Junk in = junk workouts (more than ever now) and a cabin.

I set out on my long run much later than usual yesterday and although I was wishing I was running up where we were staying in Midway (I brought two right shoes on accident so I had to drive home and run there)…  My favorite canyon/river was still as gorgeous as ever.

IMG 0733

So peaceful up there it is ridiculous.  It was about 70 degrees and cloudy and I just kind of zoned out to some Taylor Swift.

IMG 0744

It was probably one of my most difficult 14 milers but it was my own fault that it felt so hard.  At the birthday party on Friday night I ate junk.  It has been awhile since I have eaten like that because of being sick and my body was not okay with it on my run…  (ps if you are newish reader I have gastritis, an ulcer and some other fun things on the mend right now).  I don’t know why I downplay the simple equation of junk in = junk out (aka my workouts are not going to feel great) but it is time to really focus in on what foods make me feel great and what foods hurt.  14 miles @ 7:45 pace.  Next week’s long run will feel a million times better because I refuse to make the same mistake.  Other than the stomach stuff my body felt great and I’m excited to continue to build back up to where I was.

PS we stayed up at the Zermatt Resort in Midway on Friday night. It was adorable and surrounded by gorgeous mountains and cabins.

IMG 0720

I felt really cool leaving the hotel in my socks and sandals rather than my running shoes.  PSA—>  before you travel make sure that you pack your running stuff perfectly (who cares about the other stuff.. the running clothes/shoes/gear is all that really matters right;)

IMG 0721

Post long-run, shower and lunch (two sweet potatoes and a turkey burger—>  my stomach loves this meal!) we headed up a different canyon to stay at a friend’s cabin.  I try to stay as busy as possible when Brookie is gone:)

IMG 0755

Horses, games, ping-pong, laughing like crazy… it was a good night.

Can’t wait to see this silly girl later on today!  She told me that this is her ‘afraid face.’

Eat some healthy food girl you don’t want more stomach problems! Those Utah canyons sure are gorgeous. Always wear sunglasses in my run. I live in Phienix so I’m pretty sure my eyeballs would burn if I didn’t wear them!

I can’t run without my sunglasses. I hate squinting; it makes my whole body feel tense while I’m running.

It is pretty amazing how what we eat is so directly related to how we feel!

Today is church, run, relax! Long run today since I had to work yesterday!

I prefer hats to sunglasses when I run. No long run this weekend, it’s coming up on Wednesday. And last night I had wonderful sweet potato fries and strawberry lemonade!!

Reply

I’ve never found a pair of running sunglasses I love, and I mostly run in the dark anyway! I also feel like what I eat really matters if I want to perform well.

Reply

I wear Maui Jim sunglasses when I run. They have a nose piece that gets caught in my hair so I usually wear a visor or hat so if I need to lift the glasses I can keep them out of my hair :)
I’m supposed to run 10 today. Last double digit run before the NYC marathon. I’m still battling a sinus infection and the antibiotics have made my tummy wonky so I’m playing it by ear.
I can’t taste much so I haven’t really enjoyed food this weekend.

Reply

I now only run in hats, so I don’t wear sunglasses anymore. I find I like that better!

I was in a drop back week yesterday, so only 12 miles, but I am battling a pretty intense head cold, so I didn’t feel great. I am hoping my 5 miles today feel better! I am resting lots to kick this thing!

No good for.for.me because I can’t taste anything:( But hot soup was wonderful last night!

Reply

I always wear sunglasses, partly to calm the glare but I am also afraid of getting road debris (sand, etc) in my eyes.

Reply

My long run was awesome yesterday mainly because the weather was crisp and perfect! Most delicious thing I ate this weekend? Hmm, toss up between Cheesecake Factory salad and the roasted sweet potatoes I had at a restaurant last night :)

Reply

I have a pair of oakleys but never wear them. I should be better about it!
3 things: run, biscuit love breakfast, church
I had a strong long run! 16 miles with the last five faster than GMP.
Vegan chocolate cake!!

I have never been able to find a pair of running glasses that work for me. However, most of the days I run around 4:00 AM so they aren’t needed :)

I 100% agree that junk = junk out on long runs. I can always tell a difference if I fuel my body with good for me foods rather than just foods that look and taste good in the moment.

This weekend I took a running break to have a girls weekend with my mom!

I love the fall pictures!! They are gorgeous!! Keep them coming!! It was my favorite season and since I live in Florida, I see fall through the eyes of others. Three things: ran this morning, church, and a drive over to Clearwater this afternoon with my family. I am glad your are getting your mileage back up there and learning what food work for you and what foods don’t.

Had a 10-miler with a friend yesterday that went great! First double digit run since the marathon and we chatted all the miles away.

Three things on the agenda today: Easy shakeout run (maybe) + Dog park + Apple orchard!!

Looks like you had a great weekend so far!
PS- Where did you find your beige jacket?! I’ve been looking for one like that!

Reply

i second the question about the beige jacket. i love how long it is.

Hey girls!!! Thank you!!! Here is the link:

It is out of stock but I bet if you call them they can order some in for you! Hope you are having a beautiful Sunday and yay Arth for the post marathon double digit run!

My long run was an 8 miler on Friday. I got to run with my husband on Jekyll Island and it was a great run!

You’re so right about the impact junk food has on our running performance. Why do they make it taste so good???

Reply

I hate that after having a busy, fun weekend I have to start easing back into the normal routien. Church today, I’m going to add a little reading and laziness in there too.

Reply

Most delicious thing eaten this weekend = angel food cake for my birthday!
I ran today but just 3.1 miles. 5 weeks postpartum today so trying to ease back into things.

Reply

I only wear my sunglasses (Oakleys of some kind….) if I’m running out in the open, aka no shade on my route.

I ran a personal best for me at a 5k this a.m.!! Seconds away from getting under 25 minutes… I am DETERMINED in these next couple months to break it!

And yes… I have a hard time, too, avoiding junk food when it is easily available. And diet soda. And beer. Why does it have to taste so good?? Let’s both aim to eat healthy this week! Ready, go! ;)

Reply

I don’t wear sunglasses when running. I prefer a hat instead.
Three things- run, baking pumpkin muffins, relaxing
I ran the Monster Run 5 miler last night! It was a cold one but placed 7th out of 61 in my AG which was cool.
I’ve been on a breakfast sandwich kick- WW English muffin, fried egg, bit of cheese, Dijon mustard and deli turkey. So good!
Looks like a great getaway with your girlfriends! Excited for you to see Brooke tonight! Time away is hard.

Well, I wasn’t supposed to have a long run this weekend but I mistakenly missed my 10k race yesterday. I thought it was today, until I got an email thanking everyone for coming out to the race and how great the weather was. :/ I was SO BUMMED. So instead of racing a 10k, I ran a couple of back to back long runs (16 miles, then 14 miles).

Reply

My favorite running sunglasses are an inexpensive pair that I purchased on the street. They stay perfectly in place and don’t dig into that soft spot behind my ear. $15 and I have had them over a year.

Mowing the lawn, raking leaves and visiting my in-laws. (Which is a very good day, I like doing all of these things). Well maybe not mowing, but I get satisfaction from a neat yard. :)

I split a chocolate GF cupcake with my husband, it was delicious. I had my weekly cup of coffee and a Thanksgiving meatball. (Cranberries, onions and I think pine nuts were in there too).

Reply

Love the sunglasses you have on! Way cool! I sometimes run in sunglasses, but still looking for the perfect pair.

I PR’D yesterday at a local 5K with time of 25:29!!! I was pretty excited! Felt like crap due to a head cold, and figures I run my best time. Today, 10 miles with friends at a 9:56 pace (much slower than you…. you are speedy) but again, all this with a head cold. But I think dealing with stomach troubles is much worse!! Feel better soon!

Loved your pics! Beautiful scenery!!!

Reply

Girl!!!! Way to go on you pr… And your ten miles girl!!! All with a head cold?! You are amazing!

Reply

I always wear sunnies! Same with sunblock, even in the winter. Well, especially in the winter here, because SoCal is sunny haha but even back east i wear it all!

today i am working, then meeting up for dinner with a friend, then picking up friends at the airport… yaaaay

it was an okay long run. 14 miles from home to work, and it kind of sucked and took me longer than i thought it would. I’m thinking about backing out of the 50k i signed up for, and just building my mileage back up.

i had two amazing sandwiches! so dang good.

Reply

I wear Oakley sunglasses but wear hats and toques a lot also. Maybe the last double digit temp day here in central Manitoba so I am going to spend time outside today. Got 7 miles in but planning to do some backyard hiking. My favourite kind of day- exploring.
What’s the name of the trail you were running on? Passing through that area in December and would love to get a run on it.

Reply

I love running to Taylor Swift’s new songs!

Reply

Ive never worn sunglasses while I run but there have been a couple times I wish I had them. I think when I get sweaty and theyre on my face they would bother me but in those few times when youre running directlyyy into the sun they would be good to have

Reply

Aw girl! You should have just taken the day off to rest. You’re too dedicated to your training. Enjoy your time with your friends next time! You deserve some rest. I know you’ve been through a lot recently. <3

So I started my morning with a healthy little yogurt, an apple with a little almond butter and then my husband came home from camping and I finished off with a mid morning snack of marshmallows.

Don’t judge. Totally worth it.

Today I’m going through photos, painting and preparing packages to mail. It’s all about being productive.

I am healing from my Achilles Tendinitis and I’m on day three of virtually no pain from seeing the totally legit completely awesome I think I love him acupuncturist, Dr. Fu. Between that and my daily prayers I may actually see the road in my running shoes again.

Reply

I am with you on the junk in, junk out. It’s just not worth it, but I have also done that myself and paid the price.
I ran a half today and took 3 minutes off last months time… only 9 minutes away from my PR ;) But improvement is improvement.
I have never found sunglasses that I like to run in but am always squinting and hate it.

Reply

You look soo pretty in the horse/jacket picture! Frame worthy!

Reply

First, love the beige jacket! :)

I can’t wear sunglasses on runs because of wearing glasses – occasionally I’ll have contacts in, but to be honest it’s probably cloudy 90% of the time here!
Three things I did today: went for a run, grocery shopping, watched too much TV (Supernatural marathon).
My long run was 8 miles today, went great!

Reply

I ran my 8th half marathon today! And I don’t usually wear sunglasses but today I did (my free chocolate milk sunglasses from the Utah Dairy Council LOL) and I’m glad I did! Not only did they help with the sun but it was bitter cold and they helped keep the cold wind out of my eyes!

Reply

I never wear sunglasses, running or otherwise, even though I live in Florida.

So today I went on a run of 8.5 miles, and afterward checked how long it took me, and was shocked to see that I was running only slightly slower than before my muscle strain last month! It was the fastest I’ve run in a while, and it felt great. BUT… afterward my quad in my OTHER leg started to hurt and it still feels kind of tight and I’m terrified that I’m going to get another muscle strain! So I’m considering taking tomorrow off, hoping that will prevent anything from going wrong…

The best thing I’ve eaten this weekend was a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, which shows that I haven’t been eating very impressive things the past couple of days. But I’m baking bread right now, and I expect that will jump to the top of the list when I taste it tonight.

Reply

My sister and I made apple cider donuts this morning that were pretty good and very fall tasting! I know exactly what you mean about the whole junk food thing- I also have the same sort of feelings when I’ve had too much to eat. I’ve been trying to work more on portion control lately because sometimes when I taste something delicious, I eat it like I’m never going to have it again.

Reply

I ran a half marathon this morning and ate a really delicious brunch afterward! The chaffing was REAL today! Gahhh it’s never happened to me before and I was definitely not prepared. How do you avoid it since you do so many long runs?

Reply

Sunglasses are a must for me, although I’m not loyal to any specific brand.

No long run for me this weekend…I am starting a second round of P90X!

The most delicious thing I ate was french onion soup with crusty bread and cheese on top!! (Sooooo good!)

Reply

Gack, junk workouts suck. But at least you’ve burned through it now.

Reply

I’m relaxing after the Chicago marathon last weekend so my longest run was a local5k yesterday morning. The best food I ate this weekend was my homemade kale salad and dressing with breadsticks. YUM. And I always wear sunglasses even on cloudy days. My husband found a pair of some great sun sunglasses in the Gulf of Mexico and they are perfect. It’s almost like the ocean gave them to me to run in. :)

Reply

I like that “junk in = junk workouts” good reminder. Glad you’re feeling better!

Such beautiful scenery!

I have a pair of Puma sunglasses that are great for running, but as soon as I’m done I swap ’em out for my regular pair.

We had a surprise birthday party for my mom last night, and the nacho appetizers that were served were a pretty dang tasty treat after my 17-miler earlier in the day.

Reply

I only wear sunglasses when the sun’s out.

Church, and then dessert with my family.

The best thing I ate was some yummy treats called Buckeyes that my sister made for dessert tonight. Basically powdered sugar, peanut butter balls, and then dipped in chocolate. So good! :)

Reply

What an adorable palomino horse! And I don’t like sunglasses. I’m weird.

I had the most amazing beef/shrimp and vegetable fried rice this weekend! I really love Chinese food and it’s been way too long since I’ve had it!

Reply

That cabin looks amazing! I am now always going to check that I have both L and R shoes before leaving on vacay :)

Reply

that looks amazingly peaceful! Only you would have enough running shoes to bring two right ones! ;)

I had a 10-mile race yesterday and it went well! I don’t wear sunglasses, but I feel like if I had a good pair made for running, I would. I had Mexican popsicles last night from this very authentic place in town and they were so worth the side effects!

Two comments in one day- its a record (: anyhow just thought Id tell you I have Diverculitis so I feel you on the stomach front. White rice is my constant companion. I don’t even care that I cant have certain junk anymore. It just isn’t worth the pain and running feels like my guts are exploding. No bueno. For me the white bread, rice…cake(; all the no no starches- they feel great. So I eat them. Listening to your body is key, I think. Hope you find your happy place tummy wise soon!

My cheapo Target sunglasses are scratched. :( I’m trying to decide whether I should splurge for a pair of nice ones that will also likely get scratched/lost/broken/whatever, or if I should just stick with my go-to Target sunglasses…

What an awesome trip to go on while Brooke is away! I LOVE a good cabin haha. PS- I just read your 5 year blog-iversary post and I just wanted to say I’ve loved your blog for so many years. I really appreciate how you’re always real and yourself – even if your posts are less rainbow-font colored now ;). It’s really inspirational how you’re able to remain positive and open about the difficult things that life has thrown your way. Anyway sorry for the long winded comment but you’re amazing Janae and I hope you always remember that AND I know that life just has so many great things in store for you-OK now I’m done writing!!

I do run with sunglasses, can’t go without. Having to run with my cheapy AE sunglasses because my good pair broke in the scooter storage. Boo.

Today, I’m singing, napping, and eating. Not much different than any other day…

I ran a 10k on Saturday. It went well, although my time wouldn’t agree.
