Tuesday Tangents and it is pretty precious….

-Brooke and I were staring at the clouds and then I asked her to take a picture with me.  This was her response to my request:

IMG 9931

-My mom had 10 of her grandkids over the other day… Brooke was in heaven.

IMG 9897

-This candle from Bath and Body is kind of a must at this time of year.

IMG 9888

-My sister’s baby has a sore on his big toe.  Why does he have a sore on his big toe?  Because he uses only his big toe to push off when he is scooting around.

IMG 9899

-He wanted to take a selfie of us so I let him.

IMG 9916

-Brooke is running way more than I am lately and it sure is fun to watch her.  Maybe she can write a guest post with her tips on how to Run Happy.

IMG 9912

-I’ve told you a million times about ‘You Are Special’ being my favorite children’s book… well, this is my favorite page.  I cry every. single. time.

IMG 9890

-My awesome nephew at his cross-country race with a killer look of determination and a sweet pair of the green Brooks Launch 2s.

IMG 9886

-A text that made me smile and nod when I read it from Dr. Bennett after I told him I wouldn’t be running St. George:

IMG 9867

-Brooke has been the best snuggler this last weekend.

IMG 9903

-Keeping my bag of race gear from St. George packed and out for me to see… it’ll come in handy for my plan B and really determined once I’m back to running.   PS I had a few questions about what I was planning on wearing—>  THIS TOP (all-time favorite, I have it in three colors) and THESE SHORTS.  I can’t wait to wear them soon:)  PPS I got the bag at a wedding so I don’t know where it is from.

IMG 9948

-Brooke is more patient than I am about letting her nails dry after painting them.  She waited 25 minutes to touch anything.

IMG 9936

-I took Brooke to the movies to get her out of the house yesterday because she has been such a trooper with all of my lameness lately.   I fell asleep for approximately 45 minutes with her on my lap and I am pretty sure she didn’t blink once during the movie.

IMG 9945

-Still not feeling great but I have times throughout the day that I do feel a little better = improvement.  You can read about what is going on here!   It is crazy how much things like this change my perspective.  Usually when I don’t run it is because of an injury that really only bugs me when I am running so it doesn’t effect anything else.  This time around I am excited to get back to running but more than that I think a lot about how excited I am to just feel like myself, not want to lay down all day and for food to sound good/taste good again:)   I don’t know how people do it with long term illness.  This kind of stuff makes me realize how precious our health is and I am sure going to appreciate feeling good when it happens (which should be soon according to the doctor… just stick with me for a bit more:)

Have any Tuesday Tangents to share with us?

Last movie you saw in the theatre?  How was it?

What foods (if any) upset your stomach… what foods do you stick to because they make you feel super great? PS Not talking about junk food here because I think that doesn’t feel especially great on any of our stomachs)

How is your running going these days?  Fill me in please!!

I really hope you start feeling back to normal soon! That’s the sweetest page in a book, maybe ever – thanks for sharing :)

Also, SO many foods upset my stomach that I lost track. Low FODMAP really does help though for me.

Reply

What Michele said :D I contacted her a while back about my own tummy troubles and she gave some great advice on eating…the low FOODMOP helps a lot.

Wishing you a speedy recovery and even speedier race (once you’re back in it)!

Too much fat and dairy together will bother me. I like alfredo sauce but can’t have it because I will get sick every time. Usually the cleaner the source of the food, the better I feel – so fruits, veggies, etc instead of prepackaged stuff.

I’m taking a few days off after the Twin Cities Marathon, I have another race in about 6 weeks but my hip flexor is bugging me lately. I can’t hit goal times because my hip flexor will seize up in the later miles of a race and I can’t hit my pace because of it. It’s annoying but I know once I get it strong again it will be better!

Hope you’re feeling better soon!

Oh! And you should check out The Clown of God by Tomie dePaola. It is one of my favorite books from my childhood and I cry every time I read it also. (Strega Nona and Now One Food, Now The Other are two of my other favorites by him!)

Reply

Sarah The Clown of God is so great! I came across it the other day at work and I wanted to read it but I knew I would cry! That is such a wonderful book.

Reply

Your nephew with his big toes! Hah! I guess the sore isn’t bothering him since he’s still doing it!

Your positive perspective is really great to read. I’m in the taper right now for Chicago and my calves aren’t cooperating with me. Out of no where they became super, super tight to the point that I’m not even walking properly. I know there is plenty of time for them to loosen up before the race, but it’s still super frustrating.

I hope you’re able to execute your Plan B race soon. Can’t wait to hear about it! Feel better asap, okay?! :)

Reply

I can’t do spicy foods. Really acidic things like orange juice also really upset my tummy. Hope you’re feeling better soon!!

This morning’s track workout was TOUGH. I felt kinda blah. I’m hoping my next hard workout will go a little better.

Reply

I hope you start feeling better and back to normal soon! I last saw the Martian in theaters and loved it – I want to see it again! Milk, beans, sugar, soy, and acidic foods like tomatoes can upset my stomach, but rice, oats, bananas, potatoes, Greek yogurt, and eggs are help me feel better.

Reply

I just had some strong mile repeats on the track! It’s my p all week, so it was good for my confidence.
Curries are tough on my stomach.
I haven’t been to the movies in months but I know I’ll go during my taper week!!!

Reply

Saw mission impossible last weekend. It was good.
Hang in there janae.
My Tuesday tangent is I hate commuting to work.

Reply

I’m having some good solid 6-mile runs this week resting up for a long run and a 10-mile race this weekend and next weekend. I haven’t seen a movie in so long I think the last one I saw was American Sniper! I usually go around Christmas and that’s it! Peanuts are the only food that I have trouble with…

Sometimes it takes the valleys in life to make us appreciate the beautiful things like our health. Hang in there and I’m very excited for your plan B!

Reply

Janae I think you are being smart beyond your years. I am excited to hear more about plan B (gosh my public health degree is LOLing).

Foods that upset my stomach before running are limited but yogurt is one. Yogurt and a lot of cream in my coffee (which is why I no longer drink coffee before running anyways).

Reply

Glad to hear you are feeling a little better. I ran a marathon on Sunday and got a pb so I’m still riding on that post-race high (and walking like a penguin).
Hope you are back to feeling normal very soon.

Reply

Congrats on your PB!

Reply

Thank you Annie :)

Reply

THAT IS AWESOME GIRL!! Huge congrats on the personal best and running a marathon! Keep that post-race high as long as possible but hopefully you will be walking normal again:)

I haven’t been to the movie theater in forever! I am a big Redbox fan and we recently starting renting from Vudu. I’m always a few months behind when it comes to movies :)

Weird, but lately carrots have been upsetting my stomach. The last 3 times I’ve had them, I ended up getting sick. I really don’t know if it was because of the carrots, but they were the common denominator. I stopped eating them a few weeks ago and haven’t been sick since…

Reply

Okay..that is weird. And tragic if you can’t have Carrot Cake.

Reply

I took my youngest two kids to see Hotel Transylvania 2 this weekend. They thought it was hilarious.
I am finally running full time again and hit double digits this weekend (its been since April). I got to realize how much I really took for granted the ability to run previously. I won’t do that again!

Reply

I hope you get back to feeling like yourself soon, Janae! Hang in there.

I know this is TECHNICALLY junk food, but it’s a strange one. I can’t eat Ritz crackers anymore. I have no idea what happened. But lately every time I’ve tried my stomach has rebelled. It’s probably for the best. :)

Reply

Sending you sooo many positive and healing vibes!

Reply

Glad to hear you’re starting to feel better. Hope you will be up and running soon :)
I have my first ever marathon on Sunday- really scared!!!

Reply

AHHHH MANDY!!! You’ve got this girl! One mile at a time. You’ve trained hard an now you get to celebrate all of your hard work on Sunday. PLEASE let me know how it goes!

Reply

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Reply

Good luck Mandy! You’ll do amazing!

Reply

Officially taper week for the Lake Tahoe Marathon on Sunday! Trying to really cut back on the running and give my body a break. My knees and hips have felt so achy and worn out lately and I’m ready for a break :)

Foods that make me ill – Pasta … Although bread doesn’t seem to bother me!

Hope you feel better soon!

Reply

I hope you start feeling back to normal soon!! I have to be careful with eating too much dairy and can’t eat almonds (not allergic but it seems like I am).

I’m probably one of the weird ones who doesn’t like going to the movie theater (my Mom and brother say so!). I think the intense volume of the movies, price, and the fact that you can’t control people’s annoying habits (hello, cell phone usage and loud talking) turns me off. We usually watch movies on Netflix or Redbox haha. But I will say that NOTHING beats movie theater popcorn!!!

Reply

There are tons of foods that upset my tummy – mostly the fried in oil foods. Even if it seems “healthy” like bell peppers cooked in olive oil – it can cause tummy unhappiness. But sometimes I am completely fine.

Running is going pretty great – heading into taper mode for my half marathon!

Reply

Hope you continue to see progress. Being down for the count makes you so much more grateful when you get back to running.

Running is going good over here. Peak week #1 for marathon training. 3.5 weeks til my taper…but who’s counting!?

Reply

Hope you start feeling like yourself again, Janae!

There are so many foods I cannot eat anymore it’s depressing. Like last night I ate chili, one of my faves, and I am still paying for it this morning…:(

Reply

We saw Mad Max in the theater when I was pregnant. The baby hated how loud it was! I, surprisingly, didn’t hate it.

Reply

I hope you start feeling better soon! I always feel great after eating salads (esp ones made with kale!), apples, and smoothies. The story behind your nephew’s toe sore…so cute! That little toe sticking out cracks me up haha!

Reply

Cheese and anything with a lot of chocolate bug my stomach. So you can imagine, at this time of year… I do ok as long as I watch the mount that I take in or have a little Medicine to get things back to normal though.

Reply

Love that page from your favorite children’s book!
Dairy, beans and spicy foods don’t agree with my stomach.
I really want to see Martian soon but haven’t been to the movies since January!
Continued prayers that you feel better! Looking forward to hearing about this plan B :-)

Reply

I am so glad that you are on the mend….you will be a much stronger runner because of this time to self-contemplate, but I know how difficult this must be for you.

Reply

Ran this morning after taking a few days off for IT band issues. Took 2 miles before things started feeling wonky which is four times better than last run on Thu. Now fighting a sinus infection, lovely.

Saw The Martian Sat night. It was a good film, I liked the nerdy science/engineering stuff…but I was disappointed with the profanity. I’m no wilting flower and I’ve been known to spew some bad words on occasion… but I would love to show my kids that movie, cuz they are science nerds too. I’ll wait until the TV version.

I ate a ton of popcorn that night which was baaaaaad. Why do they have so many previews? I like previews – when they don’t give away the whole movie – but I was half way through a medium popcorn before the 2 hr 15 minutes movie started!

Reply

Too many vegetables or fried food definitely upset my stomach. Oatmeal and banana are always a safe way to go for me!

Reply

Toast with jam. My running has been decent, although I’ve been resorting to the treadmill more than I like lately. Hopefully I’ll be able to do some long runs outside soon!

Reply

I was really sick years ago and because it lasted so long, I started to feel like I was never going to get better. I think it is a really common feeling. But, then I told myself, don’t go down that road and just focused on solutions. It took a while but I had to fight for myself to get better. It helped me learn to speak up and fight for myself in life. I hope you get better soon. If you don’t, keep fighting for yourself and don’t give up!!

So many foods bother me. I became allergic to milk, which precipitated being sick for so long in the past. I avoid wheat/gluten and Spicy foods. I started eating the “Eat Right For My Blood Type” foods and feel so much better.

I prefer watching movies at home. The theatre volume is too loud for me. And, people are so disrespectful at the theatre. They act like they are in their own home and that no one is near them. I wouldn’t even do those thing at home right next to my family. I would go in the other room.

I read that book to my daughter when she was younger. I loved it for her and for myself!! It heals the heart from all of the stuff the world throws our way and always puts thing in perspective.

I love Oiselle. I have a lot of their tops, shorts, and I have several pairs of the roga shorts (I love the material). I wore them at the beach the other day and put my phone in the front pocket, which is off of the liner and it was perfect. I have not tried the toolbelt shorts yet but I love the embossed look (and the toolbelt portion). Your race outfit is super cute!! We are now getting into race season in Florida with the weather turning cooler. There are tons of races coming up.

Reply

Bananas and oatmeal are my go-to when my stomach feels off. Anything dairy I try to stay away from if things are questionable. Running is going okay – hope you start to feel better soon and can get back at it!

Reply

Keep feeling better! We bought “You are Special” based on your recommendation. Oh my!!! What a beautiful book. Gets me every time… ;-)

Reply

Oh this makes me so so happy. Seriously, when we read it in the morning I feel like my whole day goes better because it puts things in perspective for me and I hope it does for Brooke too:)

Reply

The last movie I saw in a theater was McFarland USA. I went with my running group. GREAT movie!!

Reply

I am obsessed with that movie. SO glad you saw it!

Reply

I took my niece and her friend to see that same movie. Often times the animated movies are entertaining for me too – this one didn’t grab me. I also fell asleep for part of it :)

Reply

Anything that is too rich bothers me.
I started eating pretty clean, not because of weight but because it just had to be that bland. There was a time I could not eat out with friends because it was too much, and we were not even anywhere that unhealthy. It took me 1 year to heal my gut/intestines and now I an eat with the best of them, but at first I feared food because I did not know what would make me feel bad.

Reply

Haven’t been to the movies lately. My kids are all grown and nothing seems worth going right now.

I use eat chumps on my runs but now they give me the biggest nastiest cramps. Other than nothing really bothers my stomach.

Haven’t been able to run in 17 days (who’s counting?) but praying that I get back to it soon.

Glad you are doing better, sometimes we take the smallest things for granted like eating and running when we should thank god every day

Reply

I’m laughing at how your sister’s baby has a sore on his big toe from only pushing off with it. It sounds so cute. Although I do hope his toe feels better. And I hope you feel better soon too.

As for foods that bother me, both soy and whey. Bananas with pb, acai bowls, and plant protein smoothies make me feel pretty good. Also this might sound silly but the Kraft Blue Box mac and cheese always makes me feel good (I make it without milk).

Reply

saw The Martian last weekend- pretty good, not great.

ran a little over 7 miles this morning, which is a LONG run for me. I did it “Galloway” style, with a 4min run/1min walk repeat! it got me through, and I think I’m going to stick with that method for a while for my longer runs. I hope so much that you start to feeling better Janae… you’re in my thoughts and prayers!

cheers to good health! :)

I love how Brooke has been such a cuddler with you. You guys have such a great mother/daughter connection that I hope never changes. I am starting to realize dairy products and I are really not the best of friends. I can’t seem to cut out cheese though. It’s just too good.

My running = no running. Stress fractures are BRUTAL. I don’t do well with rest, but I know my body needs it :) Ready for Chicago to pass because its killing me seeing all the build up with my friends and on social media!!

Reply

Hayley… I am truly SO SO sorry about your stress fracture. I hope you are on the way to recovery! Check out my post this afternoon on setbacks… I hope it helps! You can get through this and you will come back stronger than ever!

Thank you!! I have to say your blog has been a saving grace these past few weeks :)

I’m pretty sure the last movie I saw in theatres was The Hunger Games. The first one. Because I never go to the movies because I am lame and prefer to stay home and watch movies in my jammies on the couch.

I was diagnosed with IBS years ago and there are some foods that consistently bother my stomach, and others that randomly bother my stomach, and a few things that are usually safe. I can’t eat popcorn, any tough raw veggies, or drink coffee without belly pain. But bread, rice, grilled chicken, and yogurt are all good soothers usually. And chicken strips are my comfort food, even though they aren’t healthy.

I ran my first marathon (Portland) on Sunday so I am taking a few days off from running and spoiling my feet with a pedi before finding a Halloween race to do with my hubby. I am already hungry for my next 26.2!

Reply

Large amounts of dairy and gluten seem to be the worst culprits for me lately. My stomach has been upset pretty constantly for a while now, so I’m still experimenting with what foods feel best. Pretty much anything with caffeine in it gives me heartburn too…

Reply

I’m Celiac. That should be enough info for you. So…I hope you feel better.
We saw The Martian. We loved it. I have never in my life said the “f” word and I don’t love hearing it but for some reason it didn’t bother me in the movie. Matt Damon used it appropriately and maybe if I was stuck on Mars I’d use it. So yeah. It was great.

I love your outlook on all of this- and that text is right. There will be so much more to celebrate!

Tomatoes, caffeine, chocolate & fatty foods are rough on my stomach. Green smoothies make me feel great!

Hang in there, Janae!

I love how you are staying so positive, despite not feeling 100% and battling it out with this GI issue. Can’t wait to hear about your Plan B marathon.

No running yet for me (5 weeks postpartum) but I go in next week for my 6-week follow-up and find out whether I can start exercising again. I am craving a good fall run.

Today my husband and I are meeting up with another couple who had their baby on the same day in the same hospital (an hour apart). They are both runners so it might be a match made in heaven. ☺

I cannot get over how beautiful the scenery is by you! So jealous! ;)

And, your coach totally sounds like a winner! He always knows just what to say.

I hope you’re feeling better soon. That book looks like it would make me cry too!

I just have to write that every time I come to your page a scary add pops up and fills the whole screen!

French onion soup upsets my stomach but I love it so much! And oatmeal with peanut butter fills my tummy nicely, makes me feel energized and keeps me fueled for hours!

Reply

Since the marathon (almost 2 weeks ago) I haven’t been running. I’ve got the urge to go run again… But I told myself that I would give it 2 weeks. It’s hard!

I have a super sensitive stomach -it’s amazing how many foods can upset my stomach and it’s amazing that it’s not always the same foods. -But dairy is always sort of on the list of things to at least be careful of.

I am so sorry you’re going through this! -I had a similar experience several years ago, but didn’t have such quick results and conclusions from the dr. so it went on for a long long time.

Have you tried ginger tea? It’s an “acquired taste”, but it really does help if you just sip it all day. -Also have you ever tried any essential oils? Doterra is based in Utah and makes an oil called Digestzen (or something close to that), that works wonders on my tummy when I’ve eaten one of the foods I can’t actually eat.

Hang in there, hope you’re feeling better really soon!

Tuesday Tangent: It’s perfect weather here in Philadelphia right now and I wish it’d stay this way for the next 2+ months!

Last movie I saw in theaters…Minions. It was so cute!

So many foods upset my stomach…basically anything with processed sugar. Foods that make me feel super great: any and all vegetables, especially raw veggies!

Running has been rough these days…I’m having some IT/knee issues so getting a massage early next week and hoping that fixes things!

Hi Janae,

I just wanted to let you know that you going through this makes me respect you so much more than I did before and I also think this makes you a much more relatable blogger. I used to be so envious that you seemed like an injury-prone runner and could do everything! I’m very injury prone so I would almost have to stop reading your blog the weeks I had to take off because it made me so sad to hear about running haha! But honestly I do believe that everything happens for a reason and if one good thing comes out of this, it’s that us readers feel so much more connected to you because we realize you are just like us. Praying for you and a speedy recovery!

Reply

I have felt pretty good running this week so far. The last movie I went to see was last week, the same movie you took Brooke to it was really cute. I have to very careful what I eat as well. Bananas believe it or not. Have a great day

Not too many foods upset my stomach. I can’t eat meat the night before a long run or race because it takes too long for me to digest it. Absolutely, positively, cannot ever, ever, have Xylitol or Sorbitol on a run – guaranteed to ruin a good run!

Running is going good for me. 4 weeks from Saturday I’ll be running the Canyon City Marathon. Ran a 15k race on Sunday here in Hawaii. It was 76 at the start so my times were considerably slower. I’m just hoping this heat training will translate to faster running when I get home to California!

Praying for a speedy recovery for you, Janae!

Well I was at St. George and it was great for 17 miles. Felt great and finally like I was going to have a good day. After that it was a nine mile limp to the finish. Suspect it’s a stress fracture but will see the ortho doc tomorrow. It was a tough course and my body apparently did not love it! So glad you are starting to feel better, I was sad to not see you out there!

Reply

I need you to know that I thought about you multiple times out there on the St.George course. Knowing you would have done anything to be there gave me more reason to give it my all, get over the hard parts, and just keep moving. Well, it all worked out because I ran a 3:13!!! My previous PR was a 3:29! I couldn’t take the race for granted because I knew I was lucky to be healthy enough to run it. I ran the whole thing with gratitude. Sending you healing thoughts and well wishes! You’re amazing and you will do great things in whatever race you decide to do. :) hugs!

I’m pretty sure the last movie i saw in theaters was Hunger Games, I’m so lame about going to the movies!!!

Running is picking up for me. I took most of the summer off so it’s been rough to get up and going again!

My friend’s SIL had a severe issue with her stomach and couldn’t eat ANYTHING for 6+ months. She had a tube that put nutrients in her. I honestly don’t know how people can go through something like that without punching things.

I have a pretty iron clad stomach, but green peppers and cucumbers make me burp unpleasantly, so I avoid those.

Last movie I saw in the theater: Racing Extinction. Loved it. (And not just because my name is in the credits – which I’m very proud of!) It’s a significantly important documentary by Louie Psyhoyos (Academy Award winning director of The Cove). Everyone needs to see it.

Running: Training for the Marine Corps Marathon which I’m insanely excited about. But before then (this weekend), I’m hiking Yosemite for 3 days including to the top of Half Dome. So I’ve been doing a ton of hills/stair master. My legs just might be the strongest ever.

Reply

I don’t know if you would believe me, but pb and fro yo make my stomach rumble. Now obviously I still eat them cause ummmm its pb and fro yo. Plus, who knows if they would actually make my stomach hurt if I actually at the serving size prescribed instead of 10x that. I’ll probably never know.

I am glad Brooke has been taking good care of you and I hope you get significantly better each day.

That picture of your nephew crawling with is one toe made my day. That is the cutest and funniest thing ever. Speaking of mobility, Felicity finally started walking!

My running these days is about as nonexistent as my chest.

Is it Monday yet?

Reply

I’m pretty sure PB makes my stomach rumble too…but I’m too addicted to give it up. I tried subbing almond butter, and while it is delicious it’s just not the same. Perhaps I’ll try sticking to a ‘serving’ of PB, as you suggested!

I’m happy that you’re continuing to heal. I really hope your ‘plan B’ is California International Marathon! It’s my hometown race, it’s a fast course & I’m sure you’d do great here!
I’ve been unable to run since July due to injury :-( I have just begun adding a very small amount (like 1 mile!) of running & hope to be back up to speed by the end of the year. I will NEVER take running or my health for granted again!
