I remember alot from grade school. Well, alot of random, completely useless things, but before that I don’t remember much of anything. My SIL married my brother when I was 15 and they started dating when I was 11 (I think?) so she’s been part of my family forever too!

I remember things from when I was 3 hitch is pretty unusual I guess. They aren’t really big things. I think my first memory is getting my play kitchen for Christmas and my dad putting it together for me. That same Christmas I got a doll that cried. And that was when I was 3. There are some other things like that that I remember. Just small snippets of things.

Reply

Frosting ratio for me is one to one. My earliest memory was being one and trying to vacuum. It’s a miracle I decided to grow up if that was my childhood memory…

Reply

Man, I really wish I couldn’t remember most of junior high! Ha ha! Such awkward years. We have a tonne of beautiful places to hike here. There’s the infamous Grouse Grind, which isn’t so much beautiful as it is just a grueling workout, but it’s well-known.

One of my earliest memories is of coming home from the ER/Urgent Care at 18 months old after cracking my head open – I just remember the car ride!
I think the frosting to cake ratio depends on the sweetness of the frosting – if it is sweet but not too thick, then 1:1 – otherwise, it should be a cake:frosting ratio of 4:1 :)
I love hiking, but I don’t go that often :(
SOTD: Humidity makes running hard ;)

Reply

I’m so so glad you’re feeling better Janae. I totally related with your post yesterday. My emotions affect my running tremendously too. Glad to hear you’re feeling more like yourself now.

One of my earliest memories was sitting in the dog house with our two Newfoundlands. I think I was about 4. I don’t remember ANYTHING about our first house except for the doghouse. Talk about kid-priorities!

Sentence for the day: I can’t wait to get outside!! It’s only in the 70s here this week and it’s amazing!!

Reply

I would say that a 50/50 frosting to cake ratio would be ideal. But I am obsessed with frosting and can’t ever get enough. ☺

Hiking is one of my favorite summer activities. I have been doing a lot of hiking during my pregnancy because it feels good and gets me outside. We have countless hikes around Central Oregon, so I’ve discovered a lot of new trails that I can’t wait to run (when I am back running hard/long again).

Sentence for the day: Getting together with friends I haven’t seen in years!!!

Reply

I have some memories from ages 5 and up….but most of them are not kind of traumatic. Like being picked on in kindergarten/first grade, having the chicken pox, cracking my head open at the age of 7….lol. I swear I have good memories too!

That ratio of cake to frosting seems about right! I could seriously just eat frosting with a spoon.

Love hiking but don’t get to go very often. Hoping to put an end to that later this month when we go camping.

Hi Janae! I love your blog!! I read it every day :) I’ve been admiring that shirt you are wearing in the picture with your brother – the one with the floral sleeves. Where’s it from??

Reply

Hi Janae!

First, you have the cutest daughter!! I read your blog all the time and I can’t get over how precious (and how big she is getting) she is!

Second, I have a seemingly silly question, but one I am perpetually stumped on. I am pre-training for my fifth marathon right now, and of course as I build milage I am hungrier and hungrier. No surprise there :) I was wondering though, what a typical day of food looks like for you. I know you love salads as much as I do, but I mostly struggle with snacking throughout the day and at night not as much with my major meals. I want to get my weight down for this race in a healthy way, so any and all advice would be so helpful!

Thanks!! Hope you had a great run today. The humidity made me cut my morning run to 5.5 today, so I am hoping for a cool front on the East Coast soon!

Reply

I leave on SUNDAY to apartment hunt in Seattle (I currently live in DC) and I am feeling a litttttttle anxious so I basically just run my anxiety away every morning which is why running saves my life every morning. Basically.

Reply

One of my earliest memories was sitting on my Grandmas lap after going to the doctor for an ear infection. She whispered in my ear to make it better. A few days later she passed away. I was only 5. My Mom took it really hard and my parents had to send me to live with my aunt for a few weeks.

Reply

I remember one incident when I was 2 and lots from 3 and older.

Saw podiatrist this morning and my toe is not healing properly. He is going to have to pull the screw which was put in in December. Another surgery, sigh.

Reply

I prefer a higher frosting-to-cake ratio … :)

Reply

I feel like I can remember almost everything about my life…before school, elementary, junior high, etc…however, I swear I have NO short-term memory! For example…my husband can tell me to “text him when I get home” and, in the time it takes me to drive there, I will completely forget and I can’t EVER remember to grab my lunch out of the fridge if I make it the night before!

Reply

Beautiful!
O goodness, I love Brooke’s romper! I want it! Haha!

Reply

I’m with you in thinking that the more frosting the better on cupcakes! It’s my favorite part!

I love your skirt outfit that you wore for the hike, but I’ll have to agree that it was maybe not the best choice for that outing! When I hike, I usually like to get in a few miles with a decent, but not too crazy, incline so that I feel like I’m getting a good workout in!

Reply

Your nephew is so cute!! I can’t get over it! Good luck with your run!!

Reply

That hike looks beautiful, as does that salad. Just sayin #skillzzz I love hiking. I wish I could do it more. I plan on doing it more when felicity is a tad older. Right now with naps and all that jazz it feels hard to go on such adventures. My kids love it too though.

Your nephew is so handsome. You should whisper to him every day ‘you are going to marry Felicity’. Plant the subliminal messages. We could be family. Think about it.

I hope your run is a 1,000x better today!

Reply

Oh and I have lots of memories of of elementary school and even earlier. I am sure that doesn’t surprise you at all though ;) However, I don’t think I can always remember what I was wearing that far back. Only some of the time. Ha!

Reply

I think hiking is incredible cross-training….I’m surrounded by mountains and spend as much time hiking as I do running (at least on the weekends). If you’re ever considering getting into trail running (race-wise), hiking is a critical component of training….I cannot tell you how many fast runners are terribly slow hikers or burn out on long climbs…it’s a whole different set of muscle groups that are worked. I’m an OK runner but a fast hiker and this has allowed me to place in the top 5 in the last several ultras that I’ve done.

Reply

Almost identical! Everything from before junior high was kind of a blur to me too, but I do remember lots of things from 4th to 6th grade because I had such a cool clique! :))

Reply

I mean, I remember snippets of our first house in Boston, back when I was between 0-4 or 5. Nothing big, mostly just falling down the stairs. actually, I remember one time falling down the stairs, and one i “remember” falling down the stairs because its a family story that comes up a lot. (I was about to fall down the stairs and my sister grabbed my arm, and thus pulled it out of the socket. we went to the ER, doctor just popped it back in!)

Proper frosting to cupcake is changed when I can make a cupcake sandwich. (google it. it’s the only way to eat cupcakes.)

I hike a LOT. My boyfriend and I have an adventure pass, so we go as often as possible to all sorts of mountains.

Reply

I love hiking! But we live in southern Louisiana so you really have to hunt for a good hilly hike. We did 7 miles last Saturday!

While I’m baking, the ratio is 0:1. I just eat frosting with a spoon! But once the cupcakes are out of the oven, I like a 2:1. More cake (as long as it’s nice and fluffy)!

Reply

My earliest memory is from the day my baby brother was born (I was 4). My dad brought my big sis and I to the hospital and when we figured out what was going down we both proceeded to get violently ill. We threw up all over the hospital, in the car on the way home and all day. Pretty sure that was jealousy flu.

Love your family get together!! How fun! And that pic of your nephew is ADORABLE!! He loves his Auntie!

Reply

I would love to hike but since moving to a city that makes it a little harder. At least I have a giant lake!

Reply

I remember elementary school–especially my first-grade teacher because I was deathly scared of her and thought she was a witch. (Somewhat ironic that I ended up becoming a teacher.)

I currently live in a flat-suburb of Chicago.. but am moving to Seattle tomorrow: bring on the hiking! That waterfall looks gorgeous.

Frosting/cake ratio: 100 to 1… I just need a tiny taste of the cake and a vat of frosting. :) I’ll definitely be trying some treats in WA when I get there.

Reply

My earliest memory is from when I knocked my two front teeth out when I was three years old… Nothing like something painful to help you remember!

I agree, a 1:1 frosting to cake ratio is perfect to me. I don’t understand the people that prefer the cake with no frosting.

LOVE to hike, but don’t have many places around Chicago! Hoping to make a trip to the mountains with my Brookie soon!!

Reply

I love hiking and backpacking. I’ve only had one short hike so far this season but have a longer one planned next weekend. Looking forward to it!

Reply

Not sure why it posted my other response twice. Hmmm. What I originally wanted to respond was… I’m one of those people who scrapes the frosting off and eats the cake beneath. Weird, I know. I’ve endured stares at parties

Reply

I feel like I can remember things that happened at around 7-8 but not much younger! Having said that, I’ll watch a home video of me at like 5 and feel like I remember doing those things or that specific day out and I’ll suddenly remember every detail!

Your nephew is just the cutest!! I like more cake than frosting, I can’t stand too much frosting, it makes me feel sick but I can eat huge amounts of cake ;)

Reply

I love hiking and backpacking. I’ve only had one short hike this season but have a longer one planned next weekend. Looking forward to it!

Reply

I love hiking! I try and hike the Y in Provo every year. It helps me determine my fitness level.

I really like that running picture of you. You just seem so happy. :)

Reply

I don’t remember much before 3rd grade and even those third grade memories are pretty few and hazy.

I’m not really a huge frosting person so the less the better. The only exception is the frosting for German chocolate cake, that sugary coconut pecan frosting is amazing.

I love hiking but I hardly ever go. Maybe once a year. I really should make an effort to go more often. Last time I went was Memorial weekend in Harriman State Park (NY).

My sentence for the day is: Yay kickball! (My office is leaving early for a group outing to play some kickball – it’s going to be a disaster!)

Reply

I can remember bits and pieces of things from about 5 years old and on……..but the full memories aren’t there……….I think seeing old photos helps me remember things better. Even though I work with birds everyday at work, I have a slight fear of being bitten or chased by a goose. Although I don’t remember this, my mom says I was bitten by a goose on my great uncle’s farm when I was around 2………….evidently I punched it after it bit me. Ha!

I like icing from the jar better than the sugary stuff from the bakery, so the ratio depends on the type of icing.

I like hiking, but I hear so many stories of people falling, bears showing up, and snakes that I usually freak myself out and want the hike to hurry up!

And hopefully I get to run today………….it is miserably hot though, and I am thinking a long bike ride might be a smarter alternative.

Reply

-I remember my dad taking my sister and I to the zoo, I was 4 and my sister was 7.

-I’ve never gone hiking

I have vivid memories from kindergarten – my teacher and being in the classroom, my Dad making oatmeal for me in the morning…
Love to hike. LOVE.
Tons of frosting. All the frosting – but I am partial to buttercream!
Best part of my day: ditching the crutches and getting to WALK!! Hooray! I also got cleared to swim, aqua jog and continue to bike!! Treadmill running in 6 weeks – yes!!
I am feeling healthy and blessed today. I will never take running for granted.

Reply

I think my perfect frosting to cupcake ratio is more like 4:1. Or…. I could do just frosting and still be content.

Looks like such a fun day with family!

I think, every single blogpost, Brooke will always be better dressed than me.

And, I’m actually okay with that. Let that beautiful little one rock her adorable outfits, Aaryn!

You are such a rad mama, Janae :) I love reading about all your adventures.

Reply

I LOVE cake/frosting. It’s my absolute favorite treat so my perfect ratio is the corner piece of a sheet cake because then you get way too much frosting – my favorite :)

Reply

it’s crazy how much I recall from childhood…probably 3-4 years old. mostly good times with Mima and PapPap :)
4:1 frosting:cake. or more.
