My legs are NOT tired… Brooke gave me a good mantra for the race.

I hope you are okay with the fact that my marathon will be mentioned on this blog of mine close to 40 times a day leading up to the race…. If I talk about it this much on here, just imagine how many times I am thinking about it a day.

Brooke hiked a mile on Saturday.   I told her at the beginning that as soon as her legs were tired that I would carry her.  I kept asking her how she was doing along the way as she was charging up the hills and each time she would tell me she was great.  On the last hill (ummm my legs were burning a bit so I have to imagine that hers were too) I asked her how she was doing and without stopping she said, ‘My legs are NOT tired.’  When Brooke gets something in her head, she is going to do it.  In her head she was going to hike all by herself without being carried and that is what she did.

So, when I am climbing Veyo (a pretty crazy mile long UPUPUPhill at mile 7) I am going to copy Brooke and keep repeating ‘my legs are NOT tired.’  She already has mastered sports psychology.  Her mental game is on.  She understands the mind-body connection and if she thinks her legs are not tired then they are not going to feel as tired.

Some things from our day yesterday:

-We ran into Candice at Old Navy.  She hooked us up with a coupon which made these boots that I fell in love with for Brooke—>  free.  Gotta love that post-shopping-awesome-deal high.

IMG 8834

-Pumpkins are out which means that we have already started to brainstorm ideas for Brooke’s Halloween costume (one of the biggest decisions of the year).

IMG 8839

-Spent the night at Laird Park in Salt Lake City.  It is our favorite and so worth the drive.

IMG 8840

Yep, she was pretending to be a doggie.

IMG 8844

-We stayed at the park way past dinner time and couldn’t wait to drive home to eat.  You know it must be good if Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives says it is ‘money.’

IMG 8854

-Speaking of the Food Network… their instagram makes me drool.  I must have:

IMG 8675

-Grilled cheese sandwiches hit the spot.

IMG 8851

-First of thousands of hot chocolate/marshmallow cups this season.

IMG 8856

-This was fun to see on Instagram.  Thanks monitorthebeat!  I’m excited to see the results real soon.

-I have to share with you Brooke’s current favorite song to sing:

-Women’s Running is having their annual Cover Runner Contest!!! Check it out HERE!

What was your dinner last night?

Do you have the same thing for breakfast each morning or do you switching things up?

Go Brooke! A mile is a lot for her little legs!

We had baked mostaccoli last night. It was amazing. I used vodka sauce from Trader Joe’s which made it 8x better than normal!

Reply

Saw that on IG too and almost died. I totally understand having marathon brain and not being able to NOT talk/think about it! I get my kids’ clothes mostly from Target, sometimes I hit the outlets for more variety.

Reply

Bagels and biscoff for breakfast always.

Reply

Well that just sounds heavenly. I’ll be over for breakfast tomorrow.

Reply

Awww it sounds like Brooke is going to be an awesome athlete like her momma! That mental toughness and determination was definitely passed down.

I almost always have the same thing for breakfast – 2 sunny side up eggs on a piece of toast! YUM! I wake up in the morning craving it. Never gets old!

Reply

My dad was out of town last night so my husband and I took my mom out for dinner at one of the places she loves but my dad doesn’t care much for. It was fun!

I switch things up in the morning or I get bored with the same things everyday. Kind of depends on if it is hot or cold out too.

Love the video of Brooke! She’s adorable!

I see a little long distance runner in the making… Go Brooke!! :)

Reply

Love Brooke’s determination! It’s amazing what kids can teach us. :)

My mantra is simple: Be bold. I want to make sure I have courage and confidence in all I do.

Reply

My Mantra has always been “The faster you run the quicker you’re done!” but I may have to borrow Brooke’s :-)

Reply

Go Brooke! A mil hike must be a lot for her little legs but she has the right attitude!
I eat some variation of oatmeal with fruit and nuts/seeds each morning. Changing the fruit seasonally helps me not to get borwd with it. I look forward to it after eacb run!
Dinner last night was omelets with red potatoes and kabocha squash. Breakfast for dinner is always a win.

Reply

Love Old Navy for my baby girl’s clothes!

Reply

I love the idea to channel your inner Brooke on veyo!!! I’m digging old navy this year, but it seems like everyone always gets a better deal! I need to know the tricks!!!

Reply

Mantra: you can do hard things!
Dinner: pumpkin ravioli with cauliflower Alfredo sauce
Breakfast: usually a green smoothie

Reply

Love Hanna Andersson for my 5 year old daughter’s clothes. They hold up so well! Dinner last night was spicy shrimp tacos, very good!

Reply

Never even heard of that brand… off to go check it out! Thanks Kristin. Ummm shrimp tacos are so ridiculously good!

Reply

I had a soft pretzel and a bowl of cereal for breakfast. Pretty sad. Well maybe it’s not too sad. I enjoyed it.
I usually have a waffle for breakfast but have been switching it up with eggs wrapped in a tortilla.

Reply

That sounds like an amazing dinner to me:) Seriously. Hope you are having an awesome day Sally!

Reply

I usually have an English muffin with PB and honey and 1 egg+2 egg whites for breakfast. It hits the spot after my runs and keeps me full until lunch.
Love Brooke’s determination! I think I know where she gets it from :-) I like to tell myself to embrace the discomfort. It helps!
I like shopping at Marshall’s ands Old Navy for my step son, you’re right, great deals!

Reply

I have been having the same breakfast every day, but it usually changes seasonally. Smoothies in the summer, oatmeal in the fall/winter. I just need something warm after a run when it’s chilly outside :)

Reply

Brooke is just too cute. My son’s only 15 months, so we do most shopping at carter’s and I have a real addiction..

Reply

When my son was little I LOVED Carter’s. They have the cutest clothes!

Reply

Target and old navy are the go to places to get our kids clothes. Mostly because they are cheaper but still cute

Breakfast and all other meals have to be switched up or I get sick of the food too easy.

Reply

I love Old Navy for my daughter. My son (7) is in the I only wear soft pants/shorts so I shop at TJ Maxx and Marshalls for those. He’s in this weird not a Small not a Medium so I have to find size 7 pants. So hard :) As for breakfast, I eat the same thing everyday – egg bake.

I can’t wait to hear how your marathon goes! I just know your going to do awsome!!!

Reply

I think you should talk about your fall marathon all the time. I cannot believe how fast it’s sneaking up here Janae. I think you are going to do truly amazing and I cannot wait to see how it goes!

Reply

Laird Park!! My cousins used to live right across the street, so I spent a lot of time there. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Reply

That is awesome. Well, I am extremely jealous of your cousin’s old house because that area is the top place that I want to move to:) So beautiful!

Reply

That’s sooo cool that they used your pic!!

There is no way I could follow Food Network on Instagram! That just sounds too dangerous!

Reply

Brooke reminds me of how I was as a child..very hard headed and wanted to do everything on my own. She’s going to be a very strong willed teenager…look out!

Reply

OK, that shake looks disgusting. I want one.

Mantra: in the movie Gattaca (a favorite) the supposedly genetically inferior Vincent swims against his test tube baby perfect brother Anton several times. In the last contest, far out to sea Anton is losing and scared they’ve swam to far. Vincent explains how he achieved all the things he was never supposed to be capable of “I never saved anything for the swim back.” It’s all about determination.

Dinner: Breakfast for dinner. Yum.

Breakfast: for running days coffee, scrambled eggs, some sausage links, and sometimes a small biscuit. Pretty much the same every time.

Brooke is going to be an awesome runner someday, I’m calling it now!

I LOVE that pumpkins are out, I can’t wait to do some carving :)

I wrote a whole post about mantras (including the ones I’m currently using to get through my injury!) http://anniesontherun.com/2015/09/09/mantras-arent-just-for-running/

Reply

GREAT POST ANNIE!!! Mantras really aren’t just for running. I hope that you heal up quickly and way to keep such an amazing attitude.

Reply

Hahah! Did you like your shout out for “I can do hard things”?! Thanks for visiting! Trying to channel your positive attitude on most days :) Also I just ordered those Brooks sweat pants you posted about a while ago. I’m VERY excited to get them!

Reply

Where in the world is that pb nutella shake from?!

Dinner last night was peanut butter on toast and yogurt on the side. Totally weird … But delicious … And zero effort.

Mantra: You ran a marathon in a torrential downpour … You can do anything.

Reply

I love breakfast. I want it for lunch and dinner, too. That is all.

Reply

“I can do hard things.” Which I think I got from your blog! :-)

Dinner last night was an Asian salad from Chick-Fil-A.

Reply

I love that Brooke is already a little runner like her mom! You are such a great influence. ☺

My son is only a week+ old, so I haven’t had to do much shopping, as everyone loves buying him clothing. I imagine when the time comes I will shop at Macys (great sales) and occasionally frequent the children’s boutiques here in town. I love supporting our local businesses!

My mantra as of late → Enjoy this moment and live in the present – you will never get this time back!

Reply

I am totally using Brooke’s mantra during my next long run. I’ve been reminding myself that I need to “get comfortable being uncomfortable” a lot lately, especially in the heat and while running uphill.

Dinner last night was Chinese takeout, because our house is a construction nightmare.

I almost always have an English muffin (or two) with peanut butter or jam. Sometimes yogurt or a banana.

Reply

I get my boys clothes from Old Navy and TJMaxx.

My mantra isn’t really a mantra, but a ‘deal’ I make with myself. When I’m tired I look at how far I have to go and tell myself that if I run half of what I have left, then I can take a break and walk. By the time that passes, I’m far enough along that I just keep running. I also used something you suggested…when my legs get tired I pump my arms.

Dinner was Buffalo Chicken Lasagna! YUMMY. A favorite at our house.

My weekday breakfast if the same: plain greek yogurt, frozen blueberries/raspberries microwaved until they make their own juice and get a little warm. Mix together. If I need a little sweetener or flavoring, I add Vanilla Stevia or almond extract or honey.

Reply

I have an almost 3 year old and I like to dress her like me as much as possible. But, I guess she should have her own style…whatever. I shop for her at Old Navy (amazing deals all the time), H&M (they have the cutest toddler clothes and awesome deals), Crazy 8, and Target. Shoes for my mini are a different story. Nordstrom Rack has some great deals on shoes…hello New Balances with flowers on them and Pink and Orange zebra print Pumas. I can’t stop getting her shoes!

Reply

My 2YO daughter has the same horse sweatshirt and also loves No More Monkeys Jumping on the Bed. We’ve been reading it before bed each night. Clearly, she and Brooke would be besties!

Reply

My mantra is “I can and I will.”

I like oatmeal for breakfast or Ezekiel toast with almond butter. I make chocolate cherry overnight oats with chia seeds so it’s a pudding. I like the consistency better than regular overnight oats.

Dinner was baked chicken with Tikka Masala seasoning, red chard, blue and red potatoes, and a salad with cucumbers I grew in my garden. First time I grew then and they’re crazy huge.

Reply

Go Brooke! I swear running is hereditary in your family. You need to do a post sometime accounting for everyone that is a runner.

Reply

I love breakfast!!! I recently made a trip to Trader Joes and picked up the pumpkin butter, I add this to my oatmeal in the mornings. SOOOO YUMMY!!!

Reply

Wow, that instagram from Food Network is making me drool too. That picture of Brooke hiking up the rocky trail is pretty adorable.

Reply

I get most of my young toddlers clothes at The Children’s Place or Gymboree. Also there is a great app called Kidizen that’s like EBay for baby and kids clothes- I’ve scored some really great deals there.

Dinner was chicken thighs and white beans I threw in the crock pot because my hubs had surgery yesterday and I wanted something quick. Paired it with this rice blend from TJ’s. Yum!

Reply

I can always go for grilled cheese!!

I buy mostly from Old Navy when it is on sale and from Children’s Place, also when it is on sale. I rarely buy clothes not on sale…. Otherwise used/hand me downs are great too. I got a full snowsuit in perfect condition for $3 last year!

Reply

Where did you get Brooke’s cute horse shirt?! I think I need it in adult version!

Reply

Hey Jenny! That one is from Old Navy too. I searched the store for a bigger version for me too so that I could match her ha. If you find one let me know;)

Reply

Hahah I used to babysit a girl who had Asperger’s Syndrome, and we would sometimes play on the Wii Fit when it was raining out. She would do the “run” and as soon as the run started, she would start repeating “Almost there…. Almost therree…. Almost there…” and so sometimes now when i’m going up a hill or over the run, i just start repeating that! makes me happy and takes me out of my head a bit :)

Reply

Gymboree has the best little girl clothes -everything is super soft and super cute -the little dresses would look fabulous on Brooke :)

Running mantra when I’m the most tired is, “it’s just one foot in front of the other”

Reply

I have to remember Brooke’s mantra for my next race. Such a good one!

Old Navy has such great deals you can’t pass up! My 2yo lives in their ruffled dresses.

I got a bread maker and have mastered the cinnamon raisin bread. So lately it’s been thick slices toasted with coconut oil and cinnamon/sugar. Yum!

Reply

Your picture makes me crave hot chocolate…and it’s still 80+ degrees here in Philly! Love the video of Brooke singing! She’s so adorable!

Last night, I made pasta with a homemade spicy tomato sauce for dinner. :)

For breakfast, I’ll switch between eggs & toast, a smoothie, or sometimes just fruit.

Reply

Brooke is so funny! Her dog obsession reminds me of my “little one” at that age (she’s now 22)! One day she told me she was going to BE a dog until we got one. She was very determined and only barked when spoken to and wanted to eat her dinner on the floor like a dog (which I refused). Long story short, she got her dog! Determined girls are amazing!

Reply

Thanks for the heads up to never follow foodnetwork on instagram. That looks so amazing I think I gained 10 pounds just looking at it :)

Dinner last night was Beef Stroganoff. Very good!

Reply

Love Brooke’s mantra! I will have to use it as well ;) Those boots are the cutest, I nee dot get them for my little girl :) And I don’t dare follow the food network IG or I would probably eat way too much junk haha!

Reply

Yay Brooke, awesome hike! My daughter was/is EXACTLY the same, stubborn and very determined!

My mantra is ‘Just Believe’ ..(in yourself, your training, your destiny).

Reply

I love Brooke’s mantra – she’s one smart little lady!! Congrats on your first hike:) Also, your hot chocolate and marshmallows is making me drool!
My mantra lately has been “don’t take things so seriously.”
Last night’s dinner was courtesy of my boyfriend – parmesan cod, corn on the cob and a stir fry. Delicious!!
And I have egg white oats for breakfast every single morning except Sunday which is PANCAKES:)

Reply

Speaking of legs not being tired, do you have a favorite brand of calf compression sleeves? I’d like to try a pair, but not just go on Amazon blindly and pick a bad set.

Reply

Hey Ken! I have always been a huge fan of Pro Compression gear… I really and truly love their products!

When I’m running up a hill that seems never ending, I tell myself, “this is MY hill. I OWN it!” (Corny, but it works and gives me the perspective that the hill is just a thing and it can’t defeat me).

Last night dinner was late so I needed something quick: open-faced, fried egg sandwich with provolone, avocado and a bit of sirracha.

I like to have different things for breakfast, but my go-to lately is oatmeal with cashew milk and some kind of frozen fruit (usually blueberries) and topped with chopped pecans.

Reply

Last night I made Grilled Chicken Souvlaki. The recipe I used was from America’s Test Kitchen. Part of the recipe has the Tzatziki sauce, but I used the pre-made Trader Joe’s one. I also added Feta cheese. IT WAS AMAZING! I can’t wait for the left overs. Tonight I am finally trying your Sweet potato BBQ chicken thing. Found a recipe that has goat cheese and chives added. So ready for dinner and it is only 3:40 in Ohio.

I have the same thing every morning during the week. A protein shake, with coconut cream, and a shot of espresso. The protein powder I have is low carb and I add extra fat from the coconut cream. Super tasty. When it is cold out I stick to buttered coffee… it may sound gross, but it is very good!

Good job Brooke! I love her mantra! Mine is “smell the barn” because I grew up with friends that had horses and they always ran faster when they could smell the barn when we heading home. I start repeating it as I get closer to the finish line but I might use Brooke’s mantra too.

Reply

Brooke is the best!!! She’s hardcore ;)

Reply

Pumpkins!!

Reply

My go-to’s are very simple and come to mind every time I run #1. You got this #2. Just get through this. Works almost every time! haha

Reply

Thanks for telling us about Laird park! I took my girls there last week for my daughter’s first birthday. They loved it!
I usually buy their clothes at target, but I’ve really been loving Old Navy lately. Plus it’s nice that my 3 year old can color while I shop.

Reply

Totally used that today. Both “my legs are not tired” and “almost there” :)

Reply

-I got 80% of my daughters clothes from a second hand store that is (I believe) only in the Midwest called Once upon a child. It’s fabulous, they take only really great gently used clothes at a reasonable price!
-I believe I can!
-Dinner was GF shell pasta and Alfredo sauce. (good..not great)
-Pretty much the same things, I go between bagels and oatmeal, I need something to keep me full until at least 10am.
