1k repeats, the perfect tank for HEAT (just really looking forward to summer) and remember when…

I think that you and I can agree that new running clothes makes it really easy to get out the door and start our workout.  Also, the brighter the piece of clothing the more exciting in my opinion.

I made Megan pause the stair climber to take a picture of me.  Talk about a good friend.

I’ve been wanting a SUPER lightweight tank for my treadmill runs to prevent overheating (especially when I am doing a speed workout).  This one is kind of sheer, super soft and extra breezy.  I adore tanks that aren’t skin tight but still kind of fitted and plenty long enough.

I have a feeling I will want this in every color for summer running—>  I’m hoping those runs roll around really quickly.

I finally got to do the 1k workout that I posted last week from Hansons

IMG 5643

Weirdly, I really liked this workout.  I don’t know why but I’m just going to go with it and be excited that I am looking forward to speed work again.    1k = .62 miles and for the intervals I was anywhere between a 9.8-10.3 mph on the treadmill.

Who knows if doing this workout on the treadmill is easier or not than doing it outside on the roads but I was happy with my splits and my hard rate was in the 170s-180s.  For the next little while I really want to focus more on effort than times anyways.  Because I am not really training for a specific race I am not very concerned with times but I do want to push myself and get stronger so effort is where it is at.

I had a lunch date later on and went with some chicken and waffles at Station 22.  For years and years I rarely ordered anything besides salads (I really love them but was never adventurous) and lately I’ve been trying more and more random things.  It was delicious and I will probably want it again really soon.

For the rest of the day it was either raining or snowing.

IMG 5852

She always makes the best of whatever the weather is.

IMG 5816

We went to Brooke’s favorite gym for her workout of running around and climbing up the slides.   One of my New Year’s Resolutions was less scrolling and more reading and I just recently added more journal writing too.  I used to always be a journal person (ummmmmm maybe that is why I record our entire life on the internet?) and so it is fun to get back into it again.

IMG 5850

The evening was spent with our favorite crew of girls.  Brooke sure has a lot of aunts.

IMG 5858

And then I started this book and I can’t put it down.  Who needs sleep when you’ve got a good book instead?

IMG 5871

And somehow Spikey (remember when she used to weigh 7 lbs, have crazy spikey hair and sleep 80% of the day) is now spelling her name?!

Ever been much of a journal writing person?

Do you branch out when it comes to ordering food at a restaurant or do you stick to what you know you will like?

What do you look for in a running tank?  Do you like the built in sports bras?  Where do you usually go for a good workout tank?

Do you pay more attention to pace for your workouts or effort?

I’ve been really trying to run by effort only because checking pace was just driving me nuts and sucking the enjoyment out of running. I haven’t written in a journal in years but still have old ones, probably should locate those come to think of it!

I like lightweight and I don’t want a tank (or any shirt) to ride up while I’m running. I don’t want to be tugging at it while I’m running. I just like to put it on and forget it! I definitely pay more attention to effort.

I think it depends on the restaurant. I have some that I will order the same things. Always. And others that I’ve never ordered the same thing twice. But I do like to try new things, so I try to branch out a little bit at least!

I love journaling and during lent I do it every night before bed. It’s actually the best way for me to clear my head and sleep better.

I’m all about the best fabric when it comes to a running tank. I want it as light as possible and it also has to have no cotton and wick sweat really well! At least to race in. I’m less picky for running, but if I’m going to wear it for a big race I have to have everything perfect!

I’m always pretty aware of my pace and distance. After working with a coach last year its just second nature.

Reply

I honestly don’t branch out too much when I eat out. I am a pretty picky eater, so it’s usually best to go with what I already know I love.

In workouts, I pay more attention to pace than effort. I typically have certain paces I’m trying to hit, so I go for those. And that tank looks super comfy!

I try and branch out to try new things. It’s honestly how I’ve found some of my favorite restaurants.

That Brooks tank looks nice. I am already waiting for summer too. The East has been hit with serious storms and I’m not looking forward to going back.

I’ve never been much of a journal person, but I made a gratitude jar which is almost like journaling. I’m hoping to take a minute a few times a week and write down what I’m thankful for in that moment.

I usually stick to what I like at restaurants…when I order something new, I usually end up disappointed that it’s not as good as what I know and love.

That tank looks awesome! I’m always looking for something that’s lightweight (almost like you can’t even feel it).

I got much better at branching out on food as soon as I realized all the delicious stuff I was missing. And I learned that if I ordered something I wish I hadn’t, WHO CARES. why did that used to seem like a big deal?…..

Reply

EXACTLY. I swear we are the same person sometimes. We were missing out on so many amazing things haha!

Reply

I love that tank, I’ve been on the hunt for some new running shirts that I can layer in or mildly cold weather, that’s exactly the kind I like. And have a million of.
I don’t branch out when we eat out, I always order Mac n cheese, but my husband does and I always eat off his plate. So that counts right?
I love the ‘less scrolling’ comment. I’ve been making a point to read right before bed, even if it’s just a few minutes, to disengage from social media. The more social media I’m into the less I focus on my life.
I’m just starting to get back into my pace! I love seeing those numbers plummet!!! Woohoo!!

Reply

I always order something different when I go to dinner! Dan and I always end up sharing half of whatever we ordered, so I get to try two new dishes :)

I definitely pay more attention to effort, except for speed workouts. Then, I try my best to hit a certain pace. I also do this for easy workouts to make sure I’m really taking it easy, and for marathon pace runs.

Reply

Lately I’ve loved journaling! I have one of those journals where you write a line a day for an entire year. I’ve already missed a few days (oops) but I like the concept. I don’t like running tanks that are too tight around my stomach so that one looks perfect.

Reply

I don’t like the tanks with built in bras. I like flowy light weight shirts. I am not very adventurous when it comes to ordering food at a restaurant… I tend to stick to fish (salmon ususally) or a big salad.

Reply

That little voice of hers is so cute!

Reply

I used to write in a journal when I was younger, but now I also share our lives via blog.

I am getting more adventurous with eating, but I still cannot stomach beef or pork. It has been something that I have not really liked since I was a kid. Todd eats basically anything but garlic.

We are super excited about some warmer runs soon while we are on vacation! We are both short sleeved people though, so rarely do tanks.

Reply

I’ve journaled off and on for years. Right now it’s more off and but I’ve been thinking about it lately.

I go through phases with food. Right now i go for more salads etc because I’m trying to get more veggies in.

I like the built in bras for lifting but I’ll wear a separate sports bra for running.

Reply

I love that Brooks tank! Looks perfect for sweaty speed workouts! I do not like built in sports bras but love light weight tops that wick sweat well. Its all I’ve been wearing lately to the gym!
I’m a creature of habit and tend to order what I know I like. My husband will make fun of me for it, but hey, I’m okay with it!
Brooke spelling her name is so cute!

I am not much of Journal person but i do enjoy – ok truth, i am obsessed with -making lists and bullet points to remember. I do enjoy bloggging to which is a form of journaling i guess :) As for brunching since it is my favourite meal EVER i always like to be adventurous, unless i am really REALLY hungry then i want something i know i will like. I have to admit the tanks with a build in bra do come handy if you forget your sports bra or something but i am not a big fan of them, my favourite brand while in NYC -which was decent and well within my salary rate too – was C9 from target. I know they are not just for running specialized but at the time it really worked for me. Here in the UK i upgraded to a little more specialized brand called Karimor and they are pretty decent no complaint yet. As for effort vs pace i am all about improving my speed these days which does take a lot of effort!! So a combination i guess ! Have a great week everyone :D

Reply

I hate bully in sports brows. They aren’t supportive enough on their own and they are too tight with a regular sports bra.

What I order totally depends on the restaurant. I’ve never had chicken and waffles but I really want to try it.

Reply

I love journaling! I have a one-line a day book which I really like. That running top looks so comfy and I love the color. Some of my favorite running tops are actually from Target!

Reply

Love that tank! I like to stick to what I know when eating out. I have a lot of stomach problems and it’s not worth the risk of getting sick. I’m still going through a lot of allergy testing too to figure out exactly what is making me so sick.

Reply

I love Station Eleven. One of my favorites! I have started keeping a bit of a journal this year- well it is really a workout tracker plus thoughts about the day. Moleskin has a journal that has a page per day so it is perfect. Well and then my blog where the world can see the crazy I guess. This year I am trying to focus more on effort so my mental freak out of ‘I can’t go that fast’ doesn’t hold me back.

Janae – Run outside!!! Embrace the elements. I see pavement there lol. We have snow-covered streets and trails; there’s a risk of falling no matter where you are – I’ve fell once but now am extra mindful and just play with it.

I find the treadmill much easier to hit paces than I would outdoors. I don’t know if it’s because of the lack of wind/snow/extraclothing, but I’d prefer outdoors anyday as it’s more natural and healthier – and races are outdoors :) Okay, I’m off my soapbox now I promise :0

Totally trying to worry less about pace (most workouts I won’t look at my watch, just listen for the beep indicating km/mile). And now I want to journal more. Also – kick butt repeat times!!! Are you using your coach again now or plan to? Funny thing, I have tended to run much better when I ‘coached’ myself in the past. Less pressure or more listening to body….but I still like the coach idea for different workouts and to push myself too in different areas. Dilemma.

Reply

Believe me ha… I prefer outdoors over the treadmill too but I try to make the absolute best of the situation and enjoy the treadmill! As a single mom I really try not to ask for babysitting from my family unless I have to like when I am training for a race and running outside is kind of necessary. So instead I use the daycare for my run or use my friend’s treadmill so she can play by me while I run. I do get to go outside today because Brookers has something she will be going to later on without me. I’m not currently using my coach because I’m not training for anything but I will again in the future. Very interesting about your dilemma between a coach and no coach!

Reply

Sorry in advance for this super long reply.

Question: I’ve been struggling with this all day. I’m in my second week of training for a May marathon (it’s a completely flat race). I run outside every chance I get. Today, however, it is 5 degrees outside (it is getting warmer after today so I can definitely move outside for the rest of this week’s runs). While we do not have any snow, little patches have ice have formed and my breathing is more shallow in the single digit temps. Typically, I would still just run outside; however, my run today is supposed to be speed work (it’s actually similar to the run in this past weekend’s post). Because it’s so important to be hitting my pace with this workout, I think it would be more beneficial to run inside. I struggle with this every time I have to make this decision because I know running outside is the best option because races are outside and it’s good for learning that pace. I guess I’m curious about everyone’s thoughts on this. When is it actually better to run inside? Also, there’s so much conflicting information, but what is the actual difference between running outside and running on a treadmill? Are you really slower on a treadmill (I actually have my fastest times outside and struggle to maintain those outside paces on a treadmill)?

Comment: I just started working with a running coach, and I absolutely love it. My coach keeps me accountable for running all the miles I’m supposed to run, and the runs are just so different and higher intensity than what I would do on my own (usually, I would just do a mix of tempo/intervals, long runs, and recovery/regular runs in a week). It’s also just great support.

I always order the same thing depending on which restaurant I’m visiting. I find something I like, and then I’m afraid I won’t like a different dish as much.

I don’t like it when bras are built in tanks. I also like for the tank to be fitted enough so that when I get extremely sweaty it doesn’t feel like the tank is sticking to me. If it’s fitted, I don’t notice it as much as when it’s “flowy.”

Reply

I like my tank tops to be pretty loose and airy. And no built in bras!

I’m excited to follow your training for some of these shorter distances. I’m thinking of maybe focusing on the 5k next fall, so it will be useful to see how you approach it.

Reply

I am so boring at restaurants and always order some version of a salad with grilled chicken and/or a hardboiled egg. Lame. Good for you for branching out!!

Reply

I journal-ed hard when I was younger…via Live Journal, so going back to read those has been laugh out loud funny. And now I blog, so I guess I do have kind of a thing for it.

I usually branch out, but at a few places I’ve found a dish so good I’m not willing to try anything else & risk it being less tasty than what I usually order. It’s a delicate balance.

As someone with average to ample bosom I have to JUST SAY NO to the built in sports bra! Haha

I love bright colors for my workout clothes. The brighter the better! :)

I totally agree about bright running clothes. I’m convinced they make me run faster.

I love those navy shoes. Where are they from?! I am needing to switch up from me go-to converse shoes.

HEY KATIE!!! They are the best… I am having a hard time finding them online (I got these one’s during the summer) but they are Jack Purcell!

Love the tank!
I used to write in journals, but I haven’t in years. My grandma used to write down what she did EVERY single day of her life. It was so cool being able to look back on it after she passed away. She always knew what year we did what on vacation, where we ate, everything. It was just a wonderful way of recording the details and I keep thinking I should do it too.

I can’t WAIT to read Station Eleven it’s on my list!

Happy Tuesday!

I order what I like from that specific restaurant and never deviate. Otherwise I’m just disappointed. I never run in shorts or a tank which just made me realize what a body conscious person I am! ack!

Reply

I tend to stick to tighter tanks in the hot weather since looser ones sometimes drag down when they get wet from sweat (sorry, TMI!). Excited to run in a tank outside again!!

Reply

I used to be an avid journaler, but have had less time for it lately. I’d love to get back into it as well!

I need a running tank to be lightweight and long, just like you! I hate tops that are too short and ride up when I’m running. I try to pick up cheap ones at TJMaxx or at Old Navy- I refuse to spend a ton of $$ on something I just sweat all over! I can’t really run in tops with built-in bras, but I find them to be great for yoga or pilates.

Reply

I try to branch out at restaurants, but it’s much easier said than done.

I’m not terribly picky when it comes to running tanks. But, I don’t like the ones with the built-in bra. I just like a simple light, flowy, and loose tank.

Reply

That tank just really makes me want it to be SUMMER!! Wah so long to go…

I pay attention to both pace and effort but I think effort will trump pace. If im feeling like I can push it more one day i’ll up the pace but if im feeling like I cant I’ll lower the pace. Gotta listen to your body!

Reply

Ooh chicken and waffles! Excellent choice :) I tend to branch out pretty well at restaurants, except for sushi and if shrimp and grits are on the menu. Then, I know what I love.

I used to like built in bras, but the longer/more I run, the more I appreciate a good sports bra and quality tank. Not necessarily a combo of the two.

I pay more attention to pace, but am trying to run more and more with just my stopwatch so I am not a slave to my pace.

Reply

The chicken and waffles look really good!

I used to be a huge journaler – I’d write every single day. Lately I’m lucky if I write a couple times a year. I’m not sure what changed.

Reply

Isn’t blogging keeping a journal? I’m saying yes. Also, my mom always said, “never write anything down you don’t want the whole world to read”. I think this is really important advice. I have a friend who lost a 19 year old daughter and after she died both real mom and step mom read her journals. Many feelings were hurt by what were only here real true feelings. She wasn’t mean, just honest. I started to keep a journal and then panicked with every sentence. What I write down isn’t private. If something happens and my husband, sister, child reads this…I just can’t. So I stopped. I’ll stick to blogging and hope it’s enough.

I tried the 1K repeats last week when you first posted them! I did them outside on the path along the beach, which is mainly flat and straight. I was a little nervous about going too hard on the first one because I knew there’d be 4 more, so I think I was a little conservative based on how fast my 4th and 5th ones proved to be. I did a warm up mile, and then pushed it for .62 and used the next .38 to jog it out, so that each cycle ended up to be a mile. Then I did a mile to cool down, so 7 miles total. I am excited to try this again now that I have something to compare it to! Thanks for sharing this! :)

Station Eleven is an awesome book! Since you’re back on the reading & speed work trains… check out “How Bad Do You Want It” – AMAZING READ! I’m only halfway through, but it’s the perfect blend of psychology, story telling and science. Loving it!

I love built-in sports bras, because it gives me a little extra support on top of my sports bra – but I feel like they are getting harder and harder to find! I don’t love the little bit of extra bounce using a lightweight tank gives me, though the breeze is nice. Also, being on the bigger side, I don’t like anything see-through!

Reply

I’ve been trying to get into journaling! My mom got me a really nice Fossil journal for my birthday in November and I’ve been attempting to write in it at least once a week, while blogging 2-3x per week. I struggle with what to write in there?

When it comes to restaurants, it depends on where I am! I tried to branch out once at one of my favorite restaurants and HATED IT! I ordered tacos that turned out to be spicy. Spice and I DO. NOT. MIX! The tacos, I think, would have been great otherwise, but my stomach really hurt after that :(

I’ve got a few trusty tanks that I love from years ago – I like looser styles in the dri-fit material but I can never find those anymore! I just sent my stepmom the link to the Brooks tank you linked hoping she likes it and buys us both one :)

I’m a pretty adventurous eater so I like trying new foods. (I credit this to my parents who told me to try things. If I didn’t like them I didn’t have to eat them).

I like looser fitting longer tops without the bra. My girls need to be locked and loaded, those built ins aren’t particularly supportive.

I try to run by effort so I don’t end up making myself nuts.

Reply

That running tank looks fabulous to wear while running on the treadmill!

Reply

Love light-weight flowy tanks. You need those during the humid East Coast summers!

I like the idea of writing in a journal, but I can’t seem to stick to it. But I think you’re right – that’s why we blog?!?? haha It’s the same thing!

That tank is adorable and I want it in all the colors!

Just curious… What are your thoughts on the Hansons Method? I’ve been debating between it and Hal Higdon’s training guide for my next half.

I think I recommended that book in the comments on a previous post… I love it so much! I have been trying to get everyone to read it though, so maybe I am remembering posting on on FB or something. ;-P I couldn’t put it down, either. So good. Beautiful writing style.

I have similar tanks that I picked up on clearance once and they are my favorites, by far. Mine are Lucy brand, though. Great weight and feel.

I used to journal but now I buy day-planner type calendar books and just try to write a quick blurb/ thoughts each day. Less pressure esp. when I am crunched for time.

I love LOVE book suggestions and cute tank suggestions so thank you! Yes and please to both of those. I go through periods of being really good at journal writing and then months where I don’t. I’m always so thankful to be able to go back and read what I was going through or all those cute little things my daughter does. Great reminder that I need to get back to it. Happy running!

i’m confused by this 1k speed chart – if i want to run a 5k in 28mins, i should do 1k repeats, where i run .62 miles in 5:36? the kilometers are throwing me off. and it’s tuesday! ugh.

i am not much of a journaler, but i did just get the believe running journal and have been trying to keep up with it. it’s fun!

my absolute fav running tanks are the lululemon cool racerback tanks – they’re the perfect weight and are great quality!

Reply

Hey Katie!! YAY for getting the believe running journal… I LOVE that one. It is awesome and the lulu tanks are the best too and they last forever. So, I just thought of it as running .62 miles in x amount of time… I basically timed how long it took me to run .62 miles at about 90% hardest effort (you never want to go full out at 100% because we want to save full out days for race day but you really want to push yourself with these types of speed workouts.) Does that help at all or did I make it more confusing?

Reply

I like lightweight longer workout shirts and tanks for sure! I used to journal and read a LOT but have stopped the last couple of years. I’m starting a bullet journal this year and also trying to read 1 book a month. :) Thanks for sharing!

Reply

I always go into the restaurant saying I will branch out…but I always end up picking something I’ve had before and KNOW I will like. And I’m always happy! lol

The tank can have a built in bra or not – either way I’m going to have to wear my own sports bra anyway to hold the girls in place! lol

Since training by heart rate I rely solely on effort and never on pace. It’s a whole lot less stressful!!

Reply

Chicken and waffles are my favorite!!

Reply

I like tank tops to be tight enough that the bottom isn’t swinging but loose enough that it’s not skin-tight. I never use the built-in bras because they don’t provide enough support and if the bra is where we would need to be, I’m showing crazy cleavage-not what I want to worry about during a workout!

If it’s a restaurant I go to a lot, I like to try different things. If it’s a restaurant I don’t get to go to very often, I usually stick to my favorite thing.

Reply

Way to go on kicking butt with your speed workout! I seriously think you have the cutest workout clothes ever and you are always making me want to go buy more ha! And Brooke is probably the cutest thing ever! I can’t wait until my little girl can spell her name. Right now she can count to seven….she says 1,2,3,2,7 haha! It’s so cute!

what size did you get in the tank? It looks wonderful. Thanks!

I journal almost everyday. Something about putting a pen to paper is very therapeutic for me. I’m the same way with planners too!

I loved journals when I was a kid and getting back into writing and loving it!

At restaurants I usually stick to the tried and true but I’m trying more things these days. After all, I was reluctant to try to pho and now it’s my favorite. :)

I usually feel like the built in bra tanks are too tight. I have bought lots of good tanks at target, but I love love love lulu.

I love that you’re keeping a journal!

I used to journal pretty much every day when I was younger. I haven’t written in one in years…unless you count my running log.

I am usually a creature of habit when we eat out – I do try to mix things up every once in a while though.

I hate built in sports bras. I have fitted and flowy tanks, it depends on the weather, and my mood.

I’ve been trying to worry less about pace lately, because it was driving me crazy. On speedwork days I keep any eye on pace, but otherwise I’m trying to focus on effort.

So I’m catching up on some of your posts and not sure if you get all the notifications:
1) treadmill running is addictive once you start! i think it’s hard for people to imagine liking it when all they do is outside running. at the start of winter i couldn’t imagine running on the thing for more than a mile. now i’m up to 12, watching netflix, and happy as can be :)

2) i am also totally doing less scrolling and more reading and it is awesome! as much as i love all you bloggers, i’ve cut down to the “essential” =) 2 or 3 (yours obviously being one of them!) and i’ve been spending more time reading an actual book. current one is Bleak House by Charles Dickens with my run and read club (we read x number of pages per week, run together on saturday morning, and then talk about the book during the run and after for an hour at starbucks).

okay that’s my random stream of thoughts. :)

Reply

Thanks to you sharing 1k repeats, I went and performed 4 repeats last night on a treadmill. I do have to say it is hard trying to find the right pace on the treadmill to hit your goal time. I think by the 4th time I got it. Thanks for sharing.

I have always loved to write but don’t have the discipline to journal every day. However, I post to Facebook frequently and have come to view FB as a kind of modern-day journal. I do keep a training journal (I love the Believe training journal by Lauren Fleshman!), and on a whim I decided to create a blog for my current marathon training cycle…but I haven’t had the nerve to share it with anyone yet. (Putting yourself out there on the internet is intimidating! Kudos to you and other bloggers for having the confidence to do it!)

When I find something I like at a restaurant, I stick with it. Not very adventurous, but I hate the thought of ordering something different that 1) might not taste as good and 2) might not give me my money’s worth when I already know of something that will!

I’m like you when it comes to running tanks, I like them to be a bit fitted but not skintight, I like them to be light and airy, and I do not like the built-in bras (I’ve yet to find one that actually serves its purpose!). I like Brooks or Under Armour for tanks.

I pay attention to pace. Sometimes I let pace go–like during a hilly portion of a run–but I ALWAYS look at my mile splits and overall average and base the workout a success or failure based on the pace. Probably not the best way to go about it…I need to move away from the watch sometimes!

And, you didn’t ask this question but I just wanted to say that I LOVED Station Eleven! Such a beautifully written book. I couldn’t put it down, I didn’t want it to end. A part of me wants a sequel, but (SPOILER ALERT) the other part of me is content with the hopeful note on which it ended and thinks it should just be left at that.

I’ve been dealing with Plantar Fasciitis on and off for a while but it’s on the mend! I’ve never tried pool running as I think I would go crazy!
As a side note- I have Jaybirds as well and had the same issue you did pairing with my newer phone. Did you reset? Hold on button for 10 seconds until light blinks red and blue. Then try to repair. Worked for me.
As far as the weekend, I just got back from visiting family in Provo. Live in DC now and looking forward to lots of snow this weekend!!!
