Our top Hawaii FACTS and FAVORITES (I have a million pictures).

PS something weird is going on with my pictures not showing up… will you let me know if you can see them all or not in the comments?

Today is our last full day in Hawaii so we are going to soak it up with the beach and a run before going back to our Utah winter.  I received this text from Josse on Saturday—>  “I just ran in a blizzard in calf deep snow.”  I’ll go ahead and add that she did 13 miles in calf deep snow.  I think she needs an award for completing that run… I would have been on the treadmill or on my couch with a cup of hot chocolate while watching This Is Us:)

PS Brooke told me she isn’t afraid of the water after the jellyfish problem on Saturday but we might be building a lot of sand castles today instead of playing in the water.

I thought today I would share some of our FAVORITE things and pictures from our trip.  We spent a lot of time this weekend resting because they were pretty tired from all of the sun and traveling but here are some of our favorite parts of the trip.

I think I might have taken too many pictures but I just wanted to capture their sweet little faces and excitement over all of the beauty.  Like my mom said this last week, nature provides me with the best healing/cleansing/energy/hope/brightness/gratitude/the list goes on and on.

We are learning that quality time together is the best thing for successfully blending… this trip was great for that.

**The running in Hawaii was amazing.  When I went to school here it was during a time that I was all about the elliptical so this was really my first time of getting some good running in while here.  The sunrises were unreal and the days that included some light sprinkling felt great while running.  Gotta love sea level running after coming from running at high altitude because it felt like the air just kind of seeps into my lungs here, it doesn’t take a lot of work for me to breathe while running in Hawaii.  But the humidity, hills and the heat did take some work for me.  I kept my runs paced pretty easy and hopefully I didn’t lose too much from my speed work deposits over the last few weeks but if I did, time to get back to work this week on building back up again.

IMG 7155

A rainbow run with my sister-in-law.  One morning I went to my sister-in-law’s bootcamp type class and oh my goodness.  I was sore for 2.5 full days after that.  We didn’t use weights but somehow in 30 minutes of burpees, push-ups, jump squats, crab walks and other intense (for me at least) moves, every muscle on my body was sore.  Always funny to feel like you are in good shape in someway and then be proved wrong by doing a different type of exercise ha.

And another solo run on the beach (calves burning).

**One afternoon we drove over to pipeline to check out the incredible surfers.  Those waves were around 18-20 feet tall! I can’t even imagine.

IMG 2781

I would love to know what is going on in his little mind as he was watching the surfers.

Pretty incredible.  I’m glad running doesn’t take as much coordination as this does ha:

While we were there we ran into an internet friend:)  We had emailed/connected years ago.  She commented on Instagram that she was also in Hawaii and so I kept my eyes open for her… I was so excited to finally meet her.

**After Pipeline my sister-in-law took us over to a little beach that was pretty empty which was nice.  It is over by Turtle Bay with a perfect little area for the kids to swim around in.

**One morning we did the Lanikai Pillbox hike and it was stunning at the top.  The kids hiked the whole way up but they were done with the hike on the way down.

We hung out at the top for a little while.  Loved this RUN HILLS not your mouth haha:

And being covered from head to toe in sand;)

Brooke ran free from thing to thing to thing.

We attempted a family photo in the waves but it didn’t work out as well as we hoped.

**One day we went canoeing with the kids to flat island and they really loved it.  Some of the kids jumped on the paddle boards too while we were out but Brooke was all about the canoe.

**As far as food goes, everything we tried was amazing!  We ate at our family’s house for a lot of the meals and went out a few times too.  Some of our favorites included:

Maui Tacos had some incredible fish and shrimp tacos.

7 Brothers had the best burger Andrew and I have ever eaten.  No joke.  No exaggeration. The best.   Plus the chocolate and banana shake is a must if you ever go there.

Agnes Portuguese Bake Shop had the most amazing Malasadas = hot little donuts that melted in your mouth.

**Of course I had to get my favorite type of pie at Ted’s Bakery… banana cream pie is life.

**One of the mornings we were here we took the kids to the children’s museum!  Andrew and his brother went surfing and the kids needed a little time inside. My sister-in-law had some free passes to the museum so we went.  It was AMAZING.  The kids loved it and dressed up in approximately 20 different outfits while we were there.

**Had some time to read.

**And just relax together.

**I loved Brooke’s little curls that she would get each day after the beach.

**GoPro magic…   Andrew won one of these last year at his job and he got so many great pictures of the kids with it:

What book are you reading?  I just finished The Couple Next Door (kept me guessing the entire book) and reread chunks of Present Over Perfect (such a good book) and would love to have some new recommendations!

Have any running goals this week?  A longer run than usual?  A harder speed workout than usual?  More strength to help your running?

Are you more of a beach person or a mountains person?

Your trip looks and sounds amazing! I’m definitely more of a beach person, and Hawaii is one of my dream vacations. Hopefully some day!!

I loved Present Over Perfect! Have you read Looking for Lovely by Annie Downs? That’s a great one!

Most of the pics didn’t show up for me. :/

Well, the photos I saw were awesome, but a lot of them didn’t show up for me either! Darn, I really want to see that rainbow run. Looks like you’re having an amazing time.

Reply

THANK YOU LYNN for letting me know! The pictures should be working now:) Hope you are having a beautiful day!

Reply

I could only see a few of the pics as well… most just showed the file name. I’d say about 20% of pics I could see.

Reply

Thank you Dayle for letting me know! The pictures should be working now (I hope:) Have an awesome Monday!

Reply

I can only see about a third of the pictures… But I’m looking for a good read and The Couple Next Door looks like it fits the bill. Thanks! And Hawaii looks heavenly… That water!!

Reply

I’m on my iPad and can only see about half of the photos. I wonder if the files are too big? I’ve found saving them in jpeg is normally helpful.

It’s funny, I used to be a beach person but I prefer hiking now I think.

Reply

I’m seeing some of the photos the others couldn’t, but not all of them (about half overall).
Looks like you’re having a great time!!

Reply

I need a new book to read! I say it all the time and never do anything about getting a new book lol…a lot of the pictures did not show up for me.

Reply

I can’t see all your photos :( But from the ones that I can, it looks like you guys are having the best time!

I’m reading girl on a train – it’s a thriller and it’s just started to get really good. I try to read a chapter a night but sometimes I end up getting carried away and reading half the book. Behind closed doors is one of my favourite all time books.

This week I’ve got a 14 mile run – the longest i’ve EVER ran and I’m super nervous about it but I’m going to give it my all and hope for the best. My shins have started to hurt so I’m just really hoping I don’t have shin splints :(

Reply

Only about 4 pics at the beginning , one in the middle of Brooke at the beach, and 6 ish at the end….most of the middle ones were gone/empty/missing in action……

Reply

Wish more of the pics showed up :( Looks like a great time!!

Reply

I could only see the first two pictures and the last three :( Eitger way the few I saw made me want to pack up and move! I’m currently trying to decide where to go to grad school at and Hawaii just rose to the top of my list! I just don’t know if I could afford the rent with a ten and twelve year old and a two month old. Anyway I’m glad you all are having fun :)

Reply

I can only see a few of the pictures.
I need to new book read. I’ve been meaning to search Kindle Unlimited but haven’t had time lately with school starting.
I’m doing 10 miles on Sunday. I know that’s nothing for a lot of people but I haven’t ran that far in about 8 months!

Reply

Ahhh now I am dying to go to Hawaii! I could only see a few of the pics but they were enough to convince me :)

I hope to increase the number of bridge/hill sprints I can do this week! Time to ramp it up!

It looks like y’all are having an AMAZING time! I know you are making lifelong memories! So, I am currently reading Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of NIKE by Phil Knight. Here is a little excerpt, “For that matter, few ideas are as crazy as my favorite thing, running. It’s hard. It’s painful. It’s risky. The rewards are few and far from guaranteed. When you run around an oval track, or down an empty road, you have no real destination. At least, none that can fully justify the effort. The act itself becomes the destination. It’s not just that there’s no finish line; it’s that you define the finish line. Whatever pleasures or gains you derive from the act of running, you must find them from within. It’s all in how you frame it, how you sell it to yourself.” I love that! So far the book is really interesting! I had 800s this morning and I have a long-ish run mid-week because I am doing a 5K this weekend :)

I cannot see the pictures in this post (which is a huge shame!!) and also I could not see any pictures from Megan’s guest post. ;(

Reply

I first noticed the picture issue with Megan’s guest post. Your mom and sisters guest posts were normal but then none of Megan’s pictures showed up for me. On this post I can see a few pictures but most of them are just a box with a little picture icon and a bunch of number/letter codes.

I hope to see the pictures soon! I love reading your blog and seeing all your pictures :-) So glad to hear you are having such a great time in Hawaii!

Reply

Same…I couldn’ t see any of Megan’s pics :(

Reply

I just started ROAR: How to Match Your Food and Fitness to Your Unique Female Physiology by Stacy Sims and so far I find it fascinating! She had me at : “Women are not small men” haha After having A LOT of sinus issues since the fall, my goal for this week is to go through my normal routine of 4-5 days of running and 2 days of weight training without my sinuses acting up again! That would be awesome.

Reply

Could only see a few pics but the ones I saw were lovely! I just finished The Nightengale and loved it!

Reply

I am using Google Chrome and cannot view about 1/2 of the pictures! But still enjoyed the post!

Reply

I can only see the first two and last two pictures.

Reply

I couldn’t see Megan’s pictures on my computer but saw them all on my iPhone. I am on my iPhone now and, like most of the other readers, saw the first few pictures and a few at the end, the ones in the middle didn’t really show up.

Reply

The pictures aren’t showing up for me as well :(

Reply

Great to read about your Hawaii trip! I couldn’t view about 2/3 of the pictures…hope it’s an easy fix for you!

Reply

Only a few of the pictures showed up for me. :(

Reply

I am so jealous of your trip! I was in HI at this time last year and am missing it so much!! I could see some of the pictures but not all :(

I have a question about your GoPro. Do you have it set on video and pull stills from it? Or do you do continuous photo taking to get the awesome shots you have? I’ve tried to do the video where it takes a picture at the same time but found the quality is always less than if it was just a picture.

Reply

Couldn’t see most of the pictures but what I did see has me longing for a beach vacation. Looks like you guys had an amazing time.

Reply

Missing lots of pics :(

Reply

Some of your pictures are not showing up:( but that trip looked amazing!!

I’m not reading anything right now but soon I’ll start to read “The Surrender Experiment”. My running goal this week is to substitute my long run for a speed run in the Track. I grew up going to the beach nearly every weekend so is easy to call myself a beach person:)

Reply

Thanks for sharing your wonderful, sunny pictures. I’m glad you guys are having such a wonderful time.
**About half of the pictures didn’t show up for me.

Reply

Sounds like a great trip. Is Andrew on break from school? My winter break got extended a week, I didn’t complain.

I can only see about half the pictures.

Reply

Only a few of them pictures showed up for me too :(

Reply

I can only see some of the photos. Which is probably good because I might take an unscheduled break from grad school and go to Hawaii.
Running goals: Returning to running after two weeks off after I sprained(?) something in my foot… Trying to get my speed back because I can’t elliptical fast enough, apparently.
I grew up in Vermont so I will always love mountains…. But the ocean is where my heart is.

Reply

I’m totally a beach person — but I married a “snowy mountain” person!

It’s a balancing act to get my fill of sand between my toes and his fill of snow on his nose!

Reply

I’d say I can see half of the pictures- 12.

Looks like a blast though. Brooke in that chambray shirt- too much!

Reply

What a wonderful trip! About 3/4 of the photos did not show. So sorry you are having that problem! I hate when stuff goes wrong on my blog like that. It is so hard to fix sometimes and such a stupid little tweak that usually fixes it.

Reply

I could only see a handful of the pictures…but the ones I did see were great! Hawaii looks amazing! Thank you for sharing!

Reply

I can only see a few pictures but you looked like you’ve had a blast! I can’t imagine what it’s like to go from high altitude to humid and hills. My goal this week is to slowly build up to running again. I’ve been quite sore since my marathon last week and have a nagging ankle soreness that’s finally going away!

Currently Reading – “The Book of Joy” by Dalai Lama and Archbishop.

Running goals this week- to nail a good speed workout! Going to try for 5 x 1 mile @ 6:30 – send help ha. Also trying to not get injured because I didn’t take my usual day off yesterday ( legs were just feeling too good and I had the time… will i pay for it.. who knows;)

Have a great day.

Reply

I just finished The Couple Next Door too! Totally kept me guessing.

I could only see a few pictures in this post, but it still made me want to go to Hawaii.

I’m a mountain person, I will always live by the mountains, but the beach is fun to visit!

I’m currently reading Salem Falls by Jodi Piccoult and I recently downloaded Small Great Things by Piccoult, Two by Two by Nicholas Sparks, and Truly Madly Deeply by Liane Moriarty.

I am really trying to focus on strength since I’m not currently training for a race. Today I did a 1 mile warmup, then legs, then 1 mile, then I finished off with 4 min of 30 sec @ 9mph and 8 incline, then 10 sec rest. Whew, my legs were jello!

I could lay on a beach every single day for the rest of my life!

I am mountains over beach any day of the week! The beach is cool, but the mountains have my heart.
My next book recommendation is “Sacred Marriage” by Gary Thomas. My husband and I are getting ready to celebrate 15 years in June and this book is rocking my world. I only wish I could have read this earlier. I just want to recommend this book to every young married couple in the whole entire world.

Reply

Same as everyone else on the pics. Just a few showed up.

Also, 7 Brothers for the win! That was our last meal on the island when we went a couple years ago. There was a line at the door waiting for them to open. Not only were the owners (who take your order and cook your food for you) the nicest, I can still remember that burger with the grilled pineapple on top. Yum!

So glad you had a great family trip. We’ve only been once but the slower pace of the island really helped us to focus on each other and build great family memories.

Currently reading Heartless by Marissa Meyer. Really great, light read. Love her stuff.

Unfortunately, most of the pictures on this post did not show up to me.
The ones that did show up have made me so jealous! I can’t wait to take my twins on a family trip when they get a little older! It looks like you guys had a wonderful time. The joy on those kiddos’ faces is undeniable. Not that you care what I think, but I think you and Andrew are doing a fantastic job of blending your family. I can’t imagine how difficult it is, but you both are handling it with such grace. How lucky those 2 are!
Enjoy the last moments of Hawaii!
I’m out to run in rain this morning

goals for this week are to work on increasing weekly mileage. I’ve got a lot on the agenda, but excited to start knocking some of it out of the park. ah, marathon training.
and I can’t see all of the pics, but the ones I can see are envy inducing!

Now I want to go to Hawaii!! I also couldn’t see many of the pictures. Shoot!

I can see all of the pictures on an iPad and an (old) iPhone. Surprised cause I usually have tech problems. Looks like a great time-I’m jealous!

I could only see the first few photos.
Living in Massachusetts, I’m spoiled by having quick access to bitb the beach and the mountains, so it’s hard for me to choose. I love both, but there’s something about the crashing of the waves that is so soothing.

Reply

Can only see less than 50% of your pictures :( Same with Megan’s post the other day, couldn’t see any of them.

What an amazing trip! It’s snowy, windy here today in Utah. :/ I saw about 1/3 of the pictures, reading the post on my phone.

I could see some of the photos and the ones I saw were gorgeous! Looks like such a fun trip!!
A great read that my husband I appreciated for our first year of marriage was The Meaning of Marriage by Timothy and Kathy Keller. Super good!

Goals for running this week? Run a few more times that last week, now that my hip flexor feels better and work on building distance back up!

Pictures showed up for me! Thanks for all the great posts! Im actually in the process of planning a surprise trip for my husband’s 40th this summer. Sorry if I missed it along the way, but I just want to make certain….Are you on Oahu? Please confirm island….Do you also mind sharing with me how you came along such “cost effective” tickets? All suggestions and tips are greatly appreciated should you have the time. You have intrigued me and probably hundreds of others with your great vacation write ups—Hawaii should pay for your next trip out there! :)

Reply

HEY CINDY!!! YAY for your 40th bday celebration for your husband. We are on Oahu and staying in Kailua! Andrew said he checked every website a million times until he came across the deal (by using Hopper and google flights apps) through United (each ticket was a little less than $450 when usually you pay around $630 to pay here). I hope that helps and hahaha Hawaii needs to pay for the next trip, I agree:)

Reply

I can see all the pictures now! So beautiful

Looks like such a great trip!!

Love the mountains and the beach equally :) Always good to vary trips and mix up activities :)

Running/workout goals this week – Would love to get in 2 swim days and 5 running days. I ran 56 miles last week which was higher than my norm so thinking I’ll cut back a bit this week and let my legs chill out! Got in a 2 mile swim this morning (about 60-ish laps) and already feeling better!

My most recent reads have been nursing books/ notes! I graduated in July and started working a few months back on an intense unit where I need to still be studying! I Hope school is going well for Andrew – willing to bet Hawaii was a much needed break for him! I think I’d like to read present over perfect next :) from the summary it seems like my kind of book.

I was wondering if you might do a post about where you are staying in Hawaii- obviously for privacy /and safety I could understand if you’d prefer not to or wait a while until you talk about specifics but it seems where you’re staying is really family friendly yet still stunning & fun for the adults! It can be so hard to find places that encompass all that & also at the right price.

Anyway, so glad to see you all enjoying a needed and well deserved vacation!!<3

Reply

HEY SARAH!!! Yay for graduating nursing school and getting an awesome job! Let me know what you think of the book, I have really loved it! So we stayed in Kailua for the entire trip! We are staying with Andrew’s brother in their house! The y don’t have hotels here but there are a ton of Airbnb! I have to say Kailua is my favorite part of Oahu! The beaches are unreal and plenty of great places to eat and hike. You are so right, finding the right balance between family friendly but great for adults is hard!

I am currently re-reading the Chronicles of Narnia books! Kind of odd for an adult, but I remember loving them as a kid and the pastor at church last week actually read a quote from one of them which was the catalyst to open them back up.

Your vacation looked so fun; so glad you all got to spend that time together. :) <3

Beautiful photos!!

I would say I’m a beach person – but I’m not sure because I haven’t been to any big mountains in my life. But I like warm weather – so maybe regardless it will be the beach!

Apparently we are supposed to get a ton of snow tomorrow – so it is looking like treadmill running for the next few days.

Hawaii is one of my favorites! When the girls get older and can handle the long flight I want to go back!

I just read What Alice Forgot and it is so good! She hits her head in spin class and forgets the last 10 years of her life. The story is revealed slowly.

Hey Janae,

Your trip looks amazing. It’s crazy beautiful there. I would have a hard time choosing between ocean and mountains – luckily we live in a world where it’s easy to travel and I get time at both ;)

Do you have any recommendations for heart rate monitors – either chest or wrist. I know you’ve said you don’t like wearing the chest bands but I thought maybe your running friends have some tried and true favorites. I told my boyfriend I would buy him one but I am overwhelmed by all the options out there. Thanks!

Reply

I am so glad I can finally see the pictures. Although it just makes me wish I was there. I will just go make myself some tropical smoothie and pretend I am there. But then I will have to take a hot shower because if I drink anything cold in this Utah weather I get so cold that my hands and feet turn white and I literally can not warm up until I take a hot shower.

I am so glad you are having so much fun. This trip seems so relaxing (well, as relaxing as traveling with kid can be) and rejuvenating. We must do lunch when you get home so I can hear all about it!

My hands and feet are like that too! Raynaud’s disease. Sometimes it even happens when it’s 50 degrees – it’s so weird!

Looks like you had a wonderful vacation! I would love to visit Hawaii.

I’m from Vancouver, so I have both beach and mountains to choose from but when I moved to Toronto for three years, I thought I would miss the ocean the most, but nope, I missed the mountains like crazy. I’m still not entirely sure why but I guess they are where I feel the most alive and at home <3

I can see all the pics….almost wish I couldn’t tho…cuz I’m totally jealous!!!! Looks insanely amazing…
I love both the mountains and the beach!!!! I guess that’s what keeps me here in NJ. We are so close to both.

Ps. The family photo in the waves…absolutely love it. love.

I’m a beach-in-the-mountains type! Either give me a Lake or give me a beach with a view. That probably comes from growing up on the southwestern coast of Canada (Vancouver area).

My running goal this week is more of a walking goal. I had a baby 3.5months ago so I am just starting to get back to it! I’m starting out by walking, but my hubs and I just signed up for a fun run in May! It’s just an itty bitty 5k but it’ll be the motivation I need to get back out there. :)

When we were there on our honeymoon, I think we ate at Maui Tacos 4 different times. So yummy!!! I am definitely a beach person. It’s my jam!

I just finished reading “All the Missing Girls” by Megan Miranda. It was fantastic! It’s told mostly in reverse, day by day, which was a bit confusing. I think I am now going to read it backwards!

So jealous that you’re in Hawaii. I’ve been wanting to go for a long time. It looks so beautiful. I’m both mountains and beach girl
