I think we figured it out…

Happy Thursday everyone!  I hope your day is off to a great start.  We are pretty happy over here because I think I we figured out how to help my feet out.  Running pain-free Janae = a very happy Janae and Brooke.

IMG 4795

Last week when my feet started hurting I ordered a new pair of running shoes in hopes that they would help.  I decided I needed something with a little bit more arch support and stability.  They arrived at my parents’ house yesterday and my mom brought them right over.  I slipped the PureCadence (ideal for mild pronation which I think I need!) on and they felt great.

IMG 2454

At around the same time I received an email from a reader with the title, ‘Foot for Thought.’

I notice your footwear during the day (again, you’ve probably thought this or been advised so just bear with me and let me do my mama bear thing for you for a teensy bit).  When I wear sandals/birkenstock types or certain flip flops my foot goes all sorts of crazy.  I am amazed at how one day can rock my foot to pain.  So, I am just wondering if a few days of wearing cushier shoes would help? “

She nailed it.  During the summer all I wear are flip flops, Birkenstocks and sandals with ZERO support or cushioning.   Of course my feet are going to hurt after doing a ton of hard workouts (hill work especially) when I throw on a pair of flip flops and wear those around for the rest of the day.  A lot of times when something is hurting I just focus on what is causing the problem right before, during and right after my run… I forget that the entire rest of the day affects my body/running/injuries too.

What I’m going to do now—>  wear supportive shoes throughout the day.  I think I am going to play around a bit with arch support in my shoes during my runs too.

IMG 4785

These are the type of shoes that I wear each day during the summer.  No cushioning + no support + wearing them all day long after hard runs/easy runs/long runs—>  sad feet.

I am really hoping this is what is causing the problems because it is an easy fix.  So far, so good.  Things are already feeling better.

IMG 2456

Things felt good enough to get in a three mile run at the track while Brooke went around on her scooter.  3 miles @ 8:12 pace.  Slowly but surely I’ll get back to where I was a few weeks ago.

IMG 4836

Did some sit-ups, push-ups and planks before we hit the road.  I’m very grateful that Brooke likes to be at the track as much as I do.

IMG 4827

Let’s rewind to last night for a bit.

I had a date to Oteo which is definitely one of my top 3 favorite restaurants in all of Utah.  We started off with tortillas dipped into queso and then I had the avocado and beef tacos.  The flavors in each bite—>  perfection.

IMG 4787

For dessert we had one of their kronuts which is a must if you go to Oteo.  PS if you are wondering why I suddenly have a good food pic on my blog it is because I got this one off of the internet… it isn’t mine but this is a picture of what the kronut looks like.

NewImage

After dinner we hit up the bowling alley.  I got over 100 in both games.  That has never happened in my life.  Maybe I need to zone in more on my bowling skills.

IMG 4789

Kate is looking awesome in her Hungry Runner Girl Shirt!!! She is going to rock her first marathon and I want her dog.

IMG 4786

Also, who has been following along with the Alberto allegations??  Thoughts???

A bit more support really can work wonders, and yup, I had to learn that the hard way! I now wear pretty supportive shoes all the time, not just while running.

Reply

Good to know I’m not alone:) What type of shoes do you wear when you aren’t running?

Reply

I used to wear flip flops all the time. My feet ached so bad that I switched to wearing mainly Sperrys when I’m not running. So worth it – they’re supportive, cute, cushioned and there are tons of color options to choose from!

Reply

I’m a total New Balance girl due to my arches. They work best for me! I think it’s so funny (and annoying and hit-myself-in-the-face-frustrating) when we realize that our non-running activities contribute to running woes! Like I’ve heard, we’re always 100% for our workout, but it’s the next 23 hours that supplement!

PS talk about lack of support/cushioning in BOWLING SHOES! Haha, thank goodness those are for like 5 steps to throw a ball and not everyday footwear :)

Reply

hahaha I totally did the hit-myself-in-the-face-frustrating when I realized my daily shoes were probably to blame!!! Funny you mentioned the bowling shoes because I was really stressing out about them but you are right, I probably walked a total of 30 steps in them:) Have an awesome day!

Hi Janae!,
So random but I have been admiring the flowery tank from Brooks on your blog and online…wondering if you feel it runs true to size. I am a “smedium” much of the time and don’t want it to be swimming on me.

Happy running! Thank for writing :)

Reply

Hey Ariana! I seriously LOVE this tank (as you can tell I wear it as much as possible ha). I would probably go for a small if you are normally a smedium:) It is pretty loose so a small would probably work great!

Oh wow I hadn’t considered flip flops playing a part. Last week I was at the beach all week and got a really sore foot. I am currently waiting for X Ray results (so hoping it’s not a fracture!) but now I’m wondering too much beach time is to blame. I’ll be wearing running shoes all of the time until this is better!!

Reply

AHHHH oh no!! Please keep me updated on the results. I actually have a friend (that doesn’t run) that got a stress fracture last summer from only wearing flip flops all of the time. I am hoping for the absolute best for you! Please let me know!

Reply

Oh no that’s rubbish! Results tomorrow hopefully. In the mean time you might inspire me to take up pool running!

Reply

Email me with your results! Also, I am hoping you won’t need to pool run because your feet are okay but if you do let me know if you have any questions!

I had never thought about flip flop trouble but it makes sense.
I’m currently running in the saucony kinvara but the newest model doesn’t work for me.
Fave restaurant dessert: carrot cake from j Alexander’s!
I had a great group run with our breakfast club!!

I work for an oilfield company in South Texas out in the warehouse buildings. With work I have to wear closed toed shoes and I noticed if I wear my boots more, then my shin splints flare up because I need more arch support. I started wearing my other non-running shoes to work and I have seen a difference.

I am rocking the Asics Gel Cumulos 16 but saving up for the 17’s

And I didn’t get my run in this morning because a drunk ran into a pole and we lost power for almost three hours this morning and I wasn’t sure the gym had power so I am hitting the treadmill after work.

Reply

I hope the shoe change helps out! Once winter ends, I pretty much live in sandals too, but I have to switch them up every now and then or my feet get really sore from walking around in them so much.

Reply

I noticed along time ago my feet were just to sore and felt weak if I wore flip flops especially after along run. I found a pair of Skechers flip flops that have a lot of foam under them and they are perfect.

Reply

I *definitely* experienced foot issues when I wore flip-flops, esp at the beginning of the summer when my feet hadn’t built up the right muscles to be able to keep good alignment in zero-support shoes. My feet supponate rather than pronate, and for some reason flip-flops and flats really exacerbate the issue. I actually find that a low wedge or even platform sandal helps keep my feet in better alignment in the summer than flats, when supportive shoes aren’t an option (like at work).

Reply

What I wear when I’m not running totally affects how my feet feel when running too. I got rid of all my non-supportive shoes and I only wear supportive ones now. I am like an old lady buying aerosoles and other types of super comfortable and supportive shoes, but it’s worth it. Especially as I realize how I treat my foot affects my entire leg and happy feet = fewer injuries!

Reply

i love clarks sandals and have thrown out (so i wont be tempted to wear them) ALL shoes with no backs. my sister got serious foot issues with flip flops.

clarks has super cute styles and i also like the ones where if you took a picture of just my feet you would think i was 80 years old. no joke and i dont care! sore feet are the worst.

hope you do in fact figure it out!!! i know the pain and it stinks!

Reply

Thank you so much Amanda! I will totally have to look into Clarks sandals. THANK YOU for sharing!

Reply

I’ve been reading some shady things about that Alberto!

My friend has been having some calf pain lately, and all she wears (when she’s not running) is flat, unsupportive shoes. She’s also stopped wearing her orthodics, so she thinks these are both to blame. Hope wearing more supportive shoes helps!

Reply

Yay for your feet feeling better!! That kroughnut looks amazing!

Reply

That’s such a great suggestion and I hope that it helps you out! I actually got rid of all of my flip flops and no-support shoes when I started running after college. There are lots of sandals and summery shoes out there now that offer great support. Wishing you all the best and hope that your foot is back to normal soon!

Reply

I love my PureCadence! Hopefully they work for you. :)

Reply

Currently rocking a few different pairs but mostly Launch 2’s & Glycerin 12’s. I absolutely LOVE the Launch’s and buying another pair next week for my bday :)

I didn’t get out there this am so I’m hoping to have a good run this afternoon!

Reply

I’m glad to hear you figured out and fixed the problem. Those bowling shoes don’t have much support though.. ;)

Reply

I’ve never considered how my footwear outside of my runs would affect me, that’s such a good point. I live in flip flops in the summer too, and I wear flats to work – neither have any support. Hopefully your new approach will help your feet feel better!

I wear Nike Free’s, currently in the 5.0. My running coach said I need to stick with a shoe that has a higher heel-to-toe drop, which Nike has (mine are 8mm). I need to work out some tightness in my calves and ankles and build up my flexibility there before I drop down to a flatter shoe.

5 miles for me today, outside in the heat!

Reply

I can’t ever wear sandals in the summer! A friend recommended Oofos brand sandals, they are not pretty AT ALL but I wear them for quick little things like walking my dog! I think they are a game changer! I was having calf pain and I actually felt less pain wearing those than I did wearing my Adrenalines! I just ordered mine from Amazon.

Reply

I hope you find some cute ones! I’ve noticed that if I walk in flip flops all day my calves hurt too, so I avoid doing that whenever possible. Even my flats have at least a little bit of support or cushion!

Reply

I try to avoid wearing flip flops for sandals except for quick errands because they hurt my feet! I’ve also completely given up on high heels. Supportive flats,, boot, and Sperrys for me. Hopefully better day time shoes helps your feet!

Reply

Wearing shoes with more arch support during the day makes so much sense, but it is definitely something I didn’t even think of!

Reply

This makes a lot of sense. I had many foot issues last year and the doctor said flip flops were a big no no. They’re terrible for your feet and hips. During the day I wear my running shoes or I have a cute pair of Clarks I wear. I alternate between running shoes and regular shoes. I also have inserts I put in my regular shoes when I can’t wear my running shoes.

Reply

I cannot wear cute wedges the night before a long run. My arches and calfs get far too tired and my runs definitely suffer from it. I live in my Nike Pegasus. Enough cushion for me and still relatively light. Kronuts are amazing. Best restaurant dessert are cannoli though. 7 mile easy run today!

Reply

I had the same issue last summer, but fall, winter and spring I was fine. Towards the end of last summer I started paying more attention to the steps tracker in my phone – I was walking a solid 5-7 miles each day in flip flops or flats (I live in the city so the mileage I walk is on the higher side).

I have switched to wearing Chucks to and from the office and when I run errands. They might not be the most supportive sneaker but I haven’t had any foot issues since. And at least they’re cute!

Reply

I love flip flops, but I try not to wear them too often because of lack of support. It’s hard when it’s so hot outside, though!

I’m loving the Saucony Kinvaras–they are perfect for me!

I can eat sugar cookies all day. Seriously. Potbelly has great ones!

Reply

I have terribly sensitive feet too. I wear either adrenalines or transcends to run and Danskos during the week because I work in an operating room. I found these flip flops called fit flops…they’re supposed to help tone your legs somehow, which I totally don’t buy. But they are incredibly supportive and they don’t leave blisters, even if your skin is extra sensitive like mine. They’re kind of expensive, but totally worth it!

Reply

I only wear running shoes or Birkenstocks. As much as I love my Birkies I can’t wear them two days in a row without foot pain when I get home.

Reply

If you’re looking for some flip flops with a little support, I’d suggest Rainbows! I have super high arches, and they mold to your feet a bit to create custom support. I love em!

Reply

My running shoes are the only shoes in my closet with any support at all! I should probably do something about that. Right now I’m running in the New Balance W890V4 but the PureCadence is my favorite shoe of all time and I’ll be going back to it when it’s time for a new pair in August!

Reply

I love your blog but have never commented :)
I am pregnant and my feet were killing this summer me from the extra weight and also not wearing very supportive shoes! My friend had these shoes she called “yoga sandals” and I had to try them. They are lifesavers! The brand is Sanuk and I ordered them through Dicks because I had a coupon but on the Sanuk website there are tons of color options! Hope this helps!

Reply

Have you looked at rainbow flip flops? They form to your feet and have awesome arch support…I can walk miles and miles in mine no problem. Worth a try if you want to wear sandals. They’re not the cheapest option but last forever – I’ve had my pair 4+ years. http://www.amazon.com/Rainbow-Basic-Leather-Sandals-Sierra/dp/B000JE1344/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1437076829&sr=8-6&keywords=rainbow+sandals

Reply

I’m the same way with sandals. I just got over a foot problem because I was wearing my flip flops too much. I have to have support! I have a pair of Teva sandals that help a lot. But mostly I live in running shoes!

Reply

I second the recommendation of Clarks sandals/shoes….Since having two foot surgeries and lots of other foot troubles, they are pretty much all I wear. I love my Clark’s boots in the winter, too :)

Have you tried an orthotic like Superfeet? I had to miss my first marathon due to posterior tibial tendonitis, which my ortho. thinks was caused by too little arch support. Since then I switch between Brooks Pure Cadence & Ravenna’s (I read that varying your running shoes is helpful, esp. switching between diff. heel stack heights) and ALWAYS use my Berry Superfeet in both….The spot just below my ankle and into my arch starts hurting as soon as I try running without them, so I’m definitely a huge fan. Good luck!

Reply

Do your feet have more problems during the summer months due to wearing sandals/flip-flops?!
YES! that was exactly my problem in high school. Mine had more to do with having the wrong running shoe with not enough support in it. But once I got new running shoes and started wearing them and stopped wearing flip flops everywhere, I was healed.

What running shoes are you currently wearing? Are you loving them?
I have always run in Mizuno wave riders (ever since the above story). But I’m thinking of trying Brookes next time because I’ve heard a lot of Mizuno lovers love Brookes too.

How was your run today?
Haven’t gone yet. But 12 miles today. Yikes, it’s been a long time since I’ve gotten even close to that far. Wish me luck!

Reply

That makes sense, and I hope that wearing some better shoes can eliminate your problems! I actually notice that certain winter boots give me foot problems. I wear rainbow sandals all summer and I find them really comfortable. I also love wearing Sperrys anytime I feel like my feet need a little more support. The first running injury I ever had was plantar fasciitis and it was back when I wore cheap old nay flip flops every day.
While the pure flows are my favorite running shoe, I love wearing the pure cadence for longer runs and whenever my mileage is higher!

Reply

I blame my two worst running injuries on footwear! Two years ago I strained a tendon on the outside of my foot that sidelined me for 6 weeks — I pretty sure it was caused by spending too much time in ballet flats. This year I had a stress fracture near my inside ankle bone that I think was caused by too much standing and walking in high heels. So now I am super careful about my non-running footwear, at least when I know I’ll be doing a lot of standing or walking. It absolutely makes a difference! Clark’s makes supportive and somewhat stylish flip flops that don’t bother my feet.

Reply

I totally get this! I am super particular about what shoes I wear – totally flat shoe beds with no support just don’t work for me. But before you give up on flip flops altogether….you should try these! https://www.olukai.com/shop/womens/sandals/paniolo-plumeria They are so supportive and comfortable! I wear mine all the time!

Reply

I wear the Nike fit flop flips flops. They give a little bit more cushion which does make a bit of a difference for me, especially after a run!

Reply

we are on the same wavelength – i just got a pair of Dr. Scholls sandals and my feet are much happier!

Reply

Actually, genuine Birkenstocks provide quite a bit of support and are recommended by many foot doctors. The firm cork sole molds to your foot over time for a somewhat custom fit. They are great for those who suffer from plantar fasciitis. Of course, your doctor can provide you with the best footwear recommendation based on your anatomy and injury type. But when you lump plastic flip flops and Birks into the same category, you are comparing apples to oranges. My flip flop recommendation is Chaco. Chaos have a firm sole with good arch support. I wear mine everywhere!

Reply

I love Chacos too! And while I wore birkis for years, they have started hurting my arches. I think it’s because they don’t have a back. Maybe I should go back to a pair with back straps?

Reply

I have been wearing Birks for 20 years and have run 19 marathons. Never had a foot injury from my Birks! I am a teacher on my feet all day too and wear Birks from March-November!

Reply

Yes!!! I love my Birks to death. I just got a pair of Chaco flip flops so I could have a supportive sandal that I don’t mind getting wet, and I am loving them :)

Reply

Yes, yes, YES to Chacos!!!! I had wonky foot pain during the beginning of the summer due to wearing more non supportive flip-flops and going barefoot at the pool. I invested in some Chacos and new running shoes and bye-bye foot pain! You should definitely check out Chacos!!!

Reply

Totally agree! My foot doctor recommends Birkenstocks or Naot brand sandals. I have a pair for outdoors in the summer and a pair for year round for in the house when I am on my feet cooking/cleaning/ entertaining. I generally avoid prolonged periods in shoes like Toms or flip flops that don’t have an arch support.

Reply

Long time no comment but still reading your blog daily :). I wanted to throw my support for the genuine Birkies. I live in my Gizehs in Summer and find they have great arch support. Good luck with the feet problems. I’m studying nursing and I think we’re all obsessed with what shoes to wear :).

Reply

That dessert looks SO good!

I wear flip flops year round (hello, Florida) and I can totally notice pains in my feet after a few hours.

Reply

I need to know what kinda socks you like to wear. I’m running often (aka not errday) and I’m starting to get a blister in between my TOES. UGH. PAIN.

Reply

Check out http://www.chaco.com

I absolutely LIVE in Chaco sandals in the summer. They are supportive and cushy. Love, love, love them :)

Reply

Chaco’s are seriously the best! I gave up flip flops for chaco’s and in Florida they are the best option by far!

Reply

Hey, I know I’m like comment # one million here but I found the link to the pic I posted on my blog of my weird foot problem. Nobody really knows what it is. It doesn’t hurt unless it slips out of place, like there’s a joint in there or something. But otherwise, it’s always this big bump on top of my foot. I had an MRI done on it and everything (when it first happened after Boston 2010) and there’s nothing that comes up. K, here it is: http://suzyhastheruns.com/mileage-monday-25/

Reply

Oh man. I hope this is the problem/answer and that it helps. When I had plantar faciaitis (like 9 years ago) they told me no sandals and flip flops. It really does make a difference. Not just the no support thing, but you tend to use your ties to grip the shoes to keep them on your feet and that isn’t great for your feet/arches.

I need that dessert right now.

No run today. But I diD get to run another mile yesterday with the wonderful metronome ap again. Hey, a run is a run and I will take any run I can get.

Reply

I see that a zillion people have made suggestions for supportive summer shoes, and I’m no different. I have bad feet that really need support and I rock some vionic flip flops. They’re the bomb. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_ex_n_2?rh=n%3A7141123011%2Cn%3A7147440011%2Cn%3A679337011%2Ck%3Avionic&bbn=7147440011&keywords=vionic&ie=UTF8&qid=1437079970
I’ve worn them all summer and have had none of my typical summertime issues. Good luck to you!

Reply

WOW. This is so familiar. The first time I experienced pain on the side of my foot was when I wasn’t running. It was a sharp pain but after wearing cushioned stability runners for a month (the less glamorous moments of my life) it went away. Then, it came back. To make a long story short, I got specially made orthotics (I’m a natural pronator) for walking. The fatigue my feet were feeling after running was requiring me to provide them with support throughout the day (flats cannot do this)…but I definitely didn’t want to wear runners for the rest of my life. Orthotics mean I can wear just about anything. Just something to think about, if this is indeed your problem ;)

Reply

I’ve injured my knee at the moment so just cross training for me.
Glad your foot injury is getting solved.
Also I was wondering if your shirts run true to size?

Reply

I am loving Brooks Ghost for my longer runs. I stick with my Pure Flows for speed work.

Is that a beet on your taco? Did you eat it?

Reply

Ha ha ha… your question made me laugh. I was totally wondering the same thing.

Reply

I too had to learn to start wearing more supportive shoes but for my back. I run and then I’m on my feet a lot during the day. I found some good flip flops Olukai that give good support and aren’t ugly. I have been able to find some pretty cute shoes that still give me nice cushy support.

Reply

My feet don’t love flips flops or many flats, except the hour or so after a long hot run. They also don’t love to be barefoot on wood floors or sand. I have switched to slides instead of flip flops and that seems to have helped A LOT. My go to sandals are Dansko or Keens.

I run in Asics GT 2000 and I don’t love them, but there aren’t many options over here in Germany and many brands have a few styles only made in Europe which is frustrating.

My run was super sunny and hot-two elements I don’t thoroughly enjoy or embrace. As an added bonus it was hilly, hilly, hilly. However, it was followed up with several hours of pool time.

So glad your feet are doing better and I’m totally honored by this post. Thanks for letting me get all mama bear on you.

Reply

So glad you’ve found the probably culprit for your foot issues! Have you tried Chacos for summer sandal wear? They’re certainly not dainty, but they are sporty, have excellent built-in arch support, and feel great! I hike in them and wear them every day April-October. They leave my feet happy and healthy for running. Just sayin :-)

Reply

I’m probably late to the party here but I started suspected flip flops as a problem for my feet years ago and then I saw articles such as this one:
http://www.webmd.com/beauty/style/flip-flops-fun-but-not-great-for-feet
That’s when it all clicked for me.
Flip Flops are bad for your feet! Period.

Reply

I never wear flip flops or sandals anymore. I have had some foot problems from running also, and a few trip to the podiatrist. I have really thrown any regard for fashion out the window :) I wear Sperrys almost every day to work, and any other time I’m in tennis shoes. I like the Sketchers “Go Walk” shoes too. They can be worn with dressier clothes and still look nice. Even though my co-workers might make fun of me sometimes ;)

Reply

My feet definitely take a beating during the summer months. I wear a lot of unsupported flats and flipflops without even thinking about the consequences. I also notice that these types of shoes tend to hurt my lower back as well. The things we do to look cute… right?

I bought the new Glycerin a while back and have been wearing them recently on my runs. LOVE them. They make running/walking during pregnancy more comfortable.

I did a 3-mile wog today and it was pretty slow going. Being 8 months pregnant, I’m not sure how much longer I will be running for…

Reply

If you still want to wear sandals (It is summer, who doesnt?!) try out a pair of Chacos. They have amazing arch support and come in a variety of styles and colors! They are a little expensive but will last forever. My first pair lasted for 5 years. The first few days in them might be a little uncomfortable if you arent used to so much support but after a while they form to your foot and you will never want to take them off. When I traveled throughout Europe last year these are pretty much all I wore when walking for miles around different cities and surfaces (cobblestone, rivers, grass, cement…)

Reply

Teva sandals are amazing!

Reply

Smart reader of yours ;) but this totally happens to me.!! especially f you walk around a lot (in non cushiony shoes) wow the arches start to hurt, and fast.!! it really does a number on your feet.
Hopefully that will fix it all up :)

and yessssss I’ve totally been following the Alberto Salazar allegations. I hope that’s all they are.!! I’ve loved Galen Rupp for years, and really all of the NOP, especially being from Oregon, they’ve been the running team that idolize.

JANAEEEE! glad you’re figuring out your foot problem issues. and I LOVE your new purecadence- sooo pretty! i just got these sandals – OOFOS recently (they tried to sell me on them at the Boston expo- but I ended up buying them when I got back). They are specifically for runners/recovering feet and I’m obsessed with them. You should give them a try – they aren’t the sexiest- but your feet feel amazing in them (it’s supposed to stretch out your feet- and they like melt into them- especially after a long run).

ps you should come to kara’s podium retreat at the end of october- I think I’m going to both of her retreats this fall. it would be amazing to have you out there too. ;-)

Wow. I’m totally smacking my forehead right now. I’ve been having foot issues for about 2 months. I went on vacation in the mountains and my foot got better! I got back and my other foot started hurting. Ugh! I’ve been trying to figure out how my foot got better after running and hiking on it. The answer has to be the shoes! I didn’t wear my sandals much at all on vacation. Thank you so much! I hope this solves our foot issues.

Reply

I just bought a pair of Okulai Ohanas – They are pricey but come with many great reviews especially about arch support. Birks hurt my feet! They are just to stiff!

Reply

So glad your foot is better! I just started running in the Gel Quantum 360’s from Asics. The gel cushioning feels amazing, it’s been great for building speed and mileage. You are rocking those PureCadence shoes!

Reply

Hi Janae – I read a lot of great posts and have tried many of the recommendations. However, I can only wear Olukai Flip Flops – they are kinda’ pricey but have excellent arch support and you can buy them at Nordstrom or the Walking Store. Otherwise, it’s Dansko sandals only – because of the arch support. Again, quite pricey but then I never get sore feet… Also, waking up each morning + doing self massage by rolling each foot on a golf ball is a good idea. Lastly, I found some great inserts for my running shoes, they are only half inserts called ProFoot for Plantar Fascitis, which I do not have – they just help support my arches. I use it with a Spenco insert so my toes don’t hurt… Good luck with your feet!

Reply

I’m so sorry to hear about your foot woes!! I had the EXACT same pain when I starte marathon reason for two reason: I switched from Mizuno’s to brooks pure flow, and started running more miles and lots of hills. I went to local running store who gave me really tailored inserts. I also just switched back to Mizuno 18’s for all my running ,and just use the pureflows for errands etc.

You NEED this to massage the bottom of your feet, it’s the BEST!

Also, for walking around, I got the top-sider Sperry’s with memory foam. They are AMAZING. True to size. the best.

Hope your foot gets better soon!

Nicole

Funnnnnnnny story. I just spent 3 days walking around in flip flops in Seattle, apartment hunting, and now my calf muscles are tight and irritating my left foot. I think we are the same person? Heating and foam rolling as we speak. Come on little feet, I love you, I’ll never flip flop you around town again.

GOOD LUCK!

Reply

Does your local running store carry Oofos? I bought a pair for this exact reason. They aren’t pretty but they are great post run shoes if you’r just hanging out, like little foam mats strapped to your feet.

Reply

If you like Birkenstock, you can try the ones with the “soft footbed”.
They are more expensive but I chose them for that same reason.
I no longer worry about wearing “nice shoes” but only about comfort and support.
Another thing that you can do is stretch your foot after your run. Those stretches next to a wall ( I’m sure you have done them) stretch the calf and the foot.
Good luck!
Ps. I think you are amazing and I have been following your blog forever…(even before you had Brook)

I love love LOVE Pure Cadence!!! They have been my fave shoe for years. I really hope you like them as much as I do :)

Favorite dessert from a restaurant? Hmmm….do I have to choose just one?! Currently I’d say Oreo dream extreme cheesecake from Cheesecake Factory. Ridiculously good!

That totally makes sense! Before I “really”started running, my feet were never too fussy about shoes. But now, I have just a few pairs I can make it through the work day with, and mostly they are Clarks sandals. My go-to pair have a little cushioning on them.

Right now I’m running in Glycerin 12’s, and am convinced Brooks made them specifically for ME! They are what dreams are made of!

Now that I have been running longer and I’m more “in tune” with how my body feels, I definitely notice a different after wearing Old Navy flip flops all the time!

I typically wear New Balance 1269 v4’s, but I just ordered some Brooks Pureflows. I’m excited to give them a shot!

So crazy! My arches and ankles have really been bugging me lately. I bet this is part of it. Thanks for this post.

SKETCHERS GO WALK! For your everyday casual use :)http://www.skechers.com/style/13980/skechers-gowalk-3/bbk#Color=NVLB They are much cuter than the picture looks and like walking on clouds. I have huge foot issues – as in I just wear sneakers everywhere (yep, don’t care – I’m on my feet all day at work and a pronator).

Please let us know how the Cadence are?? I currently run in Mizuno Inspire 11 but they aren’t cutting it anymore. I’m getting massive quad soreness and not recovering…if anyone has experienced this please let me know.

Someone may have mentioned this already but have you tried Oofos? I’ve heard great things about them & just recently got a pair & they totally live up to the hype! Cushiony & arch support. I’m faithful to Brooks Adrenaline. Love them so much!

I had the same realization in high school when I got foot pain from wearing my penny loafers (Catholic school uniform). I had to get custom inserts because they were not supportive at all and I was suffering during cross country. As much as I love the convenience of flip-flops I try to only wear them when I do minimal walking. Hope the shoe thing is the answer for you!

I find it helpful to rotate different shoes while running too. Not only do you work different muscles in your legs, your feet get stronger too. Right now I have altra torin 2.0, Mizuno wave riders, Brooks ghost, and Mizuno sayanoras.

BRILLIANT. I love this idea. Thank you so much for sharing!

when i do a lot of speedwork and volume especially on hard surfaces I know my plantar fascia gets a little irritated so I try to stick to wearing cushion-y supportive shoes and stay off my feet the rest of the day. Hard working feet deserve a break! Every foot/ankle person will tell you that flip flops are terrible. Danskos (my really old ones I have had since medical school) are actually pretty supportive for those of you who stand around all day. Another thing that helps a ton is doing a lot of heel cord stretching when I wake up (try a few minutes of down dog in the morning!). I also rotate between Asics gel kayanos which help overpronation and Adidas energy boost which is lighter and more cushioned.

I have Nike Memory foam flip-flops from DSW, and they are the best things ever. I recently wore them home, and my mother found them so comfortable that she wore them during dinner… and when I went to leave, I could not find them: because she was still wearing them.

I doubt I have ever really ordered dessert after dinner, but in college once per quarter we always went and got vegan chocolate cake.

Hahaha, I just moved to Seattle, and I passed the Brooks head-quarters and thought of you, but I happen to be an Asics fan.

Brooke in that tiara just made my day!

PS. YOU NEED TO CHECK-OUT MR. ROBOT, the tv-show, on USA. I never watch tv, but it is the absolute best.

I definitely notice when I wear flats or flip-flops for too long my feet hurt. I have standing desk and if I wear certain shoes, my feet hurt after work and a run. I often wear my running shoes that still have quite a few miles in the summer for most of the day and will switch to flip-flops occasionally. Good luck!

I’m running in Altra’s for distance, and then I’ve been using Asics’s for speed work. My Altra’s are a lot lighter than my Asics’s, so it gives me a bit more of workout on speed days.

I had big time foot and leg trouble last summer and I credited it to excessivelY used running shoes and also excessive flip flop wearing. I wore supportive sneakers for about 4 weeks straight and finally got better. Whew! Hope this helps you too!

I definitely have knee pain if I wear sandals for more than just and quick out and about… but its also hard to find cute, supportive shoes!

The Mizuno Wave Inspires are my running shoe of choice right now.

After suffering and having surgery for Plantar Fasciitis I have an entirely different outlook on footwear. I rarely wear flip flop or unsupportive shoes, especially when I’m training. It makes for some pretty wicked tan lines. My feet are very white. But it’s worth it. I also do feet strengthening exercises.

Are those…..beets??
Have you been converted to a beet-lover?

I’m so happy it was a reader able to help you with your foot problems! My late 90 year old grandmother would wear Keds during the summer because she knew sandals would make her feet unsupported, flatter, and wider- she dreaded going from a 7narrow to a regular 7— typing this makes me smile because she was such a diva.

I got my first pair of Brooks shoes in the form of the Pure Cadence about a month ago and I feel like I finally broke them in just right and they feel amazing. What are your thoughts on socks vs. no socks while running? I just moved and all my workout socks have gone wherever it is socks go…

YES I went thru all this foot pain last summer training for my first half (with many many trips to the foot doctor). Most of the time I just wore a pair of my running shoes after my longs runs because my feet were happiest in them; however, working at a bank doesn’t really allow me to rock my running shoes during work hours. Enter Vionic by Orthaheel. These shoes 100% saved my feet. They make the cutest sandals (and other shoes for fall/winter) and I now own several pair. They look cute with all the summer dress I wear to work and I can do double duty and wear them with shorts or ankle pants too. I would highly recommend them – they are podiatrist recommended.

My running shoe of preference is the Asics Gel Nimbus 16 — they are a neutral shoe which allows me to put in an insert of my preference since I do overpronate.
I’ve tried Saucony and Mizunos but nothing compares to the Gel Nimbus.

Good luck with your feet. Happy feet = Happy Runner.

Speaking of dog, weren’t you buying a house? (So you could get a dog…)

Ok…not sure if anyone mentioned this or not….but Dr Shoals makes some amazing inserts for women’s shoes that I have in every pair of non running shoes! Definitely check them out, they add a lot of arch support especially. Also, there are some great recovery flip flops out there….usually running stores have them!

Hi! I was battling tendinitis from over probation combined with wearing flat shoes too much when not running. I got custom orthotics made for my running shoes and wear Dr Schols in most everything else. It’s really helped! Also I still wear flip flops sometimes, but only Rainbows. They are a little pricey but they have decent arch support :)

Hi there. do you have plantar fasciitis? ugh. i had it 15 years ago when my oldest son was a baby and right before a marathon. i am now plagued with it :(:(. was wondering if you had it and if you kept running or totally stopped?

Oh my gosh… please tell me brooke took that picture of you doing situps? I LOVE that she is your new photographer– that is seriously so adorable!!!

After my foot surgery I’ve worn Aerosoles, tennis shoes, and shoes with orthodics (prescription inserts). I try to make it work with whatever I’m wearing, and honestly sometimes I just stay in workout clothes all day so my feet will be comfortable and I won’t look like a dork!

-I don’t wear flip flops because my hips ALWAYS hurt after I wear them, but I do wear flat, more like deck shoes.
-I am currently wearing ON running shoes, I love them!!
– I ran a hill over and over again ( for 40 mins) at our cabin while my daughter fed the fish and made sand castles. Kinda then best thing ever! :)

I’ve had problems with flip flops for years! I usually wear Keens in the summer, I know they aren’t the most stylish but having something on the back of the foot and with a little support seems to help. I’m a teacher and stand all day during the school year and have had foot problems from that too, even with supportive shoes. Hope it gets better for you soon! Definitely annoying.

I prefer to be barefoot so I can wear flip flops, cute flats etc- since I pretty much wear them while driving or walking in a store. I have a desk job and kick my shoes off almost all the time.
I have made the mistake of wearing shoes like that on a busy day of errands etc and always regret it.

Janae,
Even though we are mad at those shoes right now, they are adorable!!! Where are they from??? I feel like they would be good teacher shoes for my summer school classes!
