Cautious confidence, why I’m still single and posterior shin splints.

Just me and my best running gal hanging out on the sidewalk after 4 miles @ an 8:29 pace.  We were reminded today about how we have to stay running on the same side of each other at all times.  Josse is always on my left when we run and it feels bizarre if she somehow ends up on my right.  She feels the same way.  We are bizarre.

We then ran into the best boss that I have ever had (or ever will have).  I was a personal assistant for years for the cutest woman in the white.  We hung out, I ran errands for her, cooked them dinner and did whatever else they needed… it was the perfect college job and I miss seeing her daily so very much.

IMG 0272

While I was gone Brooke had her phone call with her dad (they do that twice a week) and then she was pretty darn excited to show me the dog house that she built.

IMG 0273

We jetted over to see Dr. Bennett for him to work on these posterior shin splints of mine.  Two types of shin splints—>  anterior and posterior.  So basically the tendons that attach to the inner side of my shin bone are inflamed.  They really aren’t that bad currently but I am babying them so they stay happy over the next few months.

IMG 0282

Great article here about shin splints and how to help them out.  I am really trying to get closer to 180 steps per minute (I’m usually at about 165) and doing some calf/shin strength work (this article has the exercises I’ve been doing towards the end of it).

Screen Shot 2015 11 04 at 2 56 10 PM

After that my sister picked us up and we went to watch Brooke at gymnastics.

IMG 0293

He took my current running read (I’ve gone through this book a few times) out of my purse and started learning a thing or two about running.

IMG 0294

With just a few more hard runs left before the race, the actual physical training is coming to a close… BUT the mental training is more important than ever right now.

I love the idea of ‘cautious confident’—>  you know you have the potential to reach your goals because of all of your hard training BUT you remember to be cautious and avoid ruining your race by going out way too fast.   The race will not be easy but with all of the mental prep I will be ready to take on the hard parts.

My best job was definitely being a teacher for seven years. It was A LOT of work, but it is something I will cherish forever. Those kids mean the world to me.

Weird thought while running this morning: I wonder why some bagels come sliced while others don’t.

Reply

Best job I ever had was an assistant to a swim instructor. I basically played with the kids in the pool and made sure they didn’t drown. It was fun.

Favorite running book, probably My Life On The Run by Bart Yasso. I love all his stories about everything he’s experienced. It’s pretty incredible.

Wednesday night plans are just a 6 mile run, then relax! I’ve had two late nights so I want to sleep early!

Reply

Weird habit: I won’t stop a run short but it’s ok if it’s over
Best job: my current gig of running and blogging. Before this I was a creative director at curb records!
Wednesday night plans: dinner at home with the hubs!

My best job ever was working as a Pilates instructor at my undergrad. I taught two hour-long classes a week and it was so fun!
My favorite running books are Jack Daniels’ Running Formula and Brad Hudson’s Run Faster from the 5K to Marathon. They’re so rich in information that I learn something new each time I read them.
When I run I have to smile and wave at everyone I pass.

I have course work to do tonight *cries* tomorrow I have parent teacher interviews *cries even more* – but then I’m off to a cross country race with the team I coach *cries for joy*

Best job I ever had was at a university. A mix of teaching and research – perfect!

I tend to run people off the road. I blame my scoliosis (it’s incredibly mild). So if I’m running, or even walking, with a friend, I’m towards the edge of the road and they get the middle. Standard procedure.

Best job I ever had was nannying for a little girl with Downs syndrome right after college. She helped me become less selfish and more happy.

Tonight is a beach volleyball game. My workout for the day :)

Reply

I was a nanny one summer which I absolutely loved. It really made me hope I can have kids some day! My second favorite job was probably getting my masters/teaching English 101 (I was a teaching assistant, so school was my job). It was too busy and stressful for me to want to do it for the rest of my life (I love that my job now allows me to train for cool, long-distance stuff), but it was great for a couple of years.

My bestie and I have the same habit! I’m always on the left :)

Reply

hahaha I love it!!

Reply

I always have to run on the left of whoever I’m running with.

Reply

We should run together… it would work out nicely!

Best job I ever had was in college working in the suites for all the games/concerts. Free food, shows and great tips!

Love that single pic:) I just find I am happier when I am not “looking” for someone. If it happens, it will happen naturally!

Mile Markers is the MY ALL TIME favorite! Love that book!

I can’t wait to try out that core workout!

Relaxing on this Wednesday night. :)

Sooooo what is considered a ‘small calf circumference’? I am asking for a friend…..

Reply

I think the definition of that is Megan D of Utah.

I worked at kiddie Kandinsky for about 3 years. I really liked working there for the first two years and then it got crazy. All the sudden I noticed how crazy some moms are and how bad their kids were too. After I quit that job, I worked with my aunt as a marketing director assistant. That was a ton of fun but it was only a summer job so it ended quickly.

I have the same running gloves as you! I ran today, but had to run in my ice bugs. I live in Alaska, and we already have snow. Yes, I have to always be on the right side of somebody, when running with a partner. If I’m on the left it just feels awkward. :)

Reply

SNOW…. ahhhhh!!! TOO soon! I think it is going to snow here pretty soon too:) Good to know I’m not alone in the weird side habit with my running partner!

Reply

I love the running quirk you and your friend Josse share! It’s little things like that that crack me up about humans. We are so unique and funny. Also, being a PA? how fun! I love my job right now, but I think I would enjoy that job as a part time gig for a few years.

Reply

in high school i had some pretty “sweet” jobs at dip ‘n’ dots, marble slab ice creamery, and a local snow cone stand… see a trend here?

Reply

Best job was when I worked for myself. I had a home based graphic design studio. I still freelance but on site for a company now. :(
Tonight I am meeting a client to go over refreshing his logo design. I never stop working. :(

Sympathizing with your shin pain. I’m going through a little ANTERIOR shin pain myself and praying it doesn’t develop into full-on shin splints! I took the day off today, with plenty of stretching and icing, and it seems to have improved, so hopefully it won’t be a problem on my run tomorrow.

I love hearing about weird running habits. I’ve run for months with my iPod in my left hand, and now if I try to run without it or switch it to my right hand, I can’t get over how empty my left hand feels!

My best job was serving and dishwashing in a super popular family-owned pizza restaurant at the age of 14. Best pizza I’ve ever had, and I was 14, so I barely knew what I was doing but they still paid and treated me super well.

Reply

Chris is cooking dinner tonight.

What did he make?

I actually really like running on the right too so I completely understand that. With the shin splints, do you think there is a possibility it’s from the shoe not having enough cushion? I can’t remember if you said you were in the pure cadence but that might be too much support for you and be causing you to supinate (thus puttings stress in that general area). I’m a firm believer the majority of shin splint issues are caused by shoes.

Reply

I think you are dead on… I think it might have started from wearing my PureConnects for speedwork maybe? PS I need you to text me because I got a new phone and lost all of my numbers!

Wait what??? You girls didn’t enjoy the extra short shorts;) I thought for sure you would…hahah sorry! Next time I will warn ya!

i always have to run on the left if i dont i feel off balance and like im going to fall. my best friend in school was def in her right ear so she couldnt hear me unless i walked on her left side…forever trained to walk on the left now :)

Reply

I’ve been dealing with posterior shin splints for over a year :( but just recently went to a physical therapist who gave me some tips that are really paying off! It’s basically a miracle. I started doing calf strengthening like you mentioned (heel raises) and shin strengthening (balancing on one foot with my eyes closed). I also switched from wrapping my legs in ice packs to rubbing a big ice cube directly on my shins. I think what is really helping me the most is wearing an arch pad in each shoe to keep my arches from flattening out and pulling down on my shin muscles. I’m also trying to get my cadence up and take smaller steps and stop reaching out in front of myself when I run. Anyways, just wanted to share what is working for me. I hope you find a good solution!

Reply

Good to know about rubbing a big ice cube right on the shin.. I will start doing that! Good call on the arch pad too… thanks for the tips!! I really appreciate it!

Oh my goodness every time you post a picture of your nephew I just get this huge smile on my face and giggle and giggle!! He is just the cutest thing I have ever seen!!!

Seriously. The cutest. Glad he makes you happy too!

My best job was as a hostess at a restaurant in high school. My co-workers were so fun, and I met my husband there!

My Wednesday night plans include playing with my son and watching Mickey :)

Reply

Best job – secretary at my church when I was 18. Still love all the people that I worked with over 30 years ago.

I’ve always kinda hated my calves because they are ginormous (thanks, Dad!) but I guess I should be glad for their awesomeness in protecting me from shin splints!

And that part about “cautious confidence” – spot on for me! Running marathon #4 on Saturday and I’m ready, really wanting a PR, but scared a little silly all rolled up in one!

Reply

I have recently been having posterior shin pain as well. It hasn’t been terrible but noticeable on some runs. I have been icing and resting for the past couple of days. It sounds to me that I have shin splints–but how do you differentiate that from a stress fracture? I will have to start doing some of those heel raises to see if it helps! I also am contemplating using super feet insoles in my shoes to see how that helps.

Reply

Hey Mary! I am so sorry that you are struggling with this right now! That is a GREAT question about the stress fracture and one I am not quite sure on. I have had stress fractures in my tibia before and for me it was both legs hurting the same way in the same place like shin splints does… does that make sense? The pain was also way worse with the stress fractures and I couldn’t run on them anymore. But that is just what happened to me. I wish I was more help for you!

I always have to be on the left … but, I have a friend who’s death on the left side — so I’m forced to the right side. NOT natural and throws me off when we run.

Favorite running book is more a biography then training book … but “Running with Pheidippides” rocks my world and works the tear ducts. Makes a slow poke like me think I too could win the Boston Marathon.

I am doing NaNoWriMo – the national Novel writing challenge so I am trying to write 2,000 words every night towards a novel. That’s where I’ll be for the better part of tonight – right here in front of my computer.
But I did have a great run yesterday: http://runwright.net/2015/11/04/workout-wednesday-2/
Best running book I’ve read is Scott Jurek’s Born to Run

Reply

My running BFF and I are the same way! If I’m not on the right side, it’s like we’re incapable of running. It just feels so weird. It’s carried over into walking with people (like my husband) — he can’t understand why I keep slipping over to his right side.

I was in media planning at a fun advertising agency in my 20’s. I got to meet celebrities, eat at fancy places I could never afford, and go on amazing trips all while hanging out with amazingly creative people that made me laugh on a regular basis.

Best job: I taught Italian language at Boston College for two years, and I miss it so much: the students are awesome, the campus is beautiful and the atmosphere is always magic!

WOW… that sounds like an incredible job!!! I hope that job you are at now is pretty awesome too:)

I love that you guys have to be on the same side of each other for every run. That sounds like something that would throw me off!

Wednesday night plans? Fun Run at Fit2Run, and my parents are joining too! Yay!

Best job = my job right now! I teach toddler/preschool gymnastics and it’s ridiculously fun.

My favorite running book is Run Like a Girl by Mina Samuels

Wednesday night plans = burgers and Modern Family

The best job I had was working for a scrapbooking company and getting all their old/outdated/used products. It was pretty awesome! :)

I’ve only read 1 running book (I’m horrible like that..) and it was Born to Run. Which was a pretty great book!

Wednesday nights are always filled with church meetings. Since I’m with a bunch of sisters a 1 hour meeting turns into a 2.5 hour meeting… :) We like to talk! :)

Reply

I’ve read Hanson’s before but now I want to read it again and maybe give it a shot. I remember when I read it I just thought it was crazy to not run the full 20 before a marathon, but now it doesn’t seem so weird. It’s all mental anyway!

Reply

Reading your post, make me kinda think i may have shin splint :( I really hope it is not! But my favorite book would be Eat & Run :)

Reply

I cannot recall if I’ve ever seen you in compression sleeves for the shins/calves ? I wear them for everyone run and it really helps. I think now it’s more of a mental thing, but whatever works right ? I like the Zensah brand.

Reply

I’ve been dealing with posterior shin splint pain as well- it’s so frustrating! I have that same article up on my phone! In addition to doing the excercises they suggest and trying to increase my candence, I’ve been trying to up my calcium in take. Are you focusing on that at all or do you have a list of supplements your currently take? I can’t find any supplement that gives me 200% of calcium. And ha- I laughed at Megan D comment on “small calf circumference”, I read that in the article too and thought “yep, that’s my problem then”.

Reply

Weird habit: Haha, I always run on the right. I didn’t even realize it until you wrote that! I also tend to talk while running unless I’m doing speed and apparently that annoys some people because they can’t talk back.
Best job: working for a radio station = free tickets to tons of concerts!
Favorite running book: Kara Goucher’s book
Wed night: church for the kiddos and grocery shopping with my main squeeze, it’s basically a date night!

Reply

My BEST job was probably as an ice cream scooper! Every summer in college I cam home and scooped ice cream at a local, very busy ice cream shop. We made great tips and it was fun, even though we worked hard. In Grad School I assistant managed a Ben & Jerry’s to pay my rent. No one is ever angry when they get ice cream. Honestly, my current job in higher ed academics is pretty awesome too :-)

Reply

SO funny! My next running book read is the Hanson’s Half Marathon book in your pic. Focusing on the Half for now :)

My favorite job was working with native plants. It was supposed to only be a few days, but 7 years later I had to leave because I was going back to school. It doesn’t get much better than working outside with beautiful flowers.

HOW DID YOU KNOW???

I have been struggling with posterior shin splints for almost two months now. They came on suddenly and felt almost identical to a tibial stress fracture at first, but the problem won’t go away. I’ve been getting ART’d and Graston-ed and resting (pool running will be the death of me) but it still seems like every time I get back out there for a cautious 3 miles that posterior tib muscle immediately tightens up and pulls on everything. My issue is that the knotted up muscle is so deep under the gastroc (calf) that I can’t get to it to massage it out myself.

Have you been running through it? What’s been helping you? Are you able to get down to the muscle that’s causing the problem?

PS best job ever = working at the gym in college. I was a group fit instructor, nutrition advisor, floor supervisor……..all of it. Such a happy, awesome environment to work in :)

You ARE awesome! :)

I read a LOT of books (especially running ones), so I have a lot that stand out. One I really love is ‘The Long Run’. It’s about a NYC Firefighter who was hit by a bus on his bike one morning. One of the only reasons he made it through all of the trauma and surgeries is because his body was so strong and able to withstand the stress (avid runner, triathlete, etc.). It talks about the highs and lows of training and recovery, and the mental (and physical) aspects of it all. It was really inspiring to read.

Reply

I think having a certain side you like to run on is perfectly normal! My running buddy Tami and I have run 100’s and 100’s of miles together, and I am ALWAYS on her right! I don’t think we could even run any other way!

Reply

I miss my running buddy. We used to also have specific. Sides we liked to run in. But if we walked it didn’t matter, weird right? Oh and my best job I’ve ever had has been being a flower delivery girl. I did it one summer and it brought me so much joy delivering flowers
Since my name is Daisy I thought it was fitting.

Reply

Ok, I was so so happy to hear your cadence is usually 165spm. I’ve been in awe with you and your fast times for years and I constantly beat myself up because I usually don’t even come close to 170spm… The fact that your cadence is usually 165spm but you are THAT fast gives me hope ;)
