10 Long Distance Race Consequences and marriage license time.

Things are getting more and more real up in here.

Marriage license done and done.

Brooke was pretty stoked to be involved with the whole process.  Sorry Andrew for cutting off your head for the picture.

Glad to be back with my peeps.

Rewind to earlier on in the day—> Brooke and I went to Costco to buy all of the snacks possible for our upcoming cabin trip.

IMG 0586

And then when we got home this fun event happened.  Luckily, I was able to save most of the watermelon (good thing because it is a tasty one).

IMG 0593

I knew brooke was going to need a nap yesterday afternoon because we got home late the night before so I snuck in a treadmill run while she slept next to me.  It reminded me of all of the many times she slept by me while I ran when she was a baby.  I think she finds the sound of the treadmill comforting because she heard it a whole lot while I was pregnant with her.

For dinner we jumped in the car to drive up north to eat with Andrew’s parents.

IMG 0045

This plate times 2 plus Marie Calendars cream cheese pie.  The perfect meal.

And to finish things off Brooke pretended she was a dog for a good chunk of the night.

I came across this picture below randomly and I started thinking about some of the long distance race consequences I have experienced over the years and would love to hear some of yours too.

1.  Blue/purple lips after running 26.2 miles in rain and wind at Boston 1.3 years ago.  I think it took me a few days to warm-up again after that race.

IMG 0576

2.  I pretend that I just want to enjoy the grass and sunshine post-race but in reality my legs feel like jello and standing isn’t much of an option.

NewImage

3.  My ponytail ends up looking a bit like this after some races.  Ouch.

IMG 0579

4.  I eat one of my all-time favorite post-race meal (below pic after Boston last year).  Donuts, pizza, salty salads, candy… you name it.  I crave salt after a race big-time.

IMG 0889

5.  Every emotion I have ever had in my life comes to the surface and explodes out towards the end especially—> joy, pain, sorrow, anger, glowing, floating, scared, surprised, happy, mad, angry…

I have been known to be a tad bit dramatic during races;)  And within 20 minutes I can go from this:

NewImage

to this (I’M ON CLOUD NINE… that was the best time ever, let’s do it agin in a few months WAHOO).  It’s quite remarkable how quickly we forget it all and sign up for the next round.

NewImage

6.  Chaffing.  It happens to me somewhere during a marathon no matter how much glide I use.

7.  Gatorade all over my body.  I even walk for a few seconds through most aid stations during a race yet I still somehow manage to spill all over myself.

8.  LOADS of gratitude.  For a healthy body that can run, for the race volunteers, for my family coming out to cheer me on, NATURE… all of the cheesiness.

9.  I never ever want to come near a gu or any other type of race day fuel again (but then I do again for the next race).

10.  Motivation to train harder, smarter and get faster and stronger so I can do the whole thing all over again.

—————————————-

We are off to a cabin for 3 days with my entire family (aka a whole lot of people and this never happens).  I c.a.n.n.o.t. wait.

Been taking selfies since 1994:

My favorite post-race treat is taking a long shower! I have no appetite after a hard workout or race, so I just like to sit in the shower as long as possible and it feels AMAZING. I feel like I step out a new person :) Then after a bit I like to have Chinese food and a beer. Alllll the sodium ;)

Congratulations on the marriage license! It’s getting real now!

Reply

I’m totally with you, Gretchen. Long shower, chinese food and a (few) beer(s) for me, too! Or pizza… All of the sodium!

I waited tables at Marie Callender’s while I was in college and their cream cheese pie is to DIE for! Love that graham cracker crust!

Ultimate post race treat depends on the weather! If it’s a hot race, I crave ice cold chocolate milk. If it’s a cold race .. Hot chocolate with whipped cream :)

The chafing is real. And a shower after a race when you have chafing is the most painful thing ever. I have chills just thinking about that! Definitely been there with the blue lips too. The first time I ran Boston it was FREEZING. By the time I got back to our hotel after the race I just wanted to crawl into bed under a million blankets until I warmed up again. Which is exactly what I did. Sweaty and gross clothes and all! I crave salt after a race. Anything salty and I’m a happy camper.

Have fun with your family!!

I was so scared that I wouldn’t have time to workout after I had my baby (of all the things to be scared of, right?), but I’ve found a good balance. I workout most days at lunch, do long runs on the weekend when my husband is home (or hire a sitter), ride my spin bike after she’s asleep and take my now toddler on lots of easy stroller runs on rest days! Usually, my gym time is for speed work or cross training, so an hour is sufficient. It’s tough to find time, but it’s SO worth it! Especially now that I’m pregnant again and trying to stay in good shape for the Mountains to Beach marathon in the spring!!!!!!!!

I crave pizza after every single race, every one. ….no wait, I just crave pizza all the time.

Reply

I have stomach issues as a post-race consequence much of the time (I think because I get so much anxiety beforehand), but I’m also like you in going to Cloud 9 shortly after feeling the pain.

Best post-race meal: froyo. Lots of froyo and Wheat Thins.

Reply

Favorite post race food: a big Cafe Rio burrito!! Hits the spot every time!

Have fun at the cabin!! I love a long shower, a massage, and lots of food. I love watermelon after a long run, it is so refreshing.

Reply

I get crazy breakouts all over my stomach and legs after ultras. Todd doesn’t have many issues (lucky!!!).

We both love pizza after our 50 mile races. After 100+ miles, it really just depends. Sometimes I crave fruit and vegetables b/c I eat so many carbs through the race. I also crave BRUSHING MY TEETH!!! This is a major craving after an ultra b/c I have eaten so much stuff that my teeth feel disgusting!

Have SO much fun at the cabin. It sounds like a blast!

Ugh needing a nap is exactly how I feel right now too. I’m exhausted.

Race consequences? Haha, I’ve had them all from fractures to the best race of my life.

Have fun with the family!!

I always crave diet coke! Something about the carbonation or something I guess is always super appealing.

Congrats on getting your marriage license! That is oh so very exciting!

When my older daughter was a babe, she spent hours in the jogging stroller. In fact, it was the only time she sat still. She learned she was stuck, no matter how much she complained. I ran many miles listening to the Leap Frog portable alphabet radio. Ugh! Two weeks ago she got her driver’s permit. Time flies!

When my kids were little my husband was also on a cycling team so we were both trainings lot. We had a schedule where some days I would get priority and he would get priority workouts. The other days we either had to take (pull/push) the kids during our workout, do it early morning or late night, treadmill/bike trainer, or not do one. We were crazy, but we decided if we regularly had to get sitters to make our lives work our priorities were wrong. It worked for us and he ended up one of the top 50 amateur cyclists in the state at the time and I was running my fastest ever marathons.

Reply

We do a family cabin trip every year and it is the thing we look forward to most! So, so many memories!
Having 2 kids was the easiest to keep my running routine..id just throw them in a double jogging stroller and we’d be off. Now I’m on kid #4 and it’s much harder. I go early in the morning before everyone gets up.

Reply

I usually have to wait u till my kids are in bed to go on my runs. Or go before they wake up and my husband goes to work.

I think I feel all those same things during my hard runs and races. Running helps us process all that stuff I think.

Reply

After a race I like a big steak with mashed potatoes followed by a heaping bowl of froyo with ALL THE TOPPINGS!

Reply

My running time turned quickly into 5am when everyone was asleep. It meant a lot more treadmill but I was able to get it done!

Reply

Congrats to you and Andrew!!!! I know you must be over the moon!

Your new four legged child is so cute! I bet he will make the best running buddy! :)

My ultimate post race treat is whatever I obsessed over during the last 5 miles, haha! Usually pizza! I can’t wait to indulge in some deep dish in Chicago this fall!

Reply

My favourite/ultimate post-race meal: We have a restaurant here called Stellas. I got for a Mexican Breakfast. Two corn tortillas, black beans, eggs sunny side up, LOADS of guac, taziki, hash browns, salsa. Sooooo good and salty! :D Mmmmmm, I could go for one of those right now, actually.

Reply

I crave a burger and fries after a race—salty and savory! Congrats on getting your marriage license!

Reply

Oh my gosh I always feel like I’m going to drop the watermelon!!! There is nothing to hold onto in it!!! I use the treadmill or a stroller packed with toys and snacks. Haha Even then I’m lucky to get in 30 min if baby is awake stroller or treadmill!!!

Reply

I get the blue lips too! People always comment on it, but I never remember to ask my doctor about it. My lips are really red/pink like yours…so maybe that’s why.
That tangled ponytail looks painful. My friends with really long hair put a couple of extra bands down the length of their ponytail and it keeps it from getting tangled.
It takes me a while to get an appetite after a race. I love eating fruit to hydrate. When I calm down a little bit, I’m ready for something with meat and cheese…nachos, cheeseburger, pizza, etc.
Marriage License!!! SOOO EXCITING!!

My kids still ARE super young! (2.5 and 6 mo). I relied heavily on the gym childcare during the winter. Now that it’s light in the evenings I run at 7 pm after they are in bed, and my husband or a babysitter covers the Saturday morning long run.
Immediately post-race I like chocolate milk. Once I’m hungry again… A bacon/egg/cheese sandwich is perfection. :-)

Reply

I crave pizza. Or a cheeseburger. Or nachos. I’m sensing a melty cheese trend here…

HAHAH all of the best foods in one comment:)

My first and ONLY half marathon was miserable. I didn’t train consistently. But decided I would go in and take it easy. Of course I got a little too hyped up and pushed myself too much. The worst part was the weather changed throughout the race. Like as in it dropped 30 degrees within 3 hours. An ice storm was basically moving. When we were lining up for the race, it was 70 degrees! Basically as the cold rain started half way through the race, I began to freeze. I was running around soaked with only a trash bag. My friend said it looked like the running of the hobos because of the number of people wearing only trash bags.
My body stung so bad that when I started peeling off my clothes when I got home my husband said I was as red as a lobster. It took me a good week to start recovering from that race. I’d like to try another half marathon. But not going to lie – I’m a little scared. :-/

I love the idea of brooke sleeping peacefully to the sound of the treadmill. that ambient noise is probably so nice and rhythmic for sleep. it’s genius.

after a race, I really want either pancakes or nachos. or both. I am a girl of varied tastes apparently haha.

Reply

I didn’t run when my son was little other than chasing him if that counts as running! I did a ton of stroller walking and picked up my workout habit when I had more time when he started preschool

Reply

Brooke getting credit for photos – love it – she did pretty good too.
I love how the dog is included in so much of your life.
You took the hard part out of opening a watermelon ;) #perspective

Reply

I always ran on my treadmill with my baby next to me in her swing! Now she is almost one year old and she still loves to sit by me in her swing while I run :) (mostly because she gets to watch a show!)

Reply

YES YES YES! The best:) This makes me so happy and brings back awesome memories doing that with Brooke. Enjoy the rest of your day with your little one Allie!

Reply

That is one sorry watermelon! Have fun with the family! I love how close you guys are!

Reply

My daughter used to always lay in her bouncy seat or papasan swing (when she was itty bitty) while I was on the treadmill.
To this day if she is with me while I am on the treadmill she will still fall asleep, she’s 6!

Reply

This makes me really happy:) The treadmill is comforting to her too:) I love it! Have a beautiful day Lisa!

After crossing the finish line of marathon #1 and #2 I gor all choked up and teary eyed. I thought for sure I would be crying like a baby at the Boston fonish line, but NO. SO weird!! I think it is b/c I didn’t see my hubby right there when I crossed. He must bring it out. Lol. Oh, and the pontytail hair! Uggh! I got so sick of getting the tangles out after a race (esp a fast one) that now I just braid it. It helps tremendously! After races 13.1 or shorter, I always, ALWAYS, want Mexican food! And ALL the salt. After running 26.2 though, it takes me a very long time before I can eat anything substantial. Like HOURS. I usually have to force feed myself protein shakes. Booooo.
Btw – CONGRATULATIONS! I can’t remember if I commented already! You two make a very cute couple ?

Reply

My hair almost always ends up like your photo after every long run! It makes me envious of the girls who finish their runs and their pony tails are still smooth and shiny… :/
Best post race meal for my hubby and I is always In n’ Out!!! It tastes soooo good, especially after 26.2 :)
Congrats on the marriage license! And, have a wonderful time with your whole family at the cabin!

Reply

AHHH my hair ends up like that every single time… made worse of course if im wearing a tank top because then it gets stuck to my shoulders (ew)! After a marathon I usually am not that hungry for at least an hour after that I crave pancakes with some maple syrup and bananas, which is perfect because all my marathons have been on Sundays perfect for brunch!
Congrats on the marriage license you guys are perfect!

Reply

I cannot eat right after a race but an hour later I’m starving!!

Have fun at the cabin!!

Reply

My favorite meal is actually the pre-race meal because after a long run I typically am not hungry or craving anything for some reason. My favorite pre-race meal is chicken alfredo with green beans and garlic bread. Other runners may not appreciate the garlic but maybe that helps clear the way for me? haha

Marriage license already? Isn’t that too early for an August wedding? Or am I remembering your date wrong? I know in my state they are only valid for 30 days.

I get my long runs in after my kids are asleep or way before they wake up (on treadmill since my husband travels for work for a living). And then on weekend mornings with my running club :)

Favorite post race food is Perkins French Toast

Have a great time in the cabin, sounds like a ton of fun with a ll the family there!

Reply

Yes! I was wondering the same thing about your marriage license. I think my husband and I got ours like a week before we got married because they expire. But we’re up in Cache Valley (Utah) and that was like 14 years ago so maybe it’s changed!

I never want to eat after a race – I always get the runners flu for like 12 hours and it totally sucks! But once it’s gone, I want chips and salsa for days!

Reply

Post race I always, always want salt! The post race food at the 2014 Honolulu Marathon was bananas and malasadas. Those balls of fried dough are amazing, but I felt kinda nauseated after eating one. Give me a bag of pretzels or goldfish crackers for the first 30 minutes, them I’m looking for real food.

Reply

I always get blue lips after hard races, or even hard runs. It doesn’t even need to be cold out for that to happen to me. So weird!
I’m also glad to see it’s not just me with the crazy emotions during a race. I’m a drama queen big time!! My husband just ran his first 100 mile race. If that were me, I’m sure I would be dehydrated from all of the tears shed during that event!!
Have a great time at the cabin. It sounds wonderful!

Your dog’s eyes are AWESOME!!!

I’m always amused (and shocked) when, after our city hosts a major race weekend (with 40,000+ runners), and I’ll mention to a neighbour/acquaintance that I raced on the weekend and their response is, “There was a race this weekend?”

GET OUT FROM UNDER YOUR ROCK!! lol

Reply

When my daughter was young, I did the same thing you did and worked out while she napped or just played in her bed or playpen. Then I got a gym pass and she loved going to childcare. I just had my second and won’t have my gym pass for another couple of weeks so I am learning how to workout with two. Let me just tell you it is hard ha. I normally run early on the treadmill when my daughter is still sleeping and right after I have nursed my 2 month old so he is full and content. :)

Reply

I do most of my runs on the treadmill at 5 a.m.before everyone wakesup. On the weekends, I usually can’t sleep after the sun comes up so I hit the road for long runs about 5:30. Sometimes I’m back before everyone wakes up.

Congratulations on the marriage license! You’re one step closer.

Reply

My hair would do that, too! Except I went to get my hair cut a couple weeks ago, and he cut it wayyy too short. Now, I’m rocking the pigtails with bobby pins flying!

Congratulations on the marriage license. I got a little nervous when I filled that baby out.

Reply

Favorite post race meal is a breakfast burrito. Oh yeah! But one consequence of long distance racing for me is I get this lump in my chest sometimes and it feels like terrible heartburn so I sadly can’t eat anything big right after. That was something new that started in my last few halfs. Not sure if things will change once I start running again (after having 2 kiddos in the last 2.5 years).

Reply

I probably win the award for tone deaf Dad. My second daughter was born in ’14. My son was born in Jun ’15. Because I turned 45 last year I decided it was the time to run a marathon. Started training in AprMay timeframe which means, yep, I was running the day after Jack was born. No kidding, leaving the hospital and running in a rainstorm and returning to the hospital. (The other kids were at home with a friend).

My wife is pretty awesome for putting up with that.

Reply

I know you’re getting married in August, but once you get your license, it’s only good for 30 days right?

Reply

I used a watermelon last night as my weight for my arm workout and the same thing happened…. #fail

Jogging stroller mom here! I loved my jogging stroller. Sometimes I even miss it (because now I have to carry my own water and supplies)!
