An important event and running tips you NEED to read.

Our friends filled us in on a very important event that goes down at one of our local froyo joints.  From the hours of 2-4 pm on Thursday afternoons you can fill up one of their cups as much as you want for only $3.99…  normally you pay by the ounce.  I am positive we had a solid $8 of froyo/toppings in there so we were pretty happy about the deal we were getting.  Brooke had the sprinkle half and I had the chocolate half.

Turns out that sprinkles put Brooke in a pretty good mood.

Ten miles in the morning = I snack all day long.

The two best foods that could ever be put together.

We got to hang out with my sister and her family for a while.

My sister’s husband made us an amazing stir-fry at 10:30 pm.  He barely cooks the veggies so they are still super crisp which is my favorite when it comes to a good stir-fry.

Two random things:

1.  Just go ahead and put this on your calendar so that you can make sure to celebrate.

2.  I am beyond excited for the 4th of July with Brookers.

From her 1st and 2nd 4th of July.  I have a feeling her 3rd is going to be the best yet.

My coach sent me over my new favorite running article—>  How to Think Like an Elite Runner.  I have reread it about 20 times now because I love it so much.

“Top runners have a long-term memory for success and a short-term memory for failure.  Every athlete fails, but the most successful ones do not dwell on the failures.  Instead they focus on their positive training and racing experiences and keep confidently moving forward.” —>  Let’s all try this one out.

My other two favorites:

Our minds can really hold us back from reaching our full potential in running (and in every other aspect of our lives;).  Try incorporating some of these tips from the article because our mental training is pretty darn important for our running!!!

Hitting the beach! Nothing beats running on the beach.

Happy 4th of July!

I LOVE the mental aspect of running – especially marathons. I honestly feel like it’s prepared me for childbirth (we’ll find out in a few weeks!)

I’m going to a soccer game for the 4th, and there’s a huge fireworks show after. Also, my friend and I are going paddle boarding in the morning!

I think an important mental tip is to remember that running is not life. At the end of the day, it’s ok if you didn’t hit all of your splits or have the greatest workout or race. It’s great to work toward goals, but there shouldn’t be complete agony if you don’t always hit them.

My mood: hopeful, thankful, spunky.

I like combining Wheat Thins with anything, but right now one of my favorite combos is carrots with hummus. So.good.

Lots of family time for the weekend! And I do believe running is mostly mental and agree with Erica on the childbirth comparison :)

I’m helping ain’t my MILs house this weekend. I know, everyone is jealous of that one. I’m just hoping to be able to watch fireworks on Saturday!

Yupp I’ve always thought running was a mental game.

Two best foods.. oreos and milk. Haha.

Going into Seattle today and to the Cascades for hiking tomorrow!
Mental training is as essential as physical training. As weird as it sounds, I try to smile when I feel discomfort because a smile sends positive messages to the brain that override the feelings of discomfort.
Best food combo: peanut butter and fruit!

The 4th of July is my favorite holiday, so this weekend is going to be busy and fantastic. I’m going to start it out running because, why not? I think I’m going to try to run for an hour and see how far I can go. That’s going to be tough but I can do it. Then a huge breakfast at my grandparents house, swimming at my parents house followed by a bbq. Then we go to the stadium of fire.

I never ever liked guacamole at all. And then I found an amazing recipe for it and now I like it, but only that recipe. So obviously I need to share it:
1 ripe avocado
1/2 tsp salt
Juice of 1 lime
1tsp finely chopped Serrano pepper
1tsp finely chopped onion
Half Roma tomato chopped

Start out by dicing the avacodo and mixing it around with the salt and lime juice. Add pepper and onion and start squishing the avacodo a little bit, you still want it a little chunky. The add the tomato and mix it around.
Hope you like that as much as I did.

I love that: don’t write the review until it’s over!! My mantra is usually “make it worth it.”

Chips + guac is probably my favorite but I do love carrots + peanut butter, too!

I haven’t had time to comment lately but just wanted to say I am really loving your posts lately. It seems like you’ve switching your mentality to think like an elite/runner with high goals/etc. Not that you were never serious! – just that you seem to be zoned in on what you need to do to get that sub-3 one day. And all the stuff you are posting – articles, workouts, tidbits, motivation helps so many of us I’m sure!

The baby boy is looking like your sister!! Happy July 4th to you! Was 10 miles your long-run or pre-long run?

That second paragraph about mental training is my life mantra. I channel that strength that I get from pushing through mental blocks when I’m running over to real life when it feels like too much, when it feels like it’ll never end. Because I know I have it in me on the road, then I know I have it in me all the time.

Pretzels + M&M’s !!

Speaking of sales, Old Navy has some excellent deals on summer clothes right now. In fact, I picked up an outfit for the Fourth for nothing! :) Have a wonderful weekend with your Brookers!

Reply

It’s girl day today, so I’m looking forward to that. Family-time tomorrow, and kind of thinking the beach on Sunday.

And, I’d have to say I love it when carrots and cake combine! ;)

You find the cutest clothes! Where did you find the top in picture#1?
Love it!

I bet it is so fun to watch how Brooke grows and experiences different holidays each year. The 4th of July was always a favorite when I was growing up. There is something so special about fireworks!

My husband and I are celebrating the 4th on Camano Island, north of Seattle. Both of our families are going to be together and we are having a baby shower for me this evening.

Therefore, as I’m sipping my decaf coffee looking out at the Puget Sound, my mood right now is relaxed, grateful, and excited!!!

I just love the pictures of brook from past fourth of Julys! She is just so adorable!
It helps me with my mental game to be mindful of my thoughts not only during but before/after a run. I try to challenge negative thoughts by thinking about how far I’ve come and to embrace the discomfort!
Throwing my dad a surprise 60th birthday tomorrow!
Three words- grateful, happy, energized!

My mood: Happy! I am at the beach and just saw the cutest 4th of July parade:)

Have a great day!

Why don’t they have deals like tgat bear me?!!? Ugh. I guess it’s for the best, though. That would be my Thursday lunch every Thursday..

Pasta and goat cheese!

Tomorrow, I’m racing my favorite 5k in the morning, vegging all day, and then cooking out and seeing fireworks with the hubs in the evening.
I tell folks who are considering long distance for the first time to be patient and tenacious. Keep fighting until you get what you want. If you didn’t get it, you didn’t want it bad enough yet. Try harder, but celebrate small victories.
Today, I’m feeling happy, relaxed, and exhausted. I need this long weekend.
The best food combo I’m enjoying recently is eggs and cheese… but there is also chocolate and peanut butter, brownies and ice cream, carrots and hummus… I could go on forever.
Have a great 4th!!

Are those tortilla chips Juanita’s? If so, they are the best!! When we moved from Oregon to the Midwest, we stocked up.

Great article – I just read it.

I wish my local fro-yo place had all you can fit into your cup for $3.99!! DARN!

Happy 4th of July!!

Staying put but running a 5k tomorrow (what better way to celebrate a holiday than waking up early to run?!) and tonight there is an Independence Day bash in my neighborhood with fireworks :)

I am feeling very grateful today, for the country I live in and love and for my day off work :)

Happy 4th!

That fro yo looks insane! I’m jealous!

Brooke’s 4th of July outfit last year was ridiculously cute!! Omg <3 <3 <3

Reply

I cannot wait to see Brooke in her outfit! I bet it will be adorable! And my all time favorite food combination is chocolate and peanut butter!!!

I build my running on the mental platform of belief in productive discomfort. Recognizing the fact that pushing yourself is necessary to improve and with this comes the productive discomfort vs injury worthy pushing resulting in pain.

I totally agree with you on the Juanitas chips and guacamole!! Another winning combo is pancakes with peanut butter and maple syrup!

Reply

Brokers looks like she has been out in the sun! She’s got a nice little tan going on. It’s adorable!

Three words for my mood: jubilant, caffeinated, & peaceful.

Happy holiday weekend to you and your family, sweet Janae! :)

#ifyouhaveitshareit, me and Deana K made that up together =). So thank you for sharing this -> How to Think Like an Elite Runner. I’m reading Mind Gym right now given to me by my coach. I will definitely give this a read after I am done. Have a good one!

Jam (or jelly in the US?) and cheese (cheddar) in a sandwich. Doesn’t sound good, but trust me, it works… Weekend plans consist of a 11 mile run tomorrow, and then spending the rest of the day in a bath full of ice… Enjoy your 4th July festivities.. :)

Great great words to live by, especially the part about mental toughness! Just in time for my 13 mile run tomorrow :)

Your nephew gets bigger and looks different in every post and it makes me sad.

I make a very similar stir fry and Ross hates that I like the peppers crunchy. He likes all veggies to be soft, which totally grosses me out. I have texture issues. Too bad I do all the cooking and I am such a stellar wife that I make it the way I like every time. Muahahaha.

I am mentally tough in some ways and such a doubter/downer in other ways. I definitely need to work on my mental game.

PB and chocolate. Obviously. Or avocado, eggs and pico.

I want to go on a hike early tomorrow morning. Come with me.

What fro-yo place is it? I’m in Orem and would love to know:)

This was the perfect article for me! I am racing the Sauvie Island Marathon tomorrow and will be going for a BQ (again!). I ran a marathon 9 weeks ago and it went alright, but didn’t get my goal. So, my friend/coach made some changes to my training and I am going for it again. The mental aspect is definitely what I worked on the most. Learning how to keep pushing when it gets hard and not giving up too soon. I am nervous for the heat tomorrow but I keep telling myself I am stronger than the heat! I can do this! I am prepared! I am going to read all the advice from the article and your readers! Have a great 4th!

I adore Jaunita’s chips!! I can only find them in one grocery store in our city, but it is worth the trip! We are spending the weekend in Solvang, CA with my whole family stuffed into a condo ;-) My two fav things together are hot semi-raw cookies with ice cream,

I already celebrated today.. so tomorrow I will just start packing up my apartment. (Moving from Chicago to Seattle.. pumped. Maybe. Overwhelmed–like nuts.)

I have to agree .. peanut butter+chocolate=best. Especially muddy buddies.. or puppy chow. Has Brooke had puppy chow? OH MAN. My sister and I used to steal the pot of puppy chow and eat it in the bathroom because it was the only room with a lock on it.. to keep out my big brother.

Second best combo: caramel popcorn and cheddar popcorn. Chicago Mix.. Chicago represent.

Third best combo… cookie dough and ice cream. Don’t judge.. best part of being single.

I’m celebrating in Venice Beach, CA. It is beautiful right now. Hey a few posts ago you posted about negative splits for your training. I’ve realized I’m doing that too but had no idea. Would you recommend it for half marathon training? I need to do some research on it.

Those are my favorite chips and guacamole too! YUM!
