THREE important running questions/topics and our weekend!

Brooke wanted a squishy face picture when I went to take our Sunday selfie.  I don’t think we could have gotten any closer.

Not a bad way to get carried out to the car after church.

She kills me.

Brooke showed off her elf dancing moves.

Later on my mom stopped by our house with my sister-in-law.  Ever since I posted about those huge cookies that we had delivered from Chip my mom has been craving them so we attempted to make some for her.  We used this recipe:)

IMG 3345

My sister-in-law from Arizona was in town and I LOVED catching up with her.  She was my roommate many years ago and I have told this story 403 times on this blog but I set her up with my brother and then they got married.  I’m glad I got to choose one of my best friends to be in my family;)

IMG 3351

Nope, I’m not jealous at all of Beretta;)

I have just a few more pictures to share before I have you answer some questions about running.

A Knox sandwich:

And this time, an Andrew sandwich.

IMG 3144

I think Beretta gets the most snuggles of us all.

IMG 3142

We are supposed to get some more snow today so let’s remember the pleasant 37 degrees we had on Saturday.  Still not sure if I would sport shorts and a t-shirt out on a run like Andrew did in this weather but he was loving it.

IMG 3164

Brooke and Beretta also had some races after Beretta went running with Andrew.  She likes to end all of her runs with sprints/strides and she is as fast as a cheetah so maybe I need to follow Beretta’s training plan.

1.  Do you think that you could do this marathon?!?   I don’t think I could do it… that is SO so cold.  Does anybody know anyone that has done this?  Has anyone done this?  Would you rather do this marathon or a marathon in the crazy heat??

Screen Shot 2016 12 04 at 8 28 29 PM

2.   I haven’t been doing a lot of speed work lately but about once or twice I try to get in some intervals or a short tempo or a progressive run.  And after each of those lately, I stop running and start coughing like crazy!  Andrew was there one time when I finished and he had no idea that this happened to me but it is part of running when the temperatures change drastically and I am pushing myself hard (for my current fitness level).  My breathing doesn’t feel any different than normal during a hard workout or any other time but it happens right when I finish and lasts for about a minute.  I’ve finished a few races before where the coughing lasts longer but that is because I was really pushing it.  My body usually adjusts after a little bit of time but let’s just hope that the Utah inversion isn’t bad this year.  Who else has this problem?  Anyone?

3.  Because it is winter running time (I need to move to Florida;)… which part of you during the run do you hate to get cold THE MOST.  I swear my core never feels cold while running and if my fingers get cold/numb/feel like knives are poking them during the run then I am ready to call Andrew for a ride.  Hence, why I am so obsessed with hand warmers.

And for a non-running question, what was the best part of your weekend?

Again, you can come to Florida and run with me ;)

I think my lab Boomer is jealous of the snow that Beretta gets to play in!

I hate when my hands get cold during a run too! That hardly ever happens here in south florida, but there are a couple of mornings/nights when it might dip into the low 60s or upper 50s and if there is no sun out my hands are FREEZING. I’m too afraid to wear gloves on those days though because I feel like then I will start overheating haha! This week we may hit 85 degrees. I’ll send you some warmth if you send me some snow :).

I’m like you: If my fingers or hands get cold during a run, I am MISERABLE. I once made a pit stop at an ER that just happened to be on my route one morning just so I could warm my hands up. The nurse there was super nice and let me put them in front of her personal space heater.

Best part of my weekend: officially turning in the keys to my old apartment and being out of that place forever!

There’s no way I could run a marathon in sub zero weather! I’d freeze!

The cold weather makes my nose run constantly! It’s the worst part for me. I have to carry paper towels or tissues and end up fumbling with them since gloves = zero dexterity.

Reply

I could not do that marathon. I think that since I work with penguins, I would just hang out with the penguins and cheer on the runners! I too have exercised induced asthma, which I don’t take medicine for, and it is only noticeable when it gets cold or when it is super humid in the summer. I feel like it takes me about a mile to really feel “in the groove” of the run, but then I am fine, and I cough after but it doesn’t last long. Still totally worth it for the running endorphins! And I cannot stand cold fingers, toes, or ears!

Reply

#1. I feel like the perfect weather would be just fine. But I would rather run in the snow than the blazing heat.
#2. I don’t cough. I do sometimes throw up though. But not often.
#3. I hate for my ears/toes/fingers/nose to be cold. The worst is to be sweaty and have cold ears/toes/fingers/nose.
#4 The best part of my weekend was having my niece Sara come over. She is the absolute best and I can’t deny that she is my favorite.

I had to do a double take to find Knox in the Knox sandwich picture! It’s such a good sandwich! Haha. 1) No way I would be doing that race. I freeze if the weather is in the 40s. 2) I haven’t really paid much attention to it, but now that you mention it, I do cough sometimes after hard workouts or races in the winter. 3) Hands and ears. I wear gloves on any run under 50 degrees and I wear ear warmers or a toboggan if it is under 40 degrees. I don’t mind my legs being cold at all though. I will run in shorts until it is under 30 degrees. 4) The best non-running part of our weekend was breakfast w/ friends (although it was to celebrate a huge marathon PR for one of our running buddies … not much goes on over here that isn’t tied to running somehow). I got a breakfast bowl w/ roasted sweet potatoes, eggs, avocado, black beans and kale. Ahh-mazing!

My fingers turn white simply from walking to the mailbox and back….Raynaud’s Syndrome sucks. I have tried the hand warmers and they don’t work for me either. I have to wear thick wool mittens…no gloves…at all times when out but the second I remove them to get out a key/something from my bag/or check my phone I have instant white fingers.

Ya wonder why I dislike winter/cold/ and pretty much feel blah until April????

However, Beretta’s “In Love” eyes while being held by Andrew kind of melts my heart. Now that’s a dog’s life. ;-)

I had a great weekend. The boyfriend and I ran a local charity 5k called the Big Chill. We also did some holiday shopping. And took the dogs for two great long walks on the trails. Just lots of quality togetherness.

I don’t mind running in the cold. But when my face gets cold I get a little uncomfortable. So I wear a buff and try to cover most of it.

Reply

That asthma thing is interesting. I haven’t noticed a whole lot of coughing when I’m outside, but I cough on the treadmill. I wonder why. Is the gym not properly ventilated, maybe? It’s definitely not the temperature, because it’s always too hot in there for me.

Reply

If I’ve had a good, hard workout – I often cough off and on the rest of the morning. I used to have trouble with asthma when I was younger and this seems to be the last vestige.

The best part of my weekend was the fact that my baby has decided that sneezing is hilarious and giggles like crazy any time you pretend to sneeze. Baby giggles make my heart happy.

Reply

Ohh those big cookies look so good!

Reply

I usually feel pretty good DURING cold weather runs – but afterward, once i’m back in the house and should be warming up, my body gets SUPER cold – my fingers and body have trouble getting warm again for hours on end. I have Reynaud’s, so its not entirely unexpected with the fingers, just annoying!

Reply

Honestly I get so cold I don’t think I could do that marathon either. I would rather run a marathon on a treadmill or in 90 degrees…

I love that Brooke knows Sunday selfies. I was LOLing at that!

Reply

My toes feel numb when it’s cold – that makes it uncomfortable to run. I ran in Yosemite Nat’l Park a couple of weeks ago – wearing two pairs of socks in 20 degree weather helped on my run. Those cookies make me want to break out the cookie ingredients and bake!

Reply

Your can definitely move to Florida. I’m sure you’ll have plenty of readers who will want to run with you, including me:)

Last time I ran during cold weather conditions I realized my hands were freezing so bad (and I extremely HATE IT). So yeah, I totally go for hand warmers if it’s slightly cold outside.

Reply

That’s a look of devotion Beretta is giving Andrew. So cute. 4 legs would probably make us all better runners…

I don’t cough but in the winter I get nose bleeds from the dry air. In the summer I experience a sensation of clogged ears, like I’ve been under water. I checked with my doc and it’s allergies. Who knew these would be side effects from running?

I could not do that marathon, I would be miserable.

I hate when my feet are cold, my whole body feels cold. (I don’t like when they’re hot either though).

Reply

My face always gets so cold! Everything else is fine but from my mouth to my eyes is always freezing. I hate wearing anything over my face so I don’t know what to do about it! Best part of my weekend was planning a trip to MEXICO! It’s getting cold here so I’m excited to think about a warm vacation next year :)

Reply

I live in the UK and when I go running about 6pm it’s around 24 degrees – I now go running with two pairs of socks and gloves!

I cough when it’s really cold – I went to the doctors because I would struggle to breathe sometimes and they said I had exercise induced asthma and gave me an inhaler – I have a puff on it before I go out and sometimes I’ll use it during but it’s made my breathing and coughing so much better! have you tried running with a scarf over your mouth and nose? That might help if it is to do with the cold :)

I didn’t run at the weekend but I’m going for a run this evening! I’ve just started my marathon training so I’m looking forward to seeing my runs progress!

I love your blog – it makes my day! Thank you!

Reply

Oh that is CHILLY Lauren! Good call on two pairs of gloves and socks! That is also a great idea to use a scarf over my mouth/nose… I bet that will help big time! Thank you and I hope you have a great run tonight. YAY for marathon training, please keep me updated with how it is going! Thanks Lauren for your sweet comment, it means a lot to me!

Hi Janae. Just a tip based on something you recently mentioned about running tights being too short on you. I am 5’9″ and I buy size “tall” running tights. Athleta sells talls in all sizes ranging from XXS-XL. JC Penney also makes tall athletic clothes at a more affordable price point. Both companies sell their running tights online. I own tights from both places and they cover my ankles.

Reply

AHHH THANK YOU DANIELLE!! I will have to get some of these tall running tights. I owe you big time! Thank you!

I ran a half marathon this weekend in Boston! It was freezing and I couldn’t feel my toes until mile 6. Face got wind chapped as well. I MUCH prefer running in the heat! I’m going to try the hand warmer idea!

Reply

WAY TO GO on your half this weekend in Boston… oh that sounds WAY to cold. I hope the hand warmers help you out!

Reply

That picture of Beretta and your husband is too funny. Beretta obviously adores him. I get the crazy coughs after running in the cold too. Totally fine during the run but the moment I stop running, I can’t stop coughing. The best oft of my weekend was my kiddo’s birthday party. So fun watching hang with his buddies.

Reply

Oh that sounds like a blast this weened at the party! Yep, she LOVES Andrew. That is exactly how it is for me… the second I stop running, I can’t stop coughing!!!

Reply

Oh mannnn I could NOT do that marathon! I’m the absolute worst in the cold. I absolutely hate getting my feet cold because then it just takes me so long to warm up! But also over the weekend I managed to get a freezing cold bum just from not wearing the right thickness of running tights. It was so weird and it made me really sad!

Reply

Okay, that sounds miserable…. dang it! I am so sorry and I hope that never happens again!

Reply

I love the way Beretta is looking at Andrew; I swear this is how my cat is with my husband. She forgets that she is my cat and I had to BEG him to keep her. Haha.

I don’t like when my face/nose/chest get super cold because my lungs hurt and my nose won’t stop running.

The best thing this weekend was our Sunday family dinner. It is definitely one of my favs every weekend!

Reply

I could never do that cold marathon!! ever!!! I hate being cold!! I’ll stick to my treading running for the remainder of the winter! :)

Reply

I would run that marathon just because of where it is. What an experience! And I’d rather run in the freezing cold than when it’s super hot.
I always cough after I run outside in the cold; sometimes it’s goes on for a couple hours afterwards. I assumed it was because the air is dry and cold.
During cold weather running season, I hate trying to figure out what to wear. I feel like I always end up over or under dressed.

Reply

My hands almost always freeze during winter runs and I spend part of the run dreading them warming up. It is like a knife!

Best part of my weekend was buying a shiny new TT bike!

Reply

California and Hawaii are great winter options, too. 70 degrees on Oahu at 6:15 this morning ;) I have no winter running experience. Anything below 50 is winter to me!

Reply

We will be in Hawaii in January… I literally cannot wait. That sounds incredible Kathy!!!

Reply

If you’re coming to Oahu I can give you some great running routes – from an easy Ala Moana Park jaunt to the punishing 10 miles on Tantalus. I’ve done hundreds of miles here!

Reply

YES WE ARE!!! Andrew’s brother lives there! I would love the routes… thank you Kathy!!! Maybe run together too?!

Reply

Nope Nope Nope…I will never do the Antarctica marathon, I hate being cold!

As soon as I read about your symptoms I thought Exercise induced asthma. I think the triggers are the cold, dry air and possibly a light neck warmer covering your nose and mouth might help. <3

Reply

I have EIA and while the best thing for it is to stay in shape, sometimes if the weather is just right (wrong?) it gets me. It’s definitely worse when it’s cold outside. Last spring we had really dry conditions in the South and we had to do an intense sled run at Crossfit. I didn’t stop coughing for 2 days. You can buy Primathene tablets at the pharmacy (they may require a prescription now?) that help. You just swallow a couple before exercising in your trigger conditions.

Reply

Come to FL! There is a 5k and a half marathon at the Speedway in Daytona and they are a lot of fun.

Reply

That happens to me too! When I really push myself in the cold, I start coughing like crazy.

I really don’t mind running in the cold too much, but when I don’t have my ears covered of my hands warm, my run feels 268x worse.

Artic marathon? No thanks.

Lastly, best part of the weekend was finding our tree and chopping it down, then waking up to a blizzard Sunday morning. Lazy, dreamy weekends are the BEST.

This Canadian is trying to race in all 50 states…and I secretly want to also race in all 7 continents. I have North America and Europe checked off and will do an unofficial half marathon while in Africa later this month…I would LOVE to do Antarctica…I definitely have a few longs runs in -20F weather per winter so I know I could handle it…I might not love it, but I can do it! lol

I CANNOT FUNCTION with cold hands. Hence my bulk purchase at Costco of hand warmers every year! :)

Favorite part of the weekend…my boyfriend, who lives out of town, was in town all weekend with me so basically the whole weekend was my favorite! :)

Reply

Okay, Jane! You are AMAZING!!! I am loving your goal… I think you should do all 7 continents too:) Africa later this month… that is amazing! Keep me updated with how you are doing, I’ll live through you hahah! Oh I am so happy that your boyfriend was in town all weekend, I bet you had a blast!

Reply

You dog is so adorable! I like the cold but I’m not sure I would do that marathon lol. My legs do okay with the chilly weather but my feet are ICE BLOCKS. They don’t really bother me but when I get home and take layers off, I do notice they are cold. I got caught in a rain storm this weekend and the weather was in the 40s. That was one of the times, my core was actually cold. I raced home as fast as my legs could take me!

Reply

I actually prefer running in the cold to running in the heat…. you can always add more layers to warm up, but there’s only so much you can take off to cool down ? Believe it or not, -20 Celsius really isn’t that bad, depending on the wind. I would do it, especially if I got to see penguins!! The coldest run I ever did was 7k (about 4.5 miles) in -40 Celsius, which is -40 Farenheit (apparently when it’s that cold, it evens out, lol)…that was too cold, I wouldn’t do that again!! After that winter, I set my limit at -30 Celsius (-22 Farenheit), if it’s any colder than that I’ll hit the treadmill!

Reply

I was wondering why there was 3lbs of butter on your counter. Those cookies must be amazing.

I would never run that marathon. I can even stay warm in my house. You would think if I was cold I would get up and start moving and instead I just curl up into a ball and barely move all day.

Reply

My fingers get so cold that I have to wear mittens on top of my gloves. I’ve only used hand warmers once while running and they were fabulous! I was diagnosed with cold induces asthma a few years ago. I can hear myself wheezing when I first start running on really cold mornings, but once I’m warmed up it’s not as noticeable.

Reply

I cough after running sometimes too! Didn’t know it happened to others. And this not running in the cold stuff- it’s what you get used to. Anywhere in the north USA and north of the border, runners deal with sub zero temps all the time. I ran a 10 km once with temps and windchill in the -30 C zone in Canada but also ran a turkey trot in North Dakota with similar temps at the end of Nov. It’s really not that bad. Icicles on your eyelashes, completely covered from head to toe and lots of fresh air.

Reply

girl, Florida running is the WORST! what I wouldn’t give to run in the cold again! the heat cuts at least a full minute off of my speed – and the sun is BRUTAL and makes you wanna cry every time you have to run after the sun comes up or goes down. STAY IN THE COLD :) haha

Reply

I’ve been running outside in the cold and then ran in treadmill the other day and thought I was going to die at a slower pace as my heart rate felt so high. You go back and forth from outside running and treadmill – how does it make you feel? I didn’t know if I was having a rough day or it was I’m not used to heat of indoor running?
