Tuesday Tangents!!!

*You have to admit, doing this after a run (whether it is an easy, hard or medium one) feels pretty incredible.   This is what I dream about during the last few miles of a race too:)

Happy Tuesday! I hope your day has been a good one so far!  My brain is all over the place today so I feel like a tangent post is necessary.

*Josse and I went on a run this morning together and after I went on and on about the recovery from a 1/2 marathon being doable I was quickly humbled this morning:)   I think I told Josse 45 times over the course of our 7 miles that I needed to slow down.  Being the good person that she is, she totally slowed down for me big time.  My body feels good but my breathing was crazy so I really took it down a notch.

*50 degrees, a slight breeze and some Vitamin D…. STAY LIKE THIS FOREVER.

IMG 7178

*I don’t do any strength training the week (ehhhh two weeks this time around) leading up to a race and so it was time to get back for 20 minutes of arms and core.  I was talking to my sister on the phone while doing doing this and I told her that I can’t believe she does this (weight training) for fun and she told me she can’t believe I would choose to pay money to go run 26.2 miles for fun.

We have quite different opinions on what fun is it turns out.

IMG 7185

*Brooke gave me a hug and this face when she realized I finally picked up some more bread so she could have a honey and almond butter sandwich.

IMG 7144

*Yep, Rudolph is still a main part of our daily life.  I’m just glad she forgot about the Rudolph soundtrack CD in the car because I don’t think I can listen to that one more time until December rolls around.

IMG 7146

*Somebody made play-doh at school today and thought she was a pretty big shot.

IMG 7186

*Had a lunch date—> we ate drive-thru salads in the car—>  we really need to stop being so fancy.

IMG 7196

*He just got these wireless headphones (Skull Candy) at Utah Run (my goto running store… they by far have the best stuff and that is where my race outfit was from last week) and he said they are REALLY good ones in case you are in the market for wireless headphones!

IMG 7198

*I have a Costco tub of strawberries in my fridge and they might not make it past tonight.  Berries are almost as good as candy.

IMG 7197

*I came across this workout that I used to do on the treadmill and thought I would share it.  Adjust paces to your needs and this will be a killer workout.  It made the time FLY by.  I am going to do this workout next week and repeat the workout portion (easy pace, stead state pace, tempo run pace, interval pace) twice before taking the cool-down.   Legs, get ready for this:

*According to my Garmin stats/heart rate during the race on Saturday and Training Peaks (how I’ve been recording my workouts for years now)… my Threshold Pace Value (‘the maximal running pace an individual can sustain for an effort of approximately 45-60 min in duration”) has gotten faster over the months which is exciting.  I’ll stick to about a 6:30 for all of my tempo runs for the next little while until it drops down again!

*Brooke’s friend shared her Frosty with Brooke today at the park—>  in kid world that is one of the biggest acts of kindness there is.

I love strawberries – there is a local farm that grows them and hopefully I will get my first basket soon!

I record my runs using Garmin Connect, Daily Mile and I write in a journal

I love all berries, but strawberries are my favorite! They were my snack this afternoon!

I use Garmin to record my runs. I also still use pen and paper because I’m old school like that. I have notebooks from the last probably ten years of marathon training. It’s kinda fun to look back at them!

We can’t keep costco berries in our house for longer than a couple of days. They are huge and amazing!

I love running but I often say the best part of the run is the walk at the end ( I like to walk about a half mile to a mile at the end of all my runs ).

Well, I am just going to have to start copying you on this one Amanda! That sounds awesome!!

My guy and I eat drive thru salads in the car all the time!! I’ll take a lunch date any way I can get it! Wendy’s spicy caesar with grilled chicken is our jam. :)

Well you just named our next lunch date location… that sounds delicious:) Hope you are having an awesome day Kalyn!!!

Berries are better than candy! I bought a big container of blueberries Sunday afternoon and polished it off today. Berries never last long!
I use Google spreadsheets to track all my workouts. I have all my athletes use it as well and they all love it!

my runs have just not been feeling so good recently. i miss that post-run happy feeling.

That totally happens to me at times and if I take a few days off and let my body fully recover it usually does the trick and they start feeling good again. Good luck Nicole… I hope your post-run happy feelings come back ASAP!

me too. thanks, janae!

Is it just me or does Brooke’s playdoh look like a doughnut? (Or have I been reading your blog too long…..ha!)

ahaha now that you mention it… it does. I guess now we need to go get one and so do you:) Hope you are having an amazing day Kathy!

Tangent: My recovery run did not feel like a recovery run ( but more like a grind fest). Just goes to show that 5:59 pace for a half does not equal 7:13 pace for a recovery run feeling easy all the time.
Our bodies are so rude, they think they are so funny ;)
Favorite berry = Rasberry
Favorite speed workout= 4, 4, 4, 4, (floating 200 between) 400 float – 1600 – 400 float – 4, 4, 4, 4, (floating 200 between)
Pace dependent on goal race/ current fitness/old p.r standards, but can range from 5k to half marathon pace

KILLER PACE Kaytlin on your half… CRUISING!!!! You are amazing!!! Hahahah yeah, they really are quite rude. Ummm that workout sounds killer! I can’t wait to try it! That sounds awesome! The 4s mean 4 minutes right?

Reply

Well that was for a “half” as the race was a mile short, so who knows if I would have died like a duck at the end!
And yep, 400s! This workout is a really good confidence booster if ya pace it right!
P.s. your race=BEYOND amazing! You’re so quick!

I wouldn’t say I hate strawberries necessarily but they are not my favorite. I can’t stand the smell of them in my fridge! They have to be into tupperware. I buy them for my daughter and my husband. But give me any other berry I’m a happy girl.

Reply

I love strawberries! They are my favorite berries- close runner up are blueberries. I’m pretty sure I could live off fruit if I wanted too. ;)

If only my day job involved making play-doh! I would never quit. I record my runs using RunKeeper on my phone but I am hoping to invest in a watch soon as I start training in June for my first half marathon in September. I LOVE strawberries dipped in sugar (give me something healthy and I can guarantee make it unhealthy). My favorite speed workouts are ladders (100m 200m, 400m, 800m, 400m, 200m, 100m) and intervals (usually sprint the straight aways and jog the curves) at the track.

Laying down after a run or workout is the best haha I probably end up staying on the ground for a little too long though :) I’ve been using wireless headphones for a few months and love them! My boyfriend got me a pair of Red Fox and I’m hooked on them.

Reply

I love blueberries best.
I love eating in the car.
I love home made play doh!
:)

I love all berries, I would have a hard time choosing between strawberries and blueberries.

Tuesday tangent: bananas are actually a berry.

My running pyramid: 1 mile warm up, 2 laps @ half marathon pace, 2 minute recovery, 1 lap @ 10k pace, 2 minute recovery, 1 lap 5k pace, 2 minute recovery, 200 meters sprint, 2 minute recovery and then reverse starting with 5k pace.

I keep track with my Garmin and a running journal. I like to see what I ate, how I felt, etc.

Um…are they really? They’re a berry?

Reply

More, I think, that they’re related in the same way a strawberry is. From Stamford U ” Strawberries and raspberries aren’t really berries in the botanical sense. They are derived from a single flower with more than one ovary, making them an aggregate fruit. True berries are simple fruits stemming from one flower with one ovary and typically have several seeds. Tomatoes fall into this group, as do pomegranates, kiwis and—believe it or not—bananas. (Their seeds are so tiny it’s easy to forget they’re there.)”

I’m a food geek.

I’m recording my runs on mapmyrun. Mainly so I know how many I am doing.. and I remember signing up for a challenge for the year so I want to make sure they all count lol

I cannot wait to lie down on the ground after my next race! :)

How come you don’t strength train leading up to a race?

What happened to the dog you were going to get?

I’m crazy about blackberries! A couple of weeks ago I bought a pair of BackBeat Fit wireless headphones at the Nashville Country Music Marathon expo. They are my first pair of wireless headphones and so far I am loving them!!!

Reply

yum strawberries! I’m obsessed with recording workouts on Strava and races on my blog :)

Reply

I have been thinking about wireless headphones but i feel like they ll fall of my head! Try them and let us know how they are :)

A wednesday morning tangent really – had my iPhone switch from Chicago timezone to New York timezone and I did not realize it so I was ready for work at 4:30 instead of 5:30 which was already 1.5 hours earlier than normal. Today is going to be a long day!
I use my Garmin Vivoactive to record my runs and I am definitely looking into getting a pair of wireless headphones because the dangly string drives me crazyyyy while running!

Working on working on speed workouts – joined two running groups recently – one does a Thursday evening group run and the Tuesday runs are track workouts so the track workouts should help with my speed workouts!

Brooke really seems to be perfecting that serious look of hers! It is just too cute! :)
