a $100 gift card to a running website (that has EVERYTHING running related)… WHAT WOULD YOU SPEND THE $100 on (details are appreciated)- discounted running shoes, so I could add more to the cart, NUUN tubes, and running socks, because you can never have too many pairs.

4-Fill in the blank: If it is ________________ outside, I will not run outside. Would you then either choose to run on the treadmill or not at all? The only thing I really dislike running in is heavy wind- but I try to force myself to run in it anyway because it’s good for the stamina!

5-If you could go on a run with any famous person or famous athlete… WHO would it be?… Kara Goucher as an athlete and ELLEN, if she ran….She’d be a hoot and probably get me through some long miles with her corny jokes.

6-If you could go back in time and choose any race that you have done in the past and have that same experience all over again, which one would it be? My PR 5k- Best experience ever. I had no clue I was going to win first in age group and then when I came in 5th overall, that made it even better!

7-If your best friend decided to become a runner today and you could give her one piece of advice, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?!
Pace yourself and enjoy the mile you’re in. It’s easy to rush out and bomb later and it’s easy to panic and think you’ll never get there. One step at a time!

8-What is one weird/different thing you do during your runs? I play the same beginning song in every run. Gets my brain geared up for what’s ahead and I am more likely to feel motivated.

9-. What is your usual race/hard run reward afterwards? A food/drink/other? Large diet coke and a hamburger after long runs. Short runs- a small doughnut…and then I crash from a sugar high. lol

10-What has been the biggest change in your running from when you very first started until now? Mentally- knowing that I will always be able to come back from anything if I work hard enough. I spent a lot of time after countless injuries worrying I would lose everything but I have found thats not true!

1. If you could have one meal that was in your kitchen and waiting for you to eat each day after your run, what would it be (for this meal we are pretending that anything/everything is fair game… it’s all healthy, nutritious and will help your recovery so say whatever you think would be the yummiest)?!?
Honestly it would be a burrito bowl with lots of guacamole and hot sauce….
2. Would you rather have to eat 6 donuts or a large burrito in the middle of your next long run?
Definitely a burrito.
3. If I handed you a $100 gift card to a running website (that has EVERYTHING running related)… WHAT WOULD YOU SPEND THE $100 on (details are appreciated)?
A burrito…haha jk wait what? I would buy a new running hat for the sun and maybe a few casual tops that I could wear for running but also for going around town.
4. Fill in the blank: If it is ________________ outside, I will not run outside. Would you then either choose to run on the treadmill or not at all?

7. If your best friend decided to become a runner today and you could give her one piece of advice, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?!
Take it slow especially if you are beginner. It is going to hurt, but the satisfaction after you finish is awesome!
9. What is your usual race/hard run reward afterwards? A food/drink/other?
Pizza – though I eat pizza weekly so it isn’t really only a hard run reward.
10. What has been the biggest change in your running from when you very first started until now?
In the beginning I did it as a stress reliever and as a way to get over some of the things going on in my life. Now I run because I love to do it.

Oh my gosh, I don’t know if I’m too late to answer, but I was traveling! And I want to participate anyways even if I can’t be entered to win – LOL!
1. Bacon cheeseburger with sweet potato fries.
2. Hands down – donuts. All the time. Every time.
3. Arm warmers, black ones, probably from Pearl Izumi (because sometimes the best gear for running isn’t running gear). Injinji toe socks.
4. Icy. I would run on the treadmill.
5. Meb
6. Carlsbad Marathon – BQ baby!
7. Be smart and start slow!
8. Hold my head back until I feel the snot stop running out of my nose.
9. Candy, as in any and all candy. Gummies, chocolate, snickers, reeses…just to name a few.
10. I only compete with myself. I do not compete with other runners anymore. There is always going to be someone faster than me out there. Just as there is always going to be someone slower than me. So, I can only try to be better than I was yesterday and that has nothing to do with anyone else around me. It’s all up to me.

1. Definitely a BLT, add avocado and cheese, and a side of fresh berries.
2. 6 donuts because I’d rather run the risk of a sugar high / crash than the potential for a burrito mishap…
3. I would FOR SURE buy new running tights and running vest – winters in Wisconsin have destroyed my cold weather gear.

4. If it is over 98 degrees outside…and yes, I would treadmill in the AC. I say that temperature because I’ve done it many, many times because of races.

5. Gabriele Grunewald – she’s a legit inspiration.

6. My first ever Ragnar.

7. Every mile counts, regardless of your pace.

8. Always lead with my right leg when going up onto a curb (I tore the ACL in my left knee, and I’ve tried to change this weird quirk, so I’m subconsciously cautious, I guess)

9. BLTs with avocado and cheese

10. My love for it – I used to LIKE it…now I LOVE it.

8. Count the number of songs I have left
9. A big Diet Coke from McDonald’s
