Glad I brought this and that is cruel.

A picture from the beginning of my run.  Does anyone else have the problem of their iPhone shutting off when it is too cold outside?  Maybe it is just my phone but during any of my cold runs I know I will have my music and camera for the first half of my run but then it just turns off when it gets too cold.  It did this today but I did get a few pictures before it did that.

I’m glad that I brought one warm running outfit yesterday when I was packing because for some reason I just assumed that St. George wouldn’t be that cold (probably because I usually die of heat on every run while I am here).  When my alarm clock went off this morning and I checked the weather,  it said that it was 20 degrees this morning.  I was very grateful for my tights and gloves!

I tried to take a really cool running photo but such a photo wasn’t going to happen this morning.  After a mile or two I warmed up and the only thing that was cold during this run were my toes which wasn’t too bad.  Sometimes I look at temperatures in different areas of the US during the year and when I see what some of you are running in right now—>  WOW.

Gotta love some different scenery.

I found the course of the next half marathon I want to do and ran the last 4ish miles of the course.  AKA the hardest part of the race, hills and hills and hills.  Every time I do this race I wonder why in the world they have to be cruel and put steep hills in during the last few miles but for some reason I enjoy it.  7.4 miles with music the first half and thoughts about things I want to work on in life for the second half.

Brooke woke up right before I walked in the door so I gladly accepted the request to snuggle up together.  It took about 13 minutes to feel my ears again ha.

And then we were off to California.  Brooke needs to be there by a certain time so we left in a hurry.

Many of our road trips include portions with Andrew and I telling the other something and the other person not agreeing with the statement and then googling it.  Turns out that Mt. Everest really does grow each year

One stop in Primm.

IMG 4864

Waiting in line for food because we were hangry.

IMG 4866

And Andrew not very excited about our food options ha.  Not the biggest fans of the options but we should have planned food better.

At least we had the best variety of Kisses—>  the candy cane ones are the best by far (followed by Hugs).

IMG 4857

Sure is going to be weird without our little sidekicks for a week.

It’s in the 80’s here in Tampa, Florida. So, I don’t have a problem when my phone gets cold, just when it gets too hot.

YES my iPhone shuts off too when it gets too cold like after an hour or so of running usually. I hit the home button to change the song or something and it’s like BYE and shuts down. Drives me nuts!

Also yes- the peppermint kisses are by FAR the best :)

Also fun fact for Andrew (sorry to torture you while driving and not in front of a tv buuuuut….) Harry Potter GOF is on ABC family (Freeform)…. my night is made :)

BAHAHA You made Andrew SO jealous:) Hope you enjoyed every second and yes, the phone thing is SO annoying! Glad I’m not alone ha!

Reply

My iphone does the same thing – really annoying when I’m skiing and want to take cool photos on the top of the hill ;-)

It was -27C in the morning today – so I definitely did not go outside to run!

Reply

Okay, I would DEFINITELY be inside all day sitting in front of the heater!!!! Oh, I didn’t even think about skiing… that would be so annoying to miss out on those pictures!

St George is my happy running place. Probably because St George is where I started running and the red rocks are just so pretty to look at.

Next time, keep driving past Primm for another half hour or so and eat at Mad Greek in Baker. Mmmmmmm.

My phone randomly shut off a few weeks ago and it was cold! I think you just solved the mystery for me!

You are not alone Ali!

With an iPhone, you’re pretty much guaranteed a shutdown when it gets too cold. I run in WI winters with my Galaxy S7 down to -30F(ish) windchills and don’t have any problems, but I’ve heard that you can use hand-warmers taped to the back of your phone case to help keep the iPhone from shutting down too soon.. Also, keeping the phone in an inner pocket helps as your body heat will keep the poor phone a bit warmer to.

If you have an iPhone, check to see if you’re part of their battery recall! Mine was doing the same thing, and Apple replaced my battery for free!

Reply

Yes. I had my battery replaced. It was one of the models that had the recall. My phone would shut off when using the camera even when it wasn’t cold. But to prevent the turn off in cold I wrap it in a microfiber washcloth and then in a plastic sandwich bag and then slide it in a pocket near my body. I also keep it in airplane mode. And I only take a picture at the end of my run lol.

Andrew just told me the other day to have that checked out… I need to do that ASAP! Okay, Sally that is what my phone does too sometimes when I use the camera?!?

My bf and I were traveling to Austin when I ran the half marathon and passed Towhead Creek. He said he never understood why people call blonde kids “towheads.” I know all sorts of random information, but working in museums/historic sites most of my life I specifically know a lot about how certain sayings were coined. I loved that it made him realize how smart I really am – haha!

Okay, that is awesome Steph! I love it… thanks for sharing and YOU ARE SMART:)

My phone shuts off too! SO ANNOYING! I was trying to order an Uber to my hotel this weekend (from the zoo!) and it just. shut. off. UGH!

And no outdoor runs for me this past week – too cold! It was 0 degrees here today with a wind chill of -21F! Gross. Glad you packed enough warm clothes :)

Reply

Okay, that is WAY too cold… good call on staying inside! Oh no, that is awful it shut down when you REALLY needed it to get back to your hotel!

My iPhone always used to shut off on my cold runs. Now if I’m going out for a long run, I stick a handwarmer in my fuel belt with my phone and it never shuts off. I guess my phone is a wimp in the cold, just like me. ;)

Reply

Brilliant. I will be copying you. I’m a wimp in the cold too haha!

My iPhone has been constantly shutting down and saying it needs to be charged. Some days its in the 60%, others 20-30%, but regardless it is quite irritating. I’ve been debating getting it checked out. I’ve been meaning to get out the door to start back running but the motivation goes out the window when it is 0*, so possibly tomorrow when it starts heading back up to the 30s and 40s I might head out the door :)

Alexander Hamilton is buried in downtown Manhattan at Trinity Church. He is honored every year with wreath on the anniversary of his death, July 12. (I used to work for the church)

My phone (not an iPhone) also shuts off in the cold. It was 24 degrees this morning but we’re supposed to warm up a little bit tomorrow.

We’ll be home at Christmas.

Okay, NO WAY!! That is crazy! Thank you for sharing Lisa… I’ll be sharing that one now too!

My phone was doing that too and I thought it was just when it’s cold or because I had too many apps running, but it’s actually a problem across the board with iphones, if you enter your serial number on this link https://www.apple.com/support/iphone6s-unexpectedshutdown/, you can see if you’re eligible for a free new battery! I was eligible and got it replaced last week. I went running in the freezing cold this morning and used my running app, listened to music AND took a picture with no problems! I hope this helps!

Mint chocolate truffle kisses are where it’s at.

My phone definitely shuts off when its cold!!

I’m home in South Dakota for Christmas….it was -25 degrees F here on Saturday….and that’s without windchill! Those were definitely treadmill days :)

Reply

The temp this morning in herriman was 9! It was soooo cold. My fingertips were freezing – I need to get hndwarmers like you have mentioned! Even my eyes were cold!

Reply

I want to SEND YOU handwarmers… 9 degrees?!? That is so cold Laura! Way to go and stay warm!

Reply

That happened with my phone last week when I tried to run in like 10 degrees (dumb choice for many reasons) and my wise brother told me it’s because the battery needs to keep a certain temperature to run, so when it’s super cold the battery has to work extra hard and it just drains and dies. He explained it better than that, but you get the gist:)

That makes a lot of sense… THANK YOU Kacie! It does make sense! Okay, 10 degrees… OUCH!! Stay warm and thank you for your comment!

We are going away for a bit during the holidays to visit family! :D

It’s 25 degrees here :( Far too cold and rainy!

Super cute running tights!

We had a heat wave this morning, and I ran in 17 degrees. Sunday and Mondays runs were neg. 4, and neg. 8, without the windchill, respectively. :) I always laugh when people say what they think is cold. Runners don’t hibernate – this is especially true for Wisconsin runners! I hope you guys have a blast on your mini-vaca. Just keep reminding yourselves that you’re not unfortunate to have the holidays without your kids, you’re blessed to have extra time to focus on just each other – that makes your relationship stronger and your kids will respect that when they look at the two of you. :)

Hi Janae! 16 degrees this morning here in Boston for my run, but going to warm up to 34 degrees! I love how we get acclimated to different weather temperatures, such that now 34 degrees will feel down-right balmy!
I am still amazed that you run in ankle length socks in the winter. I started wearing long ski socks to run last winter, and I love it. Keeps me toasty warm. But I will never know how to keep my fingers from freezing off…will have to try your awesome hand-warmer trick!
Fun-fact about why our extremities get cold faster: your body spends all its energy keeping you core and organs warm and functioning at the expense of “superfluous” fingers and toes!
Have a great trip!

Have you tried the cherry cordial kisses?! Oh my. Such amazingness!

My fav thing to do while driving with the hubs is go through a list of questions (Pinterest has a bunch!) Even after 16 years of marriage and hundreds of road trips, I still love that I get to learn new stuff about him.

Today was 30 degrees during my run, which is ridiculous for So Cal. There is nothing better than a hot shower and warm fire after a cold morning run!

Did you know that the neck joint of a field ant can withstand pressures up to 5,000 times greater than its own body weight. Can you imagine if we could lift/carry an object that is 5,000 times greater than our own body weight? Sheesh!! Gives me a lot more respect for ants. :)

Ha ha we totally Google stuff the other person claims as “fact”, too! :D
My bf has complained about his I-phone not working in the cold, too.

So…funny story. Early in my marriage my husband was driving and asked me to turn on the car light to look at the map or something (this was 1999 so we still used paper maps!). I looked at him shocked and said “um, no, I’m not going to turn on the light. Its illegal.” We proceeded to have a heated discussion about the legality of turning on the interior light. Finally I said “that’s what my parents told me growing up. Let’s call them and they’ll tell you.” (Again, its 1999. We did have a cell phone but no smart phones yet so we had to call a lifeline.) We called my parents and they sort of laughed and explained that no, its not illegal to turn on your interior car light while driving. They just didn’t want us kids reading and messing around in the car in the dark so they told us we couldn’t turn on the light because it was illegal. I was devastated! We still laugh about that 17 years later.

I’ll be honest, I love a good debate that ends in a google! My ex and I always used to do this over celebrities ages or random political facts. It was an educational experience :-)

My iPhone 6S also shuts down when exposed to cold (like freezing or below) for a few minutes or more. I looked it up and apparently this is common. I think it is just ridiculous considering how much these phone cost and all the complicated things they can do; Apple should be able to make a phone that withstands cold (30 degrees is not extreme!). Now when I take it out in cold weather I do try to carry it close to my body and also do not expose it to the weather by taking it out and using it unless absolutely necessary (but it can play audio while protected). Also, I went to the website and found out my phone is eligible for a battery replacement. I’m going to do that (after the holidays when it’s safe to go near the mall), but I doubt that will solve the cold weather problem.

Would you mind sharing what kind of lip gloss you wear (specifically in the pic with Brooke)? We have similar coloring, and it always looks so good on you! Thanks!
