Not my favorite Saturday but everything is okay!

Our Saturday started off great and Brooke and I spent a lot of time together while Andrew was at the hospital for school all day.

And then at around dinner time once Andrew was home we got a phone call that my dad had taken a big fall on the ice and hit his head very hard.   My mom got him to the hospital and they gave him a CT scan (he is okay… I don’t like waiting until the end of the story to let people know he is okay).

Andrew and I rushed to the hospital as fast as we could and my sister and her family were there too.  My dad could not remember a thing from the last three months.  Not one thing.  He was on a one minute repeat cycle…. about every one minute he would ask us again what happened to him and why his head hurt.  He’d ask who brought him to the hospital, he would tell us that he felt really disconnected from everything and had no idea what was going on.  The sweet part was that there was a calendar on the board in front of him and every minute or so he would see that it was January 7th (my sister’s bday) and make a HUGE deal about how it was her birthday and tell her the sweetest and most sincere happy birthday.  He also would want us to sing to her but we stopped after a few times of that ha;)  The calendar also made him realize that he couldn’t remember a thing from Christmas and so he would ask the doctor if he could leave to rewrap our presents.

The doctor came in after a bit to tell us that the CT scan showed no swelling or bleeding (biggest relief for us) but that it would just take time for his memory to come back.  My poor mom was so beyond sad and worried this whole time but that news was so good to hear.  We got to take him home and we stayed at my parents’ house until late.  I’ll be over there today and hopefully his memory comes back asap!

I’ll be back tomorrow but as for now, we are pretty exhausted.  I hope you have a beautiful Sunday.

I am so thankful for my family.

I’m so sorry to hear about your Dad. I know that can be so scary. The same thing happened to my husband years ago when he fell while snow boarding. He had forgotten the last year or so of his life and couldn’t form new memories. We had to keep him in a dark and quiet place for a few days and eventually everything came back together and he was fine. Sending positive thoughts to you and your family.

What an awful experience, but I’m so glad to hear your dad is going to be ok.
About a year and a half ago my dad’s car was hit by another vehicle. Thankfully he didn’t have any serious injuries but he did have to be on crutches for a while and drove my mum crazy because he couldn’t run or play golf! It was a horrible experience getting the news and not knowing what was going on. I couldn’t really relax until I had been able to see him after he got home from the hospital. Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery for your dad x

Hey Janae! So very sorry to hear about your dad. Just wanted to let you know that something similar happened to my mom back in November. She fell and hit her head very hard in the middle of the night on her nightstand. :( She lives alone in St. George and somehow knew she was in trouble and drove herself in the middle of the night to the emergency room. They have no idea how she made it there by herself because she couldn’t remember a thing and was super out of it. Anyway, everything you’re describing about your dad is how she was acting. Fortunately, a CT scan also showed no swelling or bleeding. It took her a good week or so to come completely out of kind of a fog and be able to put her thoughts fully into words and know what was going on completely. She is totally fine now. Anyway, reading your post, it just sounded exactly like your dad and I wanted to let you know that it could be a few days or longer, but hopefully he’ll recover quickly and be just fine very soon! Prayers and hugs to your famlily. – Tali Koerner (Allison Wilcox’s SIL :))

Omg how scary!! I’ll keep him in my prayers. Also, I am a musician… off the top of my head I don’t have any concrete research to back this up, but I swear I heard sometime that playing familiar music from someone’s past or even from the “forgotten” time period can help trigger memories. Maybe worth a try??

Sending prayers for you, your family, the nurses and doctors. I know you’re going to bring him some egg whites and sweet potatoes!

It’s very important for family to communicate with hospital staff, especially pre-op.

My family had some things happen this Friday-Saturday and it continues and it’s looking good. My Dad is a cardiac patient, once you get it you have it for life. Also, he recently added Parkinson’s Disease (early stage) – like 4 mos. ago. So, he went to the hospital Friday about 12:30 AM because he had some chest pain. Fast forward to post-procedure (not surgery, procedure) where he experienced arrhythmia, compressions were required – like someone was straddling him, he came back and his ribs are broken…. So, I had the opportunity to review the timeline of events with the nurse about 3 PM on Friday. Found out the cardiologist to perform the procedure NEVER consulted/ spoke with/ touched base with the neurologist – and this was Friday, a work day for everyone. Arrhythmia is electrical and there is a correlation between the brain and the heart!!! For crying out loud!!! The brain and the heart are not silos – this is a holistic situation.

I do not know if my Dad’s cardiologist performed the procedure, but he stopped in on Saturday and said he will consult with the neurologist on Monday.

Reply

Oh Lee, I am so so sorry about what your family is going through at this time. I can’t even imagine. Please keep me updated on how your dad is doing and how you are doing! xoxo

Reply

Thank you, so much!!! It’s getting better and better. He’s out of ICU several days earlier than projected. (My dad does a lot for his health on a daily basis.) He sounds really good today. The complications from arrhythmia seem to be minimized, thank you God. (Now he’s cardiac+Parkinson’s+arrhythmia for life.) Also, my dad’s cardiologist is communicating with the neurologist; and they are reviewing the Parkinson’s prescription while dad’s in the hospital. An ER cardiologist performed the procedure and I pray he consults others in the future and factors in Parkinson’s. I really appreciate the ICU nurse!!!

My mom and dad’s reactions to these events (of course, my dad doesn’t know everything; and I’m not sure my mom gets it) remind me how everyone is doing the best they can. It’s what they will do. So, enjoy the journey/ trust the process.

Sending so many prayers and all my love! I will tell you that I’ve had three concussions- all of them sucked and I was pretty fuzzy for a while but now I’m getting much much better! I still have headaches, and healing does take quite a while, but I promise that the scary blurry shock part at the beginning is temporary.
If you have any questions about what to expect- I’m basically an expert on head injuries at this point!

So happy to hear your dad is ok. I got a similar call back in June I received a call from the hospital informing me that my son was in a motorcycle accident. Of course he was not wearing a helmet or any other protective gear. He had two skull fractures, swelling and bleeding on the brain, a broken ankle, and lots of road rash! Thankfully his higher power was looking out for him and we still have him with us. As you said I am so thankful for my family. I hope your dad is getting better and his memory comes back. My son has no memory of the accident or of the three days he spent in the ICU after the accident. The doctors say he will probably never get that back. Small price to pay. I will keep you and your family in my prayers.
