Are you a WORRIER (in life or your running) and you should make these now.

We got more rain yesterday (our rivers are overflowing!!) so we decided to take it inside for a swim.

Brooke jumped into the pool probably close to 50 times and this was her favorite form for her jumps:

IMG 5636

She would swim all day long if she could.

IMG 5640 2

I was in the other room getting some work done and came in to see Andrew blow drying Brooke’s hair.  He did a really good job too… Even though he doesn’t think so, he has gotten really good at doing her hair.

IMG 5642

Dinner was our favorite sweet potato nachos!

IMG 5651

And then Brooke and I got to work on baking some muffins.  It has been way too long since we last baked together.

IMG 5649

While the muffins were baking, this is how Brooke waited for them.

IMG 5656

We used this recipe and they seriously tasted SO good… next time I will add more crumble to the top because the muffin tops are my favorite part.  Brooke told me the bottom part was her favorite, we were meant to share muffins.  Oh we also used frozen blueberries so the dough turned out a bit more blue.

IMG 5654

We then looked at ‘funny dog pictures’ and that entertained us all for quite a long time.

IMG 5660

Andrew and I have been on the hunt for a show that we would love together for a long time (I mean, This Is Us doesn’t come back on for months?!?) and we found this one.   We both love it and I always have some good flashbacks to all of the seasons of 24 that I used to obsess over because of Kiefer Sutherland.  Even though each season of 24 felt like a really similar season… I was hooked on that show back in the day.

IMG 4394

I keep getting these selfies from my sister.  Another day of spraying her kitchen.  They gutted her entire kitchen and they have been doing the entire thing themselves.  She won’t let any of us come see or show us any pictures because she is too excited for us to see the final product!  Five kids and no kitchen for the last few weeks, she is superwoman.  And I am just going to call her Joanna Gaines from here on out.

IMG 5657

I finished Big Little Lies and I absolutely LOVED it.  I thought this little sentence was kind of similar to us:)  She is talking about how she is able to say more when she is out with her walking partner than she probably would at dinner or somewhere else.  I’m not sure why running with somebody else makes it so easy to overshare for me but it happens every time ha.  I build a trust with the girl I am running with so quickly and all of the sudden we are sharing our life stories with each other a few miles later.  Maybe it is the endorphins that brings it out in us or maybe this just happens when I am doing something hard with somebody else?  I don’t know why it happens but some of my favorite conversations happen while I’m out on the run.

IMG 5643

I decided to start another book by Liane Moriarty (I’ve read What Alice Forgot too and really enjoyed that)!  Excited for The Husband’s Secret!  PS I think that my favorite running book is STILL Mile Markers.

PS I usually prefer real books to the iPad but I am not patient enough to start a book until I go to the store… plus I like to read while I’m on the treadmill.

IMG 5662

I’ve told you before but worrying is something that my brain just loves to do.  I’ve always been a worrier (and especially those years as a single mom, there were some nights I swear my brain would not stop because I was so worried about everything).  It is just something that I constantly have to work on.  Sometimes I can’t stop the worries from entering my brain but I definitely have the ability to stop them there and not give in to continue to think about them.

I have different running friends over the years that worry like crazy before a race, ones that allow a little bit of race anxiety before the race but just enough to pump up their adrenaline, and many all along the spectrum.  I’ve had races that I worried like crazy leading up to races and ones that I didn’t really think much about until I was at the starting line.  My fastest marathon was one I signed up for 3 days before the race (I was in shape for it) so I didn’t really have time to worry;)  I most definitely enjoy my racing a lot more when I realize doubting myself is not going to get me anywhere.  I did the training, there is no point in worrying.

I’ve also found this with difficult workouts too.  I do so much better when I don’t think much about the workout (besides making sure I eat well and get enough sleep so that I can perform well) and just go and do it.  I’ve wasted time in the past worrying about a workout the entire night before only to get out there and do it and shake my head over worrying about it.  Running is fun.  It’s not our jobs.  And with age, for me, running is not something I base my self-esteem off of anymore.  It’s something we love to do… so next time you start worrying before a race or hard workout, repeat the below quote with me mmmkay?

CWcpOqYUsAArVuP

Random but if you have a marathon coming up or hard race, read this article before going into it.. it’s an older one but I like to read it before race day to pump me up!

I love real books. I don’t have a Kindle or iPad or anything like that, but I enjoy being able to take a paperback out with me by the pool to read in the sun (and I don’t have to be super cautious to make sure it doesn’t get wet).

I try not to be a worrier, but I fail at that a lot. I wish I didn’t stress out about the unknown and so many things that may or may not happen, so it’s definitely something I’m working on.

I am definitely a worrier. I get anxiety and it can be crippling sometimes, but I’ve put my energy into finding ways to combat it, which is really just taking better care of myself. I actually wrote about the things I do to combat my anxiety here: https://byjoannevirginia.com/blog/favorite-self-care-techniques

Same thing with running. I do get nervous before races, but I just try to channel it into something positive and use the adrenaline to help me during the race. It seems to work pretty well.

I’ve been reading SO MUCH on my iPad lately because you can download ebooks from the library immediately. I set a goal to read 50 books this year, so taking the time to either go to the store or library is not very efficient. I do prefer real books, though!

My favorite shows right now are Jane the Virgin and The Americans. If you haven’t seen either, I’d suggest you check them out. SO GOOD!

Worrier here!
Love baking apple crisp in the fall and then my home smells delish!

my son loves designated survivor! I was loving imposters until the series ended for the year which was so annoying – I miss it! we also love Younger which starts again in June – can’t wait! Oh and Odd Mom Out should be starting again soon too!

Reply

We both love designated survivor too! Lots of suspense. Crumble on muffins is so smart- ive never thought to do that at home!

Favorite thing to bake– seven layer bars! But more like 10 layers for me ;)

I am OBSESSED with Twin Peaks right now-the original 90’s version, on Netflix. The characters are so quirky and the mystery just keeps getting deeper and deeper as the show goes on-in the best way! I’m loving it!

Reply

That sounds awesome Brooke (ps your name is my favorite)… we are going to have to check it out!!!

I am still searching for a new show to get hooked on since all of my shows are wrapping up for the season, but some of my Netflix favorites have new seasons coming, so that’s good for me!

I read almost all of my books on my iPad. It’s easier because I can carry TONS of books on a tiny thing rather than big heavy books. Don’t get me wrong, I do love the feeling of a book in my hands, but technology just makes it easier.

I am not a worrier by nature. However, I have plenty of family that is, so maybe that’s why I am not! They do it all for me! I do still get terrible nerves before a race though. I also sometimes get nervous if I have a really tough workout – maybe nervous isn’t the right word, but I have to psych myself up for it.

I LOVE making cupcakes! I invested in some cool decorating things and learned how to make fancy cupcakes (cake and frosting from scratch!) and it’s so much fun! I don’t do it all the time, typically only for special occasions, so maybe that’s why I still love it, because it is time consuming for sure.

Oh my gosh I am a total worrier, and unfortunately it carries over to me being a complete jerk! Ran the Eugene Marathon last week and traveling from Boston to the West Coast stressed me out and it’s not like I was even running the marathon with a goal in mind since I have been injured since March and haven’t ran in 7 weeks. I just wanted to finish – so why worry about that? UGH IT’S RIDICULOUS!

I love love love baking and all my friends put me in charge of the treats when we have parties. I tend to make whatever someone wants me to, but probably I love making a cheesecake best because I just love cheesecake. Or pie. I love pie.

My husband and My first date was watching ’24’ – our son is Jackson which we like to tell people is for Jack Bauer.

I like real books but it is easier for me to read on the iPad so the kids think I am asleep (and thus don’t come in and bug me). There are days I wish my husband would read in the iPad because I have a hard time falling asleep with the light on.

Toll house chocolate chip cookies are the favorite in our house.

Reply

OH I LOVE your first date story and the name Jackson;) Okay, we must be twins when it comes to reading… I like the iPad for the same reason and I wish Andrew did too so that the side lamp would turn off ha:)

Reply

Designated Survivor fan here too! And Liane Moriarty. I could read one of her books in a day if I had the time!

I am a massive worrier and have my first ever marathon next Sunday and slightly freaking out. Might have been teary eyed at the end of reading The Marathon article you linked to. Just another affirmation that I can do it! Also plan on reading this a lot this week and next and race day: http://www.oiselle.com/blog/kara-goucher-do-not-open-until-race-day

Reply

YES YES YES… I LOVE that post by Kara, it’s amazing. I am SO excited for your first marathon! You have done the training, now go celebrate all of your hard work!! Please let me know how it goes. You’ve got this Sarah.

I prefer books, but I do most reading on my Kindle, because I am also impatient. I wish I could read on a treadmill, but it gives me a headache!
I am not a worrier. But I do stay awake at night remembering some stupid thing I did when I was 7 or 12 or 29 or yesterday, things I can’t actually go back and fix. Like tripping in front of everybody. That kind of thing. I don’t know why I do this, and I really wish I could stop, because logically, I know it doesn’t matter. But it replays in my mind anyway.

Reply

I am such a worrier, I wish I could shut it off. :( I have been trying to just let things happen and go with the flow, which helps, but I still feel like I’m worrying in the back of my mind. I definitely get very anxious about races, and I feel like my performance suffers because of it. I need to figure out ways to calm down!

I love reading on my ipad because I can read at night as we’re falling asleep and not bother my husband. It’s also so convenient to have multiple books with you at all times. I love baking homemade granola bars and brownies. The first because they are a healthy(ish) snack to have throughout the week and the second because they are delicious. :)

Reply

I read The Husband’s Secret (on my kindle which is my preferred method!) and thought it was great! Even better than Big Little Lies in my opinion.
Now that you finished the book, you should check out the show Big Little Lies on HBO! It’s pretty good :)

Love that quote about worrying- I definitely need to repeat that to myself.

Have a great Wednesday!

Reply

I’m totally going to watch the show now! Thanks Katrina and so good to hear that you like The Husband’s Secret even more! Enjoy your Wednesday!

I just started What Alice Forgot for my friend’s bookclub! Glad you enjoyed it!!

Those muffins look delicious!
My favorite thing to bake at home – Cookie bars!

I am unfortunately a BIG worrier. My husband has really helped me control this- he is such a calming influence. but the worry still creeps in sometimes.

I have read all of Liane Moriarty’s books and enjoyed them. They all have such a strange twist/plot that I can never guess. I think if you enjoy Moriarty’s books , you’d also really like the books “The Secrets of Midwives” and “It Ends with Us.”

Have a great day!

Reply

I actually DID read the book It Ends w/Us and I absolutely LOVED it. I need to check out The Secrets of Midwives… THANK YOU for the recommendation Blake. I’m just like you… Andrew helps me a lot too but sometimes the worries just come!

Reply

I LOVE the rocking chair quote, I need this somewhere in my house. I’m a worrier I must admit and pretty much about everything. I blame my Mother as she is the same, ha!

Reply

I got it from my mom too;) I’m glad you liked the quote! Enjoy your Wednesday Richard!

The Husband’s Secret is so so so good! I liked it better than What Alice Forgot. Big Little LIes was really good too.

2 things: That is ADORABLE that he blow dries her hair :) and your sister and you look so much alike, especially in the eyes. I didn’t realize that until you posted that picture of her today

Ahhhh thank you:) It makes me happy that we look alike! I hope you are having a wonderful day Alissa!

I read The Husband’s Secret a few years ago and really enjoyed it. Although I had figured out the ending before I finished the book I still recommend it to people.

Reply

My husband and I are also watching Designated Survivor. It’s so good! I’m definitely hooked.

And I am also a worrier. I was literally up last night and only got a few hours of sleep because of it! It’s comforting to know that others struggle with worry and anxiety, and that I’m not the only one.

Reply

I have anxiety so I am kindof an elite level worrier ;-)

I’m definitely a real book person but our library has an e-book program so I can take books out when the library is actually closed. Or without leaving the house or putting on “real” clothes. So I wind up with e-books a lot.

Reply

That picture of Andrew blow drying Brooke’s hair just melted my heart. Maybe is because I’m a total “Daddy’s girl” and seeing other parents be like that with their girls just inspires me so much love.

I used to read hardcover books. Now I started purchasing the kindle version of books because they are cheaper. So now I basically just read from my laptop. My favorite book of all times has been The Road To Serfdom from FA Hayek. That book really changed my life. It opened my eyes to the point where I could say I was another Nathaly after reading it. I was living in Venezuela so that’s basically why I felt so strongly identified with it.

I’m a such a worrier. I’ve worked hard to stop being one because sometimes I can get really sick due to the high levels of stress that being worried causes me. This year I had gut problems because I was worried all the time. Now, whenever something concerns me I just let it go.

Favorite thing to bake at home = Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Favorite thing that I always beg my Mom to bake at home = Chocolate Cake.

Reply

I prefer real books, but lately I read a lot on the kindle, just because it is far more convenient to download a library book rather than pack up all my kids and actually go to the library. And who has time to browse when you’re trying to keep your kids quiet so the librarian doesn’t banish you?
My favorite show right now is “Life in Pieces”, it’s so hilarious, I’m ready to binge watch the whole first season again (first season is on Netflix). Even my husband likes it.

Reply

THANK YOU FOR THE RECOMMENDATION!!! I can’t wait to check out Life in Pieces… hilarious is our favorite:) Thanks Karin!

I am OBSESSED with Designated Survivor! My family and I have a group chat going every Wednesday night that usually includes a bunch of different emojis! I’m definitely a worrier, but I’m working really hard to simply let things be. Life is much more liberating that way :) My favorite thing to bake would have to be my Grandma’s banana bread. It’s supposed to be made with walnuts but I prefer using chocolate chips! I also do this weird thing where I pick the top off the bread right when it comes out of the oven since it’s so crunchy and warm and delicious…my family knows that whenever I make it for them, the top will be gone before anyone even has the chance to cut a piece haha! Have a wonderful day!!!

Reply

I choose chocolate chips over walnuts too! HAHAHA the top is the best part! I want to join your group thread about Designated Survivor! I hope you are having a great day Maria!

Landon and I are currently going through every season of Dick Van Dyke. It’s an oldie for sure, but so good. I’ve also heard a lot of rave reviews of The Crown, so that is next on my ‘to-watch’ list!

As for worrying, I never thought I was a worrier until I had my son. Goodness gracious, now I feel like I am constantly worrying about one thing or the other.

My favorite thing to bake at home has to be either some type of healthy brownies or cookies, but I am more in love with no bake treats, like protein balls, homemade peanut butter cups, etc. :)

i saw this quote once and loved it… “worrying is a misuse of the imagination.” <3

I loved my husbands secret! It was an incredible book that kept my attention the entire time- and not all books do that!

Oh that makes me so happy! I can’t wait… let me know of any other books that do that for you too!

I’m trying to watch 13 Reasons Why just to get ahead of my students and I’m still really undecided about it.

I prefer reading from my Nook only because books are heavier and can be a pain to drag around with me ;) Plus, I can read my Nook in the dark.

I can be a worrier, but I have found some things that work well for me and I try and use those as often as possible.

My fav thing to bake at home is probably a good & simple chocolate chip cookie!

I love that running quote! A few weeks ago I ran the Eugene Marathon (I PR’ed ((only by a minute)) and qualified for Boston again!) and I ran next to a guy who read me a note from his friend. The gist was basically “At some point your mind is going to begin to lie to you. It will tell you your body can’t go on, long before your body can’t go on. You will be in pain, you will be limping and you might even be bleeding. But sometimes that’s what you need to go through to feel true joy.” I definitely kept repeating to myself that my mind was just lying to me around mile 19 or so, and knowing that really worked for me! I didn’t speed up the last 7 miles like I planned, but I DID run a VERY consistent race (and a very slight negative split).

Also yes. I am a worrier. About everything. I’ve gotten slightly better (I think), but I can still sometimes make myself physically sick with worry.

And YAY for finishing Big Little Lies! Did you see the twist coming?! I think I’m going to start watching the show next week! I think the cast is spectacular!

Reply

HUGE CONGRATS on your PR (hey… any PR is a huge accomplishment), consistent race and BQ! I love what that guy shared with you… that is awesome and I’m going to remember this! Ya know, I did a little bit but not really! I loved it… I’m going to watch the show too! I cannot wait:) Thanks Annie and i hope your day is amazing!

Reply

I usually read from my Kindle. We travel a ton, so it’s great having a variety of books without the added weight of books in my suitcase or carry on.

I’m not a huge worrier, I kinda get annoyed with myself when I start worrying about everything! Sometimes I can’t help it, but for the most part I’m pretty even keeled. My sister always says worry must work because 90% of the things we worry about never happen!

My favorite thing to bake is pumpkin muffins because nothing makes my house smell like Fall more than those!

Reply

Hi Janae! Have you and Andrew tried Madame Secretary. It is so so good. If you liked 24, I think you may like it.

I’m not sure that I get nervous or worry about a workout, but if I am not consistent with my running, I lose my confidence. I start to doubt that I can do it, and it keeps me from really anticipating a great workout.

We haven’t… thanks for letting us know about Madame Secretary! We will have to watch it. I do the same thing with losing my confidence… let’s work on this one together!?!

I’m watching The Good Wife now on Netflix. I never watched it before and I heard people raving about it. It also won some awards when it was on. I love it! I am usually a comedy-only person but this has humor, heart, intelligence.

LOVE LOVE LOVE The Good Wife! I’m so sad it’s over!

That blow drying pic is so cute!

I love my Kindle for travel but I hardly ever use it at home. I spend all day in front of a computer so I try to avoid screentime otherwise. It is so darn convenient though to order e-books, I think it’s only a matter of time before paper books are a relic.

My daughter once said to me, “Mom, worry is a useless emotion”. How is it that so often our children are wiser than us?

Show: Started “The Affair” but lost interest so we are looking for a good one to watch as well.
Book: Kindle is so much easier for many reasons. But you lose out on getting to share the book with a friend when you finish it. Never read a running book but I LOVED The Husband’s Secret.
I’m VERY much a worrier. Always have been. My nickname as a child was even Worry Wart Wendy!
My favorite thing to bake at home would have to be a Pizza! ha!

I love mile markers too! I love making brownies at home the best! And you need to watch Psych………eight seasons…..so good! And they are coming back for a TV movie in December!!!!! Also The Following is good…..Kevin Bacon!!

I like murder and mystery shows, (I used to watch Vincent Price movies with my mom and grandma). A lot of the shows that I like have ended, sadly. I do like Major Crimes but I have to wait for summer for it to come back on. I like comedies too, but not stupid funny. If you are ridiculous I get embarrassed for you and stop watching.

I prefer books but I was accumulating way too many of them. After we donated some crazy amount of books (boxes and boxes, the thrift store actually asked us to stop and we had to hit another one to get rid of them) I made a concentrated effort to either borrow from the library and read them on my iPad (also usually from the library).

I like to bake brownies, cookies, and muffins. I enjoy baking but I don’t always love decorating. (although I am pretty good at it).

I am a worrier. I am working on not fussing over what I can’t control or change. It’s wasted energy.

Reply

I loved The Husband Secret (and Big Little Lies!). Truly, Madly, Guilty is also good! I usually read on my Kindle but sometimes you just want to hold a real book in your hands!

THANKS FOR THE RECOMMENDATION ROBIN!!! I’m going to have to get Truly, Madly, Guilty! Thank you and I hope you are having a great day!

oh, I’m a huge worrier! Its not a fun feeling. :( My husband actually helps me a lot.
I just ordered Big Little Lies because I want to watch the show after. Right now I’m reading Lilac Girls. Its a really good story.
I heard about a new documentary coming to Netflix on May 19 called the Keepers. Might be interesting! I’ll have to check out Husband’s Secret.

Reply

I loved 24! It took over my life on winter break one year during grad school LOL. I also love Liane Moriarty’s books. I just finished Three Wishes, which was good but not as good as Big little Lies, The Husbands Secret, and The Hypnotist’s Love Story! Oh, and Truly Madly Guilty! And yes, I am a huge worrier!! I have a lot of anxiety. Luckily it doesn’t interfere with my sleep (I love sleep!) but I worry a lot!!

Reply

LOVE Designated Survivor! Other than once again you can barely hear Kiefer Sutherland talk it’s my current favorite. It’s so gripping!!! I”m behind a few episodes and am soooo curious! So good. SO GOOD! (and intense, I”m not usually and intense tv show person but this one is an exception)

My favorite book is still probably Secret Life of Bees. I read it when I was pregnant with my fourth baby. Don’t recommend reading it while pregnant. ten times the amount of tears.

My rule of thumb-double the crumb topping. ALWAYS.

Professional worrier right here.

So I have a marathon coming up in a week and a half, and I have a big time goal I am trying to hit…I have trained hard and trust that I am well prepared, and I have a good race and nutrition plan. My big worry is the one thing I cannot control: the weather. I do not run well in the heat and I’m very nervous that it will be hot and I will race badly despite all of my efforts. Do you have any suggestions for how to deal with this worry? Thanks much!

Reply

KATIE!! I am so so excited for your marathon, which one is it! You’ve got this. Oh the weather… I had this same exact situation with Boston 2 years ago. I had trained my guts out and was set to go and then boom… crazy weather was expected. I kept worrying about it until my running partner Josse told me I wasn’t allowed to talk about it or think about it again. There was nothing I could do about it so I just had to let it go. Control the things you can (i.e. nutrition, taper rest etc) and let go of the things you can’t (the weather etc). Hopefully the day is perfect for you and if not, there is ALWAYS another race (that is what I remind myself on marathon day each time… YOU’VE GOT THIS KATIE!

Reply

It’s the Mountains 2 Beach marathon in Ventura, CA (it’s a popular local BQ race in SoCal because it’s a net downhill, though there are plenty of uphill and flat parts too). Thanks for the advice, I think Josse was right, I need to at least stop myself from talking about it, even if it might be impossible to stop thinking about it – but I will try by unplugging from social media a bit. Also, new rule, I am not allowed to check the weather forecast any more except for one time next Friday (race is Sunday), because it’s just stressing me out and, like you said, there’s absolutely nothing I can do about it. And I am running New York in November! So there is already another race, haha. Thanks for the support, hopefully I will be able to report back with some good news on the 28th!

Oh that sounds so fun!! GOOD LUCK KATIE and I want to hear all about it! GO ROCK IT!!!

I have heard such good things about Designated Survivor. I am determined to not start another show right now (I already have so many!), but I might have to give in to that one when I finish one up. The Husband’s Secret is so good. Right now I am really loving the shows Shameless and Chef’s Table.

I am a huge worrier, but I am trying really hard to be better about it lately. It’s really obvious that worrying does nothing for us, but it’s near impossible to control sometimes I feel.
