A weird running story and strawberries and cream.

Did I ever tell you the story about how my sister and I shared a pair of headphones while running?  I was visiting her when she lived in New Mexico and we only had one pair of headphones and one iPod (this was like ten years ago so the iPod was the huge one that weighed like 3 lbs) and we both really wanted to listen to it.  We had to run really close to one another the entire 7 miles but we made it work.  Every car that drove by us thought we were crazy.

We are a strange duo.

We reenacted our headphone sharing yesterday afternoon and listened to ‘Getting Jiggy Wit It’ just like we did on our run.

My nephew saw my Boston jacket and tried to leave with it;)  Turns out the colors are ‘in’ right now in the cool kids scene.

Strawberry Days was a winner.  Nothing like a carnival to make summer feel real.  PS my dress if from here and it is crazy comfortable.

Her best friends came along with us.

Brooke takes her roller coasters incredibly seriously.

The most important part about going to Strawberry Days is getting the strawberries and creme for $1.50.  Heaven.

Brooke’s first experience with it and she loved it.

For dinner—> a turkey burger, avocado and bbq sauce half sandwich because it was the last piece of bread,1/2 a watermelon (I can’t stop eating that stuff) and a yogurt.

And a documentary about tiny houses on Netflix.  I thought this was SOOOO good.  If you like documentaries, check this one out.

Today is a rest day from running for me.  Instead I will be yogaing it up and getting ready for 10 miles on Saturday.  Enjoy your Friday and the start of your weekend!

I love the documentary Rich Hill, it’s amazing. I still follow the three kids stories.

Wild plans, the neverending home improvement project!

Watermelon rocks my world!

Reply

I know I should do yoga, but I never do. The whole sit still/zen thing intimidates me.
Fave fruit right now: peaches!
I’m having dinner with my husband tonight! Tomorrow is my last “long” run before race day.

Reply

I love doing yoga, I just don’t make enough time for it! Yoga and strength training are what I want to focus on while I’m resting after the marathon!

Berries, any kind, all kinds. Love them!

I really liked Fire on the Track (Steve Prefontaine story). It was really good, but I also love Pre!

I’ll probably break into my sweat pants at about 5pm, pop some popcorn and watch a movie tonight. It’ll be crazy at my house! :)

Reply

I try to practice yoga 5 days per week with one longer practice on a no-run day. I absolutely love it and it’s a great complement to running! I do a mix of vinyasa and specific “yoga for runners” poses. Don’t know how I lived without it now.

Reply

I used to be very much into yoga (like three times a week)… then I learned through recent physical therapy that it could have been a factor in my hip issues (bending my spine incorrectly/nerve stuff). Who knew!? So I’m taking a break from it for a bit. Namaste ;)

Reply

MK–my PT team has me off yoga too! Too much hamstring stretching in vinyasa. At first I didn’t believe them, but not doing it has made a huge difference. I have hip/high hamstring issues and much of it stems from my lower back. Sounds like both our PTs are figuring it all out for us!! Take care. Namaste.

Reply

I was hesitant too, but it’s crazy the difference it’s made!

Reply

My physio has just said this to me in the past week as well! Apparently anything that twists or bends the spine incorrectly is bad. I told him how I like to stretch my hammies by touching my toes and he said I should only do that if I can keep my back straight…I definitely can’t!

Reply

It’s amazing how everything is connected! Your spine can affect your TOE. Oh, our bodies…

Reply

I am not big into the yoga scene, but I really try to stretch at least twice a week. When I’ve done yoga in the past, I’ve been into vinyasa. I like the slow, fluid movement of the practice. McConkey is an amazing documentary about freestyle skiing. I absolutely love it. No wild plans for tonight. Potentially seeing Inside Out. I love any and all Pixar movies : )

Reply

My cousin is in that documentary! She lives in a tiny house with her guy, baby, and great dane! And now they are expecting baby number 2 – it’s really cool: she blogs too! minimotives.com

Reply

AHHHH that is the coolest thing ever! Thanks for sharing Sage… off to check out her blog!

Reply

Haha. 7 miles close to someone. Lol. I don’t thimble I could do it. Why did you guys need music though. ? Should have just talked to each other. Lol. Silly

I am loving grapes right now. Yumm so perfectly in season.
LooKS like you guys had a good time :) Brooke is more brave than me when it comes to rollar coasters. Lol

Reply

Awesome!! Question – how many miles are you running a week during this training cycle?

Reply

I have been doing some yoga poses lately in my house just to stretch my lower back and hamstrings. It’s helping.
I’m going to visit A friend today because her mom is very sick and I might not get the chance to see her again. It’s so sad. :(
Loving sweet cherries lately!

Reply

I love hot yoga the best, but I don’t do it very often because classes are pricey. I like to do the p90x yoga at home.

Currently my favorite fruit is pineapple.

Tonight we are getting a Costco take n bake pizza and watching a movie!

Happy Friday!

Reply

That is so funny about the sharing the headphones. Rick and I used to do that watching the iPAD on the plane until we got the dual headphone adapter.

Yes, I do yoga. Not as much as before as my PT team has suggested it’s not always the best for the issues I deal with (doing it less has made me feel better which makes me both happy and sad). I like Yin Yoga!

I love Documentaries. Tiny is such a good one (and takes place in my state!)

I am super into watermelon right now. And pears. When we order our farm peaches I will eat those (multiple times) daily!!

Reply

Fave documentary = Desert Runners!

Can’t get enough fresh berries right now. I could eat them all day!

Have a GREAT weekend!

Reply

I totally agree, Desert Runners is awesome!

Reply

I’m always into watermelon, however, it tastes extra delicious this time of year!

I’ve never tried strawberries and crème…and now I want to! Is the cream sweet?

Reply

I practice yoga once a week but try and incorporate stretching and meditation every day. Favorite fruit at the moment is strawberries.

Reply

Yoga is a little too slow for me. I tend to have my mind wander too much and then the relaxing doesn’t happen because I’m thinking about all the other stressful things I need to do when I’m done.
No crazy plans but possibly going out for dinner.

Reply

What kind of turkey burgers do you use?? They always looks so good!

Reply

Favorite Documentary: Desert Runners!! **I tried to talk my family into watching it for family movie night last Friday night. I was out voted. :( **
Favorite fruit(s): watermelon and berries
I need to get back into yoga.
Friday plans-I think our usual family dinner/movie/popcorn extravaganza! LOL we are a crazy bunch here!
Have a wonderful weekend!!

Reply

I incorporate several yoga and Pilates movements into my strength training. It’s made a huge difference in my balance and flexibility.

Reply

I like yoga for a good stretch, but I much prefer Pilates. It gives a good stretch to everything and makes me feel realigned, but it also works my core so well!
I’m obsessed with peaches and cherries right now. Summer fruits are my absolute favorite.
No wild plans tonight; probably just renting a movie and getting good rest for Saturday’s long run.
Hope you have a great Friday!

Reply

I am with you on the watermelon. Just packed up the baby to go to the grocery store t buy some for breakfast.
Should have been more efficient and done some grocery shopping, but yep, left there with just a watermelon.

Reply

I need to start doing more yoga. I enjoy it but haven’t found any classes lately that work with my schedule.

Those strawberries look delicious! I love fruit, and I could eat grapes and bananas all day long. And pineapple, though I don’t eat too much because of all of the acidity.

No big Friday night plans for me–just resting and relaxing!

Reply

I LOVE strawberries, my favorite fruit and ice cream! My friday evening plans include a break from studying for the bar exam to have a cone of strawberry deliciousness actually :)

Reply

The tiny houses documentary is great. We recently watched Craiglist Joe, which was really interesting! He basically sees if he can survive off humanity and the folks posting on craigslist for a month. Pretty impressive!

Reply

I absolutely loved Tiny! I don’t think that I could ever live in a tiny house but I really appreciate the way they use space and waste as little as possible. Not to mention the idea of no mortgage payment is pretty awesome!

Reply

Your dress is so cute, thanks for that link.

Tonight is a girls night for us cause daddy is going camping. We are going to do our best to find the funnest things.

Reply

Yoga has been a lifesaver with my running! I get way too tight.
Cherries!!! Love em!

Reply

Yogaing up is an awesome term. Nice work, J! :)

Reply

I am loving strawberries and watermelon right now! Just slice it in half and give me a spoon! I love putting my hands up on roller coasters but I barely do it because I end up smacking myself in the face. Haha!

Reply

I’m glad you asked about yoga because I was going to ask you about it after seeing your training schedule… any one can chime in on this question– i’m running 5 days a week (about 35 miles) and trying to fit in cross-training 2 of those days + (maybe) a day of yoga + a day of rest (of course!). Is it beneficial to just do yoga one day a week? I would think so… just curious to hear others thoughts about just doing it once a week. I would do it more if I had more time in my days but I’d rather spend more time running. Thoughts appreciated! :)

Reply

strawberries and cream…yummie!!
I power vinyasa and core flow.

Reply

Yum – I’m so into strawberries right now! Last summer it was mangoes and I recently went through a pear phase but for now I just can’t get enough of strawberries…so delicious with just about anything!

As much as I love a good running documentary, I think the best documentary I’ve ever seen is still God Grew Tired of Us. It tells the story of the Lost Boys of Sudan and is so touching and inspirational and even humorous in some parts. Seriously a must-see if you have never watched it! I recently saw Fed Up and that made me think a ton about my nutrition, too…I’ve been trying to cut down on my sugar consumption a bit since seeing that one (though I just can’t give up the whipped cream to go with those strawberries ;) ).

Reply

I love yoga! Pittsburgh has free outdoor yoga all summer long in about 10 locations, so I try to go as much as possible in the summer. It’s so fun. Love the picture of Brooke on the roller coaster..She looks so serious! Have a great weekend and good luck on your 10 miler!

Reply

I used to run with a Discman… it was a portable CD player but it skipped every time it got bumped so the only way it wouldn’t skip is if I ran while I carried it like a waitress carries a serving tray. I looked like SUCH A LOSER.

Reply

Favorite fruit right now –>> grilled pineapple!
Friday night plans –>> girls night with my best friend. Dinner and a trip to the bookstore! We’re real exciting!

Reply

i am incredibly impressed that you and your sister shared headphones for 7 MILES!

my husband and i were just on a plane back from australia (!) and he has these awesome noise canceling earbuds so we tried to share. even while sitting still and next to each other, we kept ripping them out of each other’s ears. i am super impressed by the two of you!

now i must go find strawberries ASAP!

Reply

Love yoga, wish I did it more. The High Cost of Low Prices is a memorable documentary. I want to watch the Hood to Coast documentary.

Reply

I love doing yoga. I try and do it every Friday after work. My favorite is Ashtanga but that is a very intense commitment so I’ve only been doing vinyasa. Vinyasa varies so much depending on the instructor but it’s great for yoga.

Here is a really great yoga “quiz” to see what type of yoga is what you’re looking for:

Reply

Ashtanga yoga is definitely my favorite!

Reply

My favorite fruit right now is blueberries. Someone at work has some blueberry bushes and brought in a huge bag for me! I was so excited. Sounds kinda weird but I like heating them up and pouring them over cottage cheese. Super good and fits in some protein.

Reply

Gimme all the strawberries! They’re so sweet and yummy right now. I’m also LOVING pineapples and mangos.

I adore that photo of Brooke being all serious with her hands up in the air in the rollercoaster. So darn cute!

Reply

That looks like so much fun!!! I love festivals like that! I went to a strawberry festival last year and it was the best!

Reply

I don’t do yoga, I’ve just never been able to get into it and relax and sit still! Plus, I’m totally not flexible and a yoga teacher made fun of that in my first class and I think I’m still traumatized. :P
My favourite documentary is “Fed Up” about the sugar crisis in public health.. SO GOOD.
Raspberries, always raspberries.
SUSHI NIGHT TONIGHT!!!!!!!!

Reply

I like the documentary about the guy who wire walked between the twin towers back in the 70’s I believe. (There is a movie about this coming out later this year) I also watched the doc about running thru the 4 desert ultras.

I love pineapple and strawberry. But I always love them.

Reply

I watched a documentary on a spelling bee a while back, Spellbound and it was great!
I haven’t really met a fruit that I don’t like, but strawberries from our local stand are kind of a big deal right now.
We are taking the kids to a water park today!

Reply

do popsicles count as my favorite fruit right now?

Reply

yes. yes, they do. I really like you.

Reply

I was in a good yoga groove for awhile of going once a week on Sunday evenings, but fell out of that lately. I really need to pick it up again though!

Reply

Running the Sahara!!! A must for those who like running. March of the Penguins and Winged Migration (if you like animal documentaries). Another eye opener is Bully. I also enjoyed Grizzly Man.

Favorite fruit right now = grapes and bananas.

I don’t have any plans for the evening. My husband is out of town on a fishing trip, so I’m trying to decide whether to rent a couple movies and veg, or get together with friends. Sometimes it’s nice to not have a plan. :)

Reply

Favorite fruit right now is watermelon and fresh berries! One of my favorite documentaries is the business of being born. So good! When I was training for my marathon, I used to look up YouTube videos to watch for stretching after long runs. I’d type in ‘Yoga for Runners’ and could find some awesome videos! It was enough to take time away from the little one to run double digit miles. I couldn’t really fit a yoga class into my schedule too often.

Reply

Right now I have to do whatever yoga I find on On Demand, but when I was in college in Seattle I went to a real yoga studio to do vinyasa, and that atmosphere can’t be beat. SO relaxing.

I recently watched the documentary “Happy People,” about the people of Siberia. It was really good, and super interesting to see how these people lived and worked. But I’m dying to see the new one that’s in theatres, “The Wolfpack!”

Raspberries, now and always.

I can’t wait to sleep tonight, after a double header softball game and getting home at 11:30 last night. I gotta recuperate before my 9 mile group run tomorrow morning.

Reply

I love mixing in one day of yoga a week with running. For people who have never done it/feel intimidated, I really encourage you to try different classes and teachers, there are so many different styles and they aren’t all about bending your foot behind your ear.

I bought a watermelon this week that was super mushy (boo) and thought it was destined for the compost. But my husband recommended putting it in smoothies and HOLY COW was that good!!

Reply

I don’t do yoga because my arm weird and won’t bear weight. My favorite documentaries are Place at the Table, SOMM, Living on One Dollar and Craig’s List Joe.

Reply

I yoga every Monday at lunchtime, and I love it. It helps my posture, since I sit at a computer all day, and it helps keep my running muscles loose. In the summer, I LOVE to mix cut-up strawberries, nectarines and banana. I also LOVE documentaries, but don’t think I have a favorite one.

Reply

nectarines are definitely my favorite fruit right now. I eat 3+ a day this time of year. My wild and crazy Friday night plans consist of going to Target and then going to bed early because my 8 mile run tomorrow will have to be at 6a.m. so that I can go to a pool party :)

Reply

I love that documentary! It was so good!

Did Strawberry Days have any strawberry pizza? If you’ve never had it, do yourself a favor and find some ASAP!

Reply

used to do yoga 7 days a week but due to the meditation side of it, I have switched to Pilates instead ! Am loving it ~

Reply

I love you yoga so much. Its such a good reset for my day and I always leave feeling so much calmer and energized at the same time. I don’t go often enough tho!

Reply

Sharing headphones while running is seriously talented! I’ve shared mine on the plane but that’s it. Brooke’s overalls are too cute! I’m babysitting my godson and his sister tonight, hoping to come up with some fun for them so their parents can have a date night.

Reply

Can you tell me where you got Brooke’s blue sandals? Thanks!
I think you might this documentary called A Man Named Pearl. It’s about a guy whose neighbors didn’t want him to move into their nice neighborhood because he “wouldn’t be able to keep up his house” (racist stereotype). He sort of blew them out of the water on that one!

Reply

HEY!! They are from Target! Thank you so much for sharing your recommendation. I am totally going to watch it!

Reply

If you don’t mind a good cry, the documentary Dear Zachary is really good. It’s on Netflix. For running related, I really liked Desert Runners.

Reply

Oh my, Brooke is so cute!!!! I try to practice yoga at least once per week. I love Yin and Vinyasa yoga.
10 miles tomorrow AM for me too, so Friday night will bring an easy dinner and playing with the family :)

Reply

I was doing yoga once a week during the winter but I fell off the bandwagon as soon as the nice weather hit!

Tonight, I am getting in a tempo workout because I am skipping a race tomorrow to go to the beach. #lifegoals.

Reply

mmm now I want strawberries and turkey burgers. I smell a trip to the store once I get off work.

Also I love that documentary! It makes me want a tiny house.

Reply

I was also amazed by that documentary about tiny houses. The world is a wonderful place full of everything you can imagine! Today is an off day for me, too. Maybe I should think about filling it with yoga! Or home renovation projects… :)

Reply

I just told my sister about that documentary. She’s been obsessed with tiny houses lately and keeps sending me all sorts of links about them haha

Reply

I don’t do yoga but I really want to start! I’ve always hated it because I just don’t have the patience, but I know my running would benefit from a little extra strength/flexibility.

Looks like you had a great time with Brooke – the strawberries look delicious!!

Reply

I’m leaving in 5 minutes to get in some yogaing!

My crazy Friday night may just consist of watching that tiny houses documentary. Sounds so random.

Reply

Love yoga – Vinyasa flow is so great and you move more!
You’ll have to check out the documentary trailer on my blog today – it is a family friend who has autism and is an incredible surfer! The film come out June 30th – I am so excited!!
The tiny houses documentary looks so cool!!
Friday plans are a dinner and movie with my husband.
I can’t stop eating watermelon!!! :)
I ordered one of your shirts yesterday and can’t wait to to get it!!

Reply

-My absolute favorite yoga is to do the Jillian Michaels’ Yoga Meltdown video at home – it never gets old to me!
-Favorite fruit right now is easily strawberries.
-My Friday night plans include a date with a pint of ice cream, my husband, and something on tv – possibly that documentary!

Reply

Blueberries. I’m loving them

Reply

Do you have any good yoga suggestions for online videos?

Reply

I try to do yoga once a week to compliment my running.

Reply

Your relationship with your sister is so sweet! I have two brothers but asked my parents repeatedly to give me a sister so I could have a best friend like that :) They never gave in! Punks…

I did yoga while I was pregnant and now I’m mainly just stretching. I’m trying out my first postpartum run (likely run-walk) tomorrow! My plans for Friday… going to bed at 9 pm because our newborn and toddler are sleeping. Figured I should try to rest before our littlest one is up to nurse again! Pretty exciting Friday night.

Reply

Town Of Runners is a great documentary, available on the UK Netflix, I’m not sure about the US version. Definitely worth checking out… :)

Reply

I need to incorporate yoga. After our move, I will try to find a place that is affordable. Living in DC everything feels so expensive. Also, I’ll be doing the “single mom” thing (dad is in military) with two kids under two and am sure yoga will need to be added for my sanity.

Reply

Today is a rest day for me too but sadly I may not be able to do my long run tomorrow on account of having come down with a cold :(

Reply

That strawberries and cream looks so yummy!

Reply

I have never been to Strawberry days and am sad that I missed the strawberries and cream this year!

Have you seen Desert Runners? It’s a documentary on netflix and it’s pretty good! and I have seen the tiny houses documentary on netflix, it’s crazy! I don’t think I could live like that.

Reply

I love documentaries, thanks for the recommendation!

Oh my word your daughter is adorable! Such a cute little outfit :)
