It is to be expected when coming back and running super powers.

My run didn’t feel great at all (probably because of something I ate) but it is to be expected to have some not so great days when you are getting over your body revolting against you.  But I did get some endorphins which in turn helped my stomach.  And I feel better than I did last weekend.  So yeah, jumping on the no-more-complaining-train for the rest of this post:)

Brooke sure has become quite the photographer these days.

We came home and stretched while playing doggies.  Now when I ask Brooke for a kiss she tries (and sometimes succeeds) to lick my face to give me a ‘puppy kiss.’

IMG 0308

This was our compromise.  She originally wanted to bring 12 dogs with us around town.

You know something exciting is going down when you both get an orange wristband….

Cornbelly’s for the win.

We watched some pigs sprint around a track.

Brooke and her friends shared the homemade mini chocolate chip cookies that they sell there and they loved them.

Never seen drinks sold like this before….

And my evening included this lovely game:

PS Janelle ROCKED her first marathon yesterday and she says her HRG shirt gave her super powers to kill her sub-4 goal!! Way to go girl!

PPS my cute friend from Jr. High (we met in 7th grade sewing class… she was always helping me because I had no idea what I was doing with the sewing machine and that is where our friendship began) is training for the Honolulu Marathon.  She fueled her long run yesterday with the good stuff.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF THE CHICAGO MARATHON RUNNERS TODAY!!!!

I got up early for me today. Though I don’t sleep in very well anymore.

I had an awesome run yesterday and I’m hoping for another good long run today!

Unfortunately I do fuel with candy sometimes and it’s not a good idea. I got 12 miles in this weekend. Not bad.

I’m glad you’re feeling a bit better.

Brooke really needs a puppy! I vote for a mini dachshund…

Oh that picture of Brooje reaching up to the bowl of cookies is priceless! Talk about capturing the moment. Highlight of my weekend was waking up feeling good yesterday. I think my tibia fracture is finally healed. It’s been a long torturous 3 months.

Reply

I LOVE the picture of the cookies with Brooke’s expression

I hope you are feeling better. I love all of the adventures you go on with her.

I was out taking pictures at that marathon that Janelle rocked yesterday! We had a perfect running day here in CT yesterday, congrats to Janelle and all the runners!

Reply

I’m in DC with my husband. We ran to the Lincoln Memorial and watched the sunrise from the steps….gorgeous!
Does chocolate GU count as candy, lol?!! It tastes like frosting!
We got up really early.

Reply

I’m naturally an early riser so I got up early this morning. I took the week off running after my marathon next week and am looking forward to resuming running in a few days!

Reply

I ran my first ultra yesterday (55k)! It was epic and beautiful and so many other things. My training paid off in a huge way and I learned so many lessons about working towards a goal and getting through the mental challenges of long distances. The body is able, it’s the mind that needs work. Good job on your recovery!

Up at 6 this morning!!
I tried fueling with candy corn a few times but I do so much better with gus bc I don’t have to chew it.

Reply

My kids had swedish fish for the first time this weekend at a party and are obsessed :) They think I don’t know about these thing and that’s why they don’t eat them regularly, lol!

Highlight was dinner with friends after 22 miles!

Reply

I’ve never fueled a run with candy before but I had a friend who swore by starburst jelly beans as fuel.

Highlight of my weekend was going to the Notre Dame vs. Navy game and finding out that our seats were sitting on the field!

Reply

In our house, there’s no such thing as sleeping in. Our girls get up between 6:30 and 7 no matter what.

I had my race yesterday that went ok. It was super cold for me and I had some slight asthma problems. Then we went to cornbellys with some friends. That place is huge!

Reply

I am a fan of trader joe’s jelly beans for my long runs! My son used to carry all of his stuffed doggies around too. They still sit on his bed :)

Reply

Yes, starburst for the win!
Half marathon yesterday.?

Highlight of my weekend so far – my 12 year old son won 1st place in a local skateboard competition. I always think the things he does on that board are amazing but I don’t think he believes me because I’m his mom. This will do so much for his confidence.
Candy to fuel – absolutely! Fuzzy peaches are my favorite!
I “slept in” today (8:40am) but I did my long run yesterday so it’s all good – it’s Thanksgiving weekend in Canada so I am spending the day making a turkey and all the fixings and giving thanks for everything that I have….my life may not have turned out the way I had pictured it but I am so very thankful for what it has given me.
I hope you are feeling back to yourself soon Janae!

I’m up early because I get to run in a bit. So glad you could get out for another run and are on your way to recovery.

Highlight of my weekend was Tennessee beating Georgia!!! :) I’m glad you got to run something weekend! I haven’t ever eaten candy on a run but I have been known to eat chocolate beforehand! I live for mornings and love waking up early. I hope you have a great Sunday

Reply

Brooke has such great style! ;)

Highlight of my weekend: Campfire with my family last night.

I’ve never tried using candy on purpose, but when I eat Sour Patch Kids before running, I always feel like I have more energy!

Slept in today and it was amazinggg.

Reply

My husband and I saw Martian and went to a haunted house!
I have not fueled my runs with candy before but have eaten it beforehand.
I didn’t set an alarm to see how late I would sleep since I’ve been feeling tired and woke up at 8:30 with is definitely sleeping in for me. Felt great!
Hope you and Brooke have a wonderful Sunday!

Reply

Andrew and I slept almost NINE HOURS last night. I feel like the queen of the world right now. I needed that sleep SO BAD. Yay. Happy dance. Jazz hands. It’s gonna be a good one.

Reply

Nine hours… girl that makes me so so happy!! It is amazing what a good night of sleep will do for a human:) Enjoy the rest of your day!

Reply

I got to just chill at home. I haven’t been able to do that because we had a funeral last weekend that was out of town, and then the marathon before that. So it was nice to get crap done around the house.

I love fueling my runs with candy. It’s cheaper than buying gu and chews. I really love Swedish Fish and fruit snacks!

I slept in yesterday morning and this morning! It was so nice! I never expected 7:30 to be a sleep in time, but it is.

Reply

The highlight of my weekend was baking a healthy pumpkin pie and it turning out great! Now I get to have a slice tonight ;)

I haven’t had candy in over a year…though I love fueling my runs with dates (nature’s candy!) and they digest very well mid long run.

I got up at 7am, which is sort of like sleeping in, I guess….I was hoping for 8 but at least it’s better than 6!

Reply

Girl, I fuel my life with candy!!!! Sour patch kids are my fav right now. I am so happy you are able to run again. Just be patient and listen to your body. Have great Sunday.

Yesterday I ran faster and longer than planned (I have stomach issues too) and was able to keep it going! Bonus for the weekend.

Candy as fuel-I used to use gummi Bears and now I carry a starlight mint in case my tummy needs it. In the olden days we used to get snicker bars and gummi Bears during marathons!

Got up early for a Sunday to measure out our home XC course for a meet next weekend. It was cold and blue sky with sun!

Reply

whoa.. brooke is so cute..
I’m beginner of running..
good to follow this blog

Reply

I was up at 3am due to a 5week old who did not want to go back to sleep. But at least it is Sunday and I can take a nap. Sleep these days is very chunky. :)

I like to fuel my runs and long bike rides with gummy bears and skittles!

Reply

You are so cute :)

Reply

I slept in! I am a week away from my next half marathon and I’m afraid I got a touch of the stomach bug or ate something bad this weekend. I lost 4 pounds since yesterday so I’m not sure I’m going to make it out for my 6 miler today but I will at least go for a walk because it’s 80 degrees here in Minneapolis and probably the last warm day of the year!

Reply

highlight of the weekend would probably be either getting 23 hours of sleep (hyperbole, but still. lots of sleep) and doing some good writing. sometimes i fuel my run with candy, but mostly with salted caramel gus. oh man, theyre good! especially after being kept in the fridge.

I woke up early this morning, mostly because I needed to drive my friends to the airport! now im home and i’m considering napping, but i probably should go for a run/hike… but it’s 102 degrees out, so i kiiiind of dont want to go outside….

Reply

I ran the Hartford marathon too (just like Janelle in the HRG tank)! :) It was a beautiful day and I enjoyed every moment. Glad your stomach is improving – sending positive vibes your way! :)

Reply

Highlight for me was an 18 mile bike ride while my hubby ran, since I still can’t run.

I love to eat fruity jelly beans on my run although my husband thinks is a horrible idea. Men, what do they know???

Woke up early and went to church first thing. Glad to see that you are doing bettef. One day at the time is all we can do while we recover

Reply

I woke up early this morning to run the B.A.A half marathon. It was also the highlight of my weekend. I beat my last years time by 10min which felt great. I kept repeating your mantra “I can do hard things” and it got my through the toughest parts. I hope your stomach is feeling better and you can get back to training soon!

Reply

TEN MINUTES… girl you rocked your 1/2 marathon!! Way to go. So glad that mantra helped… it is the best! Enjoy the rest of your day:)

Reply

I think that you should try a high carb paleo type diet kiddo. Try and eat chicken, beef, eggs, salmon/shrimp or any seafood + white rice, sweet potatoes, white potatoes, sweet potatoes and all cooked veggies. Stay away from fruit, dairy, and all bread and wheat products just for now.

I think it might help your tummy. :)

Reply

Brooke is sooo adorable with her braids and all those stuffed animals! :) Presh. Looks like a fun weekend!

Reply

I finished my first half marathon today! I’m 34, mom of two and it was amazing! I fueled with Swedish fish and enjoyed every second. Thank you from the bottom of my Brooks for being an inspiration! Hope your healing continues and can’t wait to keep rooting for you and that sub 3!

Reply

Congratulations!!!!!

Reply

Thank you!

Reply

MELISSA!!! WAY TO GO GIRL!! You should be soo proud of yourself and I bet your two kiddos are ridiculously proud too:) Thank you for your sweet comment and enjoy the post-race high!

Candy on a run kinda churns my stomach, so nope, that’s not fuel for me! I got up early and ran before the family woke up -the perfect way to start the day in my opinion. We had a great weekend of visiting a pumpkin patch and exploring some caves. Loving the cooler Fall weather around here!
Hope your stomach keeps feeling better each day!!

Reply

The cooler weather is definately a highlight of the weekend…………..it was too hot last week……….this week promises perfect temps in the low 70’s!

I have tried Swedish Fish on my runs, but to me it feels like chewing requires too much energy! Ha! I use Huma gels or the little packs of kids fruit snacks………..they are not too chewy and are already in little packs.

I had to be up at 6………but the dog I was housesitting for was happy to keep sleeping and I wish I could have snuggled next to her for a few more hours!!

Brooke is funny with her puppies!

Reply

Do you still run with swedish fish?

Reply

No, not anymore. My coach won’t let me;)

Reply

I had some highlights and lowlights. Two highlights was Harvest Fest yesterday and having birthday lunch with my son who just turned 21. The “lowlight” is that we have 70 mile/hr wind gusts today and I didn’t get my long run in yesterday. I’m leaving for a business trip tomorrow so I guess I’ll just have to live without it this week. :-(

I haven’t used candy to fuel my runs, but if I did it would definitely be Swedish Fish.

I got up at 6:30 this morning to watch the Chicago Marathon live on TV.

Reply

I did my first full marathon today!!!
Thanks for your comments last week and your encouragement.
It really helped :)
It was tough as I cramped real bad at mile 14 but pushed through.
Proud to say I’m a marathoner!

Reply

AHHHHH MANDY!!! HUGE CONGRATULATIONS!! Girl, you are amazing! You pushed through cramping (with 12 miles still to go!?!?). WOW.

Reply

I got up at 6:30 this morning for the best run I’ve had in two weeks. I’m almost back up to my pre-injury pace! That was probably the highlight of my weekend.

Reply

SO MANY highlights: breakfast out, halloween custom shopping, pumpkin patch!
I really like dried fruit esp mango’s!
We slept in, 7 am!! :)

Reply

I’m so bummed that your body is not reacting well to running right now. :( You’ve been at the forefront of my prayers Janae!

Reply

I’m glad to hear you’re on the mend, and realizing that your comeback doesn’t have to happen super fast in order to happen. I like to think of every life obstacle as part of my marathon/ultra training. Patience, dealing with pain, overcoming heartache — it all fits in!
My weekend was awesome. I did sleep in a bit today because I work tonight. I used to fuel my runs with 100% candy, but found it just doesn’t give me the calories I need to really go the distance. I now fuel my days with candy instead ;)
That picture of Brooke with the cookies is adorable! LOVE her boots. She’s a fraction of my age and already way more stylish than I will ever be.

Reply

Up early this morning and then tuned in for the live feed of the Chicago Marathon!
It is brutally hot here – so, so hot!
I have tried Swedish Fish before a long run and I love them!
Highlight of my weekend: I ran 7 miles!!!

Reply

Hang in there Janae – all of these challenges will make your eventual success sweeter!
Your friend’s marathon time is amazing!
Today I finished my first marathon (Chicago) and am now enjoying a diet coke……
Your advice to pump the arms was put to good use on the course today. I know I remember reading that on your blog once upon a time…

Reply

AHHHHHHH CATHY!!! Huge congrats on your first marathon!! That is so awesome and I bet that post-marathon diet coke tasted amazing. So glad the arm pumping helped:) Way to go today Cathy!

Reply

Highlight has to be doing out first marathon! Did it in Long Beach, CA and it was hot- like 86 degrees hot. But we did it!! Thanks Janae for all your tips, I feel like I should share my medal with you!! Glad to see you are starting to feel better.

Reply

AHHHHH HUGE CONGRATS Lisa!!! Holy cow… that sounds crazy hot! You are one strong woman. I am so happy for you:) Enjoy the post-marathon high!

Reply

Oh I love those mini chocolate chips!

Reply

I ran back to back half marathons this weekend! I’m so tired. Was up at 4am on Saturday and 6 am today.
I love sweedish fish for fuel when training.

Reply

My hubby ran the Chicago marathon today – his first ever marathon!

Reply

Adorable pictures! No sleeping in for me. I have been procrastinating all weekend and still needed to prepare my lesson for church today. Highlight had to have been getting my new iphone. I’d much rather say a long run but my hip is acting up (bursitis) and running is out of the question. Never dealt with this one before but I suppose this too shall pass. You are such an inspiration Janae. Thank you.

Reply

Oh Jeanette… I am truly so sorry about your hip being lame. I hope it heals asap so that you can get out running again! Please keep me updated girl!

Reply

I once tried to fuel with the fruity flavored Mentos. I ended up eating the entire tube even before the halfway mark on an 8 or 10-miler. Not a good idea! It made me so sick!

And yeah, I totally slept in this morning and missed my early morning run.

I’m a winner all around! :(

Reply

I am a new runner and a fitness blogger too https://couchhealthandfitness.wordpress.com/ .. and I love this blog

Reply

On Friday I got up and went for a run – the first one in a long while. I’m hoping that reading your blog will help motivate me to get out there more!

I’m sorry you haven’t felt great these past two weeks or so. :(

When my niece was three she would always ask strangers, “Can I lick you?” Then she would proceed to lick up their entire face, a.k.a. give them a kiss. So cute…and so gross:)
