Monday matters and a summer treat perfect for the 4th of July.

-I don’t know what we would do with ourselves during the hot summers if we didn’t have a pool in our community.  This thing saves our sanity.

-This morning was a hair horns producing/sweat in my eyeballs workout.  I did the same workout this morning as the one I did last Thursday but a smidge faster.  I ended with 11 miles (on the treadmill) at a 7:25 average pace.  My right hip is especially tight a few hours after finishing so I will be stretching and foam rolling like a champ today.

IMG 3502

-Today was my first day using the heart rate monitor and I’m pretty stoked about it.  I don’t think I have ever used my Garmin while running on the treadmill but I am now hooked.  Between checking out where my heart rate was for the different paces throughout the workout and staying on top of my cadence (the 620 tracks cadence outside and inside:)… using my garmin on the treadmill is going to be the new normal for me.

It will take some getting used to as far as actually wearing a heart rate monitor.  I’m sure my body will just get used to wearing it.  I did take it off (it goes around your chest) the second I finished because I was kind of over wearing it by then but I didn’t really notice it for the majority of the run.

IMG 3500

-I have two guy friends that bring us over an amazing meal once a month.  One of them loves to cook and I love to eat so it is kind of the best.  He made us the best ever teriyaki salmon and potatoes in the dutch oven.   I look forward to this meal every single month.  Next month I am going to make something… I don’t know how to compete with this stuff though.

-I just performed a taste analysis.  I am comparing the taste of a real swedish fish to the swedish fish gum.  The gum flavor isn’t as strong as the actually candy but man, it is dead on.

-Brooke experienced her first McDonald’s hotcakes on Saturday.  Those things remind me so much of being on road trips with my family as a kid.

-A reader sent me over a link to s’mores inside a waffle cone and I am thinking this will be PERFECT for the 4th of July.

-As runners we need to keep those glutes and legs strong—>  I found THIS AWESOME squat challenge in case you are looking for some help on how to get your glutes strong to help out your running!

-My nephew clearly thinks I am super cool.  Also, the day he is taller than me… I will probably cry.  Time is moving too quickly.

-Dirty feet, eating on the porch and a swimsuit all day long.  The definition of a toddler’s summer life.

I’ve been having issues with my hip flexors. No pain, but it gets really tight after my runs. The more I move it the better it feels and no pain while running. Its kind of annoying right now.

Love salmon! One of my favorite fish, that’s what we’re having for dinner tonight!

Treadmill run in about 20 minutes. 6 miles on tap today!

Reply

Enjoy your six miles and hopefully your hip flexors don’t feel crazy tight afterwards. We’ll be over for dinner tonight:)

Reply

My piriformis has been really tight lately. I’ve been doing extra stretching and foam rolling.

I’m doing spin class in about an hour so no running for me today!

Reply

BOOOO to your piriformis!! Have fun at your spin class and let me know if there are any songs that you loved during the class:)

Reply

Is there anything you’ve found that really works? I’ve been battling it for almost two years, mostly in hot, humid weather. Stretching brings some temporary relief.

Reply

My physio just told me I wasn’t activating my glute (on the bad piriformis side) try flexing that bad boy a few times / day and doing some leg lifts / keeping it in mind when you run and see!

Reply

Thank you! I will try that.

Reply

Hope it helps, I have had issues for 2 years and JUST figured that out (after cortizone shots etc) Good thing we have free health care in Canada.

Reply

I am feeling ok today but my hips always get tight after a hard run, so I make sure to spend alot of time with my foam roller afterwards.
Im not a big fan of seafood, but I do like salmon and I would probably say its my favorite fish.
I haven’t run on the treadmill since probably March…and hopefully it will be months before I step foot on one again!

Reply

Wow–McDonald’s hotcakes definitely take me back. :)

I am with you on the pool thing. If I didn’t live in an apartment and have instant access, I’m not sure how I would be surviving this summer.

I actually don’t like fish, so Swedish Fish would be my favorite kind. Or the graham cracker Gold Fish. Those are pretty tasty, too.

LOVE that last picture of Brooke! Why can’t summer days be like that for us all??

Reply

My lower left leg is angry again – really frustrating!

I love salmon and most fish – yummy!!

Today wasn’t the greatest day – so I’m looking forward to some ice cream and TV time tonight

Reply

Bummer about your day Rebecca. I hope the ice cream and tv time helps a ton!

Reply

I consider myself salmon’s number one fan– literally anything salmon related ends up in my mouth, particularly sushi!
Loved those smore’s related things though, gave me a major craving ;).

Reply

Monday matters – only 3 more days until a 3 day weekend.

I love fish in general but plank smoked salmon is the best.

Reply

I can’t eat seafood because I am super allergic! My moto is “If it comes from the sea, don’t feed it to me!”

Reply

I ran outside today and even though it was still dark out, it was beautiful. My left hamstring is sore now that I just came back from PT and failed a glute test (meaning my hamstring took over and decided to have a major cramp!). Guess I need to foam roll that a bit. But all in all it was good because it showed me I am still not using my glutes like I should be. I do love salmon and most all seafood–I don’t make it nearly enough.

Reply

I have glute probs too! what are you doing to get them activated? I’ve been doing flexing/bands and flexing/leg lifts.

Reply

The bottom of my feet have been tight lately. Thankfully, a good roll with a tennis ball or that yoga pose that stretches the bottoms of feet makes them feel all better.
I love salmon! Trout and cod are my other favorites.
My run was 8 miles with 5 x 1000 m on the treadmill. I totally experienced sweat in my eyeballs also.

Reply

Monday Matters: I’m home from running the North Fork 50 in Denver.
Amazingly I’m not really sore. I did an easy recovery run this afternoon. Nothing hurts but my legs are heavy and slow.
I did my run on the treadmill so I could easily quit if anything started hurting.

Reply

I did a tread class and a spin class today. My legs are a bit tired, especially my quads and right hip. Definitely foam rolling tonight.
Guys arriving with good food – excellent! Salmon is one of my favorites – really any fish that is fresh works for me. I went to Portugal last year and the seafood there was unbelievable, and possibly spoiled me for life! Its not quite the same as Chicago……

Thank you for the links to your favorite dresses. I ordered the baseball sleeve dress after you originally shared the link – already had the chance to wear it. It is so comfortable. I could see wearing it into the fall with some boots.

Reply

OH YAY!!!! I am so happy you love the dress… it is my favorite. So beyond comfortable. Killer job on your workout today! Hmmmm I want to go to Portugal, that is awesome!

Reply

I love salmon!! And I will be hitting up the treadmill tonight because it’s going to be over 100 degree today and all week here.

Reply

So glad you got to try the gum!

Quick question about your HR monitor… So I’ve used it in three places – RIGHT under the sports bra support strap (so covered), halfway under/halfway out, and then completely below the sports bra closer to my stomach than chest. I’ve found that the halfway point gets me the most accurate readings (or so I think). Where do you place it?

Side note: that’s one of the most awkward running gadgets to put on, let me tell you what.

Reply

Thanks for the squat challenge! I somehow managed to injure my foot. I’m proud of myself for immediately seeing a sports doc when I knew something was “off”. No stress fracture but no running for 3-4 weeks so I’m going to focus on bike time, this squats challenge and an abs challenge. Having a the challenges will be a nice goal while taking some healing time off!

Reply

I always have salmon on my bday. It is my favorite.

No running. Obviously. Ross ran on the treadmill during his lunch break while I put the laundry away and that is pretty much the same thing. Orrrrr the farthest thing from running there is.

Brooke’s curled piggies are do dang cute.

I don’t think I will be able to stop thinking about those smore waffle cones until I have one. I better get on that quick!

Reply

Monday Matters: Currently working my way through a pack of Sweet Watermelon gum (I eat gum like candy, it’s an issue) and making my blue nail polish and pink nail polish audition for a spot on my nails this week. BIG things happening over here, I know.

Have a wonderful night!!!!!!!!!!

Reply

Two guy friends that cook? Send them my way! I love to cook, but it would be really nice if someone did it for me every now and then!

Reply

I have nothing sore from running right now because I have not run since the Seattle RnR. BUT…I am very excited to get out and run today!! Even though it will be about ~90!! UGH! I am excited, though because I am going to make myself follow a half-marathon training program this summer in preparation for my Labor Day Half-Marathon. Today, is -only- 3 miles. Even at 90 degrees, 3 miles will be good. Then home for some yoga!

So….I guess this would all qualify for my “Monday Matters”! :)

Reply

I HATE Mondays – just means it is the start of the week and I need to get through 5 full days of work – boooo :(

My legs are sore – both from running and my barre classes – they burn so good!

Wild Salmon is my FAVORITE – I actually cooked some last night. It was so pricey but definitely worth it!

Reply

Brooke’s curls in the pancake picture. Too cute! And now I need that swedish fish gum in my life!!

Reply

I have always struggled wearing the heart rate monitor because it would be too tight or fall down when I got sweaty! I have since safety pinned it to my sports bra (on the sides, almost under your armpit) which allows you to keep it looser. It’s the best! I love my Garmin 620. Prefect for a data nerd!

Reply

I used to eat salmon, pasta, and veggies every day. It was serious.

Reply

I used to have a lot of problems with my psoas muscle after running. Since then, I’ve been super diligent about stretching the front of my hips and quads. It’s only after a huge problem that you become super aware of all the aches and pains!

Reply

I have had those smores in a cone camping before and they are DELISH! My family likes to mix it up and add pb cups or peppermint patties inside for even more flavor!

Reply

I used a hrm to train part of last summer just to get an idea of paces for workouts and ultimately I did tire of wearing it since I feel like enough is enough with gear! Nothing really bothering me right now but of course that might change with marathon training. Hoping not.

Reply

Today I’m doing a run outside after work. I’m really excited to try out my brand new Jaybird Bluebuds tonight for the first time! I promised myself that once I was able to run after my injury, that I would treat myself to a pair in celebration of my return to running!

Reply

My calf muscles have been a real concern, especially after tearing one of them last year. It’s not fun being injured… I’m doing loads of foam rolling and stretching at the minute though… And teriyaki has to be the best sauce in the world. Ever.

Reply

I usually don’t run on Mondays, it’s my lifting day. But I was about 15-30 minutes late to my class this morning so I might do the treadmill tonight. It’s just…so boring.

Reply

I did the treadmill yesterday because I wanted to, not even because it was raining outside! I don’t hate it at all like I used to which makes me really happy.

Reply

That challenge looks awesome!!!! I’m going to do it in July!!!

Reply

No run for me today. just a much needed rest day :) ahh
and yup looks like a toddler’s summer. My little one is obsessed with going to the creek. She asks us to go outside all the time. lol. Unfortunately I miss it cuz of work though : /

ice cream yummm

My piriformis has been pretty right the last few weeks. Any exercises you reccomend to help this out besides squats?

Def a huge salmon fan! Except! My boyfriend caught some in the lake the other day and I couldn’t eat them, they completely grossed me out!

Reply

Favorite salmon.. lox–if you like it, the pastrami-style lox at TJ’s is great.

No workout again for me. Recovering from oral surgery.. eating ice cream, mash potatoes, jello, and eggs. ..

Reply

Love salmon! Probably one of my favorite fish to eat. I ran 3 miles on the treadmill today – been trying to get stronger & I have bursitis in my right hip so there’s that…

Reply

My niece is 15 and about 2 inches taller than me!
I love salmon. Had it last night. Grilled on the barbecue with oregano, garlic and lime juice.
My lower back and piriformis are tight. Stretching and rolling here too!

Reply

My hip flexors and shoulders have been awfully tight. I am hoping that some yoga will stretch me out. I have tried to like salmon but every time I try it I despise it…tuna filets are my go to!

Reply

Those hotcakes from McDonald’s are what road trips were for me as well! Every time we went out for a long drive and started in the early morning, I was excited to get my pancakes!

Reply

my glutes are super sore, mostly from doing weighted squats the other day, but going on a long brisk walk definitely added to it! foam rolling is on the agenda tonight :)

I’m pretty sure I did that exact squat challenge! I prefer weighted squats more now BUT(T) haha.. it definitely left me sore and stronger. have fun with it!

Reply

Favourite dish is always something cheesy, pasta or pizza. You know, the really healthy stuff ;-)

Is Brooke potty trained?

Reply

Right now, I’m having big problems with my right piriformis muscle, it is so tight and sore. I’ve foam rolled and stretched it to death and now I’m having some ‘needling’ done.

I love salmon!

Reply

Qualtrics!! My hubs has that same (and one million other) shirt as your nephew!

Reply

I’m in the process of foam rolling my it band and used a tennis ball on my glutes while I catch up on blogs. Pretty talented huh!?

I’m starting to like fish more and more. I am not a fan of salmon, but halibut tastes good. Answer me this: is it weird that the hubby LOVES sushi but not fish – like at all!?

Reply

It’s finally hit the part of the summer where it’s just too hot to run outside. I was up at 5:30am the other day and it was already almost 90 degrees — I could possibly push myself through it, but I won’t put an infant and a toddler in a stroller and risk them getting overheated (the hubby is already at work that early).
I need to move my treadmill from the garage to the house, so I’m planning to start clocking miles on the treadmill this week! Hopefully by October it’ll be cool enough to run outside again, because I really miss it. Arizona residents are serious hermits in the summer, and it can make you pretty stir crazy!

Reply

Brooke’s piggy tails are too cute! Those smore cones look so yummy.

Reply

-Monday matters: being home after working all weekend :)
-My Right knee was giving me some nagging pains after my long run Sunday, but seemed fine for my run this morning.
-I like white fish, I’ve never tried salmon.
-I ran on the road today. Friday I have an easy 3 mile run that will be held on the treadmill. :)

Reply

Wait. Do I have to be a toddler to live in my swim suit, have dirty feet, and eat outside? I thought that was everyone’s summer.

Reply

i make this to die for thai salmon.. i was going to make it for the mister before he left but i never got around to it. looks like i need to make it for myself ;)

brooke’s curly hair is so adorable, it makes me smile!

Reply

My feet are always sore! Can never seem to rest long enough to have them 100% better.

Reply

yes i did run on the treadmill this morning… 7.4 easy miles with fast finish! got to watch the first episode of Orange is the New Black while running. And yep i also wear my heart rate monitor and garmin while running on the treadmill – it’s nice to have those data to comb through afterwards, and also great for making sure i keep my heart rate in the easy zone :)

Reply

I am going to live more and work less by leaving my phone on its charger and not checking my email all weekend!! Also, I followed vacayglasses on Instagram :) the matte plum are gorgeous on you!!!

Reply

Working away on my PT exercises – that is my running life right now, but so necessary!
LOVE salmon.
Brooke’s summer life is what ours looks like! Dirty little feet, eating outside and tons of pool/beach time. The best!

Reply

Mmm, I loved McD’s hotcakes and hash browns growing up too!

Reply

Brooke and those curly pony tails?! Adorable.
